4 out of 5 stars fun read.......2007-09-19

I really liked this series, It was a good read. I didn't think I would like it when I read the first book, but once I started reading, I wanted to finish the whole series.

5 out of 5 stars I loved it!.......2007-03-09

Personally I don't really like to read so the books that I actually do are usually pretty good. I was afraid that I would not know what was going on since it was a sequel but I wasn't the least bit lost at all. This book was perfect it had so much going on and it kept you waiting to see what would happen next. I could not put this book down; I read it all within a week. Herbie Brennan did a wonderful job and I look forward to reading the first book. It had the perfect balance between action, romance, drama, a bit of horror. It had it all! It had such a wide variety of characters from little worms that lived inside your head, an actual human, fairies, and more.

4 out of 5 stars Review for Purple Emperor.......2006-07-06

This book is as exciting and full of mystery, suspense, and fantasy just like Faerie Wars. I liked all the new, interesting characters in the Purple Emperor, but i think i liked the first book better, i'm not sure why, it just kinda left you wondering and i liked that. I did like how the Purple Emperor was based more in the faerie realm instead of the analogue world it drew you in more than the parts based in normal life.

2 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2006-04-30

I read and enjoyed The Faerie Wars a few months ago, and so was excited to start the sequel when I came across it. My excitement waned as I got into the book, however. There were three things that particularly disappointed me.
Through most of the book, there are a number of subplots happening simultaneously which come together in the climax. Brennan breaks the subpolts up into small peices, telling about this one for a few pages and then that one for a few pages, and then this other one, and then back to the first one, and so on. It seems that he wants to create suspense and keep the reader engaged, however for me it just made the book awkward and choppy. I had some trouble keeping the plots straight and understanding why certain episodes were significant to the overall story. There are some that I still think are totally irrelevant.
I realize that this is a work of fantasy and not meant to be realistic or anything, but some of the things we encounter in the book are completely unbelievable. He introduces a whole new group of faeries, the forest faerie, who are very numerous, have advanced technology, and are skilled fighters. Where did these guys come from? How did they get so good at combat if they've been hiding in the forest and never fighting anyone? And how is it that they're so numerous and yet have never been detected? It just doesn't add up for me. It seemed a quick, cop-out way to get things done. Like he needed a force to take on the deamon army, so he made these guys come out of the woodwork.
Then there's the ending. I didn't appreciate the values that are condoned in the ending of the book. I'm not going to tell any interested readers exactly what happens except that the main characters, the "heroes," pull off a very significant act of deception in order to get their way. While it does end up leading to a happy ending, I can't accept that they got there by immoral means and got out of accepting responsibility for their actions.
So in general, I was didn't like this book a whole lot. I won't be reading the next sequel should there be one.

3 out of 5 stars Action-Packed but Lacking as a Sequel ..........2006-04-24

In his sequel to 'Faerie Wars', Herbie Brennan offers up plenty of action, thrills, chills, and suspense, but 'The Purple Emperor' sadly does not stand up to the standards set by its prequel.

Pyrgus Malvae is about to be crowned Purple Emperor, and he is dreading every part of his new found power. All to suddenly, the body of the soon-to-be-burried former Purple Emperor, Pyrgus and Holly Blue's father, has been stolen and resurrected back to life by their old enemy, Black Hairstreak. Meanwhile, former characters are plotting their own schemes, as Jasper Chalkhill, the flamboyant spy for Hairstreak, is pulled out of jail and has a physchic wyrm inserted into his bottom (no joke) in order to help assasinate Pyrgus for Hairstreak. And also, the old demonologist Brimstone has been hiding out with his new, and very temporary, wife until Beleth makes him an offer he can't refuse. Eventually, all of these character's paths cross in a monumental battle of wits and danger.

Sounds confusing, but Brennan weaves the multi-plot strands relatively well. The story unfolds in short chapters, unlike its prequel, and the majority of the story is furiously-paced, almost too fast. The whole beginning was a blur, and Brennan rushed it way too quickly. The characters are so quickly thrown in the action, I felt as if I was on the sidelines watching instead of actually involved in the story. Brennan's own demise is the rushed pacing and how fast he tried to set up the plot and action, as it stopped him from forming the solidity of a good beginning and base for the remainder of the story. The faerie realm felt very empty as I was pulled along by the fast pace, but once you get past the bad beginning, the rest of the story is a action-packed adventure that leads to a shocking ending.

Bogged down by a rushed beginning, 'The Purple Emperor' eventually closes with a strong conclusion and I only recommend it to fans of the first book who like Brennan's use of suspense and action. Here's hoping the third book, 'Ruler of the Realm', returns to the qualities that made the first book enjoyable, yet believable, fantasy.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not a fantastic sequel, but its adequate. .......2007-09-21

I really loved the first book in this series, and I was excited to read the second one "prophecy of the bane" I have to admit that I didn't like this one as much.
In the first, Gregor returns after going on his quest to save the underlanders and their world. We met the Giant Bats, and Rats, and Roaches and are taken for an amazing journey under the streets of New York City. In this book Gregor is back home, where things are miserable, so he takes his toddler sister Boots to the park where she is kidnapped by the giant roaches. Of course Gregor follows her down and he finds out that the Underlanders took her to protect her from the Rats, and that lo and behold there is another prophecy concerning Gregor and he has to yet again save Regalia from the Rats, well a particular rat called the Bane. This mythical rat is supposedly all white and will lead the rats to destroy the underlanders unless Gregor kills it. Not once did Gregor say "hello underlanders you knew there were other prophecies the last time I was here why didn't you tell me!" No, the underlanders resort to kidnapping poor Boots to get Gregor back down!
So Gregor trains to fight, and realizes that he has superhuman reflexes, he is a "Rager" but no where in this book does this skill come into play, maybe the next? Gregor and his merry band of fireflies (to light the way), underlanders, roaches, Bats, and rats set out to kill the Bane in a boat. There is one new character, TwitchTip, who is a rat with a talent to smell things. She can smell what color shirt you are wearing miles away, which way to turn in a tunnel, what dangers are up ahead. I loved her; she was the best part of this book, wonderfully written. The best part to me is when she was stuffing cotton up her nose so she didn't have to smell the humans!
I wont give the ending away, but I will say that to me it never seemed to come to a climax, or satisfy the reader in me who wants some sort of closure. The action, the plot and the treatment of Gregor just managed to disappoint me. I have not however given up on the series; I will just treat this second book as a segue to the third book, since at the end of this one we know Gregor isn't finished with the Underland.

4 out of 5 stars World Below New York City.......2007-02-25

GREGOR AND THE PROPHECY OF THE BANE is on this year's Sequoyah list at school. I ready to my 9-year-old all the time, and I enjoy exploring kids' books. I'd seen these books before, but I hadn't really picked one up. Now my son and I find ourselves hooked on Suzanne Collins's marvelous tales.

Gregor lives a hard existence with his parents. It seems his dad was lost in the Underland for a long time before Gregor found a way to rescue him. That story is told in Book 1.

This book begins as Gregor is struggling trying to help the family make ends meet financially. Gregor's father hasn't been able to go back to work and they have difficulty even getting enough to eat. While he's sledding in the park with Boots, his little sister, Gregor finds that she's disappeared. When he realizes that Boots is missing, he goes after her and journeys back into the Underland.

The story is filled with dangerous escapes and evil villains. My son and I thrilled to the heroic twists and turns of the plots and the characters, as well as the rich humor laced through the tale. The pacing in the story is incredibly fast.

Gregor learns that a new prophecy is in effect, and he's the warrior that's referred to. He's supposed to kill the Bane, the evil ruler of the rats. Temp the cockroach and his friends captured Boots because they feared the rats were going to take her.

The misunderstanding between Gregor and his bond-mate bat, Ares, is well done. Their friendship deepens in this novel, and they're a great team to read about. Not all of the companions that go on the quest come back. Although death is presented in the pages, it's not too gruesome or gory. But there are losses.

Although the ending satisfies, it does leave you wanting more. My son and I are going to pick up the third book next, but we want to go back and read the first one as well since we missed that one. Fans of fantasy, Harry Potter, and Artemis Fowl will enjoy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Another big hit!.......2007-02-13

This book is the 2nd in the Underland Chronicles. I read the first book to my kids and they couldn't wait for the second. I was a little apprehensive at first. I was afraid that this book would be a lot like the first. It wasn't! It held it's own. Gregor and his little sister "Boots" go back down to the Underworld (not by choice) and are taken into another adventure with the Prophecy of Bane. There they have to stop the rats again. They have a secret weapon that could destroy the Underworld. Gregor sets out with some new characters and some old ones and finds that the secret weapon isn't what they thought it would be. You'll need to read more to find out. Can't wait to read the third book!

5 out of 5 stars "Die the Baby, Die His Heart, Die His Most Essential Part".......2006-12-12

"Will the warrior drain your light?"

--- The Prophecy of Bane

In "Gregor and the Prophecy of Bane," Gregor is surprised once again to find himself heading deep under New York, to the Underland. His little two-year-old sister, Margaret ("Boots"), has been spirited away and he learns that the Underlanders believe that rats wish to kill her --- hoping to cause Gregor's "most essential part" (his heart) to die before he can kill the Bane. The Bane is a vicious white rat, who Gregor is supposed to be prophesied to kill.

As Gregor undertakes a new journey, he learns many new and startling things about himself and faces great loss. But in a story where nothing is as it seems, Gregor finds that little can truly be known before the fact and hope can be found when one has reached the depths of despair. He also meets many new allies, such as Twitchtip and Howard and discovers things he never knew about old ones, such as Luxa and his bond, Aries.

I found this to be another moving edition in the series and I think it's a wonderful story for those who enjoy series such as "Harry Potter." I'm a fan of Suzanne Collins, having seen her television writing work for such programs as "Little Bear" and "JoJo's Circus." With this second edition in The Underland Chronicles, Collins proves herself once again of writing a top-notch novel for young adults, and readers of all ages (well, except maybe those who are very young --- this may be a bit too disturbing for them.)

Audiobook Review:

I have also listened to this book on six-disc audio CD set. Released by Listening Library (who also bring you Jim Dale's "Harry Potter" audiobooks), this edition of the story is a masterful telling by Paul Boehmer (of "Frasier" and "Judging Amy," among others.) Boehmer brings the story fully to life as he conveys the tides of emotion in Gregor, the cries and playing of his sister Boots, the regal tone of various Underlanders, the savage ferocity of Ripred (underlaid by intelligence and a surprising compassion) and much more.

4 out of 5 stars Tragedy.......2006-10-08

This book was great. It had adventure and action beyond belief. Warning: Contents contain extreme violence. But it was also a tragedy. Some charatcters you may have loved from Gregor the Overlander are killed off, not to mention charaters who were created in this book die. Suzane Colins didn't go as heavy on the tragedy portion in the last book. Characters died and all but all of them were either minor, unintresting or the bad guy. In The Prophecy of Bane a bat is killed along with a roach and a human and her bat. It is great but a real tragedy. So when reading this don't expect a to happy of an ending.

5 out of 5 stars Monsters are your friends.......2007-03-23

Monsters are not monsters at all in this great read. I enjoyed reading this as a bedtime story. It was a little tough to stop and display the illustrations to kids on a bunk bed, but the pictures are just too good and meant to be shared.

4 out of 5 stars A Dodgy Tanner.......2006-11-14

If you ask me, HERE BE MONSTERS! is no classic, not even a keeper. I tried reading this book to some kids, and they weren't even interested an iota. Even some English children visiting San Francisco turned their nose up at it, seeing it for what it is, a goodhumored attempt to capture some of the late Roald Dahl's popularity by marrying his "children come first" philosophy to the epic fantasy saga plot of Philip Pullman or whoever the latest upstart is. That's where the big money is, you see. I will say that three of the children (ages 4-7) enjoyed Snow's cross hatched drawings of the many inventivce creatures who populate his underground kingdom. Where I see sloppy sub-par Tenniel drawings, children see the many-shadowed intimations of adulthood drawing around them like night shades. I expect that Snow will bewitch some readers, especially those with visual acuity, while turning off some with his witless puns ("I'm a BIG CHEESE") and the incredibly longwinded storytelling--five hundred pages, and this is just volume one! Does he farm out the drawings to others? How does he get all his work done?

As for little Arthur, he was okay, with gumption to spare--but I hate gumption. Long ago there was a great novel for young people called THE GAMMAGE CUP by Carol Kendall--anyone remember this book? It had everything that HERE BE MONSTERS has and more (well, it didn't have MONSTERS' exclamation point, but it didn't need one) (indeed Grandma always said, never trust a book that tries to excite you with an exclamation mark)--only THE GAMMAGE CUP was a shapely 160 pages, so wouldn't make much of a splash in today's steroid driven market where the longer the better. In the meantime, I know a few kids who will be looking forward to the next installment of RATBRIDGE, and one of them has taken up drawing all by himself, after Snow, saying, "Kevin, look at Snow's people, the way they start out by being tic tac toe puzzles, then next time you look they have arms and legs and faces."

5 out of 5 stars Here be No Monsters.......2006-10-22

I was immediately drawn into Here be Monsters when I saw it on a shelf in a local bookstore. It is captivating, seeming to meld the curious Victorian imagery of Edmund Gorey with the density and endlessness of a 100 year old Sears Roebuck catalog.

But I have to be frank. My son has a very active imagination (read "nightmares") and I was not that interested in providing more grist for that mill!

So let me clear the air here. The only monsters are humans, and while they are dastardly and mean, they are not terrifying. Just the same mean, self-centered, narcissistic jerks that life is full of.

The so-called monsters in this book (boxtrolls, cabbageheads and the like) are charming, caring, thoughtful, and endearing. But not scary.

Please buy this book. Buy five copies. Buy ten. If only that you will bless five or ten children (so far I have tested on a five and a ten year old) with a sweet, fun, clever, creative romp through Ratbridge.

5 out of 5 stars "awesome".......2006-10-20

If it was up to me, every single person in the world would have a copy of this book. G-d knows everyone needs it. Sometimes you have to escape everyday life where your on the brink of being fired from your job and your kids (or if you're a kid, parents) are nagging you to do this or that and experiance the trust of the boxtrolls, kindness of Willbury and "Ratbridge Nautical laundry",and the absoulute senslesness of the "fashonable" ladies,Hexagonal buttocks anyone? Add a notorious plot, a few shady characters, and the mysterious "great one", and you've got a book guaranteed to satisfy all ages, kids and adults alike. All in all, this book is not one that you'll ever put down before the very last page.Hey, I didn't

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful family treat!.......2006-10-19

I read this book aloud to my children who are six and eight, they were entranced! As we got closer to the end we added extra reading times to move us along. It was a delight to read out loud as opposed to some of the other books my children have chosen. We can't wait for the next volume!

With the help of Simon the gooseboy and his flock, they escape. But how will they ever get Willoughby Chase free from the clutches of the evil Miss Slighcarp?

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars The Human Wolves are the Worst.......2007-08-04

This book will appeal to pre-teen girls, since the young
protagonists are two cousins who survive eerie events mainly because of their wits and their devotion to each other. Three new arrivals at Willoughby Chase--four hours from London--impact the quiet, country estate. On the eve of the parents' departure for sunny climes for the mother's delicate health, the kindly squire fails to scrutinize the face and motives of his distant cousin, one Miss Slighcarp. This classic villainess plans to curb Bonnie's impulsive nature and to cover timid Sylvia, once the adults have departed for their (ill-fated) voyage. Readers soon discover that this "governess" is not alone in her scheme to take over the estate and disinherit the girls.

This delightful book begs to be read aloud; it defies the usual genre definition, yet charms by its unique style. Referring to the title, wolves are indeed very much a part of this story, as they prove a real threat to human life in long ago England. Roaming in voracious packs they prove a nocturnal menace to children and adults alike. So who will protect these isolated little girls from the vicious predators--with four and two legs? Fortunately there are two loyal servants and an enterprising goose boy who stand by our heroines, stepping up bravely to defy Slighcarp and her cronies.

WOLVES is reminiscent of Dickens because of the strange names of many characters (personality hints) and the author's shocking expose of harsh conditions in an "orphanage," which seems more like a workhouse or prison. The children prove resourceful and pro-active in their own behalf---not the passive victims Miss Slighcarp expected. Thus the Deus ex Machina ending still satisfies. (I love the London cops riding confidently on the train out to the country, to teach the local constabulary their job!) WOLVES is a cute, clever and highly enjoyable read for kids of all ages!

4 out of 5 stars Drags a Bit - but Leaves an Impression (Spoiler-Free).......2007-03-17

Okay, hows this for a setup? The hugely rich Mr. Green a/k/a Sir Willoughby, his wife, his rambunctious little daughter Bonnie, and a small army or servants live in a vast mansion on grounds within a huge forest estate (a "chase") infested with ravenous man-eating wolves. The Greens have just adoped their timid orphaned neice Sylvia. No sooner has Sylvia arrived, however, when Mr. & Mrs. Green leave on a 6-month sea voyage in the hopes of benefitting the wife's ailing health. They leave the 2 girls, the servants, and the estate under the care and charge of their new governess, a distant cousin named Miss Slighcarp. Needless to say, Slighcarp is a villain, and she and her allies start showing their true colors the instant the Greens are out to sea. The Wolves, it seems, are not confined to the forest, and the children must beware.

It is very colorful, as well as unapologetically outrageous (man-eating wolves in snow-covered forests laying siege to railroad trains in the heart of England). However, if you are expecting a zany, silly, thrill-a-minute adventure, you may be disappointed. Aiken writes as though she takes it all dead seriously (this is, in fact, part of the appeal). There is significant attention to background and detail, much of which enhances the mood and atmosphere. She is less effective in pushing the story foreward, which progresses in fits and starts before meandering to a conclusion.

The lack of focus means, unfortunately, that there are many opportunities for the reader to lose patience and stop reading. This is a shame, for though Aiken's writings are not always compulsive page turners, she has an ability to weave memories that stay with the reader, and leave them hungry for more.

This book is the first in a series of about 11 books, which are now being called the "Wolves Chronicles". In the second book, "Black Hearts in Battersea" (another great title) it is made more explicit that they are set in an alternate-history England very different from our own.

If your child is one who tends not to finish books, I might be good to start with "Nightbirds on Nantucket" -- the third book in the series. As a child, it was "Nightbirds" that I first read all the way through. I then was sufficiently interested to go back and read "Wolves" and "Battersea" all the way through, despite having previously attempted them and put them down. This is perhaps not ideal, since it may spoil the impact of certain surprises, but it is better than not reading them at all.

4 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2006-11-22

Young Bonnie Green lives in the grand Willoughby Chase with her loving parents and an assortment of kind servants in Aiken's own altered version of Victorian-era England. Bonnie's mother has fallen ill and her father is taking her on an extended journey at sea. Bonnie's father has sent for a distant relative, Miss Slighcarp, to look after Bonnie and her cousin Sylvia who is arriving from London on the same day. Things quickly take a turn for the worse under Miss Slighcarp's care.

The Wolves of Willoughby Chase is a story full of hungry wolves, orphan schools, a boy and his geese, a trip by foot to London, parents that are presumed dead, kind doctors, and lying amnesiacs.

Thoroughly enjoyable.

The Wolves of Willoughby Chase is the first book in a series, thought Bonnie and Sylvia do not make appearances in subsequent books.

4 out of 5 stars Wolves.......2006-10-17

My dad read this to me when I was about 9, and I thought it was just the most fascinating story ever. I read it to my 9-year old sister a while ago, and she loved it just as much as I did.

The combination of danger (wolves, bad adults) with comfort and safety (warm mansion, cozy apartment, good adults) is irresistable. The contrast between cruelty (mean governesses, dungeons, starvation) and justice in the end makes for a truly satisfying read.

Now that I am older, I realize this book is not as well-written as I thought it was then. But that doesn't matter; the plot is exciting and perfect. I recommend this book for ages 8-13.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book, A Great Film, and...Dido Twite?.......2006-07-03

I was first introduced to The Wolves Of Willoughby Chase through the 1989 British-made film of the same name starring Stephanie Beacham (Miss Slighcarp), Mel Smith (Mr. Grimshaw), Emily Hudson (Bonnie), and Aleks Darowska (Sylvia). The film is superb and it is a shame that it is currently out of print almost everywhere (I had to order a poorly recorded VHS version from Canada in order to get a copy of it). I had never heard of the book or its author, Joan Aiken, before I saw the film. The book is even better than the film and should delight anyone who finds stories involving children, wolves, mansions, and evil governesses entertaining. Both the book and the film were childhood favorites of mine and I love them as much today as I did then. Upon purchasing the other five books in Joan Aiken's Wolves Chronicles (Blackhearts in Battersea, Nightbirds on Nantucket, The Cuckoo Tree, The Stolen Lake, and Dido and Pa), I was disappointed to learn that the other five books focus on the increasingly unwieldy adventures of Dido Twite, a character introduced in the second book. Bonnie and Sylvia Greene are never mentioned again. It is as if the last five books are a series and the first book stands alone as a separate story (the only element that links TWOWC to the other books is Simon, a character who appears again in the second book). I found this incongruency rather odd and irritating, but I'm sure that Dido Twite has her fans. Just don't read the other books expecting to hear more about Bonnie, Sylvia, and Willoughby Chase. TWOWC is truly a lone ranger.

Book Description

Anyone who’s ever wondered what happened to the girls in the exclusive cliques of adolescence will delight in The J.A.P. Chronicles. With the wry wit and keen eye and ear of a latter-day Jane Austen, Isabel Rose (herself a scion of a prominent New York family) provides the ultimate insider’s look at the glamorous upper-crust society that even Carrie Bradshaw would give her Jimmy Choos to join.

When seven former bunkmates at Willow Lake Camp reunite for the camp’s one hundredth anniversary, the event brings more than just a revival of the old camp spirit. Ali Cohen, an Oscar-nominated filmmaker and former camp outcast, plans to make a documentary about her former bunkmates. The ugly duckling turned successful self-made swan secretly hopes that that her teenage tormentors will have grown into adult losers.

As each woman steps into focus, however, it becomes clear that it is not quite that simple. Sure, Arden can’t keep a job (even as a nanny!), Jessica is stuck in regional theater, and Dafna has lost both her job and her $20,000 per month stipend from her father. But Laura is apparently flourishing as a Los Angeles superagent, and Beth has found happiness by throwing over her dull but successful fiancé for her wedding photographer. Even Wendy, golden girl turned Short Hills housewife, has managed to skirt around old regrets and long-stifled urges—until seeing an old acquaintance stirs them up again.

Funny, smart, and ultimately moving, The J.A.P. Chronicles opens a whole new perspective on the girls from the “best families” and on the money, culture, and expectations that define their lives.

1 out of 5 stars Great Premise, Poor Delivery.......2007-07-24

I liked the idea of this book--a group of girls who spent five or six summers together as cabin mates at a jewish camp are reunited nearly twenty years later. While the author did fulfill the "where are they now?" part of the equation, there was a complete lack of appreciation for what type of bond, if any, these women had as adolescents. I would have been happy with so much as a prologue setting the stage. There weren't even flashbacks. Also unconvincing was the choppiness of the book. Each chapter was like its own short story, each about a different cabin mate. There was nothing convincing at the end to tie each girl together and any overlap between chapters that was made was casually mentioned in a sentence or two that left me wondering, "when did that happen?". Rather than delving into the story, the author instead jumped far ahead in time through each chapter, sloppily tied up loose ends, and left me feeling jipped, (not JAPPED).

1 out of 5 stars so bad.......2007-05-25

This book was so boring, I didn't even finish it. That very rarely happens. I sold it to a used bookstore and they had 5 other copies already...

3 out of 5 stars Wasn't that great, wasn't that bad.......2007-05-22

The book was honestly not that bad but I do agree with others. It seems like she needed two more chapters so she added two more characters. Definetly not a book I would buy...if you have a library card, use that. Don't waste your money on it.

1 out of 5 stars Hated it........2007-02-14

Totally disappointing. I was looking for some easy reading chick lit, saw the cover of this book, scanned the back, and checked it out of the library - thankfully I didn't spend any money on it. I hated it - around page 38 I was pretty sure this wasn't what I'd hoped it would be, but I finished the book because I at least wanted to know what happened. Turns out, nothing worth reading happened.

On top of that, it's full of a lot of unecessary sexuality (and in a disturbing way, not even pleasant sex) as well as a lot of bad language. The writing isn't great, and there's not really a story - just a bunch of stories that are somehow tied together because the girls all know each other and some of them are in contact with each other.

Don't waste your time - find another book.

3 out of 5 stars Not fluffy, but not bad, either........2007-01-25

I started this book on my lunch hour yesterday, and stayed up late last night so I could finish it.

I thought it would be a funny, fluffy chick-lit novel, but it definitely is not that. However, it's not a terrible book, either. I think Rose spent too much time on some characters, and not enough on others. I enjoyed reading the novel, but it wasn't one of my top 10 reads.

5 out of 5 stars A New Fairy Series.......2007-07-22

This reshapes the world of fairies and that's wonderful because the story is so interesting and fun. These are fairies living among us secretly as human beings, and the fairies do important things. When arguing with my daughter about chores, she told me, "I am very busy. For all you know I might be a fairy, which means I need time to do my important fairy business." In this first story we are introduced to the fairies and one (Marigold) who is discovering that she is a fairy. The girls set out on a mission to help the brownies get the Feather of Hope back. The gremlins are cute, along with Beth's dachshund who helps with the mission. This is a good children's book that even adults will enjoy as light/quick reading.

5 out of 5 stars Great, even for Non-Fairy Types.......2007-06-16

I wasn't sure what to make of these books in the Fairy Chronicles series. I know that some girls love princesses and fairies and unicorns, but I don't think that my eight-year-old daughter and I are in that camp. We were both hooked in the first chapter, because this is not just a story about a feminine mythical creature. It's an adventure story. It's also a story of self-discovery. Every two to three pages are illustrated with really beautiful pen and ink drawings by Tara Larsen Chang, which makes the book even more captivating. The story could be enjoyed by girls age six or seven on up to ten, at least. The print is big (like an early reader), but the vocabulary is fairly complex (My third grade daughter could easily understand, but there were a few unfamiliar words). It makes for a nice combination that is not too intimidating to read, and yet will challenge a girl while she's reading it (sort of like when Kindergarteners have so much fun that the don't realize that they are learning). This also makes it a great read-aloud, because you can stop and talk about the new words. Each book is about 100 pages, which I have found is a nice length for a book that we are going to read together before bed, because we are able to finish the book within a week and not get too weary of it. It's also just the right length for a slower or more reluctant independent reader to be able to tackle on her own.

Beth is a [...] girl who is going to spend part of the summer with her quirky aunt. What Beth doesn't know is that her aunt has something special in mind for this particular visit. She's going to tell Beth something about herself that she doesn't know: she is also a fairy named Marigold. As a fairy, Beth learns to fly, to use her wand, and even helps ward off the evil activities of some gremlins, while exploring her new found relationships with other young girls who also happen to be fairies.
This first book sets up the storyline, so there is less action and adventure, but we've also read the second book and found it to be more exciting in that respect.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Storyline and Should Be Collectible.......2007-06-13

I say should because this book contains a terrific story with colorful illustrations. But the book is paperback. I can't find a hardback version. There is an "unavailable" earlier paperback edition but no hardback one. As captivating and interesting as this story is and as beautiful as the illustrations are, this should be a collectible book - but I don't know many people who "collect" paperbacks. This should be presented like Barker's Flower Fairies in hardback storybooks and on coffee mugs and calendars. This series is more complex than the Rainbow and Weather Fairies series. The stories are more along the lines of Fairy Realm, also a good series for young girls. This is a challenging book for early chapter readers and a terrific story but I would wish for a collectible hardback book for the long term especially since this will be much handled by many young readers.

5 out of 5 stars Fairies, Magic and Hope.......2007-05-21

It is time to introduce you to the Fairy Team: Marigold, Dragonfly, Thistle and Firefly. Perhaps it is possible that they are the ones that magically fixed the lamp you thought was once broken, or perhaps that dragonfly you saw buzzing around yesterday was actually a fairy in disguise. In this magical fairy-filled world, anything from a young girl's imagination materializes in the magic of The Fairy Chronicles' first book of the series, Marigold and the Feather of Hope, the Journey Begins.

Young Beth Parish is starting her summer off in the most boring way possible - two weeks with her oddly strange aunt. As a nine year old, there is nothing else worse in the world than having to spend a half month with someone that is far from ordinary. However, no sooner than a can of root beer later, Beth learns that not only is her aunt a fairy, but she is too - a Marigold fairy, to be precise! It is at this instant that the young (and old) reader is pulled into the magical fairy world of writer and creator J.H. Sweet.

There are more than just fairies in this magical world. Garden gnomes, brownies and even nasty gremlins could be lurking around any house and garden on the block. Never fear, the fairies rescue the day when they defeat the nasty little gremlins wreaking havoc upon Mr. Forrester, just in time for the brownies to recover the Feather of Hope. This magical team effort is rounded out by the help of Beth's dachshund - the one creature gremlins are afraid of!

The Fairy Chronicles are more than just a magical ride through a mythical world, but also teach valuable life lessons while entertaining the senses. Learning to appreciate nature and the colors of the natural world is a great lesson to be learned in the midst of "Climate Change" and other scary, bewildering thoughts of the future. "Leave only footprints" is an idealistic thought for how all creatures (fairies and non-fairies) should treat the Earth. Also, while awaiting the rescue of the Feather of Hope, we see that Mr. Forrester believes that there are "two important things to consider" in our search for the meaning of life. "How we treat other people, and what we teach to children," are actual lessons demonstrated in Marigold and the Feather of Hope, the Journey Begins.

Another beneficial lesson weaved into this magical book includes knowing the importance of community as we see the how the fairies work together to solve problems with each other to benefit each other. The reader learns alongside Marigold on becoming an educated fairy and how fairies value honesty and virtue. Between the magic and the lessons, this book is a wonderful choice for young, impressionable readers with wild and ambitious imaginations.

In addition to being a very easy read, geared towards children ages seven and up, with colorful and imaginative illustrations by Tara Larsen Chang, it makes an excellent bedtime book to be read a chapter or two at a time. Magically fun adventures are on the horizon for Marigold, her aunt, the Fairy Team and others from the Fairy Circle. You and your child will both enjoy the adventures yet to come to the lovable fairies in J.H. Sweet's magical fairy world!

5 out of 5 stars Charming and Simple.......2007-05-21

I like the charm of this book. I found myself thinking of Heidi and Flopsie, Mopsie, and Peter Rabbit. However, this book is a much different story. What is nice about it is that the girl, Beth, likes things like climbing trees and drawing with colored pencils so it is somewhat of an old-fashioned book. A reminder of simpler times.

I learned a few things I never knew about fairies, trees, brownies, gnomes, and gremlins. There is a charm in the three things gremlins are afraid of which are vacuum cleaners, stainless steel, and dacshunds. I would have never thought of something that cute.

There is something else to this book that I can't quite pinpoint. Beth is at first embarrassed by her aunt's oddities, then she grows up somewhat when she discovers they are both fairies and have to do an important task. I think there is much more to this book than a girl maturing and learning to appreciate and accept the differences of family members and friends. I'll have to read it again to see if I can understand this better. I think there might be something more to the journal that contains the feather.

There are also morals and values present in this book, but the writer is not overly preachy, so the story will appeal to a variety of readers. The girl characters are good role models for other girls because they are strong, committed, and respect others.

What I really like about this book is the simplicity of it so maybe I don't need to overthink other things. It is just a very charming fairytale, one I enjoyed, and one that reminded me of some books I read as a girl.

5 out of 5 stars We Loved It!.......2007-07-22

Even more so than the first book in the series, my daughter and I loved this fairy adventure. We are getting more and more interested in seeing where this is all heading. Dragonfly is a strong character and very opinionated. But she is a very good fairy, committed to her job and to her friends. The fairies travel north to find the Dream Spider and have run-ins with trolls, along with a few surprises. We are definitely reading this twice.

4 out of 5 stars Good For Kids Who Don't Like To Read.......2007-07-05

My daughter is ten and doesn't like to read. She sat down with this book after dinner and I didn't hear a peep from her for two hours. She finished it all in one sitting and has asked me to get her more books from this series. I was intrigued by what might have sparked her interest so I read about half the book after she went to bed, finishing it in the morning. I liked it well enough to want to read more about the fairies. The plot is simple, but interesting. The fairies discover a problem, have a meeting, then set out to fix the problem. They have a little fun on the way and encounter a few surprises. The details added to the storyline are part of what make it so engaging. We learned a few things about gnomes and recycling in addition to learning about fairies. Each of the fairies has a gift, and these gifts come in handy during their trip. Firefly uses her light--Marigold her gift of repelling insects--and Dragonfly her speed and soccer skills. The fact that a normal gift such as coordination from soccer practice played a part in this magical adventure is very nice because it lets kids of all kinds engage in the action of the story and believe they could do something like this too to help fix problems and make a difference in the world. I don't like to give any books five stars because we are not talking about Hemmingway here, but I think this is right up there with the best of today's children's fantasy books. Any book that can make my daughter want to read deserves a pretty good rating, so I would put this at four to four-and-a-half stars.

Jennifer (Dragonfly) and her friends join the Sandman to visit the spider who spins the Web of Dreams. The web has been destroyed and so people all over the world are having too many nightmares. Along with action, this book has a little bit of mystery as well.

5 out of 5 stars Another "Fairy Team" Job Well Done.......2007-05-21

J.H. Sweet brings back the Fairy Team in another magical story telling of The Fairy Chronicles. In book two of the series, Dragonfly and the Web of Dreams, the reader revisits this magical world of fairies, gremlins, brownies, mystical spiders and even a cameo from the Sandman! But there is much more than magic happening in Dragonfly and the Web of Dreams.

One of the best points to make about The Fairy Chronicles is the way J.H. Sweet weaves lessons of environmental responsibility into the stories, without it seeming out of place. Jennifer Sommerset, also known as Dragonfly in her fairy form, is avid on the notion of recycling and reusing. From making sure her family has the proper recycling bins, to encouraging her neighbors to do their part, Jennifer goes above and beyond the environmentally conscious duties of all fairies. Jennifer is also known for her pamphlets, created wholly on her part, for ideas on how to reuse things like coffee cans and butter tubs. These are everyday examples of how easy it is to make the world a better place to live in, and young impressionable readers will be educated and inspired by these environmentally friendly messages.

Dragonfly and the Web of Dreams also delivers the important message of team work, as the Fairy Team and other characters introduced in the first book of the series work together to benefit all of mankind. Sometimes team work also means working with someone you don't know very well or have a misconception about, and Dragonfly and the Web of Dreams demonstrates to young readers how you really can't judge a book by its cover. The Dream Spider is a very large, furry creature that has a deep booming voice and is very intimidating by appearance. However, in the end, we see how even someone who seems to be dark or scary can actually do something helpful or produce something as mystically beautiful as the Web of Dreams.

J.H. Sweet has perfectly captured the right balance of magic and mystery with real life lessons of team work, environmental responsibility and open-mindedness. These are perfect lessons for the targeted audience, and Dragonfly and the Web of Dreams makes a great family reading session! The magical fairy world of The Fairy Chronicles takes everyone, from the young and the young at heart, into a place that is exciting to visit, over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Really Good (My Niece Loves It).......2007-05-14

I had to think about this review before writing it. A fairy tale about fairies? Sounds kind of cliché and old fashioned, but it actually works. What makes this story good are the original characters and the sequence of events. I really didn't know what was going to happen, except I anticipated it would have a happy ending like most fairy tales. I read this to my 7 yr old niece and she begged me to read it again. I told her to read it to herself and she is working on it. Brianna loves the trolls and the fact that trolls love marshmallows. She also wanted to know more about the fairy fire shield because her parents have taken her camping. She also told me she doesn't think spiders are so scary after reading about the Dream Spider. I told her if she ever saw a spider as big as a dinner plate, she better be scared. But it is interesting that this book does not portray a large spider as scary. Instead, he is a magical insect with a very good purpose in life, to spin a web to catch our nightmares. Nice job on this book. I wish much success to the author. I am getting another copy of this for my younger niece who lives in a different state.

Book Description

Life is very tough in the Wyoming Territory in 1885 -- and not just because of the brutal environment. Michael Purdy is an outcast in the small town of Rock Springs. At times bullied and bloodied and at other times ignored, Michael feels that he might as well be a ghost in this town of rough miners.

But life is even tougher for Joseph Young -- a Chinese American boy Michael's age. Despised by the American miners, the Chinese work for slave wages and in increasingly dangerous conditions. Born in America but never feeling he belongs, Joseph burns with the desire to be a "real American boy" -- a dream his father and the other Chinese laborers don't understand. To them, life in America is a constant struggle against poverty, deprivation, and hate. When the town's growing resentment toward the Chinese explodes in an event of horrifying cruelty, Michael and Joseph must trust each other with their lives.

Based on the actual events of one of the worst race riots in American history, The Traitor is a powerful, haunting, and ultimately hopeful story about a unique friendship strong enough to bring two worlds together.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars boys of the Wild West.......2004-08-30

Rebeccasreads highly recommends THE TRAITOR: Golden Mountain Chronicles 1885 Wyoming Territory, as not only a grand boys' adventure, it's a roller-coaster historical ride into the dark side of fighting for survival & transcending racial hatred, as well soaring into the bright side of friendship, purpose & hope.

As with all Laurence Yep's chronicles of the Chinese American experience, THE TRAITOR is a riveting read! Could not put it down! Quite serious, all the more so because the events described actually happened. It makes you think "What would I have done?"

5 out of 5 stars The Best Work of Yep's Up to Date.......2004-01-30

As a graduate student working on Yep's novels, I found The Traitor the most interesting and fascinating to read among the rest of his Golden Mountain Chronicles. Not only is The Traitor full of complexity and ingenuity, but also gives us the detailed history of the Chinese immigrants in the 1880s, including the severest Chinese massacre incident and the Exclusion Act. The story starts with a boy named Joseph, son of Otter in Dragon's Gate, who shares his living experiences with a local American boy Michael. As the "traitors" from both their ethnic groups, Joseph and Michael have to use their wisdom in order to survive in the Rock Springs Massacre.

For those who would like to know more about the Chinese immigrant history, I strongly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Exellent portrayal of the Rock Springs Chinese massacre.......2003-03-19

This book, The Traitor, is a fantastic book. I read it in two days and could not put it down. It's, in a nutshell, about a Chinese-American boy named Joseph Young who wants to be fully American.Joe's a miner who misses San Francisco, where he used to live before the immigration laws threw him and his father out. In the adjoining town of Rock Springs is a boy named Michael Purdy. Mike is shunned due to his not having a father. Michael and Joseph find sanctuary in Star Rock, their weekly meeting place. Meanwhile, Mike's town is a Chinese hating society, so they band together one day to kill all the Chinese out of spite. The book is based on actual events, and if you're like me, anything with to do with Chinese culture or historical fiction draws you in. Hope you like it!

      Book Description

Ben Arnold had hoped that exposing Mr. Dodds's vile Pet Emporium --

      a

business that stole magical creatures from Eidolon to sell to England's

rich and curious -- would prevent the Secret Country from fading away into

ruin. However, it soon becomes clear that the evil, dog-headed Dodman's

reign of terror has only just begun.

Ben's mother, Queen Isadora, returns to her homeland to lead its creatures

against the Dodman. Unwilling to be left behind, Ben's sister, Ellie,

crosses into the Secret Country and walks straight into a trap. Ben and his

father follow close behind, and soon the entire Arnold family is scattered

across Eidolon's magical and dangerous terrain. The Arnold children are

destined to save the Secret Country, but first they must save each other.
