prosperity consciousness from another source.......2007-08-05
Florence Scovel Shinn was writing about prosperity consciousness in the late 1800's and early 1900's, well ahead of the current trend. Her books are easy to read and easy to understand. I highly recommend this book to all of my friends and they are purchasing it and doing the same. That says it all in my mind.

The Game of Life and How to Play It has been the most influential self-help reading to date that I have found. The book is easy to read and understand. I have read my copy probably 15 times; pages are beginning to fall out. The fact that it is divided into sections for life's encounters, e.g., prosperity, love, etc., I can go back when I need help getting through the rough times to that particular section and gain strength and guidence. Once read, the writings just all come together to make more sense about approaching life's daily challenges than anything I have ever read; and, trust me I've read plenty of self-help books. I love this book so much that I have bought 6 copies to give to beloved family members and close friends because I do not want to keep the insights this book reveals to myself. I want everyone I care deeply about to experience what this book has to offer. Great read, great lessons!

Absolutely without question the most charming and inspiring book I've ever read. My copy is lovingly dog-eared, my loaner copy is in the same condition and I've bought several as gifts.
Of all the "positive thinkers", including the much more well-known such as Louise Hay and Norman Vincent Peale, Florence is the most enjoyable to read and the easiest to apply to your life, in my opinion.
Reading her is sheer delight and an instant mood-lifter and problem-solver, every time.

Europe is very different from being in the U.S. Rick Steves offers so much helpful advice on how to blend in and not stand out as a tourist from the USA. I found his advice particularly helpful (and alarming) when it came to tips to avoid being a victim of crime, such as pickpocking, etc. If one is traveling to Europe, you owe it to yourself and those in the countries where you are traveling, to try and communicate effectively, therefore, minimizing stress.

Rick Steves has finished setting up his publishing business and is back on the beat scoping out Europe for you. [BRAVO!]
Combine this book with: Party Europe, Second Edition (Now This Is Life) and give them a read BEFORE your departure and you will be doing yourself and your travel party a great service.
One caveat: the Party Europe book does not cover areas outside the most popular tourist destinations [but by inference it does provide what one may want to look for in those locales].

I thought I would glean some great insight about little known treasures found off the typical tourist routes along with some great restaurants and shopping. Instead the book was primarily about London (not Europe) and no 'insider' tips. Rick's barely veiled 'blame America' feelings are tiresome and more important are not accurate or necessary. I've traveled all over the world including much of Europe and have had wonderful experiences. France and Germany just voted in pro-American governments. Rick needs to get out more!

Excellent book - will make you think twice before buying that new car. .......2007-10-03
Making a million dollars a year is much different than being worth a million dollars. You may make a million, but if you spend it all your net worth is zero. When looking for millionaires to research, the authors initially looked at the fanciest and highest priced neighborhoods. What they found out was that there weren't many millionaires there at all. This book shows you that those who are actually worth millions do not have the newest cars, the latest gadgets or the biggest houses. They live modestly but have little or no debt. Its amazing to see people everyday falling into the traps this book outlines. Those that are wealthy know they are wealthy and do not need flashy cars and material things to prove it to the world. They don't buy cars, they buy property or other investments which make them more money. While others are borrowing money to maintain their million dollar lifestyle, the true millionaires are sitting back collecting money from their investments.

I think that it offers good tips, HOWEVER. I have a friend who is super cheap. Which is fine if you don't want to spend your money on yourself but money shouldn't come out of my pocket to help you. she is the type to never contribute to gas and tolls on trips, and never take her car. Always seem to be short a dinner or the cover charge in a club. I could go on and on with incidents, but I stopped going anywhere with her for this reason. I noticed in her profile she listed this book as one of her favorites. I think it offers a guideline but it is sometimes not frugal but acting cheap. so I understand why many say this about the book. What are you saving your money for, but to spend it later.

Sometimes a writer has to revisit the classics, and here we find that "gonzo journalism"--gutsy first-person accounts wherein the author is part of the story--didn't originate with Hunter S. Thompson or Tom Wolfe. Aldous Huxley took some mescaline and wrote about it some 10 or 12 years earlier than those others. The book he came up with is part bemused essay and part mystical treatise--"suchness" is everywhere to be found while under the influence. This is a good example of essay writing, journal keeping, and the value of controversy--always--in one's work.

I have wanted to read Huxley's THE DOORS OF PERCEPTION for quite some time and purchased it from Amazon about a year ago. However, I didn't get around to reading it until this past week, when it made its way to the top of my book stack. Not knowing if I was "ready" for the subject of hallucinogen use, I opened the thin volume and it hooked me immediately.
What was most impressive to me - others have described Huxley's clinical/intellectual approach to the drug experience - was how this work delicately projected the difference of drugs being used to escape TO something, rather than FROM something. This seems key to Huxley's "experience" versus other's entertainment, excitement, boredom, or addictive purpose for experimenting.
The second book of this thin volume, HEAVEN AND HELL, was, I'm quite sure, directly impacted by Huxley's previous drug experiences, as he argues, somewhat circularly, that drug use inspires appreciation of things produced via drug use.
I enjoyed both of these short works, presumably published together because of the William Blake connection in their titles. Despite reviews to the contrary, the ideas presented within seemed entirely accessible, if somewhat dated.

The Doors of Perception
This book is written in the form of an essay and recounts the experiences of the author after taking mescalin for the first time. It is a fairly short read, about 80 pages, but the philosophical reflections require time to fully grasp. Huxley volunteers to be the guinea pig in a controlled experiment to observe the effects of mescalin. The resulting experience gave cause for Huxley to reflect deeply on the nature of reality and how humans shape this reality through perception. What is perceived in one state of consciousness as real can indeed become something altogether different in another. Huxley explores this intertwined relationship and places it in a larger historical context recalling the works and deeds of the visionaries and mystics of the past.
This work is a must for anyone interested in boundless possibilities that arise from hallucinogenic substances. The fact that Huxley is a very intelligent scholar as well as a gifted writer allow him to tackle a difficult subject and tell it in words that lend themselves to the initiated. Those interested in the remote frontiers and the unmapped areas of human consciousness would do well to read this.
*Side note: The band the Doors took their name from the book. The title of the book actually refers to a line in the poem The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, written by William Blake in 1793. "If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear to man as it is, infinite."
Heaven and Hell
Another rather short essay (about 100 p.) from Huxley in the vain of The Doors of Perception. In it Huxley takes on the fast unknowns of Mind at Large, examining the basic properties and functions of visionary experience. This essay is basically a philosophical discourse on the possibilities that exist for visionary experience. The contrast between the positive and negative experience are characterized in the contrasting realms of Heaven and Hell. What makes this an incredibly interesting read is that all arguments made are based on plausible grounds and quite often on scientifically sound grounds. Although written over a half century ago, this work has proved a classic that stands out in a field that is still insufficiently investigated. Together with The Doors of Perception, Heaven and Hell shows that Huxley is as much a force in the world of nonfiction thought as he is in fiction. Read what this man has to say and think about it. There is a lot there to digest.

I had an idea to find out about the use of drugs and its effect on the consiousness. I have found Aldous Huxley on the Wikipedia and bought this book. I am not native english, and it took me quite long to get through the book, because its language is so difficult to understand. It is obvious that Huxley is a writer with a very broad range of vocabulary to express things. If you are not native, prepare yourself with a huge dictionary to read the book However the contect was fabulous.

Huxley is a very erudite individual, and hallucinogenics were novel for the time (1950's). What we can say now is that even well educated and intelligent individuals are not very far from psychotic thinking.

Huxley reveals his thoughts on psychedelics and philosophy in "The Doors of Perception"--all while experimenting with mescaline. This book is not for the uneducated and brain-dead stoner, though. Huxley, an accomplished novelist ("Brave New World" and "The Island"), was the father of the psychedelic movement. He laid the foundation for philosophical experimentation and had an enormous influnce on later advocates like Timothy Leary, Ken Kesy, and (more recently) Daniel Pinchbeck. Those who are fans of "The Doors" will be interested to know that this is where the band recieved its name. The reading can be arduous at times but well worth the effort for anyone who is researching psychotropic drugs.

Slow starter however it tells all you wanted to know.......2007-09-21
The first part of the book was a slow start. All I was interested in was the details about the girlfriends and the day to day life in the mansion. It does get to that part later and was enough to satisfy my curiosity. It also answered many questions I had about the 3 current girlfriends in the house. If you like the show and you want to know, just read the book. I thought Izabella did a nice job telling the details in a nice way. How else can you explain the details of that type of living situation without smearing anyone? It is just how I thought it would be at the mansion. Izabella is absolutely gorgeous and has self respect which is more than I can say for the current girlfriends of which I am not a fan of. I do like the show but they should call it "gold diggers"!!!!

This was a great book if you want a little more insight into the playboy mansion. I watch the Girls Next Door on E! and since I have started watching I have wanted to know some more secrets of Hugh Hefner, his girlfriends, and Playboy. I have heard and read a lot of things before reading this book, but things are clarified. I think if you want to know more about Playboy and what life is really like, this book will provide that.

I don't feel sorry for Hefner, he's got plenty of dough and wants to do the right thing with it before he dies. Spend it all on that wonderful entity called ......"himself". I got to say I never felt like he was someone to laugh at but this book does it. An 80 year old "swinger" purchasing 20 year old girlfriends and thinking he's still looking "cool". What a clown. All that money and he wastes it on hookers that mock him behind his back.
Thanks Hef, you taught me something, hedonism isn't all it's cracked up to be and you must be one first class jerk to draw in flies like this author.

I think that there have been a lot of in-depth reviews of this book, both on this site and others, so I will just get to the point in this review:
1)For someone who continually touts her education, she obviously must not have paid much attention in grammar. Were they in such a hurry to get the book out that they skipped an editor altogether? There are so many errors that it takes reading some paragraphs twice to get what she was trying to say!
2)I found it absolutely amazing that she would talk herself up as being so loyal to Hef in one sentence, then say how she laughed at him behind his back the next. It is hard to explain without using specific instances that would spoil it, but that was a consistant theme throughout the book. She would praise him and then trash him for the exact same things! She not only sounds like an ungrateful brat now, but her memoirs show that she was an ungrateful brat all the time.
3)Gee, bitter? She tries to make herself out as some kind of victim with the other girls, but she very clearly has just as bad of attitude as the girls whom she is trashing, if not worse. She at least should have reviewed what she was slamming the other girls for before she went and wrote about her doing the exact same thing.
4)Nothing here is shocking. It's not like we are reading about a politician with a squeaky clean record here-We are reading about Hugh Hefner. Although some of the descriptions are disgusting, she did all of that for two years. She acts like she was so shocked and appalled in the bedroom, but she admits that she participated (of course with a it wasn't her fault attitude) in it all.
I would say that it would have been a light, easy read had she been a better writer and not have been so obviously self-centered. The basic information is interesting and gives a lot more insight into the Mansion, but do not expect it to read like someone with as much of an education as she claims to have.

I didn't think there was anything really all that earth shattering in this book. I think we all figured this is what went on. I think she is jealous of the girls that are still his girlfriends. That is she isn't on the show. I also think more women as girlfriends would lead to more problems that just having a couple of them. I think that Hef is a very generous person. It is shame that people use him as they do. I wouldn't waste my time reading this book.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is struggling to find the answers for that mentally challenged family member who does not assimilate into society well. This book answered so many questions for our family. I found it to be very balanced and not "opinionated". The author did an excellent job of presenting the characters personalities,or lack therof, in a way that all readers could understand. The medical community seems somewhat hesitant to place labels on certain individuals and it was refreshing to see that there is some explanation and definition for what our family has been enduring for years. A great read!

I am one those people next door who can literally do ANYTHING.... and feel no guilt. I am unable to love. I am magnetic, sexy, and the word "charisma" does not begin to explain the animal magnetism I exude. I live to dominate and win. I eat my steaks rare--singed a bit on the outside and bloody inside. Very bloody. And I'll tell you what. Until Martha Stout wrote this book that gives all the ordinary sad-sack suckers out there the tools to identify my deep EEEEEEEEEE-vil, I was on track to dominate the world! BWA-HA-HA!!! But now that even an average schlump can look at me and think "psycho" without straining his limited mental faculties, the world shall never be my own personal oyster--with a fully stocked harem of beautiful captives, and my legions of enemies working themselves to death in salt mines. This is a great book for anyone interested in Sociology. This book provides not only a glimpse into the lives of sociopaths, but is truly a first line of defense for everyone. It personally gave me a lot of insight into how these mentally ill people operate. I have a great understanding and unbelievably, empathy for sociopaths.

You could build a library with all that's been written about The Doors over the past 40 years. This makes it hard to find anything new, but Ben Fong-Torres has done that here. Several never before published photos (including Jim dressed as an Indian for Halloween at age 7!) and interviews with Jim's father, brother & sister (his mother was unfortunately too ill to participate) make this a must for any Doors fan. Also has lots of commentary from Ray, Robby & John and others who were closely involved with the band.

Rock writer nonpareil Ben Fong-Torres has done an excellent job in this very fine work about the Doors. Lots of never seen before pictures and what a great treat that we finally heard something from Morrisons relatives, especially the rear-admiral. Im pretty sure those fat royalty cheques that started pouring in from 1974 has mellowed the old warriors heart over the years, but still you believe that somewhere deep inside, he was proud of his son achievements. It's a book that you can't put away, so if you start reading it early, you most likely will finish it the same day.

Forty years ago The Doors broke on through and romanced the public with poetic nightmares combined with a jazz influenced brand of blues driven rock and roll. We all know about Jim Morrison, the bands wildly erratic front man who lived either on the edge of a stage or at the edge of his own mortality. The three remaining Doors members John Densmore, Robby Kreiger and Ray Manzarek give their take on what it was like to ride the ascending success and ultimately the burn out and downfall of comet Morrison. What Oliver Stone got wrong in his 1991 movie, "The Doors" Fong-Torres is determined to set straight in this retrospect. The corresponding biographies of each member help to re-tell the now famous stories but also add a more personal insight and explanation of these now legendary tales. It's always been my contention that actually being in such a famous band it is impossible to truly appreciate or understand your own impact. The Beatles never had "The Beatles" to appreciate or enjoy like the public did and the same thing goes with this remarkable group. The Doors were just trying to write some songs and score with the ladies of Venice but after these four individual and creative elements combined a funny thing happened resulting in pure rock and roll legend. It's all here in beautiful detail and imagery, from the band's first rehearsals and the ground breaking shows at the Whiskey, the Ed Sullivan snub, Miami madness to Jim's controversial departure from the United States and ultimately the planet. This is a beautiful coffee table styled book that chronicles all of The Doors phenomenal successes and internal struggles. Just as with The Beatles "Anthology" book the surviving members have assembled to tell their remembrances and share some never before seen photos and antidotes. This leaves Jim's creative and prophetic lyrics along side his infamous quotes behind as both his contribution towards the book and his path to or bread crumb trail back from the other side.

I had to tear out an old, rotting window that had an old rotting air conditioner wedged into it. My fiancee and I decided to install a wider window in it's place. Oh oh. That meant tearing out the stucco exterior and plaster interior to do so! I didn't want to spend 1000 bucks (or more) to hire someone to do it and install a new window. I've never done any work like this before, and I didn't know where to begin. So I looked into getting Home Depot to do it, but they would only replace existing windows with the exact same size window for a fee of 250 dollars on top of the price of the window. So that wasn't going to work for us. I needed help! So I found this book on Amazon and decided to check it out at Home Depot, since they had the same book but for a little more.
Well, since it was the only book that seemed to cover everything I needed to know, and I was running out of time, I decided to purchase it and put in the order for the window. Well, the window came and I got right at work at demolishing the old window and extending the opening for the new one.
This book was GREAT! Although the book is only 300 pages, it gives you a good overview of what you need to do to get your project done. Once I started figuring out exactly what I needed to do, I could use this book as a reference on what to do to accomplish it. You see, this book does not really give you an "idiots guide" how to... it will not explain the little detail, like how to plaster a wall or how to miter cut trim for your window or door. You need to use it as a reference book and an overview of your project. You MUST read the book through and figure out what steps you need to take. For example, for me... I had to:
1) Tear out the old window (without destroying the wall completely)
2) Extend the opening (which means I need to know how to cut/remove stucco on the outside and plaster on the inside)
3) Reframe the new opening to support the ceiling and new window (which also gives you ways to support the ceiling if you intend to mess around with the studs in the wall that hold up the ceiling)
4) Install the window (different types of windows have different types of ways to install)
5) Fix the stucco outside and plaster inside (this is where I am now)
6) Add trim on the outside and trim on the inside (I've already read what I need to do this and have gotten the materials to finish it)
And you know what, this book gave me great examples on how to do ALL that. BUT, I had to jump around the book to read the sections that applied to me. Remember, this book only gives you a great overview of your project. That is the ONLY reason why I gave it 4 stars. I'd like to give it 4.5. This book is very very good at giving me the information I needed and had GREAT pictures and examples. JUST MAKE SURE YOU READ THE WHOLE BOOK FIRST (skim through sections you don't need to know, but maybe look at them anyway because you may learn something useful), and then read the sections again that apply to you! If you need more details, find another suppliment book for that task. Know what you need to do first before you start any major project.
And you know what, I probably saved myself $1000 doing it myself. This book more than paid for itself.
Excellent Book........2003-08-14
Not only did it cover step by step on all doors and windows. It covered garage doors and openers. It discussed installing locks. And there was even a section on if your window won't open you do this to fix it type of stuff. Also, if you are putting in a bay window, there is a section on how to roof it. I had been looking for a help book like this for a long time. It does not bog you down in highly technical stuff.

I took this off the shelf to revisit after several years and was surprised that I had forgotten what a gem this book is! The book has a plethora of writing excercises and advice to guide you toward working out and through different situations. This is an excellent self help resource, and it's great for writers, journalers, and for healing.
This time around, I started out working from chapter 18 which is on Perspectives, Decisions and Roads Not Taken. When I finished that, I left the book out and have worked on several other excercises.
This is a book that I'd never part with because it is so versatile and useful. It would make a great gift item. This gives meaning to the saying "A book is a present you can open again and again."
A Healing Journey.......2007-09-03
As a therapist who wants to facilitate healing, and someone who has written a book about writing and healing, I want to honor Kay Adams' work--one of the first people who forged a path in showing the power of writing as a healing tool, and how words contain immense power to transform. In my clinical work, I look for emerging insights during the session. Sometimes it helps for the client to stop talking and to write in the silence of the session. The words on the page often reveal amazing insights and information flowing from the hand of the client, flowing from the the wise inner self. The idea that there is a self, a real self within is significant and important. There are many paths to transformation, and we need all the guides along the way we can get. This delightful, intimate book is indeed a guide that can be used by most people to discover personal change and transformation--showing us that what we seek is within us--that writing our personal history is one way to deepen our understanding of who we were and who we are becoming.

I bought this book a year ago and I was a bit scared to go into my inner depths. I've been following a few lessons recently and I am getting very good response from my inner self. This book is easy to read, but please do not get a wrong idea. The exercises are very powerful and have helped me conquer many of my favorite monsters: fear, pain, guilt. Do not think it twice, order it right now.

Kathleen Adams really did a great job when writing this book. After seeing all of the good reviews on here I thought I would take a look at it in the store before purchasing it. Having just bought a writing journal and getting back into the journaling mode, I was looking for a new way of seeing journaling and getting ideas on paper. I have to say there is something in here mentioned for everyone!!! I really like how the author is able to provide some of her own journaling experiences as well as decent examples for the various styles mentioned in this book. Some of the methods in this book really inspires you to reach back in your past and apply some of these methods. I've learned a massive variety of ways to journal after reading this one, it was definately worth my time and money. I recommend this one for all people, whether you are returning to journaling or just beginning, there is something in here for you!
Better than I expected.......2006-08-09
This book is an easy read (for those of you who don't like to read alot). It is not a rule book or a "how to" book. It is a bunch of ideas and suggestions for journaling to the end of self understanding and growth.
The journal is presented as your own world, you can say, be, and do (or not do) anything. It's all up to you. What do you want?

unfortunately i don't remember much of this book...I think the style of writing was dry. Or perhaps it was the subject matter.

I'm sorry for having such a negative comment but after reading this book, I thought, "WHY WOULD ANYONE WANNA READ THIS?" My mind began wandering off after reading just the 2nd page. I certainly do not believe that this book is for children younger than 12, especially if you have no historical knowledge of the background of this story. I think that adults would enjoy this book much more than a child or a student. I would not recommend this book to anyone.
I think that the main reason I did not enjoy this book was the way that Marguerite de Angeli worded or wrote this book, such as the way that she used the terms, 'twill and thee. Who uses those words anymore?

A Great Book Made Even Better.......2007-05-07
The Door in the Wall is the story of a young medieval boy who loses the use of his legs through a serious illness. Both of his parents are away from home at the time--his mother to attend the queen and his father at war. During his own sickness, the boy's caretakers die of the plague and he is left to die alone. Rescued by a monk and taken to the monastary to live, the boy must rise to the challenge of forming a new life as a cripple. Will his crippled legs also cripple his heart and spirit? Not if Brother Luke can help it. With strong love and gentle, insistent wisdom, Brother Luke helps Robin to see that his life is still significant, still necessary, and still useful. Through a wonderful episode of bravery and skill, Robin rescues his town from an attack of the brutal Welsh army, and also finds the answer to his won burning question--will his parents still love him in his crippled condition? A wonderful story of hope, perseverance, acceptance of reality, and the value of each individual's particular gifts. The audio book reader is WONDERFUL! He makes Brother Luke come alive and fills the story with suspenceful expression. Great book!

The Door in the wall was about a kid named robin that early in the book he got sick and lost the useage of his legs. So he makes crutces and gets around on those. so he goes with Brother Luke to a castle. The catle got attacked by the welsh and they didi not have enough people to defend the castle. So Robin journeys to another place and gets the army from there to help them fight. so they won the fight and still sot to keep the castle. After that his mother and father came to the castle.
The thing i liked most about the book is near the end at the battle. The other thing i liked about the book is that even though Robin could not walk he did every thing that normal people could do. The thing i did not like about is that it was boring in the middle. over all it was a good book.

Delightful, low-key, descriptively lean account of England circa the 1330s through the eyes of a handicapped boy. Not the action adventure some readers seem to be expecting, but a non-revisionist slice of life, Middle Ages style. Younger readers will need to be good readers, and patient ones, to reap these rewards. (In fact, that's what this book is about!)
De Angeli's short Newbery winner follows Robin, ten year old son of a nobleman fighting in Edward III's "Scottish wars" and one of the Queen's ladies-in-waiting. Robin's London caregivers are wiped out by the plague, so the care of his delicate health (he has recently been stricken lame) falls to a benevolent monk named Brother Luke. The good brother quietly applies himself to strengthening Robin in both body and mind, emphasizing that perseverance and patience will always result in finding "a door in the wall," a way beyond present obstacles. Robin's lessons include wood carving, reading, writing, singing and playing music, swimming, and walking with crutches.
There is no insistent plot to jerk the story forward and no loud, overstated characters to interfere with Robin's quiet development. Robin shares some mild adventures on the road in the company of Luke and a minstrel named John Go-in-the-wynd before all his newfound resourcefulness and skill are called upon in defense of a local castle.
Nice, pleasant, quick. Unapologetic about the era's Christian culture and the benevolence of its priests, so probably not very popular among trendy Newbery spokespeople these days. But De Angeli's message of gentle, humble perseverance is actually inspiring.
