Great reference material.......2007-05-19
The vocal score for "Into the Woods," while not practical for use at the piano due to the nature of the binding, is a terrific study aid for those interested in analyzing Sondheim's brilliant work. I recommend it to anyone wishing to enhance his or her understanding and appreciation of the piece.
Good value.......2007-01-05
Good condition, received fast. It's great, it's Sondheim, what else can I say?
Generous and Wonderful.......2005-08-31
Being one who always wanted to audition using the Witch's song or the Baker's Wife's song, I am delighted and grateful to Sondheim and Co. for putting out this amazing vocal score. The effort to do so must have been incredible. My only wish, not complaint, is that the chords were also represented by "C" or "Dmaj7" so that I could play along as I sing. I can read music, but if I have to play piano chords by sight only, it takes me days to finger it one note at a time. Well, that's probably my fault - practice, practice, practice! Anyway, it's quite a thorough job and now I have audition pieces galore! Only hope the accompanists can play it!
grrrrreat!.......2005-08-03
The musical score was in tip top shape and it came to my house in perfect timing for me to be able to use it for a local production. thank you.
Sure it's expensive, but you pay for what you get.......2004-01-08
This book is not for the intermediate pianist who wants to find some new music to play for the family at the family reunion. Not unless you've got a whole bunch of singers who want to join in...
This book contains ALL the music, compressed into one unit for the piano, and is the ultimate book for a piano accompanist- say in rehersal or such. Here lies the reason it costs so much: the market for this book is the amateur or even semi-professional theatre groups perfoming this show.
As this type of piano book, it's incredible. Every bit of music found in the musical is in the book, from underscoring to... well, you name it. And while it's fun to go through the book and learn the pieces, and say "hey, it sounds just like the recording!" it won't be much fun for anyone else to listen to unless you've got a singer (I'm learning to sing just so I can flush out my playing). Which, of course, is the whole point of the book.
Great music (Sondheim, of course), sounds great, and is perfect for accompanying a vocalist. Just make sure this is what you want.

BEST SONGS.......2007-10-04
Great buy!!
I am 80 years old. Haven't played the piano for 35 years. Have a electronic key board now and I'm having a "ball" getting these old standards back into my fingers. No! I not too good now; but, practace, practace and who knows?????

Just what I was looking for.......2007-09-06
This book is just the level I was looking for - not too hard and not too easy - since my level is what I call an intermediate beginner. The songs are great although traditional, not modern. My only complaints are that the book doesn't lie flat and I have to turn the pages during the songs. But, I am really enjoying this piano book.
Great buy.......2007-05-11
If you want to play like the pianist in a good restaurant, this is for you. The arrangements have a sophisticated sound without being terribly difficult. Most players need maybe five years of lessons/experience to handle them readily. And, usually the book lies flat on the music rack,
Simplicity itself........2007-03-13
This is a great book if your not a seasoned pianist. I hadn't played in years and was able to pick it up again in a few hours.
Best Songs Ever songbook.......2007-03-08
Love the songs in this book. Most are easy arrangements, a few require some practice for the leisure pianist. Definitely recommend it.

Great piano (guitar/vocal) songbook.......2006-10-31
Although the back cover states "Easy-to-play arrangements for piano, guitar and voice" this is not at all a beginners book.
Some songs are pretty easy, but overall the level is moderate to pretty advanced. There is quite a variety of "genre" as well I think. Some nice mellow almost ballad like songs, some bluesy tunes, some jazz, a little rock.
I will scan the back cover of the book and upload the image ( if I can ) so everyone can see what songs are included.

The Ultimate Guitar Chord Big Book is the absolute best, easy-to-use chord reference book. Every chord form youll every need is presented in simple, dictionary-style sequence. A Total Waste of Time and Money.......2007-01-17
This chord book is for music theorists and serious guitarists who have received formal training. I have been playing guitar for 35 years, including flamenco and rock guitar, and I am completely irritated at the mislabeling of this book - it actually dares to say "easy to use"!! I just wanted buy a regular, everyday chord book, one where you could actually go find the "A" chord on a page in some logical and normal way and it would show a normal array of variations (please pardon me for living). Instead this displays a confusing listing, such as Major 6 - 3rd in bass (1st inversion). Just what is that supposed to mean to an everyday guitar player and why doesn't the sales pitch explalin how different this is? I am returning this book immediately.
The Ultimate Guitar Chord Big Book.......2007-01-05
I found this book extremely difficult to find chords quickly. I guess it is for guitar players more advanced than me, but I think it is not very user friendly for players at my huble level.
Going Back..........2006-12-31
This book has a lot of information, but not for a beginner. The chords are not labeled for someone with not much experience in chord reading to understand.
5 STARS: In agreement with last 2 reviews!!!!!.......2005-12-06
I don't understand how anyone could have giving this book a 1 star rating! I hope anybody reading these reviews will take this and the last 2 reviews to heart, and overlook the first one.
In Don Latarski's and Aaron Stang's "Big Book" we find a thorough and extensive example of every possible chord voicing, everywhere on the fretboard. This book is a jazz players dream come true! If you just want a quick reference to basic chords, you don't want this book. However, if you want to disect each chord and extension that you already know, this will be a priceless tool to use with your studies. It is worth 5 times the MSRP! Thank you Don and Aaron for doing the research for us!

Great for intermediate to advanced jazz guitarists.......2003-02-22
I'd have to agree with the review from Connecticut. This is the last chord book an intermediate or advanced guitarist will ever need, especially if he's taking the leap from rock to R&B or jazz, where tab is neither common nor kosher.
When I first started playing rock guitar, I needed only a page of guitar chords. With just the dom, min, and 7's, I could play almost any song. But a few years ago I decided to crossover to R&B and jazz, so obviously my gig bag needed more chords. Prospective band leaders would hand me a "fake sheet" with no tab, only musical notes and the occassional Bbmin7 written above a measure. How was I to make the jump? I looked at a bunch of poor chord books before buying this one. Now, a year later, I'm gigging with guys who played in college jazz bands. How did I make the jump?
I picked up the Ultimate Guitar Chord Book and started experimenting. Now if I'm see Bbmin7(b5), I'm not going to panic. Get out the book! Which "common" voicing is between the prior and next chords? I find it and write my own tab above the measure on the jazz "fake sheet". So far, I've learned to play classic jazz, bop and cool jazz this way.
I'd recommend this book highly to anyone who doesn't read notation for guitar, yet wants to play R&B or jazz standards. This book is the bridge to take you there!
Book Description
Merenguethe quintessential Dominican dance musichas a long and complex history, both on the island and in the large immigrant community in New York City. In this ambitious work, Paul Austerlitz unravels the African and Iberian roots of merengue and traces its growth under dictator Rafael Trujillo and its renewed popularity as an international music.
Using extensive interviews as well as written commentaries, Austerlitz examines the historical and contemporary contexts in which merengue is performed and danced, its symbolic significance, its social functions, and its musical and choreographic structures. He tells the tale of merengue's political functions, and of its class and racial significance. He not only explores the various ethnic origins of this Ibero-African art form, but points out how some Dominicans have tried to deny its African roots.
In today's global society, mass culture often marks ethnic identity. Found throughout Dominican society, both at home and abroad, merengue is the prime marker of Dominican identity. By telling the story of this dance music, the author captures the meaning of mass and folk expression in contemporary ethnicity as well as the relationship between regional, national, and migrant culture and between rural/regional and urban/mass culture. Austerlitz also traces the impact of migration and global culture on the native music, itself already a vibrant intermixture of home-grown merengue forms.
From rural folk idiom to transnational mass music, merengue has had a long and colorful career. Its well-deserved popularity will make this book a must read for anyone interested in contemporary music; its complex history will make the book equally indispensable to anyone interested in cultural studies.

AY COMPAY! DON'T MISS THIS!.......2001-04-26
Up in Manhattan's Morningside Heights and its Dominican analogs all over the US, salsa is edged out by the magnificently manic beat of the merengue, whether stirred into Dominican rap and house (the most original as well as the least known versions of the genre) or in the tear-em-down accordion of Fefita La Grande. Austerlitz has all this and a lot more, all the way from the luckless Toma' back in the 1840s (read the book!)Austerlitz covers merengue from rural to hi-society in all its fierce joviality. Read this book and you'll know there's one good thing Trujillo did for the Dominican Republic!
John Storm Roberts
An Important Addition to the Library of Any Merengue Fan.......2000-04-25
If you are looking for a quick yet thorough coverage of this topic then this is the book for you. It is a relatively short book, coming in at 167 pages (not including bibliography but including notes section), yet it covers the whole spectrum of the national music of the Dominican Republic.
Mr Austerlitz covers the beginnings of this music all the way through to its current state. It also spends time on Merengue's development during the Trujillo era (a particularly interesting topic to anyone who studies the Dominican Republic).
Mr Austerlitz also does a good job of addressing the sociological issues that arise from music and manages to blend well the merengue of the campo with that of the salon.
A good read and it even comes with a CD with some very good campo (country) merengue. If you are looking for merengue at its roots then this CD should please you.

Complicated Chord Structure.......2007-09-27
This book had a nice selection of songs, but our problem is that the guitar tabs are far from easy. The chords themselves are fine, but the book has you doing way too many changes for a beginner. They'll have you playing a different chord every couple bars, and I'm pretty sure you could play the same songs with fewer chord changes.

Entertaining Music book.......2007-09-06
As a piano teacher, I find this a great book for elementary school
children playing at a level 1 or 2. The chords are written above
each grand staff so the students have options on playing the music.
It is great to have music that the children are excited about playing.

Book Description
If Broadway's triumphant musical hits are exhilarating, the backstage tales of Broadway failures are tantalizing soap operas in miniature. Second Act Trouble puts you with the creators in the rehearsal halls, at out-of-town tryouts, in late-night, hotel-room production meetings, and at after-the-fact recriminatory gripe fests. Suskin has compiled and annotated long-forgotten, first-person accounts of 25 Broadway musicals that stubbornly went awry. Contributions come from such respected writers as Patricia Bosworth, Mel Gussow, Lehman Engel, William Gibson, Lewis H. Lapham, and John Gruen. No mere vanity productions, these; you can't have a big blockbuster of failure, it seems, without the participation of Broadway's biggest talents. Caught in the stranglehold of tryout turmoil are Richard Rodgers, Jule Styne, Jerry Herman, Cy Coleman, Charles Strouse, John Kander, Mel Brooks, and even Edward Albee. The infamous shows featured include Mack and Mabel; Breakfast at Tiffany's; The Act; Dude; Golden Boy; Hellzapoppin'; Nick and Nora; Seesaw; Kelly; and How Now, Dow Jones.
Customer Reviews:
Doomed.......2007-07-16
I couldn't put it down and if this book had just collected only Lewis Lapham's long, long, "new journalism" article on the disastrous Moose Charnap flop KELLY! it would be worth buying. Lapham spares nobody and takes no prisoners and he got everyone to go on record about Ella Logan who must have been a termagant beyond compare. The producers let her go because they couldn't stand her continual "vulgarity" of all things. Kindly old Mel Brooks comes in, takes a look at her, and says, "Fire her." Sadly she had once been a great Broadway star, the original Sharon in FINIAN'S RAINBOW, now reduced to playing mothers (in 1965). Wonder if she's still with us, Suskin might have played fair and allowed us to air her grievances against the horrid KELLY! people. Oh well, SECOND ACT TROUBLE garners one great story after another, and I can't really say which one I like the best. Great monsters always make fantastic reading, and Jerry Lewis in HELLZAPOPPIN is right up there with Hitler and Stalin! There's one part where--he hates Lynn Redgrave--he has to rehearse a song with her, and he refuses to stand up while she's onstage with him so she's forced to sing while he sings with her lying flat on his back on the ground. Oh my, but after a few more chapters of this sort of behavior you begin to feel that being evil is necessary to make it on Broadway, and the squeaky wheels make the most noise.
Steven Suskin has an elastic sense of what shows are hits and which are flops, and some of the shows he covers in this book I was surprised to see he called flops. Some were critical darlings, some were pure spectacle, and some notorious flops like CARRIE aren't covered here. There are many occasions to wonder. Would HALLELUJAH BABY have been a hit if Lena Horne had played in it? I don't think so. Could Jerry Orbach have saved MACK AND MABEL? Who knows at this late date. Could Liv Ullmann be as horrid and egotistical as she is painted here, on the payroll of I REMEMBER MAMA? There goes another illusion shattered.
The book reveals that during the out of town tryouts for KWAMINA Star Sally Ann Howes had an affair with her co-star, and that this behavior was nothing new for Sally Ann for she had previously (a few months before) cheated on her husband, songwriter Richard Adler) with German heartthrob Maxmilian Schell backstage on the sets of a John Frankenheimer telefilm. I didn't even know who Sally Ann Howes is and I'm still enthralled! Adler eventually comes to forgive Howes in the long decades since, and she seems like an admirable woman in many ways, leaving her home to come back to NY and nurse Adler's son in the final months of his tragic illness. Good for you, Sally Ann, I like a woman who goes after what she wants, why, that's what made me a musical queen to begin with.
Trouble with 2nd Act trouble.......2007-07-03
I was extremely disapointed with this book, having read most of the essays contained therein from other sources.
why can't i keep the title in my head!?.......2007-05-23
i read this book and after i finished it, i felt i had enjoyed it. but when i went to purchase it, i couldn't remember the name of it.
then, i was asked by more than a few people for a recommendation of a good book. and i would describe this one but not be able to catch the name for the life of me. and i wondered if it was me, or the title.
well, part of it is the title. it explains what the book is about but doesn't capture the humor of its subject matter or the acerbic prose used by suskin.
and then of course, is that snappy, light, humorous tone. it's fine for a start but then, i didn't stay invited in the book. i read it quickly because i wanted to see the other musicals for this perspective. but then i realized i can't tell you very much about the shows.
and after a moment or two, i can't even tell you any insightful line that suskin wrote about the shows. just that tone--light-hearted, well-researched but not probing or enlightening.
Interesting book about Broadway.......2007-04-11
I haven't read much of the book yet as it just arrived and I have other books to read first. But it looks very interesting to someone interested in theatre. The author seems to have done a very good job
Very disappointing.......2006-10-06
Compared to the wit and flair I had expected, I found this volume boring and dull. It is largely a compilation (with Suskin providing brief notes) of theatrical reviews. Approach this with care if, as I did, you searched on a star's name and found a mention in this book - it may be only one line.
I had expected great humour, inside knowledge, entertaining stories of the backstage. Frankly, I wish I had kept the receipt - I would have returned it the next day.
