Great Overview of Condensed Songs.......2004-05-13
I quit piano lessons in the eighth grade (the familiar story of the indimidating piano teacher) but I kept playing on my own all through high school and this is the book I played over and over. It has a fantastic overview of many American musical genres of the first half of the 20th century, occasionally dipping slightly back to the late 19th.
The arrangements are fairly easy to play for the intermediate piano player yet they sound deceptively impressive. Guitar chords are also present.
The only reason I didn't give it a five-star rating is that, in keeping with the Reader's Digest tradition, this book is condensed; only the choruses of the songs are present. Having grown up with this book, I had no idea that most of these songs had verses not included here. So if you need the entire song, this book won't help you. But if you want a great, playable overview of American songs from the 20th century, then this book is a good choice.
Great chording.......2002-11-24
This is a great songbook for the indtermediate player. The arrangements are full of wonderful rich harmony chording that is not hard to follow. I love a great deminished 7th chord and this book has it. I own five of the Readers Digest song books and whish I had more. In particular I would suggest "The Treasury of Great Showtunes" from this same series.
Has a lot of standards, but arrangements are pretty simple.......2002-05-01
I bought this because I wanted a book that had a lot of the standards. It does. I like to play and sing with my kids (toddlers) and with extended family on different occaisions. I like that it has different holiday songs, ("When Irish Eyes are Smilin'") some patriotic stuff ("America") and plain old songs ("By the light of the Silvery Moon." ) I do wish that the arrangements were a little more difficult...I am not really a great player (one year of lessons in Junior High) but I found myself putting in extra chords and endings. But I am not sophisticated enough to really know what I am doing here, so I have to make it up. Some of the the Gershwin stuff was better, but still cut down. I would call it just beyond beginner. It reminds me of the kind of stuff you hear kids play at piano lessons (year 2). Still, even I am confortable with adding a little here and there, so you can too. OR if you just want to open the page and play a whole new song with few or no mistakes, a novice will like it. Plus it has many songs you would like in an anthology and a nice spiral-like binding--hence the 4 stars above. Overall, a nice book.
Book is okay if you are looking for "I only have eyes for U.......2000-02-06
I didn't know what was in this book because it was shrink-wrapped at Borders but took a chance b/c it was on sale. It is NOT for beginners. I was looking for a book with fun songs for me to play on the piano w/my 2.5 year old daughter, but this is not what we were looking for! It may be what you want though.
Here's the contents: There are 8 categories of songs: Down Memory Lane (Roaring 20s, World War I, Jazz Age), All-Time Broadway Hit Parade (Gershwin, Richard Rodgers, Cole Porter), Great Music from the Movies (Dick Powell, Humphrey Bogart), Swing Years (late 30s and early 40s, Louis Armstrong, Guy Lombardo), Treasury of Operetta & Semi-Classical Hits (Victor Herbert, Sigmund Romberg), Gaslight Varieties, Greensleeves, and Music to Lift the Spirits (anthems, hymns).
The book says each song has been arranged for piano, guitar and organ. It says the arrangements can be easily adapted to any treble-clef C instrument such as accordion, chromatic harmonica, violin, flute, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, recorder, marimba and xylophone.
Great songs, simpler arrangements........1998-12-24
An excellent book. But we love better the (what I think is the original version of it), 'Family Songbook, 137 songs to play and sing' by Tony Fiyalko. We love it better because the arrangements are more complex and exciting - more like what the big bands play, yet not that much harder to play. As the song selection in the two books is almost identical, both are superb. Actually, a couple of the songs are exactly the same arrangment. The worst thing about having both books is the occasional key changes from book to book - it hurts my fingers.
This is a very good book - like all of the Reader Digest song books. It only looses marks because of the direct comparison to Tony Fiyalko's book, which is also available in paperback on Amazon.com.

Book Description
From now on, backseat pleas of "Are we there yet?" will be replaced with "Can we go for another ride?" Introducing ALL-AMERICAN CAR-I-OKE-yes, karaoke for the car-a kit including a book of 15 great family sing-along tunes and activities galore, an accompanying CD of music, and three booklets of lyrics for the back seat and the way-back.
Sing a gutsy, rocking version of Proud Mary-and learn some cool seat-dancing moves to go with it. Put on a show voice for Give My Regards to Broadway. Play a mad-lib version of mix-and-match lyrics with the Are We There Yet Blues. Pair off for the cowboy duet Red River Valley, raise a tear with Danny Boy, put on your best hillbilly voice and tell the story of Big Rock Candy Mountain (with some new child-friendly lyrics). And take the Car-i-oke Challenge: Try to hit the high note-land of the free-eeeeeee!-of The Star-Spangled Banner.
The CD, recorded in Nashville, ranges from big instrumental productions with full horns to jug-band fun; vocals are added where needed to help the singers along. The 64-page book includes full lyrics to all the songs, plus tips on singing, road song quizzes, travel trivia, lessons in back seat drumming, and other musical activities. The three booklets have just the lyrics. It's an all-American, all-family musical extravaganza.
Customer Reviews:
Great activity!.......2007-09-04
This was good for at least an hour of no-bickering drive time. It isn't "kiddie" music, so it's entertaining for the adults, as well. Several extra copies of the lyrics mean you can lose one without harm. The cover and binding are durable, to put up with the abuses of living in a family vehicle. I'm looking at the holiday version next.
Road Tested and Approved!.......2007-01-23
I road tested this item with my three children on a long car ride a couple of years ago. It was a huge hit with my family, so I highly recommend it at my website [...]. Even after two years, we still use it frequently on trips, so it has given us more than our money's worth.
It comes with a CD for the music and several extra copies of the lyrics in smaller booklets for everyone in the car (no fighting!). The CD does a great job of giving "musical cues" when you are supposed to start singing, and there is such a variety that there is sure to be something that everyone will like - including the adults!
One of our favorites is the "make your own blues" song. My kids loved making up their own lines for that song in addition to the suggested lyrics. They also really love "Big Rock Candy Mountain" which was full of hilarious kid humor. The backseat drumming is also very popular. One thing we also love to do with this is to practice singing the Star Spangled Banner together. It can be a hard song to sing sometimes, but my kids are now pros and can belt out our National Anthem with pride.
We never go on a road trip without this item. I'll be buying the Christmas version of this next.
Entertained my kids on a long car ride.......2006-11-03
I wasn't sure how this would go over with my 7 and 9 year old girls, but we had a lot of fun with it on a l-o-n-g car ride home from vacation this summer. Not all the songs were familiar to us, but learning the lyrics was part of the fun.
This gets three thumbs up from the girls and me and one from my husband, who was driving, and glad no one was complaining about being in the car so long.
all out fun with the american carioke.......2003-10-10
bought this book because my grandchildren and I enjoy singing together. we weren't in a car; we were in my house. we sang all of the songs and had a rollicking good time. it was all very jolly; buy it!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent! A Complete and Thorough Guitar Book! .......2007-04-16
I have several guitar books as I have been learning to play for the past 2 years. I have alot of instructional books and learned bits and pieces. This book is an excellent resource and covers almost every topic in great detail. Everything from chords, picking, blues, rock and country guitar, guitar effects, amps, etc. Also includes instruction and pictures on repairing and maintaining your guitar, adjusting the action, changing strings, etc. A valuable resource and worth owning yourself.
An outstanding instructional which stands apart from similar-sounding guitar 'how-to' guides.......2005-09-05
Want to learn guitar from a book? There are plenty of slimmer guides on the market - but none with the depth and detail of Moran Illustrated Guitar, which packs in color illustrations of techniques. From playing different kinds of chords to power rock, single notes, slides, string muting and much more, Moran Illustrated Guitar packs in the step-by-step close-up color photos so it's hard to go wrong. An outstanding instructional which stands apart from similar-sounding guitar 'how-to' guides.
This is the best Educative Book .......2005-08-03
This book I would extremely, highly recommended for beginners and I mean it. Sure I might be just a kid but trust me I have this book and I know a good book when I see one. Its more likely to keep you occupied since it in color and it shows you pictures of everything so you can see and understand the things it tells you to do. This book tells the history, parts, basic concepts, how to hold, fretting, picking, tuning, how to practice on, how to play a guitar for all acoustic, classical, and electric types of guitars. It shows you practicing techniques and doesn't just say to do things you don't understand. Teaches you to play different chords (barre chords and power chords), strumming patterns, single notes, and suggests songs for practice. Teaches you to read tablature(sheet music for guitars), chord diagrams, guitar symbols. Teaches different types of music rock, blues, folk, country, and classical guitar. Great thing about it is you should buy this book before purchasing a guitar because it gives you a lot of tips on which type of guitar you want to purchase. Explains "all" the care and maintainace required in a guitar and "all" its accessories. Mentions home recording for people who are starting to make bands, CDs or stuff. It has suggestions for reference material as well if you can't find the information you want. I don't think I disliked this book at all. For all the tiny details they might of not included I would look at the reference material for that. They don't specifically talk about certain guitars but more in general. (...)
Another Maran success... .......2005-07-04
Maran Graphics has once again come out with a book that absolutely rocks... Maran Illustrated Guitar.
Content: Guitar Basics; Getting Ready To Play; Reading Music; Playing Basic Chords; Playing Barre Chords And Power Chords; Playing Single Notes; Articulation Techniques; Playing Rock Guitar; Playing The Blues; Playing Folk And Country Music; Playing Classical Guitar; Buying A Guitar; Guitar Accessories; Guitar Care And Maintenance; Home Recording; Quick Reference; Index
As with all other Maran Illustrated books, they've done an excellent job combining clear photos and instructive illustrations to guide you during the learning process. They even use multiple exposure photos with "ghosting" to show fingering sequences so that you can tell what movement should be combined with finger positioning. Very nicely done. In addition to just showing you how to play, they also cover the history of guitars and the masters of the instrument. It ends up giving you an appreciation for the instrument that you don't normally see in a "how to play" book. I like how they go beyond mere mechanics to show you how to care for your instrument, from stringing to cleaning to transportation. Basically, this covers the entire spectrum of the subject.
I've often wanted to learn to play the guitar. My wife plays and one of my sons play. I can't say that I have a lot of time to learn it right now, but at least I now have the main tool I need to help me get there when I'm ready. Excellent book, and highly recommended if you want to learn to play...
The best beginner's book I've seen!.......2005-06-25
Back in high school (a LONG time ago) I dabbled in guitar, but haven't touched one in decades. I've been seriously thinking about taking up this instrument again when, lo and behold, a review copy of "Maran's Illustrated Guitar" showed up in my mailbox -- probably because I've reviewed other books with creative graphics layouts. It certainly wasn't because of any expertise on the guitar! But God works in strange ways, they say...
This book is absolutely the best beginner's guide I've seen, and the one I'm actually using to learn the guitar. It covers everything from the history of the guitar, famous guitarists, types of guitars (classical, acoustic, electric), how to buy, clean, repair, change strings, perform adjustments and maintenance -- and of course, how to play it. Not only does this book have the usual chord charts, it has actual photos showing how to place the fingers on the frets. And it doesn't just cover basic chords. It also includes a section on reading music and playing single notes -- something I did not find in other beginner's books. After learning the basics, you can turn to specific chapters for pointers on Rock, Blues, Country, Folk, or Classical guitar, with different picking and strumming styles clearly explained. (For each section, the model holding the guitar is dress appropriately for the genre -- a nice touch!) There is also a chapter on amplifers and other equipment for electric guitar players, and a section on setting up a home recording studio.
One of the best things I learned is that there are now electronic tuners for guitars (and most other instruments) -- something that did not exist in my high school days. I immediately bought one. As with everything else in this book, there was a clear description of the types of tuners, the pros and cons of each, etc., complete with photos.
The graphical layout is very well done and pleasing to the eye. The photos are interspersed with the text to get away from the boring "Gutenberg box" effect. Another plus is that the binding is flexible enough for the book to lay flat while playing -- a major convenience when both of your hands are busy holding the guitar. In short, this is a beautiful book and a pleasure to use. Highly recommended!

Book Description
Bob Marley began writing lyrics in the early 1960's and he continued to produce them until his passing in 1981. Critics have called these songs the best of the millennium. Yet,few readers have ever read Marley's magic on the page. For the first time, his eldest daughter Cedella has made a selection of her father's most prophetic and personal poems, insights, and conversational messages. Here are meditations to soothe the soul and thoughts to penetrate the mind. Here too is an encapsulated life of Bob Marley, the man. In his spare writings we can see the ebb and flow of his journey as an artist and a humanitarian. Packaged for purse and pocket, this colleciton is sure to find a place in everyone's heart.
Customer Reviews:
What is it you say most?.......2007-05-17
Since life is just an illusion to reflect back at ourselves, I am glad to have the chance to ponder what Bob Marley thought and spoke most of. I agree with a lot of them, but not all. This is definately a book of "less is more". Makes me want to write "me own". Maybe he knows his name now, "51" or if he comes again "56" will we know him? "55" He's the rainbow too.
56 Thoughts from 56 Hope Road.......2005-07-20
Some are lyrics....which are good, but would have liked to see more quotes.
Pretty Good Stuff.......2005-06-29
Personally, I enjoyed this booklet. It contains some very thought-provoking quotes from the don gargon, Bob Marley. What a way to capture these thoughts, Cedella and Gerald! Nice work entirely.
The Prophet Among Us.......2004-12-07
After the 60s, the movement for a better world faded into the 70s, and dissappeared entirely in the 80s. At least in the USA. God and his disciples were still alive and well in Jamaica. Instead of fishermen, they were musicians. When you listen deeply, you'll hear the message clearly. Bob Marley carried the truth for our times. That torch still burns in his music and the writing that came afterward. Read 56 Thoughts. It will touch you, move you, and enlighten you. 56 Thoughts is a book you will never put down. It will go with you every where because it is pure soul from a philosopher who knew what he was talking about.
True Bob.......2004-12-03
This book by Cedella Marley sets the record straight in one-line and short off-the-cuff wisps of light and dark, humorous and serious wisdom that Bob Marley was famous for. I read it once a day, twice a day, three times a day, as Doctor Jamaica recommends.

Book Description
There is more to sound recording than just recording sound. Far from being simply a tool for the preservation of music, the technology is a catalyst. This is the clear message of Capturing Sound, a wide-ranging, deeply informative, consistently entertaining history of recording's profound impact on the musical life of the past century, from Edison to the Internet.
In a series of case studies, Mark Katz explores how recording technology has encouraged new ways of listening to music, led performers to change their practices, and allowed entirely new musical genres to come into existence. An accompanying CD, featuring thirteen tracks from Chopin to Public Enemy, allows readers to hear what Katz means when he discusses music as varied as King Oliver's "Dippermouth Blues," a Jascha Heifetz recording of a Brahms Hungarian Dance, and Fatboy Slim's "Praise You."
Customer Reviews:
A great read........2005-09-08
Although being a scholarly work, fully footnoted and with a complete bibliograpy this book, unlike much of academic production, is a great read.
I enjoyed it immensly.
It is a good companion to Michael Channan's book on the same topic."Repeated Takes: A Short History of Recording and Its Effects on Music".
If you are interested in the history of recording or just curious about how what we listen to came to be the way it is this book will delight you.

Many of Eva's best songs.......2005-07-12
Very nicely written book including most of Eva's most popular songs. I particularly love the chords above the music to remind you what you need to do for each particular chord. Also nice is capo placement. If you are an Eva Cassidy fan, I recommend this book even if you are a beginner guitar player due to the ease of chords etc. I would have given it 5 stars, but some of my favorite songs are not in this book, so I need to figure those out for myself.

Book Description
Does music make kids smarter? At what age should a child begin music lessons? Where should you purchase an instrument? What should parents expect from a child's teachers and lessons? Raising Musical Kids answers these and many other questions as it covers everything from assembling a listening library for kids, to matching a child's personality with an instrument's personality, to finding musical resources in your community. Knowing that children can--and usually do--get most of their music education within the public school system, the author explores at length the features and benefits of elementary and secondary school programs, and shows how parents can make the schools work for them and their children. Throughout, Cutietta emphasizes the joy of participating in music for its own sake. Raising Musical Kids is a book that parents everywhere will treasure as a complete road map for developing their child's musical abilities.

aimed at parents, helpful for teachers too.......2005-01-28
I'm not a parent, but I am a viola and violin teacher. Cutietta's advice in this book is based on a solid foundation of research and experience. If the parents of all of my students would ponder and take to heart the things clearly and accurately written here, they (and their children) would get much more bang for their buck out of the lessons I teach. I could teach more efficiently. Students would progress faster. Some large roadblocks I spend a great deal of time removing from my student's and parent's minds during their lessons would be removed (or at least whittled down to manageable size) before I encountered them, thus making music lessons more productive, joyful, and fulfilling, for everyone involved.
No previous knowledge of music, child psychology, or educational technique is required -- this book is well-written, straight-shooting counsel for parents, with insights that an older student interested in getting music lessons would also find helpful. This book is definitely going to get a permanent place on my short list of books recommended for my students (or their parents).
A wonderful book.......2003-10-06
I have three children, ages 2-8, and I was given this book by my mom. As you can imagine, I have little time to read, but this book was so easy to read that I finished it in a few weeks of my spare time. Even the way the author explains the research behind the book is fascinating.
I have started doing many of the things suggested in the book and not only are they fun, but I can see my children starting to respond to music in a more sensitive and deep way.
This is an amazing book. Worlds better than most of the books for parents I have read.
Solid advice.......2002-05-01
As a professional musician I was prepared to totally hate this book. I was pleasantly surprised at the good solid advice this book offers. I am not a fan of the Suzuki method. I've walked out of many children's music programs embarassed at how poor the quality of the performance was. Then I had my own child, and even though I am a professional musician I had no idea how to raise my own musical child. My parents didn't have any answers, they happened to make me a musician all by accident. Whatever your goals and motivations for exposing your child to music this is a good book to get you started in the right direction.
Library Journal Gives Positive Review.......2001-12-06
RAISING MUSICAL KIDS received a starred Library Journal review in the December 2001 issue. The review concluded: "Cutietta's [book] will be one that parents refer to again and again. An authoritative addition for parenting collections in all public libraries."
A "starred" review means it is a recommended purchase by libraries.
A truly beneficial guide for parents.......2001-11-06
Finally! A book for parents that explains the sometimes confusing world of music education. This book takes a parent through early childhood activities, choosing a private teacher, how to get you kid to practice, to understanding the expectations of high school music programs and careers in music. Well-written, research-based but easy to read, and illustrated with cartoons, this is a must for every parent interested in sharing their love of music with their children. I highly recommend it!

A beautiful treatment of a "how-to" subject..........2005-06-13
I was recently sent a copy of the book Maran Illustrated Piano from the maranGraphics Development Group. It's another subject treatment using the "maran illustrated" technique, and again it's an excellent work...
Chapter List: Piano Basics; The Basics of Reading Music; Basic Hand Positions; Playing Scales; Playing Chords; Beyond the Basics of Reading Music; Tips to Improve Your Playing; Special Playing Techniques; Improvising and Playing with Others; Styles of Music; Buying and Caring for Your Piano; Quick Reference; Index
The Maran books use a graphic-intensive format with liberal use of color and heavy-stock paper. With Frank Horvat as the technical consultant, they take the reader through an informative history of the piano, famous composers, and the structure of the piano (along with the various styles and related instruments). From there, they get into how to read music as well as the basic hand positioning for playing. The material on reading music is well done for anyone who needs to acquire that skill, even if they aren't interested in the piano. The book then starts to show how to play scales, chords, and progressively more difficult pieces. It would be very easy to use this book to do your own self-learning program, and it'd be a great way to figure out if you want to take the next step and find a piano teacher to help you progress.
The illustrations and photography of hand placement jump off the pages with the high-quality printing and paper. The pictures of Horvat sitting at the piano look a little stilted, but there's only so much "action" you can add to those settings. The only photo series I didn't much care for in the book have to do with the piano pedals. The pedal photos have someone's black shoe, white sock, and bare leg in the frame. That's just wrong... :-)
Shoes and socks aside, this is an excellent choice if you are looking to learn how to play the piano on your own. You will gain a solid foundation with the instrument, and from there you can take it to whatever level appeals to you...
And now Yes, You Too can really learn to play the piano!.......2005-06-07
For all the many self-help, how-to books published The Maran Family has polished the book-led guide to learning to a fare-thee-well. This well-conceived and very well written book is an excellent introduction to the joys of sitting down in front of a piano keyboard and actually creating music instead of fantasies.
As one of the maranGraphics books (others include such wide ranging topics as Weight Training, Computer Guides, Dog training, Guitar, Yoga, and Knitting and Crocheting!), this volume uses the technical consulting of Frank Horvat, a composer, performer and piano teacher, and then applies the approach to the keyboard in a highly visual series of photographs and schematics that begin a survey of the types of keyboard instruments, the history of the piano, and progress to the basics of what makes a piano make music and ultimately walks the willing student through a very sound technique of learning.
As a life-long pianist I am amazed at the facility developed in this beautifully designed book. For those who question learning to play the piano by a 'how to' book, just peruse the careful steps and clarity of instruction offered by this helpful guide. Much musicology is included and many examples of fine piano music are used in the lessons. Whether it is the classical route you wish or the popular medium of chord based music or the intricacies of blues and improvisation, the steps are here. At the end of the book is a fine discussion on how to choose your piano from the many types that exist and even a discussion on the various periods of piano music history (although brief these are succinctly to the point).
Terrific for the adults who moan 'if I'd only taken lessons as a child' as well for the young students who are willing to commit to the goal of learning to 'make their own music', this Illustrated Guide to the Piano is a solid source of didactics. And for those addicted to the computer, there are even "MP3 files available to listen to and play along with for all the chords, scales, exercises and practice pieces in this book." Truly a book for the 21st Century! Grady Harp, June 05

Family Sonbook of Faith and Joy.......2006-06-03
I purchased this book on May 22, 2006 from Floridabooks.com. It was listed as NEW. It is NOT NEW. There are pencil notations on some of the songs. It is in good condition for a used book, but it is Not new. I did receive the book promptly, but it is obvious that the book had been used. It had been taken care of but I feel that I was misled. I paid a higher price thinking that I would get a NEW book.
