3 out of 5 stars Good, but not for the feint of heart..........2007-08-17

I agree this book contains a great depth of country styles and method. The CD is the poorest aspect of the package. He plays so fast that unless you are already reasonably accomplished, forget it. Also, the CD organization is extremely poor if you need to find and repeat tracks numerous times to get what he just blazed out. I spent a day or two with it and then put it up for a while until I catch up with it. If someone was standing there offering my money back - I'd take it. However, if you are an advanced guitarist looking to learn this style, this may be perfect for you.

5 out of 5 stars Everything You Need.......2005-06-10

I've gone through all the various country instruction books and none has been as thorough and useful as this one. It is geared towards guitarists who already have an above average amount of experience but the material is presented in such a clear and precise way that it all makes sense after a bit of practice. As always, there are some real flash moves that only work in a very few situations, but the vast majority of what the author presents will work on every gig you play. All the various styles, and standard licks are here. This book has everything you need to become well-versed in country guitar.

4 out of 5 stars Good job Lee.......2001-08-15

This book is more geared toward the intermediate to advanced player. It really helps if you know how to count rythmes and triplets to break down the written tab. Although it's always helpfull to hear the music being played, I did not think the CD was all the much benefit. As usual, it's much easier to learn this stuff slow and work it up to speed. The author is a very fast picker and I found it hard to us the CD because he plays so fast. If you do not want to play with pick and hybrid fingers or finger picks, forget this book, most of the examples require this technique to get it to sound correct. I generally like the book, it's a good resource for stealing licks. The section on using 3rd's and 6th intervals is great for country twang. The book that has been most benefit towards my country prowess has been Albert Lee's Adavance Country Guitar. I believe this book will come in number two. If only Brent Mason would decide to write a book and focus on his country style, wow.

5 out of 5 stars This book has it all.......2000-12-23

Finding material on instruction for playing country guitar is very difficult because there is just not much out there. This book is like finding a needle in a hay stack. This book runs the gamut on almost every aspect of playing country guitar. It starts you out on some simple little licks that get you sounding like a country picker right off the bat. For someone new to playing country music, you must learn how to pick [base] strings in an alternating fashion with your thumb or flat pick and pick with your middle and ring finger (also called hybrid picking). It takes some practice but that's just country. Take your time and you'll get it. Once you learn hybrid picking you'll never go back to just flat picking only - it's like a hole new world, even if you're not playing country music. Have a finger-lickn'-chickn'-pickn' great time! Keep it country!

Hot Country by Lee Hodgson

Given the lack of material on this subject as compered to rock and blues, this book is a must. Each chapter is dedicated to a technique or style like the CAGED scale system or Chicken Picking and Pick Harmonics. The book contains an incredible amount of material most of which is demonstrated on the CD, although the book does follow the standard easy stuff at the front hard stuff at the back format, this is strictly not the case and it seems to jump from easy techniques to incredibly advanced techniques at the turn of a page which can be a bit off putting. But it's all here if you are prepared to work at it especially if your idea of a Hot Country Guitarist is Albert Lee or Bert Mason. Beginners may find the book a bit advanced and out of their depth but I'd advise getting it anyway.

    Product Description

This book/CD set features 25 twangy intermediate-to-advanced solos in the classic honky tonk style. If you love the sound of a twangy Telecaster guitar, you will enjoy learning the solos in this book. It is the best classic country solos book available! This is an intermediate to advanced book for players having basic skills. However, a brave and ambitious beginner might be able to tackle the slower solos. The solos contain many great LICKS and IDEAS that can be used by a creative onstage country guitarist. All solos are written in TAB and standard notation, and recorded on the companion CD. Few styles of music have enjoyed the widespread and enduring popularity of country music. Through the years, country music has developed from the rural Southern string band sound to the raw honky-tonk of the postwar period, the Nashville pop sounds of the late 50s and 60s, and finally the overly slick commercial sound of today. The solos in this book sound like the breaks one might hear on classic recordings by Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Lefty Frizell, George Jones, and similar artists who defined the exciting honky-tonk sound of the 50s to late 60sbefore rampant commercialism eliminated virtually all originality and feeling from popular country guitar solos. Several hundred popular country recordings were researched to come up with the 25 chord progressions in this book. Each progression was found to be common to several popular songs. A solo incorporating various concepts and techniques was composed to each progression. The result is an authentic sounding collection of country guitar solos through which various ideas can be analyzed.

5 out of 5 stars Truth in its Title.......2006-08-03

This book does exactly what its title says. I like the way it uses nine different instructors to teach different techniques. It does not waste space with guitar playing basics and starts right off with a full explanation of strum and bass note patterns. This is much more than the usual boom-chucka stuff I find in many books. It gives three pages of varied, and increasingly challenging, examples. After several weeks, I still go back to these pages to practice.

The accompanying CD is fun to listen to these experts playing. Fortunately, they were smart enough to play each example at a slower pace so you can actually hear and learn how to do it yourself. I find tremendous value by accompanying them in addition to doing it myself.

I have learned more and enjoyed my guitar more than any other book.

4 out of 5 stars Covers a range of skills well.......2003-09-20

The first few chapters of this book are very much at the beginner level. The Lester Flatt G run chapter felt like it was trying to pad a simple riff into a chapter. And the "boom-chick" rhythm chapters were a little bit repetative.

But then we get into the real meat of the book with fiddle contest accompaniment and all the chapters past that. This is where we seem some real insigt. There are some very nice chord substitution lessons. If you ever got sick and tired of playing thesame G and D chords over Salley Goodin (Or A and E7 since the version in the book is in the key of A) then you'll be happy to learn some very nice new chord sequences from that chapter. There's also some very nice Irish backup ideas.

Then we move into the flatpicking melody section. The fiddle tunes and cross-picking chapters in particular are quite good. At this point you're moving into intermediate to slightly advanced level techniques so be prepared to spend some practice time.

Normally, I can run through one of these String Letter "Essentials" books in a weekend. But this one has a bit more deapth than some of their other offerings. If you play acoustic guitar of any style, even if you're not a bluegras fan, I think you'll find something worth while in here.

4 out of 5 stars Flatpicking Guitar Essentials.......2000-12-21

This book is put out in association with the people at Acoustic Guitar magazine. It was this fact that led me to look at this book. The lessons are clear and easy to follow which makes it good for beginning guitar players and intermediate players also. The CD that is included with the book is very helpful. Without it the book would not be nearly as helpful. There are several styles covered in the books 89 pages. Some styles easier to pickup than others. Overall this is a good book that will help you learn flatpicking technique.

4 out of 5 stars Better than some DVD.......2007-05-17

I am giving this 4-stars cause 5 would be perfect. I am a hobby guitarist and do not get to play much anymore. I am from the classic rock era and am trying to add some country knowledge to my playing. Although DVDs are the rage in this day and age I found this book to be quite helpful for getting a feel for what some of the country greats are doing in their solo's and the choice of solo's was enjoyable. I liked the way Todd plays each solo fast, slow, and then discusses playing technics for each one. This may not be of benefit if you are a Twang Tele expert already. For beginning and intermediate players each of these solos at recorded tempo is a challenge. I really like this book!

5 out of 5 stars Rhythmless transcription but otherwise superb.......2006-05-10

I agree with foxxymoron.net that you are paying for the transcription work and CD only. The first thing that caught my attention was the fact that there is no rhythm notated. All you get is handwritten numbers on pre-printed tab paper. Fret numbers, slides, bends, pre-bends, hammer-ons and offs and releases are pretty much the only notation in the book. The plastic comb binding is average but the pages stay open easily. The cover is just thick non-glossy paper so the book itself has a "homemade with a color printer" look to it.

All that being said up front.... I LOVE this book and CD. It is not for beginners although I suppose if you're tackling these solos, you've been playing a while. Todd plays each solo at full speed (no metranome), s l o w speed (with metranome) and then walks you step by step through each note/phrase. He also throws in insightful commentary and mentions techniques in the solos that have also used by other players. The CD is an hour and 13 minutes long and Todd's voice and guitar are recorded well. The transcriptions (so far) have been dead on.

Anyone interested in learning these solos should really check out this book. It spells them out in a very clear fashion. The price is what you would pay for a half hour lesson at any music store and this will keep you busy much longer than that! I was going to give it 4 stars for lack of notation but the CD is so clear that I'm giving it 5 :-)

5 out of 5 stars Your search is over!.......2007-01-13

Without going into a lot of detail...this is THE guitar chord book. Loaded with chords, explanations, fretting pictures, styles.

...if you looking for a thorough chord listing, this is definately it!

4 out of 5 stars Great book for visual learning types. Good tips for chord usage too........2006-07-29

I picked this book after looking through several at the bookstore. What I liked about it was that it had lots of chords and it gave you some of the "logic" behind the chord and why/where you might use them. Most other books just have lots of chord pictures laid out on the page which I did not find helpful.

Also this book shows an actual photo of a hand playing the chord which I liked. The book's tablature (chord pictures) shows which note is the root in the chord which I also liked.

Another cool thing is that the book is spiral bound so that it will lay open flat. This is really helpful when you're actually playing your guitar chords and not holding the book.

So while this book doesn't have 1000's of chords like some do (it doesn't get into a lot of "fancy" chords--suspended, 11ths, 13ths, etc) it does give you 500 of the most useful ones. I also like the appendixes that have more blues, jazz, rock chords.

It's a good book all in all.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Money.......2007-03-06

This book is total garbage. Do yourself a favor and spend the money on Steve Kaufman's parking lot picker series. If you want to learn some basic bluegrass rhythm I guess this book is ok, but if you want to learn to flatpick this book is nigh worthless. I've been working through parking lot picker 1 for the last several months and the improvement in my speed and technique has been tremendous. This book, on the other hand, I spent about an hour with and got essentially nothing out of. The cherry on top of the book's worthlessness is having to listen to Russ Barenberg's putrid singing voice.

1 out of 5 stars Too Much Sheet Music, Too Little Teaching.......2006-08-03

The first 15 pages are nothing more than you get in thousands of other books and free on many internet sites. The rest of the book is songs in tabulature. I expected the book to teach me how to play the songs. And, when I try to play the songs, I find the small print tabulature very hard to read.

5 out of 5 stars Good book with good CD........2006-06-26

This book is great for learning to flatpick bluegrass music. I prefer some of the arrangements to those in Happy Traum's book, and the inclusion of 2 versions of each song on the CD make this great for those with less Bluegrass familiarity.

        2 out of 5 stars Tablature only.......2006-02-05

Coming from a classical music background, it'll take me extra hours /days to learn to read the tablature and finding the right sounding note on the fretboard. Because of this, the usefulness of this book decreses, and therefore I prefer "Bluegrass Guitar" by Happy Traum, which has not only tablature but also staff with streble cleff side by side. Traum's book is also twice the music material than Barenberg's book and sells about the same price.

5 out of 5 stars This is my favorite bluegrass tutorial w/ CD.......2005-11-17

For guitarists wanting to learn bluegrass, I recommend, "Teach Yourself Bluegrass Guitar" by Russ Barenburg. It contains many bluegrass classics and all of them are included on its CD. Each song is played twice, once with lead guitar and once with rhythm only for practicing. (Which is a nice feature because most instructional CDs want you to use the balance control to isolate the rhythm part, but most "boom-boxes" these days don't have that control anymore.) While none of the songs are played really slowly for beginners, Russ isn't burning up the strings either. The songs are played at a moderate performance pace - suitable for learning. The music on this CD is so good that I often listen to it in my car just for fun.

5 out of 5 stars Some awesome guitarists.......2004-04-16

This is a quality, well-done play-along book with some of the best country guitarists there are. It has solos by Albert Lee, Jerry Donahue, Steve Travato and others. Another great quality this book has is the wide range of styles it features. It has everything from fast playing to myriads of bends to slide guitar.

Sometimes I just listen to the CD...the stuff is that good. It has enough material to keep you busy for years. I don't know if I would recommend it for beginners, much of the stuff is pretty advanced...but don't let that stop you.

5 out of 5 stars An EXCELLENT way to learn Country Bass.......2007-07-07

This book is an excellent resource for learning Country Bass. I was looking for ways to learn more authentic country basslines, and this book/CD was enormously helpful!! A big plus about the CD is the ability to play along with a real band. I am looking forward to trying out Keith Rosier's other book: Jump n' Blues Bass.
