I'm a big Phantom fan and haven't been as committed as I should have with my piano playing before I bought the book. Afterward, I have improved my sight reading and have bought other books to challenge myself. I have found that if I really want to learn a piece I will rise to the occassion even if the music is slightly more difficult than what I am accustomed to. I truly recommend this book to anyone!!

I teach piano, and I have a student who is obsessed with Phantom, so I purchased this for her, and I can't get her to stop practicing she loves it so much. The arrangements are challeging and have pushed her sightreading, but I still think it was a great choice. I enjoyed the pictures as well.

This is not the "simple" version, though with practice, it's not too difficult. I would not recommend this book for a beginner; but for an occasional player, the music is easy enough to call up on occasion. The songs don't have that 'empty' sound like many songs transposed from orchestra to piano and, in my opinion, you could play them for an audience and receive applause.

I hate The Phantom of the Opera and Andrew Lloyd Webber's music in general, but my voice students love it, especially "Think of Me." Unlike some editions I've seen, this edition has the cadenza from the recording. It's also beautifully bound and presented. If I have to have Lloyd Webber music in my library, at least it's a good edition.

I love the story. It is very interesting. Other people might love the story as well; It has a different version on what is the actual opera show has; and that makes the story more successful. I love the whole side of the story.... the characters, the set-ups, the pacing and the musics. Being a phantom opera fan, I am not disappointed. Well, infact the directors and the whole cast was very amazing. The story captures the all the things you cannot imagine on the phantom of the opera alone. I will always love the movie....

I cannot say enough about this book. If you loved the movie version of POTO than this is a MUST for you. IT goes into the history of the story and right up to the movie made in 2004. I've turned mine into a scrapbook. I've printed out pictures from the movie off the internet and have included them in many of the pages here. If you especially liked Gerard Butler as the Phantom...buy it!! You will not be sorry.

Being a die-hard phan (as most of you reading this probably are as well), I devour nearly anything related to our man in the mask. After seeing (and totally loving!) the 2004 movie with Gerard Butler, I bought this companion book as soon as possible. It contains very interesting background information from the Phantom's beginnings in the G. Leroux novel, continuing through almost every incarnation of him up to and including the 2004 movie. It was nice to read so much background detail. The last part of this book contains the screenplay. Before ordering this book, I had thought this section would read as more of a "novel" of the movie rather than a movie script itself, so I was a bit disappointed by that. The text is a little choppy at times, but it is interesting nonetheless and provides certain insights you cannot know simply from watching the movie. I would say this book is more of the fluffy, "coffee-table" material for casual reading. Very pretty throughout - nice pictures - an overall good addition to any phan's collection.

This book is a must-have for any Phantom of the Opera fan. The Complete Phantom of the Opera by George Perry is more detailed on the story behind the musical, but as an updated version that includes info and pictures from the movie, this book is essential to any true "Phan".

Not that I know how to play the music well but I wanted to have the music for reading along with poetry book. Would be nice if they had the music book as a ring so can open to a piece and not ruin the book. I just wanted a keepsake because may not have a chance to see it again, on stage. A black cover and the yellow eyes which show figures of cats posing a figure.

Okay, so I wasn't a big CATS fan. I have never seen the show, but have heard the music from CDs. I must say the music is highly addictive. And it's Andrew Lloyd Webber, so how could you go wrong? This book would be the best book for piano because it contains basically every song. But, I have to warn beginners, it can be extremly hard. Most of the songs jump around between sharps and flats, and when they do it's usually four or five at a time! It will take alot of practice to get it down. All the songs are fun to play. It's one of those books where you start at the beginning, and play every song without skipping any. Overall a great buy.

Wow! I was amazed how great and useful this book was. It includes 19 songs of Cats Classics. Most every song is written just like Andrew Lloyd Webber did himself. It also includes pictures from various Cats casts through out the years. If you are a theater buff, and enjoy being up on stage, then this is a great audition book. With songs like Memory, Skimbleshanks, Gus:The Theatre Cat, Mr. Mistoffeles, and many others. It will leave you at the piano for hours playing away. When of the best things about this is that it is the COMPLETE book of songs from the musical. I highly recommend this, and I hope you will enjoys this as much as I did.

Many people have complained that this book is not the complete score. It is not the complete score of the version that is now licensed. If you are absolutely in love with the newer versions of the show, Pharaoh's Story can be reworked to be the Prologue and Any Dream Will Do can be copied and pasted to the beginning, and little alterations will be needed here and there. There are some different lyrics, some different musical passages, and some of the songs are in different keys. A girl trying to sing the Narrator part as this book has it written may have a lot of trouble as the Narrator was sung by a man on that 1973 album. Personally, I think this book is fantastic, and especially at such a low price compared to most vocal scores. It's a real bargain. My advice would be to get this book and the matching recording - both are great.

This is a great score. All the songs are included (with the exception of the Prologue, but as other reviewers have stated, this is the same music as "Pharoah's Story", which is included in the book). The different voice parts are included, and all of the harmonies.
Surprisingly, the book itself is much smaller than I had expected. It is not the size of a normal piano book, and the music itself is smaller than I would have liked. Nevertheless, it is definitely worth buying.

This book is a great book to buy, whether for your own personal collection or for auditions...I bought it for an audition and it worked wonderfully!
To those who say that this book is not complete, I humbly suggest they change the words to "Pharoh's Story" to creat the "Prologue" and also, not all versions of the show featured the "Any Dream Will Do" at the beginning. Some shows only did it at the end...but it's still the same song (minus the narrator's part)

This book... I have no words on how amazing it is.
When I rekindled my love for musicals, and of course, Phantom of the Opera made that happened... I had to get everything and learn everything about Phantom. So I found this book at the library and I went insane over it.
Firstly, it gives a clear background history on Gaston Leroux--the writer and the creator of Phantom of the Opera. Then, it goes into another section when talking about the films it inspired. You'll be surprised and amazed when you see it and read about it. Not only that, it tells you some small tidbit facts on the actors and actresses of these movies.
And then, my favorite part, it goes into the Lloyd Webber musical. And when I say "goes into" I mean it!! There are so many pictures of the Original London Cast it's phenominal! There ares ome behind the scenes pictures as well. I never seen so many pictures about Phantom sure in a book, ever.
And when you think that's enough, there is a libretto of the stage production--including scrafito'ed pictures of the OLC copied in there as it was when the CD/Cassette first made it's debut.
All in all, it's not clearly updated as it is now, there is mention of the movie and who they want in it. But otherwise, if you are a London Cast or simply a Phantom obsessionist, you MUST have this book. If you find it at a house sale, a junk pile, book sale... whatever... BUY IT. You will not be dissapointed!!

I recently purchased both 'The Complete Phantom of the Opera'and the novel, and I am soo impressed! After I saw the movie and bought the soundtrack, I knew that I had to have these books. My interst in the Phantom of the Opera was first sparked when I saw the silent version with Lon Cheney. Then I heard about the movie coming out, so I saw it and I was more than impressed. I still have yet to see the Broadway version however. So, I highly recommend the movie, the soundtrack and the books. In my opinion each is well worth the cost!!

Didn't say Easy Piano..........2007-08-28
I ordered this book off of amazon since I've been wanting it for awhile and it was a lot cheaper than it is other places. I was very excited when it arrived only to be disappointed that it was the easy piano version. I skimmed over the pages and noticed that all the songs (from what I saw) were in the key of C major. While this is a very good book for beginners, I wanted the more advanced book. I may have missed it, but I usually check each item on the site very carefully before ordering, so I'm not sure how this happened. Just a warning for anyone who is not aware of this.

Though this book might be great for a beginner, it is definitely not what I was expecting. Amazon might want to consider making this description and title a bit clearer to avoid future confusion.

I was disappointed in the fact that music to all the songs were not included in the book. The nine songs that are in are good but to leave out the songs with Judas and the High Priests and Jesus and Pilate and Simon Zealots is not right.

Although this score does not include all the intermittent recitatives and orchestral arrangemtnts, it does offer a good piano transcription of the major songs with words. For anyone wnating to use any of the songs of JCS, this publication is very good.

The songs included in this book are Heaven on Their Minds, Everything's Alright, Hosanna, Pilate's Dream, Last Supper, Gethsemane, King Herod's Song, and Superstar. A few things should be noted: Firstly, Heaven on their Minds does not include the "all gone sour" last four verses that are used in live productions of jcs. Instead the song is written to fade away. That might present a problem to people performing or using that song for an audition. The last supper only includes the chorus that the apostles sing. Superstar is tuned to a C instead of the original E that is on all of the recordings and live productions. Other than that, all the other keys are the same as you might hear them on cd recordings, 1973 movie, and live productions. Chords are also included for guitar players.
Good book for beginners.......2000-03-27
This book contains the partitures of the songs mentioned in Uppercase in the Editorial's review and the lyrics for all the other songs of this great rock-opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The partitures are written for piano, with chords for guitar and lyrics, and are quite faithful to the original songs. They aren't difficult, so you can play them without too much troubles and remember with pleasure the voices of Yvonne Elliman, Carl Anderson, Ted Neeley and the other artists. This book doesn't give you a complete satisfaction if you are instead looking for a more "seriously" thing, with all the partitures including the instrumental songs.

Is this the only book about CATS! the musical?.......2007-08-28
I read a review that said the pictures were crisp. I ordered the book and found the pictures to be blurry and unprofessional. They look like they were taken from the front row during a performance with the wrong film speed and light setting on the camera. I was very disappointed with the pictures and overall quality of the book. This is not a high quality book of the musical, but I can't seem to find any other book about the broadway musical that contains pictures. Too bad.

I loved the stage musical and didn't understand a word except for "Memories". And I love the video to death. But this book is no way a companion to the video, unless you're just looking for the words to the songs. In that case you've spent way too much (the lyrics can be had on the WEB)! The cast in this book is different than the Video and if you have young kids who love the video like mine do, they are going to ask (and say)"Why daddy does Gus look different, or that's not Gus". The only worth while text is from Andrew Llyod Webber and it happens to be the shortest article of the 4 included. I was disappointed to say the least and in hind sight find that 99% of the reviews are "irrationally" positive and not at all realistic.

This book is wonderful and added to my huge collection. It might not be as valuble as the two wigs or the costume, but it is still a cool book!

He chronicles the triumphs and tragedies of Lloyd Webber's Sunset Boulevard, Whistle Down the Wind, the film version of Evita, his third marriage, and the financial upheaval at The Really Useful Company, Lloyd Webber's production group. Walsh attempts to hack through the mass of Fleet Street sensationalism and get at what is really happening in the life of this talented, troubled man. Okay, so there is very limited published information about Andrew Lloyd Webber, although ther eis plenty about his shows, there is little about the man himself. This is why this book is a great buy.
I find Walsh gets himself into a repeated pattern with each chapter, and the sypnosis of each story becomes very tiresome and the the musical analysis (ie, a key signature and time signature) is not really worth doing. Any five year old can open Lloyd Webbers music and find out the key and time signature. I wanted more detail about the music.
The book I brought was the reprinted one with information about Sunset, Whistle and the movie of Evita, although it was already worth the reprint and these chapters are no where near as enthused or informative as the previous chapters. Very disappointing, but still a great buy and well worth getting.
A must-have book for all fans of Lloyd Webber and his work........2003-01-20
This is a must-have for Lloyd Webber fans; it truly is an in-depth account of his life and work. Packed full of information and many photographs, it was an interesting read. It has been claimed that Walsh concentrates too much on the chapter featuring "Phantom of the Opera", but I for one cannot blame him! Walsh has reason to, as he states "Phantom" was the first musical where Lloyd Webber developed his more mature style and a strong sense of key association than in his previous musicals. (He also admits it was after viewing "Phantom" he had the notion to write the book in the first place.)
The only reason why I would not give this book the full five stars is the fact it may be somewhat frustrating to read for musicologists and music students who wish to study Lloyd Webber's style in depth. Walsh tantalizes the reader with only brief excursions into analysis of the music; e.g. very brief descriptions of the keys and rhythms the songs are in, with no printed musical examples on how Lloyd Webber constructs the fabric of his scores.
However, in all, I would certainly recommend this book.

My first impression of this book was that Michael Walsh must only be a fan of The Phantom of the Opera. It honestly seems to be the only show that he doesn't have an unkind word for. However, once you get past the comments that might be offensive to serious fans, you find a great wealth of material on the inside life of Lord Lloyd Webber. Everything is covered in this book, from the origins of his nickname (Bumper) to Jean's pet monkeys and days in "Bohemian" Lloyd Webberdom, to the recent revivals and productions of his shows. Even the musical structures of some songs from each show are analyzed. This is only the beginning; there is lots of great information that any fan will find infinitely interesting. Now if only Mr. Walsh would lighten up....
