5 out of 5 stars Losing Weight and Feeling Great.......2007-09-11

This book has been a godsend in my life. I had lost 8 pounds by starting walking, got stuck, lost another 8 pounds through Weight Watchers and got stuck again for several months. Finally, I decided to try Dr. McDougall's plan. I had the book for quite some time, but didn't think I could follow his plan. Wow! What a surprise! Not only am I having fun with it, I've lost a total of 22 so far on the McDougall Plan with only 9 left to reach my idea weight and it has been faster than anything I've tried before - about 1.5 - 2 pounds per week. It has been easier than I could have imagined because I am never hungry. For the first time in my life, my body tells me when I am full and I can stop eating. I have always loved starches anyway, and this diet is perfect for me. I've started trying a lot of the recipes and have been thoroughly happy with most of them. I have only one disagreement with Dr. McDougall and that is in the area of plant fats (unprocessed) like avocados. I eat them quite often and am still losing weight and feel great. If I slow down in my weight loss, I may try to cut down, but right now I'm doing too well to change anything.

Dr. John McDougall is that rare doctor in American medicine: One who tells the truth about the drugs or surgery stance of the AMA. Most refreshing is his absolute candor, leading the reader to wonder at times why his medical license is stil in tact. For those who seek medical truth, it doesn't get any straighter John McDougall.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting information.......2007-03-20

I purchased this book after visiting Dr. McDougall's web site. Actually, almost all of the information in this book can be found at his web site, so if you are looking for new recipes or other information not posted on his site, this is not the book for you. You might want to buy something else, a newer book or DVD. This book outlines his recommended diet and lifestyle for optimal health including the rationale for avoiding certain foods and including others - basically avoiding all animal products and lowering fat intake. There is a 12-day diet plan included as well as various recipes and information on a number of health problems that can be helped by healthy eating. Overall, very interesting reading and a good start for anyone wanting to follow a low-fat vegan diet.

5 out of 5 stars Changed my life.......2007-01-12

This book, and all Dr. McDougall's works, are incredible. So straightforward and sensible. You won't be disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars The worst diet in the world- & the most unhealthy.......2006-04-23

I bought this book thinking it would help my Arthritis and aid me in losing weight. I was so wrong. The food was totally unpalatable. I could not even gag it down. I was hungry ALL THE TIME. I ate and ate and ate. My skin ,which was already dry, became like parchment paper. I developed bumpy skin on the backs of my arms and on my thighs. I had no energy. It was the worst diet I have ever been on (and I've been on them all). Don't waste your money on the Mcdougall books. A better one would be Dr. Mary Enigs book, Eat Fat, Lose Fat. I went on this one and added cod liver oil to my diet and I lost 125 pounds in just under a year with almost NO hanging skin. This diet is rich in fat soluble vitamins which nourish the skin. I was never hungry and the bumps on my skin and my arthritis cleared up completely. This is the real way we are supposed to eat. Even if you think eating lots of saturated fat is bad, get the book anyway, by the time your done reading it, you will be a believer because you'll understand how and why the body uses nutrients the way it does. A book everyone should read. If I could give the Mcdougall books a '0' I would.

5 out of 5 stars Choose your weight. Choose ANY weight!.......2006-11-22

This diet works. That is the first and the last word.

You can eat as much as you like (of the right foods). You will never feel hungry. You can snack as much as you can bear.

Want your svelte twenty year old body back? This diet will do it.

Tired of carrying an extra fifty pounds? This diet will eliminate it without any sacrifice.

Giving up refined flour products (toast) was vital for this satisfied customer; weight loss went from 0 lbs back to -9 lbs per month. Amazing.

Requirements? A little will power. "Do or do not. There is no try." - Yoda.

"Oh no. I couldn't do that. I couldn't give up (meat, milk, cheese, oils)" is your inner dragon talking. Try these recipes. You should notice that you are eating better than ever before.

(Full disclosure. Someone here kept eating 3-4 fish portions / month; purely for the anti-stroke effect, no doubt. Honest. But only 3oz / meal; after two weeks without meat that is a real feast; a Pritiken-sized portion).

These rare feasts helped compliance otherwise enormously. Willpower and self denial alone don't work in the long term. So you CAN eat the wrong foods. Just not every day. Or week. Or month. It is NOT that you can never eat meat, cheese etc again. It IS that you can eat them once every second Thanksgiving (or calculate % non-compliance here) ); which is as often as McDougall says he eats turkey.

Sauces are far more vital than rare feasts. General Tsao, kung pao, thai chili, teriyaki, black bean and mexican hot sauces all make the food an endless everyday treat. Happily they all meet the diet's requirements for limited fat.

Can't do it? Willpower of a gnat? That's a real pity. You could start with partial adherence; get used to it; then gradually increase the compliance. % compliance is entirely up to you. Better to have tried and failed than not to have tried at all? Plus the secret is: following the diet becomes extremely easy as it becomes a daily habit. In about a year.

Now before we eat let us say grace. "Thank you Oh Lord for John and Mary McDougall's diet. Good food. Good drink. Good God. Let's eat."

Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Very good though not the best method.......2006-08-26

Several years ago I lost a lot of weight with this diet. I enjoyed the food and felt very good, with increased energy. However, it works better for some people than others. There are a few possible deficiencies - Dr. McDougall is very strict on avoiding fats, and I found that unless I supplemented the diet with ground flaxseed every day (for extra Omega 3 fat) I began to develop skin problems. Also, it is a starch-based diet, and for many people, even healthy starches can impair weight loss and lead to food cravings and overeating.

Dr. McDougall is also excessively concerned about the consumption of even vegetable protein (which from all I can learn is not harmful like animal protein), so he encourages eating sometimes relatively nutrient-deficient foods like potatoes and limits more nutritious but protein-heavy beans, as well as limiting fruit for fear of causing high triglycerides. (The high triglycerides actually often are encouraged by excessive starch intake.) He also seems a little too comfortable with the use of overly processed foods like pasta (though not on the Maximum Weight Loss diet) and salty/sugary condiments, which can reduce weight loss for some people.

Much as I admire Dr. McDougall for his ground-breaking research and lifelong devotion to helping people regain their health, I do think that the very best weight loss book available today, based on extensive, thoroughly up-to-date research as well as years of clinical practice, is Dr. Fuhrman's "Eat To Live." This is the closest anybody's ever come to a diet tailored to the exact needs of the human body, both for maximum weight loss and maximum good health. I can feel the difference in my vitality and energy when I'm on Dr. Fuhrman's program, which is based on the most nutrient-dense foods available - green vegetables, along with fruits, beans, and a little nuts and seeds. Healthy starches, although still good foods, come a poor fifth in the nutrient ratings and are limited on this program, particularly for weight loss. After a while, you find that truly nutritious food is much, much more satisfying than anything else. I was really shocked to discover that eating enough romaine lettuce completely eliminated my bad food cravings!

Both weight loss and health benefits on Dr. Fuhrman's diet are if anything even more spectacular than on Dr. McDougall's, and in the long term I think Dr. Fuhrman's diet will result in the best level of health. I find it also more varied, more pleasant, and more flexible.

Dr. McDougall's program is a huge advance over most diets, and all his books are educational and well worth reading. However, for the most sophisticated yet simple information on how to reach your highest possible level of health and lose weight the most easily, you should also check out Dr. Fuhrman.

1 out of 5 stars Too Austere .......2006-07-23

I'm happy so many have succeeded at this plan. It sounded really good to me, but after following it for about two weeks, I didn't lose any weight and was very susceptible to refined carbs. Oh and I've been VERY bloated from all the high-residue foods.

Now, I've been vegan for some time so that was no problem. But to give up all breads & pastas was too much. Not to mention any nuts or nut butters. Or soy milk & tofu.

Ugh. I like T. Colin Campbell's ("The China Study") approach (though I didn't lose any weight either) of whole foods & plant-based.

McDougall's diet, while sounding great, is too austere for me. I'd much rather have fewer calories and include whole-grain breads, nuts, etc. Much more satisfying.

I did like the section on sleep-deprivation though and have noticed the depressing effect of normal sleep time. That alone was worth reading most of the book. But I wouldn't pay full price for it (I bought mine used).

5 out of 5 stars Game Set Match!.......2005-11-28

I've tried them all. Arkins got some weight off fast and made me sick in the process. I LOVE food and LOTS of it and this was the one program that let me have it. 97 1/2 pounds lost while eating 75-80% carbs (good ones, of course) This really works!

5 out of 5 stars It works, of course........2005-10-02

Not that a fair amount of other diets have not pointed out the same thing, but Dr. McDougall makes a great effort to stress how the rich Western diet has become so standard that we are all convinced that eating gobs of meat, fats, and junk food are normal. Bear in mind that the McDougall plan has been around for many years...and although it's never been a huge fad like Atkins, McDougall has stayed around and still remains mostly relevant. Alot of people will find his plan too restrictive - vegan in essence (but not by creed...he doesn't care one way or another about the ethics of eating animals, just the physical result), it takes a LOT of preparation and getting used to. A friend and I tried this plan around 5 years ago, and the first two weeks were a bit of a struggle - you realize how used to salty, sweet, buttery, creamy foods we all are, and his recipes seem bland and hard to take (and I agree with what a previous reviewer wrote, that the recipes are a little too on the Tex-Mex side). Then you get used to the concept of eating "pure food"...and the benefits start to kick in. My friend and I did start losing weight, seemingly without trying - we were packing our faces with McDougall approved food and definitely not starving - but the other benefit was that I had more energy, and was more likely to wake up earlier and be more alert and cheerful and ready to start my day right away.

After 2 months or so, my friend and I went out for dinner and broke the diet. The next morning we both had the worst hangover we'd had in a while - from food. I felt sluggish and letharic and greasy. And, eager to get back to eating vegan.

McDougall says himself that meats, dairy, and junk food have their place. I think a lot of people miss his point when reading his opinion on eliminating these foods from your daily diet. At one time, rich foods were "feast foods" that were prepared on special occasions - turkey for thanksgiving, ham on easter, cake and ice cream on a birthday. Today it is easter for breakfast, thanksgiving for lunch, and every day is a birthday. The point is not that you have to swear off these foods for the rest of your life - eat them on special occasions, sure, but not every day. The point is, to recognize that it is much, much healthier to build your daily diet around vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. McDougall was saying this way before the Food Pyramid was even changed (twice - once to give grains and vegetables the top spot, then again to emphasize vegetables even more and also bring attention to the fact that there are other foods in the protein group besides meat).

He brings up a few interesting points that, although I'm not sure of the facts to back up his statements, definitely make an impression. One, is that Americans overconsume protein, overestimate our need for it, and assume that we can only get our protein from meat. We're led to believe this by the meat industry, of course. You can just as easily meet your protein needs from beans, seeds and nuts. Vegetarians have been arguing this for years. Two, is that the milk industry pounds into our heads that (cow's) milk is essential to prevent osteoperosis. He makes the point that Americans consume more milk than any other country and we also have the highest rate of osteoperosis than any other country. A kind of of silly example he makes - Giraffes eat nothing but leaves, and you'd think an animal like that would really need healthy bones, right? The truth is that you can also get calcium from other foods, like broccoli, spinach, and tofu. Morgan Spurlock addressed the same issue (from a junk food angle) of the food industry selling us a skewed view of the foods they sell, in the documentary "Supersize Me".

McDougall also advocated "grazing", what he called eating small meals rather than 3 large ones. Now we know that this is a good practice and it it much better suited for an even blood sugar level. When McDougall first publish his plan, it was a novel idea. Much easier on your insulin production and your energy levels, much easier on your apetite.

The downside - and there is a downside - is that eating McDougall long term is difficult unless you embrace it like a religious conversion. My friend and I slowly quit after about 6 months of fairly dedicated eating, because we were sick of all the extra effort. Friends and family are either hostile, feeling the need to defend their own eating choices and poking fun at yours, or well-meaning but clueless, inviting you to dinner and insisting you try their "vegetarian" casserole they took hours to prepare just for you, gobbed with oils and cream and cheese, and are hurt if you decline. It really is tough eating out, whether at restaurants or other people's houses - even ordering a salad is a hassle, since everything but garden salads have got meat or cheese stuck in them...and unless you order plain vinegar as a dressing, you're out of luck. I think McDougall recommends either using a lemon wedge for dressing - I never heard of a real person that would consider lemon a dressing - or carrying around your own dressing mix. Imagine going to dinner with friends and whipping dressing out of your purse - and what do men do without a purse to whip their dressing from, anyway? And it seems like all your spare time is given over to cooking, cooking, cooking...and you'll develop bigger muscles by carrying around all the food you'll need to eat throughout the day. Since it's so fresh and healthy, the whole foods he recommends are digested much easier and quicker and before you know it, you're hungry again. I found myself eating 6 minimeals throughout the day, from breakfast to pre-dinner, and believe me when I say I lugged a big grocery bag full of food back and forth to work every day. And you HAVE to do this, because it's not like you can go out for lunch and order something quick from the local deli. You might also wind up feeling alienated from friends and family because your new lifestyle is so different than theirs, and your needs have become so specialized that asking them to accomodate you turns you into one of the worst picky vegetarians that perpetuate the stereotype that all vegetarians are card-carrying pains in the neck.

Another bad point is the use of salt. McDougall assumes that his readers are attempting to lose weight or regulate their blood sugar - he doesn't take into consideration people with hypertension. Salt use is encouraged - and so is the use of salty condiments in order to make his recommended foods more flavorful; barbeque sauce, soy sauce, and salt, salt, salt. Canned foods are also encouraged, also high in salt...and in a few places he encourages the use of granulated sugar. Not great for diabetics.

To sum up, this is a great book to read (along with some of his others) to get a different outlook on the food industry in America, and inspiration and enthusiam for changing your own eating habits. It is by no means the be-all, end-all of diet books, and I don't think it should be regarded as the cure for every person's problem. I do think that it deserves credit for bringing attention to the fact that a lot of the reason why we are so chronically sick these days is that we are poisoning ourselves with over-processed, nutritionally vampirized, artificially "improved" foods and lost touch with the cause and effect of our bodies' fuel needs.

TRY the diet - give it your best shot, your most open mind, your most optimistic intentions, and ignore the maintsream media and "common knowledge" that tells you "everyone needs meat" or "but are you getting enough protein?" And, continue learning about the subject through the web and other books, even after you've finished The McDougall Plan. I think the best thing I took away with me after reading this book was a newfound interest in my own nutritional needs and a realization of how important it is to know for myself what is good for me to eat - because *I* know, not because the TV tells me so.

Women trust and rely on their doctors for medical guidance. "Unfortunately, that advice is sometimes biased or ill-informed," says John McDougall, M.D. "The consequence is that a lot of women choose treatments that are ineffective at best, or harmful at worst." In The McDougall Program for Women, he discusses the most common medical conditions affecting women, such as breast cancer, menopause, cardiovascular disease, and osteoporosis (don't miss his explanation of how high consumption of animal protein destroys bones). He describes how best to treat these conditions and the benefits and risks of the usual treatments. His solution to women's health problems isn't hormones, drugs, or surgery--it's diet and lifestyle changes, specifically a starch-based, vegetarian diet, moderate exercise, and eliminating the "most toxic of [your] bad habits," such as smoking.

McDougall is well known from his other books and his program at St. Helena Hospital in California, with a loyal bevy of followers who report tremendous health gains and weight loss by eating mainly bulky complex carbohydrates (whole grains, beans, legumes, starchy vegetables), no meat or dairy products, and no added oil. The 102 recipes show that this eating plan can be varied and tasty. This is no trendy diet-of-the-month scheme--McDougall includes 82 pages of scientific references that support his views. --Joan Price

Book Description

Dr. John McDougall has long been at the forefront of women's health care. First to publish a groundbreaking article showing the benefits of a low-fat diet for women with breast cancer in 1983, he continues to lecture regularly on women's health issues and has cared for tens of thousands of women who have benefited dramatically from his advice. Now he arms women with the facts needed to achieve a lifetime of good health in his timely, important, comprehensive new book The McDOUGALL Program for Women. Thoroughly covering general topics such as weight loss and exercise programs, Dr. McDougall also includes more specialized subjects like herbal treatments for the symptoms of menopause, dietary approaches to preventing osteoporosis, and balancing the positives and negatives of hormone replacement therapy. A comprehensive guide for women with specific health problems or those who simply seek a healthier lifestyle, The McDougall Program for Women belongs in every home reference library.

I am 20 years old and I have been following the McDougall Program for a year and a half now, and it has changed my life. I had been an ovo-lacto vegetarian for 3 years before I began this program. I had been overweight all my life, pretty much ever since I was born. Even as an ovo-lacto I was overweight and could never lose weight. I love to eat. I never had energy. I was always hungry and on a diet. I tried high-protein and it made me ill in scary ways. Then I discovered the McDougall program and I can eat happily and satisfy my appetite, lost 40 pounds and feel so much better. I feel good knowing that I only put healthy food in my body. Anyone who says you can't live without animial products doesn't know what they are talking about. If vegetarianism and veganism were dangerous the Seventh Day Adventist religion would have died out long ago. The notion that this program is restrictive is nonsense. Look at all the McDougall cookbooks there are. And almost any recipe is modifiable to the program with a few substitutions. If you think you need to eat fat, have some avocados or nuts or tofu. They won't clog your arteries like milk and eggs. This program is liberating and life-changing, and Americans would be much healthier if they adopted the McDougalls' principles.

4 out of 5 stars The McDougall program for women.......2002-08-14

This is a great , and interesting book for all women to read

1 out of 5 stars Good Intentions, Spotty Science.......2002-06-09

Reviewer #20 caught it: High-carbohydrate diets are not healthful, and the misbegotten advice of Dr. McDougall destroys a book with some valuable content on other topics.
The Good Intentions: "For a great many reasons...doctors often keep important information from patients. This practice is much more common in the relationship between male doctors and female patients. ...too many women take drugs they do not need, undergo an excessive amnount of unecessary surgery..." (p8). "Everything I am going to say is based on scientific evidence that has already been published in the world's leading medical and scientific journals." (p12).

The Spotty Science: In giving the caloric content of foods, Dr. McDougall mistakenly gives calories rather than kilocalories per gram (kcal/g) (p341). (The kilocalories are often written as Calories in other literature.) He correctly states that some fats are partially absorbed, cutting their caloric content in half; but is unaware that most common fats and oils provide only about 5 kcal/g (Kekwick A, Pawan GLS, "Body-Weight, Food, and Energy", The Lancet 19 Apr 1969:822-825.
Dr. McDougall fails to note that some of his supposed successes, like those of Pritikin and Ornish, may result from any of multiple interventions, including placebo effect, as well as the elimination of the toxic trans fatty acids along with all other fats (Oomen CM et al., "Association between trans fatty acid intake and 10-year risk of coronary heart disease in the Zutphen Elderly Study: a prospective population-based study", The Lancet 2001:357:746-751; the facts were known much earlier, as in the book "Know Your Fats".
Dr. McDougall has fallen for the cholesterol nonsense, hook, line and sinker (see Uffe Ravnskov, "The Cholsterol Myths", 2000; Mary C. Enig, "Know Your Fats", 2000; Kilmer S. McCully, The Heart Revolution", 2000; all available from Amazon.com). He also managed to avoid citing a single paper from any of these 3 key authors. Meta-analyses of 24 cholesterol-lowering diet trials found that there was no significant effect of low-fat diets on total death rates (Garber AM, et al., "Clinical Guideline, Part 2. Cholesterol Screening in Asymptomatic Adults", Ann Int Med 1996:124:518-531). Dr. McDougall cannot distinguish between complex carbohydrates and high-glycemic carbohydrates, so he is unaware that the wheat flour and potato in his recipes are death warrants for diabetics (Richard K. Bernstein, "Dr. Bernstein;s Diabetes Solution", 1997).
The downside of vegetarianism is omitted by Dr. McDougall... Some excellent advice on the low benefits of mammograms is marred by Dr. McDougall's failure to mention the hormetic benefit of the Xrays (Upton AC, "Radiation Hormesis: Data and Interpretations", Critical Rev Tox 2001:31(4&5):681-695), and the availability for 9 years of a simple blood test to detect cancer ....

Because of some serious misinformation in this book, it cannot be recommended at all despite its content of very good information on certain other topics. ---7 Jun 02

3 out of 5 stars Extreme vegan program.......2002-04-16

The description of this book didn't prepare me. This is a radical approach, which will undoubtedly be effective for people who are suffering serious health issues. But "every woman"? I don't think so. Can "every woman" live without any animal products at all, any oil, any wheat . . . it goes on and on. Only those who are really ill with food sensitivities will want to take this on. Although I can guarantee any woman who follows the program will lose weight!

5 out of 5 stars You either love McDougall or hate him.......2001-08-31

Well, of the 18 reviews (at the moment) of this book, there are 2 one-star reviews and the rest are 4 or 5 stars. McDougall is one of those that really generates strong reactions, positive and negative.

The reviewer that claims that high-starch diet is "scientifically proven" to mess with you insulin is off-base. High fat with high starch does, high starch with low fat does not.

As far as the reviewer that felt that McDougall displays a blase attitude about breast cancer and mamography... Well, what can I say? I'm not a woman and never had breast cancer. So I'm sure she would have a very different perspective than I would. But I really don't see how McDougall's attitude can be considered "blase". He is very passionate, you may disagree with him, but I don't see how he can be called "blase".

Now McDougall does have a very negative attitude towards radiation, chemo, and most "standard" treatments for cancers, such as breast cancers. But I think he makes a good case for his negative attitudes, they have not been shown to extend life, and significantly harm life.

Basically, McDougall believes the best treatment for cancer is prevention, and shows why he feels diet and lifestyle are the best preventions.

5 out of 5 stars Reverse and Prevent Heart Disease. Stop the Pain........2001-04-10

What's the number one killer in America? AIDS? Diabetes? Cancer? America's big killer is heart disease. In the United States, over 1.25 million heart attacks occur each year. To make matters worse many of those who suffer such attacks die before they reach a hospital. According to McDougall, "The cause of the most common form of heart disease is blockage of the arteries that supply the heart muscle. The blockages, results of the condition known as atherosclerosis, are caused by plaques forming along the internal walls of the arteries. Eating rich foods loaded with cholesterol and fats leads to the formation of these plaques. Heredity is also a factor, but should not be over emphasized because at least half the American population is susceptible. Besides, you can do nothing about changing your heredity."

But there is a lot you can change--and McDougall shows you what and how.

He answers all your questions, and most importantly, he backs up his statements with a stack of references to the medical literature. And unlike angioplasty and bypass surgery which are temporary, short-term relief measures (at best), McDougall provides long-terms solutions that remove the cause allowing your body to reverse blockages, and for those without blockages--how to prevent them. His primary emphasis is on a zero cholesterol, very low fat, plant based diet.

The book is fairly complete, includes answers to all your frequently asked questions, includes an abundance of tasty recipes, and explains many things your doctor hasn't told you (in most cases because he does not know). As a former professor in Internal Medicine at Univ. Hawaii Medical School Dr. McDougall does.

If Americans followed the advice in this book there would be little or no heart disease in this country. Best of all if you follow McDougall's advice and follow his dietary advice you will find that the "drugs that were intended to reduce chest pain should be decreased gradually in dosage and then discontinued entirely as soon as possible." This of course should ONLY be done under the supervision of a doctor.

I would buy three copies of this book. One for yourself, one for your loved one, and one for your doctor.

What your doctor does not know may kill you--and many cardiologists sadly are ignorant of the information provided in this book--though thanks in part to the efforts of doctors like McDougall, Ornish, Fuhrman ..., and others, many of them are learning.
