Product Description

This book takes you beyond showing you which sliders do what to reveal the secrets of the new digital photography workflow using Adobe Lightroom, and he does it using three simple techniques that make this just a great learning tool: 1) Throughout the book Scott shares his own personal settings and studio tested techniques he s developed using Lightroom for his own photography workflow since well before Adobe released even the first Beta version. He knows what really works, what doesn t, and he tells you flat out which tools to use, which to avoid, and why. 2) The entire book is laid out in a real workflow order with everything step-by-step, so you can jump right in using Lightroom like a pro from the very start and sidestep a lot of productivity killing road blocks and time-wasting frustrations that might have tripped you up along the way. 3) In the last two bonus chapters Scott visually answers his No.1 most-asked Lightroom question, which is: Exactly what order am I supposed to do things in, and where does Photoshop fit in? Scott teaches this by showing every step of the entire process, from the initial shoot to the final prints. Both chapters start with an on-location photo shoot, including full details on the equipment, camera settings, and even the lighting techniques. You ll see it all as he takes the photos from each shoot all the way through the entire workflow process, to the final output of the 16x20 prints for the client.

4 out of 5 stars Good information, if a little too "cute".......2007-10-04

Scott Kelby is one of the most prolific technical writers in the business. By his own acclamation he is the world's #1 best-selling author of all computer and technology books, across all categories. That means a lot of people must like his books and buy a lot of them (either that or he's really rich and just publishes tons of them that sit in warehouses somewhere). So what's his style like? How about up-beat, jocular, full of punny side remarks and allusions intended to be humorous, forever positive, anything is possible, never boring...unless you get just a little tired of the incessant pandering to keep the reader's attention. But he knows the software and is good with tips on how to make it work, and even though he's a Mac evangelist, he takes the time to address cross-platform issues whenever they come up.

The software. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is destined to be one of the most popular imaging programs Adobe, or anyone else, has written. To a certain degree it will very likely slow sales of the full version of Photoshop, not because that is an inherently flawed program, but because Lightroom takes a more streamlined approach in often more intuitive and elegant fashion to basic and intermediate digital imaging needs. It makes a great front end for downloading files, sorting and labeling, making quick and effective adjustments, cataloging and managing the files, and purposing them for output to print, web, or slideshow. In doing all this it doesn't replace Photoshop because Lightroom omits complex targeted adjustments, compositing, or layers, so there are very good reasons to use Lightroom in concert with Photoshop for a full-fledged imaging workflow accommodating efficiency when minor adjustments are enough, and effectiveness when an image simply requires complex work.

The book. In a nutshell, Scott's books work very well for a beginning and intermediate audience. Every individual learns in a different fashion, but the trend of the time is to be simple and visual. Scott accomplishes that through design and method. Throughout the book there are lots of pictures and screenshots with explanatory text along the outside of the pages. The ratio is about 1/3 text, 2/3 pics. And the method goes right to the heart of communication by picking a subject and then taking you right through it step by step. Most of the explanations are lucid and thorough, conveying a lot of info in a short time, and lots of clever suggestions are offered along the way. The coverage is pretty thorough. Of course reading a book does not make one a software expert; that takes lots of serious study and hands-on practice. But again, if you follow all the steps all the way through the book, you should gain pretty good facility with Lightroom.

Shortcomings? Sure; several. For one, software often changes faster than books can be published about it (that's not the book's fault of course). With this one you can register with Peachpit.com (parent of the publisher New Riders) for updates, which is a strong step in the right direction. With regard to style, I could do less with some of the humorously-intended but somewhat tiresome banter, but that's just a personal preference; don't let my view get in your way if Kelby's style helps you learn. Finally, some folks really need to know not just the "what" or "how to" but also the "why;" not too much of the "why" here. On the other hand, if all the "whys" were addressed the book would be twice as long, get boring, and probably be bought and read by far fewer people.

Conclusion. A bright tome that deserves space on the bookshelves or most new Adobe Photoshop Lightroom users, especially those who learn well from a light-hearted, mostly visual presentation. Not a bad reference for advanced users either. All in all, solidly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2007-10-03

This doesn't go into a great deal of depth. It is great for what it is, a good introduction to using Lightroom. However, don't expect to become a Lightroom pro with this. What I wanted was an introduction to Lightroom, and that's what I got, so I am happy with it.

4 out of 5 stars Great Instructions, easy to learn.......2007-09-26

As all other Kelby's, this one too gives you all you need to learn a Adobe Program in an incredibly fast way. If you don't like the intro's before the chapters, just don't read them. Personally, I like them to distract a little bit in between. Start up your program, open the book and a few hours later you're really on the go! Perfect!

5 out of 5 stars Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Book for Digital Photographers,The (Voices That Matter.......2007-09-25

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Book for Digital Photographers,The (Voices That Matter)I found this step-by-step how-to book very helpful. It does a great job of organizaing work flow and explaining exactly what each of those dozens of sliders do to the photos. Requires a lot of time to apply, so if you are serious about using Lightroom, this is for you. I found the bits of humor enjoyable, some may not. I would like to see the screen shots a bit larger, my old eyes find 4 pt font difficult, but the text is easy and logical.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Read!.......2007-09-24

If you don't have Adobe Lightroom, I suggest you buy it ASAP. This program is absolutley AMAZING!!! And once you buy the software, get Scott's book on it! Just as all Scott's books accomplish; it takes you step by step through the whole program so you can be on your way in no time!!!

Book Description

Creating memorable photographs is a process that starts before you edit an image in Photoshop, before you capture the image, even before you pick up the camera. You must first approach the subject with the proper sense of perception, with the ability to visualize the finished print before you commit a scene to pixels, but still be flexible and spontaneous. Master Fine Art photographer Vincent Versace has spent his career learning and teaching the art of perception and how to translate it into stunning images. In Welcome to Oz, he delves into what it means to approach digital photography cinematically, to use your perception, your camera, and Photoshop to capture the movement of life in a still image.

1 out of 5 stars Dust collector big time.........2007-09-24

A postprocessing photoshop book. But a bad one of its kind. The first example he uses is a portrait of an female actor he tries to make better in photoshop. It ends up with very very yellow skintones. Im surprised he didnt see it himself before publishing. He uses a lot of time, too much, explaining about selective focus done with gaussian blur and layermasks. Why not get a fast lens and save all that paintwork- it didnt take me to OZ!!

3 out of 5 stars 3rd Party Req. not mentioned.......2007-09-12

After much anticipation and excitement....This book requires third party plug-ins, to complete the lessons as described..only good for 15 days. Sorry to say I am disapointed because nowhere in the Descriptions, Editorial reviews etc... does it mention this oversight!!!. I'm feeling kinda deceived right about now!!..... made it to page 17.

5 out of 5 stars Not for the faint-hearted.......2007-08-27

In my opinion, this book is aimed squarely at the photographer aiming at exhibition quality work, with no concessions. Having said that, there is a lot of valuable information for others as well. It requires a willingness to push the philosophical boundaries of the ethics of manipulated image, because Versace's approach is to take multiple shots of the same subject from subtly diferent viewpoints, then combine them to produce a single image that matches his artistic vision. He is quoted as considering Photoshop an imagination enhancer, and says in his forward that one of his aims is to teach the reader to be able to make magic, starting at the point of capture. Indeed, this is what he proceeds to do. His methods require that you take pictures of subjects that move you, capture the image with spontaneity while being able to conceptualise the end result, and have advanced Photoshop skills. He then offers an insight into the ensuing conversation between photographer and image, with a great deal of the "how" and the "why" along the way. The final results are stunning, but the process is somewhat tortuous, and not for the faint-hearted. This is not your generic "how-to-do-it" Photoshop book, but a glimpse into what drives one man's quest for as near to perfection as possible. It wasn't what I expected - I bought it on the strength of the review in Photoshop User - and it won't be one of the books that lives by my Mac for constant reference. It will, however, be one to which I refer to be reminded of the potential of digital imaging towards which I might aspire for my art prints.
I gave it 5 stars because Versace succeeds in what he set out to do. It won't be for everyone, though.

4 out of 5 stars Versace is amazing.......2007-07-24

This book is excellent. Rather than writing another how to use Photoshop book, Vincent Versace teaches you WHY you use Photoshop and some of the key techniques that can make an incredible difference in your digital photography. If you already have a basic understanding of Photoshop then this book will help you kick it up a notch!

3 out of 5 stars No what I hoped for.......2007-07-23

This book is aimed at photographers who have never worked in a darkroom before. If you have started working as a photographer in digital, there is a lot to be learned from this book. However, if you know how to dodge and burn, and you know how to do it in Photoshop using layers, you will find nothing new here.

I am a huge Scott Kelby fan; however, this showed pretty much the same techiques as the first CS book, which I already have. So, if you have the first book ... don't buy the second!

.The Photoshop CS2 Book for Digital Photographers (Voices That Matter)

I found the book to be very user friendly, clearly written and put in a methodical order. The chapters are easy and fun to follow.

Although vey funny in the begining, I too found Scott Kelby's humour to be a bit much at times and also a little repetitious, but I guess his aim is to prevent the reader from getting bored with the technical stuff. So I was more than willing to put up with it.

The book is aimed at those with at least a basic knowledge of photography, I have been a profesional film photographer and once having made the move to digital I found the book to be fantastic.
It answered my every need.

A must on the shelf of all photoshop users, unless of course you know your stuff as well as Scott does.

5 out of 5 stars Another winner.......2007-09-19

Scott does Photoshop training right - quick, easy tutorials that elevate your abilities to negotiate the steep learning curve of this software. His sense of humor keeps it fun.

1 out of 5 stars Do Not Recommend.......2007-09-15

This is one of the most user-unnfriendly books I have ever used. The writer sometimes mixes up instructions on Mac versus on PC and that throws you off at every point. Also he is constantly assuming certain windows are already open for you or certain functions have already been activated. So he'll go "Press V" and "Press D" but nothing happens although apparently it was suppossed to make your background white (what does that even means!). So I am not recommending this book to anyone at all.

Book Description

Proving once and for all that standards-compliant design does not equal dull design, this inspiring tome uses examples from the landmark CSS Zen Garden site as the foundation for discussions on how to create beautiful, progressive CSS-based Web sites. By using the Zen Garden sites as examples of how CSS design techniques and approaches can be applied to specific Web challenges, authors Dave Shea and Molly Holzschlag provide an eye-opening look at the range of design methods made possible by CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). By the time you've finished perusing the volume, you'll have a new understanding of the graphically rich, fully accessible sites that CSS design facilitates. In sections on design, layout, imagery, typography, effects, and themes, Dave and Molly take you through every phase of the design process--from striking a sensible balance between text and graphics to creating eye-popping special effects (no scripting required).

.. but I fully expect to. Having followed the csszengarden site from nearly the beginning, I wouldn't miss it. I was learning css on my own when I came across the site.. being a visual artist, and unabashedly a "web DESIGNER" - I finally FINALLY felt that I had found my calling, my mecca on the pages of the site with all of the talented designers.

I learned SO MUCH downloading the css and trying my own stuff -- I actually credit the site for helping me to finally understand css and how it could be stretched - how it could be made to do the things I had always wanted to do. My kudos to everyone involved!

5 out of 5 stars The Zen of CSS Design.......2007-07-15

I'm not a "graphics" person. I struggle to understand creative design and how to build it in code. This book brought these elements together and really explained the process.

This is not a beginner's book on coding and design. It is more of an applications manual for someone who has worked with CSS. I was frequently looking at some area of a design and asking myself how, or why, did he do that? I don't think there was ever an example that left that question unanswered. If it wasn't explicit, there was always enough information and discussion to be able to figure it out. Including the code with the illustrations and explanations really tied the processes together.

This book will be kept on my 'A' references shelf. There is a detailed index and the example home pages were grouped in sections: Design, Layout, Imagery, Typography, Special Effects, and Reconstruction. Therefore, it will be easy to come back and locate relevant information.

A great book with excellent examples and descriptions on how to implement a CSS web solution.

This book is fantastic for layouts and suggestions. While it is not the simplist thing for the beginner it is very good for layouts and suggestions on ways to make your own CSS better and HTML lighter.

3 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2007-09-30

The book is actually pretty good. I was disappointed in the chapter on raw. I am new to this software and processing in raw format. What the book shows and my version 5 is completely different. I sent an email asking if they could explain the features since it is so different. I listed each, they said "I believe that Camera Raw was updated after the publication of our book." Also they informed me that they don't have a help desk. I have seen publications print corrections etc. that you are able to obtain. If raw is unimportant get it, if you want to learn about raw get something else.

Pros: The instructions are very clear. It is great book for beginners

Cons: This is a great book for beginner/intermediate user. If you look for advanced skills, then you may need some other books or resource.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Book for Photoshop Beginners.......2007-09-18

I've always used Microsoft Digital Image Pro, but found Photoshop Elements on clearance one day and decided to buy it. However, I kept going back to Digital Image Pro until I ordered this book. I am constantly referring to this book and slowly I've started to memorize the steps of my most favorite techniques. I've since upgraded to Photoshop CS2 and I still use this book. I either refer to the Table of Contents or the index to find what I'm looking for. The directions are listed step by step and are easy to understand. What I find very helpful are the "screen prints" of Elements so you can actually see what the author is referring to.

Some of my favorite tips are how to whiten teeth, how to change the color of an object, and how to change the background. There are many, many more tips in this book that I use often and love - these are a just a few examples.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent training book for sharepoint.......2007-08-01

Wow! I like the way Scot Hillier wrote this book. For experienced .net developers new to sharepoint, this book must be on your book shelf.

Scot Hillier walks you through fundamental aspects of Sharepoint, and shares his insightful thoughts along the path. At first, I do not understand why he solves problems using a variety of Microsoft technologies such as Visual Studio, InfoPath, Sharepoint Designer. To me, isn't that Visual Studio enough? Later, I realize that his way is the best since he picks the right tool for the right moment.

However, I do not see an enterprise sample in his book. I do expect that. Second, web part security is a tough topic. I expect more explanation. In the exercise, a medium trust level is used. According to the context of that chapter, a minimal trust level should be used.

5 out of 5 stars Very good guide and reference.......2007-06-07

This is a very good book from C# developers point of view. It covers most of the features that you want to customize in SharePoint. I like the presentation of ideas first and then exercises. It gives you a starting point on how to do it and it's up to you to go to a more complex level but at least it already gives you an idea what to look for.
I highly recommend it and it is easy to carry as it has only around 500 pages.
After this I will read the SharePoint Administrators Companion book by Bill English from Mindsharp.

5 out of 5 stars Great Work as Usual.......2007-04-10

I remember when I was learning MTS I bought Scot's book, MTS Programming With Visual Basic, and was truly amazed at what an easy read it was on such a technical subject. The reason is very clear. Scot knows what he is wrting about not only from a technical perspective, but also from a business perspective. His insights are priceless.

I thoroughly enjoyed his MOSS 2007 book and recommend it highly. Personally, I am very thankful that people like Scot take the time to write valuable books like this one. He makes up for other authors, who write huge books, that are painful to read and contribute nothing. One such author, and apparently his editors, does not even know that he is the "principal" not "principle" author of his book.

3 out of 5 stars Scratches the surface.......2007-04-10

I was assigned on a project where I should be using MOSS 2007. I had not used MOSS before and I needed a book that will give me a jump start. This book does that. For a beginner it is a very good book. However the instance you need more detailed information this book is not that useful.

5 out of 5 stars Great intro and mid-level work on SharePoint.......2007-04-05

This book's a critical resource if you're doing development on the SharePoint 2007 platform. The book hits a solid overview of the many features of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) and also gives you good dives into many of those same features. The book also deals with Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) and lays out differences between WSS and MOSS.

Hillier does a great job of covering the gory details of MOSS and hits the pros and cons of each feature. One example would be the hideous XML you have to hand-generate for working with the Business Data Catalog. He also does a great job discussing one of my recent pain points: workflow. Hillier lays out the strengths of the feature (workflow's power of process automation), then talks about the warts of the feature (design difficulties, numerous issues surrounding SharePoint Designer, etc.). Hillier is also honest about where MOSS features fall short, such as the note laying Hillier's preference for the K2 workflow engine over that of native Windows Workflow Foundation on MOSS.

The book is structured in a concise, highly usable fashion. Hillier discusses topics, then uses clearly written examples to walk you through the topic. All the examples are implemented in an environment that Hillier focuses an entire chapter on setting up. That chapter (#2) is one of the book's gems since it shows you how to get an entire development infrastructure set up and configured using Virtual Server to host three separate machines.

If you've already had exposure to MOSS then the book may not have a lot of extras for you. The dives into each feature aren't necessarily extremely deep dives, but they are good enough to get you well-versed with the concepts.

Hillier's book is an absolute must-have if you're looking to move in to any sort of work on the MOSS platform.

The old Quaker adage, "Let your life speak," spoke to author Parker J. Palmer when he was in his early 30s. It summoned him to a higher purpose, so he decided that henceforth he would live a nobler life. "I lined up the most elevated ideals I could find and set out to achieve them," he writes. "The results were rarely admirable, often laughable, and sometimes grotesque.... I had simply found a 'noble' way of living a life that was not my own, a life spent imitating heroes instead of listening to my heart."

Thirty years later, Palmer now understands that learning to let his life speak means "living the life that wants to live in me." It involves creating the kind of quiet, trusting conditions that allow a soul to speak its truth. It also means tuning out the noisy preconceived ideas about what a vocation should and shouldn't be so that we can better hear the call of our wild souls. There are no how-to formulas in this extremely unpretentious and well-written book, just fireside wisdom from an elder who is willing to share his mistakes and stories as he learned to live a life worth speaking about. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

With wisdom, compassion, and gentle humor, Parker J. Palmer invites us to listen to the inner teacher and follow its leadings toward a sense of meaning and purpose. Telling stories from his own life and the lives of others who have made a difference, he shares insights gained from darkness and depression as well as fulfillment and joy, illuminating a pathway toward vocation for all who seek the true calling of their lives.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent and Inspiring Book!.......2007-06-25

This is an excellent book for reading and reflecting on life. The words will grip your inner soul and move you to a higher state of thinking and consciousness. Along the way, the author uses poetry to awaken the spirit. This book is real and has practical applications regarding life for almost everyone. I heard the author speak at Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, regarding education and he is an excellent speaker. This is an educator who removes the secret veil, exposes what life is about, and the level of aspiration we should strive for. I highly recommend this book. Other excellent books to read are: "Trilogy Moments for the Mind, Body and Soul," "The language of Poetry Forms" by Tree Good, and "Everyday Miracles" by Okubo.

4 out of 5 stars Spiritual self-reflection.......2007-03-25

Palmer's book would be ideal for a rainy day read or for taking on a private retreat. He shares much learning from his life experiences. It is not a book about doing. Rather, it is a way to be integrated in one's living. One can learn to listen to their inner voice by what goes well and by recognizing one's limitations. Much food for thought.

5 out of 5 stars Let Your Life Speak: Listening for the Voice of Vocation.......2007-03-10

Parker Palmer does a wonderful job in a concise why of providing us a guide to how we can learn to value our own experiences and truly listen to our inner voice. Listen in such a way as to be guided by what we are sensing and felling to help us speak through our life work and work life in ways that are self fulfilling and enriching. A very thought provoking and touching look at his own inner journey.

4 out of 5 stars calling as a gift to receive not a goal to achieve.......2007-01-18

Here is a book that I wish I had read twenty years ago on that perennial Christian conundrum faced by so many: what is God's will for me in my vocational life? I hasten to add that I am not sure that at that stage of my life I could or would have understood its wisdom. For the most part Christians try to answer this question about God's vocational guidance by going "outside" of ourselves to external matters like my skills, the advice of others, perhaps some tests, and so on. But from his Quaker tradition Palmer urges us to go "inside" ourselves to matters of the heart. When we pursue the former path a "false" self often follows the expectations that others have of us and so distorts the "true" self. Vocation, in short, is not "a goal that I pursue. It means a calling that I hear" (p. 4) or "a gift to be received" (p. 10). We discover this call or gift, writes Palmer, by listening to our life, by discovering the true self God made each of us to be, rather than by soliciting the acceptance and approval of others about what we "ought" to do. Palmer is a gifted story teller and writer, and shares liberally from his own vocational pilgrimage, warts and all. Entire chapters on clinical depression and "when way closes" (a Quaker aphorism) were helpful. A final chapter uses the seasons as a metaphor for the vocational life, reminding us as we move inevitably through fall, winter, spring and summer that, contrary to all culture tells us, we do not only "manufacture" our life, but would do well to "grow" it.

5 out of 5 stars An indispensable resource.......2007-10-01

A person can drown in the sheer volume of CSS information available in print and on the web. In my quest to learn the ins and outs of CSS, I found plenty of primers, tutorials, how-to articles and resource sites. I did not find a unifying document that would allow me to assemble all of that information into the knowledge needed to use CSS effectively until I found this book. The author has done a fine job of bringing the underlying tenets of CSS and XHTML together in a way that makes all the other sources make perfect sense. He also writes in a way that shows he is smart and writing to smart people. It may not be perfect, but it is extremely useful, even indispensable. As the 2d edition will be available November 13, this edition is probably best checked from the library. But if you are new to CSS, this book is must-read material.

5 out of 5 stars Great seller.......2007-08-31

Great seller book arrived as fast as amazon 2 day shipping. The book itself was in excellent condition, I will buy something from this seller in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to follow.......2007-07-09

This book is easy to follow and gets into the nitty gritty of css. You'll be coding in no time, and will understand why you're doing what you're doing. I love it. It's so informative, and has given me the confidence to really run with css.

4 out of 5 stars This is a great book!.......2007-06-01

I'm currently taking a CSS class online and often find myself scratching my head witht the 2 books required for the class - this NOT being one of them - I picked this one up on my own and now it's like - "Oh, so that's what those other books meant" - this one is easy to follow and understand - I'm a designer by trade - so any type of code makes my head hurt - this books makes it so much easier!

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Start to CSS.......2007-03-30

I have bought and read many HTML books over the years in an attempt to write even a simple web page or two, but with little success. HTML always seemed very clumsy and totally illogical. Layout code seemed to be repeated time and time again and could hardly be seen amongst the content (and vise versa). Then along came CSS - this, I thought, must be the way to do it!

A few more books on CSS later (Amazon are making a fortune out of me) but still no headway. The reason, I decided, was that all the books I had read were written by programmers (no disrespect, I do a bit myself). What I needed was a book written by a designer, someone who can tie together the XHTML and CSS from a designer's viewpoint but in a structured and logical way.

Enter Charles Wyke-Smith and Stylin' with CSS.

If any of the above description fits you, then this book is what you're looking for. The treatment is logical, well paced and above all relevant. It is written by someone who understands page design and shows you how to setup a descent web site using CSS. OK there are more typos in the first print than there should be, but they shouldn't throw you off course.

It is not the definitive design manual - it never pretends to be. It is an excellent book to start you on the right path to understanding CSS and using it correctly. I whole heartedly recommend it.

Book Description

As the Web evolves to incorporate new standards and the latest browsers offer new possibilities for creative design, the art of creating Web sites is also changing. Few Web designers are experienced programmers, and as a result, working with semantic markup and CSS can create roadblocks to achieving truly beautiful designs using all the resources available. Add to this the pressures of presenting exceptional design to clients and employers, without compromising efficient workflow, and the challenge deepens for those working in a fast-paced environment. As someone who understands these complexities firsthand, author and designer Andy Clarke offers visual designers a progressive approach to creating artistic, usable, and accessible sites using transcendent CSS.

In this groundbreaking book, you’ll discover how to implement highly original designs through visual demonstrations of the creative possibilities using markup and CSS. You’ll learn to use a new design workflow, build prototypes that work well for designers and all team members, use grids effectively, visualize markup, and discover every phase of the transcendent design process, from working with the latest browsers to incorporating CSS3 to collaborating with team members effectively, and much more.

Written and edited by Web design and CSS luminaries Andy Clarke and Molly E. Holzschlag, Transcending CSS: The Fine Art of Web Design
• Uses a visual approach to help you learn coding techniques
• Includes numerous examples of world-class Web sites, photography, and other inspirations that give designers ideas for visualizing their code
• Offers early previews of technical advances in new Web browsers and of the emerging CSS3 specification.

5 out of 5 stars I'd Say... this book is wonderfull!.......2007-10-04

I bought this book under an advice I took from a blog... I thought... what the heck... I know CSS, but the plain vanilla... I have read a technical book till the end (took me almost a year) and I need something different.

I was surprised...this one is a blast to read, simply put, a delightful reading, even to take it to bed :) (Depending on the company)

Great visual quality, simple examples, and the usual obnoxious tone I tend to admire in brits, even though they don't really have the need for it ;)

If Andy Clarke is as "direct" in is classes as he is in the book, then his seminars must also be a blast to tend to, the kind of classes you don't take notes...because you don't need to.

Finally I understood what meaningful and semantic CSS are... and found out that I was applying all the technicalities correctly, but skipping the basics of its usage (I tend to confuse this word with sausage) all the way!

Attention: Too many pictures of food... in bed they tend to produce some undesired urges to get up and raid the refrigerator with strange results (Depending on the company)

5 out of 5 stars Great Buy --- Best web design book yet.......2007-09-06

I haven't been involved in too many designs as I am more prone to actual development coding (backend scripting). However after taking a new position that has me waist deep in both worlds I knew I needed to start spending more time understanding design aspects, process, progression, concepts, etc. This book saved the proverbial "day" for me.

Andy Clarke's masterpiece gave me an indepth view of so many different areas of web design it was hard to put down and not re-read immediately after finishing it the first time! I constantly refer back to this book for inspiration. It was written in a way that helps trigger your thought processes about how his examples and concepts pertain to your own work or work you might want to do in the future.

Excellent read and I look forward to reading more work from Clarke.

3 out of 5 stars Good book, but frustrating at times........2007-08-24

Altogether this is a great book, especially the design theory, grids, workflow, and css principles, but the part where you jump into the hands on coding is poor, missing files from the download section of the site, plus parts of the coding examples that seem to tell you too input some css rules, then 2 pages later those rules are not there anymore without telling the reader, very confusing, you find yourself searching around the internet for support, but to not much avail, in the end I just gave up on the hands on section on this book, and just read the other parts, but these parts are good enough on there own to stop me from returning this book.. such a shame too, was really enjoying the writing style of Andy Clarke, seems the proof readers let him down :(.

5 out of 5 stars Way more than pretty pictures........2007-08-15

"Transcending CSS" is its own example of the next evolutionary step in writing about web design. Created for designers, by designers, they are not stingy with the code needed to develop the beautiful, functional layouts. I bought this book as a "reward" for launching my first CSS-based design for a client, and it's already paid for itself by showing me how to develop my CSS skill set for current and future clients.

1 out of 5 stars This book isn't really viable in today's world.......2007-08-11

This book I thought was a pretty nice, awesome looking book, and it is...

...Until he starts getting into the new CSS standard, which really doesn't help anyone on today's browsers, therefore isn't a really viable solution for now. This will be a great book in like a year or 2, but for anyone who really wants to be able to design CSS for websites in all browsers (Explorer, Firefox, etc) then this is not your book.

This guy should have stuck to the current standard, he would of been much better off.

5 out of 5 stars Great Photoshop book for photographers.......2007-10-04

I've been working with Photoshop for several years and have recently purchased this book. I think that the reader should have a working knowledge of Photoshop before using this book because it assumes you understand the basics. Ms. Eismann provides excellent instructions and downloadable photos on which to work. I highly recommend this book for photographers interested in retouching old photos or for those who want to extend their Photoshop techniques.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2007-09-11

I can only be enthusiastic when it comes to this book. The instructions and examples are very down to earth and clear. Just what I was looking for. As a result I then purchased Katrin's other book "Masking & Compositing" or as she says it should have been "Selecting, Masking & Compositing". I have purchased several books on Photoshop CS3 now and have read them all from cover to cover. Katrin's M&C book was written for CS - but I found it very instructive even when used with CS3.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable Teacher.......2007-08-29

Katrin Eismann is nothing short of a genius. I have her DVD, and what she can do for someone serious about learning restoration and repair is second to none.

5 out of 5 stars Always Learning.......2007-08-16

I took a one day Adobe Photoshop CS2 class. The instructor recommended this book for extra training. Photoshop is a program you can study for years and still have tons more to learn . This book gives you a great headstart. It's easy to follow and contains a great deal of usefull information. It's the kind of book you read cover to cover but it's also a good reference book. It's nice to be able to go at your own pace.
