Such a cute story--I love the surprise ending and so will the kids!

4 out of 5 stars Great Read Aloud.......2007-05-25

This is one of my faves for preschool storytime.

The pictures are fun, the rhymes are natural and the surprise ending is a hoot.

Karma Wilson is a great author for those squirmy 3 year olds, but her books appeal to older preschool and primary grade children, too.

5 out of 5 stars Great kids' book!!.......2007-04-11

We found this book at the library recently and my 3 year old LOVES it! He wanted me to read it over and over. Mom enjoyed it too - wonderful illustrations and the poetic lines were fun to read. I would highly recommend it. We've also read a few of the Bear books and Never, EVER Shout in a Zoo (which is another favorite of my 3 year old).

4 out of 5 stars great children's book.......2007-03-14

I'm a huge fan of Karma Wilson, and I'm hoping my two-year-old will be too. Ms. Wilson has a great ear for rhyme, and I always enjoy the illustrations. This is a fun book with a silly ending. Great for reading at bedtime.

4 out of 5 stars Moose Tracks.......2007-02-05

A great book enjoyed by my 4,5 and 7 year old. Terrific pictures with lots of detail for young non-readers to enjoy. Superb writing that is classic Karma Wilson. A great gift for any child -- boy or girl.

5 out of 5 stars Great Fun!.......2007-07-12

This book combines my son's favorite things: ants and trains. It was also a wonderful book for me to read out loud to him. It's my favorite children's book so far. And he loves it!!

5 out of 5 stars Utterly charming.......2007-06-28

Our four-year old loves this book (as do I). The pace is quick, the pictures lively, and the rhymes quirky and intelligent. You will enjoy reading this together.

4 out of 5 stars Great Read Aloud.......2007-05-25

This is one of my faves for preschool storytime reading.

The rhymes are natural, the plot is gripping and the pictures are large and humorous.

If you read to groups of preschoolers - or are doing a unit on insects at your primary school - don't miss this one.

5 out of 5 stars Fun funny funky book that has a good message.......2007-04-30

We found this book in a bookstore and bought it for the train theme (our son loves trains), but keep going back because it's funny, fun to read, has tongue twisters, and is all about saving this ant from a train on the track - so it has a good message (helping those weaker than us, not hurting an ant) to boot. It's not preachy though, the message is just a perk to a fun book that has a lot to talk about with a child. But mostly it's just more "fun" and savvy than a lot of kids' books!

5 out of 5 stars I Saw An Ant on the Railroad Track.......2007-04-03

THis book has become one of his favorites. The pictures and story are great for 3 yr olds.

Book Description

Definitive biography of the band behind hits like trans-Atlantic #1 "House of the Rising Sun" that briefly rivalled the Beatles and Stones for popularity, before relocating to San Francisco and re-emerging as a hitmaking Acid Rock band. Hours of new interviews contribute to this gripping portrait of a hugely talented group of musicians who never quite fulfilled their potential.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Definitive History of The Animals.......2003-10-18

This book follows The Animals from their Newcastle beginnings to their 1994 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, including discussions of The Animals changing lineups, evolving musical styles, and tempestuous reunions. To me, this book was far more interesting than either of Eric Burdon's biographies, both of which spent too much time talking about his partying and too little time talking about the music. And isn't the music what it's all about?

Of particular interest to me are the interviews with band members describing their opinions of the various songs the band recorded, the songs they liked and disliked, how the songs were selected, and who contributed what to the arrangements. Also of interest are discussions of the infighting and ego-clashes that ultimately destroyed the band before its time.

Author Sean Egan is not shy about weighing-in with his own evaluations of particular songs, and I found myself disagreeing with him in many cases (as when he proclaims that the British take of "We Gotta Get Out of This Place" is superior to the version released in America). But disagreeing about songs is part of the fun, right?

Band members Hilton Valentine and John Steel come across as thoroughly likeable and down-to-earth, Chas Chandler as possessing a steady business-sense which didn't flower until after the band's demise, Alan Price as somewhat prickly and distant (he did not make himself available for interviews), and Eric Burdon as charmingly-but-maddeningly vain and unpredictable, often throwing a wrench into the band's best-laid plans.

I've focused on the early Animals, but the book follows the band through the Eric Burdon and The Animals psychedelic era and beyond. This book goes a long way towards filling a void about a band that's had far too little written and said about it.

3 out of 5 stars Too much criticism...........2002-02-03

Although the book was somewhat informative, the author spent more time giving his own personal review of every track on every album Eric Burdon and/or The Animals recorded. He came across as somewhat opinionated and it was tough to sift through his personal opinions to get to the interesting stories & facts. Eric Burdon's autobiography (ies) are much more enjoyable to read and just as informative.

4 out of 5 stars Animal Behavior.......2001-12-18

Along with the Yardbirds, the Animals were the great overlooked band when it came to 60s biographies. No more. Yardites were finally rewarded last year with Greg Russo's exhaustive tome, ULTIMATE RAVE UP. Here, Sean Egan chronicles Newcastle's finest in a lucid and engaging bio that highlights the Geordies' thrilling music, clashing personalities and disaster-prone management. Good points: a thorough run-through of the band's history, freckled with commentary about their records, interesting road stories and a rock solid analysis about why the Animals were unable to build upon their massive early success. (Hints: Mike Jeffery; a lack of songwriting talent). The insightful interviews with John Steel, Hilton Valentine, Vic Briggs, Dave Rowberry, Zoot Money and Eric Burdon are the best part of this book. Bad points: Not enough photos; no commentary from Alan Price (though that's not Egan's fault, Price refused); and Egan's silly conclusion that the New Animals made better music than the originals (be honest - do YOU prefer "San Franciscan Nights" to "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood"?). Perhaps Price's instincts were sound - all of his ex-bandmates trash him, especially Burdon and Steel. On the other hand, Price's hoarding of the "House of the Rising Sun" royalties looks all the more suspicious when he refuses to defend himself. The erratic Burdon comes off as alternately charismatic, gutsy, obnoxious, backstabbing and goofy - sometimes all of the above on one page. Chas Chandler's role as the band's muscle and soul is contrasted by the others' assertion that he really couldn't play the bass that well. Hilton Valentine's LSD collapse is addressed tactfully, while John Steel comes off as the most likeable Animal - a laid-back guy with a talent for putting things in perspective. Given how volatile they were, it's amazing the Animals were able to get as far as they did. These guys made the Who look harmonious. If you're a fan of the band (or 60s Brit-rock), this book is for you. Just don't expect a happy ending.

4 out of 5 stars Dispassionate, informative, readable........2001-10-18

If you have an interest in the history of the Animals, from their Alan Price Combo days thru the "new" Animals, and to the two reunion albums of the original band, you'll enjoy this book. It covers all the appropriate bases, and has extensive comment by the band members (or most of the band members, I should say, since a few did not cooperative with the author, particularly Alan Price, who does not come off too well at the hands of his bandmates). The author seems to have a very objective view of the band's output on record. I found myself agreeing with his comments on songs and albums (some of which are very positive and some very negative--the Animals were, if anything, uneven) probably 95% of the time, and where we disagree, the differences were minor (he complements Inside Looking Out, just not as much as I would, etc.). One or two caveats--there are many typos and the prose is pretty prosaic. The book is very much focused on the band, and does not offer very much insight into the times and settings, so it is definitely geared towards fans of the group. If this is you, I recommend the book.

4 out of 5 stars Underated Band Finally Get Their Due.......2001-09-06

Finally, a long overdue book on one of the 60's most overlooked R&B power bands. While the omission of input from Alan Price is regretable, overall, the book covers lots of ground. Author Sean Egan does a good job of highlighting a time and era that many people today still find fascinating. Why wasn't Eric Burdon a huge star? That question is never really answered by Egan, but he does a wonderful job of relating the gory details of this band's numerous financial disasters. This is a good book to have, especially since it is nearly impossible to get ahold of Eric Burdon's biography,"I Used To Be An Animal, But I'm Alright Now." Fans of the group will not be disappointed. Egan could have delved deeper into the personal lives a bit more for my taste. As it is, he focuses on the music, which is what is important anyway. A great discography puts the final touches on this long overdue story of one of rock's great bands from 1960's England.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars My Daughters Love!! This.......2006-11-30

My two daughters (ages 2 and 4) request this book be read--at least once a day. It's a typical Dora the Explorer book with Boots. It has big words and colorful pictures. The stories are simple and not too long. I think it's probably geared toward the preschool/beginning grade school set.
Certain words have little "pictographs" with the word that it's for directly underneath it in smaller print. I suppose this is to help the child learn to read these certain words. Since my daughters are still pretty young (the oldest is now just learning the sounds different letters make; she already can recognize all the letters), we haven't really tried to use these little pictures in that way. Although, we've read this story so many times to them that they "read along" by reciting from memory certain parts of the story. All Dora the Explorer books are great fun for the kids because it involves them in the story much like the TV show does.
I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars My babies LOVE this book.......2005-10-23

We got this book from the library, but I had to buy my own copy of it. My twin baby boys love it. They are only 5 1/2 months old and this is the first book I've read to them that they are very interested in. I make the "Boo Hoo Hoo" and "Trek Trek Trek" sounds to them all the time and they smile and laugh. Highly recommend as one of the first books to read to a baby, and probably through toddler age.

4 out of 5 stars I promise this is a Very Very Silly book -Loving it!.......2004-11-12

Somewhere in an icy mountainous landscape, two silly parents are dispairing of their baby's refusal to eat anything - and are BOO-HOO-HOO!'ing loudly.
A small witch appears to gloat over knowing the solution & she doesn't have a lot of willpower bc the second they start their Boo-hoo-hoo! again she Shrieks STOP BLUBBERING & spills the beans - they need to go and track a yak bc yaks (milk) will stop the baby from starving.

The illustrations are fantastic and expressive, from the gloomy yak on the front cover to the dumpy little witch and goony kooky parents.

It is exceedingly silly, I promise you, and a delight to read aloud - especially if you specialise in crazy voices.
Your kids will shreik along and have great fun with the jolly text. Track a Yak!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!!!!!.......2003-04-22

I loved this book and all the others in the series so far! i think this book was really good because 1) George i knew was a stalker and im glad he finally got cought 4 it 2) i new cam was a fake and that carole should really be wit ben, even if he is annoying sometimes u can tell he really cares about her and 3) stevie really needed something new to keep that mind of hers occupied! i started reading the saddle club in like 4th grade and read up to #89 twice. i started the pine hallow series when it first came out but i was too young and there were only 4 books at the time. now i started the series again since im older and i just can't stop reading them! too bad there aren't as many of these books as there are of the saddle club! i hope ms. bryant keeps writing more of the saddle club books tho so that it will catch up to the begining of the pine hallow series. these books are great for older horse lovin girls! don't get discouraged by the first few books because horses become more involved as you go on! i hope u enjoy them as much as i did!

5 out of 5 stars ...definately not the style of the rest...........2002-10-12

I have all 17 Pine Hollow series books, and I have to say that this book (#16) is my absolute favorite. I really revolves around Callie and her problems with George. Most of the other Pine Hollow series is about horses, or shows, or boyfriends - but I found this one the most enjoyable to read because it really brings a new light to Callie's character. Makes her seem real in how George is haunting her. It still has plenty of horse things in there (about Stevie training for eventing - instead of her longtime favorite, Dressage) and Lisa and Scotts relationship - even a little bit of Ben and Carole. The only downfall is this is the second to last book in the series - but it's the best one of them all!

4 out of 5 stars Track Record (Pine Hollow 16).......2002-05-04

Track Record was a very well written book with a lot of differant areas to keep the reader interested.
Although the novel was mostly written around Callie and her problems with George, you got to read about how Stevie has decided to improve her dressage and compete in cross country and how Lisa and Scott might get together.
Although the novel was well written the conclusion left the reader in suspence, wondering what was going to happen to George and what Scott did to have bandaged knuckles when he walked out from the stable after finding Callie.
But all in all this was a fantastic novel and I can't wait until the next book comes to Australia so I can see what happens next.

5 out of 5 stars great story, great illustrations.......2003-02-19

This is a great book for budding young naturalists or scientists. M's Schlein tells the story of Harry Johnston and his trip to Africa to discover the okapi. She captures the reader's attention with the information while also teaching about the scientific method of investigation.

Besides the description of how Mr Johnston came to discover the okapi, M's Schlein also includes a complete description of the okapi and the way the okapi lives in its natural habitat.

M's Sanderson is a major contributor to this book. Her wonderful drawings detail the whole story - how the pygmies assisted in locating the okapi, what the okapi look like and their habitat, and various genus and species.

The book and illustrations work together so perfectly it would be good for everybody to read this book. It would be especially good for children that have an interest in animals or have scientific bent their mind. The more artistically inclined child would definitely enjoy the drawings.

Get the book and find out about this strange new animal.
