Book Description
With nearly three million copies sold over eight editions, The Enjoyment of Music is the best-selling music appreciation text of all time. Spanning the Middle Ages through the twenty-first century, the text offers a thorough introduction to the elements of music, a broad overview of the history of musical styles, and fascinating cultural contexts and perspectives. The Ninth Edition of this classic text features a stunning new design, exciting new repertory, and an unmatched ancillary and media package.
Customer Reviews:
Good, but older editions are better............2007-05-06
I really appreciated the older editions of this book and thought the language was clear and understandable. I still think these aspects of the book are good, however, I am disappointed at the content. I agree with other reviewers who have suggested that the work should be broken into two books -- one on modern music and another on classic music. It just doesn't make any sense to skip major composers and I feel this one size fits all approach misses the mark in this regard.
On the other hand, the book is well-written and has been well-received over its many years and editions. Some reviewers point to an overly politically correct stance, which I believe has some validity. Including minor women composers at the expense of major male composers is not politically correct, it is an inexcusable error. On the other hand, excluding women's contribution to the musical literature completely or leaving out a major woman composer is also an error. I am guessing that a chapter on the cultural issues around women and music with an overview of women composers that are largely unknown or underrated would have better served the target audience.
Textbooks are EXTREMELY expensive and after so many editions, I think this one should be a homerun. Unfortunately, it is now good, but not great. If you don't like this one, you may want to try Music: An Appreciation w/ Multimedia Companion 4.5 CD-ROM. This is done by a concert pianist and does justice to the major composers.
While I am not currently a professional musician, I was for 11 years and I continue to take lessons from a concert pianist. I play a variety of instruments and I've been studying music since before I could read. As such, I think I am in a good position to evaluate the merits of this text. It is still very worthwhile, but I hope they do better in the next edition. Another book worth considering is What to Listen for in Music and Music, The Brain, And Ecstasy: How Music Captures Our Imagination. The former book, gives you an inside look at music through the eyes of a composer and the second is a wonderful and entertaining journey through understanding sound and how music produces pleasure from a psychological and biological viewpoint. Both books are very readable by non-musicians and laypersons without a background of any type. The second book is one that I read in two sittings.... AWESOME! I have reviewed both, if you want more details.
If you are also looking to understand some music theory, try Harmony and Theory: A Comprehensive Source for All Musicians (Essential Concepts (Musicians Institute).). This is a great short introduction to music theory and harmony as it relates to modern music. If you are musical at all, you will find that this covers a lot of ground in a short space.
Buying the Book Online.......2007-02-07
This isn't a review about the work of the book but about ordering it online for people who might be nervous about buying this product online. I bought it for a college course. The bookstore wanted to charge me $50 downtown. I bought it online for about $25, including standard shipping. I was nervous that the book wouldn't make it here on time and I also wondered if it really would be the correct book. The book was shipping in 3 business days (5 days) which was faster than I thought. It was more than a great price, it was said to be in "good condition" and it was in great condition and it was the correct book!
The book itself is easy to understand and follow. I enjoy reading it and it has a lot of up to date information that makes it all the more interesting.
Response to "a reader" and "music teacher".......2006-07-20
After having gone through nine editions, this text bears little resemblence to the original work published in 1955. That text, and the next few editions, were solid and informative. With the addition of co-author Kristine Forney, the work has definitely taken on a more modern perspective at the unfortunate expense of truly great composers.
Having been a serious student of music in earlier life, and a constant listener since birth, I have an avid appreciation of most genres of music. Having said that, I firmly believe the study of music appreciation should remain somewhat "high-brow". By this I mean that it should limit itself to what is considered, in common parlance, as "classical" or "orchestral" music.
Modern genres of music do display moments of true musical genius and originality. But, for the most part, the majority of the material is borrowed, ultimately from the "classical." Most popular musicians have little knowledge of musical composition, or even how to record their works in musical notation. Rap and electronic are the ultimate in this area, many times outright recording a piece of someone else's music and blending the cuts together to produce their own "song."
If one seriously wants to develop an appreciation of music, a solid exposure to and understanding of the "classical" composers is a must. Otherwise, as is the case with most modern and post-modern (whatever that means) teaching materials, a true understanding of the origins, history, and development of the subject is lost. Herbie Hancock and Michael Jackson may be interesting and enjoyable, but they are hardly groundbreaking from a musical perspective.
The authors should separate the "classical" from the "modern" into two texts. Both studies would greatly benefit. After all, with the proliferation of college students downloading music and playing it on every device that can produce a sound, does anyone really think students do not have an appreciation of "modern" music?
Excellent History of Music!!!.......2006-05-12
This is an excellent book to read and study music from. It lays out the history of music in a very understandable manner for an average person. The timeline of music consisting of such musical eras as the medieval, renaissance, baroque, classical, romantic, post-romantic, impressionism, early twentieth century and later twentieth century is very enlightening. It's all there from folk to jazz to ragtime and swing. The great composers would have loved to read this one. By the way, poets, make your feast on the history of the Troubadours, Trobairitz, Trouveres and Minnesingers poet-musicians from the middle ages from France and Germany. This is really an interesting book to read regarding music. It's truly educational. Also check "Trilogy Moments for the Miond, Body and Soul" with a new selection of Epulaeryu poems.
Responding to "a reader".......2006-04-09
In response to "a reader's" review, Holst and Orff did not contribute to the larger schema of music history. Although a work like "Carmina Burana" is significant only because it's been rehashed over in dramatic parts of a film, it has little value in terms of delineating trends in music. I only partially agree with his/her assessment of J.-de-la-Guerre because her work is used more to show a common example of highly ornamented French harpsichord music, rather than the composer herself. This is a well-organized book, giving a survey (keyword: SURVEY) of Western music, which means that if you want to learn about Elgar, read a book on him.

"Tempus porco nihil est," or, "Time to a pig means zilch," according to Grunt: Pigorian Chant from Snouto Domoinko de Silo, a very funny takeoff on the Gregorian chant craze by Sandra Boynton, the author of Chocolate: The Consuming Passion and other droll volumes. This amusing little book, complete with a well-sung 40-minute compact disc by the Ad Hog Camerata, is a note-perfect send-up of chant and the hype that surrounds it. At the same time, the book presents the musical chronicle of a day in the life of one seriously pretentious farm. Boynton's pictures--from the cover to the "illuminations"--are a delight. The cows speak for record company executives everywhere when they intone, "Non plaudite. Modo pecuniam jacite." (Don't applaud, just throw money.) This would make a perfect gift for a musical friend, and if no one gets it for you, you'd be well justified in buying it for yourself for a quick pick-me-up or chant overdose antidote.
Book Description
A delightfully silly, good-natured parody of the recording phenomenon Chant and other works that put Gregorian music on the charts, Grunt is a book and CD set that combines Sandra Boynton's inimitable way with farm animals and a satirical sense that comes deliciously out of left barn.
In a far-off valley live the obeisant Domoinkan Pigs of Snouto Domoinko de Silo. Here, twelve times a day, these simple swine grunt the unadorned, ethereal music of Pigorian Chant (translation included). For occasions from the first mealtime (Op-slay ime-tay. Et's lay eat-ay. Um yay, um-yay.) to Nox Animaliae, when they're joined by all the animals in a harmony that dates back before the time of Caesar Hogustus, the pigs chant.
Listen, look at Sandra Boynton's delicious illustrations, and laugh. It's what to play whenever you're feeling disgruntled.
Customer Reviews:
Very Funny!.......2007-06-04
A friend sent "Grunt: Pigorian Chant" to us because we raise pastured pigs. It is hilarious! My kids had a blast with it and I read the (long) intro as well as the words of the music to my three and a half year old daughter. We all enjoy Pig-Latin and Ubby-Dubby as well as my son is studying real Latin (we homeschool) and I know Latin. This all made the whole thing that much more poignant. This is a very serious (sus-ious) out-take on classical music.
Clever, Not for Toddlers.......2007-02-11
There's no denying that this is clever, well-written material. But our toddler, who loves the other Boynton book/CD combos, can't really get into it. What's more, unlike the other discs, this one is somewhat annoying as background music.
Serious chant aficionados may disagree, but I think it's best to plan on sitting still and listening to this with the words in front of you to really appreciate it. But you probably won't need more than one or two listenings before it gets tiring. The concept is clever, and the execution is very good, but the joke wears thin pretty quickly.
Parents should also be aware that this isn't really like the other Boynton material (such as "Philadelphia Chickens" and "Rhinoceros Tap"), and it's not really music for kids. They might learn to enjoy it (and maybe they should), but it's definitely not in the same vein as those other more simple and tuneful works.
grunt grunt.......2007-01-11
The kids I bought it for seem to think it was okay but I didn't find it as entertaining as her other music books.
A Must Have for Chant Lovers.......2006-08-25
Hilarious spoof of Gregorian Chant. If you are a music history buff, this is a must for your collection.
Funniest thing ever!.......2005-07-16
My Mother first shared this with me and it is one of the most cleverly funny things I have ever experienced. I belong to a medieval reinactment group (SCA) and I really love putting it on as background at meetings and seeing if anyone catches on. It works both as normal music (if you arn't paying attention it sounds just like regular chant), and as a fabulous IN JOKE.
I think you have to have a certain kind of twisted humor to really enjoy it though... and don't buy it if you don't enjoy chant. You'll get bored otherwise... but I love it and hope to share it with many others.

Book Description
"Sound is more than simply a medium of artistic expression. Sound has practical and powerful applications in the real world."
Mantras, or simple chants, are short phrases packed with energy and intention--specifically designed to generate powerful sound waves that promote healing, insight, creativity, and spiritual growth. Healing Mantras is the practical, how-to guide that makes the strengths and benefits of mantras available to everyone. The transformative power of sound has been passed down to the present from the sages of India, the classical scientists of ancient Greece, and the medieval monks of Europe. Mantras, sounds, and chants have inspired, comforted, and mended the lives of individuals, religious orders, and even entire cultures. Even though the science and discipline of chanting and formal prayer are practiced in every religion around the world, this is the first time that ancient Sanskrit mantras have been explained and adapted to Western needs.
One of the few Western experts in Hindu and Buddhist mantras, Thomas Ashley-Farrand has practiced mantra-based spiritual disciplines for twenty-five years. In this illuminating book, he explains how and why mantras work and shows how to use them for everything from controlling habits to overcoming fear, from curing specific ailments to finding inner peace. In each of the more than fifty mantras, all translated from the original Sanskrit, Ashley-Farrand unlocks the power of every word, explains its appropriate application, and tells you how to pronounce it in easy-to-follow phonetic symbols. Inside, you'll find mantras for
- Health - Worldly Success - Habit Control - Protection - Grief - Anger - Controlling Fear - Personal Attraction - Wisdom - Concentration and Mental Clarity - Healing Life Issues - and more!
These mantras can be repeated aloud or in silence and can be used by people of any religion or spiritual practice, "as you wash dishes, as you drive on the freeway, as you meditate, or as you cook." Sound can help and sound can heal, and Healing Mantras now makes this sound medicine available to everyone.

The world is sound - .......2007-04-04
This book offers a wonderful view into the world of using sound to heal the body, mind, and soul. It provides an excellent foundation for understanding the power of mantras.
When I purchased this book (about four years ago), I had a lot of problems with my eyes. I used to get ulcers on my cornea, and no doctors were able to explain why this happened. I discovered a mantra in this book, dedicated to healing the eyes. After practicing this mantra for a few weeks, my eyes began to feel better. After a few months, my eye doctor was suprised to find a noticeable improvement in my eyesight. Since practicing this mantra, I've only experienced one more corneal ulcer (about two years ago).
Since then, I've incorporated many of the mantras found in this book into my daily life.
Peace be with you! Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti!
Good book to keep in handy.......2007-01-05
A good book for those who interested in transcendental meditation. It explains very well about the using of mantra.
A Phenomonal Book.......2006-10-20
This book is a vault of wisdom. The author has made the intricate mantra work, easily understood in a profound way. I have searched long and hard to understand the use of mantras, encountering little more than a brick wall time and time again, in my search. This author has taught me not only how to climb the wall, but to walk through it. A commendable book, that I recommend to all, with great excitement.
TWO WORDS: THIS WORKS!!!.......2006-09-24
I used the Lakshmi (for prosperity) and Ganesha (for removal of obstacles) mantras from this book to help me find a job. My unemployment benefits were about to run out and I wasn't finding anything. Despite no background in the industry I am now in, on the 40th (the last) day of my practice, I was hired in an entry level position that will soon lead to more money. Previously, I was getting second interviews, but losing out to other people with more experience.
There is nothing in my resume to suggest that I had an office background or barely even computer skills. I am looking to take a class and explained that in the cover letter and interview. Yet the woman who interviewed and hired me, for some reason, thought I had an extensive background in both! I can't help but feel that the mantras helped me overcome this significant barrier hiring-wise. Now I am using a Saraswati mantra from the book to help me with the learning curve of my new job and another mantra from the book for self confidence and strength which feels VERY powerful and I only just today starting using it. [I also improved my chances of getting hired by scheduling my interviews when the moon was NOT "void of course." See Jim Maynard's Celestial Guides or other resources to know when this is.]
I feel I am only just scratching the surface of what this book can help me do in a variety of areas of my life. I read all kinds of metaphysical books and try to adjust my thinking, but find it hard to break old habits of being fearful or limited in my thinking. What I love about this book is this: it gives you something concrete to DO everyday, twice a day that seems to work, regardless. I spent $13 on a mala to help me count my mantra repetitions and probably did only about 20 minutes of work twice a day. If I had done even more, I think my outcome would have been even better. Yet, from where I started, this is a huge victory for me.
As the author of the book states, mantras don't take the place of, in my case, doing the usual job search actions. However, there is no doubt in my mind that using mantras made all the difference in the outcome. It even, I think, steered me around a deceptive, (what I thought was a) sure-thing job with another company. It turned out that they had gone through five people in a very short time in the position. Not a good sign. I'll leave the descriptions of this book to other reviewers. What I wanted to know when I was deciding to get this book and looking at people's reviews of it was what their outcomes of doing the mantras were. I hope mine will help others to get this book and take this fantastic journey!
The power of the Word........2006-08-16
I attended one of Mr. Thomas Ashley-Farrand meetings in Los Angeles and was impressed by his humble (esoterically speaking) way to communicate his truth. I read the book, Healing Mantras: Using Sound Affirmations for Personal Power, Creativity, and Healing, and started using the mantras immediately in my service to humanity, the result is amazing. I have all the books, I practice chanting mantras regularly, and I can see the miracles with my own eyes.
Om Gum Ganapatayei Namaha was my key.

Chanting 101.......2003-07-20
Provides a good overview of world chant. You certainly can't go wrong starting here but if you are a serious explorer seeking to delve into the more esoteric realms of toning, chant, healing with sound vibration and the "sound current", check out my favorite new sound healing find: Travelling the Sacred Sound Current: Keys for Conscious Evolution" (book & cd) by vibrational healer Deborah Van Dyke...its a spiritual treasure.
Crosses over all paths.......2001-12-16
We are seeing many artists "cross over" between the arts these days. Robert Gass is probably best known for his recordings on Chant. We might probably be most familiar with the "Merry Meet" song, which has been in .wav form for many years. Mr. Gass now approaches Chant from the literary side with this book.
Mr. Gass gives us a look at how he became personally involved in chant, and then explores the history and mystery of chant. He examines the roots of chant, the various cultures who apply chant in their everyday lives, even how we can learn to chant (Mr. Gass assures everyone they CAN chant). He also explores how chant can be applied to our own personal Spiritually.
I noticed this book can be purchased three ways. You can buy the book alone, or with the 2 CD set. You can also find a book club version with a single CD. I like the CD that accompanies the book. The CD gives you a very good overall accompaniment to the book and for those who are not musically inclined it gives a reference point, and an idea of the style of music we are discussing here.
I also found this book crosses over all Spiritual Paths. Wiccan, Pagan, Native American, Christian, Jewish, Hindu, so many paths utilize chant. Chant does not discriminate. I found this to be another "Celebration of our Diversity" and can be recommended to anyone on any Spiritual Path. I also found it to be a most wonderful tool to be utilized by anyone. Give it a try. I am sure you all know at least one chant from somewhere. How about:
We call come from the Goddess
And to Her we shall return
Like a drop of rain
Flowing to the ocean.
You know that one, don't you? See how simple? Sit for a few minutes, singing it over and over. See if you don't feel better. The book has some chants, with music in the back Resource Guide. For those with some music skills, it would be easy to pick up the tunes. The rest of us can sing along with the CD till we have it memorized.
A wonderful exploration of a subject we are probably familiar with but never really explored. I do hope you at least pick up one of his CD's and give this a listen. I think you will be very happy with them.
Very thorough, hard to find information.......2000-05-21
This book is a rare find. Most writing about Chanting is based on a single religious doctrine/path. Gass, however, covers Christian, Jewish, Sufi (and other Islamic), Buddhist, Goddess/Pagan, and First Nations (aka American Indian... if you want to be inaccurate...) chants. Whew. The book is written in a very conversational manner. It's easy to read and has a personal feel. I was (pleasantly) suprised to see how much of the book is geared towards teaching the reader to chant. There are "exercises" in nearly every chapter, as well as ideas on how to incorporate chant in everyday life.
Occasionally Gass's shifts to New-Agey lalala kindof material that some people may find off-putting (I kept getting the feeling that he was going to start talking about Astral Projection any moment...) The bulk of the book, however, is pretty down-to-earth and definately recommended. It is respectful to all religious belief systems and is very thorough and is sure to have you chanting, whether Alleleuia or Ommmmm.... (or both...)
Imperishable Spirit in Sound.......1999-05-20
I KISS the pages of Chanting. (When I ordered this book from One Spirit book club, there was an exclusive complimentary CD, with the 'best of' which included Cuncti Simus, Alleluia, Santa Maria, Sri Ram, Om Namaha Shivaya and the surprise of unreleased tracks ~ beautiful CD. Listen deeply. You can hear the twilight and the nebula chorus. The constellations are a lullaby. The cosmic vibration is so lovely - quicken your heart to accept its sonic invitation. Did I mention that I simply adore this book? JOY. Jai Jai Jai ~ hari om. Bless you Robert, brother of my heart. (pranam) Namaste.
Informative and entertaining,the definitve guide........1999-05-15
Until I read CHANTING I never realized how healing chanting can be for you. This book gives a good history of chant and explains how it is used around the world. I am now chanting in places I have never dreamed of -- while stuck in traffic, doing the dishes and before I meditate!
Book Description
Just three years ago a commercially released CD of Gregorian chant by the monks of Silos became an international bestseller. Such has been the popularity and interest in this serene, meditative and mind-stilling song that most music stores now have racks dedicated to Gregorian, medieval and plainchant. Publications in the field have grown proportionately, but as yet there is no single-volume, general guide to Gregorian chant. Professor Crocker's comprehensive introduction intelligently fills this gap. Accessible to a wide readership, this work is targeted at interested listeners and those who purchase CDs, as well as the practising musician or student. There is no assumption of a technical understanding of music. Blending the conclusions of modern research with a contemporary, popular appreciation of the song, Crocker's aim is merely to promote greater knowledge and enjoyment of Gregorian chant.

An Introduction in the Truest Sense of the Word.......2001-09-18
If a thorough historical description is what you're looking for then this book will provide that more than adequately.
Mr. Crocker places the kind of chant known as Gregorian in its native environment as he takes you along with him from "the back of the cathedral" ever closer to the choir. He goes on to map out the evolution of Gregorian chant in depth, from its beginnings in Roman Catholic liturgy to its termination as part of everyday worship at Vatican II. If it is this kind of extensive historical treatment you seek, then buy this book.
However, be forewarned: if all you want is a better understanding and appreciation of plainchant purely through a knowledge of its mechanics (classification of different types of chant, melodic contour, texts used, etc.) you might come away unfulfilled, if not overloaded. Some time is indeed spent on this, but the focus is mainly a historical one.
Mr. Crocker does speak eloquently, at times almost philosophically. Thanks to this, you not only gain a thorough understanding of where chant "came from," but you walk away from the choir and out of the cathedral with a profound sense of affinity for this old and venerable sound.
You also leave with a strangely immediate awareness of your European roots.
Then again, such is the power of Gregorian chant; that it in some way, somehow, seems "familiar" to us, like something we once knew well but had forgotten. Mr. Crocker delves into this phenomenon, and tries to help us understand why this is -- an account which I personally found fascinating.
The compact disc is unspectacular in itself but a perfect learning companion to the book. No technical knowledge of music is assumed. Whether you buy this book now or later, it is an indispensable addition to any collection of tomes on plainsong, whether you be an enthusiastic novice or a weathered scholar.

One of the most surprising musical fads of recent years is the craze for Gregorian chant, a musical form whose recordings were once largely restricted to the pages of the Musical Heritage Society catalog and the output of obscure religious labels. Now chant in its various permutations is big business and something to be greatly hyped by mainstream record companies. Hopping onto the plainsong bandwagon is this book, a handsomely illustrated volume of essays and thoughts on assorted styles of chant, complete with a compact disc of examples tucked into a sleeve in the back. This book should satisfy any curiosity on the subject for most people who are neither monastic nor musicians.
Book Description
This superb anthology coordinates with The Norton Recordings (4- or 8-CD set) and provides scores for most of the works discussed in The Enjoyment of Music (Standard, Shorter, and Chronological versions). Orchestral scores and scores for instrumental chamber pieces are highlighted, enabling students to follow along after minimal instruction. Each score is accompanied by brief analytical commentary.

The Norton Scores vol. 1.......2000-05-25
This text book was used in my music history class. I felt that it provided a fairly comprehensive overview of the span of time and composers it covers. It was especially valuable when used with the accompanying CDs. The info given about each composer and the featured piece was very helpful. Usually, the pieces chosen to represent each composer were good examples and in many cases inspired further study. My only real complaint about this anthology is that they don't always put the whole piece or movement in the book.It would be nice to have a score reference that would be more complete in this way.

A classic, but now superceded.......2000-01-12
Apel's book on chant was the standard work on the subject until David Hiley's Western Plainchant: A Handbook was published in 1993. Nevertheless, I turn to Apel again and again for his analyses of the standard phrases found in certain genres of chant (Great Responsories, Graduals, Tracts). Its an eminently readable book, and still a "must have" for students of Gregorian chant.
It's a complete book on Gregorian Chant.......1999-02-14
It's one of the most complete books on Gregorian Chant. Now there is an important italian edition, by LIM (Libreria Musicale Italiana), Lucca, 1998. It's translated and brought up-to-date by the italian musicologist Marco Della Sciucca.
Book Description
1930. By compressing the Solesmes teaching within the narrow limits of a general textbook, Dom Sunol has rendered good service of the Gregorian cause. It was prepared under the direct supervision of the Solesmes Benedictine Fathers at Quarr Abbey, who supplied invaluable help on almost every page, mainly in the direction of ensuring greater accuracy, clearing up obscure passages, simplifying technical points and generally making the book more accessible to the ordinary student of plainsong.
