Book Description

Recorded during the blazing summer of 1971 at Villa Nellcote, Keith Richards' seaside mansion in the south of France, Exile on Main St. has been hailed as one of the Rolling Stones' best albums--and one of the greatest rock records of all time. Yet its improbable creation was difficult, torturous...and at times nothing short of dangerous.

In self-imposed exile, the Stones--along with wives, girlfriends, and a crew of hangers-on unrivaled in the history of rock--spent their days smoking, snorting, and drinking whatever they could get their hands on. At night, the band descended like miners into the villa's dank basement to lay down tracks. Out of those grueling sessions came the familiar riffs and rhythms of "Rocks Off," "Tumbling Dice," "Happy," and "Sweet Virginia."

All the while, a variety of celebrities--John Lennon, Yoko Ono, and Gram Parsons among them--stumbled through the villa's neverending party, as did the local drug dealers, known to one and all as "les cowboys." Villa Nellcote became the crucible in which creative strife, outsize egos, and all the usual byproducts of the Stones' legendary hedonistic excess fused into something potent, volatile, and enduring.

Here, for the first time, is the season in hell that produced Exile on Main St.

1 out of 5 stars Another "Music" book which skips the "music" .......2007-09-10

I just finished this book. It is similar to the recent one on Derek and the Dominoes. All kinds of tabloid info on drugs, women and other debauchery but extremely short on the music. There are also glaring mistakes: 1. the author claims Jumpin' Jack Flash was on the Sticky Fingers album (wrong - it was a single released two years earlier). 2. he claims that Mick Taylor replaced Clapton in the Bluesbreakers (wrong, Taylor replaced Peter Green). 3. He claims the song "Dandelion" was on the album Satanic Majesty's Request. False. This is basic information and there is no excuse for getting it wrong. Not an auspicious beginning to the book. At the end of the book a few pages are thrown in discussing the music (which he claims are for (paraphrase - not exact words) eccentric people who like all this music stuff - I guess he means those of us who are not interested in tabloid gossip). If you're interested in what drugs Mick and Keith were taking or how many people Anita Pallenberg slept with, get this book. If you're interested in music, however, consider looking elsewhere. This book is a big disappointment. It is akin to a teen going out on a date waiting to kiss the girl good night and at the end she just says "see 'ya" and leaves you on the street. Not at all recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Not Much About the Record Itself.......2007-08-02

I picked this up while waiting for a plane to Philly. As a musician, I was pleased to find a book that (I thought) was about the making of one of my favorite recordings. This is a fast read. It's really just about the debauchery that took place while the record was being made and readied for market. Those of us who were old enough to remember this period of music history will learn absolutely nothing new here. I like the earlier review with the sarcastic proclamation "oh my God! Keith Richards took drugs!" That about sums it up. There's really very little (maybe a couple of sentences) about the actual sessions. I don't recommend it. I left it in the hotel room in Philly.

1 out of 5 stars don't bother reading/buying.......2007-07-06

Read 'Terry (Milwaukee)''s comments first. Dead-on analysis of this book; poorly written and often distracting - somewhere between a sophmore book report and a gossip column. Oddly organized and consistently annoying with the "music lyric seques"... it was a frustrating chore to read this book.

One thing I never figured out - was the author even at Nellcote (Cote d'azur in France)? I was never able to determine what, if any, relationship he actually had to the Rolling Stones...

2 out of 5 stars Exiled! Get the Janovitz book instead........2007-06-26

I just finished reading this and the whole time I was making notes about the problems -- the factual errors, the reliance on Sanchez's shady material, the bad wordplay and the author's irritating use of the present tense.

But then I came to this page and realized that the book has already been slammed again and again for those very same reasons.

So, my short review: Word.

Slightly longer review: Greenfield's usually pretty good (regarding his book on Bill Graham I have to drop the music geek cliche: "seminal") but this book is a bust. Without referencing the music this book loses all context and it could almost be about any band, any party. Still, if you want dirt, dirt you get.

** A much better recent book is Bill Janovitz's book about "Exile" in the 33-1/3rd series. **

Janovitz (who led the band Buffalo Tom and writes extensively for AMG) covers the music with a musician's expertise without getting boring, and he brings to the table the genuine enthusiasm of a Stones fan. Plus, it's cheaper and cool and hip-pocket sized without being too small.

2 out of 5 stars quick read, but still not worth the time.......2007-05-02

I was at the library and stumbled on this book, Exile on Main Street, a Season in Hell with the Rolling Stones by Robert Greenfield, so I grabbed it.Really quick read, so I finished it, but it was pretty weak!

The book is about the summer in the France when the Stones recorded most of Exile on Main Street, in '71.
Basically, the gist of the story is that, over 35 years ago, the Stones hung out, did a lot of drugs, slept with alot of people, and often weren't very nice to each other, or to other people. Oh, and Keith was a heroin addict. And...there were a bunch of other people hanging around. Wow, what a ground breaking account. Oh, no, wait, everyone already knew all that.

The author professes himself some sort of expert, and spends a good chunk of this lighweight book tearing down other people who've written about the Stones, even going so far as to suggest one person "call his (Greenfield's) office" with any questions on the Stones.
Then, a page later, he says Jumpin Jack Flash is on Sticky Fingers.

Of course, it's not.

He seems to particularly have it in for "Spanish" Tony Sanchez, who years ago wrote a tell-all book on the Stones. It's funny how much time he devotes to tearing down Sanchez and trying to discredit much of what he wrote, when it seems Sanchez's book was the primary source of info for this book.

It seemed about 3 out of 4 accounts/stories in Greenfield's book begin with "According to Tony Sanchez..". Then the 4th story would begin the same way, but Greenfield would claim the story inaccurate and would provide pretty much the same one interview John Perry didwith Anita Pallenberg, for his book on Exile, to discredit it.

Greenfield never says he was there that summer, or gives any indication to make the reader think he was there, from reading this book you wouldn't know if he was or not. He seems to just be recounting stories told by other people. He devotes alot of energy to tearing down people who there there hanging around partying who didn't have a "job to do" or reason to be there. Was he there? And if so why? Did he have a "job to do"? Or did he just collect stories to throw into a sloppy, poorly written book 35+ years later?

The book is pretty poorly written and the tone is often annoying.

Quick read but still a waste of what little time it will take you to read it. There are definately better books on the Stones out there.

Book Description

Tracing the creation of Exile on Main St. from the original songwriting done while touring America through the final editing in Los Angeles, Bill Janovitz explains how an album recorded by a British band in a villa on the French Riviera is pure American rock & roll. Looking at each song individually, Janovitz unveils the innovative recording techniques, personal struggles, and rock & roll mythmaking that culminated in this pivotal album.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good; I only wish it were longer.......2007-07-14

The problem with writing about "Exile" is that it's such a rich and storied period in the Stones' career that writers often down know where to start, or what tone to take once they get going.

There's more than enough music to focus on, but there's also a boatload of drug-related illicitness that could be dealt with.

Janovitz (who plays in the band Buffalo Tom and writes extensively for AMG) covers the music with a musician's expertise without getting boring, and he brings to the table the genuine enthusiasm of a Stones fan.

He writes about what the album meant to him -- and, if you're a huge fan of the record, you'll probably be able to relate to his brief tales of youth. But then he digs into the work with the enthusiasm of a musician who's breaking down songs he loves: Did Keith play electric piano on that song? Or is it Nicky Hopkins? How has the group's approach to gospel evolved in relation to earlier attempts? Who are the background vocalists on a particular song? Discuss the unusual mixing and the circumstances under which the recording was made.

Another reviewer said there's too much Janovitz here, which I don't really understand because while he has asides and a distinct, conversational voice to his writing, I think it makes this book go down a lot easier than, say, Robert Greenfield's recent hipper-than-thou present-tense misfire, "A Season in Hell with the Rolling Stones."

Plus, it's cheaper and cool and hip-pocket sized without being too small. Although I do think it may be too short.

4 out of 5 stars A good read!.......2007-03-23

I enjoy the CD even more after reading this book. The only better read you could get is from someone who was actually there during the making of the album.

This book is mostly about the writer himself.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on Exile yet.......2007-01-20

Just finished Janovitz's Exile book and I was really impressed with his style. He provides a detailed account of the characters, setting and circumstances surrounding the recording of "Exile on Main Street". I collect books on the Stones and this easily goes into my top three due to the details of why Exile was such a breakthrough for the Stones as artists. I loved the fact that Janovitz breaks down the tracking on Exile song by song. He provides a lot of insight of the sounds and meanings behind every song. I know this record by heart but he knocked it out of the park pointing out things I hadn't considered before such as the importance of Jimmy Miller's percussion influence or Nicky Hopkin's contribution vs. Ian Stewart's on Exile.

I LOVED it. I give it 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars Good Read.......2005-11-19

Very detailed and well-written account of the greatest rock and roll album ever made. To be honest, I would've preferred a few hundred more pages about Exile, but Janovitz crams a lot into this little book. Worth multiple readings if you're a big fan of the album.

5 out of 5 stars Book shines light on dark under Stones.......2005-07-27

I've read quite a few books on the Stones and know that this book is very close to what really happened. Anybody growing up in a rock and roll environment knows that the only way to get the true story is from the participants that were the receivers of the most active part of the action in this case Mick Jagger. The book is written from the perspectives of the people that Jagger has personally impacted such as relatives, roadies, lovers and chums in amazing detail!

Most Stones fan would dismiss the book because Jagger's their hero and who wants to hear bad about their role model? The proof is in the evidence. A bunch of kids, an ex thrown to the wayside to fend for herself and Jagger's kid on social security, the words to the songs, the drug convictions, the years on Jagger and Richards and the sociology of the time periods. I personally know that much of this book is reality. How else would the author get the details that they did that are spot on knowledge of lifelong Stone devotees? It's the culture. Mick Jagger did not become an icon of the pop culture by just singing in a rock and roll band. He had to be a social aberrant to be the international, multi-dimensional classic icon that he is. And yes, Madonna was a Stones groupie and very obnoxious (still is) and a third tier Alvin Ailey dancer: one step past a primadonna.

Some of the comments below are pretty funny grasps at trying to discredit the book; wrong picture, poorly written, typos? Yes there's some of this going on, but it's the job of the publisher to clear these things up. The author gets the ideas down as well as they can and the publisher does the rest, it's the way the publishing business works, typos and all. Maybe the publisher was aware of the liability issues associated with this book and probably just wanted to get it out as quickly as possible. My advice is to do a google search on the author and see how powerful this guy is. A former contributing editor of Time and senior editor of People, also written hundreds of articles for a wide range of publications, including Life and the New York Times. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm?

I've followed the Stones very closely from the beginning and know quite a bit about them behind the scenes through people that have worked with them. I highly recommend this book!!!!!!! It's a very significant work that is a must read. Those of you growing up with Stones and a part of their culture will know. GET IT!

3 out of 5 stars Okay Book With Proofreading & Fact-Checking Errors.......2003-05-29

The one thing that harms the credibility of this book is poor proofreading and fact-checking. It should have been more thoroughly vetted before publication. That said, it's not a bad book. Anderson is a credible journalist with some good sources, including John Dunbar (ex-husband of Jagger girlfriend Marianne Faithfull, and friend to both the Beatles and Stones), Chrissie Shrimpton (Jagger's girlfriend prior to Marianne), and Bebe Buell (Jagger girlfriend in the '70s). Anderson does a decent job of telling the Stones history. It gets really wild in the '70s, when Mick gets into the lifestyle of that period, including drugs and bisexuality. The book makes a case that Mick not only has had gay experiences, but fairly serious gay relationships with fellow musicians, including members of the Rolling Stones. Perhaps it can be discounted as tabloid trash, but one only needs to listen to Stones songs and read the lyrics to realize that Jagger actually does have a fair number of male-to-male relationship referencing songs to his credit. So, it's perhaps arguable that if Anderson's allegations are true, it directly impacted the Stones' art. Unfortunately, Anderson doesn't even get into that aspect, which would have made his book more credible and interesting. But what do you expect from something that calls itself "Jagger: Unauthorized"? With the facts at hand, some very seedy and objectionable, the book could have been much more. At times, it reads like Kitty Kelley's biography of Frank Sinatra. The Jagger revealed here has a similar temperament and egotism of Sinatra. The Stones even used the Hell's Angels in a similar way at times as Sinatra used the Mob (only Frank's Mob connections never directly led to anyone being killed, unlike the Angels killing someone at Altamont). The end result of the book is that Mick Jagger seems to be both an objectionable and pathetic person, in spite of his talent and success. Nonetheless, it's highly entertaining to read about this mixture of talent and excess.

1 out of 5 stars POO-POO!.......2002-08-05

All tabloid garbage. This is the one Mick tried to stop publication. Alot of Anderson's claims are seriously waaay out there! Mick bit off a piece of his tongue in a high school basketball game forever changing his voice? Before becoming famous pop-singer Madonna was a Stones groupie?? As a teenager Mick lost his virginity to a sexy hospital nurse?? Anderson's 'source notes' do not provide specific substantiation to any of his claims. Even the baby photo of Mick is really a baby photo of Charlie!! Now i seriously doubt he would be able to get his text right if he can't even get a photo right?!! Come on now!

1 out of 5 stars Jagger Unauthorized is a waste of time.......2001-05-20

I was hoping to read an interesting book on Mick Jagger's life. I picked this piece of thrash up at the library. It is horribly written. I don't believe any editing was done on the book. In one passage, Anderson mistakenly writes "himself" in reference to Jagger's lover, Marianne Faithful. I'm glad I borrowed this from the public library. I wouldn't spend a dime on this book.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad...not good........2000-01-09

Christopher Anderson's book on Jagger is strange. On one hand, Anderson seems to have stolen much of his material from other sources. Oh sure, he gives them all the appropriate credits, but it's still a letdown. Anderson never actually interviewd Jagger for this book. On the other hand, Anderson has some good stuff in here. It's Jagger at his sleaziest, but that can be entertaining. And Anderson does uncover some witnesses to Jagger's life that do provide original material for the book. The book attempts to portray Jagger as scandalous and selfish, which he indeed appears to be. There are plenty of books written on Mick Jagger that are better than this, and plenty that are worse.

Book Description

Mick Jagger remains to this day the only rock star to straddle contrary lifestyles - musician, sex-symbol, actor, father, husband, and rebel - and retain credibility in each. In this eye-opening biography, Chris Sandford draws on his own conversations with Jagger, exclusive comments from Jagger's parents, school friends and the three original members of his original group and the frank, sometimes disturbing recollections of his former manager, Tom Keylock. Among the book's revelations are fresh insights into Jagger's turbulent relationships with band members, and new details of Jagger's celebrity affairs with Brigitte Bardot and Tina Turner, as well as his long relationships with Marianne Faithfull, Bianca, and Jerry Hall.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best Jagger Biography so far.......2005-01-16

This is the only book by Christopher Sandford I've read, but I must say he's done a good job. Funnily enough, when you read this book you realise that Jagger's approach to life is actually a conservative one. Had he not taken such a firm grip on the band's affairs as he did from 1969 on the Stones would have most probably disbanded.

1 out of 5 stars Flat and uneventful.......2004-04-21

The life of a Rolling Stone is not a dull one, but David Seay makes it seem that way in "Mick Jagger: The Story Behind The Rolling Stone." Don't expect the story behind the Rolling Stone, though -- Seay's book lacks any new information or insights. It's all been done before, and less annoyingly.

It charts Mick Jagger's early life as a rambunctious, relatively ordinary little kid, to a teen music enthusiast and then to a budding pop star. His bizarre sex appeal made him a universal sensation, and his work with fellow Rolling Stone Keith Richards made him a musical one. Not to mention (of course) a string of high-profile girlfriends and wives that included models, socialites and singers.

Seay writes about Jagger with the sort of gooey compliments lavished on media favorites. Here, Jagger can do no wrong, or at least not much of it. His tumultuous love life (involving both sexes, Seay constantly reminds us) dominates this book. He slept with this person! He had a fling with that person! It pretty much makes up the entire book, as Seay spends little time focusing on the creative side of the Stones.

Despite claiming to be "the story behind the Rolling Stone," there really is nothing new about Jagger in this book. Seay just lists the same fights, concerts, and interview snippets, while adding nothing to them. Jagger remains enigmatic throughout the book, and Seay only stops now and then to offer some guesses on what the rock star was thinking.

Seay also has an annoying habit of playing favorites with the assorted people who surrounded Jagger, especially women. For example, Marianne Faithfull is venerated as a saintly junkie/convent girl, whereas Anita Pallenberg is vilified as a "depraved den mother" who would try to get advantages with "her body and her wicked imagination." Bianca's gambling and sexy clothes make her an even bigger target. On the other hand, the raging excesses of the Stones are often glossed over.

Sleazy excess and Jagger's overactive love life are the focuses of "Mick Jagger: The Story Behind the Rolling Stone." There's nothing new here, and little worth checking out.

I couldn't help wondering if Jerry Hall ever regretted writing this one, penned while she was still bonded with Mick Jagger. Was it ever used as "evidence" in her divorce trial? Did it return to haunt her?
Forgetting those questions, this book is just a fun romp for readers, as Jerry opens up and lets loose on her philosophy about how to handle men...including Mick, who Jerry admits was far than faithful. The picture section is a nostalgic trip through rock's early days and Jerry's younger years as a top model and crazy woman.
My advice? Grab a copy now while the price, high as it is, is within reach. You won't regret it!

    Book Description

Known for his strut and stomp, the present-day Sir Mick Jagger rose from humble beginnings with his best friend Keith Richards to become the ultimate rock star, an electrifying stage presence who helped the Rolling Stones sell millions of records and inspire sometimes scary levels of devotion from fans, critics, and groupies. Known for his lively, authoritative biographies of noted rockers, Alan Clayson takes on the "Prince of Pout," whose flamboyant performances and over-the-top lifestyle often overshadowed his enormous skill as musician and writer. Clayson delves deep to find what drives Mick, his influences on other performers like Steven Tyler and Bon Jovi, the provocative sense of humor, the years of sexual and drug experimentation, the tragedy at Altamont, and his seminal position in the "free love" movement that made rock and roll life so alluring in the 1960s.

        1 out of 5 stars Beware.......2000-11-06

Readers, please beware of reviews like the one from the "Reader from Danville." How much of this book can be substantiated by reliable trustworthy sources? Probably not much... Reader from Danville, although it is true that Mick Jagger is not the posterboy for family values, you should not succumb so easily to sensationalism of this sort. Please try to read other sources and get a well-informed view before you make such harsh judgments.

        4 out of 5 stars HE'S So Cold!.......2000-07-24

As a long-time Stones fanatic, I try to read everything, both good and bad, that is published about them. This book has lots of information that's been printed in every tabloid in the past twenty years (I'm including People magazine in that category). However, read under one cover, the picture that's painted of Mr. Jagger really gives one pause: he emerges as cold, opportunistic, and tighter than a tic when it comes to meeting his financial responsibilites to his many children. His daughter Karis, by the dancer and actress Marsha Hunt, suffers the most. It was a wonder that she not only had him at her recent wedding, but actually treated him like a father and had him escort her down the aisle. He denied his paternity for years, and when the proof proved otherwise, paid a minimal amount for her support and did so under great protest.More importantly, he refused to be a part of her life for many years. The impact of this sad but interesting book is significant;after reading it, I still love his music, but I don't think much of him as a person.
