5 out of 5 stars Nice book. A little pricey........2007-09-30

I needed this book for a master's class I am taking. It came and was everything I expected. It came quickly and in good condition. I was a little perterbed by the cost of this book in relation to it's size. A little book at a big price.

3 out of 5 stars Repeated Information.......2006-01-29

this book had a lot of information, but nothing that required an entire book to cover. there were a lot of "methods" and ideas to incorporate in the classroom, but the organization of the book made it cumbersome to follow the examples. If you are the type of learner who appreciates a ton of examples this would be a great reference.

    Book Description

In the day to day grind of higher education administration, student affairs professionals know that different institutional types--whether a small liberal arts college, a doctoral intensive institution, or a community college--require different practical approaches. Despite this, most student affairs literature emphasizes a "one size fits all" approach to practice. In this book, leading scholars Kathleen Manning, Jillian Kinzie, and John Schuh advocate a new approach by presenting thirteen possible models of student affairs practice. These models are based on a qualitative, multi-institutional case study research project involving 20 institutions of higher education varying by type, size and mission. By accessibly presenting different types of intuitions that have all experienced high levels of student engagement and graduation rates the authors set out to discover the policies, practices, and programs that can contribute to student success.

Praise for Nonprofit Boards That Work

"This book offers a refreshing and candid look at the challenges of nonprofit boards. It moves away from theoretical frameworks to take you inside the real world of nonprofit organizations. . . . A must for any executive director who needs reassurance that building effective boards is tough work, but well worth the effort."-Sherry Rockey, Executive Director, International Women's Media Foundation

"Maureen Robinson is uniquely qualified to help us understand the issues related to boards that are effective, those that are not, and why. It is certain that board members, potential board members, and executive directors who read this book will better understand their roles and responsibilities, and will be better able to avoid common pitfalls. As a result, the impact of their efforts on those whom their organizations exist to serve will be enhanced."-Ron Burkard, Executive Director, World Neighbors

As more than 10 million people in the United States alone say yes to board service, they also expect to see their time and talents used effectively. This invaluable book presents a straightforward approach to understanding the role of the board, tailoring its work to meet the needs of specific organizations, and creating a culture of board productivity that makes participation rewarding for board members as well as the organizations they serve. Nonprofit Boards That Work:

. . . and much more to guide nonprofit organizations and their boards toward accomplishing the goals they seek.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2002-09-22

This is a very practical, common-sense book. It is very obvious that the author has a lot of experience with what works (and doesn't work!) in the real world. If you serve on a nonprofit board, or are considering doing so, I very strongly urge you to read it.

4 out of 5 stars Don't Put Your Trust In One Governance Model.......2002-08-05

Since the publication of John Carver's "Boards that Make a Difference" in 1990, much of the literature about nonprofit boards has been directed to supporting or debunking Carver's presentation of a universal governance model. The subtitle of Maureen Robinson's recent book (the end of one-size-fits-all governance) advises the reader of this author's point of view that whatever their similarities, nonprofits differ dramatically in terms of scale and structure, organizational history and cultural traditions. "A million nonprofits will arrive at almost as many variations in strategies for achieving good governance" she writes. "Each Board must fit its performance to the needs of the organization it serves and be willing to change as the organization changes."
Particularly useful in this context is Robinson's differentiation of the board's role into three "dimensions:" legal, functional, and symbolic. The legal dimension represents the board's fiduciary role and its stewardship duties. The functional dimension is the board's role in managing and delivering the organization's programs and services. The third dimension is the board's symbolic role as an exemplar of the values and culture of the organization.

Thankfully, the author also sets out to correct any misapprehensions that governing a nonprofit organization is easy. While the theory of governance may be simple to grasp, implementation is difficult no matter what the size of the organization. Although the board is referred to as a unit, she explains, it is actually a collection of individuals with their own unique reasons for being on the board and their own individual strengths and limitations. Quoting Cyril Houle, she concludes that "a good board is a victory, not a gift."

In the early chapters, the author discusses the value and roles of the board, and suggests strategies for managing meetings and structuring committees so that the board can focus on what she considers essential elements of the job of all boards: financial oversight, planning, evaluation, and fundraising.

Later chapters address the interpersonal dimensions of board-building: the role of the chairperson, the nature of the relationship with the executive director, recruitment, training and evaluating board members.

The author writes in an engaging and personal style with insight and examples from her experience at the National Center for Nonprofit Boards, the Smithsonian Institution, and the American Association of Museums. Interspersed with examples are many suggestions, mostly directed towards chairpersons and executive directors. Addressed to a relatively unsophisticated reader, there is no trivialization of issues, nor condescension. In 176 pages, the book covers its subject quite well. Not to be seen as a manual, it would be useful to anyone in a leadership role in nonprofit organizations. In nonprofit management classrooms, this book would also make an excellent text, presenting an alternative perspective to that of John Carver.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars A good starting point.......2007-07-20

This book is a good discussion starter for why your church may be stuck at a certain level. It offers some good tips on how a church mught break through a given attendance barrier and what obstacles need to be overcome.

This is a book for church leaders to read together. The first question they must answer after reading the book is, "Do we want growth badly enough that we are willing to change?"

    5 out of 5 stars A Pastor's Best Friend.......2006-06-08

Did I get your attention? I realize that the pastor's best friend is God and best human friend is a spouse. I realize the most important book in the pastor's library is Scripture. But this book is VALUABLE with big letters!

This book is valuable because it is solid and practical. None of it is novel. None of it is new. It is not experimental. It is all based on time tested proven data, readily available from a variety of sources and should be taught in any pastoral leadership course.

This book is valuable because it is written with an easy to understand, step-by-step style that will open the eyes of laity on church boards. I took my church boards through this book, 3 chapters/week for 4 weeks. By the time we finished we had prepared an action plan that is turning our church around.

This book is valuable because it lays down unmistakable guidelines to expose dysfunction. By the time our boards had finished this book there were few people who could hide dysfunction behind pious language. The people saw it for what it was.

    DRAWBACKS:

The book does have a couple of drawbacks. It is written in story form. Some of my congregation did not like the story. They just wanted the meat of the material. Chapter after chapter added to one overall chart. By the time the book was half finished I had people who skipped the chapters we were on and went to the final chart.

    RESPONSE TO CRITICS:

Most critics of this book point to its lack of theology and spiritual depth. That is not the point. Some pastors are competent but do not have a godly character. Others have character but lack competency. Some leaders have great personal spiritual depth, but lack public presence. Today's churches and church leaders need to have it all. Granted, this book has limited scope, but it doesn't pretend to be a theological work. It attempts to be a management tool. Leadership doesn't have to be "either/or", "it should be both/and".

    ADVICE:

The drawbacks do not compare to the advantages. EVERY church board in EVERY church should go through this book, if for no other reason than healthy self-diagnosis.

4 out of 5 stars Practical, a good book for its scope.......2004-12-13

In response to the other reviewers, I do concede that this book has its weak points. It is not as expansive as other organizational/management books out there (i.e. "secular leadership" books) and yet does not have the spiritual core of some other Christian leadership books (i.e. Purpose Driven Church).

But as a youth pastor of a church, I find the book to be practically applicable where I am. Our church right now is 500+ congregants, and yet, much of the growth has been recent growth (with a recent new building too). Many of the church's older members, as well as the others in leadership, are still very fond of a "small church" model, and they find it hard to transition into a medium/large church model. Some of the issues that McIntosh raises are very valid- in part because most seminary training does NOT cover the practicalities of church ministry (can I get an AMEN from pastors out there?)

Seminaries will not teach you "how to run a board meeting" or "how to communicate vistion" or other nuts & bolts. Oftentimes, a pastor has great theological training... but then falls flat because of church politics, interpersonal dynamics, or organizational pitfalls. This book addresses the organizational side of things, not comprehensively, but practically.

I believe, when considered in terms of the scope of the author's intent (or, what I believe his intent to be), it communicates what it set out to communicate: that churches are different- part organism (i.e. alive) and part organization (i.e. structure). The book is short, succinct, and written like a "conversation" between two pastors, compared to some other books that read like statistical research papers. This is a resource that I can recommend to my church board, tell them to read it, and they can, without feeling intimidated.

I didn't read into it as saying "all churches must push to be large churches." I think a church by its nature MUST grow- the early church in Acts did. And as a church grows, its leaders must be able to chart the course ahead. This fits my church, struggling with a small-church mindset + large church attendance.

Not all churches are the same... hence one size doesn't fit all. This book may not fit your church and your context, but that's ok. I think that's the point. If you are a leader in a small church, that's great... this resource might remind you of the blessings you have in being a small church. If you are part of a medium sized church, then this will remind you of where you've been as well as where you are going. And if you're in the small percentile of large-church, then this gives some "organizational tips for pastors"... easy to understand, practical, and short. It does not overwhelm the already-full schedule of a pastor

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointment.......2004-09-22

Found the book to be statistical and fact based but lacking completely in spiritual base. Personally I am tired of church politics, plans, and games and am more interested in a church interested in having Christ as the center. I think a church would grow on that basis. People want God, not programs, and as for pastor they want a friend and leader but not a dictator/ruler.

    1 out of 5 stars Deceptively Titled.......2004-05-04

Based on the title and the blurb, I was expecting a book that would offer some suggestions for the best strategies to minister effectively in churches of different size. Instead, this insipid waste of paper keeps circling back to one theme: Bigger Is Better. According to McIntosh, you must add staff now, and start new ministries now, because you must grow toward becoming a large church. Sure, some folks might not like it and they'll leave, but who needs them anyway - you're bringing in new folks!

All of McIntosh's suggestions are driven by pragmatism. There is never any consideration of eccelesiology (the theology of what the Church is and should do). He seems to view the pastor as a corporate CEO, whose job is to set the vision for the organisation and then convince his session/diaconate/vestry/trustees/whatever-they-use-in-your-denomination to go along with it. McIntosh's pastor is certainly never a servant leader.

If you want a good book on organisational psychology, management philosophy, etc., this isn't it. You'll find plenty of much better books in the business section with material that you can adapt to fit a church setting. If you are looking for a thoughtful analysis of what the church should be in the world and how the distinctives of different size churches facilitate accomplishing Christ's mission for His Church, this book definitely isn't it. I feel like sending the author a bill for the time I wasted reading it.

There are some books that are just fun to read. They require little thought and you just immerse yourself into them and enjoy. Ben Patrick Johnson has written such a book with "One Size Fits All". You just sit down, open the covers and have a really good read. Johnson, himself, is voice-over actor and you have probably heard his voice introducing such TV shows as "Entertainment Tonight" and "Judge Joe Brown" as well as in several major motion picture trailers.
"One Size Fits All" is the story of Nelson Vargas who is simply a nobody at least until a magazine in Los Angeles runs a profile on him and refers to him as a hot young designer. That was all it took for him to become a "who's who" with the hoi polloi of Hollywood. Everything worked cut perfectly as Nelson hit the wire just as awards time was about to begin. Three Oscar nominees for best actress simply have nothing to wear for the big night and come begging Nelson to design "THE" dress. Now the problem is simple. He has the idea for the perfect dress but e has promised it to the three different women. If he gives the dress to the wrong woman, he will never be able to eat lunch in Hollywood again. Nelson has a decision to make and it isn't an easy one.
We love awards shows and we love to see what everyone is wearing so we understand Nelson's dilemma here--the legend, the newcomer or the class act. For me to go into any more detail would spoil your reading fun but before I tell you to rush out and get this book, let's look at the women. Mamie Redbird has never received an Oscar and she is a Hollywood legend; it may just be her year. Katie Glassman, on the other hand is one of the new breed of Hollywood; she is young, she is hot and she has the will to succeed. Iris Bolin, an African-American actress is determined to win the award to prove she is a serious actress. The same problem stands in the minds of the three women--what to wear. And Nelson has designed the perfect dress of which he has promised to all three women.
This is an easy book to read and it is amusing and just plain fun. We love the Oscars and the added intrigue makes them just that much better and certainly more fun.
There are really interesting characters and good Hollywood dish and this is just the book to make you forget the heat of summer.

THIS BOOK IS ONE LONG DRAGGED OUT STORIES OF SOME OF THE BORING PLACES AND PEOPLE JOHN MADEN HAS ENCOUNTERED ON HIS MANY TRAVELS. I FOUND MYSELF WISHING THIS BOOK WAS MUCH SHORTER. I FOUND THE ONLY INTERESTING PARTS WERE HIS DESCRIPTION OF THE BUS AND THE DINNER IN WHICH HE WAS ROASTED BY A VARIETY OF PEOPLE IN THE FOOT BALL WORLD. HIS OTHER BOOKS ARE SO MUCH BETTER THAN THIS WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY. NOT WORTH IT.

You feel right at home on his bus, playing poker with him and his buddies, heating up some sausage links, enjoying a few beers, and running into all kinds of people in all kinds of towns along the way. John Madden talks to you, not at you.

      Book Description

Societies emerging from protracted conflict and violence face numerous challenges at the individual, community and national levels. Accordingly, a variety of strategies have been suggested for "healing" the wounds of the past and coping with the future, thereby facilitating national reconciliation and peace buildings. One of these approaches is the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, TRC, believed to provide a veritable platform for victims and perpetrators alike, to have a voice that would enable them to come to terms with the horrifying past. In Africa, TRCs as strategies for coming to terms with the past came into prominence following the example of South Africa after the end of apartheid in 1994. Since then, TRCs have been set up in Rwanda and Sierra Leone, while one has been proposed for Liberia. From such a standpoint it is tempting to argue that there has emerged what we can call a "one size fits all" syndrome; that is, if the TRC "worked" for South Africa, a position that is the subject of intense debate within and outside that country, then it is "good" for Sierra Leone, Liberia or any other African society that is emerging from protracted violent conflict.

The main purpose of this study, therefore, is to draw attention to the TRC phenomenon in Sierra Leone, to stimulate discussion on the diverse questions surrounding its rationale, processes and outcomes, especially its impacts on post conflict reconciliation in the country. Another goal of the project is to document the multiple and conflicting perceptions among various groups in the TRC processes, and how such perceptions were reflected in the Commission's work and recommendations. Finally, it is expected that the study would form the basis for future empirically grounded research and policy analysis, more extensive research and perhaps even collaboration, between the author and those working on innovative but home-grown mechanisms for promoting reconciliation in post war Sierra Leone and elsewhere.
