Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Dynamite.......2007-09-24

They say dynamite comes in small packages. This little book is jammmed full of helpful hints for any business. The applications are very real and necessary still today in order take care of our most important assets, our employees. And at the same time continue to grow ourselves as better leaders. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Must buy.......2007-08-17

Easy to read and really pulls things together. I enjoyed this book so much I've ordered 4 more of Cottrell's management/leadership books.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent mentoring.......2007-08-10

Monday Morning Leadership is short and easy to read. Actually you can read it in one sitting. However, that does not lesson the value. Because the lessons are presented in such condensed fashion, they stand out. The lessons do not get lost in excess verbage.

There are excellent tips on the value of having the right employees and the high cost of having the wrong employees. Tony, the mentor, give sage advise about time management, taking responsibility and the need for managers to be aware of the needs of the employees.

Some of the better tips are: Everything you (as a manager) do matters.

People quit people before they quit companies.

...the primary reasons most executives fail are arrogance, out-of-control egos, and insensitivity.

The book finishes by stressing the importance of continual learning. Tony suggest reading 10 minutes per day. Personally I think you need to spend at least an hour per day on self-improvement with at least 30 minutes devoted to reading.

An excellent book, it can and should be read and referred to often.

3 out of 5 stars Good Content; Poor Presentation.......2007-08-01

This book was required reading for a leadership class I took. It has a number of good pearls, and I am glad I read it. However, the presentation is horrible. It is written as if it is the transcription of two people having a series of conversations over coffee. The dialog between the two people seems contrived and repetitive, even belittling at times. In the end, I could have gotten just as much out of the book if it had been condensed to a two-page list of bulleted items.

5 out of 5 stars Monday Morning Leadership: 8 Mentoring Sessions You Can't Afford to Miss.......2007-07-30

Excellent book. Quck and easy to read; very insightful. I have recommended it to others.

Book Description

America's favorite Woman of a Certain Age takes the law into her own hands when a band of jewel thieves targets her town

It's lonely and boring in Miss Julia's normally boisterous town, what with husband Sam off on a long-planned tour of Russia and Hazel Marie vacationing in Mexico with Mr. Pickens. After inviting twenty-five of her closest friends to a party in her home, Miss Julia discovers that she's been robbed—her jewelry, including her engagement ring (a perfect replica of Princess Diana's), is missing! According to the police, this is not the first time the town has been the target of thieves, but Miss Julia is determined to make it the last. Packing Little Lloyd into the car, Miss Julia heads to Palm Beach for sun, sand, and a stakeout. With Etta Mae Wiggins along for the ride and a positively sodden PI on retainer, it's only a matter of time before they get their men. Miss Julia Strikes Back will delight Ann Ross's growing legion of fans and will be the perfect gift for Mother's Day—or any day.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Amusing fluff.......2007-09-27

Miss Julia's jewelry is stolen while Sam (her husband) is away in Russia. Following a dubious-sounding lead by a local sheriff, she withdraws Lloyd from school and drives to Florida where she hires a private investigator to help her locate the thieves. Unfortunately, the PI is an alcoholic, and is more than Miss Julia can handle so she sends for acquaintance Etta Mae Wiggins to assist her. Together the four team up to find Miss Julia's property.

This was a light, entertaining audio. The plot was a little more fantastic than normal... (It reminded me of a Lucille Ball episode). Thankfully there was no Sam in this one. Sam's not a bad character, but he cramps Miss Julia's style. I liked Etta Mae, and Lloyd.... I was disappointed to see less of Lillian. I was lukewarm about Mr. Tuttle. I was a bit fed up with his alcoholism towards the end. Plus, he was so under-developed as a character, we never really understood why he drank, or what his real trouble was. 4 stars. Light amusing non-serious stuff.

2 out of 5 stars Miss Julia Strikes Back.......2007-07-17

Miss Julia is my favorite lady of a certain age. While she has always
in previous book been somewhat headstrung reckless and always in charge she made us love her more. In this book she was out of her element.
Chasing Jewel Thieves - the whole episode - seemed unbelievable and
out of her league. I think she has a problem. Perhaps a mental problem
or some other that needs to be checked out. I hope Sam, Lillian and
Lloyd will keep a close watch on her and see that she gets help.
I miss the old Miss Julia.

5 out of 5 stars delightfully funny.......2007-06-13

As usual, Miss Julia is her ingenious self. This book is delightfully funny and continues the tradition of "scrapes in the name of decency". I just wish Miss Ross would write them faster!

4 out of 5 stars Miss Julia is Miss Julia.......2007-06-08

It was nice to see Miss Julia get some of her gumption back in this episode. Her no-nonsense approach to getting back her jewelry is the old, sparky lady we came to love in the first couple of books. Highlighting another town character was a great addition. I did miss a couple of old friends though.

4 out of 5 stars Miss Julia Strikes Back.......2007-06-01

Very cute story. Miss Julia at her usual in control, but not really, self. Really enjoyable read!

5 out of 5 stars A Worthwhile Read for Any Multi-Family Real Estate Investor.......2007-09-30

I purchased and read this book after hearing an interview that talked about Ken's next book in the series--the more advanced version of this book. I've been a real-estate investor for some years and along with my two partners we own 1800 units in three western states. I've never before read an investment book that I didn't have some major disagreements with before reading this one. Actually, the only thing surprising to me was that Ken doesn't provide emergency lock-out service for his residents. We do, but many things in this business are counter-intuitive. I'd like to know his reasons. It's too bad he doesn't have a blog--and even though I'm not reviewing his personal website, he needs an update including downloads of the forms he promises to have available there in the book (they're still coming soon according to the web-site, but it's 3 years since the book came out).
There seems to be a lot of confusion among the reviewers as to who this book should appeal to. I think to all: from beginner to seasoned investor. Some who feel it doesn't address them in the reviews haven't paid attention. Buying single family homes and renting them is speculation. Small mom and pop rentals are also not investing any more than is flipping homes. I've watched these speculators come and go over the years--good luck to them they'll need it. Meanwhile if you're an ambitious 20 something who wants to go into real-estate who doesn't have the money, go to work for someone like me, or if you like more structure, for a large property management company and learn the business and you'll find lots of money available to you. If you're older, like I was, find some partners, take the risk and plan to work.
A saying I've always remembered is: Wise men learn from others' mistakes, fools from their own, and the rest just don't learn. I've always aspired to be at least a fool, but I wouldn't hesitate to learn from the mistakes of others. I recommend the book.

3 out of 5 stars Need more concrete answers.......2007-08-02

Book is a good read, but I felt I needed more concrete answers to my questions. Maybe more strategies or specific steps to take in different scenarios.

I have found another book that answered my questions and had more strategies to share. Bubble Proof: Real Estate Strategies that Work in any Market by Tonja Demoff. Great read!

3 out of 5 stars We'll talk about that later!.......2007-06-27

Author spends a lot of time telling you he will discuss it in a later chapter. Overall a decent book with relevent information.

5 out of 5 stars The answer!.......2007-06-10

If you are serious about investing in real estate, then this is the real estate "Bible" of investing.

5 out of 5 stars Great Real Estate Investment Book.......2007-05-14

This book was an excellent primer in Investing in Real Estate. I was extremely pleased with the easy to understand material, and guidelines it provided me on the subject. I would highly recommend it to anyone that is serious about investing in real estate.

Book Description

A funny, profound book about the enduring wisdom of dogs, from the host of the enormously popular National Dog Show

Charming and hilarious, It's Okay to Miss the Bed on the First Jump is more than a mere celebration of man's best friend. In this lighthearted and reflective exploration of how and why dogs have served as some of our most valuable and enlightened teachers, well-known and well- loved actor/show host John O'Hurley (Seinfeld, Dancing with the Stars) shares lessons learned from his life with canine companions, including: Every 15 Minutes Is a New Day; Never Miss a Nap; When One Person Stops Petting You, Move On; A Cold Can of Meat Is Still a Feast; and You're Only as Big as You Think You Are, to name a few.

“Dogs, after all, have pure hearts, trusting natures, a zest for living, noble characters, and an ability to take things in stride,” writes O'Hurley in the book's introduction. “They can be counted on, and are pleasant companions. They know what's important, always. How many humans do you know about which you could say the same?” At once poignantly moving and laugh-out-loud funny, It's Okay to Miss the Bed on the First Jump is a book for the dog lover on everyone's holiday shopping list.

4 out of 5 stars Views from a dog's best friend.......2007-08-04

Anyone familiar with Mr. O'Hurley's Seinfeld-game show personality will recognize it immediately from this book. If you have a close friend who's a dog and enjoy humor you can relate to his stories. Makes a great gift. Warning! Do not read this book in public. People may give you strange looks when you burst out laughing, particularly at inappropriate times.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2007-08-04

I read this book during a very difficult time in my life and it was absolutely the best medicine! I laughed so much that my then husband was ready to send me to the "funny farm". We can definitely learn a lot from our pets. John, since I read your book I take afternoon naps and feel much better! I own a supersized lazy dog, a wonderful Great Pyrenees.
Thanks for sharing your experience with us and thanks for the laughs!

5 out of 5 stars One great book for dog lovers!.......2007-07-28

I haven't read a book that was so much fun to read in a long time. For anyone that has a love of animals, especially dogs, this is a gem.

It brought back memories of my first dog and happy thoughts of the ones I have had since. It is quite obvious that the author has a very special place in his heart for "mans' best friend". I know that in my youth my dog was definately my best friend and one whose company I enjoyed the most!

5 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining.......2007-06-12

Light and humorous. A good read for any dog lover. John O'Hurley has a great sarcastic sense of humor.

5 out of 5 stars For Dog Lovers with Humor and Compassion.......2007-06-04

With understanding and wisdom, he shows us the way back to the life Christ had in mind when He set us free. Readers will discover what it means to have Christ living in them; how to experience the joy of the Lord daily; and why Christians still struggle with sin. Life’s too short to miss the real thing!

5 out of 5 stars Truth about the Truth.......2007-10-03

Hi - I'm from Denmark, my name is Martin Lauesen ...

I just bought and read this incredible book. It is so nice, that not everybody has gone mad. In Denmark a lot of people listen to false teaching, and are bound by error - this book could help them - it really help me see the truth, in new light - thanks !

My english is not very good, so i'll stop here - just wanted to say thanks !

5 out of 5 stars Classic Christianity.......2007-04-05

This is a great book and easy to read. Don't stop after the first chapter. You must read the whole book to understand exactly what is being said. This book is great for new Christians and for Christians who have been struggling to live a Christian life and may feel defeated by failure. God sees us complete in Christ. We may be maturing in Christ slowly but we can rest in knowing God sees us complete in Christ now!

1 out of 5 stars Classic Christianity by Bob George.......2007-04-01

(This should have appeared with a 5-star rating) A must for everyone who believes they are "born again," and for anyone who is not a "believer" and is seeking to understand true Christianity. Guaranteed to awaken the reader to basic truths that are more often than not overlooked (if not avoided or totally misunderstood to begin with) by much, if not most of the contemporary Christian world. This book has literally changed my life. I wish I could have been exposed to this liberating teaching decades ago--but then, better late than never...

5 out of 5 stars Great Book, especially for the Seeker.......2007-02-13

I have enjoyed this book immensely. It is the second time I've read it and this time it is the basis for a book study that I am involved with. Mr. George does a great job of taking life's tough questions and difficult situations and providing God's directions for dealing with those in a very open, easy-to-understand format. I highly recommend this book for anyone, no matter where you are at in your faith. Whether you are in a ministry leadership position or if you are seeking to know God, this is a great book. I encourage everyone to read it. It will help you grow.

5 out of 5 stars This book changed my life!.......2007-01-30

This book changed my life! It gave me a new and real perspective of who God is and how he sees me. Because of this book I no longer see God as someone sitting up in heaven with a wooden spoon waiting for me to mess up so that he can bop me on the head. Instead, I see him as God full of grace and mercy and who loves me so much that he can't wait to spend time with me! I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars We're making the world more beautiful!.......2007-08-04

This book arrived on the first day of our granddaughter's summer "vacation" with us and was an immediate hit for one and all. Well written with fine illustrations, our four-and-a-half year old was captivated from the start, and now our search is on for lupines that we will plant at her home and ours this coming season so that we too can "make the world a more beautiful place".

I used this book when I was teaching in second grade...years ago...forgot the title so asked Amazon to find The Lupine Lady.....and they found Miss Rumphius...I had tried Borders on the phone and they had no book by that name....but Amazon knew what I was looking for. Thank you. My Daughter-in-law has lupines growing in her yard and I wanted her to have this wonderful book. She was delighted with it.

Book Description

At last, construction begins on a new library for Bellehaven, a gift of Franklin Harrington, scion of old Bellehaven money, and one of the locally famous Harrington triplets. But when a freak snowstorm hits, Bellehaven is brought to its knees. Not so Miss Helma Zukas who is at her post, dispensing library information, overseeing wayward employees, and soothing a busload of stranded gamblers.

Suddenly, an explosion rocks the snowy day, destroying the library site, killing the benefactor and a penny–pinching city finance czar.

The snow melts but not trouble. Shockingly, Ms. Moon thrusts the new library project onto Helma. And Helma soon discovers why, uncovering secrets and shady dealings from start to finish – secrets in the library, in the City, and in the Harrington family – secrets worth killing for.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A low-keyed comedy of murder.......2007-08-31

The unflappable Miss Zukas is a delight, as are the internal politics of the Bellehaven Public Library. Unfortunately, the plot hinges on a preposterous device -- work has begun on building a new library on a choice piece of real estate without there being anything in writing anywhere to show that this is what the donor intends to build. If you can accept this as a given, you'll enjoy Catalogue of Death.

3 out of 5 stars Miss Zukas Mysteries.......2007-07-15

I am a great fan of Jo Dereske's writing. Miss Zukas, although rather uptight and solitary, is a very sensible and believable character. Miss Zukas's character is evolving and developing into a person who can be more comfortable with risks and relationships.

4 out of 5 stars New library site threatened.......2007-05-24

Miss Helma Zukas, intrepid librarian, is very much looking forward to a new library building for Bellehaven, Washington. The site for the new building has been generously donated by Franklin Harrington, a prominent Bellehaven citizen. An unusual snowstorm hits town, but Miss Zukas is determined to get to work, whatever the difficulties. She arrives and is greeted by a skeleton crew and a visit from Mr. Harrington himself. Franklin decides to visit the library building site, but unfortunately there is an explosion and the elderly philanthropist is killed. Miss Zukas' boss, Ms. Moon, is concerned that Mr. Harrington's heirs may not want the library project to continue, so she asks Miss Zukas to talk to them. Soon, Helma is gathering information about the agreement between the library and the Harringtons and is also trying to find out who killed Franklin. The more she delves into the Harrington family, the more secrets she finds out about them. Author Jo Dereske has created an interesting character in the prim and proper Miss Zukas and she injects just the right amount of red herrings to keep things interesting,

3 out of 5 stars Just okay.......2007-05-13

A snowstorm has hit Belhaven, and Miss Helma Zukas, the stereotypical librarian, finds herself in the midst of yet another mystery. This installment is not as interesting as others in the series.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasant.......2007-05-10

My anticipation may have ruined part of my enjoyment. This is the first Miss Zukas book that I've had to wait for - so expectations were high. This was not my favorite one.

Helma was the same as always; practical, purposeful and in the end, solved the mystery. Each of the characters were written consistently from the other books. The story flowed well and kept me turning pages into the night. Long-standing relationships progressed slowly or not at all; Wayne Gallant and Helma, Ruth and Paul, Helma and Boy Cat. There was less character development in this one than in the others.

Once again, the cover has little to do with the content. The cat was never in the library or had bloody feet. And the card catalogue didn't figure largely in the mystery either.

The reason why this isn't my favorite and it didn't get 5 stars is that the ending was a let down for me. It seemed anti-climatic after building up to the end point all those pages and the "culprit" was a disappointment as well. It didn't seem like the stakes were high enough in the end. This ended up differently from the other Zukas mysteries without the nail biting finish.

But it was an enjoyable read besides that. I'll still look forward to reading the next in the series and will hope that my misgivings on this book, won't happen in the next.

Book Description

When a close friend or family member dies, it can be difficult for children to express their feelings. This book helps boys and girls understand that death is a natural complement to life, and that grief and a sense of loss are normal feelings for them to have following a loved one's death. Titles in this sensitively presented series explore the dynamics of various relationships experienced by children of preschool through early school age. Kids are encouraged to understand personal feelings and social problems as a first step in dealing with them. Written by psychotherapist and counselor Pat Thomas, these books promote positive interaction among children, parents, and teachers. The story lines are simple and direct—easily accessible to younger children. There are full-color illustrations on every page.

We recently lost my father-in-law quite suddenly and at a young age....We have 3 girls (6, 4, and 1) and this book was a wonderful help! The explanations and pictures were clear and concise while still being sensitive to the tender emotions of the young child.

Helped me to explain the recent lost for my Grandson of bothj greatgrandmothers and his great grandfather whom we lost in close proximity to each other also it helped explain it to my heart.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT little book about death.......2007-06-13

I'm a child psychologist and got this book for my office. I am very impressed. It is simple, straightforward book full of warmth and empathy. The illustrations are very nice, and it has little "what about you?" discussion-starter boxes on several pages. I would highly recommend this book for young children who have questions about death.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Gem in a Confused D/S World.......2007-01-10

Is book explains the reality of D/S in a clear start-forward way, and by passes all the fluff; it's not about the sex it's about the experience.

A must read for anyone interested in D/S, it explained the why of problems that I have seen in several D/S relationships (mine and others).

Have I said enough, "GET THIS BOOK" if your interested in having a winning experience as a Dom or a Slave!!!!

5 out of 5 stars So you think you want a slave?.......2003-03-09

There are a lot of "how to" books around on BDSM, which mainly cover areas such as negotiating play, safewords, toys and scenes. There is a dearth of literature on the topic of D/s in a real life relationship. Miss Abernathy has attempted to fill that void with this manual, and has succeeded admirably.

This book is primarily written for dominants who are seeking a slave, although it can equally be read by unowned slaves to gain a focus. (For the record, I am an owned slave and I found the manual to be a very interesting read, as did my Master.) It covers a number of areas that a dominant should consider when choosing a slave, such as: forms of address, general demeanour, the role the slave might fill, as well as things such as signs of ownership, punishment and reward.

In short, the message is: a slave is a dominant's most valuable possession, so think exactly what it is that you want and choose wisely, as the slave's role will reflect on the dominant. In addition, the manual also shows that a large amount of work is required on the part of the dominant to gain and retain a slave.

Miss Abernathy's Concise Slave Training Manual is non-gender specific and as such, can be beneficial to male or female dominants with male or female slaves. Miss Abernathy has done a lot of the hard work in essentially preparing a checklist of things to consider. The volume is slim but is packed with useful information. A valuable addition to any D/s library.

5 out of 5 stars Brief, solid introduction to a developing art.......2002-03-09

Contrary to what you may have heard or read, slave training is actually a new art -- when slavery was legal and socially supported, owners didn't waste tiem training slaves, other slaves did that. This book is really the philosophy part of a set of books written about erotica slavery, or what Miss Abernathy calls "slavehood" in today's so-called kinky community. The book has two parts: "The Training Program" and "D/S Relationships". The basic philosophy is that a training program contains basic standard components but also needs to reflect the individual needs of erotic owners and erotic slaves. Likewise relationships have certain common characteristic but are unique to the couple (or group) involved. It is one of the books I highly recommend.

3 out of 5 stars Concise Indeed.......2001-02-24

This book is in fact very well written and very concise. However, I was disappointed by it. I came to the book with questions about consensual slavery and the practice thereof that were not answered. Instead, I read a very short and very witty and warm overview of just about everything I already knew--maybe a little less, and I am not all that knowledgeable. Her workbook was more informative, and that is the one that I read first, which helped me form so many of my questions, but the format is not one which will directly answer the questions of an owner, since it is written mainly for the unowned slave.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to the next level of play.......2000-12-31

Just as the title suggests, this book is a concise guide on techniques and setting in which to train a slave. Once you have read and practiced the techniques in books such as SM 101 and Screw the Roses, this book is a fantastic collection of ideas for you to set up and negotiate your own S&M relationship. Written in two parts, first the book deals with the various techniques of training your slave - interviews, journals, forms of address, postures, commands, types of services and ornamentation. The book then deals with D/S relationships - what to look for in slaves/Masters, the ethical treatment of slaves and the different types of slave arrangements.

Written in elegant, gracious style which is reminiscent of Emily Post, the tone is very consistent the content of the book, making it even more effective and fun to read. This book is an excellent "mood setter" for two people to read together. Overall, this book is a engaging read and excellent addition to your BDSM library.

Book Description

"This is a novel in the guise of the  tape-recorded recollections of a black woman who has  lived 110 years, who has been both a slave and a  witness to the black militancy of the 1960's. In this  woman Ernest Gaines has created a legendary figure,  a woman equipped to stand beside William  Faulkner's Dilsey in The Sound And The  Fury." Miss Jane Pittman, like Dilsey, has  'endured,' has seen almost everything and foretold the  rest. Gaines' novel brings to mind other  great works The Odyssey for the way  his heroine's travels manage to summarize the  American history of her race, and Huckleberry  Finn for the clarity of her voice, for  her rare capacity to sort through the mess of years  and things to find the one true story in it all."  -- Geoffrey Wolff, Newsweek.

"Stunning. I know of no  black novel about the South  that excludes quite the same refreshing mix of wit  and wrath, imagination and indignation, misery and  poetry. And I can recall no more memorable female  character in Southern fiction since Lena of  Faulkner's Light In August than Miss  Jane Pittman." -- Josh Greenfeld,  Life

4 out of 5 stars Moving.......2007-05-12

This is the story of an incredible, 110 year old black woman, as told to a writer on tape. Jane, born Ticey, was born a slave on a Louisiana plantation and lived through slavery, with all of its cruelties, the Civil War, WW2 and the beginning of the civil rights movement. It's a fascinating glimpse into the lives of people born as slaves with no rights whatsoever, and follows them as they progressed through the following 100 years, learning to assert themselves, gain an education and aiming for better lives for themselves and their children. Some of the language was a little incomprehensible to me as a non American and I couldn't make out the meaning of a lot of phrases that local readers would understand immediately. I'll now try to find the movie on DVD to go with the book.

5 out of 5 stars Miss Jane Pittman.......2007-02-21

I read the Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman as an independent reading project for my English class this year, and I loved it. Although it was a little dry at times, it was a very thought-provoking book with a plot that made you want to keep reading. Although it is fictional, the author has a way of writing that will make you believe this story is a true autobiography. While reading, I could actually imagine being there with Jane, working by her side in the fields as a slave. It was almost as if I could feel the exact emotions she was feeling and all the pain that she was going through. Along with being entertaining, I also found this book to be educational. I learned so many things about the Civil War and slavery that I never knew before, but it was actually fun to read about. That's more than any text book can offer. My only warning for anybody who is planning on reading this book is that it's terribly sad in some parts. Some passages include a lot gory details, which I think are necessary to show what the characters are really going through, but others may find them to be a little excessive. In spite of that, I still ejoyed reading The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. My next step will be renting the movie. If that is anywhere near as good as the book, I'm in for a treat.

3 out of 5 stars Great if you like this sort of thing.......2007-01-06

This was a really interesting book, but it was a slow read and it wasn't very exciting to me. It was also very depressing. I did learn a lot from this book. For all you history and/or Civil War/Civil Rights fanatics, this is the book you need to read. For all you fantasy/adventure fans, you might want to read something else.

4 out of 5 stars Ahhh, such a classic.......2006-01-14

I have been a fan of the movie forever. It inspired me and moved me ever since i have been a little girl! it's soo funny that i have had this book forever and i finally finished it. miss jane has such an inspirational story. thsi is a classic that no one should miss! for the longest time, i thoght miss jane was a real woman who lived and walked this earth for real. but i realized as i got older that her story is the story of my ancestors and i feel even more inspired! a great read, don't miss it!

3 out of 5 stars Very Interesting but also very dry........2006-01-12

I sorta enjoyed the novel it was not really one of my favoorites but I was fascinated with the civil war era. The main thing I didnt like about this book was that it focused to much on the part of the united states where she lived Lousiana. But its definatly worth reading.
