Book Description

Now reissued – William March's 1954 classic thriller that's as chilling, intelligent and timely as ever before. This paperback reissue includes a new P.S. section with author interviews, insights, features, suggested reading and more.

What happens to ordinary families into whose midst a child serial killer is born? This is the question at the center of William march's classic thriller. After its initial publication in 1954, the book went on to become a million–copy bestseller, a wildly successful Broadway show, and a Warner Brothers film. The spine–tingling tale of little Rhoda Penmark had a tremendous impact on the thriller genre and generated a whole perdurable crop of creepy kids. Today, The Bad Seed remains a masterpiece of suspense that's as chilling, intelligent, and timely as ever before.

5 out of 5 stars rhoda is FABULOUS - - period........2007-08-21

i got this book at noon the other day and finished it by eight that evening - - a page turner, gripping, gothic, yet campy and with a sense of irony about that campiness that endeared the book to me.
eloquently written, his language is engaging yet elegant, revealing and graphic, yet dark and mysterious, like sinister housewife gossip and whispered rumours.
if you root for the anti-hero (and believe me this book has one HELL of a little anti-hero to offer), this is definitely the book for you. i found myself time and again reading it, eyes wide, mouth open... "oh my god. she's the devil... she's FABULOUS!!" Rhoda is an utterly timeless character, and you can tell the author cares about her a lot; she's a little machine, a robot with no soul, she plays back what you want to hear like a broken record and kills without a second thought, but somehow you admire her, even begin to be taken in by her.
this book captures the feeling of the time it takes place, i see some incredibly caucasian small southern/east-coast town, a nightmare of whitewash, green grass, sunshine and trees and bushes bursting with flowers.

i would like to say how mortified that i am that Eli Roth is helming the (surprise!) REMAKE of this story... hollywood. rotters. yech.

so before the whole franchise becomes tainted with modern horror dreck of the ilk of hostel and saw, READ THIS BOOK and fall in love with it.

5 out of 5 stars The murderous preteen has unfortunately become a banal headline.......2007-01-21

As with many authors and artists William March's work was rejected and he died a broken man. Publishers told him that The Bad Seed lacked verisimilitude. The truth is there have always been sociopathic children among us, but today the headline is all too common. I was inspired to read this classic after reading Dr. Robert D. Hares Without Conscience: The disturbing world of the psychopaths among us. Even though The Bad Seed is a work of fiction March had some really good insights that Dr. Hare quoted.

The only thing I found slightly corny about the book was that March tried to incorporate a fictional encounter with the real psychoanalyst, Sigmund Freud. Also the book is much better than the original movie version. [...]

5 out of 5 stars An enduring classic of suspense.......2007-01-07

To all outward appearances, little Rhoda Penmark is every parent's dream. Quiet, neat, studious, and polite, the eight year old easily charms most adults. But lurking under Rhoda's pleasant facade is a ruthless, calculating sociopath who is willing to kill to get what she wants. Her first victim is an ex-landlady who promised her a pretty bauble in her will. Her second victim is a classmate who wins an award Rhoda covets. The third, a janitor who makes the mistake of threatening to expose her.

This thin volume is so chilling because March portrays Rhoda so realistically. Like most eight year olds, Rhoda can be willful and selfish, but where most children would probably throw a tantrum, Rhoda takes deadly action. The horror is increased by her mother's complicity in her daughter's crimes--Christine Penmark's failure to accept the truth, and her failure to take action against Rhoda once the seeds of doubt have been planted in her mind, frustrate and frighten the reader. Eventually, Christine does react, but is it too late? Can a force of nature like Rhoda be stopped? You'll have to read the utterly absorbing The Bad Seed to discover the surprising and disturbing answer.

4 out of 5 stars Devilish kids are freaky.......2006-05-26

A very disturbing tale, not only regarding the child but the generational "curse" the story depicts. Good for a weekend scare!

3 out of 5 stars Creepy. Disturbing. Unsettling........2006-04-21

The Bad Seed, a 1954 best-selling novel by William March, is a psychological thriller that leaves you with mental goose bumps at the end. Taking place in a small, socially rigid town in the seemingly blah era of post-WWII , the story tells the tale of eight-year-old serial killer Rhoda Penmark and the fatal effects of her evil on family and friends.

As the novel progresses, Rhoda blooms into an experienced and successful murderess while Rhoda's mother, Christine, struggles passionately between her love for her daughter and the horror of what her daughter really is - all while uncovering her own terrifying past.

If you are looking for a quick, suspenseful read, the Bad Seed is for you. While the book does have a slightly dated feel, and sections of Christine Penmark's dialogue screams with cliches, The Bad Seed remains a good choice for reading during a weekend at the beach or on a rainy Saturday. The ending is satisfying, and you'll discover after you finish that somehow during the novel, William March successfully planted a seed in your mind - the seed that it is possible for pure evil to appear in the form of a child.

Bad seeds, belles-lettres, rule breakers, shrieking violets, bar belles--how could any collection of impudent sketches that celebrates and lampoons the American Southern belle go wrong? Most of the women on these pages are instantly recognizable. Among those whose exploits or imagination vaulted them to fame are writers Carson McCullers and Anne Rice; emancipator Harriet Tubman; actress and one-time town owner Kim Basinger; ex-Black Panther Angela Davis; '30s outlaw Bonnie Parker; and mascara maven Tammy Faye Baker. A few little-knowns and relative newcomers have elbowed their way on stage, too: Dorothy Allison, author of Bastard out of Carolina; Anna Edson Taylor, the first barrel-rider over Niagra Falls; and women's basketball star Luisa Harris-Stewart.

2 out of 5 stars Don't Be Fooled By Scarlett O'Hara on the Cover.......2006-02-14

I bought this book because I loved the cover. Admittedly, I didn't do much research about it, but wish I had. This book is anything but about true Southern Belles. There are a few women in this book who might fit the real description, but even they are marred by the author's insistence on revealing all the negative and dark side of these women. Don't be fooled..this book is not about true Southern Belles. I was born, and raised partially, in the South and was taught that a true Southern Belle is a woman who embraces her feminity, is proud of her heritage, passes on traditions and always conducts herself like a lady. That definition seems to upset the author because she includes many women who are anything but Southern Belles. Just because a person was born in the South doesn't make them a Southern Belle. The author seems to think that just by virtue of being Southern born, that makes one a "Belle." Her book proves just the opposite. Then when I finished the book, I saw that the publisher is located in Berkeley, CA (surprise!) and is associated with a group called The Wild Women Association, also out of Berkeley. If you are looking for a book about true Southern Women, a.k.a, Belles, I suggest you read Ronda Rich's book, "What Southern Women Know (That Every Woman Should)" or Deborah Ford's "G.R.I.T.S. - Girls Raised in the South."

4 out of 5 stars Hells Yea!.......2003-02-06

I picked this book up at the Margaret Mitchell Museum in Atlanta. Being a southern woman I found the title and the subject matter interesting. Boy am I ever glad I read this little book! It was pretty intriguing to read 2-3 page summaries about historical and current southern women who've made an impact or just made there presence known. I'd recommend this book to anyone and everyone. It's a quick and enlightening read.

5 out of 5 stars Fun.......2002-12-19

This is a great little find. There are some great quotes and it's just plain fun. Who ever knew that there were pirate belles or native american belles, American revolution and confederate spy belles.

4 out of 5 stars In Praise of Southern Women.......2002-09-17

A glorious book - a celebration of southern women, and all that they stand for, from their notorious southern charm to their unique and equally-infamous 'darker' side. They're all here - Tallulah Bankhead, Scarlet O'Hara, Priscilla Presley, as are many lesser-known but just as 'potent' southern belles. Photos, tributes, anecdotes, photos. The entertainment quotient is high and what a history lesson!!!

4 out of 5 stars Parochialism? No, just good fun.......2000-07-16

I admit it, the enchanting cover photo of Vivien Leigh (Scarlett O'Hara) compelled me to buy this book..but I was also intrigued by the sales-pitch blurb on the back cover. Inside, I was pleasantly surprised, with many of my favourite southern gals featured, including Selena, Anne Rice, Margaret Mitchell, Carson McCullers. Hell's Belles is written in exuberant tabloid style (witness the title!)and contains interesting anecdotes and fascinating accounts of Southerners, most of whom I've never heard of but leave me wanting to know more..luckily, Ballenger provides a list of references. The only thing that left me feeling a bit miffed is some blatant Women's press advertisment at the back - as if we need reminding of 'role models' and 'empowerment'and other genderist stuff to feel good about ourselves! Subtle it is not. And one question - drag queens are belles, yes? but Truman Capote?

Book Description

The first story arc of the acclaimed return of SWAMP THING is collected in BAD SEED, reprinting issues #1-6 of the new ongoing series written by Andy Diggle and illustrated by Enrique Breccia. BAD SEED finds the Swamp Thing joined to the Earth itself, surpassing even his old power as the champion of the Green, and no longer inhibited by the human conscience of his original template, Alec Holland. Without this constraint, the Swamp Thing threatens to re-balance the natural world at the cost of countless human casualties #151; including his own daughter Tef+ and his love, Abby #151; unless the man who originally showed him his true nature, John Constantine, can find a way to stop him...

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good relaunch of Earth's Elemental.......2005-10-14

Andy Diggle, while his run was very short on the series, adequately re-acquainted readers with the big leafy superhero with some of the worst luck ever. It has been years since Alec Holland/Swamp Thing became Earth's elemental, with control over all aspects of nature. Having shed his human soul, he isn't so warm to mankind anymore. Enter his ex-wife, his teenage daughter, and a certain mage in a trenchcoat, and some real trouble is brewing.
Diggle and Breccia make for a good team. Diggle obviously relishes in the past storylines of ST, while Breccia goes hog wild creating slimy, hideous creatures. New readers, however, will be a bit puzzled. I've read every volume of Swamp Thing available and I actually became lost at times. In the gap between Regenesis and Bad Seed, a LOT happened to the Holland family. I read up some online to get a good idea... but between Rick Veitch's run, a series of bad decisions following that, a concluding run on the original Vertigo title by Mark Millar, and a relaunch title primarily featuring Tefe (Alec and Abby's daughter), many people missed a lot. And Diggle does not do much to bring us up to speed. Aside from this, however, it is a treat for fans to see the title revamped, and Diggle's obvious enthusiasm is contagious.
My advice: read the other volumes first, get up to speed online, then delve into the new series. It's really worth the effort.

5 out of 5 stars A genuine classic, better with age.......2006-10-03

Most people who are familiar with "The Bad Seed" probably recall the Warner Bros. film, with Nancy Kelly and Patty McCormack. But William March's original novel is worth discussing and revisiting. In its elegantly clipped language, its understated sense of morbid horror and its exploration of the complex themes of guilt and punishment, it's a very American classic. Though in the fifty-odd years since its publication, killer children have become sadly commonplace, the book's contrast between the "innocence" of the Eisenhower era and corruption lurking beneath the surface are still compelling. The book is actually more about the devil child's mother, Christine--a simple, honest, and well-meaning woman who finds herself completely undone when she discovers the homocidal tendencies in her eight-year old daughter. Events and images that bordered on camp in the film are so cleverly rendered here that the chills remain, and Christine's journey from confusion to tension to fear to breakdown is startlingly presented by a writer who understood guilt extraordinarily well. For those who loved the film, the book should be required reading. For those who feel bludgeoned by the excesses of modern horror, this is a stylish and worthwhile alternative that still delivers its share of shudders and scares. Beautifully done.

Book Description

Nick Cave has repeatedly succeeded in creating idiosyncratic, obsessive lyrical visions which make no concession to prevailing musical fads. His personal life has been equally turbulent and this book tells the full story of his drug addiction. It offers an overview of his career to date, unravelling the motivation of this reluctant icon and exploring his unique appeal. With exclusive interviews with Cave's fellow musicians, friends, and colleagues, Johnston illustrates a life lived in barely controlled chaos and provides a vivid portrait of a maverick artist.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Better Than Dax.......2003-04-25

Being a rather recently converted fanatic of the music of Nick Cave, I knew nothing about him and only tidbits about where he came from musically. I first read The Life and Music of Nick Cave by Maximilian Dax, but it was a very uneven bit of puffery. So, hungering for more information, I bought Bad Seed.
Bad Seed is not a bad book. While Ian Johnston is not the most eloquent writer around, he is much better than Dax. Bad Seed is well organized, informative, and at times very witty. And while this volume does not contain near the number of pictures that Dax's does, the photos it does have are germane to Cave's career.
Johnston's portrait of Cave's personality gives the reader a fresh understanding of what he is about. He charts Cave's growth from a brash and impetuous young rock shouter to the mature and nuanced performer he became. And I like some of the stories of some of his early riotous behavior. One that strikes me as humorous is the story of him playing at a street festival in Melbourne and his father coming unexpectedly to see him perform for the first time. Cave was rolling around in the gutter screaming into the microphone when he just happened to glimpse his father looking at him with a look of total bewilderment on his face. Picture that! Other stories of drunken revelry and drug crazed antics were equally amusing. But it is also refreshing to read how Cave took control of his life and drew back from the abyss into which so many performers fall.
In addition to his music, Bad Seed provides a look at his writing, his acting, and his twin obsessions with the Bible and with the degeneracy into which one can sink. One learns too, of artists who have influenced his songwriting and style. I knew he admired Lee Hazlewood and Johnny Cash from Dax, I had no idea he liked Karen Carpenter!
The only negative really is that Johnston spends too much time on Cave's early years and not nearly enough time on his life and music from Tender Prey forward.
If you are eager to know about Nick Cave, Bad Seed is a good place to start.

3 out of 5 stars pretty good Bad Seed.......2002-05-31

Being that the author's brother guested as Bad Seeds guitarist on Lollapalooza '94, you might expect this unauthorised biography to be a whitewash. Yet a remarkably frank portrait emerges from the mouths of cohorts like Mick Harvey, Rowland Howard and engineer Tony Cohen. Gnarly drug stories come thick and fast. Like the Birthday Party gig in Zurich where the mike wasn't properly earthed so Cave got fried every time he touched metal--but was too f**ked up to notice. Or the time he shot up on the subway and then started scribbling out lyric ideas in his own blood with the needle. In all, it's a valiant attempt at nailing down this elusive crooner.

5 out of 5 stars fascinating book about a fascinating man.......2002-05-13

This book is wonderful. I just couldn't put it down. It's thoroughly detailed, and full of great anecdotes about Nick and his bandmates, which made me laugh more than anything I've read for a long time.
It's certainly a worthy biography of this remarkable artist.

3 out of 5 stars PainfullyDry Text Robs Cave Of The Fire Of His MadPossession.......1999-06-19

The squalid details of Cave's adult existence seem as dark as any song or book he's written, yet Johnston renders them with all the lyrical intensity of a color-blind mute. Ah would have loved this book of 80s decadence and frantic violent genius had it not been bloated with tedious record-deal sagas & written like a stock market paper. Gawd almighty, Johnston's style isn't worthy of the word style. Somehow, through some miracle in reverse, his utter soullessness manages to make even Nick Cave's life read dull. Mah secret prayer is that Cave will write his own blasted biography so no other poor fools have to slog through this dreadful text for glimmers of the man behind the myth.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough coverage of an amazing singer and writer.......1999-04-10

More than just about Cave's music, this book reveals his obsessions over everything he does. While Johnston at times seems unable to be critical in his opinions, the details he gives of Cave's writing and lifestyle more than make up for the hero worship. An excellent book that you'll finish in no time.

Penzler Pick, March 2002: In this, the fourth book (and first hardcover) featuring Alex Bernier, a young reporter on the newspaper in an upstate New York college town, the motive for murder lies hidden in the latest local controversy. To wit: Benson University, which dominates the town of Gabriel (think, for example, of Cornell University and Ithaca, where this talented young author lives), has been playing host to a biotech conference, and, as we all know, such events are veritable magnets for mischief in a world where potentially violent protest groups believe, just as their antagonists do, that the ends fully justify the means.

In this case, there are numerous "bad seeds" for protestors to rail against, ranging from Golden Rice (bioengineered to contain dozens of unnaturally occurring "micronutrients") to potatoes and bananas that are capable of delivering vaccines to millions without the bother of injection. One could also call the militant members of the greener-than-green organization known as Don't Break the Food Chain bad seeds since, despite their polite middle-class upbringings, they seem to have little conscience when it comes to arrogantly taking the law into their own hands.

Another candidate for the title of bad seed is the crusading amazon of a professor, the late and little-lamented Kate Barnett, who was willing to pervert her scientific knowledge in the name of progress.

As lively narrator Alex Bernier eventually learns, what's at stake at the conference is even more ethically questionable that the quest for "better broccoli," and the story behind the story turns out to be even hotter than a peck of chili peppers. Beth Saulnier is a clever observer of her generation and an eminently sane commentator on the follies and foibles of extremists young and old, as well as funny enough to compare with the endlessly hilarious Janet Evanovich. --Otto Penzler

5 out of 5 stars A Sharp Reporter, Suspects and Secrets.......2003-10-06

When a murder in academia leaves Benson College PR person Lane Freeman dead by poison and his wife (the Dean of Agriculture) in prison, no one in small-town Gabriel is surprised, since they were an extremely unhappy couple. Nor does anyone take particular note of the protest happening outside a conference at the school on agricultural biotechnology, until a few bombs destroy part of the campus, and the school's popular and revered head biotech professor is found beaten to death.

Not satisfied with the obvious explanations for the murder, Alex Bernier (a saucy twenty-something newspaper reporter whose nose for news puts her right in the thick of things) does a little digging, and comes up with a gaggle of suspects and secrets, including a plan to introduce genetically modified food to an unsuspecting populace. But those who wish their secrets to remain secret will stop at nothing to save themselves.

This book is a super five star treat that I think you'll enjoy very much, and you'll more than likely even get a chuckle or two out of it.

I read this book because the review claimed that the town of Gabriel is really Ithaca, NY and that Benson College is in reality Cornell University, my alma mater. After reading Bad Seed I'm hooked on the charachter of Alex Bernier. She,s tough and intelligent and just insecure enough to make her lovable. Surrounded by her nutty but loyal friends and coworkers she wise cracks her way through this intriguing and suspenseful mystery about a new strain of rice being developed at the Ag School and the mayhem and murder that ensue. I've already ordered Saulnier's previous three books and look forward to the publication of the next Alex Bernier mystery. This story was a great read whether or not you attended Cornell University or lived in Ithaca, but add a star if you did.

The fourth book in the Alex Bernier series, and the first in hardcover, brings the sharp and irrevent reporter into harm's way as she tries to solve two bombings and a brutal death on the local college campus. She pits her investigative skills, and those of her newpaper cohorts, against a group of shadowy bioterrorists. Filled with great characters, snappy writing, and a compelling story. Couldn't put it down. A great sequel to "Reliable Sources," "Distemper," and "The Fourth Wall," although it can stand alone. A new, young writer to watch.

5 out of 5 stars Better and Better.......2002-02-08

I loved it! I have now flown through all four of Saulnier's books found each of them smart, funny and a terrific read. In Bad Seed, poor Alex Bernier, who seems to have an excess of death in her life, is caught up in a finely woven web of science, zealotry and current events. Through basic, hard nosed reporting she stumbles to the bottom of a global plot nestled in the little town of Ithaca. Talk about think global, act local- this one could literally be "ripped from the headlines." I pre-ordered it after reading the first three in the series and am now hoping she keeps this series going. Definitely worth picking this one up.

By the way, I was really disheartened by the Publishers Weekly review but decided to read the book anyway. Did they ever get it wrong! This book is fun and good.

    4 out of 5 stars A superb journalistic mystery.......2002-02-07

Hip, young journalist, Alex Bernier and her co-workers at the Gabriel Monitor have seen their fair share of excitement. But nothing like the "frankenfoods" debate.

When protesters at the local university gather to protest genetically modified food research, Alex is on the scene to cover the demonstration. What she didn't count on was having to report that the school's agriculture building exploded and that a prominent university spokeswoman had been beaten to death in her lab.

Alex also didn't count on having to solve the murder mystery herself.

Using her widely acclaimed Gen-X writing style, Beth Saulnier takes an issue from today's headlines and turns it into a fast-paced, thrilling mystery. Alex Bernier is as fun and irreverent as always as she wades deeply into the politics of protest and the corridors of university power.

A great addition to Saulnier's catalogue.

4 out of 5 stars The Bad Seed.......2007-09-04

Agatha Hock seems to live a perpetual game of let's pretend as she tries to get on with her life after, first her daughter disappears, and then her husband says he's going on a long hike. The question from page one is where are they and will they ever return? She tries to keep things as they were when they left so they'll find things the same when they do return. But as time passes, Agatha finds herself ina quandary. She must earn her living and her hold on her gardening column is threatened when her editor comes up with the idea of having people win visits to her expansive garden. Trouble is, her only garden is a small patch planted illicitly in her yard. Agatha accepts the challenge of finding a place where she can build this garden so her editor will be satisfied. The hunt takes her to a town with the unlikely name of Wombat where she discovers an overgrown shack she can afford. Things don't go quite as planned. She can't make a garden grow in soil that feeds only poisonous plants and a strange couple show up, claiming they have reservations at the hotel that once occupied the land where her house is sited. An underground spring bubbles forth from under her house and she finds a chance at some happiness again. Then her daughter returns home. The Bad Seed is an interesting study of a woman alone who seems not to know exactly what she wants to do. When she tries to sort things out, what happens will surprise you. Author Maurilla Meehan takes the reader behind the scenes into the darker side that life sometimes offers.

4 out of 5 stars Great candid photos from the Bad Seeds 1992 tour.......1998-09-14

Photographer Peter Milne went on the road with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, who allowed him to take pictures of the tour.

These wonderful black and white shots are most candid, many catching band members unaware, or, at best, unwilling, making for some amazing images.

A bonus is the forward written by Nick Cave, who expresses his feelings about the photographer in his own interminable way, making this alone worth purchase.

    Brilliant!
