Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description
Invisible Acts of Power is an exploration into the nature of generosity, compassion, and the acts of service we do for each other and those that have come our way.
Caroline Myss explains how, as we move from visible acts, such as caring for a friend, to invisible acts, such as prayer and healing, we act divinely - without desire for credit or reward. She chronicles the many ways you can create small yet profound miracles, gain a greater sense of spirituality, and transform your own life and others' in an instant.
Customer Reviews:
Transformative Generosity.......2006-09-19
Caroline Myss presents beautiful stories of gratitude and giving to explain how meaningful kindness can be in the life of those in need. She not only addresses financial aspects of giving, but the invisible aspects where you can encourage friends, family and even strangers you only meet once to reach for the best they can be in this lifetime.
Why do some people practice generosity as a "spiritual practice?"
What is the most appreciated type of generosity?
How can you break through fears to awaken your own generosity?
What do people regret the most?
Why do we fear giving to those less fortunate than ourselves?
How can you build someone's self-esteem by giving invisible gifts from the heart?
Why is listening an act of generosity?
Caroline Myss has profound insight into life's many complexities and in Invisible Acts of Power she explores the positive results of emotional, creative, supportive and risk generosity. She now builds additional layers on our understanding of the charkas, although you can enjoy this CD set without knowing detailed information about energetic fields (the interactive charka model at her myss site is very helpful).
What is most interesting about the ideas is how they were inspired by real-life situations and letters sent in by people connected to her website through her newsletter. This opens up a world of experience in which giving takes on practical dimensions.
I can also highly recommend:
Self Esteem: Your Fundamental Power Audio CD Set

It feels as if I have come full circle with Caroline Myss' teachings since I was first introduced to her wisdom through a generous friend. The CD sets make wonderful life-changing gifts that will inspire spiritual growth and moments of deep contemplation. If you are interested in using your power for good, then this essential CD set will inspire you in profound ways.

Customer Reviews:
Another Biblical fasting book..........2004-08-21
This must be a profound book for Christians seeking guidance on fasting. For the rest of us, it has much less practical application than many wonderful books Amazon has on fasting- books that walk you step by step through the process and show you very carefully how to end a fast, along with who should and who should not fast. I would recommend other choices for those who want more practical information.
Informative and To the Point.......2004-08-03
This book is a real blessing in that Dave Williams gets to the heart of why fasting is important, not only for physical cleansing, but to be brought into a closer relationship with God. Enabling us to receive His blessings.
I will reread this book (this time with a highlighter). And I am purchasing several copies for friends.
It is a quick read and strongly recommend this book to those Christians seeking a deeper relationship with God.
Slightly above average.......2004-07-05
I wish this book had more on the spiritual benefits of fasting. No I,m not talking about giving me more quotes from an error ridden bible rewritten a myriad of times that nobody knows what is true in it.(See pre and post 325AD Council of Nicea and Constantine's control of what was put in the bible) I wanted more concrete stories of what happened to others during fasts. If you don't know fasting will clean up your body there is no hope for you. I believe that if Williams included more concrete info on fasting, physiology, biochemistry, and its spiritual connections and not so much on bible verses he would have a better book. Extremely short book.
A fasting book for the faint-of-heart!.......2003-02-10
This book made fasting so much easier as it reminded me of the enormous benefits of denying the self and resisting the urge to eat. Fasting brings the heart closer to all that is important and most of all, it clears our bodies of toxins and our spirits of toxins as well. A useful, practical, and inspirational book that is worth every penny!
A Powerful, Versatile Little Book.......2001-08-22
In his book Jesus Our Intercessor, Charles Capps teaches key doctrine in an easy to understand style that unlocks GOD'S power in our life. Jesus Our Intercessor references many Bible passages making this book a complete Bible study as well as an enlightening book. Charles Capps also pricks the heart of our conscience by explaining why Jesus needs our prayers as much as we need Him as an intercessor.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if there were enough people on this planet desirous of taking care of it that we could be in a mutually beneficial relationship with planet earth and even undo our water pollution? She can lead the way!

Customer Reviews:
People teens admire talk about God.......2007-04-13
Author Amy Hammond Hagberg wanted to help teens--her own and others--answer questions about God, including the big question: "How do you know he's real?"
Hagberg wrote to sports stars, recording artists and other celebrities, asking them to reflect on their life experiences and share how the reality of God was making a difference to them personally and professionally. The responses she received--from NBA players, Christian musicians, 'American Idol' contestants and others--are honest, revealing, and often compelling.
The resulting book is a collection of celebrity essays: mini-bios that focus on the reality of God in the midst of media attention, success and failure, and broken relationships. Contributors include Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic basketball team, quarterback David Carr of the Houston Texans, and popular Christian recording artist Clay Crosse.
Some of the interviews are especially helpful for Hagberg's original target readers: teens. Among these, Chrissy Conway of 'Zoe Girl' talks about her parents' divorce, the party scene, and the twists and turns along her personal career path in ways that connect with teens and with anyone who has ever considered attempting a career in music.
Hagberg is a gifted and skilled writer who keeps readers turning the pages as she unpacks celebrity affirmations of the presence of God in their lives. A great gift book for readers from teens through Gen X, but the stories here will interest readers of any age!
Note: Reviewer Dr. David Frisbie is an author and Executive Director of The Center for Marriage & Family Studies in Del Mar, California.
Armchair Interviews says: Anything that can help teens understand their role in living a good life is good.
Celebrities share their faith.......2007-03-11
This is an ideal book to give to people who have questions about becoming a Christian, and who love sports and music celebrities.
44 extreme sports and music celebrities tell their stories in this book, from Jonny Lang (recording artist), to Barlow Girl (rock group), Kimiko Soldati (Olympic diving), CJ Hobgood (surfer), Dwight Howard (NBA player, Orlando Magic), Mick Hannah (downhill mountain bike racer), Jimmie McGuire (professional motocross rider) and more.
They share hard times they faced, how they became Christians and how their paths are more joyful due to their faith. Being a Green Bay Packer fan I turned to Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila's story of growing up in South Central Los Angeles with a tough background, a Muslim dad and a Christian mom, and how his becoming a Christian led to his current happy family life and NFL career. Christian Hosoi, professional skateboarder, after serious drug problems, is now leading a skateboarding ministry.
The two page "God's Road Map" at the end of each celebrity's story contains perceptive questions and Scriptures. Sports and music lovers will enjoy this book, and it can even be a "past watchful dragons book" that will steer doubting people on a new clear path.
god unplugged.......2007-02-02
God Unplugged by Ammy Hagberg was very interesting. It is 403 pages long and was published in 2006 by Destiny Image. In the story top athletes, musicians, and also stars tell how god helped them get where they wanted to be and changed their lives.
In the story there were 44 celebrity reflections on true life experiences with god. Many of these celebrities have been extremely low in their lives and god has pulled them out of them. Also in some cases they have had no luck in there lives and finally achieved their goals after they gave there lives god. All of these people believe that god has either given them opportunities or even the strength to work through where they were to get to where they want to be.
I thought that this was a good book. I enjoyed reading it and seeing how god has changed all of these people's lives. The strengths of this book are that it has top named celebrities that people actually want to read about. The weakness of this book is that there is nothing to find out nest so you don't have a reason to keep reading. I did like how god actually gave them the strength to continue and succeed in life. The writing was very boring to me, but I liked the idea.
The book gave a lasting effect on me because I have a saint Christopher necklace that my grandma gave to me before she passed away and that keeps me safe when I race motorcross. So, I think that god has a great power on us. I would recommend this book, it will make you think.
After reading this, you certainly KNOW he is real!.......2007-01-25
Truly, this, and the book before this, are really awesome books!
** Why?
Because they give some very good insights into other peoples way to God. Not only that, if you don't know the Bible inside and out (and even if you do, actually!), there are quotations from the Bible explaining the why and hows, depending on the story of the person interviewed.
All this, with Amy Hagbergs very nice way of writing (down to earth serious mixed with a nice blend of humor) makes this book a pleasure to read!
Personally, I strongly recommend this book to everyone. It might be those who Seek, or those who have found, it doesn't matter, in my opinion! :)
Fantastic book!.......2007-01-24
What a great book! Amy Hagberg has gathered some of today's biggest sports and music celebs to talk about how they know God is real. This book is in stark contrast to so many of today's depressing, tragedy-focused headlines. And the list of celebrities is impressive! [...]

Book Description
Twice chosen for People magazine's "The 50 Most Beautiful People in the World" feature, and widely hailed as the most captivating actress on daytime television, Hunter Tylo may seem untouchable, a star out of our orbit. Nothing, as she reveals in this candid autobiography, could be further from the truth. This is the story of a down-to-earth woman -- mother, wife, and friend -- whose grace and class in the face of extraordinary challenges are an inspiration. Meet the real Hunter Tylo and get to know a remarkable person.
As Dr. Taylor Hayes, the sexy psychiatrist of CBS's The Bold and the Beautiful -- seen by 350 million daily viewers worldwide -- Hunter brings to life a complex character whose "compassion can sometimes turn to passion, " as the actress describes her; it is this quality that exemplifies Hunter's life as well: she has emerged as a woman whose understated strength turns obstacles into triumphs.
Here at last, Hunter tells the complete story of her successful court battle against the producers of Melrose Place, who had fired her before she appeared in a single episode because she became pregnant.
But Hunter's motherhood odyssey has taken dramatic twists more heart-wrenching than any television drama. For the first time, Hunter tells the story of her infant daughter Katya's rare eye cancer -- and how her deeply rooted Christian faith has seen her through the ordeal.
With honesty and without pretension, Hunter Tylo also takes chances in Making A Miracle -- by revealing much that her millions of fans do not yet know, including a personal crisis that left her to make a choice no woman should have to make. Reading these candid revelations, you may come to see Hunter Tylo in a new light -- and perhaps understand more of who she is and what forces motivate her every day.
Beyond the glamour of stardom and celebrity, Making A Miracle is a story about motherhood; for Hunter Tylo, it is the role of a lifetime.

She is NUTZZZ.......2005-12-21
Boy do I feel differently about this actress after reading this book! I gave it a 4 because it reads in a Jerry Springer sort of way where you can't turn the channel, or in this case the page, because you can't believe what you are seeing/reading! First of all, she abandons her kids REGULARLY throughout her life (I don't care what her great excuses were), the one son is near suicide (umm, ya think?!), and don't even get me started on her journey to and affair in a foreign land (hubby should have kicked her to the curb for good then and there!). Finally, the childish way she spins tales about another actress was in my opinion defamation of character and in poor taste. I don't care what reborn crap she is trying to pull now, she is a mess and has put herself first her entire life. Doesn't her TERRIBLE new face and lips scream "LOOK AT ME!!!" We're looking alright and running the other way!!!
If you're a fan of hers, GET IT.......2004-05-20
I've seen Hunter Tylo on Days of our Lives and the Bold and the Beautful (describes her perfectly) and I can attest that she can act. I remember when this book came out and there was a lot of press about it because she really left no stone unturned. I finally got around to getting a copy last week. I haven't been able to put the thing down. I have 50 pages left. It's all in here: the domestic violence, the Spelling case, her dabbling in the Hindu religion. Through all these obstacles, Mrs. Tylo has come out the other end stronger and her family on more solid ground. God bless her for having the you know whats to write about it all because it all comes out.
Facinating Read.......2003-04-15
The book starts with her leaving B&B in 1996, after she found a role with "Melrose Place". A few weeks later she learned she was pregnant, and out of courtesy told the execs at Melrose the news. Soon she found herself without a job, she was fired from Melrose because she was pregnant. She had enough issues getting the role, with her newfound Christianity she was concerned about the role she would be playing, in which they gave very few details and were evasive with their answers to her questions. We don't find out what happens as a result of her termination until later in the book, near the end.
She goes back to her childhood, to her first marriage where she was pregnant with her first son, Chris, and the tumultuous relationship she had with his father. Doing many commercials, she eventually found an acting job at "All My Children", where she met her future husband, Michael Tylo. At this point in the book we are introduced to their relationship, and it is a bumpy rollercoaster ride. She kicks him out, they fight over work, she gets him arrested, he tries to take her kids away from her, it was a constant battle. He lost his job at AMC after she did, and then she found work on "Days of Our Lives", being fired shortly after, then finding work at B&B.
She accounts her friendship with co-star at B&B, Kimberlin Brown, and the problems that happened there. Lots of history there. Then Hunter landed a role in a mini series shot in India and Canada, her marriage with Michael failing, she fell in love with a man over there who had her succumb to false religion, and she was manipulated. Her marriage at its final thread, more constant fighting, and it seemed everything in her life had gone down the toilet so to speak. Then she found her faith in religion again, and talks about how it saved her marriage. Then the Melrose fiasco.
The court case lasted an incredibly long time, and Spelling Enterprizes used every dirty tactic to make her look like a spoiled brat who was after their money. She was ashamed for a moment for considering having an abortion. I found this part of the book facinating, although disturbing that as she put it, they didn't want to admit that her child existed, not before, certainly not then either. She won the case, and during describing the trial, we learn of a shocking secret she had held within her for a long time, which I won't spoil here.
She got her job back at B&B and had two other children. Her first daughter, who she was pregnant with during the Melrose fiasco, Bella, and then she was pregnant again during the trial with Kayta. It turns out Kayta had a rare eye cancer disease, and Hunter talks candidly about her chemotherapy and the heartbreak she went through during this time, when she questioned her faith, and was left confused.
Overall a facinating read about Hunter's triumphs and tribulations in life, it's a shame she's not at B&B anymore, she really brought morality and class to that show that is now lacking on the show.
God is good.......2002-11-08
I have just read Hunters book. It is honest and from her heart. Hunter shares her testimony, of how sin and life outside of God's love and ways brings only destruction to ourselves and those we love. It is a blessing to read how Jesus steps in to save and restore lives and souls. You can see God's hand upon their lives. She shares with us that there is a lot of healing and relearning to do, when we find God, for learning God's ways when you have been taught by the world is a long and sometimes painful and ongoing process. I thank Jesus for what He has done and is doing, in their lives, she has shared with us personal details and the miracles that God has done in her life. I believe that what she shared about her experiences with hinduism to be true, Hunter does not say in her book that she researched or did a thesis on Hinduism, rather she shares with us her own personal experiences, she shares that she could not find happiness in sex, money, and religion, that God showed her that salvation comes through His Son Jesus, and it is the blood of Jesus that cleanses us from our sin. Many false religions do still sacrifice and see the blood as important in placating their gods, bringing healings and incurring blessing, it does happen, and Hunter saw this first hand. The hindues do worship many gods, Hunter shares with us what God showed her, that He is the only true God, and He does not come under the names of the false gods. God also tells us not to bring their images into our homes, for a curse will follow if we do, and she experienced what God said would happen first hand. Her writing style, her acting, her mistakes now are not the most important part of what she has shared, it was couragous of her to share so much with us, her honesty, trials and finding the true God. What is important is that Jesus, has stepped into her life, saving her and her husband restoring their family. It is a good book. Also when a person does find God and the truth, it is hard to explain to those whom do not believe in God, about miracles etc. and it is couragous of her to be so open about her experiences with God. Her book is not about research, Hunter has shared what she has gone through, and is still learning to understand, and from my own relationship with God, there is a lot of changes and relearning to do. So I am not going to stand in judgement of Hunter and say what would she know, as I see her experiences are real. I do not find Hunters book relgious for as a christian I love God, and am not ashamed to tell people, and Hunter clearly loves God, and wants to share how His love and mercy helped her and her family. I see her book helping others, a testimony of God's reality and love, and the reality of the destruction of sin in a life without God. For it is a wonderful story that she has shared with us, to see her family and marriage restored is the best news to hear and read about.
Thought provoking.......2002-05-22
I loved this candid account of Hunter Tylo's struggles, harsh realities and sincere honesty. This is a must read for anyone interested in a person triumphing over adversity. Walk with this incredible woman as she goes through the fire to come out on the other side. Hunter Tylo is truely a woman of integrity. God Bless her life.

Miracle: A Celebration of New Life.......2007-08-23
most incredible....Wonderful photography....I gave this as a gift to my expecting daughter...WE have loved wandering thru the book and enjoying the memories a mother and daughter make along life's path, some day her daughter will have the same experience..... WE LOVE IT !!
She calls this a miracle?.......2007-08-16
Some old fart blows his beans up her muff and the end result is a 'miracle'? Give me a break. If that's a miracle, so is taking a dump...which is pretty much equivalent to the entire recorded output of this overmarketed, overrated, so-full-of-herself commercial twit.
What a precious book!! And beautiful music........2007-02-22
This book and CD are so soothing. I LOVE to look at this book cover to cover. I think it's the most beautiful thing ever. I pop in the CD and look at this book and I'm so filled with awe on the miracle of life. These babies touch your heart, and are captured so beautifully in this book.
Anne and Celine have given me such a gift!!!
Great for new mothers.......2007-01-03
I received this book as a gift about 1 month after the birth of my first child. I loved it! I was so amazed with babies and how perfect they are when they are born. This book uses newborn babies in the most beautiful photos. You can look at the photos and appreciate what a miracle little babies are, especially if you have just given birth to one. The music CD has many songs that I sing to my baby when he is going to sleep. Many of the songs are remakes of classics, some are her originals. Again, as a new mom, I appreciate the words of these songs and they capture how much love I feel for my new little peanut!
Only God can create life.......2006-08-06
This book is truly a celebration of life. If you read this book and still think that allowing abortions on demand is okay, then your heart has grown too hard. dls

Be healed!.......2004-05-18
Kathy Black, a United Methodist minister on faculty at Claremont School of Theology, has had experience working with peoples with disabilities in both school and pastoral settings. According to Black, there are over 43 million persons with disabilities in the United States (and many more further afield in the world) who are affected by the interpretations and preaching of miracle and healing stories. How are these people addressed, as part of the congregations? How are the stories that talk about Jesus' healings to be taken by those who are blind or deaf or lame, who hear of such persons like themselves being cured, and yet when they leave the worship service, their disability is still with them?
Healings have often been seen as a sign of the miraculous power of God. By healings, most people and theological interpretations have meant cures, physical and incarnate cures. There are those in the world who have played and preyed upon the desires for such cures; responsible theologians and pastors often speak with a sense of honest unease in dealing with questions such as 'why didn't God cure me?'
Black looks at the healing narratives in the biblical text as being forms of liberation. At the same time, these same stories seem to reinforce the physical oppression to those with disabilities today. Both conservative and liberal camps fall short here. Those healed in the biblical texts are often portrayed as means to an end, rather than as persons with their own needs and histories in and of themselves.
In the first part of the text, Black looks at theological perspectives on disability and God's relationship and responsibility - is this a punishment of some sort (of the person, or the person's family or community)? Is it some sort of curse, or test, or an opportunity? Black develops a theology of interdependence, a very communal-oriented theology, that looks for the work of inclusion in an accepting and supportive community, clearly identifying that disabilities do not come from God's intentional action for suffering. Secondly, Black looks at hermeneutical approaches, drawing a spectrum from literalism to metaphorical interpretations, locating most mainline preachers in the middle somewhere, not always a constant location for any particular preacher over time. She examines the different ways medical and disability issues are perceived from the time of the biblical text to today's society.
The second major part of the text looks at specific disabilities - blindness, deafness, paralysis (lameness), leprosy (and other chronic illnesses), and mental illness. For each disability, a chapter is devoted with gospel texts, hermeneutic approaches, traditional homiletics and proposed healing approaches. Most of Black's texts come from the book of Mark, but there are representative passages from John and Luke as well. The persons with disabilities in these sections are described in modern terms rather than ancient terms. The 'traditional' hermeneutics and homiletics are actually from the past century or so (rather than looking too far back such as to the Reformation).
Black does make a statement about her use of the term 'persons with disabilities' (which is continued in this review). While she affirms the use and development of other terms (physically challenged, differently abled, etc.), she uses the phrase persons with disabilities because it is readily understood in societal and legal contexts (ADA - Americans with Disabilities Act). This is also the term she uses for herself, placing the emphasis variably on the word 'person' and 'with', never permitting the disability to be primary.
While each chapter is interesting, perhaps the most intriguing chapter for me was the one on mental illness. Sometimes in the biblical text, healing is done in the form of casting out demons. Most of us today would recognise persons exhibiting such symptoms as occur in the scripture as mental illness in need of medication, psychological therapy or both, but not an exorcism. She uses the story of the man from Gerasa (Luke 8) and likens it to the story of a young epileptic, exploring the ways we look both at mental illnesses in the modern world as well as the particulars in the text. Like the modern world, where many of the mentally ill are also homeless, this man in Luke living in the country of the Gerasenes is also homeless, living among the tombs. Black looks at different aspects of the text - analysis of the imagery in the story (water, 'unclean' elements, etc.); socio-political connections between the man's illness and the politics of the time; Black then works through the passage verse by verse, exposing different possibilities. After examining the more typical ways preachers address this passage, she proposes her own healing homiletic: the elimination of irrational fears, the acceptance of those different from ourselves and the need to reach out to others.
As Black states in a footnote to the introduction, there are various healing liturgies inspired by feminist theologies to help women get through various events that are in need of healing - divorce, miscarriage, menopause, etc. - that are gradually being incorporated and expanded into mainstream denominational life. However, the preaching has to address the healing issues properly or all the liturgical work can be easily undone. Black states in the final chapter that while cures almost always imply healing, healing does not always imply a cure. Sensitivity to those disabled can include a shift of language (stating that we do not understand something, rather than saying we are blind to something), drawing attention to the people in the texts, both the individuals and the onlookers as persons, and looking at the actions beyond the healing/curing that takes place.
The only drawback of the text (and it is a minor one) is that there is no index and no bibliography for research or further reading. As an aid to preaching and understanding the healing stories, however, this is a rare text.

Book Description
It's Safe Area Gorazde meets This is...Spinal Tap as cartoon journalist Joe Sacco takes on Rock 'n' Roll.
The Gaza strip? No problem! Deepest Serbia? A cakewalk. Those were easy. But now the time has come to follow award-winning cartoon journalist Joe Sacco on one of the most dangerous beats (and we mean "beats" literally) of all... namely the world of rock 'n' roll.
The centerpiece of the book is "In the Company of Long Hair," the early '90s graphic novelette Sacco created on the subject of his raucous European tour with the punk band the Miracle Workers. Although already published in other Sacco collections, "Long Hair" appears here for the first time in an expanded version with an added 15-page section of his original sketches and notes, and a bound-in CD featuring songs from the Miracle Workers' live shows of the timeincluding a blasting version of the Iggy Pop classic "I Got a Right."
As for the rest of the book: In a series of hilarious and sharply observed vignettes, Sacco turns his pitiless pen on all strata of Rock 'n' Roll, from old rockers ("The Stones and Me," a diehard fan's lament, and its sequel, "Suffering for the Stones") to new (the abovementioned Miracle Workers); from salacious gossip ("Who's Sleeping With Who") to how-to ("Woodstock in your Own Home"), from portraits of typical rock creatures ("Record Producer," "The Musician Who Wanted to Save the World," "The Rock Journalist") to self-deprecating autobiographical stories ("Why I Let my Hair Grow" and "So You Want to Meet a Rock 'n' Roll Star.") None of these have been collected before, and several, done for German magazines and papers while Sacco was living in Berlin, have actually never been published at all in English and are being translated for this edition!
The book is rounded off with some more recent, serious works such as "The Rude Blues," a full-color strip about Mississippi bluesmen done for Details magazine in 1999, and a piece about Lightnin' Hopkins done in 2005 for the Oxford American...as well as a treasure trove of rock posters, record and CD covers, T-shirt designs, and other "assorted rubbish" from Sacco's European years, all wryly annotated by the author.

not your first sacco..........2007-01-06
Joe Sacco mentioned that there's no such thing as a sacco completist but here i am, i'm a sacco completist and i'm proud of it. i'm just one book away from collecting all his books. This book is really funny the art is great and the additional stuff added like the tour sketches and the CD is very very lovely. I just don't recommend this to be your first Sacco book to read as it might give u the wrong impression about his work. i loved palestine and its one of my favorite books and i just got safe area gorazde and i know i'll love it. What is really good about this book really that it shows u some of the personal things about sacco the artist and sacco the person. How he suffered to reach what he has reached now. How he tried to do stuff with his art, not to focus much on the rock n roll industry though his opinions are quite interesting. He's got a great sense of humour i cracked up on several occasion whilst reading. Great work sacco, looking for more from you.
Steal this book.......2006-11-05
I loved both "Palestine" and "Safe Area: Gorazde," but this compilation is a bit of a mess. You'll find a better and funnier snapshot of grunge-era rock and roll in Peter Bagge's "Hate" series.
Joe Sacco: B Sides & Outtakes.......2006-10-24
I'll be the first to admit that I'm eventually going to contradict myself at least once if not several more times in this review, but I both love and loathe this semi-offerring, if you will. I whole-heartedly admit to being what the author calls a "Sacco-completist," the type of person this book is specifically designed to cater to, but that didn't stop me from devouring it in one sitting, either. What I really enjoyed about But I Like It is Sacco's self-deprecating, sometimes morbid sense of humor yet sharp, sarcastic eye for the incongruities in life, which were on display much more so than in any of his previous offerrings. This type of collection could only be published when an author's popularity has reached a point where fans (like me, mind you) will salivate at the prospect of anything new and even vaguely Sacco-related - sort of like one of his one-page comics, The Record Collector. The inherent irony of the music industry Sacco portrays and his status as an artist in his own right is almost too much, however, it just may be my favorite thing about this book. The show posters are cool (I guess), the one-page pieces are great (no, really)...but seriously, Joe...sketches???

Review: How Do You Know He's Real?.......2007-06-14
In the book, How Do You Know He's Real, you'll get an inside look into the spiritual lives of 34 celebrities. Hagberg has compiled testimonies ranging from Kirk Cameron to Rudy Sarzo (former bass player for Ozzy Osbourne). Each story is remarkably different and it's amazing to read how God has worked in the lives of each of these well-known people.
Celebrities Share Their Christian Faith.......2007-05-31
The author has collected very readable stories telling how celebrities have become Christians, and they share their low points and their joys here. This is a welcome peek into the lives of well known people who typically are more secretive.
Ricky Skaggs, Kirk Cameron, Gloria Gaynor, Bethel Johnson (34 people in all) tell about their struggles and their early days as new Christians.
Billy Ray Cyrus tells of singing in his grandpa's Pentecostal church when he was 4, and includes the touching lyrics to the song he wrote "The other side."
Jackie (Jacklyn) Zeman, star of General Hospital, advises that when you are at a crossroads "cry out to God and ask for His guidance."
Al Kasha's story resonated with me; this Academy Award winning songwriter overcame agoraphobia, and talks about how Hollywood is a tough place for a Jew who came to Christ, and how he started a Hollywood Bible study group.
There are stories here for anyone to enjoy and find spirit lifting.
Celebrities talk about God in their life.......2007-04-27
(Hagberg has written a companion book with the same title, subtitled God Unplugged)
How Do You Know He's Real? is a collection of celebrity essays about God acting in their lives. The contributors include athletes, musicians, and actors. Their stories often follow a familiar pattern of fame leading to drugs and alcohol before hitting bottom and being turned around by an encounter with God. That's not to say the accounts are all stock and cliched, but rather that God meets each person in their need--and for celebrities that need will be similar. And many of the tales include growing up in stable Christian homes, but still needing to make personal decisions about God and Christ and how that decision impacted their careers.
The stories are collected alphabetically but Hagberg has provided a topic finder so a reader battling discouragement or frustration can find offerings from Billy Ray Cyrus, Nancy Stafford, Zorro, Gary Burghoff or John Schneider.
Each essay begins with a picture and short biography of the contributor, listing their accomplishments. Following the selection is God's Road Map, a few sentences about the issues raised by the author, with Bible verses for teaching and encouragement.
The essays themselves are as varied as the contributors. Some of them read as if they were written to be given as speeches. Several sound like the writer could be sitting at your kitchen table, chatting over the coffee pot. All of them are honest and share from their heart how God has acted in their life and how they know He's real.
Reading the accounts of God acting in both miraculous and mundane ways reminds us that no matter what a person does for a living, each of us are created beings who need a loving Savior and merciful God.
Armchair Interviews says: Up close and personal stories from celebrities.
COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN!!! Terrific Read!.......2006-05-18
I received this book as a gift and once I started, I couldn't put it down. Ms Hagberg has captured the beliefs of these well known and respected celebrities, sports figures, and musicians. I'm anxiously awaiting the next book in the series and can't wait to give copies of this one to all my friends. Order 2!
The book of a lifetime!.......2006-04-18
This is a book that you will no doubt want to share with everyone you know! (I certainly am!) It was so hard to put the book down - but worth it - just to extend the time and joy of reading it! GREAT content! GREAT author! I can't wait to read the next books in the series!
