Post-It's have taken over cause I bookmarked too many pages........2003-05-06
I own and use this book so often in my Art Therapy groups that this book is flooded with Post It notes. I do adapt most of the activity suggestions to make them fit each client population. The book is flexible and could be applied to youth, teen, or adult/senior populations. It is written and indexed in an easy-to-read manner based on the mode of therapy practiced. The suggestions themselves are general enough however do conveniently elaborate with bullet-marked suggestions for different ways to try out the various activities. So if you think you've worked with clay, perhaps you have not written an acoustic poem about it and then created an environment for the sculpture, etc. Several variations and ideas were new and fresh. Great book for the novice or for the seasoned professional who needs some help getting new ideas sparked up and fueled; a quick, easy (and relatively inexpensive) A.T. reference.
It's worth enough to read.......2000-06-27
I'm Thai student of MA program in counseling psychology. I'm also a prationer of creative arts therapy. I found that this book is quite useful for the beginner of art therapy. This book offers many activities, exercises and games which you could adapt it in your own work. So I recommend you to have this book as your material.
In between.......2000-03-02
Unlike the first 2 reviews of this book, my opinion falls somewhere in between. While this is not the most comprehensive or profound book on art therapy, it is a practical guide for practitioners who need lots of ideas for group activities. How well they work depends on the skills and insight of the group leader, as well as the readiness of the group participants. One of my art therapy students bought this book recently and found it quite useful. For the more advanced practitioner, it might feel a bit too much like a recipe book. I recommend it as one tool in your art therapy toolbox.

This is a great book and very helpful if you practice art therapy as I do. I especially like how she has given special consideration to all kinds of groups, it's not just an abstract manual. Referred to it by a colleague, I would recommend it also.

Managing Traumatic Stress Through Art: Drawing from the Center
ASIN: 1572308095 |
Book Description
This essential handbook provides a complete and practical overview of art therapy: how it works, how it can be used, and with whom. Demonstrated are interventions for children, adolescents, and adults facing a variety of clinical problems and life challenges. Case-based chapters from leading practitioners illuminate major theoretical perspectives, including psychoanalytic, cognitive-behavioral, developmental, and other approaches. Also examined is what current research in psychology and neuroscience can tell us about the scientific basis for art therapy. Discussing applications in individual psychotherapy, couple and family treatment, and group work, the Handbook includes over 100 samples of drawings and other artwork. The process of art therapy is illustrated in helping clients manage and cope with such problems as trauma, sexual abuse, developmental and learning disabilities, drug and alcohol misuse, serious mental illness, and medical illness. Appendices include descriptions of empirically supported approaches to art-based assessment, some of which are written by the instrument developers themselves.
Customer Reviews:
finally, a readable and up-to-date book for professionals.......2003-05-30
As a recent counseling graduate (PhD), I was always put off by the art therapy books on the market. They were all so poorly written and talked about antiquated theories of counseling and therapy. Now, finally there is a wonderfully readable text and I am glad to have found it as I begin work with clients. This book is for anyone who is interested in using art in their work with adults, children, adolescents, and groups-- there are helpful chapters on trauma, medical issues, autism, ADHD, etc. There are also sections on art therapy assessments that are very well written and concise.
This is the state-of-the-art art therapy book for your counseling, psychology, or art therapy library. Also, if you are a beginner, see Malchiodi's Art Therapy Sourcebook, another readable volume.

Customer Reviews:
Extremely Helpful.......2007-08-06
I'm trying to decide how to direct my master's research in Music Therapy, and the Handbook has been vastly helpful for me. The organization of the chapters by subject is wonderfully clear and spans a fantastic range of therapy topics. Her writing style is professional but warm and I find it very easy to read and comprehend. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Music Therapy! It's a must have!
Great introductory book for students.......2003-01-04
I'm one of the many students of music therapy using this as a textbook for class. Hanser describes her process in therapy well, discussing all the necessary aspects from assessment to termination. My relatives are reading this to learn more about what I'm learning as well. It might be dry reading if you're not already somewhat knowledgeable about music therapy. For a first taste, I'd recommend Kenneth Bruscia's Case Studies.
Great Basic Start!.......2002-01-17
This book is a great start to a person interested in Music Therapy. The outlines of the treatment were a great help. The only thing I wish were included were certian techniques they used.
A Very Complete Primer on Music Therapy.......2001-02-20
I am a registered music therapist. I found this to be a very understandable and easy to read book. It outlines everything a music therapist needs to know in a clinical setting. It would be a great book for an intro to music therapy class. It sets the tone for a solid music therapy program.
First, it defines music therapy with different populations, i.e., behavior disorders, developmental disabilities, psychiatric disorders, medical patients, etc. In short, all of the places where music therapists work.
Second, it outlines the steps: Identifying the therapeutic objectives, assessment, designing a therapeutic plan, determining strategies, implementing the plan, and evaluating the music therapy. Each step is a chapter in the book, and each chapter ends with a selection of other books for further reading.
In a nutshell, this is goal-oriented music therapy. If all university programs educated their students (and not all do) as concisely as this book, there would be a lot more good music therapists walking around.
Looking Forward to Reading It.......2000-05-31
I haven't read this book yet, but I am REALLY looking forward to it. I am a sophomore in high school and I am planning of going into the field of Music Therapy after college. I want to read this book as soon as I can so that I will have a good idea of what I have before me in this line of duty.
Customer Reviews:
Very practical .......2007-03-12
You can't miss this book if you're interested in Gestalttherapy or Play therapy.
Also great reading!
