4 out of 5 stars good ideas, little sewing exp needed.......2006-12-05

I'm a beginning bellydancer but an experienced seamstress. My specialty is in proms/bridesmaid/formal wear.Love that this book is spiral bound for laying flat. Lots of good quick ideas, with variations & samples to enhance & create more ornate costumes. Some of the projects will be easier with some sewing experience(some of the instructions might be a little unclear at first reading) but most can be created with minimal sewing skills. It is a good starting point.I consider this book a definite plus in my sewing library for branching out into costuming. The ideas presented go beyond just bellydance and can be used in other areas of dance and/or costuming. I have several of Devine's books on my wish list.

4 out of 5 stars Costuming from the Hip.......2005-08-20

The first in a series of these types of books, which are aimed at the amateur sewer as well as the professional designer. Just because it is a belly dancing costuming manual should not limit those interested in sewing and making costumes in general. This is a comprehensive guide to allow you to create your own designs, and not slaveishly following someone elses pattern and creation, and is a must in anyones personal library who are interested in fashion/costuming and theatre. This book also touches on the tradional costumes of the Middle and Far East throughout the ages, as well as theatrical costuming tips and design for every body type. Plus it includes patterns and design ideas, as well as dozens of graphics to illustrate the author's information.

5 out of 5 stars The Book I Always Come Back To When I'm Designing.......2003-12-06

I'm a costumer of the Philadelphia area bellydancers, with over 30 years of sewing experience under my beaded and bangled belt.
When I'm drawing up a new design for a customer, "Costuming From the Hip" is the book I always come back to for advice and moral support. There are lots of other wonderful books that address the sewing techniques that go into a costume, but few that address the unique concerns of a bellydance costumers.

Book Description

Bedlah, Baubles, and Beads is a book about designing and crafting the elaborate bra and belt sets worn by contemporary belly dancers. Also known as "dance oriental" and "raks sharki," belly dancing has numerous sub-styles that are defined not only by their movement vocabulary, but also by their distinctive costuming.

The first part of the book provides a conceptual framework by starting with a history of this costuming style and its origins here in the United States. From there, it concentrates on introducing the reader to design principles, methods, and techniques for developing figure-flattering styles.

The second part presents the materials, tools, and processes for putting together an elaborately decorated bra and belt set. Step-by-step illustrations for applying beads, a fabric shopping guide, and directions for constructing the bra and belt bases are all illustrated with descriptive diagrams to aid the reader.

Finally, the book finishes with a portfolio of styles and ideas for expanding the performance wardrobe. From skirts to accessories, these chapters introduce the essential garments that transform the bra and belt into a complete costume.

Detailed topics include:

* Step-by-step illustrations of beading techniques, including back stitch, couching, tambour beading, scatter beading, and more.
* Directions for making high-quality bedlah, from concept to finished costume.
* Techniques for developing beading patterns using clip art sources and transforming images into dynamic designs.
* Fitting and covering bras and belts.

An extensive bibliography and a list of mail-order resources is included.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good, clear instructions - makes you want to sew!.......2006-07-05

Inspiring! It has great notes on different styles and ways to flatter your figure, and clear directions on making your own costume for the moderately crafty. The beading section is highly recommended. I hear her website is good, too.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on the principles of design, construction and embellishment.......2006-06-14

As someone that is new to belly dancing I was surprised at the prices of the costumes. Being an avid do-it-yourselfer, I decided to figure out how to make my own. Unless you count 7th grade home economics I have never made a garment in my life, nor have I had any sewing training. This is not to say that I don't sew at all, because I do. I have made lined Roman blinds, pillow covers, duvets, and slipcovers for the v-berth of a boat. Garment sewing has been something that I avoided because it seemed far too complex. This book has given me the confidence to give costume making a whirl.

This book is extremely well written and very easy to follow. The directions are very clear, even for a novice sewer like myself. The book covers the following information:

PART - DESIGN
1. History
2. Contemporary Styles of Costume
3. Principles of Design
4. Designer's Toolbox
5. An Analytic Approach to Designing Bedlah
6. Designing for Every Body
PART II - BEDLAH CONSTRUCTION AND EMBELLISHMENT
7. Bra Construction
8. Belt Construction
9. Surface Embellishments
10. Beading Techniques
11. Developing Beaded Designs
PART III - COMPLETING THE LOOK
12. Skirts and Pants
13. Accent Garments
14. Dresses and Gowns
15. Accessories and Embellishments

The section on the contemporary styles of dancewear is very enlightening. The costumes that the author identifies go way beyond what a new belly dancer is aware exists. The author's drawings have opening up a new world of possibilities to me.

The principles of design outlined by the author are extremely helpful. The author managed to answer questions that I didn't know that I had. Once I read about the right and wrong way to proportion things, and emphasis different areas it all made complete sense.

Everyone can learn from the section on how to design for your specific body. We all have areas that we want to emphasize or de-emphasize and the author explains exactly how to go about it.

The author covers Bra construction in this book. However, I recommend her book "Embellished Bras" for a more complete dissertation on the subject. Embellishment of the Bra and Belt are the most difficult parts of the costume. If you can get those done you are home free.

Overall, I thought I knew what I wanted to make until I picked up this book. Now I am thinking my first costume will be an Indian costume from Sari fabric. The options are endless once you have this book for inspiration and instruction. I highly recommend this book to any dancer.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2003-01-28

This book is more than just directions for putting together bras and belts! Davina does a wonderful job starting in Chapter 1 as she gives the reader a brief summary of the costumes seen in the US over the past 100 years.

The true jewel in this book is going to be Chapter 3! Davina provides invaluable insight on the principles of design and wonderful examples of how it can translate to the cabaret bra/belt costume. Even if you have no desire to ever pick up needle and thread, you should read this book and make it a practice to sketch costume ideas on your personal croquis, as it will help you discover what looks good on you and what doesn't all without having to spend hours trying on various costumes!

4 out of 5 stars Best of the series so far.......2003-01-03

Of Dawn and Barry's series of Belly dance costumes books, this one is the best and most comprehensive. A good basic book explaning costume elements, design basics and simple construction techniques. As a very useful chapter on how to emphasise each dance move and enhance a dancer's physique through design details. Line drawings illustrate most the complex ideas although a few sewing stitches could have used pictures, too. An excellent addition to any library for the dancer or costumer alike.

5 out of 5 stars The best!.......2002-07-09

This book has all the information needed to make or select a spectacular, flattering costume. It is clear, practical and comprehensive.
I especally liked the Design section. Her method to design for individual body types is very objective. For example, she tells you how to both emphasize and de-emphasize wide shoulders. She makes no value judgements here - the dancer decides what effect she wants to make.
Construction details seem very complete. This chapter can help dancers select a well-made costume that will last thru many performances. All the essentials for making a complete ensemble!

4 out of 5 stars The Belly Way isn't about Bellydancing.......2007-09-14

Barring the DVD workout included in the back of this book, it is not about bellydance. It is about using the performance techniques of a bellydancer to improve yourself. This includes eating right so you have energy to perform, the idea that you are never out of the spotlight as long as you are seeable, and other important tips. It is well put together and very personable. I enjoyed reading it and applying some of the tips and tricks.

5 out of 5 stars A Complete Lifestyle Change {for the better}.......2007-05-29

This book will improve every single aspect of your life, really. I purchased it 4 days ago, and I still can't put it down. Confidence, beauty, self discovery, fashion, health, intelligence and more are all right at your fingertips!

With in depth coverage on every subject, this book goes above and beyond. It even includes an instructional DVD! I could not be happier. It has truly changed my life and my outlook on the world around me. I highly recommend it and I encourage you to check it out.

5 out of 5 stars Alt. to getting fit.......2007-03-08

This book teaches you how to get fit in a different way. A lifestyle change is necessary for weight loss to happen and to help keep it off! They show you how to accomplish that in this book. Each sister takes turns writing their own points of view. They also talk about how to help reduce stress, taking care of yourself, what foods are helpful... Very enjoyable to read!
There is also a bonus DVD in the back of the book!

5 out of 5 stars Charming, witty, and inspiring.......2006-12-11

I absolutely LOVE Veena and Neena. Much of the information in this book I have read elsewhere, but they do it in a way that seems far more approachable. What I mean is, Mireille Guiliano (French Women Don't Get Fat) and Gin Sander(The Martini Diet, Wear More Cashmere) have touched on many of these things in their books, but the twins come across as so much more down-to-earth and no where near as snooty. Guiliano and Sander seemed to me like snobby bluebloods whose advice doesn't really fit in the life of the average woman. This book is in the same vein, but was written by two smart and vivacious ladies who grew up as middle-class minorites, and therefore have a more realistic perspective. I have 5 of the twins' DVDs (not even counting the one that comes with this book) and I can honestly say they have changed my life.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Book!.......2006-10-09

I really loved this book, it would be great for a beginner, or even someone who's been bellydancing for a long time. It teaches you how to eat more healthy-it includes recipes for food and spa-like stuff(like face masks, etc) It includes tips on spicing up your wardrobe, losing weight, being more healthy and fit, how to do some bellydance moves, plus it includes a dvd-it's fun to do too! It includes things on music, like the instruments used-like finger cymbals. This book is very informative about bellydancing, and I'm sure if you love to bellydance, you will like this...especially if you want a more healthy life. It has a lot of info in the book and I suggest you try it if you like to bellydance.

5 out of 5 stars The Bellydance Book.......2004-10-05

This book fulfils its purpose, the history of Egyptian and Middle Eastern Bellydance, traditions, customs, dancers of the early Hollywood era who brought the dance alive in America.

The costumes and makeup required for performers of this beautiful dance and the spirit in which it is presented and loved.

This book encouraged me to keep teaching and researching this beautiful expression of life.

5 out of 5 stars Good for dancers and nondancers.......2004-01-02

The main thing I liked about this book was it acurately represented what bellydance today is all about. I would feel confident handing this book to a non-dancer and saying 'This should summarize it for you.' Our dance has so many stereotypes out there today, our community would greatly benefit if the misinformed read this book! It really is a collection of articles rather than a 'book' but it was divided up well and flowed nicely. The costume section is written by Dina the Costume Goddess and if you have her books already its the same information contained in them, but even though I have her books I still enjoyed reading over it in a different format. Plus it puts the information in one place as the information is snipets from several of her books (she currently has 6 out) There were a few sections I wish were longer, like the section on henna but I realize henna isn't belly dance specific and that each section deserved a book in its own right. I've been dancing for 5 years and I still came across information that was new to me, or things I've only heard of were explained in detail such as the lives of the Egyptian dancers of the 'Golden Era'. A very interesting and informative book. Also has great pictures sprinkled throughout so its even nice to just flip through and look at those, though it would have been even better if they were in color of course. I would say this book is a 'must have' for any dancers library.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners.......2003-10-17

I'm a bellydancing beginner and this book was extrememely helpful. It covers everything that a beginner needs to know in terms of style, costume, accessories, history, etc. If you have a question about bellydancing, this book probably has the answer for you. It even helps you with choreography in relation to different styles of bellydancing. Highly recommended!!!

5 out of 5 stars Everything you EVER wanted to know about BD..........2003-05-08

OK...this book doesn't contain EVERYTHING that you ever wanted to know about belly dancing, but it does a REALLY good job in trying to do just that!
Aside from the fact that this is the only book I've ever SEEN with wonderful modern pictures of belly dancers from all walks of the dance (tribal, cabaret, snake dancers), there is wonderful information in here about basic dance stuff, music, costumes, make up, props and much more.
I found the endless chapter on snake dancing a bit much for me (as I am not at all interested in dancing with a snake...and I think MORE time could have been devoted to using a prop that more other dancers use...such as a cane, sword or candles)and I also thought that there was a much greater emphasis on the Tribal style of dancing than cabaret in coverage...still...this is a MUST HAVE book for anyone who is persuing a career as a belly dancer or simply enjoying the splendor of Raqs Sharqi as a hobby!
I TRULY hope that follow-up editions are in the works!!! I'd love to see more!
Gia

5 out of 5 stars An absolute Must Read.......2003-01-27

This is an excellent book with nearly everything you want to know about belly dancing within the pages. It is sectioned nicely, so that it is not a tedious read *never*, and the sections go by quickly. Say you have 5-10 minutes to wait, you can learn quite a few things and be fascinated within that period of time by having this book handy. I carry it with me everywhere. Beginners, intermediates, libraries, advanced people without the connections..This book should be named The Belly Dance Bible. Great book, highly reccomended.

I just received this book today and, already, I can't put it down! Dolphina's writing style is friendly and conversational making this book a delight to read. The description of the belly dance moves is spot on and easy to follow. I love the beautiful photos -kudos to Dolphina for chosing women of all shapes! I have all of Dolphina's dvds and use them to reinforce what I learn in my weekly belly dance classes. Now, I have her wonderful book to use as well. In fact, I intend to take this on vacation so I can keep up with my dancing! Thanks Dolphina, for producing such an invaluable reference book for belly dancers of all levels of experience! I certainly hope the publisher does a second printing of this book - I would love to give one to every woman I know.

5 out of 5 stars great instruction and photos.......2007-05-11

this is a really good book. great visuals, including arrows showing the directions your head, arms or hips should move. good descriptions on what to do. the bellydancers have nice outfits and it really covers all aspects of belly dancing. i've taken a class before and find this to be a great refresher with some new information too. this would be a good gift for someone interested in bellydancing. enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Great supplement to Bellydance Introduction.......2007-01-23

This book can stand on its own as training for belly dance, but I haven't used it that way because I do Dolphina's Goddess DVDs as workouts. The photography is excellent and the descriptions of the moves make sense. If you want to refine your moves in bellydance DVDs, this book provides good tips. It also includes routines, so you can perform belly dance to your own music if you want to expand beyond the traditional DVD soundtrack.

Visually pleasing. The models and settings are lovely, but I didn't feel as if their level of fitness was out of reach, which is nice. There are several models, including Dolphina.

There is a brief history of belly dance in the beginning, but the emphasis is on how to perform moves and the routines.

5 out of 5 stars This is actually a very useful book.......2006-11-25

I used this book as a filler to lessons while I was traveling and I have to say that it did the trick. Dolphina makes it clear the moves she is expecting you to do and makes suggestions to practicing them that certainly made for a good physical and mental workout. I really love the photography and I like how the book progresses, containing 3 sections so that you can build up to a more difficult workout. The combinations are lovely and put together a very pretty dance once you are complete with drills. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is going to be without lessons &/or dvd access and doesn't want to lose their momentum.

This book is very helpful and I love the format! I just need to get off my tuff and apply myself. I read through the book and it is marvelous.

5 out of 5 stars Great intro to the world of bellydance.......2005-01-28

This is a great book, with tons of gorgeous pictures and info about starting bellydance. Rania is also gorgeous, but not in an intimidating way, so you feel like you could be just as sexy as she is by bellydancing. This book and the one by Tamalyn Dallal definitely have a place on my bookshelf now, and the CD that comes with this book, which is full of great songs to get you started, has an almost permanent home in my CD player.

4 out of 5 stars Just bought it yesterday.......2005-01-11

I just bought this book yesterday. I am very happy with my purchase; more so with the purchase of her videos. What made me pick the book up off the shelf was the vivid color pictures on the front and back covers. That is was also made me buy it. Rania manages to overcome the hurdle of trying to teach dance moves from a book by having 3 or 4 serial shots of her performing some of the moves. She also demonstrates the importance of proper posture by showing several side views of herself performing.
What I also liked is the fact that she devotes a chapter to describing the aerobic benefits of Bellydance, then underneath the title of each move she demonstrates, she gives a brief description of what the benefits are for that particular move.
She also demonstrates the Khaleegy Head Toss and the Zar Head Roll, mentioning that that the head roll should only be done once or twice, lest you hurt your neck.
There is a short chapter on the history of Bellydance, her own introduction to the dance, layering movements for a routine, balancing and floor work, use of a veil, warm-ups, and a glossary of terms.
She lost one star because the included music CD was so-so (some of it was a repeat from the Bellydance Divas dvd), and the fact that she says in the book that she tells people all the time that Bellydance is her only workout; she does not lift weights. Then she mentions in another part of the book that she used to take gymnastics when she was younger. That gave me the impression that she was never overweight (like I am now). So I think that she has no knowledge of what it takes to "Shimmy away the fat"
However, I am happy that I bought this book.
CHALLENGE: I would like to challenge Rania or another certified fitness trainer/dancer to take an overweight person and slim them down and get them fit with bellydance and diet alone.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book!.......2007-06-27

Having been playing percussion in Middle-eastern music for over 15 years, and also being a string player, I finally wanted to learn the way to play the music with melodic instruments. I bought a baglama saz and began messing around, but was not satisfied with my knowledge of the scales used in this music.
Cameron has been a friend of mine for roughly 6 years and I have always enjoyed his mastery of the oud, ney, and voice in Middle-eastern music.
I told him that I wanted to learn more and he suggested I study this book.
It is, by far, the best source of the kind of information I was looking for that I have yet encountered. Since studying this book my level of playing has grown exponentially!

Book Description

From Turban to Toe Ring is a guide for designing and making tribal-fusion belly dance wear. This style, which originated in the San Francisco dance community and has spread world-wide, is fast becoming one of the most popular costuming options. Tribal-fusion costuming is an assemblage of design elements pulled from many different tribal, rural, and nomadic peoples from North Africa, across the Near and Middle East, and as far away as India. Surface design techniques, articles of clothing, and jewelry components are fused together to create a look that blends all of these items into an exciting and uniquely individual image for each dancer.

This book will be an excellent reference source for the libraries of dancers, costume designers, historical re-enactors, and dancers who want a break from the high glitz and glamour of cabaret-style costuming.

From Turban to Toe Ring contains numerous hints, tips, and directions for making, designing, and assembling a tribal-fusion costume, including:

* A country-by-country breakdown of tribal jewelry styles from the Berber people of Morocco to the Ribari of India.

* Patternmaking directions for several different choli and salwar designs.

* Directions for traditional surface embellishments, including applique and shi-sha.

* Mehndi (or henna), from mixing the paste to creating your design.

* Adapting Indian textiles, such as the toran and chakla, for tribal-fusion dancewear.

* Extensive bibliography and guide to historical research of Middle Eastern costume.

I have been looking for information on belly dance costume making. This one was the very helpful (especially for my personal needs). I found the information on making shi-shas and have been doing them on a table cloth for Tarot reading.

Anyone who has the ability to sew or conceptualize a costume will be able to structure their own outfit, with authenticity. Highly recommended!

Book Description

Bellydance is incredibly popular today, but many prejudices remain about this art because it is not understood deeply enough. In the Secret Language of Bellydance, the author Maria Strova, renown dancer and teacher, reveals the inner meaning of this dance, far beyond the taboos of the body and the imaginary images of the harem - where the dance is erroneously considered to have originated. This confusion has influenced, not always in a positive way, the image of bellydance even today. But where did bellydance originate? What inspired its gestures, what is the meaning of the veil, the jewel on the navel or the serpentine movements? “Everything in bellydance is secretly intentional and its movements hide an eternal language,” affirms the author. From this concept, she takes the reader on a fascinating journey into its prehistoric roots in the Neolithic Age. Imbued with a sacred character, the dance was part of ancient conception and birth rites and sought to explore the cyclic and cosmic processes of life. To illustrate this “original image,” Maria Strova utilizes the symbols of the dance: belly, omphalos or navel, waist, breasts, hands, eyes, hair, veil, spiral, serpent, and the elements earth, air, fire and water. All of the images are used as a key to reveal the poetic language of bellydance and its collection of myths, verse, secrets and personal experiences. In the actual practice of bellydance, this symbolic approach playfully calls on the imagination to reconnect us, through movement, with the instinctive, sensual and sacred wisdom of the body. Dance becomes a powerful instrument which reveals the profound life of the belly.

5 out of 5 stars COUREGEOUS.......2007-09-06

My favorite part of this wonderful book was the autobiographical section called 'My Secret Dance'. There, Maria tells her own story. We get a glimpse into the life of a very interesting and courageous woman, and a taste of the kind of dedication it takes to follow one's art.

5 out of 5 stars Shiny and Worth It Too.......2007-08-15

This book loses 5 stars for bad publishing and formatting, and for its sheer verbocity, but gains it all back for vivacious content. Not a primary reference book for dance, but a nice addition to anyone's dance library solely based on the author's intent and the scant few exercises the author prescribes.

Look, I instantly shy away from books that have flotsam photos and illustrations as well as over-fonted re-quotes in the margins as they smack too much of a publisher's interference and attempts to market to those folks who appreciate shiny objects (like me). It also is sad to see autobiographical information taking up more than a few pages in any book that wasn't meant to be an autobiography. I was disappointed to find this book had all of these symptoms of kitsche writing styles and cheap marketing. I blame the publisher, solely and completely. If I could roll this book up like a newspaper and swat the publisher, exclaiming "BAD, BAD PUBLISHER" I would (but security won't let me in the front door anymore).

I was pleasantly surprized to see that Ms. Strova actually listed her research references at the end of each chapter as well as in a full blown bibliography section at the end of the book. Now that is truly impressive and it made me want to actually READ the book instead of just look at the pretty fonts and pictures.

The content was not ordinary at all, and this is its most saving grace. Despite the spotty-but-good attempt to justify her "her"storical assertions, Ms. Strova really, really tries hard to put across the idea that dance is sacred (no longer a marketing ploy to neo-pagans, but a true attempt to reawaken artistic self-expression). In my opinion, she succeeds. Here, this book earns all its stars back.

I found myself "getting it" - now inspired to experiment a bit more beyond the mechanics of belly dance and the choreography of others, this book helps one to actually listen to the rhythm of Life. It inspires dancers and non-dancers alike to be better at recognizing their own, internal rhythms, without being too blunt (I did mention verbocity, but how can one put in words that which is without description otherwise, short of physically being in the room with you and demonstrating it?). Yes, Ms. Strova, I get it. You get waaaay more than 5 stars.

If just for that inspiration, this book is worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars A Full Written Expression of a Visual Dance............2007-07-19

How can one write a book in words that encapsulates such an ethereal visual dance? Well, Maria Strova has! I didn't want the book to end! I have many books on the subject, but Maria's is definitely a keeper. It is thorough, thought provoking, empowering, encouraging, spiritual, creative, and helps all dancers and women to understand the intrinsic value of what we do--and how to express that clearer in our dance. Through her captivating dance of words she was able to explain the roots and symbols of the dance, of the connection of women, the need and reasons to define for ourselves our own labels and definitions, and ways in which we can incorporate deeper meaning into what we are already doing. While I feel I already knew most of this "in my bones," it was wonderful and fresh to have it written down so I could just absorb it and be a part of it. I will definitely share this with my classes. She brings to words what is usually only felt and seen. A MUST READ!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have Tool for Bellydancers !.......2007-07-19

I highly recommend reading the secret language of belly dancing, It is supportive, quality information for rising star bellydance enthusiasts. It will give you a whole connection to the art form. You must have music and a costume, and an audience, but you feel very well rounded after reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Knowledge and Depth for Every Woman.......2007-06-13

I love Maria's book because it contains my favorite aspects of Bellydance, with answers to questions that have drawn us to it for a thousand generations, yet so few teachers include with technique in class. Her vast research and perspective reveal historic and cultural wisdom that allows each woman to integrate the most precious attributes of dance: feminine knowledge and the power of creation. What an inspiring gift! -- MESMERA

Book Description

Come, sit next to me, says Grandmother. Take this chalk in your hand. Now draw a dot and concentrate all your energy into this one dot. It is the beginning and the end, the navel of the world. So Fawzia Al-Rawi describes her grandmother's first lesson about the ancient craft of Oriental dance. Grandmother's Secrets always circles back to this grandmother and this young girl, echoing the circular movements of the dance itself. Al-Rawi has written a strikingly graceful and original book that blends personal memoir with the history and theory of the dance known in the West as belly dancing. It is the story of a young Arab girl as she is initiated into womanhood. It is a history of the dance from the earliest times through the days of the Pharoahs, the Roman Empire, to the Arab world of the last three centuries. It is a personal investigation into the effects of the dance's movements on individual parts of the body and the whole psyche. It is a guide to the actual techniques of the dance for those who are inspired to put down the book and move. Al-Rawi conveys in this book not only the history and technique of grieving and mourning dances, pregnancy and birth dances, but the spirit of these age-old rituals, and their possibilities for healing and empowering women today. Rosina-Fawzia Al-Rawi grew up in Iraq and Lebanon and was educated at the Universities of Cairo and Vienna. She is an expert in Arabic studies and ethnology, and the author of Golden Sky, Red Earth: Women's Lives in Palestine. She lives in Jerusalem and Vienna, where she teaches belly dancing.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Tired "secrets" of women's spirituality in Middle Eastern garb.......2006-11-04

Al-Rawi's account of her own introduction into a middle-eastern inflected version of women's spirituality is charmingly told, if occasionally a bit too good to be true. Perhaps the rose-colored glasses of recollection are to blame rather than any conscious attempt to manipulate the narrative...and the reader. However, when the focus shifts from personal reflections to general discussion of the titular "secrets," we are handed yet another variant of the women's spirituality mythology that appears in Eisler, Sjoo, Walker, Stone, Gimbutas, and even in the works of late 19th/early 20th century patriarchs like Engels, Bachofen, Jung, and Neumann. Of course, there are always good political reasons to perpetuate this story. The political goals have shifted several times over the past hundred years or so, and the interpretations offered alongside the mythology have been adjusted accordingly. In a way, it's refreshing to see this old torch taken up by a new, multicultural generation, and Al-Rawi gamely and competently spins a veil of Eastern mysticism around this tired narrative. Grandmother's Secrets is a fun read if you haven't already been overexposed to the alleged secrets. If this is a story you've already heard from other writers, the cosmetic changes made to it here will not hold your interest.

5 out of 5 stars Grandmother's Secrets.......2006-08-23

This is a wonderful book beginning with personal experiences by the author who is from a Middle Eastern culture that is followed by historical information and then a more practical guide for belly dancing. It gives insight into what belly dancing is really meant to mean and how it glorifies the woman's body without shame. I don't think many people (maybe Americans) realize this because it came to our country after the wars and was done strictly for entertainment of men who looked upon women as objects for their enjoyment. On a less serious note, it is indeed an enlightening book and I thoroughly enjoyed it...you will too---man or woman!

5 out of 5 stars Healing Power of Belly Dancing.......2005-10-12

A very informative book on the subject of Belly Dancing with clear meaning as to the Why's and Where's of movements

4 out of 5 stars Great History.......2005-10-07

This is a story of one woman, and how dance was used as a metaphor for life. Great, insightful, and a valuable lesson to others. It also brings to light the inaccurate way most Westerners view traditional Muslim women. I think we typically believe that Muslim women are background decoration and repressed, but this book showed that even in the 1950's, the women held their own ground. I loved the book!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Memoir .......2005-04-07

You won't find any direct instruction about how to belly dance here, but it's a lovely book that details the author's childhood and beliefs about the philosophical and spirtual aspects of belly dance. This book would make a nice gift for a beginning belly dancer or someone who's interested in knowing more about the dance.
