Great for basics.......2005-12-06
There are a ton of great chords in here. I love the fact that there is a photo of each one. It is hard for me to overlook the fact that the title calls this an encyclopedia, because it is missing many different chord extensions and variations.

Customer Reviews:
Great!.......2007-09-25
This book is fantastically cool.
It shows nearly every chord in 3 forms: Movable, Open, and in the Intervallic form. Every single chord is noted on staff AND shown in a diagram. Great for reference and also great for getting readers into music notation-reading; it gives an easy way to translate guitar chords into staff chords, much like "A Notated Intervallic Study of Scales" does for Scales and Modes. Great book!

Book Description
Johnny Rector has been recognized for years as one of America's top jazz guitar writers. Here, for the first time, he presents an analysis of modern chord progressions, extensions, alternations, substitutions and a "hands-on" series of exercises designed to utilize and apply these important concepts to the guitar fingerboard. This book was written as a self-study guide to the intermediate, advanced and professional guitarist who has not had the opportunity to study material of this kind with a first-class competent teacher-artist, although such a teacher can be of great assistance in learning to apply the material. It shows unusual chord forms and progressions beyond the basics. Written in standard notation.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful resource.......2006-08-18
I own & originally studied from an older version of this book in two volumes published in the 50's by Play-Rite Publications. I have been a guitar teacher for many years & always wished the books would be made available again so I could use them in instruction for current students. This is a revised version of those two books in a single volume, updated with some newer info & a cd. All guitarists will benefit greatly from this study & will enjoy playing the progressions. The knowledge contained in this book will stay with you & open up many new ideas for chord substitutions making your playing exciting & interesting. Johnny Rector presents the material in an interesting & logical order. "Mel Bay's Deluxe Encyclopedia of Guitar Chord Progressions" by Johnny Rector, along with "Mel Bay's Rhythm Guitar Chord System" are two books every jazz &/or rock guitarist should own. 5 stars!

If you are only going to get one guitar chord book, make it this one! Thousands of chord forms are presented. Chords are presented in each key and numerous forms are shown for each type of chord. Chords are classified into melody forms, inside forms, rhythm forms and bottom four string forms. Each type of chord is shown in notation, listing the name of each note and its function in the chord (root, third, seventh, etc.) Also, the name of each note is shown on every diagram and the bottom and top chordal tones are listed (5th, root, etc). A great value for any guitarist.
Customer Reviews:
Useful Book.......2006-12-28
I like this book simply because of its contents and layout. It shows many ways to hold each chord. It teaches the guitarist sometimes three, four, five and six string methods, so whatever type of guitar or muscic you play, there is a method that can best suit your needs. I recommend the spiral version because you can spread the book apart more easily.
A new guitar players savior..........2001-04-14
An educational book that's been in print since 1971 has gotta be good. This book basically taught me how to play guitar. I learned all of my chords and such from it. It's laid out very clearly with both diagrams and photos to show you how to make each chord. Definitely get this one.

Customer Reviews:
Good solid chord book.......2007-09-01
This book is a good reference for all the basic voicings of every chord. If you want jazz chords (or any other genre of music) this book won't give it. If you don't have a chord reference book, or are unhappy with the one you have, this is the book you want.
The only drawback I found was I thought I was buying the spiral bound edition (for ease of use). This was not the case. I was under this false impression because there is a review on this book that remarked on the ease of use because of the spiral binding. So, if binding matters to you, you may want to confirm the binding before purchasing.
Caveat Emptor -- The spiral bound though smaller in size, has fewer pages (I would expect more pages to compensate for the size). It might not contain all the chords the regular edition does. Be sure to check this out if it matters to you.
Comprehensive and Portable.......2007-03-11
This is the best guitar chord encyclopedia I know of. It is comprehensive and portable, the spiral binding allows for easy hands free reference, and the price is right. Multiple voicings for chords are provided in chord diagram formmat. The introduction to chord theory is an added bonus as is the fingerboard chart on the back cover. Fits perfectly into a guitar case.
know what you're buying.......2007-02-07
This book has tons of chords with tons of variations for each. However, you should know what you're getting before you buy it. This is NOT a chord progession book. It will not tell you how to use the chords. If you already know what chords you want to play, this book will help you find possible variations.
Guitar Chord Encyclopedia.......2007-01-11
Very impressed! I've been using this book for 2 months now and have not yet run across a chord that is not in the book. Each cord also has every possible fingering variety. Discovered chords I never new exists. A must for musicians that are learning songs off the sheet music.
The only chord book you`ll ever need !.......2000-01-28
I have bought so many chord books out there and this is the only one that i have ever needed and that`s a fact. I do alot of chord melody so i`m allways looking for that chord that has the right note in the top of the chord. No looking anymore..With Guitar Chord Encyclopedia you have every chord you`ll ever need. I`m talking about 36 chords in EVERY KEY! And Chord progressions and every thing about Chord Theory, intervals, chord structure, bulding chords, cicle of fifths and even explains Tablature. If there`s one thing i got to say about this book is ...Thanks Steve Hall for every chord i`ll need!

Ideal book for learning chords.......2007-06-04
This book is just what I was looking for. A no fuss book with quality pictures showing recommended finger positions for common chords and their billions of variants! Well organised with a section for each chord note.
I can't fault it.
Forget the Grimoires.... HERE'S the Real Deal!.......2006-11-07
This book is just about perfect! After buying grimoires, chord charts and all other manner of paraphernalia, I finally found EXACTLY what I was looking for in this book. For the basic modern guitarist, this is all you need. What more can I say?
Oh, OK, fine, here are the details:
There is a six-page introduction to the book which describes how to use the book (um, you have to be an idiot not to understand how to use the book, but just in case!); it also discusses briefly how to choose the best voicings, how to "read" chords, what all the voodoo symbology in chords actually MEANS (like you'll find out that "C+" is not just a computer language!), how to assemble each chord type (ie. "minor" means "first-flatted third-fifth"), and what an "inversion" means. This introduction is very clear, well thought-out, and only provides essential and useful information. BUT, this is not the meat of the book.
The main part of the book consists of 264 pages of chords! Each very large page is divided vertically in half so that only two chords appear on each page. Each chord is given by its symbol at the top of the page in large type, below which is the English translation. Below that is the chord written out on a G-clef in standard music notation, with each note labeled and the root note labeled. Below this are five separate voicings for that chord. Each voicing is given in two separate ways: there is a large black and white photograph of a hand playing that chord; to the right of that is a six by six grid which sort of looks like you're looking down on the fretboard of a guitar. On this grid are black dots representing which frets and which strings you press down, along with the suggested fingering for that chord. Each note is labeled. The five voicings progress down the neck, allowing you to play that chord essentially anywhere you need to on the neck. These diagrams and pictures are BIG so you won't have to do a lot of squinting. Perfect size type, and all the information you will need.
There are 44 separate chords given, for each of the 12 keys, with five chords voicings given for each chord. (For those of you counting at home, that is 2640 separate chords!) These 44 chords range from the basic major and minor chords that every beginner learns, to the esoteric stuff that you'll probably never need unless you play jazz (like Cmaj7#11 and C13sus4.)
The book is well thought-out, planned, and executed, the perfect size and shape, and with a wealth of information--- but not TOO much information--which is a problem I was having with some of the grimoires. (Now, don't get me wrong. The grimoires are ALSO essential once you've reached a certain level. However, for the day-to-day guitar player, they are too complicated overkill.)
In summary, until you start playing stuff like Wes Montgomery, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Frank Zappa or Robert Fripp, this book is all you will ever need!!!
The Best Ever.......2006-07-12
the pictures and notes are excellent just what I have been looking for,for years thumbs up I recommend it to everyone you can not loose all to gain knowledge you will use for life!

Pictures Are Worth A Thousand Words.......2005-12-06
My first chord encyclopedia was Mel Bay's "Deluxe Encyclopedia of Guitar Chords," published in 1971. I remember using that book and thinking, "I wish it had pictures for all these chords." The day I saw the picture chord book I bought it! To give credit where credit is due: these two books were the inspiration for my chord book, "GUITAR: Probable Chords."
From Mark John Sternal
Author of "GUITAR: Total Scales Techniques and Applications"
"GUITAR: Probable Chords"
"Complete Guitar By Ear"
and, "The Twelve Notes Of Music"
Almost Every Chord Imaginable!.......2000-06-06
This book was great! The first few pages are dedicated to reading the chord diagrams and some chord construction. Every chord in this book has a picture with it so you can see how it looks and if you are holding it right. The chord diagrams have numbers so you can place your fingers properly also. I found this book very useful at times when I play songs that have chords like G#11 or Cm13 and such. My guitar teacher recommended this book to me in the very beggining and it is the best chord book out there!

A must Have in Chord Book's.......2007-03-26
I purchased this book when it first came out and was very impressed !
Through the years i used the heck out of it, It was showing some wear so i found a new copy here and thought i'd better get me another copy so i would have it, also after i ordered it i also ordered another copy for a friend as he seen mine and had to have one. Don't think I could ever stop using it, Its a great book, if someonelse was to get a copy, i don't think you would be diapointed !!!

An accompanist's bible.......2003-08-17
This reference is a must for anyone who is serious about learning new guitar chords. It is especially useful in trying to find a chord to fit in passing chord runs. Just look at the chords for the driving bass note, and keep playing those illustrated until you find one that fits the song. As an example, a C#dim may be best when going from A to D with a C# lead in an A tune, but a C#min7th flat 5 might be best when going from A7 to D in a D tune. Using this book can be invaluable in these situations.
A Great Essential...Item for a Guitarist.......2000-03-31
Sitting down going through a piece of sheet music and trying to find multiple forms of a particular chord. This book has been a very great item to find that chord form that would work perfect in a song, and has a very easy layout..

A huge disappointment!.......2007-09-09
This book does have a ton of chord progressions....but all of the same sequence! 95% of the book is the same patterns, i.e. I-IV-V Blues, I-vi-ii-V (the 50's) twice, and the Blues again in the 7th chords.
Some of the Jazz Swing stuff was cool, but overall if you know how to read a Circle of 5th's wheel you can do a lot better than this book. Unless you are a total beginner, I can not recommend this book, it is too simple.
great book...poorly edited.......2005-10-02
these chord progressions are presented in a very logical manner (from nut to bridge). the progressions get 'progressively' more difficult, so the book may be practiced from beginning to end. particularly useful is the section on 'moveable chords' where you play a fingering pattern for a certain type of chord (major, minor, etc.) and move it up or down for the pitch you want (g, d, e, whatever). the fact that it covers all 12 keys is important, because so many guitar songs are written in just a few easy keys. be aware that there are typos in the book. there are mistakes in the fingerings (they will be pretty obvious, since your hand just doesn't go that way) and also in the roman numerals of the progressions. that is the main reason why i gave it a 4 star rating and not 5. i already know theory, but i imagine the errors could be very confusing for a total beginner. while i feel like this is a useful reference, it does not stand alone as a method, and it is a little light on theory, but once you get started any music teacher can fill in the gaps. the only thing i felt was really missing is that they could have added some sort of a lead sheet page at the end so that you could review all the different chords/progressions without flipping through the book, but this is something you can type up yourself. song examples (or at least song titles) would have been nice too, but that may be outside the scope of what the author intended. bottom line - buy it and expand your vocabulary as a rhythm guitarist. if you really learn the progressions in this book you will have a voicing for each type of chord in each key - meaning it may not be 'pretty', but you can hack your way through just about any song out there.
