Great help for the beginner!.......2007-03-25
I bought this book for my 12 yr old daughter. She was audtitioning for the community theater and needed to prepare 16 measures of a song. The best part about the book for her was the cd. It has just the piano playing the songs. We don't own a piano so it enabled her to practice singing with the piano and she knew what it would sound like. It has lots of classic songs that you know. I definiitely reccommend it for beginners!
My budding vocalist loves it!.......2007-01-10
My 13-year-old is taking group voice lessons. Last year, we just had to go with the book the teacher chose. She just didn't connect with any of the songs in it. This year, we shopped for our own and bought on Amazon because the price was so much more reasonable than from the publisher's website. This book had many songs that she really enjoys! We love the accompanyment CD and often keep it in the car so she can gain additional practice, especially while we're traveling to/from her lessons. For recital, she sang both "God Help the Outcasts," which brought serious tears to her daddy's eyes and "Think of Me." The arrangements are slightly different from the movie versions, but still very nice. If you're not sure which book to get, I recommend checking at the Hal Leonard website for additonal details but then come back here to order for the great price and service! Just make sure that you compare the identical book and read carefully for such items as the accompanyment CD, as they have many similarly-named choices.
My daughter now wants me to get the book of solos from the musical "Wicked!" In this family, we love 'defying gravity.'
Have a great day!

Well done.......2006-11-11
This has some great songs, especially for a beginner or high school student. I am a voice teacher and use the accomaniment cd which is also very well done.
Great book for teaching voice.......2006-11-04
This was one of the first books I purchased when I started teaching private voice lessons 3 years ago. It is such a great tool for the classroom especially because it comes with a CD of accompaniment tracks. It allows me to get away from the piano and pay attention to the student. The only problem with this book is the popularity....if that can really be a problem. I often hear that this is what teenage girls always get the audition selections from so everyone tends to sing the same thing.
Thoroughly enjoyable!.......2006-03-02
This is my favorite Amazon purchase to date. My children and I have had a lot of fun with this book. They can't read yet, but we sit around the CD player or in the car and they sing along with their Disney favorites and are learning the words to many other famous and more complicated works. South Pacific, Cats, Grease, The Phantom of the Opera, Camelot, Oklahoma, Les Miserables, . . . Classic! There is a lot that can be learned and enjoyed among the 33 titles and 158 pages of music. Well worth it.

Really makes you work, but you'll learn very quickly with this book. It's well laid out and not so difficult that you'll get frustrated and give up.

Excellent teaching book.......2007-03-26
This book highly recommended by my son's guitar teacher, who is getting his Master's degree in classical guitar performance. It doesn't use those beginning songs that are boring to kids. It really keeps their interest and is very thorough. My son (11 yrs) is very happy with it and doesn't ask for my help (that's good ~ cuz I don't play the guitar :-)
Awesome.......2007-02-22
This book is awesome. I recently finished but I'm in the process of review currently. The book takes you from the very basics and has you reading in 4 positions by the end of the book. It also gives you 5 or 6 major scale fingerings as well as tons of chord forms, chord reading etudes, picking etudes, etc. The book is a complete system for becoming complete player and every aspect of beginner playing is covered here. Everything is planned out in a genius way thanks to William Leavitt, one of the greatest guitar teachers in history. This book is heavy and I honestly wouldn't reccomend it to the straight beginner because it's too brainy and hard. If you've been playing for awhile and you're ready to get serious and learn to read then this is the perfect book. In my opinion this is the greatest book you'll find out there and I can't recommend it enough. I'll warn you though, it's no cake walk and takes time and dedication (which will be worthwhile!).
excellent (like anyone else NEEDS to say it...).......2006-07-11
Six or more stars, really.
I finally bought this book after "thinking about it" forever. (I have a problem with the thinking thing.) Well, just as has been said before... drop everything else and go through these books. You'll be WAY ahead if you do. I studied classical guitar for a year in college (though I'm primarily a jazz-rock-etc. player), and this SHOULD have been the book they used back then. The exercises are melodic enough that anyone with an ear should be able to follow them with little difficulty, and still you'll learn everything you need to learn.
The progression of exercises is sensible, and everything holds together as a meaningful whole, an attribute lacking in most guitar instruction books. (Though you may want to add Arnie Berle's "New Guitar Techniques for Sight Reading" as well. Not that there's a gap in Leavitt's books, just that Berle's approach may broaden your approach a bit. Berle's other books are good as well, in my opinion.)
So don't think (as I did) that this is a method for "that kind of player over there, but not me," as I did. Regardless of your intended style, what you will get here will put you years ahead if you just do it. After that, you'll be ready to tackle anything - it'll still be work, it always will be, but you won't spin your wheels as hundreds of thousands of players do.
Guitar players owe something good to Leavitt for this book, really. It's obviously the product of a sensible, disciplined, knowledgable and concerned mind.
Book Description
Gerhard Graf-Martinez is a passionate flamenco guitarist and teacher. The wealth of his knowledge is captured in this two-volume work, which also reflects valuable experience gained from his activities as a tutor at national and international seminars and workshops. The CD included with volume 1 contains all the pieces and musical examples for Volumes 1 and 2. Besides being a pure pleasure to listen to "Flamenco puro," it also conveys the authentic sound and the pulsating "compas" of this music. This is the only way to learn to play the music properly yourself. The DVD will take you to the passionate world of Flamenco, and you will quickly immerse yourself in this Spanish musical phenomenon.

The best value in Flamenco Guitar lessons --- EVER.......2007-06-25
Gerhard Graf-Martínez has produced an excellent lesson on Flamenco guitar. I have taken weekly lessons for five years in this discipline and find Volume I adequately challenging.
Graf-Martínez presents technique in great detail and the DVD provides video examples which clear any confusion. The slow-tempo versions of pieces and exercises are slow-enough that I find I can play-along with him after a few minutes learning each. I find I can then play the correct-tempo versions after a few days.
I am looking forward to Volume II.
Flamenco guitarist.......2007-05-20
Please see my review for the volume 2. This is the same review as the books should be together as one set. They compliment each other so well.
Gerhard is a great master. I wish I could meet him some day.
Enjoy.
Good, but not for the beginner.......2007-04-28
Overview
======
Gerhard Graf-Martínez, according to the Preface, has played guitar for forty years, and been a professional Flamenco player and teacher for over twenty, having organised classes with Andrés Batista in 1983 and 1984. Shortly after giving this information, the author writes: "I will be pleased to answer any questions related to this guitar method and Flamenco in general", giving address, phone, fax, website and e-mail ! This is certainly a generous, not to say astonishing, offer.
His Flamenco Guitar Method is an ambitious undertaking, comprising two DVDs and their corresponding books, plus a CD.
This Method is not for beginners to the guitar, although it might serve for beginners to Flamenco: "Notation and tablature are not explained in this book because I assume that everyone knows these facts, as well as the basic techniques of the classical guitar". I would advise at least a year of playing, and preferably two, before attempting it. Also, of course, to play any kind of music well you must listen to it -- lots of it -- until you know it intimately.
The books I received are entirely in English; German versions are also available. The DVDs allow either German or English to be selected. In either case the underlying video is the same, but if English is chosen the captions are in English -- as is the audio, except when the author is shown speaking. When the latter happens, his German explanations are muted, while he provides voice-overs in English that is fluent, clear and grammatical. The effect is quite satisfactory, rather like the BBC showing one of Yasser Arafat's speeches. There is none of the nightmarish sensation you get from the dubbing in old Bruce Lee movies.
The English of the books is also idiomatic (with a very few exceptions, noted later). Mercifully, the English as She Is Spoke days of books like "Historia y técnica de la guitarra flamenca" seem to be behind us.
Content
======
Volume 1 is concerned primarily with building technique. It exhibits a finer-grained attention to detail than I have yet seen, starting with photographs of, and a discussion of, the different playing-positions of Manolo Sanlúcar, Sabicas and Paco de Lucía, plus the traditional position and the casual one with legs crossed.
The first glitches come with the explanation of signs. We may easily forgive the use of "mano izquierda" and "derecha" for left and right hands, similarly "bemol" and "sostenido" for flat and sharp. And the use of the German H for the note B, while an error in English, is understandable. But the symbols given for the strings of the guitar appear to be gibberish. Three of them seem to be from the Zapf Dingbats font, which certainly contains circled numbers that can be used for guitar string indications -- I use them myself. But only one of the symbols is a circled number, a 3, and that is assigned to the top E string; the other two symbols are an arrow and a club (card suit) symbol, assigned to the 4th & 3rd strings respectively.
Normalcy resumes with explanations of rasgueado, followed by rasgueado exercises. All the exercises in the book are simple but accurate flamenco rhythms. 3-finger, 4-finger and continuous rasgueado are covered.
From here we pass to thumb exercises, and then thumb plus rasgueado, progressing to ayudado (thumb plus finger), taps, and the right-hand rhythm for rumba, followed by more advanced types of rasgueado.
Lesson 5 switches to the topic of the flamenco guitar itself, its makers and its players. I particularly liked the chart on p. 82 showing how the styles of the famous guitarists of the last century have developed from each other. While I (and I doubt the author either) would not claim it expressed any fixed eternal truth, it gave (for example) Paco de Lucía's immediate ancestors as Estebán Sanlúcar, Sabicas, Escudero, and Ricardo via Ramón de Algeciras, which I thought was pretty accurate.
Next come discussions of nails, palmas, compás and the flamenco clock (which is a metaphor for understanding flamenco rhythms). The tutorial material of Volume 1 concludes with a page on the Phrygian mode, here referred to (correctly) as the modo dórico. Finally there is a pretty extensive glossary, a list of flamenco establishments, and an index.
Presentation
=========
The benchmark in instructional flamenco videos has hitherto been set by Encuentro Productions. The present production certainly matches this, and goes further to include features I have not yet seen elsewhere.
The demonstrations in the video, like the photographs in the book, are extremely clear. But further, by using the cursor buttons on your remote, you can vary the camera angle, from facing the artist to one of about 45°, which gives the best view of the right hand.
When musical examples are played, the bottom third of the screen shows the relevant tablature, with a moving cursor showing the notes currently being played (if you have Finale, you already know how this feature looks). But not only this, you can switch at will from a full-speed version to a slow version; the transition is absolutely seamless.
The picture quality is high, and the whole production is extremely professional.
As regards the book, I should also say that it also contains many good photographs of flamenco artists; in particular, absolutely beautiful black-and-white full-page ones by Elke Stolzenberg.
This book is also available in a version without the DVD (at the time of writing, Amazon enticingly invites you to buy both together). See also my review of Volume 2.
flamenco guitar lessons.......2007-03-08
Good book, well written, and well explained. I am using the practice methods and I am satisfied with my results. When I can play all the exercises by the end of this vol. 1 book (and I will be able to acomplish this) I feel I will be a pretty versatile flamenco guitsrist.
I will buy vol. 2 to continue the lesseons by Graf - Martinez.
I reccommend this flamenco guitar exercise book.

Very Good!!.......2007-09-26
This is a great book! The included CD makes the package!
A perfect 5 stars!!!
Flea has huge hands...or mine are too small..........2007-03-25
Every song is played straight through at normal speed and you can clearly hear every note. The tabs are great, but actualy reading the notation feels a lot easier to read. The only thing i would change is have single lick tracks or slowed down versions of songs along with the full length at speed tracks. this album isnt for beginners at all, but its not completly impossible.
Stadium Arcadium Bass Sheet Music.......2007-03-16
This is a great book! I've been playing bass for 3 years now and this is a really fun way to spend my free time. The cds are also a great addition; they really help out a lot if Flea's bass licks throw you for a loop. It's also just fun to play along with the CD's because they threw John in also. Also, if you can't read music, don't worry. Personally I'm a fan of reading actual music for many reasons, but if you haven't crossed that bridge in your bass playing career every song has tabs. This book is the ultimate hook up for any Red Hot Chili Pepper addicted Flea-loving bass fanatics! It rocks!
Great buy!.......2007-01-28
This is truly a great buy for any fan of Flea and the RHCP!
The book is well done and help me improve my playing quickly. Lot of fun!
I don't have nothing bad to say about it!
A must have for any bassist who loves Stadium Arcadium as much as he should!
Stadium Arcadium Bass Tab - you should get this!.......2007-01-15
As a medium ability player i found this book more of a challenge than some of the other RHCP publications over the years. However as I wanted a challenge this book has been 100% brilliant to me! Once you get going on Dani California the world is a happier place all round! Top album, top book - can't recommend it highly enough.

Great activity!.......2007-09-04
This was good for at least an hour of no-bickering drive time. It isn't "kiddie" music, so it's entertaining for the adults, as well. Several extra copies of the lyrics mean you can lose one without harm. The cover and binding are durable, to put up with the abuses of living in a family vehicle. I'm looking at the holiday version next.
Road Tested and Approved!.......2007-01-23
I road tested this item with my three children on a long car ride a couple of years ago. It was a huge hit with my family, so I highly recommend it at my website [...]. Even after two years, we still use it frequently on trips, so it has given us more than our money's worth.
It comes with a CD for the music and several extra copies of the lyrics in smaller booklets for everyone in the car (no fighting!). The CD does a great job of giving "musical cues" when you are supposed to start singing, and there is such a variety that there is sure to be something that everyone will like - including the adults!
One of our favorites is the "make your own blues" song. My kids loved making up their own lines for that song in addition to the suggested lyrics. They also really love "Big Rock Candy Mountain" which was full of hilarious kid humor. The backseat drumming is also very popular. One thing we also love to do with this is to practice singing the Star Spangled Banner together. It can be a hard song to sing sometimes, but my kids are now pros and can belt out our National Anthem with pride.
We never go on a road trip without this item. I'll be buying the Christmas version of this next.
Entertained my kids on a long car ride.......2006-11-03
I wasn't sure how this would go over with my 7 and 9 year old girls, but we had a lot of fun with it on a l-o-n-g car ride home from vacation this summer. Not all the songs were familiar to us, but learning the lyrics was part of the fun.
This gets three thumbs up from the girls and me and one from my husband, who was driving, and glad no one was complaining about being in the car so long.
all out fun with the american carioke.......2003-10-10
bought this book because my grandchildren and I enjoy singing together. we weren't in a car; we were in my house. we sang all of the songs and had a rollicking good time. it was all very jolly; buy it!

Great Fun!.......2007-05-22
If you like The Ventures you gotta have this book. Their greatest hits are tabbed so you can have fun soloing or put together an arrangement to play with your buddies or at a gig. I'm working my way through each tune with my Strat, enjoying every minute. A great book!
Book Description
From the very first lessons in Book 1, students are making music as they explore the piano keyboard through fun improvisation pieces called My Own Song. The beginning of the book introduces finger numbers, the black-key and white-key groups, and basic rhythm patterns. Directional reading is taught first by finger number, then by note name, and then by interval (stop, skip, and repeat). Once the students are introduced to the staff, they learn reading guides Bass F and Treble G and read by interval in several different hand positions. This package includes a Piano Lessons Book and CD featuring wonderful tracks to accompany the student during practice or performance.

Excellent program for 6 year old........2007-09-28
I'm using this to teach my six year old, and couldn't be more pleased. It moves at a really slow, easy pace which is exactly what she needs. She does not feel overwhelmed and yet finds the exercise challenging. She also gets the songs stuck in her head.
Great for early learners.......2006-10-10
I bought this book at the same time as a couple of the John Thompson books. Even though I learned with the John Thompsons, I think this book is great for early learners because it starts simply with finger numbers and pictures of the keys, without trying to teach note reading at the same time. My five year old is really enjoying the book so far and is enthusiastic about learning the piano. He is young enough that if you try and fit too much into the lesson at once, he loses interest. I definitely recommend this book for young ones.
excellent learning tool.......2006-07-13
This is a great book for beginners. The very first day the student is playing a little song. Easy to follow and understand even if you have no prior piano experience. I have tried others and did not like them, but I would definitely choose this method again and recommend it to others. The price is very reasonable and it comes with the CD.
Great Beginning Piano Book.......2006-04-20
I bought this book for my 4 year old daughter to begin piano as part of homeschooling for Kindergarten. I also borrowed Usborne's First Book of the Piano from the library and was glad I didn't buy it! Although I like that in Usborne's the notes are written with the letters C,B,A, etc, instead of finger numbers, there are way too many concepts per page and very very busy pages. Leonard's Piano book on the otherhand introduces one concept at a time and the pages are not cluttered. The CD is a great and fun feature. It has accompaniament music for each song the student plays, which not only is great for a "teacher" who doesn't play, but great that the student can hear the music as s/he is learning. A great way to teach piano, btw, is to "show" how the piece is played and is suppose to sound first and then let your child do it.
great for learning.......2006-01-30
I bought this book/cd for my 6 year old daughter. She is at that age where she will not let me show her how to do anything! She took the book and the cd and is teaching herself how to play the piano! She has given several "recitals" for our family and I am amazed at how much she has learned.
It is a wonderful introdution to the piano and I would highly recommend it for anyone, young or old.

Play Trumpet Today! - Level 1 (The Ultimate Self-Teaching Method).......2007-05-12
Play Trumpet Today! - Level 1 (The Ultimate Self-Teaching Method)
The best - the DVD is excellant and so simple to understand. The CD is terrific and the book is wonderful but you do need to be able to read music for the book as my son only started the DVD was the best part as it did describe everything he needed to understand with first time trumpet.
He has played this to his friends that come over and rehearse with him and they also found it wonderful, they are only 10 and 11 years old and understand it easily.
Also Amazon products arrive in the best packaging and safely delivered by courier, the books and items will never be damaged due the terrific packaging and their impecible service and communication is just refreshing to come across. Thanks for such good service and products and undersstanding when being asked many questions with fast and speedy answers
Perfect for Beginners.......2007-05-07
I hadn't played a trumpet for over sixty years. So, I didn't think I could pick up a horn and start where I left off.
Instead, I made the wise decision to purchase this package. The DVD was perfect in getting me started again.
I didn't play the CD, which follows each exercise, using a CD player. I brought the CD into iTunes, which made using it very easy. I'm now up to Track 43 and, while I still have a long way to go for an eighty-year-old, I feel I'm getting there one day at a time.
Highly recommended (and worth the small amount Amazon is asking).
A great book.......2007-03-29
This book starts with the bare necessities. Every couple of lessons shows a new note and technique. It's easy to understand. The DVD that came with it shows how to hold the trumpet and what it should sound like. I learned enough that I figured out how to play other songs. I taught myself to play the Wallace and Gromit theme song.
I'm eleven years old.
A good way to start!.......2006-01-30
This method is a good way to start playing trumpet.
It even teach the basics of music theory, in a simple manner, in respect of the traditonal terminologies.
Introducing after a few pages, some simple but funny studies, it makes learning much more enjoyable that traditional trumpet methods which, instead, make you go on for week on usefull but boring scales amd arpeggios.
The challenge to reach the skill necessary to play a simple, world famous jingle, gives you enough motivation to overcome the unavoidable difficulties this instrument will make you face.
There is only one lack: the embochure and base sound producing, cannot be learnt from a book... you need a few lesson from someone expert in the instrument.
After a few lesson, proceeding will be a natural progression: just remember that every instruments need dedication and regular training!
You CAN!.......2005-03-15
This book is pretty comprehensive. It takes you from holding the trumpet/cornet all the way to playing, in time, to music on the CD. I would have liked more info on how to get different octaves on the instrument. They tried, but maybe a book just can't provide everything. I would seriously consider this book if you are just beginning and want to learn the instrument on your own.
