Great Book But....................2004-03-24
This is probably the greatest book for flute playing that I have in possesion. I highly recommend this book to any serious flute student, high school or college level. I must say however that these sellers on here are cheating you out of buying this book. Currently the prices I see for this are ranging $180-$200. I bought my book brand new for $12.95 at a nice music store in Dallas. There is an older edition of the book but the only difference between the two is the front cover. No front cover is worth changing the price value of the book by over $100 worth. If you want this book buy it or order it from your local bookstore or music store or write to these idiotic sellers that think they know two cents about a book's worth. It's published in it's second edition by the National Flute Association and I promise it was only $12.95!
Worth a YEAR of serious lessons & applies to any instrument.......2003-05-13
John Krell has collected a concise volume of the teachings of William Kincaid, the father of american flute playing. Krell performed with Kincaid in the Philadelphia Orchestra flute section for many years. Here is a well designed 100 page MUSIC lesson from a master musician. Part 1 - Elements of Technique covers Diaphragm control, embouchure, tone, vibrato, articulation, finger technique, Part 2 - addresses phrasing and musicality, Part 3 - deals with Musical execution, rhythm, tempo breathing points dynamics, fake fingerings, etc. Part 4 - Final notes on repertoire with Appendixes covering tone production, practice routines and an interview with Kincaid from May 1960. An enlightening read with entertaining anecdotes. This book is a must for any professional musicians library. I am a percussionist by trade and a teacher. I have been able to use many elements contained in this book by merely substituting the word drum for flute. It is truly a timeless text with a vast amount of information for the serious student of music.

How to Play the Flute.......2007-09-18
only adequate. The book only offered the VERY basics - had expected it to at least go beyond basics into intermediate skills - - could have done it without the book! Lessons were extremely over-repetitive
Great Sound.......2007-08-31
I was very pleased with my purchase. Item arrived on time and in great condition and great sound!
Good book for the musical novice.......2007-06-02
This is a good book for someone with little or no prior musical experience, but for an experienced musician trying to learn a new instrument, it is a bit weak. Approximately 90% of the text is about really basic music theory (ie, how to count 4/4 time, how a whole note is notated, etc), and very little is devoted to technique particular to the instrument. Don't get me wrong, there is a fair bit of flute technique, but I find it frustrating to have to wade through pages and pages of rudimentary material to find it. The amount of material that is helpful to the beginning flautist can probably be compressed to 10 pages.
Disclaimer: I have only had a flute for 48 hours, and have read through the book only once. Perhaps I'll find more gems on the 2nd or 3rd read through...but I don't look forward to the re-reads.
Great resource!.......2007-05-14
This is a useful tool for my music study. Thanks!
The best........2007-04-19
I had always wanted to play the flute since I was forced to play clarinet throughout middle school band. Eventually, I purchased a flute and taught myself to play based on the instruction the flute players got in class. Years later, I decided I wanted to get back into playing music again and needed a refresher course on the flute.
I wish I had this book the first time I wanted to teach myself the flute! The book goes far beyond some simple tips, charts for where to put your fingers for each note, and songs to play. There is in depth advice on how to hold the instrument, how to breathe, how to achieve the best tone, when to use alternate fingerings, and much more! I am so impressed by this book. There are plenty of practice songs too and better songs than I've found in most of these kinds of books. I enjoy listening to myself play them! The best thing about the pieces is that most are designed to teach something (such as a new note, a new key signature, a new time, etc.) and since they are actually nice songs it's much more fun to practice and learn.
Even though I had previous musical experience and could already read music and knew a little about the flute, I think that I could have taught myself using this book. I used to have difficulty hitting higher notes too and this book had really helped me. The quality of my playing, especially my tone, has improved greatly and even though I can play much more advanced pieces now I still come back to this book to review and practice. This book would be a great resource for a new player in a band or music program or taking lessons as well as someone who is self-taught.
All teach yourself to play books should be like this one.

Book Description
Celtic Music for Flute by Jessica Walsh contains 44 tunes for flute which can be played solo or with a chord instrument. This great collection includes tunes from Scotland, Ireland, England, Wales, and the Isle of Man. The melodies were chosen from more than four hundred years of Celtic music. Most of the pieces have been extended with variations, which make the tunes a more suitable length for performances and are a lot of fun for the flutist to play.
In addition, they will introduce the beginner to the joys of improvising in Celtic music, in which ornamenting and augmenting melodies is a tradition. Every tune in the book is included on the digitally mastered CD. Though the tunes are very effective as solo material, Jessica chose to record most of them with guitarist Allan Alexander. Allan has rendered the chords artfully, and the result is a really lovely CD which is a pleasure to listen to.
For the player who is new to Celtic music, the recording will give insights into the melodies, and it will allow the flutist who has no access to a chord instrument to hear the harmonic progressions. For those who know and love these wonderful tunes, it will be a joy to hear them played by two musicians who obviously love to play this music together. The CD which comes with the book has all 44 of the tunes in the same order in which they appear in the book.
The CD will give you insights into the music, and it will be enjoyable to listen to on its own merit.
Contents: Follow My Highland Soldier, Blythe Was the Time, Carpenter's Morris, The Gentle Maiden, O as I Was Kissed Yestreen, Arrane ny Skeddan (Song of the Herring), Song of the Falcon Chief, Hush! songs that sound great and are easy to play.......2007-02-20
Title says it all - this book is full of songs that are fun and easy to play and they sound great - especially if you can find a guitar player, and maybe even a drummer for the full celtic music experience.
Most of the songs lay out a traditional theme followed by one or more variations added by the author. Based on celtic music performances I've heard, this - theme & variations - seems to be the traditional way of performing these songs.
The accompanying CD has better sound and performance quality than one often gets in this kind of thing.
The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is just a minor nitpick - I'd like to see at least a few songs scored for duets or trios with some instrumental variations, for example parts for guitar or alto flute (in G).
Great tunes.......2007-01-10
As far as the music goes...5 stars.
The cd is the only reason I gave this review 4 stars.
There isn't any lead-in time when songs play on the cd, so it is difficult to play along with Ms. Walsh in the first bar.
But that really doesn't take away from how much I am enjoying this book/audio cd.
Very nice.......2006-11-09
I'm a player of 10 years, and this was my first time playing Irish/Celtic music. The song selections are great and the accompanying CD brings them to life. I found the notation a little bland, but I added my own ornaments here and there and it sounded very nice. There are several songs on the CD that don't have any accompaniment (guitar), and that was a little bit of a bummer.
I definitely recommend!
Very fun.......2006-11-04
This set is a lot of fun to play, its nice to have the CD for reference. The music is very soothing.
Impressive!.......2006-03-03
Having played the flute for over fifteen years, I picked up this book to give myself a bit of variation and time away from the usual marches and movements. Immediately I was impressed by both the music selections included and the accompanying CD. The music is quite lovely, the melodies haunting, and the CD is fantastic in showcasing just how the songs should basically sound. Jessica Walsh does tend to slow down a few tunes, as a reviewer mentioned below, but regardless it is a nice compilation and worth the money.

Television cooking shows are occasionally moderately entertaining to watch, but as sources for usable recipes and good cooking ideas, they are hit or miss at best. Cookbooks based on cooking shows are even less likely to be useful in the kitchen. One shining exception is Julia Child's "Master Chef" series. One of the best cooking shows ever produced, it also yielded some wonderful cookbooks, including Cooking With Master Chefs. The latest is Baking With Julia, which features the creations of 26 top bakers. All are artists with flour, eggs, butter, and the other ingredients of their craft. Writer Dorie Greenspan is a master at her craft as well. The paste for eclairs, she writes, is transformed from "ordinary-looking batter" into "a puffed pastry that appears to be threatening flight." It's all definitely good enough to eat.
Book Description
Hands on baking with recipes and techniques that teach you how to make great breads, pies, cobblers, cookies, cakes, and pasties, both sweet and savory. A world-class course in baking for new and practiced bakers alike.
Baking with Julia is not only a book full of glorious recipes but also one that continues Julia's teaching tradition. Basic techniques come alive and are easily comprehensible in recipes that demonstrate the myriad ways of raising dough, glazing cakes, and decorating crusts. This is the resource you'll turn to again and again for all your baking needs.
Baking with Julia presents an extraordinary assemblage of talent, knowledge, and artistry from the new generation of bakers whose vision is so much a part of this book. The list of contributors reads like a Who's Who of today's master bakers: Flo Braker, Steve Sullivan, Marcel Desaulniers, Nick Malgieri, Alice Medrich, Nancy Silverton, Martha Stewart, and a host of bright new talents such as Jeffrey Alford and Naomi Duguid.
With nearly 200 recipes, and half as many pages of full-color photographs, this incomparable kitchen companion goes far beyond what most cookbooks offer. More than 50 pages of illustrated reference sections define terms and techniques, and explain the hows and whys of batters and doughs. If you've never made flaky pie crust, your first no-fail experience is at hand.
From chocolate to cheesecake, from miniature gems to multitiered masterpieces-this cookbook is a total immersion experience in the wonder of home baking.
Customer Reviews:
Baking Bible.......2007-09-16
I have had this book since it first came out. This is, by far, the baking bible for those of us who adore to bake on weekends. Recipes I continually come back to are the Vanilla Pound Cake, which I often make for neighbors at Christmas. And the unbelieveable blueberry muffins which are worth the price of the book!!! Boca Negra, the flourless chocolate cake is to die for, along with Sunny Side Up Apricot pastry. Enormous popovers which I still love to watch on the PBS show where Julia speaks of honey dripping down to her elbows.
Yes the receipes are sometimes time consuming---this is not a quick bake approach. Where else can you learn from the top pastry chefs and pay thousands for cooking school? The photos are increadible, the book has a nice size and receipes, while detailed, are easy to follow. Enjoy!
A classic........2007-06-08
With Dorie Greenspan's writing, Julia Child's inimitable personality shines through the well thought out recipes. You learn all the basics and how to build on them to achieve greater proficiency as a baker. It is a classic.
Absolutely my favorite baking book.......2007-03-24
The best part of this gem --besides the touch of Julia --is the variety. While many baking books specialize in one kind of baking [cakes, breads, sweets, breakfast, and so on], this book has a wide variety of truly excellent recipes in a wide variety of styles. Of course that makes sense, since it is a compilation of the best recipes of many accomplished bakers. Everything I have made from this book has been truly excellent, and has introduced me to worthwhile authors. I especially have enjoyed the flatbreads and associated recipes from Alford/Duguid; the savory italian egg-pepper-spinach-cheese-meat torte; the plum cakes; and the Italian "X" cookies.
Wonderful addition if you're a baker!.......2007-03-09
I just received my book recently and have already made several things from it. Yes, some recipes are a little time consuming but the results will knock your socks off--just follow the instructions exactly. I love to bake and this will be my baking Bible now. Wished there were more step-by-step photos but it still works for me. You have to be serious about baking in order to truly appreciate all the work involved in these recipes.
Normally my results NEVER look like what you see in the book or on her TV show but I have been ecstatic as everything has come out exactly like I've seen on Julia's wonderful TV series from which this book is based.
For best results, read the recipe thoroughly first...not just glance it over. Then write down all the ingredients you need and verify that you actually have them. Follow the recipe step-by-step and you will absolutely LOVE your results. I am so happy to have finally purchased this that I'm going to make something every weekend now.
It's such a nice, big, heavy book that will be a wonderful addition to your other cookbooks. Bon appetit!
A gift my daughter almost didn't get........2007-03-09
For the serious baker, your cookbook collection is really not complete without this reprint. Gorgeous illustration and wonderful recipes in Julia's own no-nonsense style.

Book Description
Teachers and flutists at all levels will welcome the return of Nancy Toff's unique one-stop guide to the flute and its music. Organized into four main parts--The Instrument, Performance, The Music, and Repertoire Catalog--the book begins with a description of the instrument and its making, offers information on choosing and caring for a flute, sketches a history of the flute, and discusses differences between members of the flute family. In the Performance section, readers learn about breathing, tone, vibrato, articulation, technique, style, performing, and recording. In the extensive analysis of flute literature that follows, Toff places individual pieces in historical context. The book ends with a comprehensive catalog of solo and chamber repertoire, and includes appendices with fingering charts as well as lists of current flute manufacturers, repair shops, sources for flute music and books, and flute clubs and related organizations worldwide.
Customer Reviews:
An ideal reference Book For Flute.......2006-12-20
The text is written in modern English which is easier to read and comprehend than some of those ancient scrolls translated from german or some other archaic language. In addition to the information of technique and method, I especially enjoyed the lengthy resource lists for rated (according to level of difficulty)musical compositions for flute.
The book is dictionary-like in terms of weight and feel. The pages are filled with well-written standard type font. I mention this because I have become weary of those pamphlet-thick 'modern music method books' and their clip-art laden, nearly empty pages that are too often mass produced and marketed as an only source of published information.
The author also addresses, in great detail, some of the well and lesser known flute debates(such as the flutest/flautist conflict), the history of flute (with photos from the Dayton C. Miller flute museum/collection, where the author is also the currator), development and changes, and those other topics and issues some(those only superficially dedicated to the wonders of flute) might consider trivial.
I originally borrowed this book from the library. I have since added this title as a must have for my personal music book collection. If you are looking for a recently written, detailed, modern exploration of the flute, by an accomplished authority, this publication is a smart choice!
Great pictures of different flutes inside.......2003-09-04
I borrowed this book from the library. I love the pictures of different flutes of different era. You can see how flute evolved through hundreds of years. Truly amazing.
Comprehensive, useful, necessary.......2002-01-18
Nancy Toff has left nothing out of this grand book -- the history, anatomy, selection, and care of the flute in its popular and more esoteric forms; an extensive discussion on the development of not only classical and modern technique, but also personal style; building a repertoire and creating or finding performance opportunities; the history of flute music, and authoritative suggestions for building a sheet and recorded music library; countless charts and reference materials -- all has been included that a flute player, whether amateur or professional, student or teacher, could and would want to know and reference in the course of their playing career. And if one happens to find anything not included, I feel confident that Ms. Toff would personally see to correcting the matter immediately. An absolute must; look no further, oh wearied flutists (as Ms. Toff insists you are to be called, and not flautists, based on a well-researched etymological conclusion), for your redemption is at hand.
Great Reference tool.......2000-08-26
Nancy Toff does an exceptional job with this complete and well-rounded reference book for books. Any information that one could hope for about playing the instrument, buying the instrument, or listening to the instrument is included. The author also does well to give many perspectives on many flute issues, reasoning them out for the reader. The second half of the book on the history of many composers is exhaustive and complete. The catalog of repertoire pieces in a table format with available publishers is invaluable for any performer. Really a must own.
This is really cool!.......2000-05-31
I find this book absolutely helpful but I just want to say that what a pity that only paperback is available. It would be nice to have hardback version..
