5 out of 5 stars Fabulous resource!.......2003-09-25

This book is an outstanding resource for all teachers of reading. It addresses a wide range of aspects of reading instruction, including phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency, and comprehension, to name just a few. For each area, the book includes several key sections: WHAT is ...?; WHY is ... important?; and HOW do you teach ...?

The layout is simple to follow, and it is packed with excellent activities. It is truly amazing how much information is included in this one book. Most importantly, the content of the book is soundly based in current research that is presented in a very accessible way. The activities are well-designed and realistic, and all the necessary information is included to be able to implement the activity in your classroom. Every teacher should have a copy of this book!

5 out of 5 stars CORE Teaching Reading Resourcebook.......2000-10-02

CORE Teaching Reading Resourcebook is a superior book to use as a reference in the classroom. It supports all areas of reading in grades K-8. Also it has wonderful advice about ELL students. Not only does this book have information about teaching reading, but it has hands on teaching methods that are proven practices. Some of the larger areas of the book are word structure, sound/print connection, decoding, spelling, vocabulary development, comprehension, reading and responding, and differentiated instruction. CORE Teaching Reading Resourcebook greatly compliments Words Their Way, another must have book. One downfall about this book is the page numbering system, but as you work from the book it becomes less difficult.

My first book was given to me from the California Reading and Literature Project and I'm buying another copy for my son, who is also a teacher. I would recommend this book to any teacher interested in improving their knowledge of teaching reading. I often review my teaching strategies with this book before finalizing my lesson plans.

    Book Description

Check it out--the Chicks are back. Authors of It's a Chick Thing, with 110,000 copies in print--"A must book for the reader who knows that chicks rule" (Publishers Weekly), "a smart and sassy compilation" (Chicago Tribune)--Ame Mahler Beanland and Emily Miles Terry celebrate chicks nesting, or what it means to have a home filled with laughter, good friends, lovingly prepared foods and crafts, all with personal style.

Seasoned with attitude and packed with stories, history, how-tos, quips, advice, recipes, folklore, and crafts, Nesting is all about finding personal style and showing it off, putting an entirely fresh, it's-a-chick-thing spin on entertaining, decorating, cooking, and gardening. In "Chicks and Chow," the food chapter, there are unexpected stories by M.F.K. Fisher, Ruth Reichl, and Erma Bombeck; a Spice, Spice Baby! guide to spices; sixteen recipes for great Chicktails; and Towels That Snap Back (how to make personalized dish towels). "Flocking Together {hen parties and sassy soirees}" has Sally Quinn on being a guest while in labor; Ina Garton's "The Worst Party I Ever Had"; the How to Be a Hostess Cupcake guide to party girl preparedness; Upper, Lower, and No-Crust hors d'oeuvres; Monotony Killers; and decorating inspiration from Elsie de Wolfe: "I believe in plenty of optimism and white paint."

Nesting is totally un-Martha in its approach--it's easy, it's light, it's like your best friends hanging out and offering advice with a quip--and it's illustrated throughout with hilarious retro photos and illustrations.

2 out of 5 stars Cute but Pointless.......2005-08-29

About two-thirds of this campily illustrated and ultimately light-weight book consists of inspirational essays on the girliness of traditionally female tasks such as gardening, decorating, cooking, and entertaining. In this vein, the odd "helpful hint" tells us to sew tassels to our curtains, toast bread crumbs atop our packaged mac-and-cheese, and hold gardening parties in our least-loved bridesmaid dresses. Oh, and let's not forget painting the garden tools pink with polka-dots!

Some of the advice conflicts. On page 25, we're told that Elsie de Wolfe believed in "plenty of optimism and white paint!" Ten pages later, we're told we mustn't have white walls at all -- so boring! Who's right?

This book seems destined to be given as going-to-college and thanks-for-wearing-an-ugly-bridesmaid-dress gifts, due to its high cuteness quotient. As useful housekeeping advice, forget it.

5 out of 5 stars Love, Love, Love It!.......2005-01-07

This book is such a refreshing break from the Martha Stewart-style tomes on home decor and management. Granted, it's not an in-depth account of how-tos; it's not supposed to be! It's a tongue-in-cheek, girl-power, do-it-with-panache look at modern home care. If you're looking for the perfect new homeowner book for your newlywed friends, this is it. By the way...the recipes for Cowboy Cookies and the lasagna (so simple!) are worth the price alone. My husband starts panting when he sees I've got the recipe out..

5 out of 5 stars The MUST-HAVE Reference Book for Chicks.......2004-12-29

Love this book -- LOVE IT! I was the lucky recipient this Christmas and have read it already, cover to cover! Full of fun short stories, advice and quotes I'm sure to work into conversation some day. I plan on giving this book to my close chick-friends and am sure they will love it as much as I do!

4 out of 5 stars Chicks Decorate, Celebrate, Cook and Garden.......2004-09-04

"A home is like a man, you ought to live with it for at least a year before deciding on anything permanent. And even then it's a big gamble." Katherine Anne Porter. This sort of helpful hint peppers this book by people you might recognize. Oprah Winfrey and Anna Quindlan have either helpful hints or articles.

"Nesting: It's A Chick Thing" by Ame Beanland and Emily Terry is a cute book. I received it as a gift. It is easy to read, great illustrations, and all of the chapters are well written. However, the book is too simplistic for me. It will not change my housekeeping, cooking or gardening habits. This book is meant for young women just starting their life as newly weds, or out of college with a new home or apartment. The idea is terrific and should be marketed to the younger generation. It is a fun read, and will answer any question you can think of on decorating, cooking or gardening. Great hints on "Painting like a Pro"; "Starting from Scratch". with an empty room; "Starter Tool Kit"; " How To Set a Table"; "How To Host a Poker Party" ( that is one chapter that I really learned from); "Ultimate Comfort Food Menu"; "What You Need In The Kitchen"; How To Roast Anything"; Cottage Gardens"; "How To Use A Hoe"; "How Royalty Pulls Weeds"; and the best of all," Kindergarten- How to garden with children".

Ame Beanland is an editor and art director and would rather garden than eat, she says. Emily Terry is a public relations specialist and loves imperfect homes. They are a duo combo who has written "Chick Thing: Celebrating the Wild Side of Female Friendship". A book for your young daughters starting their newly independent lives. prisrob

    5 out of 5 stars A spurt of energy.......2004-08-22

Nesting is fun to do, fun to read, and fun to look at. Reading this gem will give any reluctant decorator or entertainer a spurt of energy to go for it. Whether you're throwing a girly party for a dozen or curling up with a cup of tea , this is an inspirational guide to refer to. A reference book for making one's house a home.

      Book Description

In Ego Psychology II, Gertrude and Rubin Blanck elaborate upon ego psychological theory, extending and broadening it into a psychoanalytic developmental psychology. They present the unifying proposal, derived from Freud's concept of an overall ego (the Gesamt Ich), that the ego is the organizing process itself. Out of this basic proposition, a holistic conception of psychological development evolves.

Within the developmental framework established in Ego Psychology II symptom constellation is shown to be unreliable as a guide to diagnosis. A diagram of development is presented to convey that overall development rather than symptomatology provides guidelines for secure diagnosis and suggests how treatment is to be carried out. Treatment, in the form of ego-building techniques, evolves from recognition that developmental inadequacies cause pathological formations that become malformations in the structure.

Ego Psychology II is valuable for psychotherapists, psychologists, psychoanalysts and social workers: the authors' extensive case-study material illustrates the theroy and technique of developmental psychology in vivid form. The authors show also how psychoanalytic developmental psychology updates drive theory, sheds new light on transference, redefines resistance and defense in the poorly structured personalities, clarifies the pathology of the borderline conditions of narcissism, and suggests reconsideration of the manner in which many neurotic formations are attained.

New York City in 1977 was in the middle of wild upheaval on all fronts, from the hunt for the Son of Sam killer and the citywide blackout to a brutal mayor's race and the rise of punk rock and the zenith of disco. In Ladies and Gentlemen, the Bronx Is Burning, journalist Jonathan Mahler revisits all those storylines through another drama, which grabbed tabloid headlines all summer long: the outrageous--and pennant-winning--New York Yankees. The Yankees weren't the greatest baseball team ever assembled--they weren't even the greatest of the era (the talent-laden Cincinnati Reds were superior player for player). But no modern team has earned more type than the "Bronx Zoo" Yanks of the late '70s, thanks in no small part to such characters as meddling owner George Steinbrenner, firebrand manager Billy Martin, and flashy slugger Reggie Jackson.

But what more is there to say about a ball club, even one as stormy and successful as the '77 Yanks? Mahler wisely strays out of the dugout and into the chaotic city to give his chronicle breadth and shape. Mahler deftly brings together a host of characters and developments--from doomed old-school catcher Thurman Munson to congressional hellraiser Bella Abzug, from media kingpin Rupert Murdoch to battling politicos Ed Koch and Mario Cuomo, from downtown punks to the glittery decadence of Studio 54. The result is a lively read that will entertain readers who wouldn't know an RBI from CBGB. --Steven Stolder

      Book Description

A kaleidoscopic portrait of New York City in 1977, Ladies and Gentlemen, The Bronx Is Burning is the story of two epic battles: the fight between Yankee slugger Reggie Jackson and team manager Billy Martin, and the battle between Mario Cuomo and Ed Koch for the citys mayorship. Buried beneath these parallel conflictsone for the soul of baseball, the other for the soul of a citywas the subtext of race. The brash and confident Jackson took every black myth and threw it back in white Americas face. Koch and Cuomo ran bitterly negative campaigns that played upon urbanites growing fears. Surrounding this braided narrative was a prowling murderer dubbed the Son of Sam, the acquisition of the New York Post by the unknown Rupert Murdoch, the opening of Studio 54, the infamous blackout, the evolution of punk rock, and the dawning of modern SoHo.

5 out of 5 stars A Kaleidoscopic Glimpse at NYC in the Summer of '77.......2007-10-01

I had heard a lot of good buzz about this book since it was published a few years ago. When I found out ESPN was making a mini-series out of it, I decided to take the plunge and buy it. I actually didn't end up watching the mini-series, but I loved the book.
One of the things that initially kept me away was the much-hyped baseball angle. Like any red-blooded American baseball fan that doesn't hale from the Tri-State area, I am life-long Yankee hater, and those George Steinbrenner/Billy Martin teams of the late `70s gave me plenty to hate. The last thing on earth I wanted to read was some hagiographic account of the Bronx Bombers winning the 1977 World Series.
I needn't have worried. The Evil Empire's tumultuous season is just one of several neatly interwoven story lines: New York's fiscal crisis, the city's nasty '77 mayoral election, Rupert Murdoch's purchase of the moribund New York Post. Several other subplots add spice: the blackout riots, Son of Sam, the burgeoning disco scene. New York was a busy place that summer.
There's nothing too profound here, just a snapshot of our greatest city at one of the lowest points in its history. Well paced and enjoyable, the book got me through several long airplane trips.

      2 out of 5 stars so-so.......2007-09-12

It didnt focus on the yankees as much as i thought it would, and when it did, most of it was about Reggie. All the events of that summer were interesting and I remembered a lot of it happening too which was cool.

5 out of 5 stars Great slice of history into 1977............2007-08-23

I was impressed with the amount of factual research Jonathan Mahler put into this wonder readaptation into the year 1977 in NY City. He takes a book and illustrates a wonderful slice of history into multiple aspects. There are several issues that keep the reader interested in the book. I particularly like books that have multiple plots and subplots. Mahler was able to keep each chapter full of intrique with a look into human experience and emotions of the key characters in this one year of magic. The final chapter he puts out: "The Bronx is burning, ladies and gentlemen, as we watch the 1977 World Series".......

1 out of 5 stars Ladies and Gentlemen, The Bronx is Burning.......2007-08-13

This is an excellent account of New York City and its troubles both on the baseball field and in the political arena. I highly recommend this for anyone who is interested in the NYY ball club and the politics of New York City, particularly in the late 1970's.

5 out of 5 stars The dingy decay and inner strength of 1970s New York in a good read.......2007-08-11

It's hard to believe the author of this book was a little kid when he first visited New York in the 1970s. I first moved to NYC as a young adult during this decade, and found this book reverberating with the discouraging urine-stained decay that was ubiquitous then -- graffitied subways, homeless bums, massage parlours, garbage strikes, crime, loan defaults...

And yet... beneath all this, there must have been some kind of resolve and determination... or perhaps simply infrastructure... that allowed Manhattan, at least, to ultimately avoid the suburban flight afflicting the rest of the nation's inner cities. New York is still New York, but those dark abandoned streets of 1970s Manhattan today sport boutiques and spanking-clean SUVs from one end nearly to the other (of course, the outer boroughs have not been so lucky). While this has also resulted in a loss of character and the sad conversion of Manhattan's old ethnic neighborhoods, it is also testimony to the endurance of urban culture, of some kind, in at least one American city.

Enough social commentary and onto the book! At first it seems that much of the plot may concern the dynamics of Reggie Jackson & Billy Martin and the Yankees; also figuring large are the 1977 blackout and the mayoral race. It would have been easy, and appealing, to showboat the charged conflict among Reggie, Martin, and Steinbrenner; but the author never succumbs to this temptation. Instead he seamlessly weaves the story of 1977 New York in the context of the cultural, political, and financial background of the times. Even Studio 54, punk rock, The Mercer Arts Centre, and Soho are given lip service.

What makes it all so good is the natural trajectory that makes for an entertaining read -- it is hard to put down, like a good mystery; it tells a story. This is great non-fiction: historic, accurate, nuanced, and atmospheric -- and as entertaining as any fictional narrative could be.

      Book Description

The life of the brilliant composer and conductor Gustav Mahler was punctuated by crisis. His parents both died in 1889, leaving him the reluctant head of a household of siblings. He himself endured a nearly fatal medical ordeal in 1901. A beloved daughter died in 1907 and that same year, under pressure, Mahler resigned from the directorship of the Vienna Opera. In each case Mahler more than mastered the trauma; he triumphed in the creation of new major musical works.
The final crisis of Mahler’s career occurred in 1910, when he learned that his wife, Alma, was having an affair with the architect Walter Gropius. The revelation precipitated a breakdown while Mahler was working on his Tenth Symphony. The anguished, suicidal notes Mahler scrawled across the manuscript of the unfinished symphony revealed his troubled state. A four-hour consultation with Sigmund Freud in Leiden, Holland, restored the composer’s equilibrium. Although Mahler left little record of what transpired in Leiden, Stuart Feder has reconstructed the encounter on the basis of surviving evidence. The cumulative stresses of the crises in Mahler’s life, in particular Alma’s betrayal, left him physically and emotionally vulnerable. He became ill and died soon after in 1911.
At once a sophisticated consideration of Mahler’s work and a psychologically acute portrait of the life events that shaped it, this book extends our thinking about one of the great masters of modern music.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, fascinating read ..........2006-11-20

This was a fascinating read from start to finish. Feder's psychoanalsis and assumptions aside, Mahler's life was already interesting and filled with excess drama. His relationship with his wife (another fascinating character) and all the name droppings around their small circle of friends/lovers/associates, etc., made this account one any Mahler fan will read cover to cover in a day or two. Just great stuff.

Once you dredge through the early chapters' technical and academic expostions, you will learn alot from the individual cases. I plan to revisit this work as I continually encounter children in my practice.

5 out of 5 stars The exelent book for checking of development of my children.......2000-02-24

I saw the videoversion of this book and translate it in to Russian language for my work. I'm impressed by language of discussing. It's very clever and needed book for every young and not very young mother. I'd like to have this book but I live in Russia and I have no idea how I can do it.

4 out of 5 stars A must have if you work with VoIP.......2005-10-27

Even if the book is not perfectly written, in the sense that there are some typos and some glitches in the explanations, it is still a wonderful source to learn Asterisk configuration.
The book alone won't do everything for you, you'll need to read all sample configuration files from Asterisk installation, check as many pages as you can from voip-info.org, and play with configurations as much as possible. So, the book is about one fourth and the friendliest portion of what you need to master Asterisk. Go for it.

3 out of 5 stars Disorganized, a lot of typos.......2005-10-08

This is a book where you can see niether the author or the publisher paid much attention to detail, there are a lot of errors.

It does help on understanding a little about Asterisk if you are an absolute beginner, but if you managed to install an Asterisk server based on the information already avaliable in the wikipedia at voip-info.org then you dont need this book.

The good thing: this is the first effort to document Asterisk for the public, there is no other good book to compare it at this moment, I hope the second edition corrects all the errors.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a cohesive overview of Asterisk.......2005-08-01

I've been working with Asterisk for six months and the documentation on the Internet is either scant or too technical. Thankfully this book fills in a lot of gaps and provides a better overall picture to me. I recommend this book and thank the author for helping me get my work done.

      2 out of 5 stars Disorganized, incomplete.......2005-07-05

Reading some of the positive reviews about this book, it's hard to believe it's the same one I bought.

I have 15+ years experience in the IT field. Whenever I install a new technology, I like to go find the best book I can on the subject and just start reading. Paul Mahler's book is the only one I could find on Asterisk so it's the one I chose, :-) Reading it straight through wasn't too bad: there's a lot of information in there. That's why it gets 2 stars.

Here's why it doesn't get more than 2.

It's very disorganized. Some sections appear to just be dropped in at the end of unrelated chapters. Advanced coverage of some topics occurs early in the book, then later he goes back and covers some of the basics. You're left bewildered early on, then later it's "Oh! Well why didn't he tell me that FIRST??"

The index, while it appears good at a glance, leaves much to be desired. Want to read about the Playback command? The index tells you to go to page 100, where you will find a one line example of the syntax. No explanation of the command, no description. Fortunately, more info is available elsewhere in the book but good luck finding it in the index.

I was reading one section and I knew I'd read it before. I googled for it and, sure enough, found it verbatim in the wikipedia. Large portions of this book appear to have been copied verbatim from the wiki at voip-info.org. Perhaps he wrote a lot of that site as well, I don't know, but it does explain some of the disorganization. It's like he found a good tidbit on the wiki, cut it and pasted it in at the end of whatever chapter was convenient.

And the typos. Not a biggie, but sometimes it can be confusing when there are glaring typos in technical data. And, in this book, there are a number of them.

All in all, I really wish there was an alternative out there. But there isn't and if you're like me and you've got to have the manual handy for the new technology you're supporting, maybe you should buy Mahler's book. Frankly, you can find information quicker through google and the wiki. But if you have the time and want to read it straight through it can be helpful.

4 out of 5 stars Very good reference for Asterisk.......2005-01-07

This book is a good attempt to hit the moving target that is Asterisk. I keep coming back to it and finding things to try and use. There is a lot of really good content and the Author does a good job of citing his sources too.
This book could do more for introducing the beginner to Asterisk - the concept of extensions in the dial plan is key to understanding Asterisk and it is a strange paradigm until you understand it. I wish this book had introduced it a little better.
Additionally, more dial plan and configuration file examples would have been a very helpful resource.
This book has been invaluable to me starting out with Asterisk. I would welcome updates and revisions as Asterisk expands.

      2 out of 5 stars Sorry, I didn't like it.......2006-04-22

To be honest, I didn't read it all from cover to cover. Of that which I read, I found it was a lot of psycho babble and I always found myself asking "How do you know that?" They did include references, but I found myself questioning the basic logic. Also, I didn't find this book helpful in being a better mother, which is the reason I bought it in the first place.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful, but so mom-focused.......2002-07-05

As many other reviewers have stated, this is a helpful book. But I just wanted to note that it is very mom-focused. The author acts as if the bond with the mother is the only bond, and the father just happens to be hanging around. Since it was written in 1978, this could have something to do with it, but I would argue that, while the bond with the mother is very important, parents can do quite a lot to assure that the baby is bonding and close to both parents. Just something to keep in mind. (This isn't meant to be a review of the whole book, just a side note.)

5 out of 5 stars An absolute must for conscious child rearing.......2000-01-27

This book allows you to get to a place that all parents wish they could be, inside their childs thoughts. I now have more understanding and MUCH more patience. It is easy now to be compassionate instead of upset since so many of my questions have been answered regarding infants moods, thoughts, feelings, and behavior. It has not only given me a new perspective on childhood behavior, it has helped me to understand my own!

5 out of 5 stars Very engaging, readable and informative.......2000-01-01

This book is wonderful. It explains and delineates the phases through which babies and toddlers go as they develop, using Margaret Mahler's theories, but making them accessible to the layperson. If you ever tried to read Mahler's "The Psychological Birth of the Infant", you know how scholarly and intellectually dense a work it is (I tried, but couldn't). Further, the loving and lyrical style makes it engaging and joyous to read. I wish that fathers (I am one, to a toddler girl) would read it, too.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books I have ever read on child development........1998-10-23

After working as a child therapist for more than five years, I found this book extremely thoughtful and helpful in working with children. It is beautifully written and is followed up by Dr. Kaplan's book on adolesence!
