4 out of 5 stars The Truth Hurts, The 'elites' are not elite!.......2007-08-20

Political commentator and radio talk-show host Laura Ingraham decries self-styled "elite" groups who believe themselves superior to those with traditional American values. She singles out mainstream media, academic intellectuals, and showbiz celebrities as well as the United Nations and antireligious and pro-immigration supporters. This is an interesting book and an easy read.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!!!.......2007-08-13

This book is a waste of time. It has no real substance. She constantly contradicts herself, and drones on and on about nothing.

2 out of 5 stars Feels like a high school term paper.......2007-08-10

I knew nothing of Laura Ingraham before picking up this book. Never heard her radio show, never read anything (that I'm aware of, at least.) Though I agree with much of what she says, she says it in a boring, repetitive, know-it-all, condescendingly-laughing-at-the-condescending, smarmy and whiny manner. The personal asides, where she describes those she disagrees with as failed actors or once-funny comedians may work on radio, but in print just come off as mean spirited and irrelevant. We care about the views, not the source.

Besides being smug and pompous, she is a mediocre writer. (And the typos--come on, guys....) Her prose reads like someone who talks extemporaneously for a living. And I don't think I learned anything new at all. The same ideas are expressed far more eloquently by many others. Mona Charen, Daniel Flynn, Peter Wood. Go to those authors to read excellent prose and thoughtful reasoning. This is stream of consciousness blather, a product that feels rushed to market. Books written in a hurry die equally fast. Save your time. Go elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars This is entertaining as all get out................2007-07-15

Once again, the reviewers are almost as good as the actual book. The Left are convinced that the author is the devil incarnate, while the Right can't quite think of her, as one of their own. Why the left even bothers to read this, knowing her slant of things, is almost beyond comprehension. She's kind of like Coulter---they just can't get enough of this stuff. As far as the right--the mind reels. For those of us not on the extreme, one way or the other, well, let me put it this way. Unless all of you checked this book out at your local library, or stole it---she got your money, didn't she???

3 out of 5 stars A culling of news stories misses the mark, which is regrettable.......2007-04-24

Laura Ingraham had a good idea: show how self-anointed elites are destroying the Constitution-based American way of life. The problem is not with her writing style, which is commendibly clear. Rather, she has collected hundreds of snippets from the news and spun them out, one after another, with often too little analysis and, worse, virtually no footnotes.

For example, Ingraham describes former Secretary of State Madeline Albright's supremely clueless performance in North Korea without a single reference to third-party sources. Yes, her accounting is accurate, but you'd only know that if you follow the news closely. The people who need to be persuaded do not, so it is important to provide sources for the few who may want to pursue the subject.

Ingraham's point is not news to many of us: the people who constitute the various elites of show business, academia, the UN and other areas are strictly of the "do as I say, not as I do" variety. Al Gore wants you to ride a bicycle, while he uses a private jet to go from point to point. College professors want their young, often gullible, students to ignore - in fact, never learn about - the more than 100 million murdered by Communists while they preach their Marxist dogma. The same academics are also in the forefront of stifling independent thinking and freedom of speech on campus. The UN, of course, is painted as the corrupt organization it is, a world body dedicated to the enrichment of its bureaucrats while it ignores human rights abuses throughout the world.

Ingraham makes her points, but not as tellingly as they could be made. A good overview of how the self-appointed doyens are trying to rip down the United Stats and destroy the Consitution, but not as effective as it could be.

4 out of 5 stars Just wish it had the whole songs.......2005-08-08

This is a great product; you'd think it was an obvious thing and that others would have done it but here it is: Susan's comments and advice, and then the songs/exercises, are a clear and healthy drill for singers of most levels. Whether you are out of practice or just looking for something fresh, you will probably enjoy these exercises. Do take advantage of the song lists in the various amazon reviews and pick which version is best for you.

I can feel the tension relief in my throat already, just from one day's practice.

5 out of 5 stars it's fun, it's clear, and it works!.......1999-11-19

I loved singing with this workout! The song selection is wonderful and the instructions are easy to follow. It's great to sing with a whole band, instead of just a piano playing scales. Susan gives just enough guidance on the CD so I didn't get bogged down. Her book is very clear. I've read voice instruction books that told me way more than I needed to know. The info here is straightforward and made a lot of sense. She has expansion info on how to stylize that's beyond me right now, but it's nice that there's room to grow built into the songs. So much better than singing with a kareoke CD!

Perhaps it was a white jazz musician's need to negate his very ordinary American boyhood, or maybe it was in the genes he inherited from his alcoholic father--no one can be quite sure--but Bill Evans, one of the most influential American jazz pianists ever, was a drug addict. He picked up his habit shortly after joining the Miles Davis Sextet in the 1950s, but it took Evans more than 20 years to be swallowed by the abyss of heroin, methadone, and cocaine. Sitting at the piano in the shadow of Davis, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones--the era's paragons of cool--could not have been easy for the retiring musician who suffered harsh ribbing at the hands of both bandmates and fans. Ironically, as the drugs distorted Evans's body and soul, his fingers coaxed ever more sublime music from his keyboard. Biographer Peter Pettinger was himself a professional pianist and a longtime listener of Evans, so he is expert at articulating the nuances of the music. He is perceptive too in exploring the forces that imbued in one life so much beauty and so much pain. The result is a book that is both a memorial to a burdened man and an homage to his transcendent music.

Book Description

This enthralling book is the first biography in English of Bill Evans, one of the most influential of all jazz pianists. Peter Pettinger, himself a concert pianist, describes Evans's life (the personal tragedies and commercial successes), his music making (technique, compositional methods, and approach to ensemble playing), and his legacy. The book also includes a full discography and dozens of photographs.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Mainly for fans, but solid.......2007-09-26

As other reviewers have noted, this is a rather dry tome in some ways, but if you appreciate Evans' musical genius at all, then it's a worthwhile read.
Not a lot of gossip here, although Bill's junk and blow issues are honestly but never obsessively dealt with. I love the scene where Bill gets a ten grand advance in the early 60s and has his pal drive him around to all the friends who loaned him money for smack rather than see him get in deep with the mob. Bill paid every debt he had; not a typical junkie to be sure, and one more reason to respect the man's heart. It's also nice to trace Bill quitting his habit.
The first trio is discussed in much depth; LaFaro's death was clearly a massive blow from which the pianist never fully recovered.
Above all this is a real tribute to Evans' music, with plenty of tales of the making of each album. It helps if you know a little musical theory; there's a fair bit of discussion of Bill's unique harmonic concept, and his innovative use of inner voice movement. If you don't know A from Bb, however, it won't matter; there's a ton of interesting stories here anyhow.
This is by and for serious Evans fans, but if you're a real devotee of his splendid piano mastery, this is a true gem; it made me love the man and his music even more.

5 out of 5 stars Very informative and easy to read.......2007-08-29

For Jazz Piano fans this is a must have book, written by a concert pianist Peter Pettinger. This is a lot more than the cobbled together batch of newspaper stories you get with biographies of some pop stars. There is a brief look at his early years, but mostly the book concentrates on the music and a few of the major events in Bill Evans sadly short life.

A lot of time and research has gone into this fascinating book. Did you know for example that Conversations with Myself was recorded on the same Steinway Piano as Glenn Gould used from 1960 onwards? If you are a musician and hoping for transcriptions there is only one, and it is only a small section. There is also the head to Peri's scope wriiten out on a Village Vanguard menu by Bill Evans!

Sadly hepatitis in his youth, drug abuse, and just unbelievable bad luck lead to Bill Evans death at 50. He has left us a huge range of recordings to listen to, as evidenced by the huge discography at the back of this book.

This is a marvellous biography of one the most important Jazz pianists in history.

2 out of 5 stars Distorted, Dull, and Uninformative.......2005-12-25

This is not so much a biography as an annotated discography. Immensely significant aspects of Bill Evans's life are either mentioned only in passing are else skipped over entirely. Mostly this book comprises a seemingly endless and thoroughly tedious compilation of superficial descriptions of Bill Evans recording sessions.

Very occasionally the book attempts to impart some actual musical information, and this is where it falls flattest and is most misleading. The author is purportedly some kind of pianist himself, and he seems to labor under a great pianistic misapprehension. There is in fact an entire page of this book devoted to an appreciation of the tone Evans allegedly teases out of a SINGLE ISOLATED note. Here's a news flash, Mr. Pettinger: The pianist controls ONLY the velocity that the hammer hits the strings, which is to say, the dynamic. He can emphasize certain notes in a chord or a melodic line by playing them louder than others, he can play legato, portato, or staccato by putting more or less silence between notes, and so on, but at a given dynamic on a given piano a single isolated note will sound the same whether played by Bill Evans or your pet cat.

The author also seems to believe that Bill Evans's distinction is that he was the first (or even remains the only) jazz pianist with classical training, which is, of course, nonsense. I'd tentatively (I haven't researched this thoroughly or taken a poll) go so far as to say that classical training for jazz pianists is--and was then--the rule rather than the exception. In any case, classical training is certainly not Bill Evans's DISTINCTION as a jazz pianist.

2 out of 5 stars A Tough Slog.......2005-12-06

Having read The Making of Kind Of Blue just previous to this book, and seeking an insight into Bill Evans, I was quickly disappointed by the academic approach to this book. I'm not a pianist and I don't read music, though I am a musician, and the dry details of every gig and recording were little more stimulating than the reading out loud of a schedule book, in my opinion. The sheer volume of names, sometimes dozens to a page, was mind-numbing--even though I recognized every one.

Music is best appreciated when listened to, not read about, so in my opinion this book deserves to be on the high and dusty shelves of a conservatory library rather than on my shelf next to the dynamic biographies of Miles Davis and yes, Elton John--books that really gave me an insight into the people behind the music.

3 out of 5 stars Record collectors and music devotees listen up.......2005-02-02

A conscientious effort written by a musician concentrating on Mr Evans' recorded legacy with considerable detail and assessment on the various records issued. As Mr Evans was more concerned with music than any other thing in his life, I'm sure he would approved. But the feeling that was the essential element in everything Mr Evans produced is somewhat absent in this bio. Not a gripping read but one I would not be without.

2 out of 5 stars Not for the average reader.......2006-05-14

Call me simple, but I had a hard time gleaning anything useful from this book. I was able to understand a few of her points, but mostly I was just reading words that I couldn't quite grasp or put into use. I would recommend "Great singers on great singing" by Jerome Hines. That has alot of valuable information from some of our favorite singers.

5 out of 5 stars "How To Sing" is About "How To Think Musically".......2001-08-15

I have multiple copies of this great book, including a signed copy of the German first edition. Like the the professional singer who took some real time to analyse this book, I always want to keep a copy close by. ALthough I am just an amateur, I have found that the Great Scale has proved a godsend to my voice. NO BOOK can teach you how to sing -- otherwise the world would be full of Carusos and Lehmanns and Domingos -- but a book such as this can help you refine your thought process around voice production, dramatic presentation, etc. For me, reading the chapter on how Mme. Lehmann worked out her interpretations of lieder was extraordinarily enlightening. Even a novice can learn from that: especially when you listen to her fabulous recording of "Erlkoenig" and can hear how truly her writing reflects her actual interpretation of that wonderful lied. Lehmann's entire life was dedicated to music (she was also a gifted pianist although she never performed on stage) and the 2 editions of arias which she edited and scored for piano make a nice complement to this book. In sum, there is much food for thought here for professional and amateur and operaphile alike. Lehmann was noted for the intellectual validity of her interpretations as well as for her technique: we are fortunate that she left both a comprehensive vocal record and a solid, practical written guide.

5 out of 5 stars How to Sing can help!.......2001-07-24

No book can teach a person how to sing--to sing requires intelligence, fortitude and a good teacher ultimately. If you are looking for a reference and many good thoughts about the subject during your studies, start with "How to Sing" by Lilli Lehmann. Mme. Lehmann's work, "Meine Gesangskunst," translated by R. Aldrich as "How To Sing" is complete in every respect. A word of caution: do NOT read the vowels as if they are in Italian or German--Mr. Aldrich translated EVERYTHING. Long A is as in the word "say" or "Hay", etc--read them as an American would read them. Realize also that her "Auxiliary" vowels are NOT sung as they are, but are merely part of the the MIXTURE--for instance, a long O (long as in the word LOW) contains the brightness of ee (as in three), ay as in say, etc--and these are her way of helping you to concentrate the voice forward--the goal of every true singer being resonance, brightness, the slight nasal quality (not nasal singing)and projection. Her great scale literally saved my voice (see pp. 95-100), and I have been using it exclusively twice daily for 3 years now with excellent results. Her sense of humor is European and refined, her outlook on art is timeless and her interpretations of songs such as Schubert's "Erlkoenig" will add a dimension not available elsewhere. While it may seem like a difficult book to comprehend, it is one that bears reading, re-reading and internalization. Naturally singing is an art that requires intelligence, fortitude and constant re-evalutation, and this book should be a part of any serious singer's library. Another reviewer stated she wished for a book that would teach her to sing--no book can do that, but what books can do is AID us in our studies. Do not rely too much on diagrams--Mme. Lehmann was writing at the end of her long career (her voice being at the end according to every report as lovely as ever--and her recordings, 1906-1907, made after a 40 year career on the major stages of the world at that time bring us a voice remarkably preserved and a technique that few if any ever attain), and as she herself said, the book is intended not only for singers but those who wish to understand the voice in all its particulars. Every singer must find her own instrument, technique and method over time--any teacher who promises a quick fix or fast method is deluding the student. Mme. Lehmann herself recommended a minimum of 3 years hard study before a student should even think of singing songs, and again, her method proved itself in the cases of several noted singers such as Olive Fremstat, Geraldine Farrar and others of note. Buy this book, study hard with a good teacher, take what you can and if possible, listen to the re-mastered versions of Mme. Lehmann's recordings. Go often to opera and concerts to hear the best singing available, and study, study and for a special treat, study some more. It is the only way to achieve anything worthwhile in this life. I have 3 copies of this book: one well worn and marked in, one less worn but read often, and an unmarked copy because I want to keep one handy at all times! My only regret: the original German is not available. Yes, singers must know other languages, and I am no exception to this rule (I sing French, German, Italian and Spanish at present). Buy the book, read it often, learn from the BEST! Remember: she sang herself under Wagner, Puccini, Verdi and other truly great composers and conductors. A truly intelligent singer will take what she likes and leave the rest of many sources--add Mme. Lehmann's sage advice and outlook, and you will be adding the best! Amazon.com can help with obtaining her recordings and the book--I ordered my recordings two years ago from Europe, (Amazon.de, the German branch) and they are obtainable more easily now through American Amazon.com. Again, I cannot recommend this book highly enough, and as one who has sung for 20 years in churches, synagogues(as acting cantor for 6 years every Sabbath, Festival and High Holiday service, some of which are 3 or more hours long!) and smaller theaters, I have had great success using Lehmann's teachings. I also would refer the reader to two other books available through Amazon.com: "Great Singers on Great Singing" by Jerome Hines, and "Great Singers on the Art of Singing" by Harriet Brower--Shirley Verret and Amelita Galli-Curcci used variations of the Great Scale of Lehmann throughout their careers, and in Brower's book there are several recommendations of Lehmann's art, one from Geraldine Farrar (who sang with Caruso) and the other being the account of "A Visit with Mme. Lehmann" by Ms. Brower. Remember: anything truly worth attaining will not come without work!

    2 out of 5 stars Not a Easy Read.......2001-05-10

Although Lilli Lehmann speaks English in this book, she uses bloated, way over the top words to make a point. If I have to get a dictionary out to understand teh lessons then i am wasting my time. (Bear in mind I have the copy without a translastion).

Because the book was hard to comprehend - my attention spand was cut short. I never made it past Chapter one.I did not like the book at all. A total WASTE of cash.

I need a book that is straight forward so I can learn how to sing correctly, instead of elaborate verbal piece of NOTHING.

5 out of 5 stars This Method Works For Me.......2000-06-15

My girlfriend has the alto edition of this--it sounded good but the keys were all wrong for me. This one fits my voice, and the information is good: not overly detailed information, but very straightforward and clear. I sing through about a half of the CD before I go to band practise and it works, my voice is warmed up for singing and I don't strain. From the book I've learned a lot more about how my voice operates. Thumbs up from me.

        Book Description

This sensitive, sympathetic book helps readers determine whether or not weight-loss surgery is right for them. Author Michelle Ritchie shares both her personal journey as a successful weight-loss surgery patient and her professional advice as an experienced weight-loss counselor. In sometimes funny, sometimes painful prose, she discusses her life before and after surgery and bluntly analyzes her own complicity in her obesity. As she describes her four-year battle to maintain her new, healthy weight, Ritchie emphasizes personal responsibility, reminding readers that surgery is not a quick-fix solution but a tool that works only as well as the choices patients make after the procedure. Also included are a detailed description of gastric bypass surgery; its pros and cons; tips for keeping weight off after surgery; daily food plans and sample shopping lists; information on cross-addictions; and a thoughtful discussion on intimacy and relationships after surgery.

        5 out of 5 stars A Joyful Must Read.......very, very good........2006-08-01

This is a must read. Each characters within each stories was exciting to read about. How there lives have changed with God in there heart. They were able to reach and achieve a higher walk with Christ. Thank you Jacquelin Thomas and may God bless you contineously with your writing.

        5 out of 5 stars Heart Songs.......2006-01-03

This was a very enjoyable book. All of the stories were touching and had a message about love and faith. The book was very well written, only a few typo's. The writing was sincere, the messages were clear, and the stories were heart felt. It's good to pick up a book about the goodness of God. Believer's and non-believer's should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Speak to my heart..........2005-04-09

There is nothing sweeter, outside of the love of God, than a loving relationship with the one who makes your heart flutter and your pulse race just by looking at them. To love and be loved...oh what a wondrous feeling. In HOW SWEET THE SOUND, authored by highly acclaimed authors Jacquelin Thomas, Francis Ray and Felicia Mason, we are introduced to six individuals who find love when they least expect it, and for one couple, a second chance at love.

As a huge fan of both the romance and Christian fiction genres, this combination of both really touched my heart. Each author's story was heartfelt, heartwarming, and a beautiful testament to true love. They were romantic without being sappy, and even though the novel is faith based, it is not preachy, but the underlying message of waiting on and believing in God for all things is apparent and speaks volumes. HOW SWEET THE SOUND has already been added to my list of all-time favorites.

4 out of 5 stars Then Sings My Soul.......2005-03-18

Jacquelin Thomas, Francis Ray and Felicia Mason join together to bring their readers stories based around the Peaceful Rest Church. Good preaching is essential in any church, but Peaceful Rest Church is known for the soul stirring vocalists and choirs. While singing for the Lord, the characters in these stories also find love.

In Make a Joyful noise by Jacquelin Thomas, Desiree Coleman sings for the Lord, loudly and badly. When famous R&B sensation Bradley Rhodes comes to Peaceful Rest to take over the choir, he is horrified and insists that Desiree be dropped from the choir. Desiree is determined to sing in the choir and challenges Bradley to make her a better singer. What Bradley does not count on is how this songtress makes her way into his heart.

In Then Sings My Soul by Francis Ray, Grace Thompson is the staunch hymns only choir director of Peaceful Rest Church. Caleb Jackson is the hip-hop choir director at Summerset Junior College. When Grace is paired with Caleb Jackson, to join the two choirs to perform at the annual Harvest Celebration at the college, she is beside herself. Grace is convinced that Caleb and his version of gospel music is the work of the devil and will be detrimental to the celebration. Instead, when she and Caleb begin to work together they are able to come to terms with their individual style of music and with each other..

In Heart Songs by Felicia Mason, Carys Shaw and the Rev. TC Holloway become reacquainted at their 25th college class reunion. Both are widowed and battling personal demons. An impromptu performance leads to the choir reuniting to sing again. Rehearsing and reminiscing brings Carys and TC together. Before long, it becomes apparent that the Lord has brought them back together again for a different reason. .

This anthology brings romance into Christian Fiction on a higher level. The couples are well rooted in their faith and live a lifestyle conducive to their convictions. These love stories are tasteful and romantic. This is a book for the Christian Fiction lover and the Romance lover. I am sure they will enjoy as I did.

        5 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable!.......2005-02-23

I'm going to have to give this one 5 stars. I occassionally purchase Harlequin Inspired novels and have enjoyed them, but haven't always felt the spiritual depth that the editors allowed these authors to explore. This was a pleasant surprise. I really enjoyed this book and pray the publisher will continue to give African American readers stories we can relate to. Thanks to all the authors for their great stories.

        Blessings,

This book is a valuable contribution to laryngeal knowledge and presents a concise profile of the anatomy of the larynx. Features exercises that will restructure the voice and teach the student a new way to handle the instrument.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars I agree!.......2006-11-07

I agree wholeheartedly with the first reviewer. This book tells you how to sing, not just what should happen in good singing. I don't know of any other book that spends the time needed to address setting up the structure for singing and especially the tongue and high larynx which causes most of the problems that as a voice teacher I encounter! This is amazing.getting over the urge to gag is really worth it! I'd like to be in contact with other teachers and singers who find this really great. It has meant so much to many of my students who went to teachers who seemed to be afraid of this approach and who use only the ear and imagery to overcome real physical ignorance or misunderstandings. There is help out there for the tight, retracting, tense and lazy tongue. What freedom this offers!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing technique will improve your voice!.......2005-06-28

This book is wonderful and enlightening. It addresses the structure of your instrument, your voice, and he trains you how to use it properly. You start by NOT singing. You exercise using certain muscles and not using others. It is dramatically different than anything else I've read or been taught. There are three mechanisms that work together to produce your sound: the sound-producing mechanism, the sound-supporting mechanism, and the word-producing mechanism. He gives you many exercises for each. It will seem weird at first, getting used to a new concept. As a singer, I never had thought about how I made sound, I just sung and if it sounded bad I'd get frustrated and try to blindly fix it. But this book teahces you how to do it properly, so that even if you're under stress you will be concious of how your voice is reacting and still be able to sing properly. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in singing or even speaking publicly.
