An Entertaining Life .......2005-07-14
My interest in reading George Antheil's autobiography came from admiration for his music and what he could relate about Paris in the 1920's. Mr. Antheil was a very good writer and wrote quite a lot during his life, particularly for Esquire magazine. He gives his writing a conversational style that flows nicely. I liked the fact that he began his book with stories of his brief career as a pianist and how hard it is to be a traveling musician. Must amusing is that he had a gun concealed in a silk holster when he perform - except once in Budapest when he placed it on the piano. His performances had been greeted with so many riots that he felt he needed the option to shot his way out of the concert hall.
Mr. Antheil's book is more the story of his life than a review of his musical life and compositions. He does discuss the writing of his operas, sometimes in rather tedious detail, but he rarely talks about his compositions with any detail. One interesting comment in the book concerns his Fourth Symphony which had been compared to the music of Dmitri Shostakovich. Mr. Antheil revealed that a good portion of the music came from his opera "Transatlantic" and so pre-dated all of the Shostakovich symphonies. Therefore, any similarities in style are coincidental.
We learn a lot from Mr. Antheil about his life and loves and money worries, and there are some interesting anecdotes about Stravinsky, Hemmingway and James Joyce but Mr. Antheil seldom focuses on his realtionships with other famous people. The chapter about Mr. Antheil and Hedy Lamarr inventing a radio controlled torpedo is very interesting but one is left wondering how they set about designing such a thing.
The book also provides an interesting look at Europe, particularly Germany, after the First World War. "Bad Boy of Music" is entertaining if sometimes a bit rambling at times but if you have an interest in Mr. Antheil's music this book is a must read.
Bad Boy of Music.......2001-08-29
This book is thoroughly entertaining. From tips on how to control and unruly audience(a pistol works well) to patents on guidance systems for torpedoes this book covers the gamut. Oh yes, he does talk about music. Get a copy of Ballet Mecanique and you will understand Mr. Antheil, bright mind, brilliant technique, tongue firmly in cheek and willing to be audacious 24/7. His music is really quite intriguing. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra played Symphony no. 5 'Joyous' during the 2000-2001 season and introduced me to this under-appreciated, under-performed American composer.
A gem by a forgotten Wonderkind.......1999-09-19
If you like the legendary "Autobiography of Edwark Bok" I think you will like this. It is a wonderful and witty book by a man who had a meteoric career and then was, strangely, forgotten. Extremely entertaining, very well written. One of the top 100 books I've ever read.
entertaining.......1999-04-06
This would have been much better if its author had limited his story to his adventures in Paris in the twenties, as did Hemingway in "A Moveable Feast". (Hemingway appears in "Bad Boy of Music" by the bye.) Still this is very entertaining. Its author exaggerates and invents and lies through his teeth--you might learn something.

Book Description
This is a tale of friendship, greed, and betrayal in the music industry -- and a definitive history of America's biggest rap mogul.
No one knows more about creating hits than Sean "Puffy" Combs. For years he virtually ran hip-hop. It seemed the perfect arrangement: "Puffy" provided the sounds and obsessive attention to detail while the Notorious B.I.G. promoted an image that kept rap fans happy. It should have lasted forever, but "Biggie" was murdered at the height of his career -- and "Puffy"'s ascension to superstardom ushered in an age of disloyalty and deception that exploded into one of the greatest debacles in the history of the music industry.
Through interviews with label insiders, grand jury testimony, and other sources, America's preeminent rap journalist Ronin Ro
- reveals the true story of "Puffy"
- addresses the larger issues that shaped the man and the industry
- explains how Bad Boy both helped and destroyed hip-hop and R&B music
- details why some artists "Puffy" created ultimately left his Bad Boy family in disgust.
At once an intimate history and a portrait of an era, Bad Boy shows readers exactly how Combs lost his strangle-hold over the multibillion-dollar rap music industry.
The story of Bad Boy Entertainment is the story of the American Dream, an up-close and personal account of the people, the money, the creative process that made it all come true, and the young mogul who caused the dream to fall apart. In this hip-hop tragedy of Shakespearean dimensions, readers finally learn the story that Sean "Puffy" Combs does not want them to know.

THE TRANSFORMATION FROM PUFFY TO DIDDY.......2007-06-20
This book offers a very detailed and accurate chronological compilation of monumental and pivotal events in "Puffy's" life and Bad Boy's history. While it often portrays Puffy as determined and focused, it also depicts him as an egomaniacal and self-serving tyrant. All the people who have played a key role in helping him build his Bad Boy Brand and near billionaire status are woven throughout this story of his meteoric rise to fame including Biggie; Craig Mack; Mase; The Lox; Black Rob; 112; Carl Thomas; Faith Evans; Mary J. Blige; Heavy D; Dream; Andre Harrell; LA Reid; Russell Simmons; and Clive Davis.
You will discover things about Bad Boy that you didn't know (such as Biggie selling his publishing rights to Puffy for $150,000), things that you wish you didn't know (like how Puffy used the tired 60s tactic of buying cars for highly pursued or recently signed new artists with their own money and used it as a smokescreen to blind them to inequitable business practices), and many other serious music business lessons. Despite the fact that this book ends abruptly, it's rivetting, entertaining, and highly informative. Ronin Ro should definitely update this. There's a lot that has happened with Puffy and Bad Boy since it was written.
Best That A Book On This Subject Can Be.......2004-09-20
I read this book in about 3 days and I couldn`t put it down. Ro echoes the sentiment of a Hip Hop patriot and tells just how doctored the music that we integrate into the fiber of our egos is. I would read anything else that he writes and he has great journalism skills. It is also super educational for would be hip hop r&b artist looking to learn about the harsh realities for the music bizz without reading a dry ass law book(law books have their place) but this makes the info a lot more palatable. I feel that the material here does not deal with Puff Daddy unfairly and it didn`t make me hate him , on the contrary I actually like him a little bit more then I did before. At the end of the day hes just a guy trying to make a profit off of the kids just like all the other CAPITALIST. I no longer dichtomize him into good or bad. I salute you Ro. Keep writing good work and I wanna hear that work. Big difference between social political artistic hip hop and doctored market commidity Rap. Drop Me a Line!!!
Objective but depressing.......2003-06-14
I enjoy reading about entrepreneur and learning about how they built their particular business into a success. If you are looking for the same thing in this book you will be very disappointed. The book goes through a blow-by-blow account of P Diddy's problems and ultimately questions his ethics. I believe the book is written objectively, but very few pages are are actually dedicated to expalining how he actually made the leap from intern to a CEO of a multi-million dollar company. That was the story I really wanted to read about. Unfortunately, I learned more about Puffy's legal trial than I did about how he built his empire. If you want an entrepreneurial focused book buy Russell Simmons' Life and Def instead.
This Book Is Incredible.......2002-04-11
Many people might not know about this book since it was released in early September of 2001. But Ronin Ro's Bad Boy is a must-read work. Instead of rehashing details about the coastal rap rivalry he already covered in Have Gun Will Travel, Ro presents an entirely different tale, in an intriguing new voice, but with the same eye for the telling detail. For the first time, a book details every stage of Puffy's career--Ro describes his days as an ambitious aspiring music executive, his first steps at R&B/rap label Uptown and his apprenticeship under Andre Harrell, his contributions to the rap remix format, his rise in the industry(precipitated by well-placed acquaintances at various rap magazines), and his relationship with the late rapper Notorious BIG (covered through a mix of Big's lesser-known interviews and compelling and exciting interviews with label insiders, associates and more). Bad Boy also reveals the creative process behind the label's string of hit albums during the 1990s, how Puffy marketed and--in some cases--watered down his artists' music and how he scrambled to save face after some, including The Lox and Mase, abruptly left the label and the man who claimed to have made them famous. Anyone expecting another book-length retread of the Bad Boy Death Row beef might want another book. Bad Boy is more than that. For a balanced look at Sean "Puffy" Combs and the empire he tried to build, the most in-depth portrait of Biggie Smalls ever offered, and a gripping account of Puffy's 2001 criminal trial, read this book.

Customer Reviews:
superficial, and lacks photos.......2007-08-28
As others have readily pointed out, the writing is quite mediocre. Somewhat repetitive in places. And often, just when a discussion about a band is getting interesting, and you are looking forward to more details, Diehl switches topics, and we are on another band. Very frustrating. Some hard core fans will decry what will seem (perhaps accurately) as superficial descriptions and accounts.
I simply could not finish reading the book. Too tedious. But I also noticed the sheer lack of photos. The book could have been enhanced with a few well chosen photos of several of the bands. Possibly at concerts. The omission of these suggests a hastily prepared and very low budget text. Granted, it often costs more to get photos. But in the case of bands, often the bands or their agents might be willing to offer good shots, already taken, for no or nominal fee.
Especially ironic considering his apparent infatuation with a female singer mentioned frequently in the text. She's very pretty, and a picture of her would have brightened the story for many readers.
Been there, done that........2007-08-23
Despite the issue that the author seems to worship at the altar of Brody Dalle and some of the facts are wrong (Hermosa Beach is in Orange County?), the author does a decent job of describing the music scene during the mid-90's. I think some back issues of the OC Weekly would have helped him out with his research.
Beyond Green Day.......2007-08-09
Dude. Brody's with someone else. Get over it.
Apart from the Brody Dalle obsession that's just plain creepy, this is a pretty interesting book. It's a very comprehensive look at North American punk (with a nod to England), its roots and its spawn, which will expand the horizon for people who've only experienced American Idiot. It doesn't take any particular ideological stand (except that Brody Dalle is the best thing since sliced bread), but rather explores the wide variety of styles and ideas which have evolved out of punk's original rebellious stance. It also gathers quotes from sources which many people never knew existed.
But it would have been better without all the drooling over Brody.
Things I learned reading this book.......2007-06-27
1. Brody Dalle, who took her last name from Louis Dalle, director of Pretty Baby, is really cool.
2. If you only interviewed eight people for a book, go ahead and repeat what they say a few times. Only people who read the whole book will notice.
3. Brody Dalle. Wow. Great singer, totally hot, really important band. She's Australian, you know. Took her surname from Louis Dalle, the guy who directed Pretty Baby.
4. If you're into leftist politics as a neo-punk, that's cool. If you're a conservative Christian neo-punk but not a racist, that's cool. If you're not into politics, that's cool, too. It's all punk and meaningful. Punk is so political whether it is or isn't. And that's... okay. Because it's punk.
5. Suicide Girls. Naked punk girls. *They* think Brody Dalle (did you know she took her name from the film director Louis Dalle?) is really hot. And they're hot punk girls so they should know. In fact, Suicide Girls, a porn website, deserves a whole chapter in this book, because they're so punk. And feminist. Except the ones who aren't. And that's cool. Because they're so darn punk.
What I didn't learn... well, I'm 44 years old. I remember being in a fair sized city high school with maybe a dozen or two other kids who liked punk rock, and then moving to a small town where only two of us in a high school with 1200 kids liked punk (or even knew what it was). I've watched as the kind of kids who hated punk then have spawned the new generation of mall punks who like idiotic bubblegum punk, even though there's still great punk rock being made today. I kind of hoped this book might explain how that happened. I was mistaken.
Oh, and the writing style drove me nuts. Not just the repetition, and the "I must be able to work Brody Dalle into this chapter somehow" singlemindedness, and the way people who were quoted every second page were always identified as (for example) "Agent M of Tsunami Bomb" -- yeah, I remember, okay? -- but the way it reads like a nonfiction magazine article from Rolling Stone for Twelve-Year-Olds. Right down to the end of the book, which ends:
"Meet the new punk.
"Chances are it looks a lot like... *you.*"
Isn't that special?
Should have just been a better edited Distilers bio.......2007-05-29
I enjoyed this book however I feel that there was too much Distillers and not enough NOFX or Bad Religion. Also, for some reason when he talks about the new school of punk rock bands, he completely fails to mention Against Me! who are far more influencial than a band like Simple Plan. Also, Diehl repeats himself telling the reader at least 20 times over the course of the book that Mr. Brett is the head of Epitaph. It's insulting to the reader to repeat yourself so much.

I love Gay, Be cause I'm one of them. I love Men and there body. Women are waste my time.
A reflection of our times, asking the men the hottest!.......2003-12-29
Who else has the guts to ask men how big they are, when they knew they were big and when the first time they did it? This guy does! It's a hot look at the world of gay and bi men and mostly men who do it for money with guys but consider themselves hetero.
"Interviews with Porn's Best".......2001-03-28
If you are familiar with Mickey Skee's previous interviews, you'll definitely want to check out this book. In this book he interviews 20 new Bad Boys of Porn, and most of the interviews are very interesting. You don't have to know most of these porn stars but it helps in understanding some of the people's names that dropped that are involved in the industry. I think I enjoyed "Vince Rockland's & Sandy Sloan's" interviews the most. These two seemed to be the most honest & no-holds barred interviewees. They tell it like it is. As usual the book is loaded with many hot nude photos of the porn stars.
If you enjoy viewing and reading about your favorite all-male porn stars this book is a must. It's really interesting to read about all these guys like's & dislike's, and to get to know them as more than just hot bodies on video. It's a great reference book, and a fascinating & enjoyable read.
Tell All/Show All... What Are You Interested In?.......1999-12-17
This book was like the previous book, BAD BOYS OF VIDEO. There are great photographs, both young and older versions of the person being interviewed. The author is very knowledgeable about his subjects. Most of the questions are similar between the interviews, so you can judge how each person stacks up (so to speak) among the professionals. You will get more out of the book if you know some of the people, where name dropping occurs often. I thought it was insightful into some of the lives of these 'actors'. This is a good quick read, especially on the beach.

Book Description
Edmund Goulding’s Dark Victory: Hollywood’s Genius Bad Boy is the first biography ever written about this eccentric genius of early-twentieth-century filmmaking. Goulding (1891–1959) was by turns a writer, producer, composer, and actor, but it is as a director that he made an indelible impression. He is most remembered today as the director of Grand Hotel, the great Event Movie of the Depression. At the dawn of sound, he wrote the story for the Academy Award–winning musical The Broadway Melody and collaborated memorably with Gloria Swanson and Joseph Kennedy for The Trespasser. He excelled at anti-war drama (White Banners, The Dawn Patrol, We Are Not Alone), fantastic Bette Davis weepies (Dark Victory, The Old Maid, The Great Lie), lilting romantic dramas (The Constant Nymph, Claudia), big-budget literary adaptations (The Razor’s Edge), and even film noir (Nightmare Alley). The London-born Goulding was a complicated and contradictory man whose notorious orgies, bisexuality, drinking, and drug addictions were whispered about in Hollywood for years. Yet his well-crafted plots and compelling characters set a new standard in American cinema and had a profound influence on the future of filmmaking.
Customer Reviews:
Matthew Kennedy Does It Again!.......2004-11-17
As I read Mr. Kennedy's first book about Marie Dressler and neared the end, I didn't want the book to end because it was a perfectly written book about a great lady who lived with great style. I was delighted when his Edmund Goulding book was published not a long time later, a feeling shared with my large book club that quickly spread to other book clubs in my city. Edmund Goulding's Dark Victory: Hollywood's Genius Bad Boy is impeccably researched and, although Mr. Kennedy is a scholar who also teaches, it is quite evident he knows the mechanics of good writing yet it is not stodgy. More succinctly, he writes a rollicking, gossipy book that dishes the scandal.
Mr. Kennedy writes about Mr. Goulding's exalted place in Hollywood's golden age, how he got there, and what guaranteed Mr. Goulding's place in Hollywood history. I learned about Mr. Goulding's background and gained insight into why he also led a tortured existence even at the top of the heap.
My book club and I look forward to Mr. Kennedy's new Joan Blondell book that promises to tell all. We are encouraged by the news that Miss Blondell's family is cooperating all the way!
Poorly Written Bio of Director who desserves better.......2004-10-01
I'm sorry to have to do this but the sheer torture of reading this book prompts this negative review.I have been reading this book for the past 2 weeks normally I read movie bios in a matter of days. The author has offered no insight into this man's life and worse he does no critcal thinking in regards to the films,in fact on the silent films I question if he has even seen them. But what promted me to even expend the energy to write this review is when I got to page 66.On that page there is a still which the caption says is from Love when in fact it is from the talking picture remake Anna Karenina and the author is a teacher of film history and he misses this mistake-give me a break.Sadly this is a case of a bad bio happening to a good director.
A Film Biography to Cherish.......2004-09-04
Matthew Kennedy has done a tremedous service in detailing so thoroughly and captivatingly the life of one of Hollywood's most fascinating directors. Goulding was not only a director (and a favorite one of such stars as Bette Davis, Joan Fontaine, and Gloria Swanson), but also a writer, composer, set designer, and cinematographer.
Kennedy details Goulding's scandalous lifestyle well, but is even more interested in Goulding's accomplishments as film director, screenwriter, composer, etc. The author effectively captures the complex and paradoxical nature of the English-born Goulding whose excellent scripts and extraordinary directorial talent set standards in American cinema that are still influencing filmmaking today.
This well-researched, illuminating, and highly entertaining biography is a must for anyone interested in the golden age of Hollywood and, for that matter, anyone else who just wants to read a fascinating biography.
Goulding of Hollywood's Golden Age.......2004-07-24
Author Matthew Kennedy does director Edmund Goulding (and films fans everywhere) a great service by bringing Goulding's story to life in his straightforward, well-researched, and highly readable biography. Although there's enough talk about Goulding's notorious orgies to satisfy gossip aficionados, Kennedy is more interested in the man's feats as a film director, screenwriter, composer, and all-around talent. The author emphasizes Goulding's creation of "Grand Hotel," one of the first Best Picture Oscar winners, his handling of numerous female stars (including Bette Davis in three films, Joan Fontaine, Gloria Swanson, and Ginger Rogers), and his deals (and troubles) with the powers-that-be at MGM, Twentieth-Century Fox, and Warner Bros. Highly recommended for those interested in the behind-the-scenes history of Hollywood's Golden Age.
Film writing at its best.......2004-07-18
I must add my chorus of praise for Matthew Kennedy, who has given us not only the life of a director with amazing talent, but also a new way of looking at both silent and sound films. Maybe you've heard of Goulding, and certainly you've seen a number of his films, but never before has anyone been abel to put together all the facts, do all the right research, and conduct an amazing number of pertinent interviews to produce such a stunning result.
If Goulding had only directed "Dark Victory" and "Grand Hotel" his place in film history would be assured--and even higher. It's his lesser efforts and indeed misses that have complicated his stature.
Goulding's work in music could be a book all of its own. I had no idea he wrote the music for so many films, including such notable songs as "Love Your Magic Spell is Everywhere" (from The Trespasser), "Mam'selle" (from The Razor's Edge) and "Dodie" (from "Teenage Rebel"). Given all that you'd think he'd be a natural filming a musical, but Kennedy's account of "Friendly Island" a/k/a "Down Among the Sheltering Palms" gives one pause.
Now I'm dying to see "We are Not Alone" and "The Constant Nymph." I've read both novels but are these films on DVD? Sounds like not. Oh well, something to look forward to. Thanks, Matthew Kennedy. You do San Francisco proud!
