The Chairman of the Board has inspired a great many emotions--from hero-worship to withering contempt--and you'll find most of them documented in this intelligent compendium. The editors have dredged up some wonderful relics, like Bruce Bliven's 1944 rumination on what makes the Voice so magical in the first place ("Undoubtedly, just plain sex has a great deal to do with the whole matter"). But the essays, reviews, and memoirs cover every segment of Sinatra's career, including the end-game triumph (or travesty) of the best-selling "Duets."
Book Description
From the time he made hordes of hysterical fans swoon at the Paramount in 1942 up until the present day, Frank Sinatra has never been out of the public spotlight. With some 1,800 recordings, 60 film credits, two Oscars, numerous Grammys and a Grammy Legends Award, and the undying loyalty of millions of fans around the world, Sinatra has become an American hero. Songs sung by the Italian-American phenomenon, such as "New York, New York," "My Way,""Fly Me to the Moon," and "That's Life" are now among the undisputed classics of American popular music. In The Frank Sinatra Reader, Leonard Mustazza and Steven Petkov have brought together for the first time a singular selection of writings about the famous singer that focuses on his music and his legendary voice. A unique anthology of reviews, photographs, and memoirs, many of them back in print for the first time in decades, this collection tells the story of Sinatra's extraordinary musical career from its inception to the present. We see Sinatra as a teen phenomenon and follow his rise and fall as a solo performer, his comeback as a mature recording artist with Capitol Records, and his reign as a powerful and influential personality in the '60s. Lastly, the book contemplates Sinatra's ability to endure and triumph in a changing musical world. Included among the prominent writers, musicians, and journalists that recount and applaud the star's progress through the twentieth century are Henry Pleasants, Arnold Shaw, Stephen Holden, Gay Talese, Whitney Balliet, Gene Lees, Bill Boggs, Will Friedwald, and William Kennedy. Readers will also find intimate recollections by writers who knew not only the musician but the man himself, such as those by Pete Hamill, Jonathan Schwartz, and Rosalind Russell. The editors provide introductions to each section, a selected discography, a complete filmography, as well as a biographical chronology of the author's life and a selected bibliography. In The Frank Sinatra Reader, the man and his music become inseparable as the reader develops a greater understanding and appreciation of both. Mustazza and Petkov have created an invaluable collection that both illuminates and reflects Sinatra's incredible impact on the American cultural landscape. It is a must read for all Sinatra fans and for anyone interested in popular music and culture.

Frank Sinatra.......2006-04-16
Here's a collection of articles and book excerpts dealing with Frank Sinatra - the man, his music, his career. A vast majority of the pieces were written after 1965, and most are fairly long and substantial. It's amazing how similar in approach many of the personal reminiscences are: I knew Sinatra a long time, though we're not close friend; his personality is volatile - up one minute, demonic the next; he's performed magically at times and also in a mediocre fashion - are typical remarks. The ambiguity that those who know the man share is fascinating. Just about everyone acknowledges a magnetism about Sinatra - even bigger than his talent, said Billy Wilder - and many who have come to know him almost fear being sucked in by that magnetism - so they purposely keep the man at arm's length (at least in their writings about him). Just about every author who writes about keeping an appointment, for example, with Ol' Blue Eyes relates it with a marked tentativeness, some (notably Pete Hamill) as if they were going to their doom. I guess that was the power of Sinatra.
Guy Talese's "Sinatra Has a Cold" 1966 Esquire article (an early example of the New Journalism) is included, and it's a highlight of the book. Also of special interest are Pete Hamill's "The Legend Lives," Sinatra fanatic Jonathan Schwartz's "In the Wee Small Hours," and Petkov's own essay on Sinatra's greatest years when recording for Capitol records. But all the pieces are worthwhile and together build a well-rounded, critical (as opposed to mere adulation) view of perhaps the greatest male pop singer of all time. Worth checking out.
Great Inside View of the #1 Megastar of them all!!.......2001-12-23
From Bobby Sox fave to Sultan of Swoon to the Fall and Great Comeback, it is just about all here, except for the very last years from the mid-1990's to the end. This volume is a collection of essays surveying the vast realm of an incredible career. The clear links between his peerless Capitol recordings, and his own life are explained,as are the demanding sessions themselves, his always being in charge with a lot of help from his friends. Every piece here is worthwhile, my favorite being Gay Talese's FRANK SINATRA HAS A COLD (1966)To quote:"Sinatra with a cold is Picasso without paint,Ferrari without fuel..A Sinatra with a cold can, in a small way, send vibrations through the entertainment industry and beyond as surely as a President can, suddenly sick, shake the national economy." A great fun of a read! Not for Frank fanatics only.
A must for anyone who loves Ole Blue Eyes.......2000-09-19
This book is like an almanac of information on Frankie. I had the pleasure of reading it at a friends house, and it was just great. I highly recommend it. Another good one, is "Why Sinatra Matters." Both give a glimpse into a man that we all love.

This one's got it all.......2006-11-04
This is an extremely entertaining, well designed, and incredibly thorough compilation of the master's most important songs. The quality of the artwork, photos and reproduction of the sheet music is top notch and just when you presume that a particular song might not have made the list---there it is. Couldn't be happier with the item or the price. A total bargain.
This is it!.......2006-05-26
Oooh la la - what a find! This is a beautiful book - over 400 pages of great music. And it opens with 10 pages of color photos, album covers, and quotes. So many songs for young lovers. Lyrics/piano parts/and guitar chords for all the songs. And the binding is even great! It's a thick book, but will lie flat on your piano. Arrangements range in difficulty level, but are basic enough to add on to if you want.

gives the reader tremendous insight into the greatest singer/entertainer
of the twentieth century! The music section will provide the collector
with a checklist of 99% of Sinatra's commercially released studio

Book Description
Featuring 100 photographs of Frank Sinatra working with orchestras and arrangers, listening to playbacks, and, of course, singing, this book tells the whole story of how he created the Sinatra sound and translated the most intense personal emotions into richly worked-out songs of unrivalled expressiveness. One of the thrills of listening to Sinatra is wondering how he did it-and this book explains it all, bringing the dedicated fan and the casual music lover alike into the recording studio to witness the fascinating working methods he introduced and mastered in his quest for recorded perfection. Revealed is how, in addition to introducing and perfecting a unique vocal style, Sinatra was also his own in-studio producer-personally supervising every aspect of his recordings, from choosing the songs and arrangers to making minute adjustments in microphone placement.

Good rare photos and involving writing.......2007-07-12
This book comes from a different perspective and reminds the reader that really , it should be about the music .
I had read some silly books about Mr Sinatra and was glad to come across a serious one - I've always been fascinated by recording studios , having done some recordings myself . I wish I could have been at some of Sinatra's sessions .
This book is the next best thing for me .
I loved it .
Buy if you are even a small fan - this will make you into a bigger one .
Sinatra In The Studio.......2007-06-29
Read this one cover to cover. Incredible detail, both technical and artistic. The only thing that would have made this book better is a complete sessionography or a description of the recording process of each album rather than just select dates. That said, it is an incredible resource. This book, along with Will Friedwalds excellent "The Song Is You" are the definitive works on Sinatra's recording career.
A Wealth of Information on Sinatra Recordings .......2006-05-31
"I adore making records. I'd rather do that than almost anything else." ~ Frank Sinatra, 1961 ~
"Frank had the color and the fire and the brains and the imagination. Intellectual background strangely enough. Artistic sensitivity." ~ Nelson Riddle, 1983 ~
"Most Sinatraphiles would argue that his finest work, and the style he will ultimately be remembered for, was forged with Nelson Riddle. Sinatra-Riddle partnership was musically ideal and illustrates how a symbiotic musical relationship between orchestrator and singer can make a world of difference in what we hear and how we hear it." ~ Chuck Granata, 2004 ~
"Sessions with Sinatra and the Art of Recording" is indeed a wealth of information on everything you should know about Frank Sinatra's recordings. It is divided into five parts: The Big Band Years (1937-1942), The Columbia Years (1943-1952), The Capitol Years (1953-1962), The Reprise Years and Capitol Revisited. Mr. Granata did an excellent job in outlining Frank Sinatra recordings during his entire musical career, and his vast knowledge on all aspects of recording, technical in particular, is so amazing.
The Foreword was written by Phil Ramone, who himself is very well-versed when it comes to recording session engineering, and once said that he "was in heaven on the day that he realized his dream of engineering a Sinatra session."
Nancy Sinatra, who herself is a star in her own right, has written a very loving tribute to her famous Dad and "her hero" on the Afterword. I would single out a quote from her that I found so moving, here goes. . .
"My father always had a genius for picking the right songs, and when you consider the relationship between the tunes he selected, and the remarkably different themes that comes with each passing decade, you can see that his music tells a story that parallels his life and ours. Those songs, and their changing themes, represent Dad's most passionate dream - the one he talked about on dates with my mother - and the realization of that dream, which brought him almost insurmountable pain along with irrepressible joy as he experienced it, and as he lived it."
This wonderful and well-written book also features over a hundred black and white photos of the star himself with his fellow artists, musicians, conductors and arrangers such as Nelson Riddle, Quincy Jones, Billy May, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Mitch Miller, Rosemary Clooney, Bing Crosby, his daughter Nancy, among others; Nelson Riddle's original score for "Close To You" in 1956; a vocal lead sheet of "April In Paris," (from Come Fly With Me sessions in 1957), which Mr. Granata cited as an example of how great Frank Sinatra was in legato-style phrasing, breath control and vocal maturity.
Mr. Granata wrote about the collaboration between Sinatra and Riddle (Part 3, Pg 92) and called it "A Musical Marriage." Frank Sinatra believed that Nelson Riddle was "the greatest arranger in the world, a very clever musician who was like a tranquilizer - calm, slightly aloof. And he's got a sort of a stenographer's brain." If Sinatra tells him, "Make the eighth bar sound like Brahms," or "make it like Puccini" - Riddle will make little notes, and will obey the Chairman. Their partnership was so fruitful and creative as well, and had produced the finest recordings of all-time, there's no doubt about it. They were truly musically made for each other. They both had good work ethic and the same musical goal. They knew what "each other was doing with a song and what they wanted the song to say." They had a very good rapport in all their collaborations, which is the most important factor to the success of a recording.
This is a very detailed source of information to any new Sinatra fan looking to start a collection of albums for the appendices show lists of Companion Recordings, Basic Collection, Concept Albums under Columbia, Capitol, Reprise, QWest Records. It also enumerates "Fifty Songs That Define the Essence of Sinatra" and most of them are meaningful, special songs that are my all-time favorites.
Congratulations, Mr. Granata for an excellent and well-crafted book you've written. And thank you very kindly for inscribing my copy. ;)
Very highly recommended to any Sinatra buff.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book, But There Are Just A Few Flaws!.......2005-05-18
Big Band writer George T. Simon wrote this book very well. His use of vocabulary words is flawless; the description of some of the bands is beyond effect. Some of the pictures are fun to look at while some of the others aren't. There were plenty of interviews that Simon made the effort to make and the people that he interviewed spoke very highly of their leaders, other leaders and themselves. Among some of the people that he interviewed included bandleader Teddy Powell, bandleader/arranger Jerry Gray and band singer Bob Eberly, truly ONE of the better singers of his day. The length of the book is very nice to. I feel that Simon covered all he wanted to cover.
Now for the complaints. I would have given it five (5) stars, but I only have it four (4) because I found several mistakes in the book. I have enclosed an excerpt from the book to prove the mistake I found:
"On August 1, 1949, the (Glenn Miller) band recorded
its biggest hit of all time, `In The Mood,' complete
with the tenor sax(ophone) exchanges between (Tex)
Beneke and (Al) Klink..."
I only noted this because Glenn Miller recorded "In The Mood" in 1938/39, not 1949. But if I were the author, I would have proof read it more. But hay, everybody makes mistakes.
It's a shame this one's out of print.......2004-03-21
Simon's wonderful book on the Big Band Era succeeds on a number of levels. First, George T. manages to introduce you to virtually any big band leader that was anybody during the period spanning 1935 to 1946. Second, since the Big Band Era is long gone, it is important to understand this fantastic music in context. The best introduction to that context is this book. Third, as a personal friend to perhaps the greatest popular big band leader, Glenn Miller, Simon gives you some insights into this period which started an explosion in popular music. This is not a book for jazz apologists who rail at any commercial success by jazz musicians. It is also not the book for people that don't understand that Jazz was first and foremost a popular music at it's inception. Simon unapologetically conveys the story of the union of the Big Band, Jazz and Popular music. That union really only occurred for about 11 years. By the late 40's the Big Band as a mainstream popular music vehicle was passing out of focus and into history.
This book is a great introductory overview of the Big Band Era. People wanting to learn more are encouraged to read "The World of Swing" by Stanley Dance, "The Swing Era" by Gunther Schuller, "Big Band Jazz" by Albert McCarthy and "The Dance Band Era" by Albert McCarthy. Unfortunately all of these books except for one are now out of print, but well worth finding. Start with Simon if you really want to understand what the Big Bands meant to popular culture during the latter part of the Great Depression and World War Two. Plus, Simon is a highly skilled writer (a former magazine editor), so this is an easy read.
Cool but too self-congratulatory.......2001-08-10
This is, as they say, the definitive work on classic big band and swing music, full of profiles of bands and band leaders large and small, from the Artie Shaws and Glenn Millers to the Will Bradleys and Hal Kemps. The scope of the book is very well-rounded, including information on often-neglected "sweet" band musicians such as Isham Jones, along with pre-big band acts like Ted Lewis. The downside is that Simon -- a jazz music critic for "Metronome" magazine during the big band years -- wears his insider credentials on his sleeves, and is a bit of an insufferable name-dropper. Nonetheless, this is a great reference work, and a nice look back at the glory days of swing.
Comprehensive and enlightening view of this music.......1999-03-08
This book occupied a prime spot on my fathers bookshelf while I was growing up. I frequently heard this music as a kid, and was intrigued by its swing and feel. I had the pleasure of befriending George Simon, and found him to be a first class gentleman. I visited him at his home, and we would discuss the music and his experiences. It gave me tremendous insight into the times, and was always interesting. George was about fifty yeasr older than I ( I have lost touch with him after his move to Florida) but due to his involvement with the Grammys he could go from Harry James to Bob Dylan to Jimi Hendrix with ease. An interesting and insightful book by someone who loved the music and all it stood for.
The names, the faces, the places: they're all here!.......1996-10-26
George Simon was an intimate part of the big band scene. He
was there when it was born and he was there when it
atrophied during Word War Two. He was an original member of
the Glenn Miller Orchestra (he played drums) and one of the
first writers for Metronome Magazine, the trade mag for the
music industry in that time. I have a hardcover copy of the
9th printing. The original copyright is indicated as 1967.
I also have an accompanying three record set that is unique
in that it was a cooperative effort by three competing
companies: RCA, Decca and Columbia. It's a shame that this
isn't available too!
Over 400 bands are mentioned, some extensively. It is full
of first-hand accounts, anecdotes and many photos. I felt as
if I was there! George Simon gave us a true window into this
piece of music history.
If I had an extra thumb, I would give it three thumbs up!

Good selection, weak arrangements.......2000-05-08
Warning: In general, these are not the arrangements you hear on Sinatra records, at least the ones from the Capitol era. Usually they are not even close - different keys, less instrumentation, etc. For that reason, I found it to be an almost worthless compilation. Why not provide the arrangements people know and love?

Book Description
Sinatra's conductor reveals what it's like to work for legendary singers Frankly - Just Between Us, is an entertaining and insightful behind-the-scenes look at the world of playing piano and conducting for Frank Sinatra and other contemporary music legends. This book chronicles the illustrious career of Vincent Falcone from his days at Syracuse University and tuning pianos and performing casual dates in Las Vegas, to playing piano and conducting for music icon Sinatra during the apex of his career. Falcone also played for such music greats as Andy Williams, Jack Jones, Sammy Davis Jr., Jerry Lewis, the McGuire Sisters, Tony Bennett, Connie Francis, Paul Anka, Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme, and many others. Frankly contains many great stories about playing and conducting for some larger-than-life music personalities of the '70s, '80s and today, and the highs and lows of playing for this caliber of entertainment.

Great New Sinatra book.......2007-09-12
This book is a great read for Sinatra fans. Lots of little tidbits you probably have never read before and I speak as a reader and owner of just about every book ever written on him. Highly recommended.
Just between us - an interesting read if your a Sinatra fan.......2006-08-30
It is a pleasure to read a book about Frank Sinatra by an intimate who is not seeking to make money on the strength of the name. These are the memories of an obviously talented musician who happened to be propelled from the lounges of the Las Vegas casinos to travelling and working with and for the finest popular singer of the 20th century. No great revelations here but then no muckraking either. Mt Falcone went on to work with most of the other remaining artists in this field of music and his story was worth telling and worth reading.
Music and Mr. Falcone.......2006-07-06
This book by Vincent Falcone is not just about his association with Frank Sinatra. It's about a guy who's passion for music and the mastery of his craft bring him to the top of the heap, that is, becoming the musical conductor for "The Chairman of the Board". I enjoyed this book because it's the story of a humble man who followed his dream but always kept his feet firmly planted on the ground. I came away admiring Mr. Falcone's determination. His stories about Mr. S were insightful, entertaining and poignant. I particularly enjoyed his stories about the bandmembers. This book was an easy read-direct and full of inside information, such as Mr. S's backstage requirements.
Mr. S. would approve!.......2006-01-31
I loved this book!! This is a great book about Frank Sinatra written by someone who worked with him and really knew him. Lots of great stories about Mr. S. and other entertainers. I found myself also enjoying reading about Vincent's life. I found his success story and positive attitude really inspiring. This book was so enjoyable to read that I started slowing down because I didn't want it to end. If you want to read a great book from someone who was really there -- then get this book right away!! Thanks, Vincent!
WHAT A RIDE AND WHAT A READ!.......2006-01-22
This book is an absolute must for all fans of Frank Sinatra. It is full of fascinating behind the scenes glimpses of the legendary entertainer, many of which will likely surprise you. The story is told in a voice and style that made me feel I was right there along for the wild rollercoaster ride that brought a young unknown from Syracuse N.Y. to the pinnacle of his profession: touring the world with The Chairman of the Board. There are also some very funny anecdotes involving comedians. Plus, the author offers a number of vauable insights into what it takes to carve out a successful career in music, regardless of the era. One of the most enjoyable reads I've ever had. I'm giving the book as gifts.

Excellent Transcription of 40 Sinatra Songs.......2007-05-12
The book contains 40 songs as sung on recordings by Sinatra. The piano part is a transcription of the orchestra, which can make a non-jazz player sound pretty good, if they read music well.

Book Description
Focusing on Sinatra's presence in the recording studio, this discography catalogues Frank Sinatra's commercial records, V-Discs, and soundtrack film recordings. The first chapter covers Sinatra's early years as a vocalist with the big bands of Harry James and Tommy Dorsey. Entries then proceed chronologically with separate chapters for each decade. Data was collected from session reports in the files of record companies and from some union contracts. Commercial record and film soundtrack entries include band personnel and composer credits. Frank Sinatra fans, music historians, and discographers will appreciate this comprehensive catalogue of session recordings in which Sinatra either sang or conducted. The sessions span Sinatra's entire career, from his early days through the nineties. Two indexes, of song titles and of artists, complete the book.
