Complete vocal score to the Scottish Opera 1989 edition.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best of all possible scores.......2006-05-03

As the rather pithy description of this "Candide" score states, this is complete vocal score according to the 1989 Scottish Opera performance, conducted by Leonard Bernstein. There have been alterations made to the original lyrics, and anyone familiar with the 1956 Broadway production will notice that "The Best of All Possible Worlds" is no longer about marriage, but is now deals with multiple topics of absurdity (and, as this is my review, I feel as though I can say I like the updated version more). The new lyrics are thanks to a slew of folks, including Stephen Sondheim and Bernstein himself.

The score has been beautifully set by Boosey and Hawkes and includes a page detailing the different character's vocal ranges. The publisher also lists possible doublings of chorus members and differentiates between singing and non-singing roles. A breakdown of the orchestration follows (it's a fairly large pit, too). As is standard with show music, the score contains a piano reduction of the orchestration. There are no instrumental cues (the only flaw, in my opinion). Several appendices are included which include an alternate musical number, and the running order of several different productions of the show.

This is just my opinion, but I say buy it before it goes out of print.

5 out of 5 stars West Side Vocal Score.......2007-09-18

If you want to play/arrange/orchestrate or simply see the genius of Berstein, this is the way to go. As an arranger, I needed reference to orchestrate a West Side Story Medley for a show, and I'm not talking your regular "standard" tunes. This vocal score is also a piano reduction of the orchestrations and was aboslutely what I needed. You can see nearly every instrument line, counter melody, even instrument indications. This was the best $50.00 I may have every spent. Saved me hours and hours of trying to "lift" off the lines. They were all there, even for the dance sections from Cool & The Rumble, which is what I really needed. Don't hestitate if you're looking for the real Berstein stuff!

4 out of 5 stars For the intermediate.......2006-12-28

The book is medium-it isn't an easy book you only play once and then you're bored, but it isn't very difficult. Some of the arrangements are needlessly crazy, but some are well done. A piano player of about 3-5 years is about the right level.

5 out of 5 stars Great transcription of the full score.......2006-04-21

If you're looking for a faithful translation from the full score, this is the one. This score is based on Bernstein latest revision as reflected in the Carreras Te Kanawa recording (1985).

But be warned, this score is only for upper-intermediate/advanced pianist, classically trained. It's not a fakebook, it's not a simplified/reduced piano score for casual use. The arrangement gives two alternatives for playing some part of the song, and you can choose to play it the hard way or the easier way (which is still rather difficult). The hard way is of course the most faithful to the orchestral score.

For example, the dance part in "America" can be played by using single notes of the left hands rather than using full chord, which is great if you're trying to cope with the tempo. The arrangement for the slow pieces such as "one hand one heart", "maria", "tonight", and "somewhere" is really beautiful.

Tip: Listen to the "west side story" conducted by Bernstein himself to get a grasp of the tempo, dynamics and phrasing.

5 out of 5 stars West Side Story is Fabulous.......2000-04-12

The music from West Side Story is captivating, and I love being able to relive it again and again. Hearing the music from the show takes you back to the story of a modern-day Romeo and Juliet.

1 out of 5 stars Sorry, doesn't look like it's for me..........2005-10-07

I guess this is a really technical look at the composer's life without much backstage drama, because in leafing through the index, there's no mention of Carol Lawrence, Chita Rivera or Larry Kert, the famous cast members of the original production of "West Side Story." A short chapter is devoted to the musical, but without comments either from or on its legendary cast? Bizarre.

Call me shallow, but I don't want to read something that dry.

5 out of 5 stars It was great!.......2004-03-10

It took me about 2 months to finish reading it, not because it wasn't a page-turner, but because it was a long book and also I'd been busy. It was actually a great page-turner. I could read on and on for 5-7 hours without a break.

Bernstein's personal letters to his friends and colleagues, including Aaron Copland, his thesis at Harvard, etc. were all very inspiring to read. There were quite a bit of poems he wrote also. The positive and negative sides of the great man were also well delivered without getting vulgar.
I really appreciated the author's knowledge about music and the classical music world and system.

The book makes you feel like you're living the life closely with the great man and gets you intellectually, musically, emotionally involved. You experience with him every success and failure Bernstein went through.
His talents were beyond human in some way, yet he was a man just like you and me. Sometimes his talents were greater than he as a man, and as a result the world occasionally saw him fall apart. The book is honest about his failures and misbehaviours without being accusatory. It makes you want to forgive the man for the wrongs he'd done. The burden he was carrying as genius was more than an ordinary man could bear.

The book also covers the Jewish culture, politics, world events, how Bernstein and his genius contributed to the world and American history, etc. in relations to his achievements.
There are enough interviews with his friends and family, reviews on Bernstein's works, letters etc. but the author uses his own narratives to tell us about the man, which is, I think, why this book is more solid and readable. Only, I wish there were more photographs. But oh well, you can't ask for everything.

Great, inspiring book. I might read it again.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, with a Human Touch.......2000-06-07

This bio skillfully covers Bernstein's background, his philosophy, his methods of viewing and performing music. Bernstein was a man of conflict, always wishing to compose (indeed, he wanted to be remembered not as a conductor, primarily, but as a composer) but knew he had to remain with conducting in order to earn his living. And Bernstein was a splendid composer .. I personally think his Candide and West Side Story are masterpieces without peer, and his orchestral works are incredibly daring and far sighted for their time. Bernstein, though a genius, was all too human. He struggled endlessly with his sexuality, yet remained entirely devoted to his wife and children. Burton thoroughly explores Bernstein's many friendships with those in the music world, the most touching being his involvements with Copland and Mitropoulous. Both recognized Bernstein's genius, and were also painfully aware of his inner conflicts and fragile ego, and strove to uplift and encourage him so that he might make his true mark in the arts. The photos in this book are splendid, and Burton's writing is crisp and engaging. You will come away from this book with a renewed respect and enthusiasm for Bernstein the man and the musician.

5 out of 5 stars An Inspirational yet realistic biography.......1999-06-04

I agree along with many that this is the definitive Bernstein biography. I have read it on and off for over a year now, and have gone back to particular sections not only to refresh my memory but to re-read Burton's fluid writing. An inspirational book about an all-around genius and the whirlwind tour of a life he lived. The book motivated me to delve into Berstein's life even further (quite costly y'know... with all the recordings, Norton Lectures, Young People's Concerts, various other video performances, writings, etc.)

4 out of 5 stars A balanced view of the myth and the man.......1999-01-08

If you are interested in Bernstein, this is the biography to read. It neither raises him up too high nor tears him apart. Much of it deals with Bernstein's inner turmoil and how that impacted his relationships. Bernstein's humanity comes through very strongly. An enjoyable read, good pictures too.

5 out of 5 stars Short, but great page turner.......2004-05-03

A delightful book for Bernstein fans. As the author says in his preface, it's not a biography. It consists of episode after episodes of Bernstein's genius work life. We, the general public, take his work for granted and be amazed by his genius, but we have no idea how much commitment and dedication were given to each work he has delivered. NOt just his dedication but everybody else who had collaborated with him. After reading this book, I can appreciate his work even more.
The author never loses good humor and he writes about the most difficult situations he and the maestro had faced with good spirits and wit. Bernstein was a great man, but so was Schuyler Chapin, I should say.
Humphrey Burton's Bernstein's biography is a good book to go with this one (it's a great book also, by the way). Just as some episodes made me laugh in Burton's bio, this one made me laugh and smile many times. The dinner party episode, visit with Japanese writer Mishima, the helicopter episode, and many more will tell you warmly and humrously about the man. The great maestro was not only a genius but quite a character.
It also tells what and how much effort it takes to put a great performace up on stage for us to enjoy. I shall not complain about concert tickets being expensive any more!
Easy read, relaxed and reader-friendly, great page-turner.
I didn't want to finish reading it.

Book Description

This classic work is perhaps Bernstein's finest collection of conversations on the meaning and wonder of music. This book is a must for all music fans who wish to experience music more fully and deeply through one of the most inspired, and inspiring, music intellects of our time. Employing the creative device of "Imaginary Conversations" in the first section of his book, Bernstein illuminates the importance of the symphony in America, the greatness of Beethoven, and the art of composing. The book also includes a photo section and a third section with the transcripts from his televised Omnibus music series, including "Beethoven's Fifth Symphony," "The World of Jazz," "Introduction to Modern Music," and "What Makes Opera Grand."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bernstein at His Best.......2007-09-05

This is Leonard Bernsteain at his best. It's a fun book, an engaging and fascinating book. All the Bernstein wit and wisdom is here. It's a book for both musicians and those wanting to learn about music in a fun way.

You won't regret spending time or money on this gem.

5 out of 5 stars A true Renaissance man.......2004-04-05

Leonard Bernstein excelled at everything he tried--he was a fantastic conductor, composer, and writer. From popular music from West Side Story to jazz to "serious art music" like Chichester Psalms and his Mass, Bernstein was never constrained by any seeming limitations. This book is a compilation Bernstein's writings. The first section consists of dialogues between Bernstein and several imaginary characters regarding society's philosophy of music. These discussions are quite intellectual and thought-provoking. The second section contains seven television transcripts about subjects ranging from Musical Theater to J.S. Bach. This half is much more accessible and a breeze to read. If you can't read music, you would enjoy getting CDs of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, Brahms' First Symphony, and Bach's St. Matthew Passion before curling up with this book. It will enhance your enjoyment of Bernstein's exciting descriptions, and will make them come to life.

5 out of 5 stars The Joy of Music---a thorough and inspired work.......1998-01-25

This is a complete, lucid, approachable and vibrant book. The dialogues at the beginning reveal the many facets of Bernstein's character and of his startling brilliance, and the section on modern music should not be missed. Of course, for the sections taken from his Omnibus television programs, the textual medium can only inform the reader what would be happening on screen, and those descriptions probably lack the power of audio-visual aids. It is, however, a work that any student of music, or any lover of music, would be able to take for granted in a Perfect World.

4 out of 5 stars Very intelligent and insightful dicussion of music........1996-05-30

This is a great book for those who wish to know how a composer/conductor thinks about music. The discussion presented is witty, intelligent and very insightful. My only problem with the book is that it should be accompanied by a CD or video tape. All of the examples are presented as written music. If you can't read and play/sing the music in the book you will have only a vague idea of the point the author is trying to make.

Music from Wonderful Town has been out of print for more than 40 years, so we are very proud to present this new edition of the brilliant musical comedy currently running in an acclaimed Broadway revival! The music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green tell the story of two sisters who move from Ohio to Greenwich Village. After many hardships of adjustment, they find New York to be a "Wonderful Town." The original run of the show opened in 1953 and starred Rosalind Russell, and the Broadway revival, which opened on November 23, 2003, stars Donna Murphy. The cast recording is being released by DRG Records. Our Vocal Score includes all of the music from the musical.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Song Book!.......2004-04-16

I love the new recording of this musical, and was disappointed when it didn't come with printed lyrics to the songs. So I was very excited when I saw the new Wonderful Town songbook, which has almost all of the songs from the show, plus a synopsis. These songs are lovely reminders of the show, and would be great to sing in revues or talent shows, for I don't think Wonderful Town is a very well known show, which is a shame. I think it's one of Comden and Green's best. Songs like "Swing" and "Pass the Football" only get better when you see the lyrics in their full glory. My only wish is that they had included color stills of the show, but we can't have everything!

      Book Description

The varied forms of Leonard Bernstein's musical creativity have been recognized and enjoyed by millions. These lectures, Mr. Bernstein's most recent venture in musical explication, will make fascinating reading as well. Virgil Thomson says of the lectures: "Nobody anywhere presents this material so warmly, so sincerely, so skillfully. As musical mind-openers they are first class; as pedagogy they are matchless".

Mr. Bernstein considers music ranging from Hindu ragas through Mozart and Ravel, to Copland, suggesting a worldwide, innate musical grammar. Folk music, pop songs, symphonies, modal, tonal, atonal, well-tempered and ill-tempered works all find a place in these discussions. Each, Mr. Bernstein suggests, has roots in a universal language central to all artistic creation. Using certain linguistic analogies, he explores the ways in which this language developed and can be understood as an aesthetic surface. Drawing on his insights as a master composer and conductor, Mr. Bernstein also explores what music means below the surface: the symbols and metaphors which exist in every musical piece, of whatever sort. And, finally, Mr. Bernstein analyzes twentieth century crises in the music of Schoenberg and Stravinsky, finding even here a transformation of all that has gone before, as part of the poetry of expression, through its roots in the earth of human experience.

These talks, written and delivered when Leonard Bernstein was Charles Eliot Norton Professor of Poetry at Harvard University, are the newest of the author's literary achievements. In addition to a distinguished career as conductor, pianist, and composer, Mr. Bernstein is the recipient of many television Emmys for the scripts of his Young People's Concerts, Omnibus programs, and others, and is the author of The Infinite Variety of Music and The Joy of Music, for which he received the Christopher Award.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Very Enlightening.......2004-06-06

In response the reviewer who complains that Leonard Bernstein raises more questions than he answers, the composer never purports to be doing anything in these lectures than raise informed points -- hence the title, The Unanswered Question. He gives an extremely cogent hypothesis to explain how and why we perceive music on an emotional level, and from what I've heard, nothing's been shown to disprove his ideas.

Beware that although Bernstein tries to put everything in "layman"'s terms, many of the concepts touched upon will be difficult to understand without a rudimentary knowledge of musical notation.

I found this 'book' to be extremely interesting and a unique, welcome perspective on the nature of music. Those of you interested in Bernstein's compositions will get a nice long look at the inner workings of the mind of one of America's greatest composers; and even if his insights as to the answers of the questions he's asking are erroneous, the manner in which he couches said questions is insightful in and of itself, and more than worth the investment.

5 out of 5 stars Musicology at its best!.......2000-01-17

I respect Bernstein even more as a scholar of music and languages than I do as a conductor. I thought this was an inspired literary work of his, really. For example, his explanation of musical motive in Beethoven's 5th Symphony where we are shown that Beethoven has taken the common coda form, TA TA TA DUM, that many classical works end with, and turned it to a motive from which derives the motion and power of HIS entire symphony. That is Bernstein at his most insightful and brilliant. Wonderful! Illuminating! I would never have thought of things that only a conductor and musicologist can otherwise understand and explain. Thank you Lenny, we love you!

      5 out of 5 stars genius.......1999-09-20

This is genius. Only now scientific research is proving his incredible leap of imagination.

3 out of 5 stars Is strongest when considering music.......1999-03-21

The Unanswered Question, the transcript of six lectures delivered at Hardvard in 1973, outline a new theory of music. Inspired by work of Noam Chomsky and other linguists, Bernstein attempts to find a system of musical grammar analagous to that of language. This is the weakest part of the book. He makes strained generalizations and is attempting to show something that quite possibly isn't true. Starting with the third lecture, however, his work becomes stronger. He includes an efficient analysis of Beethoven's Pastorale Symphony without any extramusical associations. Then he proceeds (with musical examples) to trace the "twentieth century crisis" in music and how Schoenberg and Stravinsky derived different "solutions." This is the strongest past of the book, and certianly worth suffereing through the first two weaker lectures. "The Unasnwered Question" is strongest for raising questions rather than answering them.

      5 out of 5 stars The real deal - - and I mean it ! ! ! .......2006-09-13

Good news and bad news about this book... It represents an older method, an older way of thinking... it is brutal to learn, requires a lot of intelligence and commitment, and there are "simpler" approaches out now. The good news:
Yeah, but who the heck is playing with the conceptual depth of the players who came out in this era when harmonic mastery was absolutely essential and players were, for the most part INTELLIGENT and profoundy conceptual, and why do players these days have all the "technique" in the world, yet seem to lack the depth of the older players ???

And so welcome back to the 60 chord system of Jazz... your block chords, their inversions... the way tones are added, roman numeral analysis, and all the scary stuff related to Jazz harmony - - not to mention the 60 scales and use of "sensitive tones", "open axis voicings" and a whole bunch of terminology not as common these days. In the end, this book is phenomenal because for those wishing to take the path you will receive the same type of training most of the masters came up on. However - - it is not for everyone. In fact, when I took my first Jazz lesson, and a teacher (with far lesser abilities to organize the info and articulate himself than Mehegan) laid this on me... I pretty much stopped showing up for the lessons and almost quit. Amadea's book saved my life and got me back into playing, but now I've come full circle, and I really appreciate this series.

In the end, my advice is that even though this WAS the info people taking Jazz courses were started on years ago, it might not be the right for everyone in the getgo, however, at some point, this is one of those vital documentations that is more than just an instructional method... it is a vital contribution to Jazz Harmony and its - - less than abstract truths.

Mehegan's works serve as indispensable sources for all jazz pianists since he devises lessons that are simply not found elsewhere; I have a good library of quality jazz books, but let me emphasize some of the things that are hardly addressed in other books. In volume one, you get:
1.) Complete right hand fingering suggestions for seventh arpeggios. Some may consider these obvious, but it's an erroneous assumption. This is the only book in my collection that gives clear instructions on practicing seventh chord arpeggios in all qualities (major, minor, dominant, half-diminished, diminished). Most other works focus exclusively on triads.
2.) Good fingering suggestions for diminished and half-diminished scales.
3.) Scale-tone sevenths in all keys.
      4.) Inversions in all qualities.
      5.) Dozens of progressions.
      6.) Transcription exercises.
      7.) Modal material.

The list goes on, and this is only in volume 1. There's enough for a few lifetimes. The other works in the set are just as complete.

As a final point, many readers have raised questions about the author's use of figured bass, but it's important to understand his goal. Early on in volume one, he argues that using letters for chords (Ab, Cm7, etc.) limits you to one key. If you learn the roman numeral relationships in a progression, you can transpose it to any key. In fact, he deliberately does this to get you to think across the keys. The author obviously knows chord progressions in original keys, but he is challenging readers to think in terms of the roman numerals in order to develop ease at transposition. The other part deals with the intervallic displacements that occur when you invert chords. Basically--you have four inversions, and he designates them with the figured bass system. But don't be intimidated by thinking that you'll be overwhelmed with new information. If anything, it can clarify your thinking--of course, if you're willing to do the work.

Serious students can't go wrong with these monumental and historical works--whether they use them sequentially or occasionally for great practice ideas.

4 out of 5 stars For serious study.......2003-07-10

Mehegan's book is written for piano players, but will be valuable to other musicians as well. The book presents a large number of standards for study, focusing on thinking from the harmonic structure. I has lots of ideas to guide practice and study, but it is for serious work only: unlike some books that can be approached at various levels and still offer some rewards, this one requires that you sit down and work. It does offer rewards, though

3 out of 5 stars Be careful when buying this book - or books from this series.......2000-02-23

This book might be good, but only for one who has previous experience in playing Jazz piano. It really does not teach you the principles and help you learn jazz. Its more like an exercise book to help improve a already-know-how-to jazz pianist w/ tons of songs inside for practise (and by the way, you would have to have the sheet music for the songs inside to refer to). I personally do not recommend it for beginners.
