Out of the 13 short stories, I enjoyed 10 thoroughly. A great way to discover some authors I was unfamiliar with. A great investment.

4 out of 5 stars Funny and Tender.......2007-04-05

I bought this book because I'm an avid fan of Jennifer Weiner. As a result I have been introduced to the fun and whimsical writing of the other authors who contributed their short stories.
Each short story is engaging and very entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars Fun to read!!.......2006-11-10

The book was great- I dont usually like short stories but it was perfect for when I was working out or just needed a quick break from reality!

4 out of 5 stars Fun read most of the time.......2006-11-06

Most of the short stories were quite good and left me wanting to delve into the characters more; others not so much. Overall a good, light read.

4 out of 5 stars Women Authors.......2006-08-20

This was a great way to "sample" lots of new authors. The stories were well written, and I intend to read books by several of the authors, I enjoyed them so much.

Book Description

Master storyteller Robin McKinley here spins two new fairy tales and retells two cherished classics. All feature princesses touched with or by magic. There is Linadel, who lives in a kingdom next to Faerieland, where princesses are stolen away on their seventeenth birthdays-and Linadel's seventeenth birthday is tomorrow. And Korah, whose brother is bewitched by the magical Golden Hind; now it is up to her to break the spell. Rana must turn to a talking frog to help save her kingdom from the evil Aliyander. And then there are the twelve princesses, enspelled to dance through the soles of their shoes every night. . . . These are tales to read with delight!

5 out of 5 stars And they lived happily ever after.......2007-07-18

If you look for fantasy books described as "dark and sardonic" then this one is not for you. As other reviewers have noted, there is some darkness here. I didn't sense as much of that as other reviewers have. But, for me, all these stories end with warm fuzziness. I loved them. Who needs to buy dark and sardonic novels when you can read the morning newspaper and get plenty of that.

4 out of 5 stars Worth It for Last Tale, Which Is Incomparable!.......2007-06-05

While I have become quite a fan of McKinley's, these short tales didn't captivate me as much as I expected, EXCEPT for the last story in the book, about the 12 Dancing Princesses. There is an airy, aching melancholy about the soldier's point of view in this story which is truly affecting! I haven't been able to get it out of my mind for days now, and I have re-read parts of the story over and over. This tale makes the entire book worth your attention, whether you are a McKinley reader or not. The 3 other stories will help you pass a nice spring or summer lunch hour, and cause a wry grin or two (except for the 1st one, which is the weakest of the bunch...I couldn't even eke out a half-smile at the happy, sappy ending myself, & the story overall was too disjointed for me). But the last will have you feeling a more than just a bit bittersweet for a long while, whenever you chance to think about it.
I love it when an author is able to make her readers experience a moment or two of extraordinariness, in an otherwise ordinary day.

5 out of 5 stars Door in the Hedge.......2007-01-12

Well written and fun to read if you like imaginative books.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-01-10

I sincerely enjoyed this collection of short stories. I am a total sap for anthologies of short stories, and Robin McKinley is one of my all-time favorite authors. I must admit, however, that this is not my favorite group of short stories by her, but it was a great read.

4 out of 5 stars Next up.......2006-12-13

Not /quite/ as enthralling as "A Knot in the Grain", the next closest compendium of tales, or "Sunshine", McKinley's current Masterpiece, "The Door in the Hedge" is by no means to be overlooked.

As always, touched with the author's characteristic Fairy Tale style, but written to immerse any but the most casual of readers, each tale in this book stands well on its own, but taken together makes for quite an interesting read!

Filled with interesting, and rather original tales even if two are simply reworked, this book makes a must have addition to any Robin McKinley fan.

Why do we have to go to the museum anyway? That sounds like a boring field trip! You have probably said it yourself. A museum isn't as much fun as going to a water park, stadium or a state park. What lies within the museum's walls have a history all their own. Lee Bennett Hopkins has selected a wide range of poems about museums in this collection. "Behind the Museum Door" talks about things like a suit of armor, mummies, Native Americans, forms of art and a whole bunch more.

Stacey Dressen-Mc Queen has brought every poem to life with her bright colors and children smiling and enjoying each part of the museum. "Behind the Museum Door" would be a great addition to primary-grade classrooms to help introduce the children to a museum experience before going on a field trip. This book is written for younger kids than this reviewer but it's an enjoyable book for young children.

You never know what exciting things can lie within the museum walls. Reading the book "Behind the Museum Door" is almost as much fun as discovering what lies behind the museum's door.

Behind the Museum Door: Poems to Celebrate the Wonders of Museums is a hodgepodge of poems written by such diverse and lauded individuals as Jane Yolen, Myra Cohn Livingston, and Rebecca Kai Dotlich, and illustrated with unforgettable acrylic and oil pastel artwork by award-winning artist Stacey Dessen-McQueen, all celebrating the treasury of knowledge, wisdom and wonder in museums. Each two-page spread features a different poem and theme, in this lovely read-aloud anthology that makes the perfect souvenir for a child's museum visit. "Stirring Art: Beauty / suspended in / suspense. // A breath of air / awakens / lifeless form - // See / it / dance."

Behind the museum door: poems to celebrate the wonders of museums
Selected by Lee Bennett Hopkins and illustrated by Stacey Dressen-McQueen.

Previously published and new poems by the likes of Myra Cohn Livingston, Lilian Moore, Jane Yolen, and J. Patrick Lewis celebrate the many treasures found in museums. Lee Bennett Hopkins starts with his poem, Behind the Museum Door that lists some of these treasures: "Ancient necklaces, African art, armor of knights, a peasant cart", and all these objects are vibrantly illustrated in a two-page spread.

Beverly McLoughland in her poem, Suit of Armor pens:

In its human shape
of molded steel,
It looks as though
There's someone real
Inside. You Knock:
"Hello in there,"
And hear a dull
Echo of air
As though a voice
Were drifting through
The lonely centuries
To you.

A girl stares wonderingly at the suit of armor and in the background a knight on a horse fights a dragon.

Another poem, Stirring Art shows multicultural children dancing underneath a mobile.

Beauty
suspended in
suspence.

A breath of air
Awakens
Lifeless form--

See
it
dance.

O Trilobite by Alice Schertle is an ode to these little microscopic creatures. She begins her poem with:

O trilobite, there are a few,
here in the Fossil Room, of you.
Once billions strong you ruled the sea,
A Cambrian Age majority.

Trilobites swim across a dark page surrounding the words that are set against a teal background. Multicultural children, although their facial expressions are not very distinctive from one another, reveal in posture their pleasure as they point excitedly to exhibits; some children hold hands or stand with their arms across the shoulders of their friends. These twelve poems encourage an appreciation for the wonders of museums. They can be read aloud, however; there often is a bit of clutter in the illustrations that requires closer examination.

Book Description

These are not your mother's fairy tales...

Did you ever wonder how the dwarves felt after Snow White ditched them for the prince? Do you sometimes wish Cinderella hadn't been so helpless and petite? Are you ready to hear the Giant's point of view on Jack and his beanstalk? Then this is the book for you.

Thirteen award-winning fantasy and science fiction writers offer up their versions of these classic fairy tales as well as other favorites, including The Ugly Duckling, Ali Baba, Hansel and Gretel, and more. Some of the stories are funny, some are strange, and others are dark and disturbing -- but each offers something as unexpected as a wolf at the door.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Reinvented Fairy Tales.......2007-07-03

Classic fairy tales are retold from another point of view. Embodiments of the months grant Liz good luck. Cinderella is a plump birdwatcher who isn't particularly interested in marrying a prince. Jack and the Beanstalk is retold from the point of view of the giants, who don't appreciate a human stealing from them. The goose girl's horse tells her story, which ends up happier for the horse than the original.

A wolf comes to stay at Glasina's house, and she soon comes to suspect that it is really a human in wolf's form. Ali Baba is tired of his nickname, but then his life starts to mirror the legend when he follows aliens to an abandoned mine with a secret door.

Emma's stepmother turned her brothers into swans for being too loud. Emma thinks she can probably turn them back, but she isn't sure whether she likes them better as swans or not. Rosa's parents loved each other so much, they dissolved together into water. Rosa's sisters are resentful, but Rosa is happy for them.

Hansel and Gretel are lured in by a witch to a shop full of video games and fun things. Charise feels like an ugly duckling, smart and friendless in school. Is the offer for her to attend a prestigious private school her opportunity to finally turn into a swan?

After Snow White is gone, the seven dwarves are lost, unsure of how to continue with their lives. Val, a soldier, answers a king's call to help him figure out what is going on with his daughters, who sleep all day and seem to party all night.

I liked the creative twists on these fairy tales, and the updates that made them seem a bit more realistic.

3 out of 5 stars Was looking for a bit more.......2006-08-28

Overall, I found this collection well-written and pleasant. However, the stories were a bit too concise, and I felt some of the writers could have gone a little further in their exploration of the tale they chose to re-write. My favorite work in the book was 'Instructions' by Neil Gaiman. Even though this wasn't a retelling of an old story, it fit in the collection nicely.

I don't regret the purchase, but I wish the stories had been a bit more robust.

4 out of 5 stars A Wolf at the door.......2006-06-22

A Wolf at the Door has stories like Cinderelephant, Swans, The Twelve Dancing Princesses and more. I liked all of them. If you like stories that are a little gross and funny, than I think you would like this book. In Swans, Emma's mother dies and her stepmother can not stand noise, so when Emma's brothers get turned into swans because of their noise, it is up to Emma to save her brothers. Also in the Twelve Dancing Princesses, twelve princesses, all named after flowers, secretly sneek out every night and dance with dead princes who they will soon marry. The king, the princesses father, is asking men all over town to tell the king what is happenning to his daughers at night. Will a man be brave enough to go to the under world to find out? Read A Wolf at the Door to find out.

4 out of 5 stars Retold Fairy Tales Strike Again! :).......2005-04-24

This collection of stories includes:
The Months of Manhatten by Delia Sherman
Done in the tradition of the good sister being rewarded over the bad one this story is set in New York. The good sister finds a painting of twelve people who question her about the seasons and such. She responds favorably to all the months which gains her good luck. When her stepsister tries, she tells the months that she doesn't like any of the months in New York. She is cursed with bad luck. Eventually she turns repentant and makes the sisters grow closer.

Cinder Elephant by Jane Yolen
Elanor is not a skinny girl like her two stepsisters but she is good and kind. Also she knows a lot about sports. Through the help of her bluebird friends, Elanor is able to attend the ball where the prince and she (grammar?) discover they have a lot in common. The moral at the end of story appears as such: "Moral: If you love a waist, you waste a love." (pg. 28) Very well put indeed!

Instructions by Neil Gaiman
This bears reading over which I haven't done. It's a list of instructions on what to do and not do when in a fairy tale. Such advice includes: "You may pick strawberries in December's frost," and "Know that diamonds and roses are as uncomfortable when they tumble from one's lips as toads and frogs:..." (pgs. 31-32) Very nice to read.

Mrs. Big: "Jack and the Beanstalk" Retold by Michael Cadnum
Poor Mrs. Big! Her husband fell off the clouds where their home was built chasing after Jack because he thought Jack had hurt his wife! Mrs. Big wasn't too thrilled with the house in the clouds even though they bought it; you could step off at the wrong place and that's exactly what poor Mr. Big did! But Mrs. Big gets her revenge!

Falada: The Goose Girl's Horse
Falada is a fairy horse sent out in the real world as an unjust punishment. Although his mission is to deliver a princess safely to another kingdom he seems to fail. Sure, she arrives in the kingdom but a wicked goblin has taken her place as princess. Little does Falada know that another horse also has a task to fufill!

A Wolf at the Door by Tanith Lee
Glasina spent time mostly with her mother and father. Still there were the lions around (who had learned to say Hallo, wot ya got?  ) and the scary wolves. Glasina was content until one day she met a wolf that could speak more than most animals. She led him back to the house where he proceeded to stay with the father and daughter (the mother was out) and cause disorder. He was a very untidy house guest. Finally the father realized that perhaps he was a human in disguise. But would Glasina have to kiss him and marry him? She wanted to go to college! Was there any other way of having the wolf turn back into a human? Clever read.

Ali Baba and the Forty Aliens by Janeen Webb
There were lots of abandoned mines where Al lived and he would wander among them. One day he saw one that wasn't quite right. Soon he saw aliens using it! When he learned how to enter it he discovered some gold. Even though he was not greedy his brother was...

Swans by Kelly Link
Emma's stepmother is highly unusual. She can't stand noise and when she can't take it any more she turns the offenders to swans. That's how Emma becomes surrounded by swans in her school. Emma is safe from becoming a swan as she won't talk ever since her mother died. But what should she do to change them all back into humans?

The Kingdom of Melting Glance by Katherine Vaz
Perhaps the most confusing story out of the collection, this story is based on a Portueguese story. Rosa feels all alone in the world, with only a bird as a friend. Pehaps, like her parents, she and the bird can merge into the world and forget their present lives.

Hansel's Eyes by Garth Nix
Most definitely the most gruesome of the stories. Hansel and Gretal are left in an abandoned part of a city by their parents. Distracted by a video game store they go in only to have Hansel entranced in a game and a witch giving Gretal the option to become her apprentice or also die and Hansel may eventually. The witch cannot see and has a "stichling" do it for her. I think she gets her strength from murdering children. In the end, Gretal has more powers than she started out with and Hansel only has one of his original eyes.

Becoming Charise by Kathe Koja
Charise is a very smart girl but doesn't have the opportunities that some have. She doesn't seem to fit in any social group either. She must learn to accept her situation and that no matter where she is she can make it.

The Seven Stage a Comeback by Gregory Maguire
A story about what happens after Snow White leaves from the perspective of the dwarves. They decide to go after her and bring her back by force but when they see something they change their minds.

The Twelve Dancing Princesses by Patricia A. McKillip
A traditional retelling of the story except that the older princess plays a more prominent role. Also the princesses are under a curse making them dance with the undead. OK, perhaps it's not so traditional afterall.

5 out of 5 stars Wolf at the door.......2004-04-19

This book, the wolf at the Door, has tons of fairy tails in them. It has The Months of Manhattan, Cinder Elephant, the Twelve Dancing Princesses, and other amazing stories.
Let's start with The Wolf at the Door. This fairy tail is about a wolf that is at the door. It comes at night and is very creepy with his bright yellow glowing eyes and his fangs as white as snow. He is gray all over. This one part was when the wolf thought he was supposed to be human. It was funny.
The Twelve dancing princesses were funny too. They are twelve daughters of the king. Every night, the king finds there brand new shoes worn-out. So he hires men to find there daughters secret. They seem to be going somewhere at night. In the beginning, there is this pore man, and he has little food. This old lady comes by and asks him if she can have some food because she is very hungry and hasn't eaten in days. He does share the food with her. All of a sudden, it becomes a big feast. She has magical powers. She tells the man that there is a king who wants a man to help him find where the princesses are going. And that's when the journey begins.
My favorite part in The Tewlve dancing princesses is

5 out of 5 stars All The Best Doors Tunes.......2006-04-15

I'd like to first point out, that reviews for both the 'Guitar Recorded Version' guitar tablature compilation of 'Doors Anthology', and the vocal/piano/guitar chord version of 'Doors Anthology' - are conjoined herein Amazon under both titles. However, both titles are clearly different in content, albeit sharing the same name.

While one reviewer states this title contains selections from "Other Voices", know that the 'Guitar Recorded Version' most certainly does not. For the similar-in-appearance-and-name piano/vocal/guitar chord 'Doors Anthology' of 69 tunes, does contain selections from the post-Morrison "Other Voices". While the 'Guitar Recorded Version' compilation contains only 20 tunes - all original Doors.

And all but two songs in the 'Guitar Recorded Version' compilation, 'Love Street' and 'Blue Sunday', can be found on the 'Legacy: Absolute Best' 2-CD set.

Robbie Krieger contributed greatly to the Doors. His guitar style and fretboard sensibility was crucial to the Doors success. And the 'Guitar Recorded Version' is well written and accurate. While the piano/vocal/guitar chord version of this title is unsuitable for learning Krieger's guitar parts. The 'Guitar Recorded Version' is about 140 pages, while the piano book is about 400 pages. And the 'Easy Tab' version is another animal as well. But I never recommend 'Easy Tab' versions of anything.

So, order carefully.

Contents of 'Guitar Recorded Version': Blue Sunday, Break On Through To The Other Side, Crystal Ship, Five To One, Hello I Love You, L.A. Woman, Light My Fire, Love Her Madly, Love Me Two Times, Love Street, Not To Touch The Earth, People Are Strange, Riders On The Storm, Roadhouse Blues, Soul Kitchen, Spanish Caravan, Touch Me, Twentieth Century Fox, The Unknown Soldier, You Make Me Real

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Songbook.......2002-01-04

The Hal Leonard Company really did an excellent job in putting together this songbook. Most if not all of the music in this book is letter accurate. Many of the songs have the solos written out so a keyboard player does not have to work very hard. Light My Fire is a rare exception but I doubt any source would ellaborate on the four minute instrumental solo.

What's interesting here is that songs from the Other Voices LP are included in this songbook. Other Voices is the first Doors record that was released after Jim Morrison died. It features the vocals of Robbie Kreiger and Ray Manzarek. Too bad that record is so difficult to find. Also included are stories about the Doors music/recording history as well as an interview with Robbie Krieger.

Overall an excellent resource for musicians who like the Doors.

    Book Description

Here are strange, beautiful stories covering the full spectrum of the late Roger Zelazny's remarkable talents. He had a rare ability to mix the dream-like, disturbing imagery of fantasy with the real-life hardware of science fiction. His vivid imagination and fine prose made him one of the most highly acclaimed writers in his field. Three times he won the Nebula Award, and six times the Hugo Award, for excellence in novels and short fiction. Roger Zelazny possessed a unique, dazzling talent; his visions of the future, of other worlds and of other realities are, by turns, enchanting and disturbing, and always memorable.

    4 out of 5 stars Ideas Galore.......2007-09-23

The story that stays with me is "Love Is An Imaginary Number." It is only 5 or 6 pages long, but it spawned at least a dozen novels!

The germ of the idea for the whole "Amber" series is here, that of the person who suddenly comes to realize his true abilities and "shifts" at will, shaping reality as he goes. The ending encapsulates "Lord Of Light" about the man who wants to give technology to the masses -- Prometheus.

"Lord of Light" has been one of my top-ten SF novels forever. ("Many kilowatts of prayer had he offered, but static kept him from being heard on high.") Yet I never saw Sam as Prometheus until now, probably because the setting is so un-Greek.

I can see it, a 600-level humanities course. "Your assignment this weekend is to read 'Nine Princes in Amber' and 'Lord of Light.'" Then on Monday, give them a 3-page handout of "Love Is An Imaginary Number" and have them compose an essay tracing the similarities and differences.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisitely crafted tales of fantastic alternate realities.......2005-07-24

"The Doors of His Face, the Lamps of His Mouth," by Roger Zelazny, is a collection of 17 science fiction tales that range in length from two to 88 pages. Altogether the collection is over 500 pages long. Some of the most striking selections in the book are as follows.

"The Keys to December": A group of bioengineered intelligent beings seek to re-shape a planet in order to suit their unique needs, but the massive project has some unintended--and ethically challenging--consequences. "Devil Car": In a future where cars have artificial intelligence, a human and his heavily armored vehicle embark on a mission to hunt down a killer rogue car. "This Moment of the Storm" takes place in a human colony on the planet Tierra del Cygnus, a world of monstrous beasts and dangerous weather. This story's main character is almost 600 years old, but has spent most of his life "sleeping" during long interstellar space voyages. In the quirky "A Museum Piece," an unappreciated artist decides to live in a museum, posing as a statue--thus becoming a living work of art. "Divine Madness" is a stunning tale about a man suffering from a condition in which time seems to be moving backwards. And the book's title story tells of a quest to catch a gigantic sea monster on the planet Venus.

Zelazny has crafted some remarkable gems in this collection. These stories, while clearly in the great tradition of science fiction, often have the flavors of myth, fantasy, and folklore. Zelazny's prose is truly a sumptuous banquet; his style is extremely literate and learned, with a crisp, clean elegance. He weaves many cultural references into his writing; along the way he cites Dante, "Aida," Dylan Thomas, Miniver Cheevy, the Iliad, Poe, Havelock Ellis, Vishnu, Rimbaud, and more. Such references strike me as an integral and intriguing part of Zelazny's style.

Zelazny succeeds in marrying strong science fiction concepts and settings to some really "down-to-earth" emotions and situations. He creates well drawn characters, and is skilled at fashioning alternate worlds and cultures. The stories touch on many powerful and resonant themes: love, loss, religion, crime, the passage of time, man's relationship to technology, the desire for a home, etc. Lovers of serious literary science fiction should not miss this fine collection by a truly gifted prose stylist.

4 out of 5 stars Early Zelazny at his best.......2003-02-08

From his career's inception, Zelazny had a distinctive style: fast, poetic, allusive and dense sometimes to the point of being a trifle obscure. Characterization was one of his strengths. He also had a deft way with mythological reference: he wove it into his stories, either symbolically (e.g., in "He Who Shapes") or by science fictional means, as in his novel _This Immortal_. Early and late, the story rather than the novel seems to have been his true metier.

In this collection of early stories, we see a nice harvest from the first 5 years of Zelazny's career. A goodly number of the best stories he wrote between 1962 and 1968 are included.

The whole book makes for pleasant reading, but I'd single out the following stories as being particularly worthy: "The Man Who Loved the Faoli," "This Mortal Mountain," and "This Moment of the Storm," the classic "A Rose for Ecclesiastes," and of course, the title story.

One of the mild peculiarities of Zelazny's collections is that stories he wrote at the beginning of his career are spread across a number of books, where they may in many cases be found side-by-side with later work. A reader wishing to explore his early short stories can't go to a single book.

The early stories span 4 collections: this book, and _Four for Tomorrow_, _The Last Defender of Camelot_, and at least one story ("But Not the Herald") in the book _Unicorn Variations_. A reader taken with Zelazny's early work should search out these collections for that reason alone.

(Note that a number of later stories are also worthy.)

Of the early work excluded from this volume, I'd single out "He Who Shapes," "The Graveyard Heart," "The Furies," and "For a Breath I Tarry" as the stories worth a look.

Although Zelazny's work has become widely available, there is a need for a _Collected Stories_. Such a compendium could put his work into historical context, as well as provide access to some stories not widely available or in some cases never reprinted.

Until such a publishing event occurs (knock on wood), we've got the story collections he published himself, for which we should feel gratitude.

(4.5 stars. "He Who Shapes" and "For a Breath I Tarry" would have made it 5.)

    *****
An addendum much later: The iBooks edition of this book differs from the original book issued by Doubleday, in that the iBooks edition is enlarged to include several stories not in the original collection, among them "The Graveyard Heart" and "The Furies."

Using the same title for the collection will cause a certain amount of headache for collectors.

5 out of 5 stars Almost all the Zelazny U'll ever need...........2002-08-20

This is the best single-author collection ever. From "The Doors of His Face, the Lamps of His Mouth" to "This Mortal Mountain," "This Moment of the Storm," "The Man Who Loved the Faoli," & "Lucifer," this is Zelazny at his absolute BEST. If only "For a Breath I Tarry," "Permafrost" & "He Who Shapes" were here, U wouldn't need NE other Zelazny books. This stuff puts his AMBER novels totally out 2 pasture. This guy was brilliant, & if U haven't read his stuff, U've got some catching up 2 do. Start anywhere, U won't B sorry....

5 out of 5 stars Great stories, terrible editing.......2001-12-17

I'm thrilled that ibooks is releasing a series of Roger Zelazny's works, but if this volume is any indication they need to do a much better job of editing. Among the many typographical errors in these exceptional SF stories is this gem from the Bible as quoted in Zelazny's classic short story, A Rose for Ecclesiastes: "...vanity of vanities; all IF vanity" (page 132). I almost lost my suspension of disbelief! Please, ibooks, if it's worth doing, it's worth doing right.

The great fourteenth-century Persian poet Hafiz is noted for his mystical love poems. The poetry of Hafiz has reached new heights of popularity in the West, yet his poems have been translatred into European languages for over two hundred years. Hafiz is not a poet to be captured in a single translation. This modernised edition of McCarthy's elegant prose translation gives us a direct Hafiz, full of clear imagery and personal poetry.
