5 out of 5 stars A Context the Opposite of What We're Told .......2007-08-17

As an ex-international banker who quit banking for the same reasons John Perkins quit being an Economic Hit Man, I can vouch for the truth of every essay in this fine book. The underlying truth is: the world is increasingly run by the corporatocracy, and it has negligible concern for either the poor countries it purports to help nor the environment in which it functions. The truth is the opposite of what we would like and pretend to be true. And the corporatocracy doesn't just behave as it does in foreign, underdeveloped countries, it behaves the exact same way here at home. The mortgage scandle is the same kind of hustle - selling bad debt to unsophisticated borrowers and investors. The only difference is that the poor people who default on their mortgages don't have natural resources the lenders can now take. Fascism redux.

This is a brilliant book. One can already see how the corporatocracy is ignoring it. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

4 out of 5 stars The Dark Underbelly of International Economics.......2007-06-27

In CONFESSIONS OF AN ECONOMIC HIT MAN, John Perkins outlined his 20-year career as agent of the government and multinational corporations as they attempted to (and succeeded in) exploiting lesser-developed countries. That book, published by Berrett-Koehler in 2004, painted a rather gloomy picture of the dark side of globalization - in theory, a worthy endeavor.

A GAME AS OLD AS EMPIRE, edited by Steven Hiatt with an introduction by Mr. Perkins, continues the story of this exploitation, abuse, and waste in the name of "globalization." Let me say - as an aside - that I remain a proponent of globalization within the context of responsible stewardship. Removing barriers to trade, offering educational, vocational, and economic opportunities to men and women of all nations, is a good thing. Done properly, economic development and stewardship offers the possibility of true societal progress, ennobling humanity, enriching lives, nurturing the environment and increasing business activity and profits.

Unfortunately, the reality is far different from the ideal. The shortsightedness and greed of political and leaders - focused only on personal enrichment or the next quarter's operating results - leads to a culture of global exploitation. The pattern is familiar: special interests descend like locusts, consume everything in their path, and then move on, leaving a wake of destruction, degradation, and despair.

The book presents a compelling exploration of these economic and human abuses through other voices, most of those voices from men and women that participated for a time in the dance of exploitation for their temporal masters. The individual essays focus on a number of issues ranging from the stranglehold of foreign debt, the culture of ineptitude and corruption in many aspects of international banking, and the unconscionable extraction of natural resources (as in the Congo) at the high cost of human life and economic prosperity.

A GAME AS OLD AS EMPIRE is expectedly one-sided in that it shows only the abuse and corruption of international economics. There are many businesses that operate with high-principles and integrity (while maintaining high earnings for both its management as well as other constituents). However, the book serves an important purpose in that it shows that all is not sunshine and roses in the global economy. There is corruption, waste, incompetence, and short-sightedness that is unacceptable from not only a human standpoint, but from a business valuation perspective as well. I would recommend this book to anyone who seeks to undertake an intelligent study of the state of international economics in the real world.

5 out of 5 stars A revealing survey.......2007-05-10

A GAME AS OLD AS EMPIRE: THE SECRET WORLD OF ECONOMIC HIT MEN AND THE WEB OF GLOBAL CORRUPTION comes from the author of the best-selling CONFESSIONS OF AN ECONOMIC HIT MAN and expands upon the prior book's theme. Where CONFESSIONS was fueled by the author's revelations of economic secrets, A GAME AS OLD AS EMPIRE is joined by other journalists and investigators who tell their own stories of a world-wide web of deliberate corruption, even narrowing topics down to specific countries and how they've been subverted. The result is a revealing survey which expands well upon the popular theme of CONFESSIONS and which deserves a spot in any academic or community library's business, economics, or social issues collection.

5 out of 5 stars A Story that Deserves to be Told.......2007-05-08

This book should be mandatory reading for college students. Through the various essays--written by real people involved in the various aspects of modern empire--the reader gains an understanding of the real work (and damage) done by multilateral development agencies, offshore banks, and global trade organizations. If we want to build a better world and a better future for our children, it is critical we all understand how these various institutions of the global elite affect the global poor.

4 out of 5 stars Weighty, serious reading.......2007-04-29

Well, I certainly can't add more to the details of the book than what C. Middleton said, but I would like to say a few words comparing this to the first book, since in many ways it is the successor to John Perkins' entertaining first-person tale, "Economic Hitman".

"Old As Empire" is a collection of stories reporting on the global economic condition that are not far from the type of writing you might see read in Foreign Affairs magazine or Noam Chomsky's books. The tales, which are told in the third-person as often as the first, have little entertainment value; they're almost pure information, revelations of capitalist corruption and warlord dominance that are contemporary and all too relevant in exposing how the world actually works.

If "EHM" felt a bit light and historic, this collection of stories is weighty and newsworthy - but don't go looking for a spy angle on this one. If you're a serious foreign newshound, this is good stuff - but for all the talk of revealing personal stories about "other EHM's", there really aren't many - it's mostly about corruption at the company and government level, rather than a collection of James Bonds doing the bidding of their corporate masters like EHM was.

Book Description

A riveting exposé of international corruption—and what we can do about it, from the author of Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, which spent over a year on the New York Times bestseller list.

In his stunning memoir, Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, John Perkins detailed his former role as an “economic hit man” in the international corporate skullduggery of a de facto American Empire. This riveting, behind-the-scenes exposé unfolded like a cinematic blockbuster told through the eyes of a man who once helped shape that empire. Now, in The Secret History of the American Empire, Perkins zeroes in on hot spots around the world and, drawing on interviews with other hit men, jackals, reporters, and activists, examines the current geopolitical crisis. Instability is the norm: It's clear that the world we've created is dangerous and no longer sustainable. How did we get here? Who's responsible? What good have we done and at what cost? And what can we do to change things for the next generations? Addressing these questions and more, Perkins reveals the secret history behind the events that have created the American Empire, including:

• The current Latin-American revolution and its lessons for democracy
• How the “defeats” in Vietnam and Iraq benefited big business
• The role of Israel as “Fortress America” in the Middle East
• Tragic repercussions of the IMF's “Asian Economic Collapse”
• U.S. blunders in Tibet, Congo, Lebanon, and Venezuela
• Jackal (CIA operatives) forays to assassinate democratic presidents

From the U.S. military in Iraq to infrastructure development in Indonesia, from Peace Corps volunteers in Africa to jackals in Venezuela, Perkins exposes a conspiracy of corruption that has fueled instability and anti-Americanism around the globe. Alarming yet hopeful, this book provides a compassionate plan to reimagine our world.

2 out of 5 stars Not What I expected.......2007-09-25

I picked this book up expecting it to be a direct explanation of how the international monetary system works. I was greatly disappointed to find it's just a memoir of the author's experiences, with no hard facts, and innuendos about how horrible the US is, how many people paid him not to write this book, how many threats he's received, etc. The author spends extensive time talking about specific experiences with famous people, preening himself as an important person, and absolutely no time discussing hard facts. He spends an entire chapter talking about how he was offered a controlling position in an energy company.

The author has no clue what Biblical Christianity is, based on his descriptions (it's not about the "social gospel," no matter what church happens to believe that--anyone who bothers to read the actual Bible can tell you that). He praises Che, and says Che was smeared as a communist--in reality, I don't know of anyone who's bothered by Che's communism, but rather by his terrorism, and slaughtering of thousands of people for no particular reason--the very people he claimed to be "fighting for."

Overall, very short on facts, very much about "me," and very disappointing.

2 out of 5 stars Mr Tom Clancy goes to Harvard Business School.......2007-09-12

John Perkins' The Secret History of the American Empire is not scholarly "history". History here is just the backdrop. It is the frame story for a lyrical ballad on global corporatism. Perkins commences: "More than half the world's population lives on less than two dollars a day; 24,000 people die each day through hunger and hunger-related diseases; the United States has 5% of the world's population but consumes 25% of the world's resources; the United States' military is preeminent as is the English language; the United States has controlling interest in both the World Bank (16%) and the International Monetary Fund (17%)". (In short, the United States is ideally positioned to exploit all hungering peoples and their rich resources.) Global corporatism's reliance on "jackals" (assassins) and "geishas" (professional escorts) is mentioned, also. Clearly, Perkins' "history" is the proverbial yesterday's paper. It's nothing new. What makes the book engaging, however, is the entrance into global corporatism of a young man emerging from teen angst determined to snare more women and earn more cash (by Perkins' admission) than the high school football team captain. Perkins draws you in at once:

"Confessions of an Economic Hit Man [Perkins' previous work] became my insurance policy; the jackals knew that if anything unusual happened to me, sales of the book would skyrocket" (page xv).

The book's premise mirrors the premise of numerous, far more scholarly works (eg, Ezra Pound's Cantos, and Naomi Klein's Shock Capitalism): "Most US citizens are not aware that national disasters are like wars: They are highly profitable for business" (page 48).

Global backdrop and premise aside, it is hard to tell whether the lyric personal escapades chronicled in this book are fictional. The engaging style is highly reminiscent of science fiction author Roger Zelazny. Indeed, if John Perkins eventually declares this book to be as fictional as Roger Zelazny's sci-fi classic Lord of Light it will be no surprise. For example, Perkins reports that his life of dark corporate skullduggery turned completely around after a chance meeting seated next to His Holiness the Thirteenth Dalai Lama on a 737 commercial flight:

"I made a vow right then and there that I would devote the rest of my life to turning things around" (page 65).

If not true, certainly a fine plot twist. And while it is totally believable a good heart-to-heart with His Holiness might indeed raise a dead soul ghoulishly serving global corporatism to the life more abundant - and while it would be unkind to disparage such an event and such a vow were they true - again, this reads more like good fiction than history.

A curious read.

4 out of 5 stars A little to conspiracy laced for my taste but still a must read........2007-09-11

Perkins sounded a little too much like a conspiracy theorist in this book compared to his first Hitman book but it is still a must read. We all know that the majority of American's believe what they want to believe and do not care about people in the third world. I was not aware of America's history of disastrous foreign policies and was truly fascinated to here it from John Perkins's point of view. I hate how multi-national corporations profit at the expense of the environment and workers of third world nations. I am as conservative as they come, but I hate greed with a passion and even though this book is not completely free of bias it still was a utterly fascinating read.

4 out of 5 stars A good read.......2007-09-06

This book was well-written, and the author very clearly illustrates his points. The only problem I had with it was that I had already read Confessions, and this book is a reiteration of those ideas with some new (and some old) examples. It is ultimately building off of the last book. It is not a must-read, but it is a good read. I am now faced with the dilemma, however, that every time I want to buy something I end up thinking about how many people have been adversely affected by its existence. It is certainly an eye-opener.

OK, here's the deal... Are you thinking of getting into the music business? Trying to get your band signed? Becoming a songwriter? This book will discourage you beyond description, so read at you own risk. However it will allow you to go into the business of music with your eyes wide open. A good history lesson of the deal makers that launched rock and roll, R & B, pop, disco, etc. All happening before the digital age. Do you have a kid that wants to be the next American Idol? Want to discourage them? Get them this book!

I read it a while ago and have used the knowledge to my benefit. Though I haven't made a fortune writing music, I have managed to keep my songs mine and make vacation money.

5 out of 5 stars The Dirty Truth About an Equally Dirty Business.......2007-06-08

Mr. Dannen has written a book that could have been written by any one of two dozen people. However, the others would have incriminated themselves, or wound up in a Nevada corn field with a bullet in their heads!!

Naming names and identifying specific dates, Mr. Dannen tells the majority of the truth about how things really work behind the scenes to make a song a "HIT". From the early days of "legal payoffs" to the "payola" scandals of the late 50s and early 60s, to the line item "marketing" expenses that major labels right off every day to cover the payments made to the corporate radio stations.

This book helps identify why great music never makes it to "Top 40" or CHR (Contemporary Hit Radio). Why great artists are left in the dark while "Casper Milktoast" acts seem to get played 12 times during drive time!!!

If you want to read a fact-filled book about how the music business and hit radio have created such an insestuous relationship, then buy this book. It is full of thrills, fear, anger, humor, big names and bigger deals. You'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars MICROCOSM OF AMERICA?.......2006-08-07

This book shook the music world when it was first released, which was when I first read it. I just recently picked it up and read it again, and it was still an equally mind-blowing experience.
What was with those guys? Why did they feel the need to rip off every artist to the maximum possible extent? Couldn't they still have been just as powerful, just as legendary, and very nearly as wealthy, if they'd paid the artists the few pennies per record or airplay that would have been their rightful compensation for creating the music that rocked the world and brought billions of international dollars into American coffers?
Whatever happened to Dennis Waitley and his "win-win" scenarios? You don't hear much about him any more. Perhaps his concepts were too anathematic to the American mindset. Whatever happened to the concepts of "noblesse oblige," and "from those who have received much, much is expected"? Whatever happened to "a rising tide lifts all boats"? Whatever happened to the Magna Carta, the Renaissance, the American Revolution, the French Revolution, and all the other movements that raised the world to the dizzying heights it once achieved?
I guess they've been replaced by that all-American concept, "whoever dies with the most toys wins."
As we watch the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, and rising fuel prices cause the American dream to recede into the sunset while our beloved representative republic slips back toward medieval fuedalism; as we watch American corporations, once looted from without by corporate raiders, now being looted from within by greedy and/or incompetent executives with golden parachutes while their stockholders, employees and retirees have their lives decimated, we can at least hope that what we do here will stand forever as an example to the rest of the world of how NOT to live.
Osama bin Laden, in his famous "letter to America," called us the worst civilization the world has ever seen, wallowing in decadence and depravity and calling it the height of individual freedom. Could he have been right?
This book gives the reader a valuable opportunity to take a close-up look at one of the foundation pillars of our economy and our culture, and witness the process by which America is rotting from within.

Bob Miller, The Business of Assassination (Booksurge, 2006)

The Business of Assassination is something of a misnomer as a title for this book. Miller's political screed (bounced off narrator Nan Kilar, a freelance journalist associated with Miller's website, and who is more than willing to throw in opinions of her own on a fairly regular basis) only extends for about the first third of this small (170pp.) volume. The rest is comprised of what, in the music world, we'd call a sampler: excerpts of three of Miller's previous books (Taciturn, My Friend Zabar, and Toto Coelo). The first of them does have a bit to do with the subject matter outlined in the title, as it's an excerpt from a novel of Miller's (semiautobiographical, Kilar tells us) that dabbles in the politics of assassination and revenge as applied to the Vegas mob. Zabar is a collection of excerpts from eight of the ten stories in the collection of that title having to do with Zabar the angel (who, of course, has little if anything to do with assassination, being an angel and all), and the last--well, another wag summed it up in his review as a series of Christian one-liners, and that's about as accurate a description as I could come up with. So first off, be aware that what you see is not what you get.

For the most part, the usual problems with vanity publications (the ubiquitous spelling and grammar errors) are absent here; you'll find no more typos in The Business of Assassination than you would from any major-press book these days. The writing style, though, still pegs it as pay-to-publish; as with most books that find their way through the vanity-press grist mill, a good copywriter or line-by-line critic would have been an immense help to the book. As I always say with vanities, though, if that's not the kind of thing that bothers you, then add a couple of stars to my rating; I mark off more for writing style in books like this than I ever do for subject matter or the like. In fact, as far as subject matter goes, if the Business of Assassination had stayed on topic, it probably would have gotten one of the better ratings I'd given a vanity pub in the last couple of years; while Miller's ranting (and I use that term in the best possible sense) is, of course, not substantiated with any sort of data whatsoever--if it were, it wouldn't be a rant, would it?--there's certainly all kinds of food for thought to be found here. There are a number of allegations worth looking deeper into for the reader with a propensity for doing research, and those alone might well be worth the purchase price for the more grounded conspiracy theorists and political pundits reading this. As well, Miller, a Republican, seems to have no qualms about alienating readers of either of the big political parties in America here, and anyone who's willing to throw stones at both sides of the aisle gets points in my book. Still, some substantiation, some editing, and a willingness to either expound on the topic at hand or release a shorter book would've served The Business of Assassination in good stead. * ½

4 out of 5 stars Not about Assassination.......2007-05-13

This is a complicated book to read... or so I thought until I decided to treat it as its four constituent parts: an eleven-chapter non-fiction rant, a four-chapter fiction excerpt from Taciturn, a seven-chapter fiction excerpt from An Angel Named Zabar, and a four-chapter non-fiction excerpt from Toto Coelo. I honestly could not figure out why they were joined in the same book other than as a story collection, so I treated them individually.

Assassination--If ever there was a man born not to suffer fools gladly then that man would have to be Bob Miller. At 65, Bob is a licensed and experienced curmudgeon. (I'm only 58 and still have two years on my apprenticeship.) I would have liked to see the three follow-on excerpts removed from the book and the space devoted to filling in the missing details of Bob's life post-Vietnam. Without those details, the book starts a lot of interesting stories but leaves them at the innuendo stage. As such, those stories might appeal to the already-convinced, but if the goal is to change attitudes, they fall a bit short.

Taciturn--A wonderfully gritty, noir crime-thriller, set in modern day Las Vegas. Reminiscent of Raymond Chandler. I liked what I read so much I ordered the book.

Zabar--Bob shows his southern roots here with a collection of stories about an angel named Zabar. The writing here reminded me of Flannery O'Connor. I'll probably order this one too.

Toto Coelo--This one didn't do much for me. I'm probably the world's first fundamentalist agnostic, and hence, have a difficult time swallowing a book full of inspirational one-liners from a George Burns style comedian. Again, this one is probably affirming to the already-convinced, but too glib and too cutesy for me.

2 out of 5 stars Just because it's true, I don't have to like it........2006-03-12

A few years ago, I read a review about another book by this same author: "The statements in this book question the reality of the experiences. The words contain enough truth to bring tears to your eyes. A must read for an in-depth look in to the soul of mankind."

I'm sorry. I hate redundancy too, but this old review says exactly how I feel about this book. I've done a little research on this author, and I don't like him as a person, but he has paid his dues. Each time I think of him, his books, articles or speeches, I think of what William Blake the English poet, 1757-1827 said, "He who desires but acts not breeds pestilence."

As I read this book, I didn't have a difficult time understanding why the Secret Service had locked him away in a VA hospital for being a possible threat to former President George H.W. Bush, 1990-91. What I don't understand is why they released him.

5 out of 5 stars This guy's predictions have been 100% right on!.......2006-03-04

This book contains some of the author's speeches dating back to 2001 and articles that were published even before that. It is unbelievable how this guy was able to deliver a blow-by-blow account of what Americans could expect from Bush and Cheney years in advance. One of his speeches in this book entitled "Democracy Took The Day Off" is one he gave at an annual song writer's convention in 2004 where he said, "With the backbone of the Democratic Party, William Jefferson Clinton, out of the way and the Bush Storm Troopers in place, democracy took the day off. Then this war-for-profit crew moved forward with their plans as if world opinions were irrelevant.

"Now that the moment of glory has passed and the long years of blood, sweat and tears are upon us, they will yet again -- according to plan -- take their spoils and move on, leaving the rest of us to bury the dead and balance the checkbook.

"Think about it... $[...]million dollars and instant naturalization given to an Arab who provided the whereabouts of Saddam's sons in order that Bush, Blair and the major armed forces of the world could at least find someone or something, if not weapons of mass destruction.

"I am grateful for the many invitations to join the Democratic Party, but Ill stick it out here. I mean, how could it possibly get any worse than having the second most hated man to live in the last 200 years as your candidate?

"I'm not campaigning against a fellow Republican. The truth is Bush does not represent the Republican Party or any other party for that matter. He represents the Bush dynasty. Is it not bad enough that another four years of his dictatorship will produce yet more unemployed, homeless and demoralized Americans?

"Can we also risk having to cope with his uncontrollable ego? The leadership of this father and son team can be critiqued using a term that epitomizes their presidencies: Collateral Damage. Clearly, America's integrity and economy fall into this category when they clash with the prosperity of Bush and his accomplices."

1 out of 5 stars Hit Below the Belt.......2003-08-10

I was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer and am about to undergo a radical prostatectomy in about 6 days. I was disappointed in the book and found it amazing how many physicians and other professionals were consulted before the author determined or decided on his course of treatment. I had hoped to have a more balanced read and this book made me really wonder whether I have opted for what is best for me. I am not a doctor and did not have access to the professionals the author had access to. Fortunately, I first read a book by Dr. Patrick C. Walsh who developed the "nerve-sparing" technique before I read this book. At least I have some peace of mind that I have made the right decision.

          1 out of 5 stars Berberich's exagerations do a disservice to readers.......2002-09-26

He makes the process even scarier than it already needs to be. He exagerates. For instance, he describes the pain of the biopsy as horrible. Having just had one, I can say the pain was not noteworthy.

He goes to a hundred doctors to determine his course of action. Doesn't that, by itself, show he's at least a little bit crazy?

4 out of 5 stars Fresh perspective on prostrate cancer.......2001-09-05

Because the author is a doctor, because of the treatment option he selected, and most of all, because of his direct and engaging writing style, Berberich's book is well worth reading.

          3 out of 5 stars Another viewpoint.......2001-08-14

I read this book because of the quotes I'd read in a nutrition newsletter that seemed to capture the mind-set that was essental if one is to deal with prostate cancer successfully. I'm a pediatrcian, like the author, who was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer and had a radical prostatectomy with good results. I was hoping for more wisdom from reading the book, but found most of it only in the introduction. The author's obsessive pursuit of knowledge in order to make his decision fit his personality, but perhaps not many others. His anecdotal comments about the surgical option are just that, and far from what I experienced. I'm afraid that many of his own fears will only serve to cause more anxiety to readers than is necessary and prevent them from "coming to peace" with prostate cancer and the decision they make. For those men who have decided on radiation and seeds this book might be helpful. But, for those seeking a balanced view of the treatment options this book will not be useful.

5 out of 5 stars We Are All Human.......2001-08-13
