Book Description

This is the only English translation of this important book by the world's most distinguished Bach scholar. This work is widely regarded as the most authoritative and comprehensive treatment of the Bach cantatas. It begins with a historical survey of the seventeenth-century background to the cantatas, and performance practice issues. The core of the book is a work-by-work study in which each cantata in turn is represented by its libretto, a synopsis of its movements, and a detailed analytical commentary. This format makes it extremely useful as a reference work for anyone listening to, performing in, or studying any of the Bach cantatas. All the cantata librettos are given in German-English parallel text. For the English edition the text has been carefully revised to bring it up to date, taking account of recent Bach scholarship.

This is a dense and rewarding book for classical music fans as well as those interested in the German language. Worth the price.

Alfred Durr's The Cantatas of J.S. Bach is the "bible" for any conductor, artistic director, church musician or music performer and listener that is interested in performing or understanding Bach's canon. Hi give it my highest recomendation.

5 out of 5 stars Costly but useful.......2006-05-09

This is a very expensive, but wonderfully useful book. It gives the libretto to every single cantata plus information on the liturgical occasion for the cantata and a good, albeit brief discussion of the meaning of the piecel I quailed when I first bought it, because it is expensive. But it is my vade mecum. I use it constantly.

5 out of 5 stars Like his life, it ended too soon........2007-09-13

I grew up listening to the Music of Keith Green. My parents were big fans, and to them, Keith was more then just a singer.
I slowly stopped listening to his music when I got older, and thought that the new music I listened to had a better sound and a more meaningful message, simply because it was newer music. But then I started listening to Keith Green again, and saw that his music is timeless, and can still change lives.

I picked up this book, and started reading it right away. The tone read very much like a novel, with pictures every now and then to show you how Keith and those around him had changed over time. At first, I wasn't sure how I felt about there being pictures so much, but then I saw the effect they had on me.

I got to know Keith as if he were a friend of mine. I got to see his struggles, his fears, his likes, his dislikes; I got to shake hands with Keith. His story of how he came to know Jesus is one that can touch anyone.

Ultimately, when the book started to end, I knew how he was going to die. I knew it was coming. I even looked ahead to see what chapter it happens in. Even though I knew it was coming, I still started to cry.
I spent my time reading this book, and getting to know Keith, his children, and his friends, that I he died all over again. I missed him again.

Still, with that said, I think my favorite part in the book is the story of how they had a cow die, and they couldn't get a butcher out to the farm (because the butcher has to kill the animal he'll be butchering), so they did it themselves.

With all that said, this is an amazing story that every Christian should read. Even if you weren't a fan of his music, it is still an amazing story.

5 out of 5 stars The Best!.......2007-08-23

Melody green did an amazing job at letting us in on her life with Keith Green. She is very open and honest and makes it easy to follow. It is very easy to relate to for practically anyone. Some parts brought tears to my eyes and it brings you to self reflect where you are at spiritually. I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Sold out for God.......2007-06-08

Keith Green's book "No Compromise" was an in depth look at this Christian mans life. He lived his life solely for God, and never looked back. He was constantly examining himself to see if he measured up to how a Christian life should be led. He was an inspiration to me of how to live for Jesus!

5 out of 5 stars No Compromise.......2007-01-17

This book is a great book describing a man who lived a life loving the Lord and encountering some of the issues we individually face. This just goes to show that we all can stand out and trust the Lord. Keith was a man who chose to live a life with No Compromise with his relationship with the Lord.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful Biography About The Late, Influential Music Minister.......2006-12-26

This book looked into the life of Keith Green, especially the final seven years of his life, from his conversion to Christianity to his untimely death. It was written by his widow, Melody, who came to Christ at the same time.

Keith Green was more than just another Christian singer/songwriter. He was sold out to the Gospel, and it showed in his music, his lifestyle, and his writings. I am not sure I agree with some of what he did or some of his doctrinal leadings, but I admire his zeal.

One note of comment: In 1977, you would find the debut albums of two artists next to each other: Amy Grant and Keith Green. In 1982, Grant became the first Christian artist to earn a gold album. The same year, Green became the first to earn a gold crown. We need more Keith Greens today: in Christianity in general and in Christian music specifically.

    Book Description

In this unique and readable study, Jon Finson views the mores and values of nineteenth-century Americans as they appear in their popular songs. The author sets forth lyricists' and composers' notions of courtship, technology, death, African Americans, Native Americans, and European ethnicity
by grouping songs topically. He goes on to explore the interaction between musical style and lyrics within each topic. The lyrics and changing musical styles present a vivid portrait of nineteenth-century America. The composers discussed in the book range from Henry Russell ("Woodman, Spare That
Tree"), Stephen Foster ("Oh! Susanna"), and Dan Emmett ("I Wish I Was in Dixie's Land"), to George M. Cohan and Maude Nugent ("Sweet Rosie O'Grady"), and Gussie Lord Davis ("In the Baggage Coach Ahead"). Readers will recognize songs like "Pop Goes the Weasel," "The Yellow Rose of Texas," "The
Fountain in the Park," "After the Ball," "A Bicycle Built for Two," and many others which gain significance by being placed in the larger context of American history.

    Book Description

For the longest time, during some rough boyhood years in Alabama and the grind of performing on the road, the odds against me were discouraging. But there was always a voice inside telling me it was going to get better.

Mom and Dad certainly started out with good intentions, but early on, as their marriage went south and I went in whatever direction was necessary to avoid the fallout, I realized my life was going to be up to me.

Thinking back, my first step toward singing for a living was stealing an Otis Redding album when I was nine. What I heard on that platter was life-changing, and pretty soon I was learning to play the harmonica, which, I can assure you, didn’t attract many female fans—in fact, any fans at all.

I eventually decided that not being taken seriously can be a good thing. It stokes the fires. Maybe the reason I like soul music so much is that it inspires with its pain. The best artists, like Ray Charles, reach out and say, “You’re not alone, brother.”

In all my years on the road—trying to make it in Nashville and those Southern honky-tonks known as the “Chitlin Circuit”—I never thought it would take an act of God to push my destiny into the right groove. But as you’ll hear, it was nearly getting washed away by Hurricane Katrina that led to my Idol tryout. And what happened next was a little bit like when Alice dropped down that rabbit hole—just substitute Simon Cowell for the Mad Hatter.

In Heart Full of Soul, I share some life stories that will hopefully inspire you—give you a sense of my philosophy and how it drove me. For example, I talk about my good friend who died in a tragic accident and the prediction he made that tugged at my thoughts throughout Idol’s qualifying rounds. I also discuss what it was like when I realized Eminem has it right: when you only have one shot, you’d better lose yourself in the music.

A lot of great fans lined up behind me the night of the Idol finale. This book is about the strange path that led me to that pop-culture moment, and the sharp directional changes that occurred after that phenomenal night, including touring America, producing an album, and experiencing that two-sided gig known as American celebrity.

I hope that some of the lessons I’ve learned along the way will help you, especially if the shot you’ve been yearning for is just around the corner.

Taylor Hicks book was so heartwarming to me. He has true moxie because he made it on his own without much support in his childhood. I loved him on American Idol and I am happy to know him better through his book.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful bio of Taylor .......2007-09-23

This book was well written with many humorus lines, giving a real insight to who Taylor Hicks really is and what he has endured to follow his dream. We, who are avid fans, are glad that he never gave up. He is truly unique and inspiring, both musically and personally. Oh, and lest I forget, he is most definitely easy on the eyes and seeing him live in person is an unforgetable experience.

5 out of 5 stars Taylor Hicks- My American Idol........2007-09-07

I was real excited to read this book as it had been a year since I had read any book due to loss of vision. Now that I have my "Reader" I chose this book. It was an easy read and moved right along. I really enjoyed hearing about his life and all the things that went on during his ride to be the American Idol. There was some good photos in it also.

5 out of 5 stars Heart Full of Soul and Taylor has it!!.......2007-09-03

I loved Taylor's book in both the hardback and audio versions. Hearing Taylor's voice telling his own story is amazing. Taylor's life journey to this point is incredible. He has certainly "paid his dues" and is very deserving of all of the good things that are coming his way since he was discovered! Anyone reading this book would be inspired to never give up because you never know what the future holds. I for one have been uplifted by his message.

1 out of 5 stars Like the rest of Taylor's career: soon to be in a bargain bin.......2007-09-01

It's obvious that the majority of reviews written for this skimpy and hollow book are written by Taylor's fans. That's fine. People who are really into their AI faves usually have no sense of blind fanboyism and will highly rate anything that their idol puts out. The fact of the matter, however, is that Hicks' career has been a flop, both in terms of comparing it to other AI contestants (save for Justin Guarini's and Corey Clark's) and on its very own. The guy couldn't eke out a career before Idol, and now in the aftermath of winning it, it looks like he's still not making any headway.

This book attempts to wring out any last popularity the guy may have. The problem is, only the fans are going to buy it and declare it as wonderful, while everyone else will simply pass it by, knowing full well that the story inside will well be forgotten a few months from now. Hicks may well have been AI's biggest anomaly as far as its grand prize winners went, but it looks like it was all for naught. So don't be surprised when you start seeing this book being dumped by the truckloads into bargain book warehouse stores and the like. While Hicks may have had honest and noble intentions behind his AI career, the fact is the young and ever-fickle audience the show is geared towards just aren't interested in the long haul.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of info.......2007-10-03

I had long known about Ms. Nixon's film work, dubbing for Deborah Kerr, Natalie Wood and Audrey Hepburn, but this memoir filled in a lot of gaps. I really enjoyed it.

3 out of 5 stars Fun for film buffs.......2007-01-13

If you have ever wondered who sang Kerr's songs in KING & I or Wood's in WEST SIDE STORY, then this is the book for you. Marnie Nixon was the dubbed voice of many non-singing stars'in some of their best roles. Here she tells her story and while at times it drags a bit, I found it very interesting and entertaining. The chapters about her work in film are espcially engaging.

5 out of 5 stars marni Nixon bio.......2006-11-10

Enjoyed this book so much.It was fun to read about all the colleagues she had worked with during her career. A very pleasant read.

5 out of 5 stars Hollywood's most famous vocal "Ghost" appears in the shimmering flesh!.......2006-10-19

Marni Nixon's was one of those famous people who fascinated me from the moment I heard her story of being the vocal "ghost" in three of Hollywood's most remarkable musicals. Her's is a story I was waiting to hear, and with this great book, it was worth the wait.

For anyone interested in musicals, Hollywood or performing, Ms. Nixon's wonderful book will be a boon. From her personal stories about Hollywood to her journey from singer to remarkable actress, the book is a wonderful read.

Her story would make one of the most fascinating movie musicals ever. Part "Singing in the Rain" and part Hollywood Grimm's fairy tale, I want to see this story made into a movie musical. Anyone out there listening?

Bravo to Ms. Nixon! Thank you for sharing your amazing story. I was completely enthralled as well as inspired.

5 out of 5 stars My Fair and Wonderful Lady.......2006-10-12

"I Could Have Sung All Night" by Marni Nixon is a wonderful, enjoyable autobiography of her life. Marni Nixon has dubbed singers Audrey Hepburn (My Fair Lady), Deborah Kerr (The King and I), and to my surprise Natalie Wood (West Side Story). Growing up with these movie musicals I knew about Marni Nixon's dubbing in "My Fair Lady", but when reading the chapter on "West Side Story" regarding the dubbing for Natalie Wood, I was surprised. When watching West Side Story, I really thought it was Natalie Wood doing her own singing!
Marni Nixon tells wonderful stories about her travels in Israel with Liberace, her stint with Victor Borge, and many other anecdotes.
The book is a fun and entertaining read, and I could not put it down. Thank you Marni Nixon!

This book and others of the series bring together Sondheim's greatest works. It includes hard to find music like "I Remember" (from Evening Primrose) which makes this book a wonderful addition to any singer's collection. I recommend it to anyone and everyone!

As a fanatical Sondheim lover and singer, this book was awonderful addition to my collection. Among some of his best earlytitles, this book includes songs like "I Remember", "Losing My Mind", and "Another Hundred People". These are wonderfully written pieces which deserve many books like this one. They are a joy to listen to and even more to play, and I hope everyone will enjoy this book as much as I do.

For many Guided By Voices fans, Bee Thousand is the holy grail - the album on which the band's singular talents gel into something approaching rock'n'roll perfection. In this book, Marc Woodworth - with help from Robert Pollard, Tobin Sprout, and several other band members - examines and celebrates what makes this record so special, so unlikely, and so enduring.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great book for GBV fans.......2007-03-21

A very informative book that makes you think about such great songs in a brand new way. The fact that Robert Pollard has not one, but two long essays in the book (one is by Bart J Hooper LLD or something similar, very obviously bob himself) makes this alone worth the price of entry. Add that to the great commentary by Tobin Sprout and a very competent author and you have a perfect celebration of the glory that is Bee Thousand and GBV.

    3 out of 5 stars the stomp............2007-01-12

I guess, in short I would just say the best parts of this book are: The bits of interviews, say from Thrasher, Fennell, Tobin sprout, Demos...and of course thee best part of the book (in my opinion) is a play by play description of each song and kind of what went into creating this LP, via Bobby! Which really, just puts the purpose of the book into prespective. You know?,...you get the stories from the people involved, or anyone who was around them while it was going on & you have it, simple! There is also a great picture of the Memory Man pedal they used for Hot Freaks and the 4-track they recorded with which are just some neat extras! But I give this book a 3* because there's allot of just, pretentious clammer, I'll say, from the other bits in the book.. kinda like - "How many words can I toss together to make me sound extremely deep and poetic about this astonishing band & novel of epic proportions & peice of art for the ages...blah blah blah.....!"
You know,...I just don't have allot of time for all the extra junk, I guess I will say. The people outside the realm, wanting to get their two cents in or whatever, with run on sentences that have nothing to with anything- It's like being in a bar with a hundred micro beers or whatever and trying to gush about all the different flavors & how great it all is..OR?... just ordering a Budweiser. Sorry for the drinking refrerence...it's a bit cliche i know. I'm sorry for that one. But look, you ask Bob or any of the others some questions...record it on a cassette...re-write it for this book......and your there! Which Marc did...
    kinda?
And I must say, I'm not one really for saying negative words about anyones work....I try and stick with the positive points! I think people should do more of that instead of putting people down...ecspecially when people get on these things, like reviews or Blogs or any other computer crumb dummies. So I want to apoligize if it sounds mean. But anyways....
So yeah, I think this book needed to be done. It's worth every penny just for Bobs section alone! If you are a fan...or just want to know a little bit about GBV during this period & or this LP...spend the $9 and enjoy, right?!
The 33 1/3 series is pretty nice. A small book of some info & opinions about some of the really great Albums over time. I have a list still of some others I would like to read from this series.
So I am glad this was done.
    I give this a Gold *! (I know, more lame reference's..sorry)

5 out of 5 stars are you amplified to read?.......2006-11-22

I've read several of these 33 1/3 books, and this one is one of my favorites. Woodworth has stitched together lots of different bits and pieces for the book--listener testimonials, interviews with band members and people in Pollard's group of friends, short analyses of songs, etc. that bump up against each other and put each other in context by putting them in contrast. And much like the songs on Bee THousand, as you read/listen, you begin to realize that all the little disparate components are just parts of a bigger coherent machine. Woodworth has Pollard's aesthetic down, and his is an unique and inspiring approach to writing about music. It got me to bust out the 4 track again anyway...

    Book Description

Over the past three decades, Tom Waits has achieved the kind of top-shelf cult status most artists only dream about. In his varied career, he has acted alongside Jack Nicholson, Meryl Streep, and Lily Tomlin; his songs have been covered by artists as diverse as Bruce Springsteen, Sarah McLachlan, the Eagles, and the Ramones; he’s won two Grammys, a Golden Globe, and been nominated for an Oscar; he’s coined unforgettable phrases like “better a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy” and “champagne for my real friends, real pain for my sham friends”; and he’s made anyone who’s ever listened to his music just that much cooler.

Here is Tom Waits in all his mischievous splendor. From a New Yorker “Talk of the Town” in 1976 to an interview by Terry Gilliam in 1999; from album reviews by Luc Sante and David Fricke to conversations with Elvis Costello and Roberto Benigni; from a recent profile in GQ to “20 Questions” in Playboy and reviews of Waits’s acclaimed new album, Real Gone, this is the must-have book for every fan of the artist Beck has described as a “luminary,” and for music fans everywhere.

4 out of 5 stars Keeping Track of Articles........2007-08-15

If you're a fan of an artist, it's difficult, time-consuming and expensive to keep track of all the interviews and articles written about your favourite artist. Fans of Tom Waits can rest assured - the most interesting articles and interviews are collected in this book, in chronological order, with a foreword by Frank Black of the Pixies.
Reading all these interviews and articles consecutively, you get a taste of the elusive Tom Waits - sometimes truthful, often wickedly confabulating and evading queries, but always amusing.
A must for Tom Waits' fans.

4 out of 5 stars a must for tom waits fans........2007-02-10

this is a thoroughly enjoyable book consisting of all things tom waits: interviews, reviews, articles, and such. mr waits comments on his approach to songwriting were the most consistently interesting aspect of the book for me and should be of great interest (for freshness of/and or off-kilter approach to song building) to all aspiring songsters. lacking a biography or autobiography, the world, for now, will have to make do with this well done book for an insight into this amazing artist.

5 out of 5 stars Step Right Up and have a chat with the man himself........2007-01-16

Excellent book. This book is a collection of interviews, show reviews and magazine and newspaper articles spanning Waits's career. Most of the interviews are from the perspective of the average reporter who has no way of getting at the center of the Waits Tutsie Roll Pop ("How many licks does it take to get to the center?") and that provides an interesting perspective in that the reader gets to see how Waits chooses to portray himself. However, some of the interviews are done by close friends, like Elvis Costello and Jim Jarmusch ("Down by Law" and "Night on Earth"), and the reader gets a glimpse of maybe who the true Waits is. It's a great contrast even if it wasn't intended to be the focus of the collection.
Another captivating aspect of the book is that the reader is provided details about all the unique methods Waits uses to make his music. For example, on "The Earth Died Screaming", sound effects are made by having people bang sticks and 2x4s on the pavement of the studio parking lot.
A must have for any Waits fan!
And it's nearly 400 pages long!!

5 out of 5 stars Multiple perspectives on Waits.......2006-06-03

In the absence of an autobiography, this collection of 38 interviews and profiles is essential for the Tom Waits fan. It opens with a foreword by Frank Black and an introduction by Mac Montandon.

Part One: Early Years, contains the following amongst many others: The 1974 press release for Heart Of Saturday Night by Waits himself; A short interview with Clark Peterson of Creem magazine from 1978 titled The Slime Who Came In From The Cold; from 1976, there is an article from Sweet & Sour, a long Zig Zag interview and a New Yorker article.

The 1977 Rolling Stone piece by David McGee is very informative and from 1979 there is a short Washington Post article. This section also contains a poem by Charles Bukowski with a short introduction noting that it captures the entire Waitsian world.

In Part Two: The Middle Years, I found the following to be the most compelling: Peter Sabbag's in-depth 1987 article from the Los Angeles Times Magazine, a long formal question and answer interview by Glen O'Brien in a 1985 Spin magazine, 20 Questions from a 1988 Playboy and another question and answer interview from 1989 with Elvis Costello in Option.

Part Three: These Days, offers inter alia the following informative pieces: A 1999 Billboard review of Mule Variations and a short 1999 live review by Jon Pareles from the New York Times. From the same year there is a short review by Luc Sante in The Village Voice and an engaging conversational piece by David Fricke in Rolling Stone. There is also a short question and answer session from a 2004 Vanity Fair.

This section concludes with Nirvana, a 1992 poem by Charles Bukowski. It was included because in an interview with Soma magazine in 2002, Waits referred to this as his favorite poem. The book concludes with a Discography and a Timeline from Waits' birth on 7th December 1949 to the release of his 2004 album Real Gone. The book documents his entire career and is perhaps better than any biography as it contain so many perspectives from so many different writers.

4 out of 5 stars If Tom's Work Intrigues You...........2006-03-16

Tom Waits is enigmatic and flies under the commercial music radar. His work is interesting and deals with a part of life few people really care to discover. It's cool to read anything about Tom and try to discover what makes him tick. He's a human-interest story. The thing I think is weird about the book is that it seems most of the authors adopt a writing style imitative of Wait's work. It makes the authors seem pretentious and unauthentically(word?) bohemian. It is interesting reading because of the subject matter.

It's notoriously difficult to describe music (and the act of music-making) with words, but few people spend as much time and thought on how to do it as professional singers; there's a lot to be learned from them. In this sequel to Legendary Voices, Nigel Douglas continues his examination of the lives and work of great singers of years past, in a book that will be helpful both to fans of the art form and to those who hope to be the great singers of years to come.

      Book Description
