My husband is love with this bass gautairist, and love this book and DVD combo.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute must for any aspiring bassist.......2007-08-01

First off, this book does an excellent job describing his life and sounds, from "he began playing a double bass" to "he would have the bass all the way up, and the treble half way." This book knows you want to sound like Jamerson, and it tells you just how to do that. What makes the book invaluable are the transcriptions. 49 of Jamerson's songs transcribed for you to play, right there and be able to get the idea of what he was thinking and trying to give when he wrote the basslines.

A book for any bassist.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!! It's ALL that!!.......2007-05-04

Thorough, well-researched biography of James Jamerson - the man who changed how musicians view the bass. What an amazing life and a tragic end for a musician of immense talent.

Warning - the section of tunes in the back of this book will make you want to burn your bass!! He was THAT good.

Can't really write more - gotta go practice.... That's how much this book will inspire you to go play. A MUST HAVE for your bass library.

5 out of 5 stars Play bass? Buy this!.......2007-03-20

Amazing learning tool filled with lots of great info and transcriptions.

5 out of 5 stars Great for bass players and motown fans.......2007-01-05

The book arrived in excellent condition and in a timely fashion.

5 out of 5 stars Complete Rhythm Guitar Guide for Blues Bands.......2007-08-09

I was almost put off by the (I think) dreadful cover (sometimes for an internet purchase, you DO have to judge a book by its cover!). The contents, however, are very impressive. This book is very comprehensive, and is not at all lightweight - it goes deep and provides very helpful theoretical support for those who are ready to absorb it. The fingering guides are spot-on. Overall it leaves little to chance. I'm very pleased with this book, and am very happy to recommend it. It offers plenty to the beginner, but also has lots for the advanced (even professional) player (it would be an extraordinarily good musician who couldn't something from this).

4 out of 5 stars Cerebral Blues.......2007-05-12

This is blues on paper. This is blues that a mathemetician would appreciate. The authors have taken the expression of emotion from impoverished descendents of slaves in the rural South and put it on paper. The groanings of Blind Willie Johnson have been converted to what seems like a mathematical formula.

Needless to say, this book is filled with music theory. It doesn't just tell you where to put your fingers on the fretboard. It doesn't just give you a chord and a track to practice it on. This provides the formulas for constructing the chords as well as the methodology for the construction. After studying this book the student will be able to construct his or her own chords almost anywhere on the fretboard and with almost any root.

This isn't just guitar playing to impress girls. This is a beginners book for the serious guitar student interested in acquiring the tools to ignite his own creativity and explore the world of music and music theory. It provides the basic foundation for music theory. All of the example tracks on the CD are very basic. The intent is to instruct the reader the basic formulas for constructing the chords thereby enabling the reader to construct his own chords.

For example: one section is devoted to turnarounds and endings. The half dozen or more example tracks show variations of the same riff. The intent is for the student to understand the construction of the riff thereby being able to creatively modify or embellish other turnarounds and endings.

This is almost like a texbook. It's not for beginners but serious music students.

5 out of 5 stars At last.......2004-10-19

A book that was exactly what I was looking for. Lotsa chords, lotsa theory, lotsa rhythms. Not just 30 pages of copy this and copy that for 20 somithing bucks, but 159 pages of a compendium of blues styles that is really helping me expand my knowledge of playing blues rhythm guitar. It is just about the right "level" for me to learn. Alot of the early stuff is easy but like most books it gets more challenging the father I get into the book, so I would rate this book for someone a little more than beginner to intermidiate or so. The CD that came with it did not correspond with numbers given in the book and it took me all of five minutes to listen to it and correct the track numbers. A small price to pay for finally getting a book I can sink my teeth into so to speak. If you don't want to learn theory you can skip over that part but I believe theory is helpful so I like it! If I was a teacher and a student said I want to learn blues rhythm guitar, this would be the book.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-04-10

I've had this book for about ten days now and am very happy with it. The biographical backgrounds on the players is enjoyable to read and it's interesting to see what gear these guys were using -- this information really rounds out this book in a way that makes it stand out from other books I've used.

The recording that comes with the book is also very good. The bass is very loud and the author does a good job of nailing each bassist's tone and feel. Also, the rhythms stand up, too, which is key. What's cool is that the bass is in one speaker and the drums are in the other so, if you want, you can turn the balance on your stereo and play with the drums alone, without the bass track getting in your way.

I think some people are turned off by this book because the entire bass line for each song isn't written out. Personally, I prefer it this way. I just want to get a taste for what these particular players were doing and don't feel like learning entire songs.

5 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" Book for Bassists Interested in R&B.......2007-01-22

First, my background: I am a performer (bass trombone and electric bass) and an instructor. I am also a composer and arranger. My undergraduate degree is in Music Education (Masters in Music Composition); and the majority of my Air Force career was spent in the field of Education and Training.

I "collect" bass guitar method books, always searching for that "perfect" book for the beginning, intermediate, or advanced bassist. "The R&B Bass Masters: The Way They Play" is written by Ed Friedland who, once again demonstrates that he is truly a master at authoring bass method books that are well-organized and easy to understand, yet extremely comprehensive and informative. (I dare say that, if Ed Friedland is the author, then the book is worth purchasing without any further research required!)

Aside from the obligatory introduction, author's biography, acknowledgments and CD track list, "R&B Masters" is divided into 10 chapters, each featuring a different R&B bass legend. Each chapter contains a brief biography of the featured bassist as well as sections on his gear and setup, style and technique, and a lesson with examples from his repertoire (included on the accompanying CD). The lesson examples are explained and analyzed; and written in both standard music notation and tablature. I firmly believe that every bassist (i.e., "musician") should develop as least a rudimentary ability to read music and not rely on tablature. However, this is the precise circumstance where tablature is an invaluable tool to gaining insight as to "how" the R&B master played a particular bass line. What makes this book so great is that the drum part is also included with the music notation and tablature.

In addition (and this is the "icing on the cake"), each chapter includes a selected discography (with recommended "cuts") and a detailed "checklist" which covers each bassist's equipment (type of bass, fingerboard, condition [stock or custom], setup, strings, pickups, and amp), as well as the bassist's tone, attack, signature traits, influences and overall approach.

As an example of how this all fits together, the chapter on Ronnie Baker (one of Philadelphia's top session bassists in the late '60s-mid '70s) states that he used an Ampeg B-15 amp (as a monitor in the studio; but a direct box fed his sound to the mixing board) and a stock, pre-CBS Fender Precision bass with stock Fender Precision split-coil pickups, a rosewood fingerboard, and heavy-gauge flatwound strings (that had "possibly" been marinated in butter!). It goes on to state that his tone was dark with a very dead sound (strings muted at the bridge with masking tape or paper towels) with a very punchy, yet rounded sound. He kept solid time, and his bass lines were unassuming with occasional bursts of flair. He was influenced by Duck Dunn and James Jamerson, and his overall approach to playing the bass was with melodic, laid-back grooves with a behind-the-beat feel. Further insight into Baker's style and technique is provided by comments from his session-soulmate, drummer Earl Young, who states that Baker made sure he knew what was going on by watching the drummer and his kick-drum pedal. "Baker would watch my feet, explained Young. "He sat on my left side and he'd copy whatever my foot was doing."

All in all, a "must have" book for anyone interested in a bassist's perspective of R&B: both its history and bass playing style.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-12-10

This book could have been useful. Unfortunately Mr. Friedland has spent more time with biographies of the various bassplayers and much less time on actual music. If I had wanted a biography I would have looked for that. Instead I wasted money on this.

4 out of 5 stars A Bass Player Library Essential........2006-06-18

The musical reviews and bios are nice, but music scores are only samples. I think I would have given this publication a 4 star or 5 stars if the bass lines were full, complete music scores (to experience the style indept). Anyway, nice to have your music library.

2 out of 5 stars Presentation method lacking.......2006-05-23

While this method seems to have some very useful information its fails miserably in one key area. Its fails to present the information in the context of songs. Its presents chords with drill style excercise you could play with a meteronme = boring will not keep my attention. If only the writer could go back and take a more of a "Blues You Can Use" style appoarch he would have a real winner here. So unless he rewrites this book with intresting songs to acompany the material presented, steer clear of this book and buy something better.

4 out of 5 stars Kick-Start Your Blues Career With This Book.......2002-09-11

After piddling around on the guitar my whole life, I decided to get serious with the Blues. This book kick-started me into the blues style. With a solid background in chord formations, I flew through the book, but Gelling covers everything that a novice needs to know. The CD is a fantastic learning tool. I am now going through his lead guitar methods books now. For the serious guitarist, I also recommend Fretboard Logic by Bill Edwards, a book that will solve the mystery of the fretboard and take you to the next level.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Source of Blues Technique and Knowledge.......2000-03-12

This book would be perfect for a beginning guitarist or an experienced one who wants to learn the blues. If the reader does not know, the book shows all the chords in helpful diagrams and tablature. The book also touches on keys and scales. The audio takes all the guessing out of learning new songs and the wondering if your playing it right. A beginner will get a lot out of this book. If you want to get a firm base of blues, then buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for starting to learn the blues.......1999-02-03

This book is clear and gives you the basics for learning to play Blues on guitar. It explains the theory in a way that is easy to grasp. The lessons are well thought out and really make you feel like you are getting somewhere. The accompanying CD sounds good too. Each exercise is played with a solo over the top so it is good to listen to. I bought the book because I was out of my depth in a blues workshop - I'm now hanging in there, and can to play along in any key.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Funky but not enough .......2007-09-16

I love Cornell Dupree's playing. He is one of my favorite rythym guitar players. I've been a professional musician for 35 years now and I've seen him many playing in all kinds of musical settings playing many different styles of music. No matter what he does he always remains himself. He's on some of my favorite disc's. Aretha Franklin, Donny Hathaway, Freddie King, Stuff, King Curtis, Paul Simon, and countless more funk, R&B and pop sessions. (Look up his catalog if you get the chance. It's amazing.
Though there is a lot here to learn from the lessons and it's all practical, useful real world stuff for me it didn't cover enough ground. As an intro it's good but he is such a sophisticated player it just left out too much.

The way he voices chords. The way he riffs between chords. These are all huge parts of his style and here it only scatches the surface.
Don't get me wrong. There are many beautiful things to learn here but I hoped for something that would dig deeper.
Go out and buy it despite my review. He is an original and whatever you get from this book will be worth your time.

2 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected.......2007-06-25

What I thought about this book...

CONS:

-- 19 pages of about his playing experiences and background. The book is relatively short at 72 pages.

-- I don't doubt you couldn't learn to incorporate funk into your playing if you read this book. I don't too much care for the approach used. He gives you songs he has written for you to play and hopefully you'll be "funkified" by the end of the song. He doesn't explain why he has chosen certain chord progressions or anything of that nature.

-- Not for beginning guitarists! A mixture of barre chords, slides, and pull-offs on one chord change is enough to intimidate a novice.

PROS:

-- Includes CD.
-- Well-written in tab and standard notation.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Stuff.......2006-10-16

Here 's a little gem of a book. While many books claim to teach
the subject Mr. Dupree delivers with an authenticity only garnered
after dedicating a lifetime towards crafting guitar for the very
best.

Definitely worth the money and a worthy investment in my time.
I found this book to be the perfect tool for learning a very
magical style of guitar playing.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars are not enough!.......2005-08-10

As someone who has bought more guitar books than I'd care to admit (given my still limited ability!), I can recognise exceptional quality in an instructional book when I see (and hear) it. Chris Hunt has produced the best rhythm guitar book I have ever encountered. It has 55 examples which are usually 2-4 bars long (a few are longer) and 8 play-along tracks with just bass & drums for extended practice. Without a doubt, every lesson is a minor gem. The rhythms and chord voicings presented here are things you have heard on hundreds of classic R&B tracks, but I think any guitarist of any style can benefit from the wisdom that is distilled in these pages. The quality of production, execution and knowledge that Chris has shared is as good as it gets. It will save me a lot of money that I would have given to a teacher to learn all that is contained here. It deserves to become THE benchmark rhythm guitar text and a best seller that every guitarist should own.

Both this book on Rhythms and the complimentary book on solos is the way for any budding blues musician to get started. Geared toward the beginner, this book teaches rhythms within a single string format, so understanding complex chord structures is not a requirement. It is required that you work outside the single string concept and eventually apply the same techniquest to chordal structures, but you can handle this at your own pace, while still learnign a lot about the Blues beat.

This is an excellent instructional tool. The "book" part is a simple pamplet meant to suplement the DVD. The DVD is clear, concise, and step-by-step. The techniques are presented individually and in a very straightforward and complete manner. Corey Christiansen KNOWS his stuff and only presents the relevant material. My skills increased dramatically after going tyhrough the examples a few times. You can get more from this book than from months of lessons. Seriously. I want more topics like this!
