Acoustic Masters Series: Bob Brozman's Bottleneck Blues Guitar.......2007-02-21
I have been playing for over 30 years, this is the best book on Bottleneck blues guitar. It is also alot of fun to play.
Very good place to start.......2003-11-09
I'm an intermediate player who bought 3 books to learn slide from.
This is the best of the bunch. The book covers a lot of ground but
the basics are here as well. Well spaced info and a good CD to
learn from. Other good books on blues (but not slide per se) are the Kenny Sultan series - they are not as hard as the Grossman and Mann books
Worth the $.......2002-08-13
I'm a metal guitarist (the real stuff, Maiden, Morbid Angel, Slayer style metal) that dabbles in jazz and fingerstyle.
I've loved Robert Johnson's country style blues forever and this book introduced me to the joys of playing slide guitar in open G in just two days! I can already play enough stuff to sound like I know what I'm doing.
Virtuoso slide instruction.......2000-08-23
Bob Brozman, in addition to being a certified ethnomusicologist and world expert on the National resonator guitar has compiled a mother lode of slide and rhythm techniques in the Country Blues style.Although at his own admission Brozman doesn't "play Robert Johnson like Robert Johnson.." in recordings or live venues he does easily teach the style of Johnson flawlessly in rhythm, phrase and slide technique. In addition he quotes and instructs from the other Country Blues giants..Charlie Patton, Willie Brown as well as including his own trademark licks. The rhythmic instruction included is essential learning for this style. Included CD is excellent in detail and example. A must have for anyone interested in this style

Celtic Guitar with CD (Audio) (Acoustic Masters).......2007-02-21
This book has excellent arrangements for the guitar regarding Celtic music. It also enjoyable to play, fingerings are realistic and not impossible to play like some other arrangements I have came across over the years.
Great tune book - you won't be disappinted!!!.......2007-01-06
I'm a guitar teacher
The book is not for begginers but if you have a good right hand technic
and reading tabs or and notes this is a great book with wonderful irish tunes.
most of the tunes are in standart tunning and some in drop D and some in special tunning.
some of the tunes sounds like a classical pieces not so irish but beautiful on their own right.
the notes are an exact transcription of the wonderfull CD.
any one who buy this book and learn it good would have a great recital to perform with. buy this book cause this author is a great musician and teacher!
I love and hate this book.......2004-04-21
I love it because it is thorough and precise. The tab is accurate (it isn't always with some books) and the music notation complete. There is even a key at the top of the page to give you the tuning if it is altered. The tutorial, while sounding a little sterile is very clear and extremely well executed. Other reviewers, I believe, are understating the level of difficulty somewhat. Having studied classical guitar, I found the pieces here well within reach, but I find it a stretch to say that they would be aproachable by a beginner, even an advanced one. Now, why I hate it: From reading Weiser's (the author) bio I learned that he is a classically-trained guitarist only a few degrees separated from Segovia himself (impressive)and that his intention with his arrangements of Celtic music is to foster greater acceptance of it in classical circles. That's a noble enough cause, but when I reflect upon the arrangements here I have to say that some of them are almost too Baroque-sounding for my finger-picked, steel-strung and down-tuned taste. If, for example, you were looking for a John Renbourne or Martin Simpson-type of experience with this book, you may be disappointed. I think not, though. Predispositions aside, his version of Jock O'Hazelden is very nice and will fall quickly under your fingers. His Morrison's Jig is spot-on how a fiddle tune should sound and his Carrickfergus is richly harmonized. I've returned to this book again and again. If you want to learn some Celtic music for guitar, the sheer volume of material contained here makes it worth the investment.
Pleasure for the Taking.......2002-08-08
As I've been teaching myself to play the guitar over the past two years, I've purchased and used many books of music. I've found that Celtic music is pleasurable for me to play. This is my favorite music book so far. It is very well done. There is a nice variety of songs, slow and fast, happy and sad. One of the pleasures of this music is the emotion felt in playing certain selections.
The range of difficulty is from fairly easy to moderately hard. This is a book that can help you grow in skill while having fun and making a joyful noise. I appreciate that every song has both notation and tablature. Most of the pieces are in standard tuning. Many are in drop D tuning and there is a section of DADGAD songs.
I don't think that the author(s) or editor(s) are credited, which is a shame because I'd like to buy more books from the same person or team.
Beautiful to hear and fun to play.......2002-04-12
An excellent collection of Celtic tunes comprise this book/cd set. It is not a "method" or "how-to-play" celtic guitar book but if you're looking for fingerstyle celtic repertoire this is a great place to start. Most pieces are played with standard or drop D tuning but 6 use DADGAD tuning. They all should be within reach of any advanced beginner to intermediate guitarist as many are played within the first four frets - some move higher up the neck and one piece reaches up to the 12th fret. For those who prefer tablature each instrumental is given in both tab and standard notation. The cd helps insure the player is interpreting the written music as the author meant. Overall the selection of instrumentals is high - everything from reels, jigs, airs, waltzes, marches and hornpipe to arrangements of O'Carolan tunes are here. Definitely a two-thumbs up.

Improve Your Skill By Stretching Yourself.......2007-07-13
First of all, I have to agree with "J" and disagree with Paul. Me and my guitar buddies have used this book extensively. We have found it to be VERY accurate. For example, on "Self Portrait" I only found two very small places that I disagreed with the fingering. Me and my friends have found this book to be "spot on" in almost all cases.
Many fingerstyle guitar players will find these songs beyond their abilities. My advice to you is to take these songs as projects and learn them over time. You can't get better unless you strech yourself. The other advice: Many guitar players become discouraged because they want to be able to start a recording of the song and play along with it. They end up getting frustrated and quit. But, many of Doyle's songs still sound GREAT when played at a slower tempo and become much more easy to play. For example, I can learn on of Doyle's songs in 1-3 monthes of practice, and it will sound pretty good, but I usually am not able to play that song at full tempo until after 1 year. Also if there is tough spot you can't play, skip it and learn the rest of the song and then come back to it.
I like to write songs and I have found that Doyle has influenced my playing probably more than anyone else. When you mix his ideas along with some Juber, Gerhard, and others, you then come up with your own sound which is a composite of all the people you have studied.
On a comical note: I had email John Chappel (the man that transcribed the music for this book). I had some questions on a couple of small places where I disagreed with the tab. In his response he told me of a phone call he had received from Doyle earlier. Aparently Doyle had started playing one of his songs differently and had forgot how he played it when he originally wrote it. He called John and asked, "Hey John can you show me how to play that song I wrote. I forgot how."
This book is a tribute to one of the greatest fingerstyle legends of all time. It was Doyle Dykes that was asked to play guitar at Chet Atkins funeral. That alone speaks volumes to me about his ability.
A masterpiece!.......2006-08-17
I must disagree with Paul's review; my experience with this book+CD is quite different. The tablature in the book I have accurately matches the recordings on the CD. Page three of the book presents an index of seventeen songs, listing the page # for the written music and the corresponding CD track #. It is a testimony to Jon Chappell's skill as a musician that he is able to accurately capture the nuances of Dykes' beautiful compositions and expert performances.
Based on my experience with the book so far (learning tracks 1 and 13) the quality of the recordings and the accuracy of the book are both EXCELLENT! In fact, the recordings are so good that I must assume the seventeen individual tracks are taken directly from Dykes' albums! If not, this CD should be packaged and sold by itself. There's no discussion, no metronome, no simplified phrasing -- just 17 tracks of Doyle Dykes music.
Now, the music not easy to learn. After all, this is fingerpicking at its highest level, but as best as I can tell (and play) the tab for Angel's Desire (pg 12, CD track #1) and The Road Back Home (pg 102, track #13) is spot on.
If you consider the price of this book+cd is less expensive than a half-hour of private instruction by a tutor, this is the deal of the century! I'm confident that if you buy the book and take the time to work through a tune or two (be patient, it *can* be done) you'll emerge a much better musician for the effort. And even if you only learn to play a few phrases well, you have a set of SEVENTEEN beautiful recordings of Dykes' music for just a bit more than you'd pay for a simple CD!
Don't hesitate to buy this one, but be warned -- you'll discover you also 'need' a better guitar! :) It's all there -- now it's up to you. Go practice.
[Two things I'd recommend in addition to this book. 1) a metronome. 2) software to slow down the recorded music to a slower speed without changing the pitch so you can hear every note and play along at the reduced tempo. "Amazing Slow Downer" (goofy name, great product) is my favorite although there are many software packages available to do this and even standalone CD players with this feature.]
CD does not match written music.......2006-04-20
I just received this book of Dykes music and the accompaning CD. Dykes is obviously awesome, and I realize I can't play like him with any amount of work. But I bought the book to try and learn a bit of his technique. I assumed the CD that came with it would be him playing the songs in the book, so I could listen to how it is SUPPOSED to sound. The stuff on the CD is great but only 1 cut corresponds to what the book charts.
Wouldn't one assume that an instructional book that comes with a CD would have the same music on both, so you could learn??
So I am slightly miffed, but as I say the stuff on the CD is great.
I just say, if you are going to sell a book of music with a CD, make the CD match the sheet music/tablature.
Amazing.......2005-08-11
This book is amazingly easly to understand and practice with the cd. I think it is a great buy!!!

Fingerstyle Wonder.......2005-10-28
I agree with the previous reviewer, and would emphasize that these are not beginner's arrangements, either in tab or notes. That said, they are terrific fingerpicking versions. The real wizard is Mark Hanson for allowing guitarists to share in this magical score.
Great Harold Arlen tunes for beginning & intermediate guitar.......2002-06-13
Mark Hanson has done a fine job of arranging the original orchestrations for fingerstyle guitar. Some of it is approachable by the advanced beginner; intermediate guitarists should find their efforts rewarded with a fun little repetoire which offers room for musical expression. (There are some fairly tricky harmonics.) The more advanced guitarist can develop a suite with much charm and a great deal of humor.
Mark's study notes anticipate most technical problems the student will encounter. It would have been helpful if they were printed with each piece instead of in their own section. As usual, the CD is a great study aid. CDs with music books are the greatest thing since the pull tab. Oh, and I wish they'd printed Yip Harburg's wonderful lyrics somewhere. In TAB and standard notation.

Know what you are getting.......2006-11-03
This book is designed to be a primer on getting the guitar sound of several famous players in the world of acoustic rock. It features a chapter on each of the players it designates, most of which are fairly obvious choices, though the inclusion of R.E.M.'s Peter Buck was a pleasant surprise and the primary reason for my purchasing it.
Each chapter includes four main features. First, there is a personal biography with information about the player's life and a rock profile that chronicles the player's journey to fame. Second, there is a section on the player's style, explaining how it is that each gets his particular sound. Third, there is something akin to a box score in the "quick look" box that runs down the player's gear, strings, finger/plectrum style, string action height, and so on. Finally, each chapter ends with a "play like them" section (normally about one page) of sound-alike riffs. The book also includes a useful preface about the how to acquire these sounds by using mic-ing techniques specific to acoustic guitar.
Most of the information made available in the book is of the sort that only people who play already would enjoy; it is by no means written for new learners. While some of the information is interesting (like the mic-placement preface), it is probably too thin to be of any use to people who want to learn how to mic guitars. You'd be better off buying a book that is about just microphones. Also, the sound-alike riffs, while interesting, by no means will teach you how to play just like these guys. You will get a taste of what makes James Taylor himself, but you will certainly not be copping any of his dates any time soon.
That isn't to say the book is a wash. I would add that what makes this book worthy of five stars is that there is a very narrow segment of guitar players of a certain skill level that will think this book is great, as I did. These are the players who have gotten out of the basic guitar books and want to explore music that they like. For example, the sound-alike riffs are good, short practices on playing new music because they are not direct copies of known songs; on the other hand, an advanced player would simply be able to buy a book of a particular players songs and dissect them him/herself. The microphone section is just enough of an intro into getting your guitar on tape that it should satisfy the advanced beginner's curiosity to see if they want to get more detailed books on home recording. And finally, the biographical information (by far the largest chunk of the book taken altogether) is the kind of fun-fact stuff to keep a new player interested and supply hints for trying new things. And, the inclusion of players people might not immediately categorize as "acoustic" (like Pete Townshend, just for one) makes for a book with lots of room to explore. Not to mention the action pose photos.
As I said, I just happened to be that player who would benefit from this approach and was extremely satisfied with the book. And what is more, there are a number of other books in the "Masters" series. Piquing your interest in the style of music you or a newer player you know might want to investigate is just a matter of finding the right one.
Great Buy.......2006-06-27
Really cool book that includes artist biographies, favorite acoustic guitars, method explanations, and more. The mini lessons that are tabbed out and are on the CD are a great learning technique...they give the reader a window into the minds of these great artists.
Highly informative and great playing!.......2003-11-11
If you're a practicing guitarist, this book will really help your chops--it's been terrific for my acoustic playing.
Lots of good info, easy-to-understand music examples and a great CD. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
One of the better Dylan song books I've found.......2006-10-18
In general, there are two types of song books: Those that dumb down the music and those that try to faithfully transcribe the music at hand. This book falls into the latter camp.
The written music is for guitars that use the treble clef. In a few cases this involves more than one guitar -- up to three. So, no bass guitar. There is harmonica music on a few songs. Lyrics are on all songs.
Chord diagrams for each song are provided, but only once -- they are listed by the song title. Once you get into the written music, this book only has the chord name above the staff. (They do not list fingerings for the chords, either.) There is Tab.
Below I've listed the songs in the book. There is about a 50/50 split between strumming songs and finger-picking songs. As you can see, they're all over the Dylan map, on 14 different albums:
Baby, Let Me Follow You Down
Ballad of Hollis Brown
Blood in My Eyes
Buckets of Rain
Don't Think Twice, It's All Right
4th Time Around
Girl From the North Country
I Don't Believe You
I Shall Be Released
If You See Her, Say Hello
Just Like a Woman
Lay Lady Lay
One Too Many Mornings
Po' Boy
Shooting Star
Tangled Up in Blue
Things Have Changed
Visions of Johanna
You're a Big Girl Now
If you're not a big Dylan fan, you should know that this is not a "radio Dylan / greatest hits" song book. I like Bob's music, and I'm happy with the song selection, but a casual music listener might only recognize a couple of the songs.
I won't comment on the overall accuracy of the music, except it "looks good to me." I am new to guitar (4 months in), and I can really only play one song from this book, today, and that one follows the studio album as well as I can tell.

No better of a Book Possible.......2007-06-13
The Acoustic Masters for Guitar: Paul Simon is a book for any age or for any guitar level. The book features in depth tabs, that correlate with some of Simon's most famous post-Simon and Garfunkel work. Songs like Duncan, Take Me to the Mardi Gras, Something So Right and 50 Ways to Lose Your Lover.
The book is great for even piano players. The chords match well with the treble clef guitar parts making it easy for piano players to play along to. In no other source, have I found a 100% accurate tablature and notation for one Simon's most beautiful songs: Armistice Day. The price of this book is very cheap, considering that it makes for great acoustic guitar exercices, a great selection of songs to play, good chord workouts and just to appreciate the intricacy and the complexity of Simon's guitar playing and songwriting.
Highly Recommended.

Just what I was looking for.......2004-04-14
I almost never write reviews, but I felt compelled to for this book. I just started playing the violin (fiddle) a little while ago, and enjoy practicing fun tunes that are a little more challenging than "Mary Had A Little Lamb." Problem is, I can't play them very well unless I know what they are supposed to sound like. This book has a LOT of cool classic fiddle songs, each arranged with both beginner and advanced versions. I listen to the CD to know what the song sounds like, then play it for myself. I am having a GREAT time practicing. LOVE IT LOVE IT. I recently purchased seven other books that I hoped would be as good as this, but they don't come close. Now I need one that has beginner and advanced versions of classic classical tunes (WITH a CD!) THANK YOU TO THE AUTHORS!
An excellent fiddle music sampler........2003-10-14
This book is a valuable resource for anyone from beginner to intermediate who wants to play the fiddle, as it contains quite a few fiddle classics. I particularly like the range of very simple tunes to really challenging pieces. Most pieces are presented in a simple form, and then repeated with more challenging versions. The accompanying CD demonstrates each piece in the book, so that you can hear what the tune is supposed to sound like. There are over seventy tracks, but each piece is quite short.
What it is NOT: This is not a book that will teach you how to play a violin - it assumes you have basic skills. The CD does not have beautifully arranged songs - it just has the fiddle playing, along with a guitar strumming occasionally to help keep the beat.
I have been taking lessons for only a few months, but there are a few pieces I can follow easily, and I see this book will be useful to me for a long time coming.
