Book Description
Todd R. Clear, one of the country's leading experts in the study of corrections, George F. Cole, considered by many as the 'founding father' of modern criminal justice study, and new co-author Michael D. Reisig, combine talents for the new Seventh Edition of the market-leading AMERICAN CORRECTIONS. A great author team, Clear's expertise in corrections complements Cole's organizational view of the system and fresh perspectives offered by Reisig. Together, they present a well-rounded, balanced approach to corrections. AMERICAN CORRECTIONS, Seventh Edition takes a sociological and humanistic approach to corrections. The text treats institutional and community sanctions in a balanced fashion and offers a look at the system from the perspective of both the corrections worker and the offender. It also presents the concept of corrections as a "system" of interconnected organizations and carries this theme throughout the book. From a more practical standpoint, many find this text appealing because it provides comprehensive coverage without overwhelming students. At 22 chapters and 592 pages, it is very compatible with standard semester-long courses.
Customer Reviews:
Great corrections book.......2006-02-02
I've taught college-level corrections courses for quite a few years now and have kicked around a number of different corrections texts. This new edition is definitely an improvement over previous ones--it's much heavier on the recent empirical research, which helps me to keep my students "on track" with what the actual research indicates regarding a number of correctional topics.
I do have some students who may take issue with the authors' discussion on certain subjects (much like one of the reviewers here), yet much of their dissatisfaction is likely to arise out of their disappointment that the reality of corrections is different from their preconceived ideas of what corrections "should" be about (in general, such dissatisfaction is expressed by my younger, more close-minded, right-wing zealot students who have a long way to go before they're capable of thinking critically).
In short, it's a great corrections text. It might be a bit lengthy for a single course on a quarter system, but if you're teaching on a semester system it's great because you won't need to hoist a bunch of supplementary materials/books onto your students (this edition is more than enough to last you a full semester).
Review of American Corrections, 7th Edition.......2006-02-01
Clear, Cole, & Reisig present a thorough overview of classic and historical correctional philosophy that is strongly tied to their discussion of more contemporary issues. Each revision includes the most up to date, critically acclaimed research from top criminology journals. Additionally, they regularly cite the best government sources (such as the Bureau of Justice Statistics and the Federal Bureau of Prisons) to support various claims. In sum, this is a fair and balanced approach to all of the important issues facing corrections. I have taught Corrections for many years, and would not consider using a book other than American Corrections.
Worst Criminal Justice Textbook I've ever read.......2005-11-10
The name of this book should be 'The Overly-Liberal, Bleeding-Heart View of Corrections'. This was by far the worst criminal justice textbook that I have ever read. I expect textbooks for classes to give the facts and be somewhat unbiased. This book gave a VERY one-sided view which portrayed anyone that is convicted of a crime to be the actual victim; all the way from investigation to parole. This view would have been fine if it had been countered with the other side as well. I was very disappointed. I read it from from front to cover, and it was brutal. This should be a book on opinion, instead of a textbook.
American Corrections Excellent.......2005-09-17
Excellent shipping, Book in Great Condtion, would definately do buisness with again A++++++++

Book Description
This latest edition in the highly respected Swokowski/Cole precalculus series retains the elements that have made it so popular with instructors and students alike: its exposition is clear, the time-tested exercise sets feature a variety of applications, its uncluttered layout is appealing, and the difficulty level of problems is appropriate and consistent. Mathematically sound, ALGEBRA AND TRIGONOMETRY WITH ANALYTIC GEOMETRY, Eleventh Edition, effectively prepares students for further courses in mathematics through its excellent, time-tested problem sets. This edition has been improved in many respects, including the addition of technology inserts with specific keystrokes for the TI-83 Plus and the TI-86, ideal for students who are working with a calculator for the first time. The design of the text makes the technology inserts easily identifiable, so if a professor prefers to skip these sections it is simple to do so.

Customer Reviews:
New Sibling.......2007-08-01
I got this for my grandson before he became a Big Brother. He loved it.
My son loves this book.......2007-06-08
My nearly three year old loves this book--I find him quoting lines out of it when he talks about our new baby on the way. The text and illustrations are simple enough for him to understand and hold his interest. It is very positive and doesn't bring up jealousy issues but rather emphasizes all the good things about being an older sibling. If you are expecting and are trying to prepare your little one for the upcoming arrival then I do recommend this book.
2.5 year old loves this book!.......2007-05-21
My son loves this book, and it's illustrations. Both of us love Falwell's We have a baby, but this is a good companion to that for any expectant or newly additioned family. I like that this is "big brother" specific, as that is a special title to the only boy in our family who is quite used to being the baby, lol. A good buy.
Cute and New-Classic Children's Book.......2007-03-13
This book is a perfect fit for the age group specified, and I am very pleased after purchasing it for my nephew after the birth of a baby brother. The pictures are very detailed and colorful, and the illustrator is wonderful. The story is not too long, and not too simplified to be boring for parents to read over and over again.
Sweet Book for Preparing Tots for Baby Siblings!.......2007-03-09
I bought this book for my nephew, who's getting a baby brother this spring. I liked the gentle tone of the book, the fact that it shows Dad doing parenting chores, the fact that it doesn't establish the gender of the new baby, allowing you as the reader to use that as a discussion point (or not), etc. The book would best be used as a jumping-off point for talks about what a new baby in the house means: i.e., "this page shows the baby sleeping in a crib. You slept in a crib when you were a baby. Now you have a big-boy bed, right?" or however you want to handle it. Each page could be used like that, if you wanted to, a few weeks apart, to give the child more time for processing and asking questions. (Caveat: If you're in a single-parent, two-mommy, or two-daddy household, you might get questions about who the second parent is in the picture.)

Book Description
Churches have tried all kinds of ways to attract new and younger members - revised vision statements, hipper worship, contemporary music, livelier sermons, bigger and better auditoriums. But there are still so many people who aren't being reached, who don't want to come to church. And the truth is that attendance at church on Sundays does not necessarily transform lives; God's presence in our hearts is what changes us. Leaders and laypeople everywhere are realizing that they need new and more powerful ways to help them spread God's Word. According to international church starter and pastor Neil Cole, if we want to connect with young people and those who are not coming to church, we must go where people congregate. Cole shows readers how to plant the seeds of the Kingdom of God in the places where life happens and where culture is formed - restaurants, bars, coffeehouses, parks, locker rooms, and neighborhoods. Organic Church offers a hands-on guide for demystifying this new model of church and shows the practical aspects of implementing it.

Four star review.......2007-08-27
Haven't read the book yet but leafing through it it looks good and attention holding...
Really real - and really effective .......2007-07-23
I saw organic church on a bookshelf a couple of years ago. I avoided it because of the title (remember don't judge a book by it's cover?). It seemed a little trendy - maybe even too pop culture. I was looking for some good discipleship material when I came across another book that I had read by Neil Cole (author). When I discovered that this was the same author of Organic Church, I thought that I would give it a quick read.
Organic Church was maybe the best book that I have ever read! It connected the book of Acts with the 21st century. It was inspiring and innovative. And it has put me in a postition to reconsider what it means to be a disciple and to make disciples. It is a very honest and very realistic look at church as we know it. It exposes the weakness in the church, and doesn't hide it's own weaknesses. It is not theoretic, analytic, or synthetic - it's just real - natural. It ends up that being organic means being effective.
What makes a church?.......2007-05-18
I enjoyed Cole's thinking outside the pizza box, his passion for evangelism, and his rather sound explanations of new testament era churches. He does a good job in explaining the biblical idea about the priesthood of believers. I liked the critical thinking about engaging the culture.
But, What makes a church?
It didn't go into much detail about the individual churches themselves, how they are structured, or what makes them definably different than a traditional small group. It read as if any small group of people that organized themselves would have been called a church. Perhaps he lays out further development somewhere and I've not yet come across it.
I'm not sure what separates these little churches from small groups disconnected from a church. He doesn't interact with the rich theological history of the marks of a church, which in my confessional tradition (Presbyterian) are
1. The pure preaching of the Word of God as sound doctrine,
2. Administration of the sacraments,
3. The exercise of discipline
The point here is not to debate tradition, the validity of how many marks define the church visible or invisible, but rather how to blend the material in the book into the richness of good sound theological tradition.
Pastor Chris
Touching the Heart of the matter.......2007-05-12
This book is awesome. I am a connoisseur of faith in Jesus having started churches and or served in a variety of capacities for more years than I can remember. I've always puzzled over our present western practice of church and the visible practice of church in its origination. What we read in the New Testament is more like a release of a plague of God spreading eveywhere, delivered in power from believer to unbeliever in live demonstrations of the Ascended Jesus.
Finally - a 'go to'model of Jesus that is free to once again spread the life of Christ in a plague like viral fashion, unencumbered by grasps of men for control and power and to make a name for themselves - "Look at me, I'm king of the hill." Church as a business is one of the most foolish concepts we've ever adopted.
Read this book. It will ruin you if you let it. And then you can get on with serving Christ and not something else. It's possible if the western church doesn't go this way by choice, it may still end up going this way, but by some other means. Either way, the model may well be the most correct I've seen, and the most viral in bringing "the Cure" to our fellow diseased travelers here on planet earth.
A Model for The Great Commission.......2007-03-21
Over 10 years ago I attended a "Superconference" in Reno, NV where a young pastor named Neil Cole shared a revolutionary concept called Life Transformation Groups (LTG's). I was so impressed with his simple concept that I began to use them in my own church and my own life and have been in one nearly continuously for all of the intervening years. I have watched it transform my life and that of every person I discipled that remained committed to it for any length of time.
Some 5 years ago I had a professor in seminary named Dr. Thom Wolfe. Just as Neil Cole describes in his book, Thom shared the Universal Disciple/ Church on a napkin in Starbucks (his favorite place).
At the time I met him Neil was pastoring a growing church in Southern California and his commitment to scripture and the priesthood of all believers showed in every way. At the time I met him Thom Wolfe was Chair of the Kim School of Intercultural Studies at Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary. Today both men are successfully planting churches and making disciples in large numbers. Neil is in the USA and Thom is Central Asia.
Some have written reviews critical of the methods described in the book or written as if Cole is attacking the way church is done in general. This is a point, but it is not his primary point. The proof is in the doing. The methods described in this book are solidly biblical, coming primarily from Paul's model of church as found in Colossians 3-4 and in other places. Unfortunately, Cole does not share Wolfe's actual drawing (I will email it to anyone who asks). I have often wondered how Paul could go into Thessalonica for two weeks and leave a thriving church behind. That question is answered in these pages.
Though I dearly love Neil, I have to drop this review to four stars because I think that his message about how to do church in a way that reproduces rapidly and easily gets lost in his sometime polemic against the established church. This is clear in so many reviews that have missed the main point of the book. Yet, every Christian can still benefit by reading this book with an open mind. I strongly encourage you to do so.

It works!.......2007-09-18
We bought this book for my daughter when she was 13 months old. We read it frequently to her but never knew if she really understood what the whole "new baby at our house" concept really meant. The day day her baby sister was born when she was 18 months old we read the book to her and on the page that says "someone new is at our house, do you know who it is?" she immediately pointed to her new sister. We were so excited to realize that this book had taught her the concept of being a big sister even though she was so young. I highly recommend this book.
I like it!.......2007-08-23
When my son was born, he gave this book to my toddler. It really doesn't hold her interest but I think it is a worth while book! I love the illustrations.
Great book.......2007-08-23
Out of all the big sister books I bought for my daughter when we were expecting #2, this one I think is her favorite. Great illustrations and explanations on a child level. Great book.
Excellent for "Big Sisters" !!!!.......2007-08-07
This book is so wonderful! We started reading this book to our 2 year old at about 1 month before the baby was born! She LOVED the book and after reading this book she would carry it around the house. She kept on commenting that she was going to have a baby. When baby finally came, she was so excited to tell her that she was the "big sister"!
The baby is now 15 months old and my now 3 year old still loves to read the book and actively particippates and helps Mommy with the baby because she's a "big sister"!
The book talks about something new in our house, a baby. The baby in the book seems to be gender neutral which makes it convenient if you're expecting either a new girl or new boy. There are also some helpful tips for parents on the final page of the book. We highly recommend this book which is an easy read for your toddler.
I'm a Big Sister.......2007-04-05
Good Book. It is wonderful at introducing the concept of a new baby being in the house to a sibling. But this book also emphasizes that the sibling is still special to the parents and it is good to be an older sibling.

Book Description
Larkin Conner Barkley lives like the City of Angels is hers for the taking. Young and staggeringly rich, she speeds through the city during its loneliest hours, blowing through red after red in her Aston Martin as if running for her life. Until out of nowhere a car appears, and with it the metal-on-metal explosion of a terrible accident. Dazed, Larkin attempts to help the other victims. And finds herself the sole witness in a secret federal investigation.
For maybe the first time in her life, Larkin wants to do the right thing. But by agreeing to cooperate with the authorities, she becomes the target for a relentless team of killers. And when the U.S. Marshals and the finest security money can buy can't protect her, Larkin's wealthy family turns to the one man money can't buy - Joe Pike.
Pike lives a world away from the palaces of Beverly Hills. He's an ex-cop, ex-Marine, ex-mercenary who owes a bad man a favor, and that favor is to keep Larkin alive. The one upside of the job is reuniting with Bud Flynn, Pike's LAPD training officer, and a man Pike reveres as a father. The downside is Larkin Barkley, who is the uncontrollable cover girl for self-destruction - and as deeply alone as Pike.
Pike commits himself to protecting the girl, but when they immediately come under fire, he realizes someone is selling them out. In defiance of Bud and the authorities, Pike drops off the grid with the girl and follows his own rules of survival: strike fast, hit hard, hunt down the hunters. With the help of private investigator Elvis Cole, Pike uncovers a web of lies and betrayals, and the stunning revelation that even the cops are not who they seem. As the body count rises, Pike's biggest threat might come from the girl herself, a lost soul in the City of Angels, determined to destroy herself unless Joe Pike can teach her the value of life
and love.
Customer Reviews:
Righteous Thriller.......2007-10-01
The Watchman is a superior thriller that kicks off as if you're in the middle of a tension-filled scene, and doesn't let up on the thrills and suspense until the very last pages. Crais knows how to keep the dialogue light, the action lean, and still sprinkle the whole book with healthy doses of humor.
Read the other reviewers' plot summaries if you want. I'm keeping this review lean, mean, and to the point. Like Joe Pike.
Recommended.
Highly.
DIVING INTO ADVENTURE IN THE PIKE POSITION.......2007-09-22
Joe Pike, silent partner in the Elvis Cole Detective Agency, takes center stage in this well orchestrated offering from Robert Crais, with Elvis Cole stepping into an important albeit "supporting role". For those who have followed the "strong, silent, mysterious Pike" through various Elvis Cole books.....we are finally offered a glimpse at Joe's military experiences, his time as an L.A.P.D. cop, and his relationship with his father. Joe may not be a guy brimming with emotion, but his quiet nature is perfectly fitted for this compelling character.
Recommended by his old police force partner Bud Flynn, Joe is hired to protect Larkin Barkley, the beautiful, spoiled and largely ignored daughter of a real estate tycoon. Joe must utilize all of his accumulated training and experience (as well as his Colt Python and Kimber) to keep both he and Larkin out of the reaches of assassins as well as government agents.
During the first few chapters of the book, I was so aggravated with the shallowness of the Larkin character, that I could have killed her myself.....or at least slapped the daylights out of her. (Crais must have used the antics of Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan and Brittany Spears for inspiration when developing this character). As the book progresses, Larkins behaviour is modified and the reader, like Pike and Cole, begins to relate to her. Larkin aside, I loved the pace, plot structure and language of this novel. It's an edgy thriller filled with enough action, plot twists, and body count to satisfy all lovers of suspense and daring exploits. Pike's appeal is his uncanny ability to anticipate the actions of his foes, and then out-plan and out-maneuver them.
Fact of the matter is that Crais talent with the written word creates vivid pictures in your mind that would translate beautifully onto the silver screen. I can see any number of actors as Joe Pike. Bruce, Harrison and Arnold are getting a little "long in the tooth" for this sort of action, but how about Daniel Craig, Gerard Butler, or Clive Owen? Check out The Watchman and see if you don't agree? If not, do your own casting......it's a free country and your entitled to your opinion too.
The Watchman is a remarkable book.......2007-09-21
Robert Crais' The Watchman is a very inventive change from his novel focus on Elvis Cole to a stunningly intense focus on Joe Pike, Elvis Cole's side-kick and chief muscle. By developing a book in which Pike has to protect a young woman who is wanted by a relentless team of criminal killers, the book moves you straight into a world of non-stop violence, steady commitment to survival by doing whatever it takes and the virtues of a highly trained, very skilled person doing what he does best against bad people trying to do the worst they can. If you want an evening of forgetting everything else and going along for the ride, The Watchman is a remarkable book.
Seriously disappointing.......2007-08-27
After reading all of the Elvis Cole novels I thought a Joe Pike novel would be great fun. It isn't. Rather its about Joe babysitting a stupid society brat who is full of herself. She has to hide, has almost been killed a couple of times and she is still whining that she wants to go home. Joe makes her cut and dye her hair but lets her keep wearing her $500 jeans. Please give me a break. She runs off to dance half naked on a table in a bar showing the dolphin tattoo on her butt. Surely somebody has to recognize the halfwit. Joe however forgives her. This isn't the Joe Pike we have seen in earlier pages. Lastly Joe actually falls in love with this piece of trash. Perhaps Crais thought we wanted to see a kinder gentler dumber Joe. He was wrong. Oh finally the plot is garbage equal to the rest of this disappointing effort.
Ugh.......2007-08-17
I've read all of Mr. Crais's books, and for the most part have been quite happy with the characters and plots. This thing seems to be either the manifestation of writers block or a contractual obligation left too late. So all you Elvis and Joe fans, you have no problem with the fact the the female lead is a fictionalized Paris Hilton? Or what happens with her and the other characters (trying not to be a spoiler here). The whole point of these type of books is to get a couple of inetersting and familiar characters and have them have an adventure. in this one, you can't really believe their actions, and the plot seems to be thrown together around the bad premise. Whatever, the guy has written some really good ones like "Demolition Angel;" this seems completely throwaway.

A Hunger Like No Other.......2007-09-19
Although I found this book to be enjoyable, it did not require or engage my entire attention. I was able to read it at work between calls and was able to keep up with what was happening. This book to me seemed to drag at times and at other times moved along. I am not yet certain if it is going to stay in my collection or be passed on. I have not yet started the second book in the series although I will read it and have purchased the third book. It just did not reach out and grab me.
So So.......2007-09-14
I liked the start of the book but after a while it was a little fustrating. It took for ever for them to have sex. The theme was good and the charters are enjoyable. I think the charter Emma went a little overboard by playing really had to get. Took her for ever to come around. However, I still plan to read the rest of the series.
Sexy, Daring, but Something's Missing.......2007-09-01
I could hardly put this book down, especially the spicy scenes, which were written perfectly! And the plot of the book was believeable, and well-written.
But when Emmaline and Lachlain finally come together, the book immedietly goes downhill. Even when they finally have sex, the scene is too short, and not nearly as descriptive as previous scene. From there on is just plot, we don't get any more sexy situations!
And perhaps this is just me, but Emmaline's Valkyrie family were the MOST obnoxious characters I have EVER read in a book. Their logic, tactics, and personalities were grating and flat.
However, I still give the book 4 stars because all other aspects were amazing, and I definitely intend to read more in the series!!!
My first paranormal romance and ....I loved it!!.......2007-08-25
I usually read historical romances (medieval, Georgian, regency & Victorian), but the trend in romance seems to be going in the paranormal direction so I figured I'd give one a try. I was seriously afraid of what I call "rolling eyes syndrome" ; some things are just unbelievable and I was hoping that this wasn't going to be just a bad B-movie read.
I am so surprised! I love this book! It reminds of some of my fav Scottish romances, but MUCH more intense and WAY edgier/darker! The alpha male hero is totally hot Scottish highlander hunk (a real treat for this Julie Garwood fan) and the heroine is this a shy little thing who eventually turns into a kick a*s woman. There's werewolf's, vampire's, Valkyrie, witches, wraiths etc., and Cole (author) does a excellent job introducing and giving background information on each one of these. She does this so well that I became instantly engrossed in the book and simply couldn't put it down. There are tons of really cool secondary characters that each have their own unique powers and personally I can't wait for those sequels!
So if you like historical romance or contemporary for that matter, this is a great place to start checking out paranormals. As for me, I have a feeling this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
Fabulous.......2007-08-20
This is a great book. The character's are so well developed. You really feel like you know these people.

Hard, but good.......2005-01-19
I use this book for my tenth grade algerbra 2 honours class. It has very good examples and is very thourough with the information. However, we never go beyond halfway through the practice problems because after the first ten or so sets, the problems are so challenging and difficult, it becomes a time waster to spend all our time going over such hard equations. It is a very good textbook, and the CD is handy.

Still So So.......2007-09-14
Okay. Still love the characters and the love scenes are very very hot and steamy. And because of that I give a 4 star rating. But still similar to the 1st book, where the femaile character (Katja) plays a little too much hard to get. That kind of fustrates me a little. However, I still plan to read the 3rd book when it comes out.
No Rest for the Wicked.......2007-09-08
Kresley Cole is one of the best authors of immortal romance EVER!
I have read too many books to list in this genre from many best selling authors and can not remember what sets one book apart from another, except when it comes to Mrs. Cole's Dark series.
Her characters are beyond sexy and yet so vunerable it makes their need for each other so much more real. I find myself laughing out loud and caught off guard several times during her stories when one of the characters says something that makes perfect sense but is so off the wall funny, I need a minute or two to stop giggling and pick the book back up again.
To tell you the truth "No Rest for the Wicked" isn't even her best work out of the three books, but it is still so worth reading.
All of the men and women featured in her Immortals books are all very different from one another, and all very easy to relate to, yet they still remain three very different stories with different personalities, struggles passions and abilities, unlike most romance novels where the same story line and characters are recycled over and over again.
Anyway, my point is GET THIS BOOK and anything else in the Immortals After Dark Series right away. I guarantee you'll love them all!!!!!
p.s. Did I mention that the love scenes in her books are beyond hot! Beyond incredible! Beyond imaginative! Beyond wild, and beyond sweet?....Well if I didn't, then there you have it.
Great Sequal.......2007-08-30
I was pleasantry surprised by Kresley Cole's second book in the Immortals after Dark series.
Wonderfully put together, great characters, and a book I can read over and over again!
Not Bad.......2007-08-14
Not as good as the first book in this series but still a good read.
Great Read!.......2007-08-13

Wonderful vampire/werewolf and other creatures book.
Aunts are laughable and great supporting characters. I can't wait for their stories....

More than 10 years ago, I was shocked to learn that some puerile piece of fluff had won the Edgar for Best Paperback Original, when it was so obvious to me and virtually everyone else in the Western Hemisphere that the award should have gone to The Monkey's Raincoat, the book that introduced Elvis Cole, private eye, and is to this day one of the funniest books I've ever read.
The terrific Elvis Cole series has grown through the years, each book better than the last, but nothing prepared me for the quantum leap (yes, it's a cliché, but it belongs here) that Crais has made with L.A. Requiem. It's not as funny as the other books in the series, but it's a beautifully plotted detective story, rich with police procedure, and it will keep even the most sophisticated reader at sea right until the end. And that's what elevates this book to the level of literature.
This one is more about Joe Pike, Elvis's silent sidekick, than it is about Elvis. We learn, through Pike's own eyes, how his childhood made him the way he is today. It's also about a friendship so strong that it threatens Elvis's relationship with his beloved Lucy. It is a tender but dark book--a serial killer book--but it doesn't attempt to outgross the other serial killer books on the shelf. It is funny at times and chilling at other times, making it one of the rare books that can't help but linger in the memory long after it's been read and put away. --Otto Penzler
Book Description
Los Angeles is a city of perpetual reinvention. Inviting, with a promise of infinite hope, it can also be a glittering landscape of debilitating isolation. The city's lost souls take comfort in its promise--the notion that tomorrow could be the day to start all over again, to transform oneself into someone else. Someone more powerful, more beautiful, more daring.
At the core of
L.A. Requiem is Joe Pike, a former cop with a past as dark and foreboding as his demeanor. His only stable relationship is with his partner of twelve years, Elvis Cole, a talented and quick-witted PI with skeletons in his own past.
When Pike's former lover is found dead at a reservoir in the Hollywood Hills, the duo is brought in by the woman's father to monitor the police investigation. But Pike's no stranger to the men and women in the LAPD's elite Robbery-Homicide Division, at least one of whom has been harboring a long-buried desire for revenge.
With a rich cast of characters reminiscent of Raymond Chandler's classic
The Long Goodbye,
L.A. Requiem is the apotheosis of Crais's writing career--a gripping novel that envelops Cole and Pike in an ever-tightening web of conspiracies, secrets, and mortal passions that threatens to destroy their friendship, and leave one, or both, dead.
Customer Reviews:
poorly written.......2007-09-29
I am beginning to think only those who love a book write a review. Others immediately dismiss it and go on to better reading. L.A. Requiem is my second attempt at Robert Crais. The first was Forgotten Man. This book was flat, characters were jumbled but I made my way through it. This highly touted L.A. Requiem just had to be better, but it isn't. The writing is poor. Elmore Leonard says to writers; don't write what they don't read. In Crais books I was skimming and scanning more than ever. At the rate I was skipping I could have finished it in nothing flat. Joe Pike, okay so he had a poor upbringing, he is just a rude man. Elvis Cole, oh who cares.
When the daughter of a tortilla tycoon is murdered, a detective ..........2007-08-07
... must solve the crime before his mysterious mercenary partner goes to prison as the prime suspect. Absorbing. Longer review available at my website the Impatient Reader. See My Amazon profile for URL.
Only one criticism.......2007-07-08
This is my third Elvis Cole novel. I find them exciting, "page turners", with humor. They are well written and intersting. There is one thing that reall bothers me, the totally unnecessary and gratuitous profanity, particulary using Jesus name in vain, that really bothers me. Thanks
Great addition to series.......2007-02-10
This is the 8th installment of the Elvis Cole/Joe Pike series. Elvis is a wise cracking but hard working gumshoe in LA. Joe is a man of few words but incredible action and redefines the term "silent partner". In previous books Elvis has been the narrator/main protagonist with Joe slipping in and out when needed and the author has done a very good job of not bringing Joe into the fray to save the day a la Mr. Wizard. Because of this, those of us who have read the series know Elvis fairly well - Joe, not so much. That all changes in this book. The "case" in this volume begins when one of Joe's friend's, (!), daughter disappears and quickly spirals into the pursuit of a serial killer - all with Joe Pike as the fulcrum. I try to read series such as this in order, both for simple chronology reasons and also to enjoy an author's development. This book is a case in point of the latter. As stated in earlier reviews, the reader gets a whole new perspective on Joe Pike and he says more in this book than in all the previous combined. We learn of his past and even get inside his head. The story slides back and forth in time as well as in narrative perspective - not just Elvis this time - without missing a beat. Even with a couple of fairly predictable plot "twists" this is an extremely entertaining book. Highly recommended.
Joe Pike steals the show.......2006-12-24
With "The Last Detective" I read it for Elvis Cole. With this book I read it for Joe Pike. There was a lot of great aspects to this book. But, mostly the great characters keep you reading. Robert Crais has a way of developing a character exactly how you want them to be or how you would want them to act. Oddly enough I did not really like Elvis's girlfriend Lucy, this time. But, I think that was intended. The one problem with this book is that I felt it dragged a little in the middle. Several times in order to get to the actual scene you had to navigate through some (although very well written) divergence. That said I only read two of the Elvis Cole books and I intend to read the rest of them.
