A much appreciated gift for 8 mo. old baby. "He loves his 'If You're Happy and You Know It' book already!", Mom wrote in her thank you note sent with a very happy baby picture!

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-05-29

My son is 18 months old and loves this book, as well as the others in this series. He loves the pictures! I love the fact that I can either read or sing the book to him.

4 out of 5 stars Very cute illustrations.......2007-01-19

My daughter likes this book. She loves the song, so this works for her. However, I don't particularly care for the made-up new verses.

5 out of 5 stars fun for babies.......2003-02-12

My baby loved this book from 3 months on. She loves when we sing the suggested verses to her and really relates to the watercolour illustrations of the other babies inside.

Book Description

A bright, energetic retelling of a beloved children's rhyme, with a Pacific Northwest twist."There was an old lady who swallowed a troutThat splished and splashed and thrashed about."Everyone has heard about the old lady who swallowed a fly, but there is something particularly fishy about this old lady . . .Beautiful illustrations in this story capture the scenery and wildlife of the Pacific Northwest. The buoyant text jumps along as the old lady swallows a salmon, an otter, a seal, a walrus, and more, until eventually she swallows the entire sea and the trout swims free! With a unique and fascinating setting, this pure flight of fancy gives a fresh look to a familiar poem.

3 out of 5 stars Variation of There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Spider.......2006-11-12

This Old Lady swallows everything in the ocean from a trout to the ocean itself. In the end she pukes out the ocean with such a commotion.

The rhymes are okay. The pictures are vivid and busy. I like the attempt to recreate this old story with a new tune but (and I know the real story of the old lady swallowing a spider and dying at the end from swallowing a horse is morbid) I still prefer the original.

5 out of 5 stars The old lady, Northwest-style.......2004-10-14

Just about every pre-schooler knows the story and song, "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly;" here's a colorful aquatic version of that story, about an old lady who swallowed in rhymed sequence (among other things) a trout, a salmon, an otter, a porpoise ("she did it on purpose, she swallowed a porpoise!"), a whale, and at last the whole ocean.

Kids will love this twist on their traditional favorite; they'll love the vibrant and exuberantly colored illustrations even more. (You've really got to use the "look inside the book" feature above to get a sense of how wonderfully this book is designed.)

In contrast to the original old lady, who swallowed a horse and then quickly died (!), our intrepid trout-swallower eventually lets her menagerie back out to swim another day. A happy book with a happy ending; highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars We LOVE this book.......2002-11-05

I am a Nursery School Teacher's Aid, and I pick out the books and
read the my classes- I work with three year olds- We LOVE this book, we loved I knew an Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly- but this one is equally as good.

I can't wait to read the Old lady who Swallowed a Pie!

Enjoy-

5 out of 5 stars there was an old lady who swallowed a trout!.......2002-03-03

What a fun book!! My preschoolers love it. The illustrations are both colorful and beautiful and certainly depict the Pacific Northwest. It's such a great participation book, all the children love to join in and never tire of it.

4 out of 5 stars The Pacific Northwest does wonders for this old rhyme!.......2000-06-29

I'm not a big fan of the song/rhyme "There Was an Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly", but I do like this quirky book. The old woman is now an old lady, and she no longer swallows flies, cats, and dogs. Instead, she swallows, trout, salmon, otters, and other animals indigenous to the Pacific Northwest. She no longer dies, either--although she does become dangerously large after swallowing the ocean. This book is a lot of fun. The change of venue does wonders for the old rhyme, and Reynold Ruffins' colorful, folk-artsy illustrations are a pleasure. Sure, it's a cross-cultural gimmick, but it works. My two-year-old and I love singing this book together.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Cultural Treasury.......2007-02-11

In my center we work with many immigrants, especially Spanish speaking immgrants. All of our bilingual staff of parent educators love this book. We are responsible to help these families get their children ready for kindergarten entrance and one of the requirements now is the child has to be able to recite nursery rhymes. Of course the children have no idea what Humpty Dumpty or London Bridge is talking about. So this puts them at a disadvantage. We encourage parents to share these rhymes with their children, which are the rhymes most of the parents grew up with. Nursery rhymes and finger plays, along with the lullabies of childhood become the first forms of wider world language comprehension in the child's brain. They develop sensitivity to sounds of language, variations in those sounds, similarities and differences, build receptive vocabulary. This book with its delightful translations can help both the parent and the child transition from native Spanish language to the target language English, all the while retaining the first culture for both parent and child. Since we all must learn by hanging what we want to know on what we already know, this book is a tool in forming an effective bridge for Spanish speaking families. Some English speaking families are using it also to teach Spanish to their children. I wish there were books like this 14 other languages! Do we know anyone who could write one in Arabic or Mandarin Chinese?

4 out of 5 stars Adorable Little Book.......2006-05-25

I thought I'd check this out from my local library before purchasing it. There are different sections involving games, finger plays, sayings, nursery rhymes, etc....What you usually get in a book of this type. The illustrations are what make this book interesting. Many bilingual books have really cheap and uninteresting pictures in them. I have several Spanish bilingual children's books and the same stuff is pretty much in all of them. I prefer Jose Luis Orozco as you can get a cd to go with every book. He's a really folksy singer so be prepared. He is the "real deal" though. My little girl likes the cds by Las Gatitas and Cri-Cri also. If you're interested, Pio Peep and Los Pollitos Dicen may be books your little ones would like.

3 out of 5 stars Mama Goose: A Latino Nursery Treasury.......2005-09-15

I think it is a nice book, however I was disappointed. The title says " A Latino Nursery Treasury", the truth is that the content is 95% based on Mexican folklore. I wish the content included rymes and other pieces from other countries in Latin America: Argentina, Colombia, Venezuela, Cuba, etc...

Most of the content is not knwon from people outside of Mexico.

4 out of 5 stars A fun collection..........2005-04-20

Acclaimed authors Alma Flor Ada and F. Isabel Campoy have combined their talents to present a collection of sayings, nursery rhymes, games, and more. MAMA GOOSE: A Latino Nursery Treasury expounds on heritage and how various cultures have contributed to what is now considered Latino tradition or folklore.

My favorite portions of the book were the jump rope songs, proverbs, and birthday songs. Remembering my childhood, I was able to revisit some of my favorite songs and compare them to the ones presented in MAMA GOOSE. What I really enjoyed was that the book was written in both Spanish and English, allowing everyone, regardless of background, to appreciate the selections. I enjoyed being a kid again, reading, singing, and playing with the characters of this book. My daughter also loved listening and giving her own renditions of the colorful illustrations drawn by Maribel Suarez. MAMA GOOSE is a wonderful selection I'd recommend adding to any child's library as it's sure to be one of their favorites.

5 out of 5 stars The Song of Mu Lan.......2000-07-25

In the US, most people came to the legend of Mu Lan via or following the Disney version, which was, for a change, amazingly close to the source material. In China, this story is as well known as George Washington and his cherry tree is in America. I was quite taken with the Disney movie, and went looking for books of the story. Many books later, in both English and Chinese, I have come to regard this version as the best of all. The translation is excellent, the drawings nothing short of captivating. My children, now four to fourteen, all enjoy hearing me read this book aloud, and I have not grown tired of reading it. There are many small true things in this book which may not be readily striking to the casual Western reader, but to those who have studied or lived in China, the story makes a great deal of sense, both in the details and in the broad message of the story.. I can't heap enough praise on this book. It is perfect in every way, all the details are just right.

4 out of 5 stars My favorite version of the Mu Lan legend.......1998-07-11

The illustrations are beautiful! This is an authentic presentation of the ancient folk ballad of Mu Lan. The translation adheres closely to the original Chinese text. This is simultaneously the great merit and the great fault of this translation, since the original text is allusive and elliptical in its phrasing. For example, the ancient text appears to have several speakers, but it is not always clear who is speaking at any moment. Because of this, the English translation is at times unclear. The imagery of Jeanne Lim's lean interpretation of this poem is nevertheless powerful and rich, comparable to Han Frankel's translation of this poem, and quite a relief from the excesses of Arthur Waley. I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars Mulan , beautiful warrior princess.......1998-04-20

The story of Mu Lan is the chinese woman warrier fairy tale that describes a young girl that is capable and courageous. Her father has no elder son, so she disguises herself as a boy and joins up when they call her father's name. The original fairy tale poem is reproduced in poetry, both in chinese and english. The calligraphy is artfully done and the story rings genuine. The words are faithfully reproduced to convey the original meaning. It is a book you can display on your coffee table or read over and over to your children. The beautiful illustrations are done in watercolor on silk and are lush and expressive. Because of her service to the emperor, she is rewarded. But she only asked to go home after 10 years of valor. They welcome her like a lost child and hold a feast in her honor where she surprises family and comrades alike with her real identity. This is a wonderful book to teach girls that they can be anything they want and not lose their identity. And it is humerous when she reveals herself. The chinese proverb at the end states that when two rabbits run together, no one can tell which is male or female. The original text was written in AD 420-589, and it can be considered one of the first statements of female independence in a society that is proud of sons over daughters. I know it gave me and my daughters pride to be Chinese women and the sense that we can be both beautiful and strong. The book is a good teaching tool but it can also be enjoyed purely for the artwork and calligraphy. I would recommend this book highly to all girls everywhere and the action and surprise will surely delight young boys as well. It is no wonder that Disney chose this book.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing-this tale shows what the human spirit can do!.......1998-04-12

Mu Lan, will intrigue boys and girls alike. Her mission to provide safety and refuge for others, does not come without a price. She faces alot of misundersood culture barriers-what one expects from a daughter or a son! This book has some thing for everyone, with a powerful message to all, about what the human spirit can accomplish. Disney is making this story into a movie in June of this year! It's message will effect all!

My 16 month old daughter loves this book! This was one of the first books she was interested in and has yet to tire of it. In fact, I am replacing her copy because it has been taped together too many times to repair again.

I used this book with my preschool class. I brought in a toy spider to go along with it. I sang the song as I read it with the children in a circle. Then I put the spider on the children and the part of the body the spider was on. This was a fun book to do.

4 out of 5 stars A new spin on an old song.......2006-11-04

When my daughter picked this book up at the local library, I wondered if it was just a song book. She was into the whole teapot craze, wanting to have tea parties, singing the tea pot song, etc. What I found when we got it home, however, was a delightful surprise.

The many verses in this song take children through many different cultures on a great exploration. From China to Mexico to outer space! After checking the book out numerous times from the library, I decided to go ahead and buy it. As we'd drive along in the car during the day, I'd hear my two year-old reciting the lines to the book. At night, she would study the book from page to page trying to find the alien, who had surprise appearances throughout the book. When she sat alone, I'd watch her identify boys and girls by the color of their clothes, by the way the wore their hair, by the place she thought they might be from.

This is a very creative book with fantastic illustrations that pull you in with its lyrical flow and excellent rhyme. What a great way to broaden a child's horizons!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for the imagination and more!!!.......2006-05-09

Both my daughter (4) and son (2) absolutely love this book. We usually sing it from start to finish and the illustations have little details which you can use as conversation points. My daughter now invents her own adventures for the teapot to add to the numerous ones in the book. The music for this is on the back page which you can either play or sing. Both my children run their fingers over the notes and sing "la la la" as they go. Great for developing an early interest in reading music!

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Illustrated and Fun to Read (or Sing!).......2006-01-23

We own 4 Iza Trapani books, and this is my favorite (the other books are The Itsy Bitsy Spider, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and Baa Baa Black Sheep, my other favorite). All of these books are just beautifully done. Ms. Trapani takes favorite nursery rhymes and turns them into entertaining stories that just beg to be sung (she even puts the music on the last page in case you don't know the tune). Her exceptional drawings really add to the fun. My 5-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter absolutely adore these books and they are short enough that I don't mind reading them every night (only Twinkle Twinkle sort of wears me out singing it). I'm a Little Teapot takes readers all over the world on an imaginative adventure, then ends up back at home among family and friends. It's a beautiful, fun-to-sing story.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful for toddlers.......2005-09-24

My 2 year old takes this book to bed with her every nap/night and I hear her singing at the top of her lungs along with the book (we've read it to her many times too). It is her absolute favorite book and has provided hours of entertainment.

A great buy for the toddler set!!

4 out of 5 stars Good, not great.......2005-04-27

Judging from most of the reviews here, you'd think that this was the greatest board book ever. Well, it's certainly good, with (mostly) above-average artwork and an interestingly creative idea, but the text itself is subpar--in particular, the rhymes don't scan very well, to the point of making it difficult to read aloud in places.

That said, it's a decent book, and definitely worth considering for the price. However, you shouldn't get it thinking you're getting the world's greatest book for small children ever.

Book Description

A favorite childhood song brought to life by one of America's favorite illustrators.

"If you go down to the woods today
You're sure of a big surprise.
If you go down to the woods today
You'd better go in disguise;
For ev'ry Bear that ever there was
Will gather there for certain, because
Today's the day the Teddy Bears
Have their picnic."

The Teddy Bears' Picnic has been sung and loved by English speaking children throughout the world ever since it was written. The intrigue conjured up by the teddy bears picnicking independently of their owners continues to capture the imaginations of children everywhere.

Michael Hague's illustrations are simultaneously panoramic and detailed. Against the backdrop of country landscapes, lovable teddies of all shapes and descriptions picnic and play.

Now, the authors of the book and the song offer this wonderful and whimsical take on the "grown up" message of the book. I Hope You Dance for children is witty and fun, warm and fuzzy, wild and fanciful. For the kid in your life, here's the opportunity to say:

I hope you dance!
Stir it up, baby, make a splash
do the shag and the monster mash
the cotton eyed joe and the hokey pokey
if you ain't got rhythm that's okey dokey
don't lay in the tub and bubble bath soaka
get your shimmy on the floor and do the zydeco polka

The message of the book is complemented by remarkable, delightful illustration and design by the award winning team of Buddy Jackson and Karinne Caulkins, which created the graphics for the adult version of I Hope You Dance.

Absolutely delightful. The kids can't help squeeling with glee over the characters. Every page is a delicious surprise that dances with color and sprightly munchkins. The words are rhymy, rythmic, and full of fun. It has an inspirational tone that goes down easily. The kids will read it with you over and over.
