Book Description
In the tradition of the international bestseller The Red Tent comes a beautiful, sexy novel featuring Hannah, one of the most well-known and beloved heroines of the Old Testament.
Hannah and Pninah, once close childhood friends, become rivals for the attention of Elkanah, the man who has married them both. Pninah, passionate and independent, easily bears Elkanah many children, but bitter that he has taken her friend as a second wife, seeks fulfillment with her own secret lover. Hannah, the epitome of goodness and grace, remains completely devoted to her husband, but remains childless for many years, until a promise to God brings her the son she has yearned for.
Despite their differences, these two women must learn to live together, protecting their own interests as well as each other's, while sharing not only the love of their husband, but that of Hannah's son Samuel, who will become one of the great prophets of the Jewish people.

Bible, sex. love, betrayl, adultery, and history.......2007-05-16
This was a good book that, for me, started off slow but picked up when the conflicts REALLY kicked in!! Makes me in a strange sort of way, glad to see that these biblical icons had the same problems that I/we have. Samuel was no different and it was nice hearing about him and his mother and his attraction to an "off-limits" woman. I will definately be checking out this authors next novel.
A fine biblical "bodice ripper".......2007-05-05
The story of the birth of the prophet Samuel, but a brief snippet at the opening of the story that will focus first on the rise and fall of King Saul, and then the rise and foibles of King David, has long occupied a special place in the hearts of Bible lovers. The tale of Hannah, the childless woman pleading at the Temple contains all the hallmarks of a great biblical episode -- sparse prose, raw emotion, and deep humanity. No surprise then that an author chose to use these brief chapters as the basis of a novel of the relationship between Elkanah and his wives. Indeed readers are fortunate that Mrs. Etzioni-Halevy approaches the work with a deft pen, avoiding the excesses of "The Red Tent" and the two dimensional characters of "Queen Maker"
The Song of Hannah, with its often raw sexuality and emotions may offend some readers. Yet it is just such humanity that is at the heart of the Bible's eternal appeal; the characters are not paragons of myth but real complex people with all the strengths and flaws contained there in. Others may dislike the occasional anachronisms used by the author, transposing traditions likely post exile into the pre-monarchic period, but such choices are well within the rights of a writer. Moreover, this is not a piece of scholarship but a novel.
Provocative, engaging, and human, Eva Etzioni-Halevy has produced a fine and entertaining piece of biblical fiction, well worth the time for those who enjoy the genre.
Song of Hannah.......2007-03-15
Enjoy the historical fiction. This was a very good book and most interesting.

Interesting.......2007-01-09
I'm finding this book very enjoyable and I'm learning some facts. For me, this is a book that I can put down for a few minutes, although I do like finishing the chapter first. I do recommend it.
Book Description
The Bible is well-known for its wisdom on spiritual concerns and righteous living. But did you know it can also guide you in matters of dating, courtship, and marriage?
"Based on what God knows about us," says Tommy Nelson, "He has provided an instruction manual in the Song of Solomon with eight very enlightening, explicit, and highly practical chapters on the topics of love, sex and intimacy."
Wise and engaging, The Book of Romance digs deep into the Song of Solomon and what it says about the Bible's most passionate lovers. As you learn about their relationship, you'll discover how you, too, can experience the deep emotional, sexual, and spiritual satisfaction that God created to be enjoyed in marriage.
Customer Reviews:
Song - it is not only a love story, but INSTRUCTIONS !.......2007-09-04
This book goes line by line explaining the whole chapter. I loved it.... Now I understand - it is not only a love story, but instructions - exact instructions - on how you are to treat each other in marriage... it is an exact example on how to date, select a mate, wedding vows and promises, marriage, make love, conflict resolution, it has it all ! I have read so many books on how to make a marriage work... how to argue fair, be loving, be respectful, how to EVERYTHING, but this one is straight from the BIBLE... can't get any better than that !
The very best wedding present !
A must read for any one.......2006-02-25
This book was a great book in that the author was right on target. I learned alot about marriage and now my husband is reading the book. We have both agreed that our three daughters will read the dating and courtship sections before they are allowed to date. Then as they approach maturity and marriage, they will read the rest. The conflict resolution chapters for marriage gave great insight on how men and women think and how to approach a problem and resolve it. It is rare to come across a book on romance that is so biblically founded and so on target. I highly recommend it for everyone!!!
Bold Title.......2005-11-02
This book's title is "The Book of Romance: What Solomon Says About Love, Sex, and Intimacy"... from the way it is written, a better title might have been "The Book of Romance: What Tommy Nelson Says About Love, Sex, and Intimacy."
While refering to the Song of Solomon in each chapter, most chapters are his own musings on the topics of love, sex, and intimacy. It is of course quite alright from him to write from his own personal experience on these topics, but when the book as presented as what Solomon and his experience can teach us about love, that's where I check out.
Nevertheless, the book does present insight/knowledge that has and will be useful for many, but don't think that what he says will necessarily flow directly from scripture.
Christian Sexuality.......2005-08-22
Tommy Nelson does a great job of dispelling the myth that sensuality is not for us Christians. A really fun read.
Wonderful!.......2005-06-11
This book gives direct how-tos about what should be expected in Godly relationships. It draws the line between dating and courting and takes the guess work out of what should be expected in both.
This is a must read for singles and a should read for those who are married or getting married and want more insight into how to treat their spouse.
Product Description
God created his children as sexual opposites, and designed marriage to be the context of erotic pleasure. While the church has been mostly silent on the subject of sex, the world and the devil have attempted to make it their domain. The church has rightly proclaimed biblical prohibitions on the misuse of sex, but it has failed to speak out on the godliness of erotic pleasure in the context of marriage. Out of 66 books composing the Bible, one whole book is dedicated to promoting erotic pleasure - Song of Solomon. Michael Pearl takes his readers through a refreshing journey of Biblical texts. This sanctifying look at the most powerful passion God ever created will free the reader from false guilt and inhibition.
Customer Reviews:
Poorly prepared, written..........2007-08-14
This isn't so much a 'bad' book as it is inferior to several other excellent books by authors with far better backgrounds in scriptural study and relationship counseling. Pearl's examination of the Song of Solomon is generally accurate as far as it goes, but his ability to "mine" for insight is weak. If you are looking for a book that will enrich your relationship, I recommend "Love Life" by Ed Wheat, or "The Book of Romance: What Solomon Says About Love, Sex and Intimacy" by Tommy Nelson. Both authors, especially Nelson, offer a much more qualified and far more insightful view of the Song of Solomon.
When not discussing the S.o.S., Pearl loses ground even further; he apparently has only his personal marriage experience to draw on. Also, frankly, many of his comments are crude, and some of his translations of other scriptures are patently false. Beyond that, Pearl offers his own opinion as a statement of moral truth several times in the novel, with no scriptural backing. He's just not that talented of an author.
Great insight into how God views sex!.......2007-07-25
Both my husband and I enjoyed this book and it opened our eyes to see the truth.
Truly Holy Sex.......2007-03-03
We have been changed by the biblical concepts in this book. For far too long the enemies of The Bible have taught that sex was forbidden fruit. This small book takes the opposite view. The truth that we have learned is that the very best sexual experience is reserved for those who need not be ashamed. It is my heartfelt desire that everyone find the joy that my wife and I have found.
Fresh and Honest.......2006-08-21
I enjoyed the openness with which Michael Pearl approached this subject. The verse-by-verse analysis of the Song of Solomon was very refreshing and eye-opening. This is a valuable resource for those who may be hesitant to open up to their spouses because of past sexual encounters and/or abuses. Christians need to be reminded that they can have a healthy, passionate sexual relationship with their spouse because God created them for each other.
A practical wedding gift that will far outlive the blender!

"ONCE UPON A TIME"
IS TIMELESS
Young, beautiful, and wealthy, Emma Pennington is accustomed to a very comfortable life. Although war rages abroad, she hardly feels its effect. She and her mother travel from their home in Britain to the family estate in Belgium, never imagining that the war could reach them there. But it does.
Soon Emma finds herself stranded in a war-torn country, utterly alone. Enemy troops fight to take over her estate, leaving her with no way to reach her family, and no way out.
With all of her attention focused on survival and escape, Emma hardly expects to find love. But the war will teach her that life is unpredictable, people aren't always what they seem, and magic is lurking everywhere.

Best Once Upon a Time book YET!!!.......2007-06-14
So I wasn't expecting much because frankly I wasn't into Weyn's retelling of The Night Dance, but Water Song was SO GOOD! I loved it. I read up til page 15 the first day and the next night I finished the whole thing. Even after I finished it at 4AM I couldn't go to sleep. The historical bits were pretty accurate (from what I can remember from U.S. History class) and I was cheering the characters on every step of the way. High recommended to... well if you're reading this then you're already sucked in.
Disappointing...and silly, too........2007-01-14
I've read nearly all the books in the Once Upon A Time series, and I was looking forward to this one. However, it was quite a disappointing read. I didn't mind the beginning of the story; it started out okay, although it did seems to skip over a lot of things that might have made it easier to connect with the heroine. For example, her mother is killed by German bombs (this is set in WWI) while she is sitting next to her. We only hear about this, but don't actually experience it with Emma, the heroine. Not that I have a need to experience gruesome deaths, but I felt like the author just didn't feel like spending a lot of time developing Emma's character or her backstory. Suzanne Weyn doesn't spend a lot of time on the hero, Jack, either. She does take the time to explain that he knows some Native American/Creole healing potions that he learned from his mother. He apparently also learned how to "talk" to his mother's spirit, and maybe to even transport his spirit to other places...? What?? I think this is Weyn's way of introducing the "frog prince" connection; Jack is from the bayou and is a terrific swimmer, and his mother repeatedly "speaks" to him in dreams and tells him how he is a prince, and how he knows the water, etc. Emma and a minor character are both rescued from water by Jack while both are unconscious; this adds to the mystery -- "Who was that frog-man that rescued me?" Emma even asks Jack if he has magic to turn himself into a frog. This question, while German bombs explode outside, is just a bit of a silly paradox between fantasy and reality. I really think that Weyn makes the frog connection within the first part of the book. There are enough water references. She doesn't need to go so far as to have Jack's frogginess brought up nearly every page. Okay!! We get it!! Jack is the frog prince!! It just becomes silly, and almost seems like she is trying too hard. She didn't try too hard to create the relationship between the hero and heroine, though. They don't really have a relationship. I was surprised and bored when they decided they were in love with each other. They don't really have much connection at all, and therefore I didn't feel like I had any connection to them either. Weyn tries to make this a psychological fairy tale as many of the others in the series are. Themes of finding yourself, loving who you are, discovering truth, etc. are part of many of these books, but Weyn's efforts fall flat. She does try near the end of the story to have Jack realize that he is a great man, because Emma loves him, but that he was great all along, and it took her love to make him realize what was already true. Weyn's rendition of this self-discovery is even more awkward than the sentence I just wrote. What a shame. I was hoping it would be as good as some of the others in the series, but it wasn't. The best one so far in the series: The Storyteller's Daughter, by a LANDSLIDE. Read it and be satisfied.
Not So Great: SOME SPOILERS.......2006-11-13
I quite like the "Once Upon a Time" series. They are usually fresh and original. Water Song is the 10th in this series. Some of the books are better than others and so I bought Water Song with some trepidation. I perhaps should have been more cautious. While there are some original, creative elements in the book, such as turning the "frog" into an American soldier from Louisiana, and the golden ball into a locket, the plot itself is almost painful to read. The first time the American soldier sees the heroine Emma he wants her love (pg. 33). Emma is continually frustrated with him (with good reason) and yet somehow this translates into her loving him. They seem to have a continually rocky relationship while falling in love with each other more and more. I do realize this is a fairy tale but the plot is highly unlikely. Call me a pessimist but the "love at first sight" aspect of the story is cliche and unrealistic.
Another great Once upon a Time book.......2006-10-30
I've just resently started reading the once upon a time books and have really enjoyed all of them so far. Water Song was no different. The story was original and the characters interesting. WWI and the frog prince were not something I'd think to put together. If you are a fan of the others in this series I would imagine you'd like this one too. It has a little less magic then some of the books, but I really don't think it distracts for the story at all. Magic is where you see it after all.
More historical fiction instead of fairy tale fantasy.......2006-10-25
"Water Song" is the latest release in the "Once Upon a Time" series, in which current teen authors take different fairy tales and put their own spin on each story.
"Water Song" is based on the "Frog Prince" fairy tale, which, in all fairness, doesn't have a lot to go on. Kudos to the author for taking such a short (and relatively conflict-free) story and fleshing it out into a retelling set in World War I Europe.
The story follows Emma, a young British teenager who finds herself on the WWI battlefront, unable to leave for home and alone in the world after her mother is killed in a recent bombing. She encounters Jack, a wounded American soldier, and cares for him at her family's estate while enemy soldiers take over and occupy her home.
As a historical fiction book, I thought this was great. As a fairy tale retelling, I thought it was lacking a little. It's obvious who the princess and the frog are, but what's not so obvious is the use of magic (other than some events the characters can't explain and healing ability). In many respects, the author could have taken the use of magic out of the book and it would have been a stronger story. Another element that seemed poorly used was the secret of the locket. We spend most of the story wondering what exactly makes the locket special. When we finally do find out, it's rather ordinary and anti-climactic, and it's introduced quickly and discarded even faster.
As Emma and Jack are both on the same side of the war, it's easy to view the German soldiers occupying her home as "the enemy." Granted, the books in this series are supposed to be quick reads. But some characterization on the part of the Germans - showing their human side, not the sterotypical bad guy way they're drawn - would have made them more interesting to read about.
If you're new to the series, start with Suzanne Weyn's other book "Night Dance" or any of the Dokey books. Those are more solid fairy tale retellings.
As far as "Water Song" goes - promising premise, but incomplete delivery.

Excellent Christian Fiction.......2007-09-13

I loved It!.......2006-09-03
I simply loved this book! Jesse is a scarred man who believes no woman can love him because of his scars but runaway Kaylynn proves to him that even though she is battered and bruised she can love him. Its a beautiful story and one I would reccomend to anyone.
Could've been great!.......2002-03-01
This is the second book I've read by Madeline Baker.
Kaylynn Summers is a white woman, fleeing an abusive husband. She is captured and enslaved by Cheyenne Indians who treat her better than her husband. She is won in a horse race by Jesse who becomes her new 'owner.' What follows is a typical, `run away until I realize I love you' style romance, with nothing but predictable villains, plot twists and ending.
I would really like to see Madeline Baker write a historical novel. Her talent really shines when writing about the Indians and their way of life. What didn't work in this novel, which is ironic, is the romance.
I found Kaylynn, a shallow superficial heroine, more concerned about her broken nails than anything else. The hero, Yellow Thunder was more worried about his scarred face than romancing the heroine. Both characters seemed to have a lot of 'growing up' to do. The only, vaguely appealing character was a minor character named Ravenhawk, who was quite a bit more interesting than Yellow Thunder.
For me, this book fails and disappoints, mainly because it is very close to what a good novel should be. If Madeline would only concentrate on making her main characters more mature and appealing, I would be an avid fan.
Madeline Baker Delivers A Ten Star Novel!.......2000-07-31
A page turner from page one, Madeline Baker pulls you into the story with the first written paragraph. Jesse Yellow Thunder, although, a half breed and bounty hunter, represents the best of both worlds. He is a man with morals and convictions and in his heart lies a deep sense of needing to be loved. His scarred face is a burried pain embedded deep in his heart. Kaylynn is a beautiful captive and when they meet, hearts entertwine and souls touch. She has never known love, although the terror and pain of an abusive husband. Together, they learn that love is a healing of the soul that can overcome any obstacle in their way.
Spirit Walker's poems were heart-rendering and held a depth of love that none can match. My compliments to a poet that wrote the word love in so many ways, it captured the heart of this reader!
a great book.......1999-12-19
I enjoy every one of her books from start to end. I like this the more for a reason. Some time all people feel like yellow ulgy and not pretty, and at the end her got the girl.
I Loved It!.......1999-06-29
I have read almost all Madeline's Baker's books. I really enjoyed the way this particular book grabs you from the first page and does not let go. Jesse Yellow Thunder was a hero with physical flaws, which was realistic. Not the typical "perfect" man. The story was a wild ride with an ending worth waiting for. Even though you can almost always predict love will triump, it's still great when it does.

My young daughter loves this book. She knows the tune from one of the Putamayo CD's (Dan Zanes sings this song.) Too sweet.

Most, Most ENJOYABLE!!!! I've sung this song to my grandchildren for over 25 years, and I was most delighted to see it in a book with the music.
I love the song - - I ADORE this book!!.......2006-11-10
I came across this book while searching for the lyrics to the 'Bushel & A Peck' song from the 'Guys and Dolls' soundtrack. My grandmother used to sing the song to my mother and my mother used to sing the song to my sister and I. In keeping tradition, we both now sing the song to our children and I was so excited when I found this book! The kids love the little duck characters as they sing the song through the vibrantly colored pages. We all 'doodle oodle oodle' through the end!! If you like the song - - you will absolutely love the book!!
Love this book!.......2005-09-20
My 2 1/2 year old twins love it when I sing this song to them, so I was thrilled to find a book that illustrated it. The pictures are bright and fun, and it's always nice when the publisher includes the lyrics/music, as it does in this one.
My Kids LOVE This Book.......2005-09-17
My mother taught this song to me when I was little & now I can share it with my children too. The pictures are bright & engaging. My three year old & 16 month old both like to "read" the book & we sing the song together when we are finished.

La Jill Hunt once again delivers with a great novel. I have read ALL of her books and love ALL of them! Keep it up La Jill!
Ridiculous Blessing.......2006-12-12
Another Sad Love Song presents JaKoby Jackson, a good brother who comes from a good family. He's kind, considerate and loving. Education in fact is a big priority of his, seeing that he's just earned his masters degree and possibly has landed himself a great gig. The only thing missing is his soul mate. The woman he thought was the one, turned out to be a fraud. As he's healing from her misuse of him, he and his best friend, Dorian Silver, enjoy the nightlife.
As Koby falls in line at work, he discovers Chryslin Matthews, the woman he'd been involved in an accident with. They laugh as they discuss her driving, insurance and the fact that they are now employed at the same company. Although Chryslin literally ran into JaKoby, he immediately wants to ensure that she's receiving precisely everything that she needs.
It takes sometime before Koby and Chrys are open and honest with one another about their situations, but it's not long before the two become a joyous couple and partake in all of the fun of being newly involved. A startling revelation sends Chrys to Atlanta for an undisclosed amount of time. Playing phone tag works for awhile, but Koby allows jealousy to rear its ugly head. Can you trust the one you're with if that someone is far away?
Another Sad Love Song was an adorable book. I enjoyed the characters and the connections. Each chapter is a song title. I'm not really a fan of LOVE stories per se, but I think people looking for something to jolt their memories about love, or the hopes of attaining it will find this as a good read. Fans who are accustomed to La Jill dramas will be content.
This was the first book I've read by LaJill Hunt, but it won't be the last..........2006-11-04
"Another Sad Love Song" by LaJill Hunt is a fast, satisfying read that deals with two persons trying to cope with baggage from past relationships as they embark on a new romance.
Jakoby Jackson is one of the good guys - he's educated, hardworking and faithful when in a relationship. He's recovering from a broken heart and not really looking for love. However, when Chryslin crashes into his newly gifted Mercedes Benz, Jakoby is intrigued with her from the beginning.
It seems fate has intervened when Jakoby encounters Chryslin days after starting a new, esteemed job. Chryslin works in the same building and this allows Jakoby to pursue his growing interest in her.
The road to happiness does not come without roadblocks or detours, however. LaJill Hunt develops an intriguing story with enough twists and turns to keep the reader on the edge of the seat with anticipation. It makes for a quick read, but one that is very enjoyable.
Nice Read.......2006-11-02
I enjoyed this book very much. It is a nice romantic read and I found myself feeling as if I knew the individuals. Keep up the good work.
Book Description
A storm brought them together
Without warning, a ferocious storm in the Queen Charlotte Islands plunged Janna Morgan into the frigid sea. But before she could sink into the depths of the choppy waters, an arm reached out through the darkness, pulling Janna to safety.
Her savior was Carlson Raven, and he was as untamed and enigmatic as the sea he loved. Stranded together in a deserted paradise, Raven was instantly aware of his intense yearning for the courageous woman he'd rescued. And he was powerless to resist her beauty. But could Raven really believe that the look in Janna's eyes was love, and not merely gratitude?

Embarassingly bad...........2003-08-04
"Love Song For a Raven" had the potential to be fantastic, but the writing and the dialogue were so flowery and ridiculous that I couldnt help but cringe. I thought that the characters were woefully underdeveloped and the love between them blossomed so fast that it bordered on unbelievable. Raven was ok..but his whole "Gratitude/Love" thing grew tired..and Janna was just plain annoying...I would have given this only 1 star, but it IS an Elizabeth Lowell and this was OBVIOUSLY one of her earlier efforts. All in all I definitely would NOT recommend this.

Love song for my heart.......2001-01-29
If I ever had a perfect fantasy, this would be it. Gorgeous hunk of native american man rescues unhappy, insecure female. She of course is gorgeous in her own way. This is my favorite Lowell book, I have bought it 3 times, cause when I loan it out, no one will return it! The best!
Tepid. Not one of her best........2001-01-03
I read this one not knowing that it was a sequel. Maybe if I had read "A Woman Without Lies" first I might have had a better appreciation for the characters here. The plotline is pretty thin: Guy rescues girl. Less than a week later, girl is in love with guy. Guy has a kind of 'inferiority complex' that gets in the way of their relationship. The setting is supposedly in contemporary Canada, but you don't get much of a feel for it since most of the story took place either on the boat or on the deserted island with no other people around. Although the story squeezed a few tears from me, I would've liked more excitement & adventure in it. "Lover in the Rough" was much better.
Book Description
Originally published in 1957, The Flower Drum Song was a groundbreaking work of popular literature. An immediate bestseller, it inspired the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical. This charming, bittersweet tale of romance and the powerful bonds of family tells the story of Wang Ta, who wants what every young American man wants: a great career and a woman to love. Living in San Francisco's Chinatown-with his widowed father, Old Master Wang, who misses the old way of life in China, and his younger brother, who just wants to be a normal American teenager-Wang Ta becomes involved with a series of women as he searches for love and the American dream. Comic, poignant, and sexy, The Flower Drum Song is an astute portrayal of immigrants struggling with assimilation. This edition features a new introduction by David Henry Hwang.

Episodic, No Clear Ending, Not that Great.......2007-01-21
I am not Chinese American, and I have never seen the play, television show, or movie, so this review is about the book only. Other works based loosely off this book could be excellent, but I can only evaluate what I know.
The book itself deals with two major characters -- The Old Master, Chi-Yang Wang, and his son Ta Wang. The title refers to an old traditional folk song sung by a servant they hire in the third portion of the book, and may be a contrast between traditional and modern in the overtheme.
I loved the irascible character of Old Master Wang, how he was stern with fulfilled ambitions, having lived a good fruitful life. How he enjoyed his cough and calligraphy, and how he expected filial discipline while loving his family drew me into the lifestyle portrayed in the novel. His son Ta struck me as a person with a good upbringing who drifted through life, not really knowing or attempting to discover his talents. Ta is only interested in getting married, and his scenes reflect this fruitless quest in a society with the pressures of six men to one woman.
In redux, Chi-Yang = awesome patriarch, Ta = wimpy prince with no horse.
Other characters were present in the novel, but by far they had less dimension than the Wangs, who the narrator followed the lives of nearly exclusively. Only about a third of the novel focuses on Chi-Yang Wang, and the rest of it isn't filled out enough for my tastes. Perhaps if Ta wasn't always in a never-ending angst over women, I might have found more inside the book.
Almost four stars, except the actual ending leaves much unresolved in the house of Wang. This made me like the novel much less. Books with as many loose ends as the Flower Drum Song, I don't even consider complete. Perhaps one of the musicals or dramas has a better ending than the book, which basically cuts off right after a life-changing climax and leaves the reader wondering what happened.
Before Amy Tan there was Ching Yang Lee.......2003-01-06
I read this book many years ago and enjoyed so much that I have read everything I could find by Mr. Lee, and since then other Chinese American authors.
It is a shame that for so many years the book was rejected by young Asian Americans as being "too white face" or "Uncle Tom" as it is not so at all. C.Y. Lee was a Chinese immigrant and wrote of the society as he saw it at that time, which is not the way the younger generation, who did not live through the immigrant experience, want to see it. This is not unusual, many well schooled, well fed sucessful Americans do not want to know that their grandparents arrived in steerage with their belongings tied up in kit bag, unable to speak the language, and worked 18 hours a day in menial jobs so that their children could get ahead.
This is a poignant story of Chinese immigrant families in Southern California during the days of the Chinese Exclusion Act, and the difficulty the young American-raised men had in finding a wife. They were not allowed to bring women in from China, and they were not permitted to marry non Asians. Because of the Communist takeover, many Chinese who had dreamed of returning home to China when they retired after working all their lives were unable to do so. The situtation created an artifically stressed society. The book has tragedy and sadness, as well as hope and joy.
My only criticism of the novel, and a mild one at that, is that it frequently reads like a play script, especially in the last chapter, where there is a lot of dialogue, followed by descriptions of the action which read like stage directions. It is possible that the novel was orignally intended to be a play.
Warning, possible spoiler:
The musical version of the book which was also filmed was very loosely based on the novel, in fact one of the major characters was created for the musical. Apparently this has been done again with the new version playing on Broadway. Readers expecting to find a printed version of the musical may be disappointed.
A Great Literature for the Ages.......2003-01-05
As a child, I saw the film "Flower Drum Song" and fell in love with the film. Though at the time, it was considered a no-no amongst the Chinese community. But none of those who scorn the film had even read either the book or seen the film. It was a beautiful made film that featured Asian actors who sing, dance, performed to a melodic score by one of the most creative song writing team. Therefore, I am so glad that this book is finally come to light and to be re-embraced into literary culture. Perhaps it will hopefully quail those critics who are as narrow-minded as those who thought we are just busboys and Charlie Chans. Be enlightened, and read this great piece of story-telling of a familial saga that we can all relate--regardless if we are Chinese or not. Enjoy, read and be enchanted. As well check out the film--it might change one's opinion.
Stands the test of time.......2002-08-28
Originally published in 1957, this poignant and charming novel tells of a young man's struggle to fit in. Love, family and all the ups and downs that go with them are told with bittersweet humor. Its re-release is a wonderful companion to David Henry Hwang's new theatrical book which revives the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical on Broadway this year. Hurrah!
A charming.......1999-11-03
My mother has always told me of a beautiful Rogers & Hammerstein musical called "Flower Drum Song". I bought the CD and found it simply splendid. However, my appreciation of the musical has only been enhanced by reading the novel it was based on by the author CY Lee. The story follows the intrigues of a Chinese emigrant family living in San Fransisco. It is romantic, in parts funny and a pleasure to read. I thoroughly recommend it.
