Book Description
If you want to do more than simply use Logic to improve the audio in your video projects-if you want to start actually creating and producing music with it-this Apple-certified guide provides the key. Whether you're a composer, producer, songwriter, engineer, studio programmer or simply want to create and produce pro-quality music in your Logic-based home studio, you'll find all the self-paced, step-by-step instruction you need here to begin creating your audio master works immediately. As both a professional musician and a former employee of eMagic and Apple (the former and current makers of the software), author David Dvorin knows Logic like no one else. Here, he uses project-based tutorials to reveal all of its secrets, including its newest: advanced DSP techniques and the ability to layer MIDI instruments and split channels. In short order you'll be scoring and composing; jamming with Logic's software instruments; employing advanced mixing, editing, and production techniques; and more. A companion CD includes trial Logic plug-in software and the lesson files needed to complete the book's exercises.

So Far, So Good.......2006-11-14
I bought this book primarily to print out charts. The book is very clear on the "how-to-do-it" businesss. As my use of/experience with Logic increases, so does my use of this book. IMHO it's a good investment!
Agree with everyone else - it's great.......2006-10-22
What I particularly like about this book is it's 'real world' feel - Logic Pro has vast functionality, but the author hones in on a few fairly simple ways of doing things, as opposed to going through every feature. I would like to have seen more emphasis on mixing/production, but that's minor - this book can't be everything.
My only beef with with the book is the banal tracks you use with the tutorial. If you are into that kind of go-nowhere take-yourself-too-seriously rockpop that hasn't changed in three decades, fine - but this sort of music doesn't show off Logic's major differentiator - it's synths and the newer styles of music that use them.
Covers everthing.......2006-07-05
This is a goodf book. But the lessions were not as fun as they could have been. But if you want content and relative ease of understanding, it here.
I've read better learning books, though.
Recommended.......2006-07-03
Being a long time Logic user, i still happen to not utilize the App to it's fullest. What I like about this book, is the Structure, with the chapters and the Tasks to fulfill. So it get's me closer to a streamlined workflow.
Apple Logic Pro 7 Training Level 1 is Essential knowledge.......2006-03-15
Very good for beginners, or more experienced users who are switching to Logic from another platform. The lessons are very basic, but they provide the backbone of how Logic works, and help speed up the workflow quickly. Recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Lots to learn in Auditon 2.......2007-03-09
A great book and cd of data. Because of not the greatest help files and no tutorials that came with Audition 2.0 this program while very powerful can be quite intimidatiing. Classroom in a book is very helpful in getting started and learning how to use the program.
. . . for the cautious.......2007-02-18
Could be considered a waste of time by many who are more experienced with applications of this sort. The difficult part is sticking to the tutorials and not wandering off on your own. Everything covered here can be accessed via the help files and user guide. Adobe might want to consider putting a little more effort into features such as a midi sequencer than reiterating itself.
EXASPERATING BUT INDISPENSIBLE.......2006-09-21
Above all, make sure the version of Audition 2.0 Classroom in a Book IS FOR YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM. Also understand that you must have the program to make sense of the manual.
Classroom in a Book is a good guide, but it has two omissions.
Anyone is in their rights to expect that a guide of this sort would have at least a few passages about live recording---but there is exactly one passing sentence in the entire manual about live recording. In Multitrack View the tracks have a panel wherein (among a great many other virtual dials and buttons and such) there is an "M" button, a "S" button, and an "R" button. "M" is for mute, which is explained more than once (even more than twice over the course of the book). "S" is for "Solo", which is also explained to its death over and over again. But as for the "R" button there is only one sentence regarding it.
"R" is "Armed for Record".
Now, maybe someone with a background in audio-editing software knows full well what "Armed for Record" means. Even for a rank beginner like me it wasn't that hard to figure out, I'll admit, but still for a book to go on and on about the other two buttons and to just mention the third term without any further comment seems to me a fundamental lapse. In my case it made for the beginning of a series of exasperating stumbles.
Going at it blind, I simply clicked on "R" and got a message informing me that the best recording was achieved by switching to ASIO. I knew that ASIO meant "Audio Stream In/Out" and had something to do with the new sound card that I had installed. The old sound card that had originally come with the computer was still in there, but apparently from what the message said I would only get mediocre results if I didn't switch by going to Edit and clicking on Audio Hardware Set-Up and following instructions from there on. Needless to say, this was easily done, and in seconds I had switched the program to my new audio card, which any intermediate or advanced user would have known to do from the get-go. Why install the card and not make sure the program was set to it? Ordinarily I would not even admit to anybody that I had to be told to do this; it's embarrassing; but still Audition is a very involved program; there's a lot to learn; and I was just very new to this whole business.
Anyway, I switched, and that should have been the end of it, but sadly the minute I switched my "R" buttons went gray and became inoperable! What's that? Maybe there's no problem on a Mac; I wouldn't know. All I know is that I'm a Windows XP Home Edition guy as I write this; and I lost my "R" buttons!
To say this upset me and got me mad is an understatement. The next morning I was in a better frame of mind and logically went over the steps and saw that there was a pattern to what was happening. For some reason switching to ASIO will gray out the "R" buttons, but if you close the program and go back to it you'll have your "R" buttons back and still be in ASIO.
It's that simple, but there's no mention of it in the book.
Of course, "Armed for Record" must be followed up by clicking on the circular red button on what is called the "Transport Panel" at the bottom of the screen. You're left to guess this, but anyone who has operated a ghetto blaster or a VCR knows what that red circle is; but still it would nice for Adobe to spell this out for us intimidated newbies.
The other big omission gets back to the same lapse as the other one. The book does not bother to point out that switching to ASIO in Multitrack View will not carry over to Edit View. It may not seem like a big deal, but I freaked out when my stuff sounded so weak in Edit View. I couldn't figure it out. The louder I got it in Edit View the more obnoxiously deafening it became in Multitrack View because the two "views" were coming at me through two entirely different sound cards!
Finally I realized what the problem was. Duh . . .
On the positive side in the last analysis it's actually very nice that the two windows can have different settings to let me know how the same file will sound on different computers. My thing with this will be podcasting, and podcasting is about posting on the Net, so one should be aiming at a happy medium that accommodates ordinary cards and quality cards alike. I'm getting better and better at it. The quality will never be a sound stage level thing, but I'm fast approaching the same smoothness of an FM radio commercial.
So go with this book, yes, but keep my comments in mind as you go.

Customer Reviews:
Mary Plummer Starts the Soundtrack Pro Vehicle.......2007-03-26
Think of this book as driving instruction. Mary Plummer starts the car and now, you get to do the driving. The easy to follow comprehesive lessons in this book are more than enough to get you through the application. And once you have learned to operate the essentials, the rest of the drive is up to you. Turn left, turn right, speed up slow down, well, you get the picture. If you are the imaginative sort, this application can do things to enhance any of your video projects. This program even works for the rythmically challenged!
Bear in mind though, Mary's book is not intended to take you into the depths of award-winning audio post-production. If thats what you're looking for you probably need to seek an internship or hang around your local Guitar Centar. But if you want to learn how to be creative enough with Soundtrack Pro to keep your video viewing audience on the entertainment edge then this well-written book is a must.
I have used Soundtrack to score TV broadcast commercial IDs. Local commercials and proms are next. Shhhh! No one knows except me. Being paid for simply playing around. For more hot and interesting loops, see Douglas Spotted Eagle's book Using Soundtrack: Produce Original Music for Video, DVD, and Multimedia.
A Good Primer, in some respects.......2007-03-24
A word to those who are looking for a comprehensive reference and how-to book for Soundtrack Pro: this is not that book, nor is it intended to be. Instead, this book is a lesson-based primer that quickly takes you through many common tasks that anyone who is starting out in the world of audio Post-production will need to know at some point. The operative word being "quickly". This is NOT an in-depth look at Soundtrack Pro's most important functions, in terms of what they do, how they work and when you want to use one type of functionality over another.
Also, since the one person who took the time to write a real review mentioned it, if you're thinking about owning Soundtrack Pro and looking to see what kind of literature is available first, don't make the mistake of thinking STP is the "Photoshop of audio post-production." It's not, though it shares some common points with the progams that are. If you want the whole ball of wax, Logic Pro or Digital Performer from Motu are the tools you'll want to look at. Like Photoshop, they can perform a huge number of audio post-production and recording taks, but they're also hugely complex. Just depends on what your needs are and how much time you're able to dedicate to learning the toolset.
Overall this book is helpful in understanding how the Soundtrack Pro interface is laid out, and where the basic functional components are located and what they do. However, it's not the kind of book where you can look up a single important topic like "Voiceovers" or "eliminating ambient noise" and find 15 pages throughout the book on ways to accomplish those tasks. IOW, this isn't a reference work you set on your desk and find lots of answers as you go through the program trying to learn new things.
It's more like a 2 day class that covers a variety of basic lessons, compressed into a book.
Brand New + Fast Shipping.......2007-03-10
It was delivered right on time and in brand new condition like advertised.
Apple Pro Training Series: Soundtrack Pro (Apple Pro Training).......2007-01-05
Great Book -- has helped me a lot to understad sound editing.
The Soundtrack Pro Book.......2006-02-13
Mary Plummer, whose fun book on Apple Soundtrack helped walk users through the features of what was once a relatively limited utility, has upgraded the curriculum for the revamped Soundtrack Pro, a tool some have called "the Photoshop of audio". Now, as a Photoshop user myself, I wouldn't say Soundtrack has quite the depth to yet make that claim ... however, Apple has indeed rebuilt it from the ground up into what is leaps and bounds beyond the clip/loop manager it had been before. And Ms. Plummer, who has seen it grow each step of the way, has penned the best (if not only, at this time) source with which to learn its awesome capabilities.
After a quick first chapter on getting familiar with the interface (a working knowledge of Mac OS-X is essential), the reader gets up and running with projects involving sound design for a video trailer and a suspense scene, performing in depth waveform surgery (one of the key new features of Soundtrack Pro), editing audio tracks, recording and mixing audio, performing refinements and adding effects to a multi-track recording, and finally integrating it with the other tools of Final Cut Studio. That covered all the bases with this user and, as with her previous volume, kept it fun and inspired creative experimentation. It is always refreshing to learn from an author who is both an expert and an artist herself.
If you have been working with Apple's Pro Apps for any amount of time, learning Soundtrack Pro on your own isn't really rocket science, and if you just use it for loops and sound design with Final Cut Pro/Express you probably don't even need this book. But it is capable of a lot more on its own, and if you find yourself wanting to get deeper into its uses and exploit Soundtrack Pro for all it's worth, you'll find this Apple Pro Training title a well-written, invaluable, enjoyable and fast-moving route to audio enlightenment.
Thanks again Mary!

Great Purchase.......2007-09-08
Because of the reviews of others on Amazon I decided to take a look at this book and then I purchased it. Filled with tons of information. Easy to read, understand, explained well and enjoyable. You cannot go wrong with this book. I doubt even the inexperienced will have any problems using an iPod after reading this.
A must have.......2007-06-09
As with any other piece of hardware, you can blunder through, but after spending a lot for the i-pod, get a good guide, as thi is it.

Book Description
Ahead Software's Nero Ultra 6 is probably the most popular CD and DVD burning software in the world. While it seems like it should be easy to burn CDs and DVDs, burning a CD can be alot more complicated than copying a floppy, and many users reach high frustration levels after burning coaster after coaster. Nero Ultra 6 makes it alot easier to burn a CD or DVD as long as users understand the important parts of the software. Like whether to burn a multisession CD; what mode to use; whether to close the session; how best to erase a rewritable; how to burn music files; and stuff like that. The Book of Nero 6 Ultra Edition takes the user step-by-step through using Nero for various tasks, without the jargon that can make this stuff so difficult.

Great helper.......2007-06-29
I'm a beginner at putting music and pictures together to create a CD, but this book makes the program that I have much easier to understand.
I look forward to a long dog-eared relationship with it :-)
Book of Nero 6 purchase.......2005-09-30
This was an excellent transaction. I'll return for more.
Nero 6.......2005-09-19
Book arrived in wonderful condition, sooner than I had expected and is a great help to me.
Expensive toilet paper.......2004-09-03
Don't waste your money on this book! If you want to know how to use Nero, view the tutorials on their web site. Once you view a tutorial you have a whole new set of hurdles - that of trying to get Nero to work. Good Luck.
Easy composition of audio CDs.......2004-08-05
A diverse portfolio of capabilities centred around writing and reading CDs and DVDs. Most operating systems for desktops now let you write a CD or DVD. But typically this is for any type of data. You certainly want this ability.
But there are special types of data, described by Wang, that are very important to many users. When the data consists of audio or video, in various standard encodings. Nero 6 is devoted to the easy handling of these types. For example, it has a simple Wave Editor, to edit sound files. With specialised abilities like a 6 band equaliser and being able to speed up or slow down an audio recording. Wisely, Wang skips the underlying theory, which is heavy on fast Fourier transforms and extended manipulations in frequency space. He shows how you can straightforwardly use techniques described at a musician's level of decision making.
Wang also talks about how Nero can play DVD movies on your computer. Granted this is an impressive ability. But personally, I'd pass on this. If I watch a DVD, I'd prefer it on a real TV screen, and so should you. But undoubtedly, some readers will thrill to watching DVDs on their computers.
Book Description
There are basically two kinds of iPod books: (1) The "tell me all about it" kind, which includes in-depth discussions on compression algorithms, debates about analog vs. digital equalizers; and tutorials on how to export your playlist in Unicode format. (2) There's this book. It's not a "tell me all about it" book, it’s a "show me how to do it" book.
Award-winning author Scott Kelby shows you step-by-step how it's all done, using the same casual, plain-English style that has made him one of the world's best-selling technology authors. Helpful for the 1st time user.......2006-11-10
Reading through the book before I first tried to use my iPod made all the difference in the world - both from a comfort level and saving time during the first few days. Since then, some of my issues were resolved, but some do not seem to be addressed in the book, although I've found answers elsewhere. For instance, I listen to audiobooks, but found that when I would turn on the iPod, my place in the book was not saved and I had to relisten to segments to get back to the right point. Logging into iTunes and looking at their online help gave me my answer - press the wheel's middle and you get a way to navigate within chapters. So, if you have never used an iPod before, this book will help orient you - although you may need other resources for troubleshooting.
An Absolute Must-Have!.......2006-11-03
This book has been THE thing that made me go from hating my iPod to LOVING it! I wasn't planning on getting an iPod; it was given to me as a gift. I am pretty good with computers and technology in general, but I really had a hard time figuring out some of the basics with the iPod! (Oh, I know... Apple stuff is all supposed to be so "intuitive"-- well, I didn't find it to be so!)
This book is PERFECT. Every little thing you might want to figure out how to do on your iPod (or in iTunes) is laid out simply, with great pictures and screen prints so you can SEE what the author's talking about. And author Scott Kelby throws in liberal doses of humor to make it all the more enjoyable.
Best of all, each topic is just ONE PAGE LONG. Want to know how to do something? Go to that one page, read it, and you've got it! No wading through long, boring chapters of info, or dry manuals.
Topics go from the utterly basic (but necessary) "Turning Your iPod on and Off" (there is no "On/Off" button, you know!), and "Turning on the Backlight" to the more complicated "Moving Playlists Between Computers" and "Editing a Song's Start/End Points"-- the things that will really give you great enjoyment once you figure them out!
And did I mention each topic is ONLY ONE PAGE? That's the key to this great book. I highly recommend it! We keep it in a drawer right next to our computer and go back to it again and again.
One last thing: my nine-year-old has read the book from cover-to-cover, and is now quite the expert on his iPod! The perfect handbook for any age, and for any technological level. (Also covers all models of iPod).
iPod Book: Doing Cool Stuff with the iPod and the iTunes Music Store, The (2nd Edition).......2006-08-19
Great book! Love the writing style. It's like reading a personal e-mail from a friend and is so easy to understand. I don't do well with manuals, as a rule. I'll purchase Mr. Kelby's books in the future without hesitation.
Now we're talking!.......2006-08-06
I just want to thank the author,Scott Kelby for making this an easy step by step how-to book for iPod users. Thanks for using 'user friendly lingo' in your book! I can't believe how much easier it is to use my iPod now and how many features I am now using on my computer as well as my iPod. Great reference!
Easy to use resource for the non-tech savvy.......2006-07-28
I bought this book because of the format - each page has a set of instructions for how to do one thing, ensuring that it is kept simple and concise. I have had a video iPod since Christmas 2005 and could figure out enough to make playlists, download, and rip but knew no other tricks. My library now looks cleaner, misspelled titles/artists are now corrected, and I know how to better organize my over 6000 songs.
Excellent resource and easy-to-use. It's worth every penny.

Informative and attractively presented.......2006-11-12
As background, I am very much a novice when it comes to orchestration, and I read music only with great difficulty despite the efforts of several well-meaning piano teachers during my childhood. I do have a fairly good grasp of basic music theory and harmony, and I know my way around MIDI and digital audio pretty well. I mostly play by ear, just as a hobby for my own enjoyment.
I find that this book does a good job of meeting me "where I am", and helping me on from there. It is written clearly, with good examples and explanations. Physically, the book itself is exceptionally well made and very attractive.
I use the book mainly for guidance in using the instruments in Garritan Personal Orchestra in a Sonar sequencing environment, and it has been especially helpful for its insights on building ensembles and achieving a natural balance among the instruments.
revised opinion.......2006-11-02
When I first received this book I was disappointed by it. The first things I noticed where: 1) it does NOT provide a comprehensive introduction to orchestration (as another reviewer said); 2) almost half of the book consists of the author's opinions -- which are overwhelmingly positive -- of various softwares and sample libraries (information that is freely available on the internet and which is certain to be outdated quickly and which I don't want on my bookshelf and certainly don't want to pay for!) and 3) the book stank to high heaven when I got it, thanks to the chemicals used to print it in low quality hi-gloss color. Every time I touched it I felt like I had to wash my hands, as if they were covered in bleach or some other odious chemical.
So I contacted the publisher, asking if I could return the book. The publisher at first refused, saying that I hadn't ordered the book through them, so there was nothing he could do about it. But then I got a very nice letter from the author, offering a refund if I was dissatisfied with the book.
BUT....by then...in the midst of a film scoring project, I'd turned to the book and found it useful.
There are many little tips in this book that are helpful, inspiring, or both.
(Also, the chemical stench is starting to wear off.)
So I decided to keep it.
This book is aimed at folks who want to use software samplers to emulate orchestras in pursuit of the Hollywood sound. The author obviously has a great deal of experience and does have a number of interesting ideas about how to use software samplers to create soundtracks.
If you want/need brief introductions to the various intsruments of the traditional orchestra, that's here. If you want to write film scores but don't really want to bother with a book like Adler's guide to orchestration, this book can serve as a useful, though extremely basic, introduction to general orchestration principles.
But really, the book is focused on a specific kind of orchestration: the big Hollywood sound. As such, I find it useful, for 2 reasons: 1) there will always be clients who want that and 2) you have to know what the rules are before you can break them, and for better or worse, that 'Hollywood' sound rules the mainstream roost.
IN SUMMARY
The author is very nice, generous and knowledgeable.
The endless and endlessly glowing reviews in the book are annoying, but there are good advices to be had from this book.
There is absolutely no reason for this book to be 700 pages, or printed in glossy color. A 300 page
paperback in black and white, minus the software reviews, would be better.
It is not a detailed introduction to orchestration. Adler's orchestration book is much more thorough.
I'd prefer a book on this very specific subject -- using MIDI to imitate Hollywood orchestras -- that's half the size and half the price, but if you want to learn this material and eighty dollars doesn't seem like a lot of money to you, give it a shot. You may want to contact the publisher before ordering
re: their return policy if you have any thought that you might want to return the book, as there seems to be some confusion on their end.
Great source of MIDI production information!.......2006-10-26
This book is an exhaustive source of info for anyone who is trying to produce realistic orchestral music using MIDI instruments. The tips for each instrument family and the reviews of plug-ins are particulurly helpful. It does NOT teach MIDI, as one reviewer her plainly thought. For the experienced student or professional, however, it is a must have.
A Great Book.......2006-09-20
Guide to MIDI Orchestration is one of the best investments that I have ever made in my music career. I write symphonic music as well as some commercial works (to pay the bills). Both of these ventures require me to put together MIDI representations of orchestra on a regular basis. Anyone who has done this knows how difficult it is to consistently produce a great product, even if the music is great! GTMO shows how to do this, from start to finish, in a detailed way, that is not overwhelming because it is so methodically presented. I'm an experienced orchestrator and I soon found out that being able to write for orchestra and being able to produce a real sounding MIDI piece for orchestra are two totally different things. Gilreath's book has helped me to produce pieces that sound exceptionally realistic. I recommend this book to anyone doing MIDI orchestra work including classical composers, commercial composers and or course the guys doing games and film.
An Exception Book for composers.......2006-09-16
I am a music professor in NYC. I find Paul's book to be one of the most helpful and insightful books I've ever read and used. It is filled with pages of helpful information. My students and I are at two different places in our "professional" world, yet we both benefit from the book. There is enough basic set up and MIDI primer info to satisfy their needs (and my MIDI course) while the orchestration information is great for intermediate to advanced individuals, so I also use this book for my introduction to orchestration class. The real power of this book is this: It explains in a methodical manner the way to make your electronic orchestrations sound very real. Period. I have found no other book that does this. This is the second semester I've used the book for my courses and my students love it. This is a fine book deserving of serious consideration for anyone who composes for orchestra with MIDI.
Book Description
* Mashups are the computer-assisted blending of two pieces of music, usually from different genres, into one new, hot sound; perhaps rap/rock or R&B/pop
* Successful mashups require skilled use of digital audio software, often with many tracks; this book gives the aspiring mashup artist the first definitive guide to both the technology and the technique
* Explains the various mashup formulas, how to find and mix the right tracks or create your own, how to match or tweak keys and tempos, tips for mastering effects and mixing with audio software, and techniques for extracting vocals
* Examines the legal considerations mashup artists need to consider
* CD-ROM includes all necessary software for PC as well as music samples used in lessons in the book, allowing readers to "listen along" as a mashup is constructed
Customer Reviews:
Good book on Mashup creation! 3.75 stars ;-).......2007-08-23
This is a good book by a fairly accomplished Mashup creator. If you haven't heard of Mashups then you've been missing something wonderful. Mashups when created by talented musicians/djs who understand music theory and beat matching are wonderful. Bad mashups are horrible to listen to. This book takes you a long way to making great mashups and I very much liked the chapter on choosing songs (even though I already understand musical keys and tempos). The Excel spreadsheet templates and key matching templates were helpful and great musical refreshers which helped me create my own database of songs to mashup from my collection.
DJ Earworm's chapter on choosing songs was great - and the freeware tONaRT and aufTAKT (which you can throw a WAV file at and have it auto-detect the musical key and tempo in beats per minute) on the book's CD were awesome finds almost worth the price of the book themselves and they're great time savers in choosing tunes to mashup!
The only thing not making this book great is that it too heavily focuses on the specific software Acid Pro. I actually may not have purchased it if I knew that initially - though I'm glad I got it anyway. I just use other softwave like Sonar and Audition and Sound Forge so the pages on Acid specific stuff I just skimmed over. Even though it used Acid as an example, there was plenty to sink your teeth into in this book. I'd recommend it for anyone who wants to create decent mashups!

Terrible.......2007-03-20
Not to go against the curve here, but I must say this book is a complete waste of money. Any idiot can figure out half of the "secrets" mentioned in this book. The author also wastes about half of the book explaining how to do such mundane tasks as installing itunes and charging your ipod. DO NOT BUY YOU CAN FIND ALL THESE ANSWERS ONLINE WITHIN MINUTES.
The True Missing Manual Revealed.......2005-04-02
Whether you just purchased an iPod or have had one for years, you NEED THIS BOOK! This book is the true "Missing Manual." I have bought and returned a lot of books regarding my beloved iPod. This book covers it all in one book. I haven't seen anything like it, and believe me, I have been looking!
You think you know everything about iPods? Want to know how to "do something?" This is your book. I say this because I considered myself a intermediate expert (if such a term exists) helping my friends set up both their iPod and iTunes, fielding ongoing questions, suggesting cool accessory websites, etc, but this book showed me some stuff.
Got an iPod? Get the book!
The one to Buy!!.......2005-01-09
I've bought 3 other iPod books. Two were to basic but had some goodies and one was a "waste" in my opinion.
The iPod & iTunes book by Kirk REALLY adds to my knowledge base and shows he KNOWS(!) the iPod and iTunes. He goes beyond a simple product manual and tells you HOW TO GET THINGS DONE.
I highly recommend the book and ask why it took so long to come out.
Thanks Kirk!
Mac-like Approach to Learning.......2005-01-08
Anytime someone can make learning how to make software and hardware interesting and fun its worth a read.
After purchasing an iPod and struggling to make it do what I knew it was supposed to do, I scoured the book stores for a book that would show me the way. I found Kirk's fun and intuitive approach (very Mac-like) to be perfect. As a long time Apple user, and often times under utilizer of software (because I hate to read manuals). It was refreshing to find someone that gets it, and writes a book for those of us that need a little humor with our how-to. Check out is webpage too.
Another added plus... I e-mailed Kirk for a little extra help, and to my amazement he responded, timely too. With the many iPod and iTune books out there, this is one to be by your side while the others stay in the store.
Buy this Book! Not just another computer manual.......2005-01-08
Let me say this straight out - computer books are pointless, they are either of the 'for dummies' variety, printed versions of a manual [presumably to encourage software piracy] or for techies by techies...THIS BOOK IS DIFFERENT! Why? Well because the author loves music and he talks about music throughout, he [and other guest] even review music and after all what is the iPod about but love of music and the freedom to have your music where and when you wish...sure it is a clever device, clever design, etc. but leave the technical stuff for people who love technology and the design for those for whom the packaging is the thing - for the rest of us we have music. Clearly the book isn't just a compilation of reviews that might have appeared in NME or Rolling Stone [or Relix] but the appreciation of music, the passion to try and get people to try different types of music runs all the way through the book. Yes it does all you might expect from a book on the iPod [and iTunes]|: it guides the user from basics to advanced tweaks [mercifully more advanced than the this is a button, this is a scroll wheel, type of 'for dummies' stuff], but never more than a few pages go by and there is another section on some record or artist.
Grateful Dead, Brian Eno, Joy Division, Durutti Column, Steve Reich, Bill Evans - all here.
Now if I have one suggestion to the author it is to apply his technological knowledge and love of music to the wider subject of online music sharing and downloading. That will be a second 'computer book' worth buying.

well put together.......2007-02-22
The long review already in place takes care of the details. I will shortly say that this book is very well thought out, well organized, and will get you to the point of your desires. All the MIDI info is here, language is simple making this book easy especially to the MIDI uninitiated. A pleasant surprise after a couple of my other purchases.
Comprehensive update to an excellent book on MIDI technology.......2006-05-10
Although a variety of MIDI gear has been replaced by software, in-depth information about MIDI is as useful as ever. A full two decades after its inception, most musicians working in the electronic realm only have a cursory knowledge of what this technology is capable of and how to fully take advantage of it within the modern recording studio. Fortunately, the second edition of MIDI Power is designed to clear up much of this mystery. The first few chapters address MIDI hardware, General MIDI, and Standard MIDI Files, followed by almost 60 pages devoted to MIDI messages. Two chapters on MIDI computer basics lead to discussions of sequencing, virtual instruments, and advanced topics. The author guides users through various real-world scenarios on how to incorporate MIDI's myriad functions into the average studio situation, including topics such as SysEx data, General MIDI, the use of USB and FireWire MIDI devices, and how to interface computers and external hardware. The book's appendices are gold mines of information, incorporating technical explanations, practical tips, and the official MIDI 1.0 Specification. Each chapter ends with review problems for which there are answers in the back of the book. The book is profusely illustrated and is a worthwhile update to the valuable but aged first edition. I highly recommend it. Amazon does not show the table of contents, so I do that here:
1. The Basics - Covers the history and definition of MIDI.
2. Basic MIDI Messages - Looks at the information contained in a MIDI message and its syntax.
3. Control Change Messages - Looks at a specific type of MIDI message, the Control Changes, and how to use this type of message to control a performance.
4. General MIDI and Standard MIDI Files - Addresses compatibility when sharing MIDI files with others. Discusses the General MIDI file format and extensions made to it.
5. MIDI Hardware Devices - From sound modules to MIDI patch bays, looks at a wide range of MIDI-supporting audio devices.
6. MIDI and the Computer MIDI Interfaces - What you need to start using your computer with external MIDI devices.
7. MIDI Inside Your Computer - How to get your computer working properly with MIDI and audio applications as well as MIDI/audio related peripherals.
8. Sequencing with MIDI - Looks at the most popular type of MIDI application inside your computer and covers its configuration, the recording process, and editing environment.
9. MIDI Software: A Sound Creation Environment - Looks at the world of software instruments.
10. MIDI Software Applications - An overview of the different ways that programmers have used their skills to make MIDI very versatile. Also looks at creating MIDI-enabled web pages.
11. Deeper into MIDI: System Exclusive and Synchronization - Along with SysEx, examines how you can synchronize different devices, software, and video using MIDI's synchronization options.
12. The Standard MIDI File Format - This completes chapter four's introduction to the SMF by looking at the construction of a MIDI file, its parameters, and the values within those parameters. Here you learn how to repair a corrupted MIDI file.
