Book Description

"Soulful Sex: Erotic Tales of Fantasy and Romance Volumes I & II" combines the stories from Diana Laurence's bestselling and award winning ebooks in one paperback collection. Diana's unique brand of "erotica with soul" presents sensuality in a tasteful and literary way. Her themes and styles traverse the map of romance: from the lighthearted fantasy world of the "Vernal Night" Trilogy, to sexuality's dark side in the vampire tale "Pints." Diana takes original looks at classic heroes: the magician, the celebrity athlete, the warrior-priest. The twelve stories in this combined collection offer something for everyone: contemporary tales from the office and the Appalachians, a science fiction story, and even a fairy tale.

This is a great idea for a book. Short stories loosely based on fables but the title is somewhat deceiving. The sex scenes are not drawn out and detailed enough. Not bad but could have been even better.

88 Points Rating from Mrs. Giggles...

While I have my doubts about the name of Diana Laurence's concept, Soulful Sex, which seems a little too corny for me, I love what the author is trying to do: she wants to write romantic erotic stories. This means no Catholic guilt, no tortured men exorcising their demons by having Hot Angry Sex, no martyr heroines having sex to save the world or members of their family, just people falling in love and having wonderful sex in the process. There are paranormal elements in some of the short stories in here, but there are not one mention of soulmates or any other euphemism for "Tarzan! Must! Have! Sex! Come! Jane! COME! NOW!" concepts common in romantic erotica.

This collection of short stories kick off with "Pints," a short but very effective story about a woman falling in love with a vampire. This one manages to capture a rather credible and even moving romance, and I like especially the novelty of a vampire hero that doesn't spend a long time moping about not being worthy of love. This is a common theme repeated later in other paranormal-tinged short stories like "Fantastic Toys," where a woman falls in love with the man next door who turns out to be more otherworldly in nature than she can ever suspect. Our paranormal heroes don't want to be human, they don't mope in the dark constantly, and they accept being what they are without resorting to Anne Rice-type melodramatics.

Then there is a contemporary short story with a touch of paranormal, like "Real Magic" which makes me feel like once more a silly woman that had a crush on David Copperfield before he turned too weird even for me especially during and after the Claudia Schiffer years. The more down-to-earth contemporary short stories are the outdoor romantic adventure that is "Between Earth And Sky," the office spicy story "Office Mating," and my favorite story in this collection, "Je t'aime, Etienne," a story of a woman who has to travel and watch a hockey game featuring the popular French-Canadian hockey star that she had, more than decade ago, deflowered and even loved. Lucky her, Etienne has never forgotten the slightly older woman that was his first lover and he is eager, earnest even, to have them taking up from where they left to hopefully a happily ever after.

The remaining stories are either fantasy medievals that sometimes have a touch of paranormal elements to them ("Abigail's Archer," "The Dark Prince," and "As Commonplace As Rain") and outright fantasy stories (the three stories, "The Trio," "The Infatuation," and "One Hundred Women," that make up the author's Vernal Night trilogy).

All the stories are actually entertaining in their own right, with no real duds among them, and some are even tug at my heartstrings like "Je t'aime, Etienne" and "Fantastic Toys." I like "Pints" especially how the story ends - it's quite open-ended but not too open-ended because it's clear that our heroine and her vampiric beau are going to try to beat the odds to be together. What stands out in these stories is how Ms Laurence emphasizes the process of falling in love between her characters. The love scenes here aren't that kinky. I'd rate the love scenes around the vicinity of a R rating rather than a NC-17 rating. Nonetheless, these love scenes can be very sexy because they happen to two characters that are often than not clearly meant to be together.

Since these are short stories, the characters involved most of the time fall in love over a short period of time. However Ms. Laurence often depicts the passion and the romance between the two characters in a melodramatic magnitude, with urgency and passion and rapid heartbeats and all, that she manages to convince me that it's love at first sight as much as it is lust as first sight for her characters. Even if it's unrealistic to assume that the main characters are in love after meeting in such a short while, Ms. Laurence often attempts to at least portray her characters as falling in love by the time the story ends. Am I making sense here? An excellent example of this is "Fantastic Toys": while one can argue that nobody can possibly fall in love in such a short time, the heroine and the hero are clearly at least starting to be in love by the time the story ends, hence their devotion to each other is as moving as their love story is fun to read.

I really like "Soulful Sex: Erotic Tales Of Fantasy And Romance Volumes I & II" and my only complaint about it is that I wish some of the short stories I really like are longer. Readers looking for romantic sensual stories without overused gimmicks like destiny-ordained werewolf/vampire soulmates, mental angsts, and duty sex may want to give this book a try. If the price of $14.99 is a little too steep for the trade paperback format of this book, you can always check out each individual volume in ebook format from the publisher at $4.50 each. Anyway, it's always nice to see an author writing sensual love stories that emphasize heart and passion over familiar melodramatic paranormal erotic romance conventions - like secret agents, mate-obsessed werecreatures, and whiny telepathic soulmate-obsessed vampires where it's mostly plot and sex without much credible passion and romance developing between the main characters - especially when she's doing a good job at it.

5 out of 5 stars Synopsis and Reviews of Soulful Sex Volumes I & II.......2006-03-09

"Soulful Sex Volumes I & II" is a collection of twelve stories in Diana Laurence's unique style of "erotica with soul": erotic romance that is sensual as well as literary and tasteful. Twelve delightful couples explore timeless, archetypal themes of desire, intimacy, submission, conquest, and the union of souls through erotic experience.

In "Pints," it is the vampire's victim who tempts him to give in to his dark side. Who will be the victor in an erotic battle of life and death? In "Between Earth and Sky," a young woman lost in the Appalachians escapes death only to wrestle with her feelings for her rescuer. In "Abigail's Archer," lovers meet and woo in a medieval wood touched by strange magic. In "Office Mating," two co-workers with a great rapport find it leads them to do the unthinkable. In "Real Magic," a magician with unique talents reveals his secrets to a special woman. In "The Dark Prince," evil seeks to conquer good in order to save a princess from a terrible curse.

In the "Vernal Night" trilogy of tales, an ancient culture's annual mating tradition offers opportunities for romantic adventure for three disarming heroes: a merchant, an artist, and a minstrel. In "Je t'aime, Etienne," a woman who fell for a young French Canadian hockey player years ago is reunited with him for a night of intense romance can she possibly have a future with this man she has loved from afar for years, even though he is now a star in the NHL? In "As Commonplace as Rain," a member of a spiritual order segregated from any contact with males finds the only thing that can keep her from madness may be the ministrations of a man--and she has never seen one before. And in "Fantastic Toys" a young woman becomes smitten with her eccentric and mysterious neighbor, only to find out a secret about him so bizarre it turns her whole world upside down.

4 Stars from Romantic Times BOOKclub - "More emotionally sexy than erotic, this well-crafted collection offers a smorgasbord for every taste. Laurence has mastered the art of short storytelling. The heroine and hero in each story connect soulfully and develop meaningful relationships that strengthen their intimacy. Readers won't be disappointed with these soul-soothing love stories." "Five angels! In writing 'Soulful Sex,' the author tried to illustrate how sex moves people spiritually, as well as physically and emotionally. She achieved that goal without a doubt! While the sex is described in detail, there is absolutely nothing obscene or offensive in any of these short stories. Ms. Laurence writes beautiful love scenes that are as uplifting and tender as they are arousing. Several passages literally took my breath away. It's wonderful to find a writer who realizes that sex and spirituality are not mutually exclusive. Combining the two can be incredible." - Fallen Angel Reviews "Soulful Sex Volume II is bound to entice and tempt readers into perusing it from start to finish. All of these stories were seductive and sensual in their own way. Ms. Laurence has, in my opinion, written a superb book that includes different scenarios that all have one thing in common, they seduce and entice, which is something that will please even the most discerning reader." - eCataRomance

Book Description

The writings presented in this volume shed tremendous light, both on the character of T. E. Lawrence and the current situation in the Middle East. Despite being written more than seventy years ago, the thoughts of Lawrence of Arabia remain remarkably pertinent. This collection includes Lawrence's wartime reports from the desert, along with later writings in which Lawrence attempts to cope with the consequences of war in the circumstances of peace. Many of the pieces have previously only been issued in limited editions. T. E. Lawrence in War and Peace is an invaluable companion volume to Seven Pillars of Wisdom, which offers a self-portrait of its author long before he became an international celebrity. It gives us the man before the myth, writing fluently, vividly and with a total command of his subject. This edition has been compiled by the acclaimed writer Malcolm Brown, who is the co-author of A Touch of Genius: The Life of T. E. Lawrence and edited The Letters of T. E. Lawrence. The publication coincides with the 70th anniversary of Lawrence's death in May 1935 and an exhibition at the Imperial War Museum, which Brown curates.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars TE Lawrence Military Writings.......2006-11-10

This book by Malcolm Brown is thoroughly researched and contains the most important of Lawrence's writings, aside from Seven Pillars. As Malcolm Brown is a well-known expert on TE Lawrence and on World War I, no other books on Lawrence's writings are as well selected for historical importance or for their revelation of Lawrence's military and literary genius. M. Brown himself has a special genius for understanding and communicating to us the importance of history in the most exciting writing style.

    Book Description

This collection of Nobel Prize winner Samuel Beckett's dramatic pieces includes a short stage play, two radio plays, and two pantomimes. The stage play, Krapp's Last Tape, evolves a shattering drama out of a monologue of a man who, at age sixty-nine, plays back the autobiographical tape he recorded on his thirty-ninth birthday.

The two radio plays were commissioned by the BBC; All That Fall "plumbs the same pessimistic depths [as Waiting for Godot] in what seems a no less despairing search for human dignity" (London Times), and Embers is equally unforgettable theater, born of the ramblings of an old man and his wife.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Life as a verb.......2006-07-05

Beckett's "Krapp's Last Tape" doesn't seem to get the respect it deserves from drama critics because it is always set up against his other works. It lacks the tremendous absurdity of "Waiting for Godot" or "Endgame" but it has its fair share. In some respects "Krapp's LastTape" has much more of a human face than the others: we can understand Krapp much more than Gogo or Didi. And this serves to make him someone with whom we can more easily identify and, therefore, makes him more tragic.

The essential question that this play raises is "Who is Krapp?" Is it the old man we can see on stage? Is it his voice from decades earlier? Or was he the Krapp on the one tape he returns to again and again? Was that Krapp real and then killed and consummed by the bitter man shoving bananas down his throat? Consequently, we discover he is all and none of these. A life is not a static thing; it constantly changes. And, like Krapp, we will either embrace or resent what we do with our lives. This is a terrific play, and, in my humble (and I mean humble) opinion, Samuel Beckett's best.

5 out of 5 stars Beauty by the master.......2006-02-06

This play represents Beckett at what is without doubt his most accessible and possibly his most beautiful. Beckett adores using human memory and the pain of nostalgia in his works, and both of these themes are put to astonishing use in this play.

In 'Krapp's Last Tape', our protagonist Krapp, now in his late 60s, plays back tapes that he has recorded on previous birthdays. Every year this task becomes a more and more onerous one, and every year he is more and more embarassed by "that stupid b**tard I took myself for thirty years ago". The pain of reconstructing the past is a pain that Beckett uses to dolourous effect throughout his prose and dramatic works and its use is particularly powerful here.

Although this play is in fact a monologue, it would appear to take the form of a conversation between a past and present Krapp. This allows the spectator to witness a striking decline in the morale and optimism of the play's protagonist in the intervening thirty years. One is left to assume that the mental attitude of the character will continue to rot over the miserable years that are left to him.

This beautiful rendering of sadness and human pain, is typical of one of the most astonishing and talented writers of the modern era.

    5 out of 5 stars Beckett's most human drama........2000-01-26

Although it is probably his most conventional play, this is my favourite Beckett work. It is as bleak as Godot and despairing as End Game. It is also as funny as these tragicomic masterpieces. What is different here is that Krapp is less of a pawn, or fragment of an idea than the other characters, we are given access to his past, to his fundamental ambivalences (the desire for solitude and companionship), his apprehension of beauty. It is remarkable to see on stage a whole series of seperate selves contained in the one entity Krapp. The play is depressingly, inevitable circular, and the sense of repetition (note the extraordinary variations on light and darkness) throughout the stories the younger Krapp tells is not continuity, but an awareness of death, failure, old age. The play is also a comment on the nature of theatre going itself: in listening to his old tapes, Krapp becomes, as well as an actor, an audience, and in interpreting what he hears, a critic. This Shakespearean self-reflexivity only adds to the melancholy of the film's close.

    4 out of 5 stars -=-.......1998-10-23

Krapp's Last Tape is a humorous one act play involving a man named Krapp. Recording his life, he looks back on recorded spools of his life. The recorded spools talk about previous spools years earlier. Always with the same attitude towards just about everything, Krapp does not change as he ages. His life is a circular cycle as opposed to a straight line. He is figuratively constipated. Fun to read and entertaining.

    Book Description

When a wealthy English man-about-town attempts to make advances to the beautiful twenty-year-old debutante Caroline Martin, she haughtily refuses him, thus assuring a remorseless series of punishments. As revenge, the wealthy man orders Caroline's abduction by the members of a white slavery ring who cater to the perverted desires of the aristocracy. Sequestered in a remote Moroccan mountain prison, her new mistress and a sinister assistant begin Caroline's tutelage - an education in sexual submission that will prepare her for her real mentor. Volume II recounts the history of Brigid, who has unwisely caused the prosecution of a wealthy admirer. As retribution, he has Brigid stolen away to the notorious Cambina Alta plantation. Naked and bound before the sadism of Colonel Manrique and the perversities of the Comte de Xantra, Brigid endures the unyielding discipline of erotic enslavement until she is ready to welcome the master who has chosen her.

    5 out of 5 stars Part 1 - See Captive's Journey for Part 2.......2002-01-06

"Captive's Journey" picks up where "The Captive" leaves off. It is also the first part of "Sentence to Servitude". Read this book or the first half of "Sentence to Servitude" and then get "Captive's Journey". You'll find it well worth the time. "Captive's Journey" is also a good read on it's own, but you miss the initial setup chapters that show Caroline's fall into slavery.

4 out of 5 stars Well written, but far-fetched!.......2000-10-03

Rather than resulting in a well-trained and submissive slave, we get an unwilling participant who appears to need hospitalization rather than punishment. Extreme in the physical and not written well enough to get into the emotions (other than anger and fear) bet we really never get into the head of Caroline. Could have been a lot longer book. The ending is lame in that it leaves the reader hanging... "so what happened?" An easy read in one sitting.

2 out of 5 stars Where did the author go?.......2000-04-12

The author spent alot of time building a beginning to a very good story line and then abandoned it before the first fifty pages were completed. The only character that I could even remotely relate to was dropped off in the first or second chapter. I kept reading in hopes that the author would follow thru, but was disappointed. This book is published proof that the publisher didn't read beyond the first fifty pages. If I were Blue Moon publishing I wouldn't have let this one get beyond my slush pile. Don't waste your money if you're after erotica with any kind of story line.

    4 out of 5 stars For the Hard Core S&M, B&D lover.......2000-03-07

I just finished reading this book, and althought its not the best erotica that I've read, it certainly was worth the money I spent on it. Its alot harsher, not as "fairy tale" like as other S&M novels I've read. So for those of weak heart, you've been warned. I agree with other reviews that the book has a unique ending. Its abrupt, and in the true dominant style, it leaves you wanting more. The focus was on the training of the slave, and not the outcome of that training. (possible idea for new novel?) This book leaves you aching if you are one who is openminded, shocked if you are of the faint at heart.

Goethe's most complex and profound work, Faust was the effort of the great poet's entire lifetime. Written over 60 years, it can be read as a document of Goethe's moral and artistic development. Faust is made available to the English reader in a completely new translation that communicates both its poetic variety and its many levels of tone. The language is present-day English, and Goethe's formal and rhythmic variety is reproduced in all its richness.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Part II sucks the life out of Part I--read Marlowe.......2006-06-16

If you have read (and not just seen) Goldman's "The Princess Bride," you will understand my reaction to this classic. The short of it is that Marlowe's "Dr. Faustus" is a more-to-the-point rendering of the classic tale. Goethe starts strong, but Part II loses focus, and dulls the story.

The play is called "Faust," therefore our focus should be on Faust, as the focus of "The Hobbit" is on the Hobbit Bilbo. Goethe does this to perfection in the first part of the story. Mephisto's seduction of Faust is palpable--you can taste the evil dripping of every page, and you twist in time with Faust as he wavers back and forth under Mephito's barrage.

However, Part II does not follow logically from the events in Part one. Instead of focusing on the decline and fall of Dr. Henry Faust, we get setting after setting after setting. Goethe's main gimmick is the Pleasure Garden, which takes place in Oberon's Enchanted Forest. Furthermore, there are ample helpings of Greco-Roman mythology that sent me packing to my "Bulfinch's Mythology." This is all nice, but if we wanted Homer or the Bard, we would go to the source. As Bruce R. McConkie said, "Don't drink below the horses."

This brings me to William Goldman. Part of the humor in "The Princess Bride" is that it is "the good parts version." Marlowe's "Dr. Faustus" should be considered "the good parts version" of Goethe's retelling. A lot of Goethe's flourishes and irrelevant asides could be excised without any violence to the plot and the story telling. Of course Goethe was building on Marlow's work, but in several places, he went a too far.

I do not hate Goethe's version. Psychologically, and romantically it is a better work. The seduction scenes are longer and more realistic, unlike Marlowe, whose seduction is slightly better than Palpatine's beguiling of Anakin. The interaction between Faust and Helen is meatier, and that much more entertaining.

However, the ending was the most disappointing ending conceivable: deus ex machina by virtue of grace. So eat, drink and be merry (and sell you soul to boot), for mercy CAN rob justice, and we CAN be saved in our sins, not from our sins.

2 out of 5 stars more than butchered. Pureed.......2005-10-10

This has got to be the most dumbed-down version of Faust I have ever come across. Where as any good english translation reads like poetry that tells a story this version reads like two guys in a coffee shop having a conversation. Honestly all the beauty of words that Goethe spent so much effort putting to perfection is dumbed down to such a layman level that a lot of the effect of his genius is lost in this version. I was terribly dissappointed with this version when I got it. Don't buy this translation unless you have no ability whatsoever to understand poetic language.

what basalt! what flare! faust is and always be one of those megalo-gigantic characters that continue to inspire drama and thought for centuries. he may even be literatures's most allur-ing, most sympathetic and most fascinating character. for here is a man who succumbs to the temptation that all of us wrestle with time to time yet on how grand a scale does he accomplish it! all of us from time to time consider selling our souls to the devil, all of us have considered attempting to swindle the fool-ish of capital, or thought of joining a corrupt financial firm so as to at last satiate our lust for wealth and power. it is in our nature for we humans to hunger for the easier, the more com-fortable, the more efficient and often, frustrated with the fruits that God rewards to the pious, we instead slurch into the manacles of the sinister and bind our souls to the fiends where profit is assured! and faust succumbs to these temptations and not simply on a petty insignificant scale he does so in gargantua! he summons the devil himself and agrees to exchange his immortal soul for twenty four years of unlimited puissance!
yet goethe unlike marlowe or the anonymous german author of 1587 rather than use this as a simple morality play and a vehicle for spreading christian obedience instead employs it for a study of one of the greatest human dilemmas, namely our combat against the lechers of vice and the apparent contradic-tion that the injustice profit while the obedient suffer! vol-canica! blare! how my heart riots as i read this epic poem! how the human quandary shines into me in limpid array! and then in part two after a host of death and bedlam faust embarks on his quest for redemption and his attempt to improve mankind. it is a star-glorious adventure, bold, quaking and sublime.

... how the work has been translated. Goethe spent more or less his whole life on writing and improving this drama. In the original text nearly every line rhymes with another. In fact, there are only a few exceptions.
It's sad that all that is gone with the translation. In my opinion a lot of the magic surrounding the text disappeared, too.
If possible, you should definately read it in german.(only if you're really good) It's hard enough to fully understand it even if german is your native language.
    Quotation: (beginning)
    Faust: Habe nun, ach! Philosophie,
    Juristerei und Medizin,
    Und leider auch Theologie
    Durchaus studiert, mit heißem Bemühn.
Da steh ich nun, ich armer Tor!
    Und bin so klug als wie zuvor;
    Heiße Magister, heiße Doktor gar
Und ziehe schon an die zehen Jahr
Herauf, herab und quer und krumm
Meine Schüler an der Nase herum-
Und sehe, daß wir nichts wissen können!
Das will mir schier das Herz verbrennen.
    ....

    Marthens Garten
    MARGARETE: Versprich mir, Heinrich!
    FAUST: Was ich kann!
MARGARETE: Nun sag, wie hast du's mit der Religion?
Du bist ein herzlich guter Mann,
Allein ich glaub, du hältst nicht viel davon.
    FAUST: Laß das, mein Kind! Du fühlst, ich bin dir gut;
Für meine Lieben ließ' ich Leib und Blut,
Will niemand sein Gefühl und seine Kirche rauben.
    ...
    I LOVE these parts!

4 out of 5 stars Goethe the philosopher.......2004-05-21

Goethe and his work cannot be read in translation. It is necessary to learn German to understand the depth of his work. German is made of intranslatable words which have a spiralling meaning.
Goethe in Europe and Britain is still very much a prominent figure of writing. His work is allegorical, heavy and fantastic. There are thick and luscious lines which cannot be forgotten.
Translation or not, Faust must be read.

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction to the masters of fantasy........2007-08-29

I originally bought this collection simply for G.R.R. Martin's story. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I really enjoyed all of the stories included. Robin Hobb, whom I have not previously read was especially good. And the Raymond E. Feist story of the messenger was great. Basically, this collection does a great job of introducing the reader to a wide and varied number of fantasy authors. I found it at Barnes & Noble in the bargin section. It was a great deal! Get it if you can find it!

5 out of 5 stars Going back for more.......2006-08-28

Both Legends I and II are must haves for any SF/Fantasy fan. I orginally purchased Legends I for Robert Jordan's and Tad William's short stories. I then promptly put it up on my shelf for a few years. I picked up Legends II for the Robin Hobb short. I then also filed it on my shelf. Somehow I have made it through tons of fantasy while dodging some of the most "advertised" names. I recently ran out of books to read. In my search for new authors, I scowered the net, and asked several friends for recommendations. One of my friends suggested I pick up Terry Pratchett, my net search said try George R.R. Martin... I had a fleeting thought that "hey they are popular, wonder if they are in Legends". Sure enough they are and then some. I pulled both Legends I and II off of my shelf and devoured several of the stories that I had previously ignored. It made a perfect way of deciding which authors I would like to read more of and which ones I could probably pass on. Both Legends I and II are treasures which should not be overlooked. I sincerly hope there is a Legends III.

2 out of 5 stars disappointed in ebook.......2006-01-27

I recently purchased the electronic format hoping I could free up some shelf space because I already own the hardback.

What a disappointment. I expected links in the Table of Contents but there wasn't even a Table of Contents.

I'd return this if I could. If it was print, I would.

Two stars only because I liked the print book.

5 out of 5 stars It's better than they think........2004-12-24

    This is a phenomenal collection.

There has been a tendency among reviewers to compare this volume with the first in the series. The first "Legends" collection (Buy it if you don't have it!) showcased such amazing items as an original Gunslinger story (by Stephen King) and the fundamental prequel to "The Wheel of Time" (Robert Jordan). Let's face it: that's a tough act to top.

And yet, this volume holds its own and more. From the missing fragment of Shannara (Terry Brooks) to an original "American Gods" novella (Neil Gaiman) and even an Otherland epilogue (Tad Williams - one of the best in our time), "Legends II" has both a broader scope and a far more intense vision than the original. Any one of these novellas could carry the book alone.

Is "Legends II" better than the first "Legends"? Tough question. It's close. The only thing I can say for certain is that there needs to be a "Legends III". It's too good to stop with just two. (Besides, how else will we ever find out how Ser Duncan the Tall survives long enough to... But I don't want to spoil it for you. Read it yourself!)

4 out of 5 stars Generally a good display of these author's work........2004-10-18

Here is an overview of all the short novels in this collection:
Robin Hobb:Her prior works were definately a whole lot better, but not too bad.It was mildly menotenous and pretty sad, but it had some worth.
George R.R. Martin: I don't know how this story compares to A Game of Thrones and the rest because I haven't read them, but I thought it was pretty mediocre. No magic or anything appears in it, and the whole plot is pretty insignificant. I liked the characters, but I didn't really care about what was going on. Yet it did not turn me away from the possibility of trying out some of Martin's books some day.
Orson Scott Card:Card is a science fiction writer and as far as I am concerned does not belong in this collection. I *loved* Ender's Game, but his whole Alvin the Maker series' plot doesn't really hold together. Honestly, an alternate history with folklore magic incorporated in it? How crazy is that?
Diana Gabaldon:Just not my type, but I know lots of other people like her, so I won't discourage anyone to read her.
Robert Silverberg:Pretty good, went through some important historical events in Majipoor, not quite as good as his story in the previous Legends, but still not all that bad.I encourage you to try Lord Valentine's Castle, its REALLY good.
Tad Williams:Interesting, but I haven't read Otherland so I couldn't really understand everything. Nevertheless worth reading.
Anne McCaffrey:Just like Card,McCaffrey is a science fiction author. She doesn't belong in this collection. The story wasn't spectacular either, you have to have read Pern to get what's going on.
Raymond E. Feist:GREAT. It was exciting,it went through important historical events in Midkemia, and it had a character you cared enough about to keep on reading. It brought back happy memories of reading Magician.
Elizabeth Haydon:Also really good. It got me interested in reading her other books. It was as enchanting and ominous as any fantasy story needs to be.
Neil Gaiman:Terrible. I hope to God that American Gods and Neverwhere are better than this story. It's utterly boring, has a pretty unappealing character, and doesn't even have a magical fantasy feel to it. Stupid.
Terry Brooks:Pretty good, however, you need to have read Shannara, like me, to understand everything that's going on, and the topic isn't the best thing he could have written about. It shouldn't discourage you from reading Shannara, because it really is a GREAT series. Yet overall pretty good.

    Book Description

The 388th Bombardment Group (H) arrived at Station 136, Knettishall, England, in mid-1943 and sent B-17s against Nazi Germany for two years, until its mission was accomplished. The Group stood down in June, 1945. This is the compelling story of the men of the 388th, the combat crews and the ground support, told in their own words. Here, in this first of two volumes, are their true, detailed and enthralling accounts of air combat and base life, of terror in the skies and mischief on the ground, tales of Knettishall, The Country Club of the Eighth Air Force, of leaves in London and forced POW marches, of wartime romances, the horror of combat, personal tragedies and heroic escapes. Tales of fear and pride, loneliness and resolve; tales of life and death. Through personal reminiscences, mission diaries, photographs, daily bulletins, base newsletters, newspaper articles and radio interviews, the 388th Anthology tells the full and exciting story of what it was like to be there as history was made and the world was saved.

More diaries and personal accounts and glimpses into base life from the daughter of a 388th navigator

5 out of 5 stars From the next generation.......2002-02-21

My father was a member of the 388th [Bombardment] Group and I have been searching for any information I can find about him and his crew and what they did and felt. I know and have met several of the people featured in the book which makes it even more exciting to me. My father was on many of the missions described in the book, so I can imagine his feelings. It is very personal to me. It is also the kind of book you can pick up and put down and skip around. I especially liked the daily newsletter and bulletins since I had never seen that sort of information.

    5 out of 5 stars A Timely Tribute.......2002-02-07

This book and its companion piece second volume are outstanding tributes to the heros of World War Two, and they couldn't come at a better time. The heros are dying and it's important that we remember who they were and what they did. As a vet myself, I can tell you that the 388th Anthology is one of the most complete histories of a bomb group I've ever seen, and the details of these stories are amazing. Not only are the stories exciting and moving, but the Anthology is an impressive historical work and I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars Great 8th Air Force Book!.......2001-12-29

A friend gave me this book, and I read it in one weekend. It's unlike any WWII history I've ever seen. There are diaries, memoirs, public relations stories, reports from the 388th Bomb Group's headquarters - it really gives you the big picture of what life must have been for these airmen and their ground support. Some stories made me laugh; others made me cry. The epilogue really brought out the emotions. Read it cover to cover, or skip randomly through the individual stories. Either way you choose, I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best WWII Books I've Ever Read!.......2001-12-29

After a friend gave me a copy of 388th Anthology, Volume 1, I just knew I had to get this second volume as well. These are no ordinary histories of the air war in Europe; they are actually compilations of memoirs, diaries, articles from Stars & Stripes and other newspapers, and reports from the 388th Bomb Group's base at Knettishall, England between 1943 and 1945. For anyone who has wanted to understand the lives of the men who served in aerial combat, these books are "must" reading.

The First Alcibiades is a conversation between Socrates and Alcibiades. Socrates is represented in the character which he attributes to himself in the Apology of a know-nothing who detects the conceit of knowledge in others. The two have met already in the Protagoras and in the Symposium; in the latter dialogue, as in this, the relation between them is that of a lover and his beloved. But the narrative of their loves is told differently in different places; for in the Symposium Alcibiades is depicted as the impassioned but rejected lover; here, as coldly receiving the advances of Socrates, who, for the best of purposes, lies in wait for the aspiring and ambitious youth. Alcibiades, who is described as a very young man, is about to enter on public life, having an inordinate opinion of himself, and an extravagant ambition. Socrates, 'who knows what is in man,' astonishes him by a revelation of his designs
