Book Description
This Is Not the Life I Ordered is for anyone who has ever felt overworked, overwhelmed, or just plain unlucky (and, who hasn't?!). Through this collection of stories, wisdom, and practical advice, readers will meet four ordinary women who have faced extraordinary life challenges. Together, they have a history of six marriages, ten children, four stepchildren, six dogs, two miscarriages, two cats, a failed adoption, and foster parenthood. Two have lived through the death of their spouses and one was shot and left for dead on a tarmac in Guyana -- which is documented in "Jonestown" airing on PBS' American Experience
This book started simply with four friends getting together for "kitchen-table coaching sessions" to talk about their lives. Week by week and story by story, they realized their great advice to each other could help other women struggling with life's myriad issues of work, family, and love, as well as the big questions of life and death. For over a decade, the power and strength of their collective friendship enabled these women not only to survive but to thrive. They invite readers to join them to learn how they, too, can turn "misfortunate" events into joy-filled opportunities. Readers will want to share this book with every woman in their lives!
* Authors are best-selling business-book author, Deborah Collins Stephens; Emmy winner Jan Yanehiro; State Senator Jackie Speier; and entrepreneur Michealene Cristini Risley whose Flashcards was screened at last year's Cannes Film Festival.
* Authors' support circle includes Debbi Fields, Kristi Yamaguchi, Danielle Steele, Gerry Laybourne, and other power women.
* Features practical "Wit (Women in Transition) Kit" tips at the end of each chapter to help readers to be their own life coaches.

Excellent strategies.......2007-09-12
I found this book to be very helpful as I tried to navigate through a very difficult time in my life. It gave real examples of situations that were much worse than my own, and provided practical ideas for moving forward.
This Is Not the Life I Ordered: 50 Ways to Keep Your Head Above Water When Life Keeps Dragging You Down.......2007-08-14
This book is so inspirational! One of the best books I have read! I highly recommend it to all women and men. I plan on getting copies for my family and women friends. Thanks ladies for sharing your life stories and the stories of so many different and unique women. You are all an inspiration! God Bless
It's Not About Being Average.......2007-08-10
Let's face it - we all come to a point where we think, "This is not what I wanted out of life." This book is for anyone who is at that point or has experienced a personal tragedy that has continued to haunt them. Anyone could read this and instantly identify the vast gap between the average American woman and the authors whose personal stories are shared within its pages, but the point of the book is not to point out who has it worse when dealing with bad situations (a new widow in suburbia or a cmpany executive losing a 6-figure income). The point is actually to give you an idea of just how bad things can be and how you can rise above anything. The basic information provided in the "action steps" apply to just about any situation. There are fantastic motivational quotes throughout and excellent ideas for how to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and get going again, no matter what your circumstances. Even if you are feeling negative and pessimistic, this book can help you find positivity and optimism from those people and places that already surround you. I have recommended this book to several friends who have already read and enjoyed it just as much as I did. I returned mine to the library and promptly bought my own copy (as well as a few extras for gifts)!
Did I read the same book as the rest of you?.......2007-07-30
I stumbled across this book while doing research for a book I am writing. I actually wanted to use the same title for a collection of humorous essays, and then felt compelled to read this one. I am only halfway through it and am exhausted from slogging through the overabundance of headings and subheadings in each chapter, the overuse of quotations, and the endless posturing and patronizing from unrelatable situations that so few women will ever face - shot in South America while disbanding a cult, crying over the loss of a $200,000 job, escaping the Khmer Rouge. How is an average American woman supposed to connect with these stories? I am sure every woman mentioned in this book is courageous, intelligent and generous. But the disjointed writing and sloppy editing make it a chore to find their true essence and a message to carry with me. I had such high hopes for this book. I am glad now that I merely borrowed it from the library rather than purchased it. I do enjoy the cartoons, though.
If You're a Woman, You Need This Book!.......2007-07-18
I just finished reading "This is Not the Life I Ordered," by Deborah Collins Stephens, Jackie Speier, Michealene Cristini Risley and Jan Yanehiro and all I can say is get this book!
This book touches every human aspect possible and carves out a whole new way of looking at life. It shows the power of connecting with women on all levels. These four authors weave in their life stories as well as countless other women's life stories into a book that will become your inspiration to get through the hard times, define your life, enrich the lives of others and live your life to the fullest.
It's the kind of book that you will buy for your friends so you can connect with them on a newer, deeper level.
It's the kind of book that you will read over and over again to receive a renewed strength, sense of self and desire to do more, be more and have more.

Book Description
Why was this a #1 bestseller in Canada in 2002? Because it is an easy-to-follow, easy-to-stick-to, truly healthy approach to eating that is based on the Glycemic Index, the original science behind The Zone Diet, but eliminates that diet's complexity and tendency to leave dieters wanting more. If you can understand a traffic light, you can understand this diet--and lose weight permanently without feeling hungry, counting calories, or jeopardizing your health. If a food is in the green column, eat it. If it's in the red column, avoid it. And if it's in the yellow column, proceed with caution. Take bread, for example. White bread, with its high G.I. number, is red-because it's so highly processed the body digests it quickly, resulting in a spike in blood sugar, a release of insulin, potential storage as fat, and a quick return of the hungry feeling. Low-G.I. 100% stone-ground whole-wheat bread is green-the body takes a while to digest it, with no spike in blood sugar and a much longer feeling of satiety. Green, yellow, red: It's all here, with a full explanation of how the diet works, plus ratings for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, eating out or eating in. Includes some recipes, snack ideas, a shopping list, and tips on dining out.
Customer Reviews:
This is a great book!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-08-03
I bought this book for myself and am having such great success that I bought the book for my mother and sister. To date mom and I combined have lost 50 lbs. We have more energy and feel healthier than we have in years. Mom is 63 years old and keeps up with us if not better she says her energy level is just amazing. I have a total of 56 lbs. to lose. I have lost 22 lbs I know with this plan I will make it. This is a way of eating not just a diet but here's the beauty in it you can easily eat this way for the rest of your life. I would recommend this book to anyone who is ready to lose weight and get healthy.
1st Book of the GI Diet.......2007-07-30
This book verifies and clarifies the idea of the insulin and glucose "yo-yo" weight gain. 20 years ago I read another book similar to this idea, "Sugar Blues", but it was considered "fanatical". I recommend this book to anyone who can't understand why they just can't lose weight.
Great Guide for Healthier Living = Weight Loss.......2007-07-25
I ordered this book in late April 2007 and found it a very easy read, with clear and concise charts and explanations. I, like many people, struggle with my weight and find that I have been undertaking the battle of the buldge for nearly 3/4 of my life, so far. I have had enough.
I have tried every plan and I liked Atkins, and had success with it, but I tweaked it and kept my carbs in check but ate lean meats, the "right" fruits and plenty of vegetables. If I eliminated too many of the good foods...I felt crummy.
Low fat by itself was not a good choice for me.
So, I read up on the Glycemic Index and in researching food lists, on the internet, I found this book. Wow! I am glad that I did.
I can't say that it, by itself, is some miracle breakthrough. Much, for me, is stuff that I already knew and found was true with my own body and metabolism. But the book gives great guides, easy to follow lists (RED
< YELLOW AND GREEN LIGHT foods) and takes the guesswork out of eating right.
I have peacefully decided that while I need to lose 70-80 pounds to embrace a healthy BMI - I am not on a diet. I am changing my lifestyle. I am not making changes-TEMPORARILY- but permanently. This book makes that possible. I am still in the weight loss phase and am doing well.
Since the end of April, I have lost 37.4 pounds. This is by following the Glycemic Index and fueling my body with the food that will bring me the most satisfaction and energy. I have never been more satiated or energetic (and I need to be with 3 boys between 1 and 9!) I have also started walking and incorporating activity (real activity- not just chasing after my kids) into my lifestyle. I'm not a fitness guru and wish that I could get the weight off and keep it off without it...but I can't and it won't. I am walking 30 minutes, at LEAST 3 times a week or maximum of 5. That is all I have done differently. I am thrilled and amazed by my progress and am careful to not allow my mindset to change.
I don't want to be diabetic or have high blood pressure or cholesterol. I want to be a healthy, fit 37 year old wife and mother. This book is helping me. The recipes are delicious too!
I think that the high fiber with the low fat, whole grains, fruit and veggies...really helps keep me full and satisfied as well as selecting those foods that don't naturally cause sharp increases or declines in my blood sugar. Thank you, Mr. Gallup for not just being another fad diet or looking to get rich off all of the overweight people out there. Making a living/profit off of sound science and desire to share the knowledge is respectable.
It has only been 14 weeks and I am feeling very good with my results of 37.4 pounds down. I think that I will be satisfied with 45 more and I am taking it in "little bites".
Great book. I encourage you to make the change in your life too, as it is really something you can LIVE with!
It Works!.......2007-07-09
I was able to get off insulin and any other diabetes medication (I am type 2)
within a year by losing more than 100 lbs! You have to combine it with exercise of course, but it works!
Helped stopped Eating Disorders.......2007-05-28
I began following this book 2 weeks ago. I know that I don't really need to lose weight but having had eating disorders for over 40 years I am always searching for a way to lose a "few" pounds. Yes, I have lost 5 lbs.since starting the book, but the biggest plus of all is having my hunger satisfied to the point that I no longer suffer the constant craving of high sugar, high fat content foods to binge on. The dynamics behind the diet of regulating insulin is what its all about. It's only been 2 weeks, but so far for the first time in 40 years have I enjoy a normal relationship with food. Love this book!! It is so easy to follow and allows you plenty of good food all day. I'm grateful to have found it.

Customer Reviews:
Great Information for arthritis sufferers.......2007-09-02
This author has figured out what causes many cases of arthritis. I have osteoarthritis and have been following her recommendations for about a month now. I can already tell a difference in the way I feel. If I cheat, I can really tell the difference the next day. I recommend this book.
Using The Book.......2007-03-26
Book was very organized and as a result was clear. The format of explanation and then giving a plan of action was excellent. The only thing it needed to be a 5 Star was a little more humor.
Great Book!.......2007-03-26
A different theory at what causes arthritis, written by someone who generally cured herself. Talks a lot about food sensitivities that cause arthritis and how to figure out what your food sensitivity so you can avoid or reduce your expose thus feel better.
The Type of Arthritis the Author Has Should Be Revealed!.......2007-03-13
I think this is a good book, but unfortunately, the author's type of arthritis (allergic) is not related to rheumatoid arthritis, which is what my husband has. So, basically, I wasted my money on a book we cannot use.
a miracle.......2007-01-20
This book and the ideas expressed in it are nothing short of a miracle. I started having my first hints of RA 11 months ago. It took 3 months of rapidly developing pain in most of my joints until I was finally diagnosed. After the devastating news & realization that the heavy drugs I was on were not having much if any effect I started seeking out alternatives on the internet. That is when I ran across the food/arthritis connection & this book - Conquering Arthritis. It has been nothing short of a miracle. After the week detox I could already bend my fingers which was something I thought I would not do again, I was already convinced. The process of healing is a very long & stressful task. Identifying all my problem foods took 4 - 5 months & it seemed like I would never be able to eat a normal meal. It has been well worth it as now I have no pain from RA. This takes complete dedication & I was amazed at how much strength I had as I went though so many struggles emotionally & physically to be pain free. My motivation was thinking about a miserable future where I couldn't walk & enjoy the outdoors which made the alternative, the temporary struggles of the diet, seem like nothing. I can now make relatively normal meals again with just a few substitutions. I know that at this point I am not completely healed but I am well on my way. It has been a year since my first pains. I have come so far & feel so blessed everytime I go out to take a jog or hike. Barbara Allan has been such a blessing and an inspiration. I am so thankful for this book. I encourage anyone with any kind of arthritis to buy it. It is life changing!

In this autobiography, Virgin Group founder Richard Branson says one of his prime business criteria is "fun." Fun made Branson a billionaire, and few business memoirs are one-billionth as fun as Branson's, nor as niftily written. Not only does it relate his side of near-death corporate experiences, it tells how the chairman literally cheated death by gun, shipwreck, and balloon crash.
Branson's empire--now encompassing interests in an airline, pop music, soda pop, e-commerce, and financial services--began when the dyslexic 16-year-old dropped out of school in 1968 to found the British magazine Student. His headmaster said, "I predict that you will either go to prison or become a millionaire." Briefly imprisoned for dodging customs selling records, Branson got his first million by releasing Tubular Bells, a maverick recording all the stuffy executives rejected. (1998's Tubular Bells III puts the series' sales over 20 million.)
Despite wild tales of Branson's wife-swapping and Keith Richards fleeing naked from Branson's studio at gunpoint with another man's woman, the most shocking parts of the memoir concern British Airways' James Bond-like "dirty tricks" campaign against Virgin Atlantic, resulting in the biggest award for damages in English history.
Though it's filled with famous names, witty quotes, and pulse-pounding accounts of lunatic balloon adventures, it is as a business thriller that the book really scores. His instinctive bet-the-ranch tactics could cost him all, or earn another billion. Either way, Branson will likely remain the most entertaining entrepreneur in Europe. --Tim Appelo
Book Description
"Oh, screw it, let's do it."
That's the philosophy that has allowed Richard Branson, in slightly more than twenty-five years, to spawn so many successful ventures. From the airline business (Virgin Atlantic Airways), to music (Virgin Records and V2), to cola (Virgin Cola), to retail (Virgin Megastores), and nearly a hundred others, ranging from financial services to bridal wear, Branson has a track record second to none.
Losing My Virginity is the unusual, frequently outrageous autobiography of one of the great business geniuses of our time. When Richard Branson started his first business, he and his friends decided that "since we're complete virgins at business, let's call it just that: Virgin." Since then, Branson has written his own "rules" for success, creating a group of companies with a global presence, but no central headquarters, no management hierarchy, and minimal bureaucracy.
Many of Richard Branson's companies--airlines, retailing, and cola are good examples--were started in the face of entrenched competition. The experts said, "Don't do it." But Branson found golden opportunities in markets in which customers have been ripped off or underserved, where confusion reigns, and the competition is complacent.
And in this stressed-out, overworked age, Richard Branson gives us a new model: a dynamic, hardworking, successful entrepreneur who lives life to the fullest. Family, friends, fun, and adventure are equally important as business in Branson's life. Losing My Virginity is a portrait of a productive, sane, balanced life, filled with rich and colorful stories:
Crash-landing his hot-air balloon in the Algerian desert, yet remaining determined to have another go at being the first to circle the globe
Signing the Sex Pistols, Janet Jackson, the Rolling Stones, Boy George, and Phil Collins
Fighting back when British Airways took on Virgin Atlantic and successfully suing this pillar of the British business establishment
Swimming two miles to safety during a violent storm off the coast of Mexico
Selling Virgin Records to save Virgin Atlantic
Staging a rescue flight into Baghdad before the start of the Gulf War . . .
And much more. Losing My Virginity is the ultimate tale of personal and business survival from a man who combines the business prowess of Bill Gates and the promotional instincts of P. T. Barnum.
Also available in the UK from Virgin Publishing, and in Canada from General Publishing,
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-10-01
I have read this book three times. Branson does business the way we should all aspire to do business. He has built businesses that he is passionate about. He enjoys his life and has been exceptionally successful. I find it to be an inspiring and enjoyable read. Probably why I have returned to it multiple times.
The best book I've read!.......2007-09-24
This is probably the best book I've ever read so far. Its not a business book, so read it as you would "literature" over a weekend... but its filled with great entertaining stories and helps you see how this guy's life has been. And you definitely learn some lessons.
If you are an entrepreneur, you MUST read Losing my Virginity!
Enjoyable read. Buy it!.......2007-09-14
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.
I'm not big on reading autobiographies, but this one I really enjoyed, couldn't put it down!
Good Book, Easy Read.......2007-08-13
Very enjoyable read. He does not give you any great business insight, but it is an uplifting and encouraging story.
Amusing, Inspiring, Educational and Brilliant!.......2007-07-25
This is a sensational book. Most autobiographies are boring and so full of only positive stuff about the person that you just know you are not getting the full picture. In this book Branson openly admits mistakes and bad business decisions. He gives credit to others acknowledging Virgin's success would not have happened without them. He also included instances when he has been brought back down to earth for example when two tourists asked for a picture he thought that he was being nice and started posing for them until he saw their confused faces and realised they wanted him to take a picture of them.
This book tells the reader everything about the Virgin empire from the first issue of Student magazine in 1968 to approval for their trains thirty years later in 1998. Obviously a lot more has happened since 98 such as Virginblue in Australia but we will have to wait for the sequel for that. This is a brilliant book which is as enjoyable as the great financial fictional thrillers like Harry Bingham's classic the Money Makers. This is so mush more inspiring when you realise Branson is not a fictional character and these achievements are real. This book will inspire you to get out there and make money. Buy it!
Note - There is an updated version of this book to be released soon which will have the post 98 stuff in it.

Customer Reviews:
A delightful, helpful book.......2006-08-15
After reading the widely disparate reviews, I got a copy from the library. I found the book to be delightful and helpful, and I have ordered a copy to own. I lead a complex life, producing beautiful, organized work but leaving debris around me as drafts, printouts, and other papers accumulate. The author is very understanding of the thought processes and problems of Accumulators and Paper Pilers. Her humor makes the task of organizing and disposing less of a chore. As a person with some ADD difficulties, often overwhelmed by distractions, I find her methods of working on little parts of a problem a big help.
Take it bit by bit.......2005-07-18
Clutter is often a result of having a busy life. Hence, it wouldn't make sense for a book intended to help you clear clutter to involve a lot of your time. The book is designed of short but extremely helpful tips, so that you can read only a little bit and take 15 minutes to fight clutter. In other words, it helps you keep from being overwhelmed by the daunting task of clearing your stuff. I've always been. and always will be, a packrat, but I'm a more organized packrat now.
Stands Well Above Others Like It.......2005-02-28
This book really changed my ideas about decluttering my life. It has great mix of psychological motivation and practical how-tos. After reading it front to back, I go back and pick it up to read specific sections every now and then. This book is practical, a fun read and helped me change my home for the better.
Cut the Clutter, Stow the stuff.......2004-03-10
I believe this book to be very helpful. IF you are not impaired in the ways of organization, then of course this book would have useless ideas for people who already know them. For those of us with this problem of not knowing how to organize, this book is great. It showed me how to organize space more efficiently, gave me a different outlook on how to use different rooms in my home and gave me some resources for what to buy for cabinets, closets and entryways. It is VERY helpful and full of all different advice in the way of organization. IT points out the psychological reasons we hoard things,,,,what type of clutter person you are and with that information helps you fight the habits that got you to the place where you needed to buy the book in the first place. Reading the other reviews, I believe them to unfairly put this book on a low level, seems maybe these people did not need the help to begin with??? It helps...it has major ideas and a lot of them in an easy to grasp format that is easy and pleasurable to read.
cut the clutter don't buy this book.......2004-02-20
I bought this book while I was living in America and have just gotten around to reading it.I wish I had not ,the pages are badly set out with to many side bars making it a pain to read .Also there is not enough good information in it to make it worth buying.A note to the editor if you produce this book for the British market you want to use another word than Tosser this is not a nice word over here and may offend some people.

Book Description
The host of the hit reality show The Apprentice presents an invaluable collection of grounded, hard-hitting advice on business success, from people who have made it to the boss’s chair at some of America’s most thriving companies.
How can you find the way to the top?
Ask people who are already there.
Because you can’t know it all. No matter how smart you are, no matter how comprehensive your education, no matter how wide-ranging your business experience, there’s simply no way to acquire all the wisdom you need to make your business flourish. You need to learn from those who have blazed a trail before you.
Donald Trump has asked many of the brightest, most successful businesspeople he knows—and some he doesn't know—to answer this question: What's the best business advice you ever received? The result is a compelling resource of wisdom and wit that reveals how some of the most accomplished people conduct their personal and business affairs, giving an inside look into the secrets of corporate success. But the advice doesn’t only come from the upper echelons of the Fortune 500. Thoughts poured in from executives at thriving companies large and small, ranging from well-known icons such as Staples, American Airlines, Lillian Vernon, and Boeing to family-run operations like Orleans Homebuilders and Carlson Companies.

Pales by comparison.......2007-09-03
Disappointing only when compared to his other books. Not really pearls from Donald Trump himself, but rather it is advice from a number of other successfull people compiled into a "coffee table" format. That aside, most of the advice was helpful, but much was repetitious. But then most achievers have the same traits, don't they? It's just that Mr. Trump has all of these (which he onlys mentions once), and then so many more.
The "so many more" are revealed in his other books like "How to get Rich" and "Think Like a Billionaire". One interesting aspect of his writing is how he matures from "The Art of the Deal" forward. He readily acknowledges his mistakes and explains how he has learned from them. What always shines through is his indefatigable spirit of not ever giving up no matter how tough the going gets.
Disappointed.......2007-02-02
I read the book he co-authored with Robert Kiyosaki "Why we want you to be rich" and I liked it! So I decided to read some more of Trump, but without flicking through this book as I was catching a plane to Korea. I was disappointed as it is just a bunch of affirmations really. Sure.. good advice
from people who know how to get things done. But I was hoping to get more insights into investing.
Some good advice.......2006-07-13
The key word is "some". Most of the advice is commonsense or if you don't have any, I take it back. This book is just a compilation of advice from successful business contacts of Trump. Trump doesn't really offer any advice except a few lines in the introduction.
Best Advise that you have been told before........2006-03-02
249 pages of quotes, I bought the book online, save your money.
There are 100 better books to read, this is padding to The Donald's wallet.
Thanks.......2005-09-11
Not really an easy read. A lot of antidotal comments, and just a collection of valuable advice given by hundreds of powerful CEOs and other successful people. More of a reference book than anything.

Book Description
This I Ching was written under the guidance of the Sage that speaks through the I Ching oracle. It shows the Cosmos as a system of harmony, the principles of which are clearly described in its 64 hexagrams.
The purpose of consulting the oracle is to inquire, before an undertaking, whether you are in harmony with the Cosmic Way. When this is confirmed by the words "success," or "good fortune," whatever you do will be supported by the invisible helping forces of the Cosmos. When your attitude is discordant, the oracle predicts "misfortune," meaning that these helping forces will not support what you do. The answers of the oracle are not to be taken as fortune-telling, but as reflecting the cosmic consequences of your attitude toward your goal.
All counsel given by the I Ching is directed toward helping you return to harmony with the Cosmos. To do this you are being given a deeper understanding of the principles of Cosmic Harmony that are involved in the issue at hand. In the light of these principles you will be able to recognize particular mistaken ideas that are the cause of your discord, or misfortune. This book is the first I Ching oracle that shows you how to deprogram the obstructing ideas, and thus reunite with the Cosmic Harmony.
Also presented in this book is an innovative method of communicating directly with the Sage that speaks through the I Ching. This method allows you to clarify its message until it assures you that you have reached an adequate understanding. Regularly consulting the I Ching in this way leads to clarifying insights into your life's purpose, and to a pronounced increase in your own creativity. It was through this method, in combination with meditations and dreams, that the Sage gave the authors the completely new perspective on the nature of the Cosmos, human nature, and the place of humans within the Cosmic Whole described here. Rather than presenting you with fixed answers to every problem, this book allows the Cosmic Teacher called "the Sage" to show you your own path to insight and inner guidance.

When I discovered the first sentence of the introduction to be written in poor English grammar, i did not give the rest of the book much perusal. I returned it for full refund.
Holy Moly, A New I Ching.......2007-02-23
Saturday, my daughter, Sasha Wittmann, LMP, wanted help making a decision about leaving her current work, which has depleted her energies and her joy, stressed her to the limit, and doesn't pay well enough.
Should she take a job she likes with the university with the possibility of either ending in two months because of funding or continuing for years? While in the new part-time position, she would continue taking steps towards a fully supporting massage practice.
She felt fear. If this new job ended in two or three months, how would she pay the mortgage, etc.? She wanted security. Which to choose - stay in hell or take the worrisome risk?
Do you ever wish you could get a clear answer to a tough decision? Of course you do. Your life as a human requires you to make tough decisions always with insufficient information it seems. Wouldn't it be great if you could just ask the core wisdom of the cosmos what to do?
Can you imagine the comfort of knowing what to do? Further, can you imagine trusting that your decision aligned with the best interests of the entire cosmos?
Carol Anthony and Hanna Moog address this core wisdom as the Sage in their wonderful new version of the I Ching -- I Ching, The Oracle of the Cosmic Way.
I love this ancient oracle, the I Ching. Over three decades ago, my beloved Suzanne introduced me to the Wilhelm version with the famous introduction by none other than Carl Jung. The Wilhelm version introduced me to Jung as well. Now, I hobnob with Jungians therapists. Who would have guessed?
Small suggestions lead to large life changes, yes.
You want to know what the I Ching is and what it can do for you, right?
The oldest written version of the I Ching dates to about 1000 BCE making it the most ancient written oracle you can have.
The subtitle of this new book declares the books deeper truth - this is the oracle of the Cosmic Way.
Other versions have translated the I Ching as the book of changes. Anthony and Moog make a distinction between change, which tends to be temporary, outer, and ego based vs. transformation, which is permanent, inner, and soul based.
This distinction alone would be enough for me to recommend the book. But as they say on late night infomercials, "Wait! There's more!"
Over the centuries, the I Ching has suffered from writers placing their own spin on the cosmic oracle. The worst offenders have been the Confucians. They see the world as a moral struggle against the evil animal nature of man. So the I Ching gets translated and interpreted from their moralistic viewpoint.
The Taoists, on the other hand, view the world as good and that man's animal nature is innocent. The problem you have arises when the ego - the grasping competitive mind -- attempts to subjugate the innocent nature.
Jimmy Carter's excellent but troubling book, Our Endangered Values: America's Moral Crisis, points to the same thing. Fundamentalism as practiced by the Christian right, the Islamic right, and others, suppresses women and fresh ideas. It concentrates power into the hands of a very few men - feudalism in a word.
The ladies have weeded out the feudal Confucian claptrap that interpenetrates every other version I have perused. They leave you with clarity and freedom. You can now have a very personal conversation between you, the authors, and the Sage. This is good. Yippee.
This is a reference book - you want to own this one, you can buy it here.
Oh, and what about Sasha? She made her own decision with out the assistance of me or the Sage. She's taking the risk.
Complex subject made understandable.......2007-01-06
Carol Anthony has spent most of her life as a student/teacher of the I-Ching. Her ability to share in understandable language the many layers of this most complex and subtle way of being is fully illustrated in this volume. As an American I have struggled with seeing the inner and outer world from the perspective of an ancient culture steeped in seeing Life force in everything. Carol Anthony's body of work on this subject has supported my learning tremendously. I highly recommend any of her books on this subject.
If you hold these truths to be self-evident..........2006-12-12
The criticisms of the Oracle of the Cosmic Way expressed in reviews here unquestionably have validity. However, it may be wise to exercise caution in basing on these criticisms one's decision of whether to engage this version of the I Ching. The I Ching and the Sage are one being. The Sage will speak to each of us according to our understanding and desire to learn. It is the Sage who should ultimately guide any decision about the version of the I Ching with which to work in a process of serious study. Turn within and consult that ultimate Oracle for best guidance.
The Oracle of the Cosmic Way is a unique expression of the Sage that will speak profoundly to some students. If you hold these truths to be self-evident you may be one of those students:
1. There are two basic realities with which we must come to terms, that of the actual reality of the cosmic harmonies, and that of the parallel reality of the ego, which is not real at all but is the world most people at the current time operate in and out of. The I Ching guides us to relate effectively with both realities.
2. We are always connected with the cosmic harmonies through the aligned perception of our inner and outer senses, and through our inner truth which also connects us to the inner truth in each person. We need only to clear away the debris of the ego in our mind to allow that which always is to be.
3. The ego has become our mind through a programming process that took place in our childhoods. Its program is designed to be extremely difficult to permanently remove, but this difficulty is only from the perspective of the ego. The ego operates through the misuse of the word by human beings. This misuse, which is inevitable when one acts in and out of the parallel reality, can take the form of projections, spells, and poison arrows. The interaction of the ego with itself through all those engaged in the parallel reality nourishes it with their chi energy and perpetuates its illusion of existence.
4. The ego's tyranny can be stopped at any time, in any situation, by saying the "Inner No" to it. This engages the Helpers, manifestations of the cosmic harmonies, who are unlimited in number and each of whom will perform a particular function to dissolve the parallel reality operating in any situation for the person who calls upon them. They withdraw and wait unless and until called upon. That withdrawal is known as a "fate," and will end when it has run its allotted course, or when the person experiencing the fate has corrected the false seed phrases (misuse of the word through core phrases programmed into the unconscious) which caused the Helpers to withdraw.
In the Oracle of the Cosmic Way the Sage addresses, in a language that some students will find clear and profound, these truths and many others that are interwoven with them. It dismantles the edifice of ego that has over millennia become superimposed on the Sage's original transmission as the I Ching. It is completely worthwhile if one resonates to the truths it addresses and the language it uses. Find a copy, articulate a question living in your heart, open the book and see what happens!
Beware .......2006-06-18
This text gives us a new way of throwing the I Ching to get much more specific answers. Problem is, one of the great strengths of the I Ching is that is stays on the mythic realm of archetype and imagistic poetry from which one interprets one's answer. Once you try to ground that into the specifics of the mundane, you get into trouble. I tried using their technique and wound up getting very frightening predictions of impending, fatal events that (now years later) I can say with confidence didn't happen. The beauty of the I Ching is that it offers us a poetic archetype of where we are, that we then interpret. The more you remove the poetry, and the interpretation, the more you remove the spirit of the original. I agree with previous reviewer who said, there's wisdom here, but it's not the I Ching.

Toxic People: 10 Ways Of Dealing With People Who Make Your Life Miserable
ASIN: 1932181016 |
Book Description
Toxic personality traits are found in more than half of all spouses, partners, or intimates, leading them to demand much, give little, and treat others shabbily. These traits are identified and targeted in this relationship guide. Helpful advice includes how to parent oneself, how to nurture the soul, and how to move toxic people toward learning the consequences of unacceptable behavior. This holistic approach provides a fresh perspective on dealing with personality disorders and rebuilding the self-esteem that gets destroyed by those toxic people.
Customer Reviews:
This book has a really great title........2007-06-27
If you think L. Ron Hubbard is a reliable scholarly reference, you may appreciate this author's common sense "201 ways to identify and deal with toxic personalities". Large print. Small pages. Highly derivative. Unoriginal. Not something that will have a permanent place on my bookshelf.
Too over the top........2007-02-12
I understand that we should notice bad things about toxic people, but no one is perfect. This book goes beyond logic, into what seems like a silly rant about behaviors that practically anyone can exhibit on a bad day.
Too over the top, and in laymans terms for me. I honestly regret this purchase. It's a bit cheesy to me, and written in a style that subtly smells of romance novel penmanship.
Good Condensed Information.......2006-08-28
If you like a quick read this will work for you. Laid out in a quote type format. Good quips that make you think.
FANTASTIC!.......2006-07-04
This book was fantastic. It helped me realize that I wasn't the crazy one and that the toxic people in my life were there because of their own actions. The way they acted towards me and others wasn't my fault and it wasn't because of me. This is a great book to help anyone figure out who the toxic people are in their lives and it tells you how to handle them accordingly. Highly recommend.
Avoiding the toxic.......2006-04-18
This book is one of the best books I've ever read. Not only is this book easy to read and understand, but it also provides good insight into the different types of personality disorders sometimes challenging the reader to examine his or herself. The author prepares us for what we may encounter in relationships, friendships, and even in the work place. We often face people who have toxic personalities and get sucked in, the book helps us to identify and break away. The book also tells us how toxic people don't know their toxic, often blaming you for problems, never looking at themselves, sometimes making you question your own sanity, thus making the title perfect. I enjoyed the book and I believe at one point or another everyone should read it.

Some Books are best left as long magazine articles.......2007-09-07
The Power of Positive Parenting contained a few key guiding principles that are valuable. The author's folksy style though is too repetitive and contains too much fluff - I appreciate the message and did learn some good things but it could have been done in a fraction of the space.
If you're a much faster reader (or have a significantly lighter reading load) than me this book is great. If not, I would have loved the Cliff Notes for this one.
From a practical point of view I wish the advice was tailored to particular age groups - too often the advice was poorly;y matched to my 3 year old.
In a nutshell: Love your kids, reinforce their good behavior, don't (over)react to their age-appropriate insanity. (sorry if I missed one)
Excellent Resource for Clinical Psychologists.......2006-11-10
I regularly assign this book as reading material for my clients, especially parents, as part of my clinical practice. I was amazed to find that many of the principles that I had stumbled onto in my clinical career as a Behavior Analyst were formally documented in this book all of those years ago. This is probably as close to a manual on "How to Parent" as there is out there.
most respected book on parenting.......2006-09-12
This invaluable book guides parents in raising responsible and respectful children while maintaining a caring and fun atmosphere in the home. My husband and I have used this book with our own six children for the past several years and have found it to be extremely useful and comforting in navigating difficult situations, and has helped us to stay close to each of our children.
The principles in the book are supported by research and empirical data, but, more importantly, Dr. Latham and countless others who have studied his model have seen amazing success. The important principles of ignoring inconsequential behavior, rewarding good behavior and effectively disciplining harmful behavior are outlined step-by- step with many specifics and examples and can be referenced easily by the type of behavior you want to address based on your child's age.
I often recommend Latham's book as a great complement for parents who are using my own children's series, "Learning to Get Along", which teaches concepts of respect and responsibility directly to children.
Positive Parenting.......2006-01-30
I found this book to be very helpful in understaning what helps and what hurts when trying to parent my children. I have read many books over the 20 years of parenting my 4 children and I feel this book is very insiteful with real examples of interactions with parents and children. This is the only book you will need to be the best parent and head you in the dirrection to have real and meaningful relationships with all of your children.
Turned my family dynamic around completely!.......2005-12-08
I first bought this book 2 years ago. At the time I was at my wits end struggling with behavioral issues with one of my children and feeling like parenting was the worst job in the world and that I was the worst parent ever. It took a while for the ideas from this book to sink in, but little by little I began to see that my little one was craving attention, ANY attention positive or negative, whatever she could get. Unfortunatly all she was getting was negative attention!
This book gave me the tools (recommended words and actions) to use to turn the negative attention to positive attention. It taught me to seek out and reward positive behavior and calmly handle the unwanted behavior. Two years later we have a warm, open, fun, mutually respectful relationship, a complete turn around. I feel like I am a great parent and my kids are respectful (most of the time!), not by force but out of respect. I have since bought 3 copies to give to parents that are frustrated and in the same negative attention abyss.
Parts of the book are redundant and albeit a bit corny but I love it just the same... IT WORKED FOR MY FAMILY.

Excellent for the Classroom.......2000-08-03
The Long Way to a New Land and The Long Way Westward are companion books that chronicle a family's journey from their Swedish farm, which is suffering from an extended drought, to a new home in Minnesota. The books describe the difficulty and dangers of the journey in a way that is non-complaining and full of optimism for a new life in America. Teachers, these books are wonderful for integrating with other subjects and topics, such as immigration, westward expansion, steamships, trains, geography, and American life in the 1860s.
