Motivation.......2006-07-24
"The struggle" has always been a mainstay that epitomizes the hip hop persona. Eminem is able to detail his struggle to make it (a.k.a. "the come up") in his book "Angry Blonde" through his descriptions of each of his songs off his first two albums and the complete lyrics to each song. His introduction paragraphs to each song are the best part of the book. These paragraphs reveal how he came up with the idea for the track, how he felt when he wrote it, and tell the reader a lot about the creative process.
Eminem's first two albums truly tell the story of the man; "The Slim Shady LP" when he was struggling just to get by and in "The Marshall Mathers LP" with his reaction to overnight celebrity. Two of the most successful albums of all-time (not just in hip hop history), these albums sold over 28 million records combined worldwide. To look into the mind of a man that could make music that would be heard by so many people and to read those words that so many heard is truly motivational. As an artist whose dream is to reach as many people as Eminem, his words and story are an inspiration and provide me with one of the driving forces behind my career.
:-):-).......2005-09-26
It's one thing to hear his music, but to read what's behind it makes us realize why he is the way he is and why he is one of the best in the game- a must-read.
nice.......2005-08-03
I went and bought this book and it was what i had expected it to be, very good but nothing excellent. It provides an excellent insight into what eminem was thinking and the circumstances surrounding him as to why he decided to write the songs and the songs beginnings. It's good because this is written by eminem in his own words and through his feelings. the pictures are a nice supplement and so are the extra freestyles that are provided at the end of the book. very good and an essentiality for all Eminem fans.
A True Artist.......2005-07-10
This is the only official book on Eminem out there. This is the reason it will always be important for Eminem fans and anyone else interested in learning about him. The misunderstandings, misinterpretations and unnessecary labeling has occured in the past because of people's lack of knowledge about this artist, therefore in this book you can find out about the real Marshall Mathers. Eminem represents a generation and his music will always be significant in popular culture and the way popular culture influences culture itself. Eminem has made a difference in a lot of people's lives and continues to be an influential figure in music. You can find a biography, analysis of lyrics from Eminem himself and other useful information. After reading this book you will be ensured (if you already were not) that Eminem is a true poet the intelligence behind the lyrics will leave you amazed and wanting more. I reccommend this book with all my heart. Enjoy :)
Dope book.......2004-09-06
I LOVE YOU EMINEM!! Thank you for this book!! You are brilliant, please keep going!! I'm hoping you'll make a book just like this about your Eminem Show album...this book is full of Marshall's thoughts behind his music...funny and from the heart.
Book Description
does eminem matter?
On assignment for his first cover story for Rolling Stone, the very first national cover story on Eminem, Anthony Bozza met a young blond kid, a rapper who would soon take the country by storm. But back in 1999, Eminem was just beginning to make waves among suburban white teenagers as his first single, “My Name Is,” went into heavy rotation on MTV.
Who could have predicted that in a mere two years, Eminem would become the most reviled and controversial hip-hop figure ever? Or that twelve months after that, Eminem would sit firmly at the pinnacle of American celebrity, a Grammy winner many times over and the recipient of an Oscar.
did eminem change or did america finally figure him out?
Whatever You Say I Am attempts to answer this question and many more. Since their first meeting, Bozza has been given a level of access to Eminem that no other journalist has enjoyed. In
Whatever You Say I Am, original, never-before-published text from Bozza’s interviews with Eminem are combined with the insight of numerous hip-hop figures, music critics, journalists, and members of the Eminem camp to look behind the mask of this enigmatic celebrity. With an eye toward Eminem’s place in American popular culture, Bozza creates a thoughtful portrait of one of the most successful artists of our time. This is so much more than a biography of a thoroughly well-documented life. It is a close-up look at a conflicted figure who has somehow spoken to the heart of America.
From the Hardcover edition.

Very dull account of the social impact of Eminem.......2005-12-19
This is a tough read. If you wanted an interesting book about Eninem's rise to popularity and behind the scenes dirt on how Dr Dre discovered and nurtured his raw talent, then don't buy this one because this book has NONE OF THAT! Instead, every chapter is a dry account of how Eminem's music affects American society, media and culture. Really dull stuff. He even manages to make the history of rap sound boring. I've read 18 books this year but could not get through this one. The author writes for Rolling Stone and it shows... If you've ever picked up a copy of Rolling Stone and were bored to tears by the over analyzation of music and its social impact, track-by-track, then don't buy this book.
Title Is Misleading But Good For Rap Historians.......2005-12-19
I was so excited when I received "Whatever You Say I Am" for Christmas last year. Now, almost a year later, I've finally gotten through the final pages.
Why did it take so long you might ask? Well for starters, it was all I could do to keep my interest going. This is NOT an EMINEM BIOGRAPHY. I repeat, this is NOT an EMINEM BIOGRAPHY. The subtitle of this book is called "The Life And Times Of Eminem." While Anthony Bozza does a fine job of creating a book about the history of rap and how Eminem has influenced rap, it's culture and overall society, I soon figured out after reading chapter after chapter thick with rap's roots, that Bozza forgot to include Eminem's life in the book. Each chapter I started, I kept anticipating.....oh maybe this is the part where we get to see Eminem's life, influences, etc. But after reading yet another chapter of rap history such as with historical MC's like Kool Herc and Afrika Bambaataa, I realized I was wrong again, and had to psych myself up to keep reading. It just got a bit boring after a while.
Also, I am a slow reader in general, but reading this book made me look like a speed demon before. It was truely agonizing at times trying to absorb what I just read. I cannot tell you how many times I had to go back and re-read Bozza's long, flowery-worded sentences laden with so many commas, you had to literally look back to see where the pause was and where the next statement began.
I realize that all the background of rap is influential. Bozza talks of the Blues, Sly & The Family Stone and R&B, The first known rap song, "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugarhill Gang, famous MC's and the underground rap parties they threw, the controversy of Vinalla Ice, The Beastie Boys, and on and on. Bozza talks of how society has both embraced and despised Eminem after hearing the sides of the rapper, from his devotion to his daughter, his hate against women, his family-man traits, and his hate toward his mother. Bozza disects the reasons why society wants to listen to Eminem and why he changed the world of rap in more ways than just because he is white. Heck, Bozza even gives us the history of Detroit and how the rough and tough industrial city, it's racial barriers, rich suburbs and run-down neighborhoods shaped what Eminem became. This is all well and good, but again, where is Eminem's "Life And Times?"
We don't really even get a hint of Eminem's hard times in life on his way to the top until toward the end of the book. There you'll find a couple pages or so of Eminem's ups and downs with wife/ex-wife Kim, the fued with his mother who supposedly had some stability problems, all the moving around from school to school and home to home, his take on his father who abandoned he and his mother, etc. These pages were some of the most interesting parts of the book and were smooth reading for me, contrary to my staggered reading amongst all the history stuff. But this small section at the back of the book must have been what made the book a so-called biography.
The interviews were good; what there was of them. The main interviews basically follows Bozza and his journey with Eminem through the different parts of Detroit and where Eminem used to live, and you'll read about Eminem recalling what happened here and there. Then you'll also follow them into the old restaurant of home-cooked meals where Eminem used to work and listen to their discussions over pizza and booze. These too were some of the best parts of the book, in that Bozza's descriptions of the places and people around it enable the reader to get right into that actual scene and feel like he/she is a part of it.
But to put it bluntly, I wanted this book because I thought it would be a biography. I wanted to hear about how Eminem grew up on rap, how his upbringing influenced him, some history of the rap battles that he had to perform at to get to the top, the predjudices that he experienced along the way and all the other aspects of the "LIFE AND TIMES OF EMINEM." Bozza mearly just touches on these issues and devotes the rest of the book to how America has influenced Eminem, how Eminem has influenced America, how Eminem mirrors society and how he is in many ways the voice of a generation, the significance of racial issues and how this has shaped the outcome of Eminem's success, and on and on and on. So where is the "Life Of Eminem?" If you take a microscope, you can find bits and pieces.
Bozza has not written the perfect book about Eminem, but the perfect book about rap history and how it has shaped America. Bozza basically weaves rap society and American culture around the controversies that Eminem exhibits. To make a long story short, most of this book is about how a blonde, blue-eyed white guy came into the predominantly black rap world and peaked an interest in society not only because he is a white man in the black rap game, but because he is an authentic white rap artist who grew up with a rough childhood and around the rougher parts of society; mainly Detroit. It's about how Eminem used an upbringing and world of Detroit that he despised to create fuel for a lavish, successful career in the long run.
Overall, if you want a book about rap history, racial issues of rap, how society is influenced by rap and vice-versa, grab this book right now. If you want to know about Eminem; his "Life And Times," you might consider looking elsewhere because you won't find much of it here.
Well-written, but it should be called "Rap: 99-2003".......2005-07-01
In the first few chapters, Bozza did an excellent job of putting Eminem in context. It's important to remember what the culture was like in 99 when the Slim Shady LP came out: TLC's No Scrubs was number one, Lauryn Hill and Celine Dion were superstars, as were the Backstreet Boys and Madonna. The culture was different in 2000 for The Marshall Mathers LP, after Columbine and when the presidency was on trial. Then Eminem lived a reality celebrity life until the 2002 release of his movie 8 Mile, which rocketed him into mainstream praise from "older" critics and a huge, diverse, fan base.
I enjoyed the first few chapters of "putting Eminem in context." But then it went on and on and on and on. I have no idea what point each chapter was trying to make. Bozza wasn't telling a linear story of Eminem's career; rather, these are random essays/parts of interviews which could each stand on their own as a magazine piece. There is no benefit to having them gathered as chapters in a book, and reading chapter after chapter about Eminem's place with Dre, DMX, Puffy, rap magazines, Rolling Stone, the VMAs, etc. gets old. This is much less about Enimen than it is about pop culture, rap, and hip-hop from 1999 through 2003. Bozza doesn't even do a very good job making Eminem the unifying theme between all his comments on pop culture.
Bozza did an outstanding job with Tommy Lee on his auto-biography Tommyland. This was his first effort, and it shows that he is a talented magazine writer, but not a biographer. If you want a good read, go pick up Tommyland.
Eminem Bio ? .......2005-01-11
This book is a semi-Bio of Eminem. I think a person looking for the history on Hip-Hop, would get more insite on that, than I did of Eminem. Every now and then, he author would fill in 3 or 4 pages, giving you a little history on Eminem, but overall it kept slipping back into Hip-Hop History, and Culture. If you looking for a true Bio of Eminem, this big only gives a small supply.
Not a bio........2004-04-20
This is a great book if you want to read about Eminem and the hip hop/rap history, but if you need to read a biography this isn't really the right book. The fisrt 2 or 3 pages of each chapter is about the time Bozza spent with Eminem, nothing about him. I am pretty much obsessed with Eminem, so I enjoyed this book.

The Pretox to Detox.......2007-04-09
By now, Dre's musical influence acting as a template for other Producers has grown to such a common knowledge in the industry that it doesn't need saying anymore. However, one point that could stand a little more attention is how dre has single handedly managed to turn rap into a Producers game on the mainstream level. Prior to Dre's celebrity, producers enjoyed the limelight either in their own circles, on the undergroud or in front of the camera if they were the song and dance type. But after dre, suddenly everyone is checking to see who produced what song. This is not to say that DJ's were anonymous all this time, but certainly Dre has pushed our recent facination of them into the spotlight.
Part of this facination has raised the question: "What is it exactly that Producers do?" Lesser known producers have tried to answer this question and more often than not we are left unsatisfied. Maybe because what we are all really wondering is "What is it exactly that Dr.Dre does?" And that's where this book becomes what most fans, inquirers and even skeptics have been waiting for.
First, it might be helpful to describe what the book isn't: It isn't current, though you can tell it wishes that it was. This book apparently was not a passport inside the studio while Dr.Dre works his magic. So you're not going to find a recent, first hand account of Dre orchestrating, producing, conducting, coaching or guiding his musicians and artists. Descriptions like that happened after the Chronic, when a journalist described Dre taking a sample and re-shaping it with his own sounds. BTW, this early description is recounted in this book. But it's not clear if this is how Dre still crafts his beats. Surely his production methods have evolved.
You also won't find any new material or interviews with the man himself. But this is a mild dissapointment that passes when you realize that the author has taken the time to make a gumbo soup of quotes that came from the people who have worked with Dre over the years. Like the Ronin-Ro biography, most of these quotes are blow backs from interviews I read already. But having various sources under the same roof validating each other should at long last bring closure to some of the controvesy surrounding Dre's studio habits.
The most helpful and insightful pieces to this book are the quotes from the "2001" co-producer Mel-Man. His interviews and excerpts are entirely new (as far as I can tell) and save the book from being nothing more than a re-hashing of old information. Mel confronts and conclusively answers all those lingering questions about Dre stealing credit from other producers and more importantly what it is that a Producer like Dr.Dre does exactly in the studio. It helps that Mel's response are concise and well articulated -- a big relief compared to the choppy responses we usually get from rap artists. Mel-Man's contributions to this book alone justify the cost of this book.
Those who have been anticipating the release of "Detox" will be even more anxious once they get through the last chapter of this book. Both Mel-Man and Scott Storch give some curious clues as to what to expect for Dre's last and most anticipated body of solo work yet. According to Storch, the results heard thus far are overwhelming.
This is definitely a book to have. Aside from a few embarrassing typos (which made me wonder if I had been sent a working copy), I was really satisfied at the end of my read. This is probably as good as we're going to get until Detox hits the streets, at which point we won't need a biographer since the music will undoubtedly speak for itself.

the most curious part were these mysterious people who helped to mold and cultivate him before he ever met Dr. Dre. i wonder if they were the illuminati
Dope book.......2004-09-06
This book rocks. It gives tons of background on rap and Eminem and points out instances of incredible timing so you can really appreciate it...you get many, many actual quotes from Eminem and others...the author is sympathetic, not bashing, doesn't seem to have an agenda like so many others. I totally loved this book and am a HUGE Eminem fan. I would also recommend the book Angry Blonde by Eminem himself! He's the master. I LOVE YOU EMINEM!!
Extremely dissappointed.......2003-11-19
This is a deplorable piece of work from a sad, talentless hack. With any luck, this will be last time Nick Hasted is ever asked to write about important figures in music, such as Eminem, whom I love. He simply lacks the skill or flair required to tell the story in a pacy, engaging and believable fashion.
A lonesome child to a famous superstar.......2003-09-07
This book was a very interesting insight into the mind of Eminem. With thorough details into his childhood traumas and experiences with racism and bullying, you can begin to empathise with Eminem and understand the controversy of his lyrics and why he so extreme with his music. I enjoyed reading this book and now appreciate Eminem and his principles.
Real.......2003-06-20
This was my first book about his life and it is was very readable, looked precise and honest and I read it in 2 days -very quick read for my standards.
I'm 36 years old and I feel a bit strange to have this strong interest in Eminem but, you know...

Riveting and explosive, You Forgot About Dre is the story of a mentor and a protégé' who impact hip-hop music, with all the details of their success.

No new information.......2002-09-19
Don't get me wrong, I am a huge Dre and Eminem fan but this book isn't worth your money. It has little to no new information for fans who have spent a little bit of time and surfed the web for bios and such. For those who say this book is great because Dr. Dre is one of the best rappers on the planet, they are mistaken. Dr. Dre is not a rapper, he is a producer. I'm not dissing Dre and Eminem, but this book is poorly conducted, any 7th grader with the internet could have thrown this together in about a month or so. Save your money and read something informative.
Few interesting facts.......2002-05-05
I gave this book two stars because I think that the author could have done a better job writing it and looking for information. Although she tells the facts, the writing is too [disappointing]. The pictures in the middle are excellent, though. A little more effort and this book could have been excellent. Dr.Dre's story has a lot of interesting details, same as Eminem's.
dreem.......2001-09-09
fantastic. it tells about how N.W.A., dr. dre and eminem got started. it was an easy and interesting book to read. i recommend it to people that like rap but don't like to read that much.
I Luv Em. This book rocks!.......2001-01-14
I love Em and this book made me love him more. Read it and you will fall in love with him if you haven't already. It talks about how he started out and what he was like as a teenager and how he keeps it real and is not a fake. The pictures are so hot. It also tells you all about Dr. Dre and Snoop Doggy Dogg and a bunch of other rappers and that's good. But I love Eminem Marshall Mathers because he is the prince of hip-hop and I can't wait for his movies. He's gonna be the best actor Hollywood has ever seen. They might erase this but I hope he dosen't get back with Kimberly because I would marry him. When I read the book I pretended I was his girl and he was happy about that.
Most Complete.......2001-01-08
This is an excellent book. It's the only one out on Dre and the best one out on Eminem. If you want to know everything about two of the most talented rappers on the planet, get it. Nuff said.
Book Description
Like many hip-hop stars, Marshall Mathers III rapped about surviving prejudice and poverty in the inner city. Except Marshall was white. Growing up in a rough section of Detroit, Michigan, he often experienced prejudice because of his skin color. When he took to the stage as Eminem, he endured the same bigotry.
As a kid everyone from his teachers to his favorite uncle told him to give up his hip-hop dreams. He couldn't. It was the only thing he was good at. Before he became successful, he spent years working minimum wage jobs and hoping for his big break. Marshall's big break arrived with a character he created named Slim Shady who gained Marshall millions of fans but also gained him critics enraged by his lyrics.

Eminem.......2003-06-20
Very factual and interesting account of the life of Eminem. This is a must for all fans. I highly recommend the book.
Book Description
Emerging from a poor, stereotypically white-trash childhood in Detroit, this vengeful hip-hop devotee soon turned his anger into an art form and shot to global notoriety. Eminem has written two multi-platinum best-selling albums of surreally inventive, vicious, scattergun brilliance and become the world’s premier rapper and an icon for disaffected teenagers everywhere. Along the way, though, he’s been accused of homophobia, endorsing drug abuse, encouraging violence against women, and flirting with incarceration—a fate many see as inevitable for this psychologically flawed modern antihero. So where does Marshall Mathers end and Slim Shady begin? Who, in short, is this enigma — the person indubitably considered today’s most contradictory and controversial entertainer know as Eminem? Containing 60 fantastic full-color photographs, this illustrated biography is a celebration of the uniquely provocative and complex rapper who advises his young fans, “Don’t do drugs, have unprotected sex, or be violent—leave that to me.”

Great Product!.......2007-07-17
First of all the book is in excellent condition. The book itself is great! I loved reading it....I have had it for about 10 days now and I've already read it twice....cover to cover.
Definetly a must have item.
If it came with a 10 dollar bill, I'd pay 4 for it.......2006-04-13
If you have heard the songs on the albums covered, and ever read the album covers, save the ink trees and paper wasted on this lame caper. The lyrics and songs are full of misquotes, nothing novel or of note was wrote, paraphrasing the misheard words of spitfire rhymes I've heard a thousand times and apparently this punk "author" had transcribed. Other reviewers explained that is was a lame biography but showed stories that transpired that inspired the spirit of the lyrics you hear, but they obviously were as frightfully uninsightful as the writer. Let me save you the six bucks for the used with the truth: When it's slim spittin' about drugs, it's for fun and humor...When it's Em about family, it's addressin' the rumors...When it's a diss it's clear and every lyric is what your hear and means, love Em or hate `im, what is said verbatim.
A The Story of Eminem Through His Songs.......2004-02-15
The book has a great presentation and describes most of the songs Eminem appeared in or wrote. From his first album, Infinite, to the development of Slim Shady in the Slim Shady EP to getting picked up by Dr Dre in the Slim Shady LP to the other songs in Marshal Mathers and Eminem Show as well as collaborations and 8 Mile. Not really a bio, but a good compliment to his books.
I
<3 Eminem and this Book!!! ~Stephanie (15 yrs old).......2003-12-28
I really liked this book. It contains really good pictures of him. It has the reasons for why Eminem wrote all of the songs he did, from the Slim Shady EP, to the Slim Shady LP, to the Marshall Mathers LP, to the Eminem Show, to the 8 Mile soundtrack. It talks about struggles in his life with his mother, Debbie, and Kim. It also talks about his daugter, Hailie Jade. If you are expecting a book all about his life, though, then you shouldn't get this book because it basically describes the reasons for writing each song. I enjoyed this book and if you are a huge Eminem fan like I am, then I think that you will like this book too!!!

M ichel Faber is not only a master storyteller but a daring innovator as well. Here are the pitch-perfect prose, indelible characterizations, and deep empathy for which he has been highly acclaimed. In ÒAndy Comes Back,Ó a man awakens after a five-year coma, only to flee his home. In ÒThe Eyes of the Soul,Ó perpetual televised beauty replaces the derelict view from a suburban picture window. In ÒFinesse,Ó a dictator holds his surgeon’s family hostage to the outcome of a risky operation. These sixteen stories move from unspeakable sadness through moments of exquisitely distilled happiness.

Whiney Bodyguard!!!.......2004-09-23
This is an interesting book because of all the juicy details. It has some great pics that are just as juicy. The problem is that this Byron guy just whines throughout the whole book. He just got ran over by everyone in Eminem's crew, but sure stuck around for a long time! I mean, GET OVER IT! It's actually really funny how he complains throughout the whole thing. Anyone who is a true Eminem fan would like this book because of how much information you get. Keep in mind that the BIG BABY BYRON is probably exaggerating and making up half of the stuff, but the detail is awesome!!! I read the book in 1 day b/c I just wanted to know more and more! Buy this book despite the whiney, author who obviously sits around trying to get famous off of Eminem!
Shady Bizzness.......2003-02-12
Interesting book, though it definately skipped any type of editing process. I think Byron and Slim had a good relationship, but it was ruined by B.'s constant backstabbing and complaints about money. Them's the breaks, you paid the price. Byron portrays himself as a God-fearing man, but has a few things to learn about telling the truth (lying to his company about why he took leave). Good luck to you B.
Shady Bizzness.......2003-02-12
This book could have been good, but it definately needs editing.
I believe Byron was trying to be friends with MM, but griping
constantly behind his back about money ended any chance of that.
Byson tries to portray a religious man, but says that he lied to
his regular job about why he took leave (to work on the tour). I lost respect for him with that. Good luck though, Byron, just be straight with people, backstabbing will get you every time.
garbage.......2002-10-23
This book [stank]. I wish I would have saved my money. All Byron did was complain about money. He agreed to his compensation and then complained about it. He wanted to control how eminem spent his own money. That is the whole book. A grown man upset because he wasn't the famous one. His point in this book was "I am going to use eminem to get myself & my rap group famous." I wish I would have known that before I purchased this waste of paper.
The real EMINEM!!!.......2002-10-11
Eminem is talented I got to admit it but he sure have a big mouth and he his a coward, I didn't thought he was that sissy. He act like a little boy who give craps and dish everybody and go run behind his mommy but Eminem is a guy in his late 20 and go hide behind his bodyguards. It's a good book, you got to know the real Eminem but I had wish to know more about his family life and how he was when he was a kid, why he hate his mother so much, why he become such an angry person. The author say the F word a lot for someone who read his Bible all the time but who didn't say the F word?lol:)If you want to know more about Eminem buy this book it's one of the best book of him I had read yet!
