Book Description

In his Minnesota Twins career, Kent Hrbek hit 293 home runs and helped his team to two World Series titles. But fans remember the hulking first baseman for much more than his solid play. Hrbek is a Twin Cities lifer, starring at Kennedy High School in nearby Bloomington, Minnesota before signing with the Twins. In fourteen major-league seasons, the only uniform Hrbek wore was the Twins. And since his retirement in 1994, Hrbek has remained visible in the Twin cities, whether assisting charity functions or hosting his locally broadcast outdoors show. In Kent Hrbeks Tales from the Twins Dugout, the fan favorite looks back at his playing career in Minnesota. Many stories revolve around the championship seasons of 1987 and 1991. Hrbek also shares his memories of the late Kirby Puckett, the star of those championship teams. He tells of his close friendshipand the sudden end of that relationshipwith third baseman Gary Gaetti. Kent Hrbeks Tales from the Twins Dugout is a humorous, insightful, and at times heartbreaking story of one of the most memorable eras in team history, from one of Minnesotas very own.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book by an even Better Guy.......2007-07-28

I really enjoyed this book for a couple of reasons. First, Kent Hrbek is a really likable guy who isn't out to impress anyone. He is a truly genuine individual, which is admirable and refreshing. He is also very interesting. No, this book isn't written on a graduate level, but who cares? It's about baseball, a team full of good guys, and one fun loving guy in particular. I read this book right before I read the book written by John Schuerholz. Wow, talk about opposites. The "genius" Schuerholz has no clue about things like the Hrbek charm.

5 out of 5 stars Kent Hrbek... A Credit to the Integrity of Baseball.......2007-06-14

As a Minnesota Twins fan for some forty years, this may be perceived as a somewhat biased view...but I truly don't believe it is. Most of those who follow the game closely, and appreciate its significance on the national psyche for more than a century, will respect this straight-arrow summary--of Kent Hrbek's team, in particular; but, even more importantly, for the significance and integrity of the game in general. Though an unsung hero in terms of individual awards, he was, in the eyes of many objective baseball observers, as good as any--and better than most--first basemen to play the game. And he was an excellent clutch hitter (e.g., his grand slam homerun in the sixth game of the 1987 World Series) who knew the strike zone, and rarely swung at a bad pitch. But, as he emphasizes in his book, his two World Series rings, and the undying support of true baseball fans in the upper Midwest, and throughout the country, totally overshadow the fact that he was, inexplicably, overlooked for the individual honors which, in the view of many, he so richly deserved. He and others refer to his approach to the game as that of a throwback...the type of player from the game's glory days. This is arguably as high a tribute as can be given a player. And, because these qualities are, sadly, in short supply in today's go-for-the-money atmosphere, Kent Hrbek--nearly thirteen years after his early retirement--is still missed by those who love the game... for the game. And for all of those, "Kent Hrbek's Tales from the Minnesota Twins Dugout" is highly recommended. --Ron Howe / Erskine, Minnesota

5 out of 5 stars Hrbek keeps you hooked and entertained.......2007-06-14

After reading 'Tales', I felt like I had actually been in the dugout with the Twins. The book keeps moving, doesn't well on any point too long and provides just the right amount of detail. Hrbek and Brackin have delivered a baseball classic.

Hrbek's antics and honesty come through as genuine. He seems like a guy were he your neighbor you could just walk up to and have a nice, casual conversation. His views on baseball provide insight for the fan from the other side of the stadium fence. I remember watching him as a kid whenever the Twins came to Seattle, and he was always an impressive player. We ran into Hrbek on the street in downtown Seattle one day and he lived-up to his friendly guy image in person too.

I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it for anyone with an interest in baseball or the Minnesota Twins in particular.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read for Minnesota Twins Fans!!!.......2007-05-28

This book was a great, quick read of antecdotes from Hrbek's career as a Twin. He reveals a lot of suprising off-the-field information that baseball players rarely reveal in career retrospectives. If you were a Twins fan in the glory year runs of 1987 and 1991, you have to check this out.

3 out of 5 stars Not Enough.......2007-07-19

This book had some good stories and was a quick read, but to barely mention Mike Piazza doesn't make any sense. He was the face of the franchise and led them to the subway series in 2000. The book mentions him in passing and basically notes that he wasn't a good fielder. Strawberry is hardly mentioned as well. It makes no sense.

4 out of 5 stars A Banner Day Read.......2005-04-02

Tales from the Mets Dugout understands the history and hysteria that come with being a Mets fan. The book has some nice but not overused photos and it packs a lot of information in less than 200 pages. Living in the shadow of the monolithic Yankees, Mets fans know they have ruled the city for just a handful of seasons over the last 43. While the next 1969 or 1986 seems a lifetime in the coming, Mets fans can at least embrace a team that's seen more excitement than some franchises have experienced in a century of play. The Mets have never had a no-hitter, but look at the pitchers who came up through the system and tossed them with other teams: David Cone, Dwight Gooden, Mike Scott, Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan . . . The Mets drew 700,000 people in 1979, and eight years later were the first New York team to draw 3,000,000 . . . the Mets have won three NL pennants but only one Met has been Championship Series MVP. Obsessing over the Mets for a lifetime, I thought there was nothing I didn't know about the club, but Bruce Markusen came up with new stories and new angles, including several trades that never happened: the Mets almost traded Jerry Koosman for Fred Patek, Tommie Agee almost went to the Red Sox (instead of the Mets) in a deal for Carl Yastrzemski, and the Mets could've had Dickie Thon for Elliott Maddox, but owner Linda de Roulet thought the Angels' top-notch prospect had too much of a baby face! Perhaps the most shocking nugget of all unearthed by Markusen was a telegram from the president of the Yankees congratulating the '69 Mets. The man even said he was rooting for the Mets. Now that's amazin'. The book's pretty good, too.

Book Description

In "Tales from the Angels' Dugout", take a look at the lighter side of 41 years of frustration and then re-live the excitement of 2002, when the Angels finally got the monkey off their backs. Author Steve Bisheff reminds us of those colorful days with The Cowboy, Gene Autry and the struggles under the ownership of Walt Disney Co., as well as the curses, hexes and tragedies that haunted the Angels for so long. Bisheff contrasts zany personalities such as Bo Belinsky, Dean Chance, Albie Pearson and Reggie Jackson with the remarkable, but non-superstar bunch that finally won the World Series, including The Gamer, The Pest, The Pure Hitter and The Phenom. Finally, what Angels book would be complete without the Rally Monkey, a mascot that took on a life of its own. "Tales from the Angels' Dugout" is just what Angels' fans have been waiting for to capture on paper the long road culminating into a world championship.

THIS IS A BOOK ABOUT THE EARLY HISTORY AND THE CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON OF 2002 CONCERNING THE ANAHEIM ANGELS. THE AUTHOR DOES A GREAT JOB DESCRIBING THE EARLY YEARS WITH EMPHASIS ON THE TRAGIC AND DISAPPOINTING EVENTS THIS FRANCHISE HAS ENDURED. FROM THE PLAYOFF LOSES IN 1979, 1982 AND 1986, THIS TEAM HAS ALSO BEEN SNAKE BITTEN WITH THE DEATHS OF LYMAN BOSTOCK AND DONNIE MOORE. AS THE HEALTH OF OWNER GENE AUTRY DETERIORATED, THE TEAM IMPROVED. HE DIED BEFORE HE SAW THE ANGELS WIN THEIR 1ST WORLD SERIES. THE BOOK ALSO COVERS THE ANGELS 2002 SEASON IN DETAIL AND ALSO FOCUSES ON THE MANY PLAYERS WHO HELPED MAKE IT HAPPEN. I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR ALL ANGELS AND BASEBALL FANS.

4 out of 5 stars Brings the story of the Angels up to date........2004-10-28

Although it is not as well organized a book as Ross Newhan's earlier book, this volume brings the story of this often overlooked and tragically plagued franchise up to date, including the magical 2002 World Championship season. Steve Bisheff does bring in stories about the earlier Angels, whom I remember fondly, although he concentrates on the contemporary stars. Both Newhan's and Bisheff's books should be read in conjunction if you want a good picture of the adventures of this team, of whom I have been a fan since its beginning. GO ANGELS!!!

It took something truly remarkable to save the 1981 Major League Baseball season from being remembered only as the year of the players? strike. It took the Los Angeles Dodgers: Fernandomania and ?Sorda and Garv and Bake and the Penguin. It took three amazing October comebacks to beat the Houston Astros, the Montreal Expos and, finally, the New York Yankees, avenging Dodger World Series losses to the Yankees in 1977 and 1978. Rick Monday was right in the middle of that magical Dodger season. His recollections and conversations with teammates provide a behind-the-scenes view of one of the most amazing teams and seasons in baseball history in Rick Monday's Tales from the Dodgers Dugout.

    Book Description

To the baseball fans of today, the name 'Dodgers' is synonymous with Hollywood, the warm California sun, and names like Tommy Lasorda, Kirk Gibson, Steve Garvey, and Orel Hershiser. The Dodgers mean much more than that to the fans of baseball history, however. Namely, these fans remember the famed "Boys of Summer." otherwise known as the Brooklyn Dodgers, a team that included some of the most storied players in baseball history. The group included Hall of Famers Duke Snider, Roy Campanella, Gil Hodges, Pee Wee Reese, and Jackie Robinson. Although they eventually moved out West, the Brooklyn Dodgers provided some of the greatest moments the game has ever seen and some of the greatest personalities to ever take the field. Carl Erskine, another member of that legendary team, relates memories about his days with the Dodgers in a book full of true stories and revealing anecdotes. The result is the second edition of "Carl Erskine's Tales from the Dodger Dugout, a delightfully interesting trip through the world of baseball in the 1950s that includes several new stories added for this edition. Among Erskine's many tales are his dealings with immortal team official Branch Rickey, his view from the Dodgers' bench during Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series, and his first-hand experiences when Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier and became the first black player in Major League Baseball history. During his frequent speaking engagements, people often ask Erskine if all of his stories are true. His standard response has been, "Yes, I couldn't possibly make them up the way they actually happened." Now fans can read all of those great true stories in "Carl Erskine's Tales from theDodger Dugout: Second Edition.

    4 out of 5 stars A delightful look at Brooklyn's Golden Years.......2003-08-04

As someone who never knew Ebbets Field, but heard plenty about the Brooklyn Dodgers and Carl Erskine, this book is a treasure. Erskine anchored the Brooklyn Dodgers during the glory years in the late 1940s and 1950s. This was not only a golden era for the Dodgers, but a golden era for baseball as well, when names like Mickey Mantle, Stan Musial and Jackie Robinson were not just faces on bubblegum cards, they were idols.

Erskine's book is a collection of memories. While they jump around in time, they are all fascinating and light hearted. Erskine does not go into long explanations about his philosophy of pitching or his view of baseball then versus baseball now, still his opinions and beliefs are easily ascertained.

Probably the most enjoyable part of this book is that Erskine doesn't believe that baseball owes him something. He understands the magical moment in history that he lived in. He has also preserved some colorful history that would otherwise be lost because many of the ballplayers he mentions have passed away. He has created not only a fun baseball read, but a valuable document for those in the future who will wonder, "What was it like when the Dodgers were in Brooklyn..."

The only criticism that I have of this book (and it is a minor one, to be sure) is that the stories were just meandering. Sometimes a story took place ten years after he played, followed by a story of Erskine in the minors. At other times, Erskine went over ground he'd already covered. While this is not a big deal, it, at times, slowed the pace of the book down. However, this is more the fault of the editor than the fault of Erskine.

If you liked Roger Khan's "The Boys of Summer" then this book is like going back for a sequel. This book is gracious, funny, and makes you appreciate what a special time the 1940s and '50s were in baseball and in America.

5 out of 5 stars It was a fun read........2000-10-31

Carl Erskine's short stories of baseball in the early '50's refreshed my memories of growing up in Upstate New York. I remember vividly the cross-town rivalries of the Dodgers and the Yankees. I remember the World Series of 1956 when Don Larson pitched his masterpiece against the Dodgers. It is refreshing to read about those experiences, and to read about the background of the game itself.

Carl was always willing to show friendship with his competitive peers outside the `white lines', and willingly received Jackie Robinson's contributions to the game. It was fun to read about how the communities and families got involved in the early years of baseball on the professional level. Carl's attitude outside the competitive realm was always acceptable in anyone's home or community.

Because I am not an avid reader, the way in which Carl formatted his book is interesting and fun to sit down and read. As a avid baseball fan and former coach, I appreciated Carl's sharing of his personal and professional experiences.

I have a great deal of respect for a personable professional like Carl Erskine.

5 out of 5 stars Light Reading for Everyone.......2000-10-15

A book doesn't have to be heavy reading to merit five stars. I was a kid just getting interested in baseball during the glory years of "The Boys of Summer." Near the back of the book Carl says, "It's fun to look back at days and events that have long since past." That's the feeling I had while reading this book. However, this book would be for anyone including children with short attention spans since the book is a series of short anecdotes about his years with the Brooklyn Dodgers. I finished it in two sittings. I came across a number of familiar stories, but also a number I've never heard before even though I've read many books on the Brooklyn Dodgers. I did find a mistake on P.156 where Carl states that lights were first used in Cincinnati and Brooklyn in 1946. Lights were first used in Cincy in 1935 and in Bklyn. in 1938 with Vandermeer's second no-hitter. Nevertheless, if you want a quick read about these great years told my a player who deeply appreciates being part of that team, pick up a copy of this book. This would also be a good introductory book on this team for a child as well. I've read hundreds of baseball books and I enjoyed it.

The book is a delight. It's written for the average person, who may or may not be a baseball fan. There's not a lot of boring statistics. It's a look at the players and one particular remarkable coach. It made me laugh out loud, brought tears to my eyes and sometimes both at the same time. The book takes a look at the real people who have played inside the Seattle Mariners uniforms. Give it a chance just like we've given the Mariners a chance.

If baseball from a fan's perspective is the answer to a lazy summer day, then Tales from the Dugout is the answer to lazy days the rest of the year. Pick it up and open to any page and you'll find the delightful yarns, quotes, foibles, and folklore that wrap the grand old game like so much twine around the innards of a baseball. Bobby Brown, Yankee third baseman of yore, explains why teammate Yogi Berra had such an unconventional strike zone; an unassuming North Carolina pitcher named Jimmy Hunter reveals the truth behind his nickname, "Catfish"; and major-league prankster Ken Griffey Jr., in a rare turn of the tables, plays the April Fool. With more than 150 anecdotes from America's national pastime, this memorable collection is the perfect antidote to rainouts and winter blues.

    Book Description

Batter up--here comes the most memorable collection of anecdotes about the national pastime ever assembled. Tales from the Dugout brings together never-before-told stories from baseball personalities such as Roger Maris, Ken Griffey Jr., Pete Rose, Phil Rizzuto, and Gaylord Perry in this illustrated, one-of-a-kind compendium.

    1 out of 5 stars NOT.......2007-09-10

Not the greatest baseball stories, not even good baseball stories. The only funny story about this book is I ordered it twice by accident(by the way I didn't like it either time)

5 out of 5 stars Grand Slam! Amazing Book.......2006-01-09

Tales from the Dugout is a great book. The book has tons of great short stories about the game of baseball. Furthermore, the stories are about former and current players, managers, owners, fans, teams, announcers, and the list could go on. Additionally, the stories range from hilarious to respectful. This makes the book stay exciting throughout its entirety. The variety really adds a lot to the book.
I would really recommend this book if you are a baseball fan or just like a good reading. Tales from the Dugout uses such a great variety of well known people and not well known people. This quality makes sure that you are learning about new people and learning more about players you came to love years ago. Personally, I am devoted baseball fan and love anything about baseball. This book tops all the books I have about baseball. It is truly a great book.
The author, Mike Shannon, displays a great knowledge and understanding of baseball and writing. Shannon writes the stories in a way that pulls you in once you start reading. It is really amazing. When I was reading the book, it felt like I was talking to Shannon in person. Additionally, Shannon picked "The Greatest True Baseball Stories Ever Told." Every single story in Tales from the Dugout leaves with a great last word and makes you want to see what how the next short story will end up.
If you love the game of baseball and like reading about baseball, this book is perfect for you.

4 out of 5 stars If You Like Baseball History, Read This Book.......2004-10-30

This book is about a number of people and things. Some people that it's about are Pete Rose and Ken Griffey Jr. There are broadcasters in the book, one is Joe Nuxhall. There are many other people in the book, too.
Some things that I liked about the book was, there was a collection of short stories. It also had some pictures. There weren't pictures about everything they talked about. If you didn't like one story, it wasn't so bad because the whole book wasn't about that. You could keep going with the book.
Somethings I didn't like was, it had some stories that didn't make sense. Those stories were around five pages long. Other than that I liked the book pretty well.

2 out of 5 stars Could have been much better.......2004-04-02

Shannon's research is great, and his love of the sport comes through, but simply put the stories included aren't anything special. Anyone who has grown up listening to and loving our national pastime has certainly heard many stories much better than the ones here.

Shannon explains that his intent was not to repeat old anecdotes, but to write a book full of new ones. It's a noble goal, but unfortunately it results in a collection of mediocre and mostly uninteresting stories.

3 out of 5 stars Nice Book, But Nothing Revolutionary.......2004-03-22

The easiest way to write a book is to have other people tell the story while you write it down and take credit. This is not meant to discredit the author, Mike Shannon. However, as a lifelong baseball fan, I already heard many of these stories. In many cases, I enjoyed reading these stories from the original source or a witness. Additionally, many of the stories chosen for the book are just not interesting.

If you like the Yankees, you will like the book. There are plenty of Yankee stories in here. If you hate the Yankees, this will make this a less than pleasurable read. I particulary enjoyed reading the Marge Schott stories. The exploits of the late Reds owner are always good for a laugh. Many of the stories seem to be about miserly owners. I particularly enjoyed reading about Bobby Thigpen's attempts at using poetry to get a raise. While many of the stories are informative, they aren't very entertaining. I was hoping to read more "inside the game stories."

To the casual fan or even big baseball fans, many of these stories are old news. I believe that this book is more geared toward younger readers who are learning about the game. This is probably a book most baseball fans can live without.

5 out of 5 stars Nice Collection of Stories.......2004-07-08

This book is written by a man who has covered the Giants professionally for over 40 years and he's done a nice job of compiling stories and anecdotes about the team since its move to San Francisco in 1958. There are stories from the 1960s through the 1990s, detailing the Giants' successes and failures, their post season history and how close they've come to winning it all, only to have it end in frustration. There are stories about Candlestick, truly one of the most miserable places to endure watching a Giants' game, and also stories about the team's great stars: Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Orlando Cepeda, Juan Marichal, Gaylord Perry, and yes Barry Bonds. Stories abound too about the Giants-Dodgers rivalry, including the 1962 playoffs and the infamous Juan Marichal- John Roseboro incident.

This book is a fast and enjoyable read, one any Giants fan will love.

4 out of 5 stars Giants book done right.......2004-06-22

Ever since Bonds hit 73, the shelves have been littered with hastily-written garbage taking advantage of the Bonds phenomenon. This isn't one of them. An engaging, lively read, the author brings you right into the dugout. Wonderful!

    5 out of 5 stars A RICH HISTORY.......2004-05-12

The Giants have given their fans many thrills, and this book describes some of the most nostalgic of their days.

5 out of 5 stars Hits the sweet spot........2007-09-24

I actually bought 2 books. My son is 10 and he reads everying evening.
He reads out loud to me and I follow along in my book. We discuss every chapter (short). The book is well written. Any child that likes baseball will certainly enjoy all the baseball talk. And the way life's lessons are presented are so much better than I could try to explain to my son. He understands them. We are now referring back to the book in conversation. I can say remember what the book said about curve balls?
Sometimes life will throw you a curve ball. It is all in how you handle the situation. We have not finished the book yet, but when we do I will keep them handy and have my son refer back to certain chapters when life
can be sticky. I look forward every evening to sit down and read this book with him. I think it is awesome.

5 out of 5 stars keep body and soul together.......2007-09-23

First off...I dearly love the game of baseball, have since I was 5 years old. Mr. Rotbart has shown me why the game has rooted itself to my inner core. These days, I've had to step back and look at the game from another view. I am a District Administrator for Little League Baseball in Arizona and oversee 18 leagues. After reading this book I purchased enough copies for the presidents of each league (plus some) in the hopes that these directors of our young athletes will do the same with their constituents. Nothing worthwhile in life is just handed to us, we must practice over and over so we are ready when it's our turn to make the right play or decision in our lives. This book teaches us as adults, as well as our children, how perfect practice makes perfect!

5 out of 5 stars This books hits a homerun!.......2007-07-26

As parents, one of our goals is to teach our children how best to interact with their increasingly complex and sometimes unfriendly world. This book serves as a primer to both parent and child, using baseball rules as the platform. In its simplicity, it is an elegant guide to making our children better adults, and making us better parents. I loved Dr. Rotbart's book, and only hope to see more of his profound wisdom in future books. How I wish he could have been my parent! Thanks for educating me to the rules of baseball and life, all in one concise volume.

5 out of 5 stars Grandma in the bleachers!.......2007-06-21

I discovered the perfect gift for a grandmother to give her baseball-playing grandkids. I don't know anything about bats or gloves, and I can't figure out any of the other paraphernalia my grandsons use when I watch their games. Until now, the best I could do was giving them a gift certificate to a sporting goods store. But, "The On Deck Circle of Life - 101 Lessons from the Dugout" is better than any gift certificate. If I made a list of everything I'd like my grandsons to grow up to become, the list would include most of the chapters of this book. I bought a copy of the book for myself, too - because the top half of every chapter is a little lesson in the game of baseball and helps me understand what the kids are doing out there. The bottom half of each chapter teaches kids how the game relates to the real world, so there's something in each chapter for grandparents, parents, and kids. I really like this part of Chapter 81, the "Home Field Advantage":

"As life challenges and confuses you, take comfort in, and take advantage of, your home field. Your parents and your brothers and sisters are your best friends, your most important teammates...No matter how bad the crisis, how afraid you feel, or how terrible you imagine the outcome, your family is your ultimate home field advantage. Find the comfort and stability of your familiar dugout and the friendly faces on the bleachers. You'll win many more games at home than on the road."

    5 out of 5 stars Great Gift!.......2007-06-18

Books of baseball wisdom aren't unique - but this book is one-of-a-kind. Nowhere else can parents find so many important life lessons camouflaged in a language that kids love and speak fluently, the language of baseball. My kids read some chapters 5 or 6 times each because they thought it was "so cool" the way leading off from first base or tagging up had hidden meanings. This was the easiest way ever for my kids to fill 180 pages of their independent reading lists.
