Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Textbook or Addition to Personal Library.......2007-04-09
I purchased this book for my Literature class. Unfortunately we did not get to read all of the works. I have fallen in love with this book and I hope to keep it for many many years. Some of the works can be boring but if you keep an open mind and concentrate on the ideas, language, and meaning you will understand even the most boring of works.
An absolutely delicious anthology..........2006-02-18
I purchased this book for a class, but was delighted to discover that I will definitely want to hang onto it afterwards. The translations chosen for the 'Ancient World' portion are, for the most part, delightfully vivid and capture the spirit of the original language. I also like the layout - the margin size is just perfect for taking notes.

Customer Reviews:
Vampire book.......2007-09-22
I am having a lot of trouble getting into this book. Not my cup of tea really. I think I prefer my vampires in a historical setting ala Dracula.
Great Book.......2007-09-06
This is a really great book and it was delivered to me in a timely manner.
Just fun!.......2007-08-31
Any time I describe the concept behind this series to someone(ex-cop with night blindness teams up with a vampire to help her with night work), they laugh and then go get a pencil and paper so they can write it down. I ate this first volume up in a couple of days and ran out to get the next two. These are interesting and engaging, and don't take themselves too seriously. If you like Laurell K. Hamilton and Karen Armstrong, you'll probably like Tanya Huff, too.
Vampire.......2007-07-03
These books are good if you like vampire books. These are the books that Lifetime TV are basing their new show Blood Ties on. I liked the show so I ordered the books to read.
I wish I'd found this series earlier..........2007-06-20
Like several other people, I bought this book because of the TV show "Blood Ties", which I enjoyed, but found cheesy upon occassion. I expected the books to be similar, but was pleasantly surprised.
These novel focus on the actual mystery/action/conflict. There is some sexual tension and little bit of sex, but it more alluded to than shoved in your face (no detailed sex scenes, YAY!!!). The characters of Vicki, Celluci, and Henry are 3-D and well thought out. There are snippits from Henry's past, which I love. It makes him more of a character than on the TV show where he just shows up, does the vampy thing, and goes on. Vicki is an amazing strong heroine who takes no crap from anyone.
As someone else stated, the first novel follows the TV Pilot exactly. I already knew what was going to happen, so it was a little dull. Not because of the writing though. The second novel was very good, with a family of werewolves who are being killed systematically by silver bullets.
Another thing I like about these novels were the "villians". Instead of just pure evil people, like in so many other novels, these villians are fairly normal people who slowly are tempted into evil. Nice touch and more believable.

In a distant, timeless place, a mysterious prophet walks the sands. At the moment of his departure, he wishes to offer the people gifts but possesses nothing. The people gather round, each asks a question of the heart, and the man's wisdom is his gift. It is Gibran's gift to us, as well, for Gibran's prophet is rivaled in his wisdom only by the founders of the world's great religions. On the most basic topics--marriage, children, friendship, work, pleasure--his words have a power and lucidity that in another era would surely have provoked the description "divinely inspired." Free of dogma, free of power structures and metaphysics, consider these poetic, moving aphorisms a 20th-century supplement to all sacred traditions--as millions of other readers already have. --Brian Bruya
Book Description
A brilliant man's philosophy on love, marriage, joy and sorrow, time, friendship and much more. Originally published in 1923 - translated into more than 20 languages. With 12 full page drawings by Gibran.

left speechless.......2007-10-05
Please excuse me for writing a review that isn't really "a review." Others may, but I find no words to even begin to describe this book - they would just manage to do it injustice. All that I can say is that it is truly a Gift; a Gift left for humanity.
I can already forsee that this is going to be the book of resource I reach for when I need a lifting.
Peace,
David
On Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet.......2007-08-28
This book was originally given to me by my husband after he heard a recording of it many years ago. I found this book to be the basis of living a good life and have through the years, referred back to it whenever I felt the need to be reinforced in my thinking on the many subjects it contained. My favorite chapters are: On Love, On Marriage, and On Children, in Gibran's words,"For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday".
I have given copies of this book to many friends and it always surprised me that some view it as too idealistic while others have loved it the way I did and were happy to read the soothing words whenever they felt they had lost their focus.
I LOVE this book!
Beautiful philosophy.......2007-08-23
I bought this book for my son who had his stolen from him and was in despair. He likes the beautiful poetic resonance and in looking through the book, I agree. This is a book for sensitive souls, beautifully written and illustrated by the author.
The Prophet.......2007-08-02
The prophet by Kahlil Gibran is a very beautiful, inspiring writing which really resonated within me, it felt as truth. I feel that with good patience and deep contemplation, this book can lead you to a profound understanding of your own life and all others around you.
I first read about Kahlil Gibran in a book called The Lost Teachings of Atlantis. That book answered all my spiritual questions about the meaning of Life, who and what we are and more in a very easily understandable manner and all of it corresponds with the writing of Kahlil Gibran. I HIGHLY recommend reading that book also.
The Prophet - .......2007-07-17
The Prophet provides relevant insights and messages that stand the test of time. It's the sort of book to have available for reading again and again as the messages apply to life many times over.

I was accidently sent another book in my mailing package. I sent that one back with a note that it was the wrong product. i have not yet received the Magic Tree House book set.
My daughter loves these books.......2007-08-09
My daugther just could not put down these books after she had received them. She finished 12 books in less than a week! I am going to get the rest of this series for her soon.
Great for 1st-3rd Graders.......2007-07-28
While the writing isn't great, the stories are certainly entertaining, and are great reading for 1st-3rd Graders. The stories follow two siblings, Jack and Annie, who are magically transported to various places, and the various settings set the stage for some very fascinating, to the young reader, tales they will come to treasure.
my son loves these books!.......2007-07-07
I've been reading to my son since he was two weeks old. He just had his fourth birthday, and I gave him this Magic Tree House box set. I thought he'd get bored pretty quick since there aren't illustrations on every page, but I was wrong. We read the first book in an afternoon, and he wanted to move straight on to the next one. We've since finished the first four and I've ordered the next box set, and while we wait we're re-reading the first four. Fantastic books!
Good starter book series.......2007-05-12
Good books to help me and my grandchildren communicate. We started a book discussion club. Great quality time.

Customer Reviews:
love it.......2007-09-09
My infant loves this book. She loves every story in it. Some are really easy; some are a little harder. It gives a parent the opportunity to challenge their child. If they want to be read to, read a hard one, if they don't really care, read an easy, fun one. It's a great collection.
Dr. Suess for Everyone.......2007-08-13
My husband and I picked this anthology up at Sam's Club (for a really good price, but I only saw it there that one time) about a year or so ago and we have not regretted it. Our children enjoy hearing these stories over and over.
The "Sleep Book" included in this book is one of my new favorites. It really helps my children (ages 2 and a half and 11 months) settle down for bed.
I agree that it is not really a book that young children can hold because it is too heavy, but I can manage pretty well holding it while reading to my young children. My children love looking at the pictures and listening to the words with the "magical rhythms". Sometimes they play as I read and come over occasionally to view the illustrations.
This is a very good book. My children love it and I love it too!
can't beat it.......2007-07-31
It is awesome because it has so many awesome books for such an awsome price my daughter loves it. Must own
Perfect.......2007-07-22
This is what a compilation should be; it's stuffed with "greatest hits" and extra information. It's fulfilling on its own but left me wanting to explore further. It can be enjoyed in nuggets or read in long sittings. On top of all other merits, it's reasonably priced, especially for such a sturdy and handsomely bound volume. I disagree with other reviewers that it's too bulky--as a child that's what I loved about Dr. Suess books the most--they were huge to my small hands. I felt like I was reading a "big people" book even though they were simple enough for a beginning reader to enjoy. A purist will be dismayed that the layout of the original pages of the individual books has been changed in some cases, but all the artwork is represented so it's a minor quibble (in contrast to many volumes of "Alice In Wonderland" or the Narnia books where pages of illustrations are missing).
The quality of the content is unquestionable--time hasn't diminished these works in the slightest; the messages underneath the simple, quirky, weird rhymes/imagery are more relevant today than ever, and just as captivating. The biographical sections and essays are informative but brief, they don't interrupt the fun.
If you are a fan or, like me, someone who has been away from "Suess-land" far too long, and don't already possess the works in this collection, don't hesitate to pick up a copy today, you won't be sorry.
Suess for Adults.......2007-07-09
I originally bought this as a present for my sister-in-law's baby shower, but once I received the book, I had to keep it. If you loved Dr. Suess as a kid this is a book for you. Filled with the original stories and images, it also offers some short stories written by Suess, essays written about the man, and pictures. I wouldn't suggest it for young children, but it is a great addition to your bookcase!

Book Description
Information... Knowledge... Understanding... Wisdom...
From the ancient classics to the masterpieces of the 20th century, the Great Books are all the introduction you`ll ever need to the ideas, stories and discoveries that have shaped modern civilization. This collection of 517 classics in 60 beautifully bound volumes is color-coded into four subject categories: literature, history, philosophy, and science. And since this edition includes works from 20th century authors, it`s the most up-to-date collection of the Great Books ever.
Product Details
Reading and understanding great works by history`s outstanding minds has always been considered the substance of a liberal education. The Great Books of the Western World has been acclaimed as the greatest publishing venture of the 20th Century. The set now consists of 60 volumes, with 517 works by 130 authors spanning 30 centuries, on a total of 37,000 pages containing 29 million words. Among the Great Books` 130 authors, 47 are writers of imaginative literature; 29 are masters of mathematics and/or the natural sciences; 28 are historians or social scientists, and 28 or more are philosophers and/or theologians. (This totals 132 because William James and Alfred North Whitehead have made contributions in both of the latter two subject categories).
Volume Details
Volumes 1 and 2 of this collection is the Syntopicon, a unique two-volume guide (not sold separately) that enables you to investigate a particular idea and compare what different authors have to say about it. The Syntopicon comprises a new kind of reference work -- accomplishing for ideas what the dictionary accomplishes for words and the encyclopaedia accomplishes for facts. Also included is the Great Conversation, featuring fascinating background information, extensive timelines, photos, and quotes from the classic works and their authors.

The best of the best all in one volume.......2007-08-18
These books are worth their weight in Gold. You can find most, if not all, of these writings for free on the internet since there is no copyright anymore; however, if you are looking for physical books then this is the way to go. Very well made and if you go to the Britannica website you may a good deal or at least a payment plan for the hefty price.
Poorly Organized.......2007-08-15
I had heard of the Great Books Project some time ago but had never actually had a chance to see these translations until this past semester at my school library. They were located on the top floor right next to the bathroom so I sort stumbled into them by accident one night. After sifting through a few of these I can't say that I was anything other than supremely disapointed. It was a noble attempt on Adler's part but it just didn't pan out for a number of reasons.
I'm not one of these diversity crackpots and I personally think schools that use this collection (albeit losely) as a foundation for their curriculum (St. John's in Annapolis particularly) are vastly more rigorous, comprehensive, and rewarding than those of practically every other American University. Four years of science, three of mathematics, three of intensive Greek and French, weekly seminars in Western Literature and Philosophy. It's no wonder that this environment produces among the highest acceptance rates into top professional and graduate programs in the country.
However, as I mentioned before these schools use Adler's collection as more of a suggestion than anything else mostly because this hodgepodge of some 37,000 poorly translated and at times even obsolete pages of loseleaf paper couldn't possibly offer the coherence required of a college program.
To be fair though this was not Adler's intention with this collection. Still, one is left wondering what exactly Adler's intention was with all of this. One would assume that the intention was to get these books into as many homes and minds as possible. That's a great idea in principle but if folks aren't interest in reading these books individually what would lead you to believe that assembling them in one giant mass makes them more intriguing? Certainly he couldn't have done this to make the books more affordable ($1000+)...oh dear God, I believe he did.
I found the translations to be cumbersome, utterly oblivious to the language of the author's time and location, and unnecessarily small in size. Oh and the paper is of extremely low quality as well at least in the series I read out of.
These are all problems but what I find most unfortunate is the lack of coherence to the whole thing. First off, WHERE are the history books? Aside from the two big Greeks there are absolutely none to be found in the entire collection. Tens of thousands of pages with no history whatsoever to put any of into context for the young reader who I'll assume is the target audience of this collection.
Secondly, I support the attempt to expose the general public to the beauty of mathematics and especially science. But seriously, is there any point in adding something like Newton's Principia to this collection other than to show off? Really, what percentage of the population can make sense of a book like that? Cambridge prints short introductory texts to dozens of subjects in the sciences that are more relavent to that 99.99% of the population that doesn't have an advanced degree in Physics of Mathematics. Next.
Third, if you're selecting works based on influence then how do people like Kierkegaard, Marx and Nietzsche only get one of work apeice included whereas folks like Chaucer, Pascal and Ibsen get numerous selections? How can it be that Pascal has had more influence than a man whose philosophy spawned worldwide panic, violence and revolution for most of the 20th Century?
Finally, if you're going to try and produce a comprehensive collection of the Greatest the Western World has produced why not select each authors most notable contributions to that legacy. Nobody remembers Thomas Mann for "Death and Venice." Nobody remembers Joyce for "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man."
But then again I could be wrong. Regardless, I am still going to give this book 4 stars for fighting the good fight against relativism, multiculturalism and the general degeneration of the human race.
Great contents, but.......2006-09-01
Bid a new set from ebay and it arrived in two boxes. It has great contents, but:
1) The books are small in dimension, so print is small and not easy to read.
2) The paper is thin.
3) Need more pictures.
4) Some volumes are quite thin. It will be better either adding more contents, or combine volumes to make the whole set more manageable.
5) The set is listed at $1,195, which translates to about $20 per volume. Judging from the quality of the book, printing quality should be no more than $5 per volume. They should reduce price to make it more accessible.
Finest compilation of the writings of the most brilliant minds over the centuries past ever.......2006-08-17
These books were first published in 1952. Only 500 sets were published that year, a Private Library Collection it was called, and sold for $500.00 per set. My father was one of the original purchasers, and he passed them down to me when he died. (It's still even in its original custom made bookcase!)
This entire set contains the writings of the most brilliant minds over the centuries past, carefully compiled by the publishers, with a ten-year reading plan that will give the reader the most valuable of all gifts: knowledge. A must-read for any true scholar!
Cost effective when you consider your options..........2006-03-14
Regardless of minor squabbling over what should and shouldn't be included, this is a very good collection of western works. I'd call it great in fact, when you consider the amount you'd have to pay to purchase all these seperate, not to mention all the wading you'd do through some not-so-necessary reads.
Insert the rest of a 'look how big my words can be' and 'I read this while still in the womb' review here. I'm not feeling up to the pomp.

Book Description
RACE, CLASS, AND, GENDER, includes many interdisciplinary readings. The author's selection of very accessible articles show how race, class, and gender shape people's experiences, and help students to see the issues in an analytic, as well as descriptive way. The book also provides conceptual grounding in understanding race, class, and gender; has a strong historical and sociological perspective; and is further strengthened by conceptual introductions by the authors. Students will find the readings engaging and accessible, but may gain the most from the introduction sections that highlight key points and relate the essential concepts. Included in the collection of readings are narratives aimed at building empathy, and articles on important social issues such as prison, affirmative action, poverty, immigration, and racism, among other topics.

An Anthology review.......2007-04-21
I'm not a huge fan of the format. It's a compilation of a whole bunch of different articles. Many are interesting, but some just whine on and on. I thought they could have done a better job for the title, but I guess it did encompass all aspects. It was well written, but just an ok book.
Avoid at all costs!!!!!!.......2005-11-03
This book is chock full of hatred and inaccuracies. I was forced to read this book for a class and was disgusted from page one. How a teacher can assign this horror for a diversity class is beyond me. If you want indoctrination, then by all means read this nonsense.
Race Class and Gender: An Anthology .......2005-09-30
this book had no writting in it if it was not new it was like new
Excellent Reading.......2004-02-20
This book was amazing in its scope and varying perspectives on issues concerning "minority" Americans. Both editors and incredible and I personally am really looking forward to reading Patricia Hill Collins' lastest book, Black Sexual Politics.
a book with historical facts.......2001-06-06
this book covers all the necessary needs for a person to have counseling training to understand people from all different ethnicity background.

Gorgeous book.......2007-09-19
I bought this book for a good friend and she went bonkers when she saw it. I did too when I opened the box the day it came in the mail. I wanted to keep it for myself! The cover is beautiful, the pages are gold edged, and it is just a wonderful book!
Jane Austen: The Complete Novels, Deluxe Edition.......2007-09-03
For all those Jane Austen fans, what more could you ask for than to have all the works of Jane Austen beautifully bound in one book. This is a book that you can pass down to your Grandchildren. A great display piece for your bookshelf also. I will enjoy this for years to come, and it didn't cost me an arm and a leg which was another great surprise.
Jane Austen: The Complete Novels, Deluxe Edition (Library of Literary Classics).......2007-07-29
Wow! This is an unbelievably beautiful bound collection. It's almost too beautiful to use. It's an excellent price for the quality of the product. Imagine to cost of each book. I am looking forward to purchasing other collections of my favorite authors if the presentation is the same. Extremely fast delivery. Well worth It.
Too many errors..........2007-05-30
This is a lovely volume of Jane Austen's work and I would've given it 5 stars if there were less typographical errors dotted throughout the entire book.
pure genius.......2007-01-05
I personally love all of Austen's works so when I saw that they were all compiled together in this book and at such a great price I could not let the opportunity slip away. My personal favorite novel is Pride and Prejudice which along with Sense and Sensibility and Emma are some of her most famous works having been made into movies as well. However nothing is better than the novels themselves. As a young woman I cant say I can exactly relate to the characters in Austen's novels but I feel a connection with them because I am a young woman. Her novels depict a glimpse into the world of the young women of her time and though we live in very different times now, there are certain feelings that reamin exactly the same. I difinetly recommend all of these novels to any young woman out there because each of the protagonists in these novels is a heorine in her own right even if at times we find they are greatly flawed. It is their flaws that make them so human. This is a great collection to give a daughter or a niece or any young female in your life because it is something that was written by an intelligent woman about intellegant women.
