A good book for casual crime readers who don't need heavy details, but amazingly inaccurate in several areas. Seems to repeat old myths told in other books rather than do research.
ie Joe the Boss's hit team did not include Anastasia, Adonis or even Siegel
or
Dutch Schultz was not shot in the bathroom or even shot by Charlie Workman. The caliber of the bullet found in Dutch matched those used by his men, not those who had shot his men down. The more accurate tale is that he was mistaken;y shot by his own men while trading fire with Lepke's boys. (The bathroom was directly behind the doorway where Workman had to be shooting from)

Jewish criminals objectively presented by a Jew.......2003-08-26
The book is a reasonably objective record of the fact that even though the word "mafia" is Italian, not all gangsters were (or are) Italian (and thus Catholic)... many were Jews or WASPs for that matter. US Gangsterism was (and is) a USA product, partly because of the ethnic heterogeneity produced by immigration and to a great extent by prohibition. There is of course gangsterism in other countries but backgrounds differ.
The author catalogued the major Jewish gangsters, their family history, their social setting and their "activities". Being Jewish myself I was glad to discover: a) unlike Italian gangsters the Jewish ones tended to keep their families out of their "business", and b) Jewish economic emancipation after WW II practically eliminated Jews from the "business". An enlightening read though rather dry in the first half of the book.

A seldom-covered aspect of true crime history and Jewish history, "But He was Good to His Mother" is a fine read for anyone interested in either. It delves into the histories of several gangsters, their misdeeds, relationships to the Jewish community and anecdotes that shed some light on what these crimelords were really like. Plenty of photos are included.
Rockaway does a fairly good job of striking a balance in tackling a delicate subject. He points out the occasional admirable deeds of the gangsters (protecting American Jews from anti-semites, for example) while making it quite clear that these were very bad men. He fesses up that these killers and lawbreakers were admired by some in the community, but by no means all.
Occasionally, books about influential Jews get a little hokey when they gush over how the values of the Jewish community produced so many great people. (As though, without centuries of respect for learning by the Jews, Einstein might never have come up with relativity; whatever.) As a Jew myself, I think it feels more honest and refreshing to see it acknowledged that these same values and shared history produced some no-goodniks along the way, too. And ones who broke the stereotypes about Jews at that.
If anything, I'd have liked more information, more stories about the gangsters in the book. Especially nice would have been more on their role in the general public's perception and pop culture. The book doesn't tell you that the purple gang was infamous enough to be mentioned in Elvis Presley's JailHouse Rock, no opinion on who did a better job of playing Dutch Schultz (Tim Roth in "Hoodlum" or James Remar in "The Cotton Club"?), no word on whether Mickey Cohen was really as daft as James Ellroy portrays him, no mention of "Bugsy" or "The Godfather, part 2".
Still, I liked the book. I wouldn't label it an offer you can't refuse, but it's an offer it wouldn't kill you to accept.

Where's Waldo, but with Elvis.......2001-03-22
I bought this book for a friend who is an Elvis fan and now wish I had bought a copy for myself. It was a clever idea, with pictures of Elvis on the moon, in a crowd of hippies, etc.
Make 'em laugh.......2000-01-04
This book is funny and entertaining for all ages. Put it in circulation at a party and groups of people will cluster around, looking for Elvis, howling with laughter (I still haven't found him on one page). I discovered this book at a close-out sale last Christmas and, after reading it, went back and bought every copy the bookstore had in stock! Each person who received this book from me had the same question: Where can I get another copy? We cleaned out the local supply, so I'm delighted to see it can still be ordered through amazon.com. If you've ever heard of Elvis, if you have a sense of humor, if you understand Elvis is DEAD and this book is supposed to be funny, then buy this book. You will enjoy it. Five stars when you consider all books, all categories? No way. But it is a five star book in the light-hearted Elvis is dead, 8-80-have-fun-with-a-book, make groups of people laugh-at-a-party category!
Absolutely tasteless!.......1999-12-16
I bought this book after I read the synopsis. However, I was really, really frustrated that all the pictures were hoax. I mean they just pasted either Elvis's head or his whole body on the pics. Even a kid can tell that the photos are not genuine. And I laughed when I saw the very young Elvis photos in the 90's sightings. He should have been in his 60's, right? Please don't waste your money!
This is a joke book........1998-11-11
I ordered this book and immediately returned it. The entire book contains fullpage pictures of supposed Elvis sightings. It's apparent they pasted pictures of Elvis into other pictures, showing things like: (picture of Elvis in his early 20's among a crowd of people saying 1995). I really got offended when I received it in the mail, more or less, this book was published to make fun of people who are not sure whether Elvis is dead or not. Trash to a REAL Elvis fan.

I am 13 years old and I love Southern Gospel Music. From the first time I read this book I had a new look at their songs. Where they came from, why they were written. Some stories will make you think, some will make you cry, and some will but a smile on your face. I love this book, and i would highly reccemend it to everyone.

This book should be the FIRST book one reads when faced with the devastation of a husband leaving and cheating. It has been my source of encouragment, truth and inspiration. They identify each and every emotion that you experience and confirm that you are are NOT alone in what you are going through. They give you practical, encouraging advice/suggestions on how to work through such a painful, disappointing, humiliating experience. I look forward to reading it every day and I don't know what I'm going to do when I'm finished. I know, HEAL and press on! This book is essential in healing through the hurt and pain, the devastation and upheavel of your husband leaving/cheating and divorce!

This book was an excellent resource for me at a very critical time. I have already loaned it out to another friend facing the same situation.
I would recommend it to any woman who is facing the unexpected upheaval of divorce or separation. Read it slowly and digest the truths these authors share with women who are hurting but seeking God's help in this trying time.

In my darkest hour and most crippling pain this book was like a comforting hug. These women are putting their arms around you letting you know that they understand and that you are not alone; because they've been where you are and SURVIVED.
They are unbelievably candid about their hurts & hopes for the future - while the whole time leading you to the One who is the greatest healer.
Anyone who is suffering from a seperation or divorce should have this book - you deserve it...

This is the best book I've read so far since my husband left. I was married for over 30 years. I haven't read all of the books available on this subject, but this is the BEST one I've read. In fact, I'm reading it a second time. All of my feelings of betrayal, hurt, anger, shock, etc. are covered by two women who have been there, done that. So darn nice to not feel so alone in pain. Face it, if you haven't lived it you can't know how it feels. These women know.

When He Leaves was my lifesaver when I went through my divorce. My husband 'surprised' me with the news he wanted a divorce, and I was devestated. I used many sources for support, but this book was one of the best. The style it is written in is very down to earth and easy to follow, but it so on the mark with the feelings it describes. The book really goes through the different stages well, and helps the reader identify her emotional state and how to deal with it. I would highly recommend this book for women who dreamed of ever after, and had their husbands ruin that. It was my divorce 'bible'.

Attractive book, but..........2006-08-08
This book was very attractively laid out.It has a pleasing design. I had a giggle at some of the quotes. I'll give it credit for that. But this book included some nasty, unverified , untrue rumors about Elvis and James Dean and I find that offensive. I wonder how well they researched Jimmy in particular because Pier Angeli was left totally out of his list of Girlfriends and everybody knows she was the love of his life.Because of all that, I can only give it 3 stars.
Tricky, but Fun.......2002-05-08
Okay, who's had whom in Hollywood?--maybe not the most burning question of the day, but of particular interest to those alive and breathing before the tell-all mags of today. Naturally, a book like this can only be taken seriously by backing up its claims, otherwise its just nasty gossip and who condones that--Right? Here, author Mart Martin plays a pretty canny game. Each male celebrity gets a full page of formatted headings profiling his sex life, including personal observations, comments from others, a brief history, and an all-important naming-names list of backstage romps. There's an extensive bibliography of mainly biographies and autobiographies from which, it appears, the primary material was drawn. There are no footnotes however, and though the comments are attributed by name, the crucial lists are not. Instead, they appear under the weasely heading 'Lovers, Flings, or Just Friends'. Thus, Nick Adams, for example, can appear in the notoriously homophobic Elvis Presley's scorecard without Martin getting hauled into court. Juicy--but not exactly binding. What the guidelines are for these bi-sexual inclusions only the author knows. Still and all, the comments from collegues and romantic interests are often a caustic hoot--Judith Campbell on Jerry Lewis, 'Although he is serious about his flirting, from a woman's point of view it is funnier than his pratfalls', Liberace on himself, 'Men are my kind of people'. Chances are you'll find your favorites among the 201 even if you don't want to. My only remaining questions are : when did scorecard denizens like Joan Crawford, Marilyn Monroe, or Mae West find time to make movies or Truman Capote to write books; and also, why is a photo of '2001: A Space Odyssey' actor William Sylvester presented as the Shah of Iran?--and who is that straight-haired inebriate pretending to be the kinky-haired Nicholas Ray? Come on, Mr. Martin, if we can't trust the photos, what about the text. Still, I couldn't put it down.

Mart Martin has succeeded in writing a book that is as thoroughly researched and interesting as "Did She Or Didn't She?" This time he turns his attention to the men and presents a sometimes humorous and always interesting portrait of the intimate lives of 201 famous men.

Excellent, Interesting and Engrossing.......2000-07-08
This is an excellent history of slavery in South Carolina with a focus on the unsucessful revolt led by Denmark Vesey. The strength of the book is the history of Vesey and the evolutionary process that leds him to his death.
What is most intriguing was the discussion of Vesey's rejection of the New Testement as a guide for his actions and his use of the Old Testement as a guide. The book deals well with the issue of the effect of the masters use of the Christian faith as a justification for slavery on the slaves and freemens spiritual life.
The only flaw in the book was the authors obvious admiration for Vesey. Not that such admiration is not deserved, but it tended to color some of the more difficult issues in Vesey's revolt. For instance, a major controversey has arisen concerning whether as part of the revolt the whites of Charleston were to be massacred. The author does not deal with the claim other than to dismiss is as illogical. However, this dismissal is insufficent given the hate and feellings for revenge that the slaves must have felt toward their masters.
All in all, this is a very readable history important events in American history. A good read.

The author does a wonderful job of finding the true story of Denmark Vesey and incorporates intriging insights into his life. This is a wonderful book that illustrates what life was like for a dynamic slave who turned free. Egerton tells Vesey's story in a fascinating way and does a great job of recapturing Vesey's life. The author tells of how Vesey was a strong-willed, highly intelligent leader who had an ingenious plot to help slaves and free blacks to truly become free. The author shows how fascinating Vesey was even though his plan failed. This is a marvelous book and I highly recomend reading it! It is an absolute joy to read!

This book is dynamic and I highly recomend reading it. It is wonderfully written with extaordinary prose. The author does a superb job of bringing the readers into the time period and a wonderful jog of telling Vesey's story. Engaging diction and syntax keep the readers alive. There is not a dull moment in this book. Every page is filled th wonderful insights surrounding the times of the book. This book is a must have for people of all interests.I highly recommend reading it and sharing it with a friend. Douglas Egerton does a fascinating job of telling the history of Vesey's life and atmosphere!
