Book Description
Featuring chapters by the world's foremost scholars in music education and cognition, this handbook is a convenient collection of current research on music teaching and learning. This comprehensive work includes sections on arts advocacy, music and medicine, teacher education, and studio instruction, among other subjects, making it an essential reference for music education programs. The original Handbook of Research on Music Teaching and Learning, published in 1992 with the sponsorship of the Music Educators National Conference (MENC), was hailed as "a welcome addition to the literature on music education because it serves to provide definition and unity to a broad and complex field" (Choice). This new companion volume, again with the sponsorship of MENC, explores the significant changes in music and arts education that have taken place in the last decade. Notably, several chapters now incorporate insights from other fields to shed light on multi-cultural music education, gender issues in music education, and non-musical outcomes of music education. Other chapters offer practical information on maintaining musicians' health, training music teachers, and evaluating music education programs. Philosophical issues, such as musical cognition, the philosophy of research theory, curriculum, and educating musically, are also explored in relationship to policy issues. In addition to surveying the literature, each chapter considers the significance of the research and provides suggestions for future study. Covering a broad range of topics and addressing the issues of music education at all age levels, from early childhood to motivation and self-regulation, this handbook is an invaluable resource for music teachers, researchers, and scholars.

Customer Reviews:
A Great reference and a good starting point.......2007-03-15
This is a very useful starting point when recording a new instrument for the first time. It gives you in depth details about micing positions with clear pictures to support what the author is writing about.
The author also explains in a brief way the use of everyday studio gear wich along with all the recording techniques reviewed in the other chapters makes this book a must have in any studio, for beginners as a great starting point and for seasoned pros as an alternative and sometimes a challenge to the way they have captured audio and worked in the studio their whole life.
"And what do you do?".......2007-02-17
"Same thing as everyone else you interviewed".
Very little changes between the interviewed "experts" except mic selection and placement. Pretty basic stuff. If you have a great sounding studio, you use it. If you don't, maybe you should find one.
Some very good advice on mic placement.......2007-01-31
This book seems to be written primarily towards recording rock, pop, etc. small groups. There is a lot of advice on mic placement for drumset for instance. For my use - recording saxophone quartet - there wasn't a lot of help. The advice on mic placement in general, however, was definitely worth the price of the book.
Good Companion.......2006-08-08
This one kept me very good company on an overnight flight to Vienna from New York. Riveting stuff, not least because there was a good chance I was going to have to oversee the micing of a full-orchestra and choir on one of the dates! Luckily for all concerned, my nascent skills were not called upon, but I certainly felt a lot more qualified after reading Owsinski's tome. Some of the gear described might be above the head of home/project studio owners, but nonetheless Owsinski's straightforward and eminently readable work offers fascinating insights into the vast art of recorded sound.

Book Description
The Super Sight-Reading Secrets book has provided the answers to sight-reading problems for thousands of pianists and keyboardists! This self-study method teaches sight-readers how to increase their visual perception, and keyboard orientation. Specifically, the drills and exercises teach how to look ahead and to play any note on the keyboard without looking at their hands.
Customer Reviews:
So far so good!.......2007-03-23
I'm still on the first exercises. But so far so good!
I'm sure I'll be able to sight-read once I complete all the exercises.
It's straightforward and a very thin book, which is nice because I've got a lot other things to carry (textbooks, binders).
Super Sight-Reading Secrets: An Innovative, Step-By-Step Program for Musical Keyboard Players of All Levels.......2006-12-14
The exercises the author provides help improve the chain of skills needed to sight read. You work on each link of the chain separately and progressively so that the learning work is doable and at any point in the process you skills get a balanced improvement. I was fluent in treble clef, but only knew a few notes of bass. A few weeks later I can easily recognize all the notes in the bass clef.
Good book for the money.......2006-03-26
I wouldn't say that this book will make you a perfect sight reader, or even that it contains everything you need to know. In fact, it actually references a lot of different books to practice (book of scales and chords, Bach chorales). However, for $10, it is worth the buy. It contains helpful information and useful methods to follow. If you do everything he says in the book, it will take a while to get through and will provide you with needed techniques, especially if you are a beginner; you just have to stick with it until completion to see results.
Chuan Chang highly recommends.......2006-01-14
I have yet to read this sight-reading book, but I am a big fan of Chuan Chang's Fundamentals of Piano Practice, wherein he gives this analysis:
Richman, Howard, "Super Sight-Reading Secrets", 1986, 48P., no references.
This is the best book on sight reading. It contains all the fundamentals; they are described in complete detail, teaching us all the correct terminology and methodologies. It starts from how to read music, for the beginner, and advances logically all the way to advanced sight reading levels; it is especially helpful for the beginner. It is also concise, so you should read the whole book once before starting any actual drills/exercises. Starts with how to psychologically approach sight reading. Basic components of sight reading are Pitch, Rhythm, and Fingering. After an excellent introduction to music notations, appropriate drills are given. Then the sight reading process is broken down into its component steps of visual, neural, muscular, and aural processes that start with the music score and end up as music. This is followed by drills for learning "keyboard orientation" (finding the notes without looking at the keyboard) and "visual perception" (instantly recognizing what to play). Depending on the person, it may take from 3 months to 4 years to learn; should practice every day. Finally, about one page of ideas on advanced sight reading. A MUST READ.
Mr. Chang also continuously refers to and highly recommends:
1. Fink, Seymour, "Mastering Piano Technique", 1992
2. Sandor, Gyorgy, "On Piano Playing", 1995
(...)
Not very good.......2004-10-25
This "book" is more like a short document you could download off the internet. There are hardly any exercises in the book. The author asks you to exercise on other artists works using various methods. The whole book could be summarized on one page if you ask me. Also, half the book is dedicated to teaching you how to read music. Having played piano for 20 years, this half of the book was just wasted paper.
Book Description
This method and resource handbook for music education students offers an overview of basic instructional techniques with relevant musical examples; discusses selection, care, and assembly of instruments; and supplies a complete bibliography of educational materials. Throughout the text's coverage of fundamentals, special emphasis is placed on developing ideas for innovative teaching strategies.
Customer Reviews:
Best Available - Wish there were more.......2006-07-21
I use this text extensively in my woodwind class. The double reed sections are excellent. The saxophone section is fine, but a bit short on information. There are several inaccuracies in the flute section (scientific, historical), and our flute professor disagrees with the information on embouchure and technique. The clarinet section is also weak. The author has some strange ideas on teaching embouchure and other skills, and there are inaccuracies within this section as well.
I use this and have students make corrections and notes in their copies of this book since there is nothing better available. I would like to see an updated version with corrections made and more consistent organization of material for each of the woodwinds. I would also like to see the illustrations revised so that they are more accurate. (I like a lot of the information in the Westphal book that is its competitor, but the Westphal is dense reading and very, very old.)
Fine Overview, with few inaccuracies.......2000-07-19
Woodwind players are much like trumpet players' about their mouthpieces, or violinists' about their strings....each has an opinion. The separate authors who write the wwodwind chapters, also have their opinions, a few tricks and techniques that are not mainstream, but clearly would work for most people. The best Woodwind Technque book on the market.
Book Description
Jazz Theory Handbook is a complete guide to all the essential topics of jazz theory, suitable for all treble instruments. Its approach is clear and concise, realistic and practical. This book will help you to understand how contemporary jazz players think, and to apply theory concepts in your own playing. Subjects are introduced progressively, with each new one based on those introduced before. Topics include chord building, harmonic movement, modes, II-V-I licks, polychords, blues, rhythm changes, how to learn tunes, practice techniques, playing outside, and more. All of the book's musical examples are performed on the accompanying CD, along with sample solos and 3 play-along tracks with a great rhythm section. Jazz Theory Handbook is designed for both self-study and classroom use.
Customer Reviews:
Great for any musician who wants to learn jazz.......2006-02-27
This is a great book for learning the structure and theory behind jazz. Everything you need to start is here, although I would recommend this book to already established musicians. It might be hard for a beginner to utilize this information. The writer is very systematic in his presentation of the info, and he leaves no stone unturned in his thorough explanation of jazz theory.
The Clearest Jazz Instruction Ever.......2001-09-27
There are many jazz theory books out, but Peter Spitzer's new Jazz Theory Handbook (complete with CD) stands out as the most thorough, yet easiest to comprehend. It's a must-read BEFORE reading any of the others. Mr. Spitzer carefully defines all his terms, then leads the musician step-by-step to the kind of clear understanding that leads to hands-on playing. The layout and typography are inviting, not overloaded as some books are. As a piano teacher, performer, and jazz lover for some 30 years, I simply can't say enough good about it.

Book Description
How do musical skills develop in children? What factors influence their development? What factors inhibit their development? Why do we like certain music during childhood and adolescence? Can music affect the development of other cognitive abilities in children, and how? These are just some of the questions considered in this fascinating new work. The Child as Musician is an authoritative and comprehensive handbook of musical development from conception to late adolescence. Within 24 chapters by leading specialists, it celebrates the richness and diversity of the many different ways in which children can engage in and interact with music. The 24 chapters have been organized according to five sections: The first section (Development) examines the critical months and years from conception to the end of infancy. It looks at how the musical brain develops, ways of understanding musical development, and the nature of musicality. Section two (Engagement) scrutinizes claims about the non-musical benefit of exposure to music, for example that music makes you smarter. This is followed by four thorough reviews dealing with musical preference and taste, literacy, aesthetic identity and the perception of emotion in music. Section three (Differences) focuses on those issues that help explain and identify individual differences. It includes chapters examining how children develop their motivation to study music, conceptions of giftedness and talent, and two chapters on children with special needs. Section four covers skills that can develop as a result of exposure to music. It considers the informal activities associated with musical play and the use of computers and technology. There are also chapters dealing with the acquisition of vocal and instrumental skills, as well as the individual and social worlds of children's musical creativity. The final section of the book discusses five different Contexts: The chapter on historical perspectives provides readers with information that will assist them in making comparisons between how children have learned and developed their musical capacities in the past, with current opportunities. This is extended by two additional chapters that focus on children's involvement in music in non-western cultures. The book concludes with two chapters focusing on youth musical engagement and the transition from child to adult. Truly a landmark publication in music education and music psychology, this is a book that will fascinate both students and researchers - inspiring them to think deeply about the many different ways in which music can affect children's lives and the quality of life in communities throughout the world.

Dry but useful overview of basic music theory.......2004-03-16
The title's a little misleading, but this is a concise, useful overview of basic music theory, from basic scales to counterpoint. A good basic reference and for a lot of non-classical musicians probably all the theory you really need.
