Customer Reviews:
Great book for first-timer and DIY'er........2005-09-01
If you are attempting your first drywall project, haven't hung it in a long time, or want to know how to do it better, then this is the book for you.
Besides just hanging drywall, this book goes into:
Selecting the drywall
Preparing the wall (masonry, wood, steel)
Cutting holes
Repairing damaged drywall
Fixing popped nails and screws
Soundproofing
Sure, if you are a professional installer you may find the book a bit trite, but the weekend warrior should find it very useful. The first paragraph in the book: "This book is written for the do-it-yourselfer who brings beginning to intermediate building skills to drywalling projects large and small." I think that says it all.
If you have never hung drywall before this book will have you doing your first project this weekend. I highly recommend it.
Light on the art of drywalling..........2003-07-07
This is a great broad overview of the drywalling process. Lots of pictures of these two guys in blue and red. However, it doesn't tell me what I want to know, the art of getting two boards taped together. The taping chapter needs to be tripled in size.
Good Overall Drywall Book.......2002-10-25
This book gives a good overall treatment of the drywall process. It covers tools, supplies, and techniques. However, a few of the layout drawings are hard to understand, particularly those on ceilings. It could also benefit from including more detail on topics such as finishing.
Wonderful, very thorough.......2000-07-28
As someone who has had a little rudimentary drywall experience I found this book to be an excellent and thorough treatment of what is possible and how to do it. The illustrations are great, including photographs, structural drawings and drawings of workers in action. These drawings are especially well done and show you how to hold and use tools most efficiently in step-by-step procedures.
As you would expect, the book begins with tools and materials. The basic hand tools are described along with sophisticated professional equipment for drywall handling. Ways to efficiently and safely handle large sheets are shown. Drywall comes in a wide variety of types and sizes that are not "off the shelf" items at your lumber yard, but can be ordered. Here you will find out when and why you should use these specialty items that can be very advantageous in the right situation. Also covered are all the various fastening and corner treatment options and the advantages of each.
There is a detailed section on preparing walls and ceilings, including framing repairs or modifications that might be needed. This includes enhancements such as adding a niche and soundproofing. Preparation for drywalling over masonry and with steel framing is also covered. Then the techniques of measuring, cutting and hanging the drywall are presented. Special situations such as curved or irregular walls, stairways and arches are emphasized. This book shows you how to handle the difficult applications.
Drywall finishing, troubleshooting and repairs are also covered in detail, including a number of textured finishes that can be applied directly to the drywall. Many of these can be done using joint compound and they add an easy but sophisticated premium touch to your walls. Written with a personal touch, expert tips throughout and a "can-do" attitude, this is the book you need to get those walls up safely and securely.
A "must" for all do-it-yourself drywall installers!.......2000-03-04
Drywall: Pro Tips For Hanging And Finishing features more than 380 illustrations and color photos to guide the reader through any drywall project. Drywall provides information on tools, equipment, materials, and select chapters present step-by-step coverage on preparing walls and ceilings, and the importance of measuring correctly. Of special utility is the information on hanging drywall in tricky areas like stair and curved walls, and the chapter on troubleshooting and repairs. Ideal for the do-it-yourself home remodeler, Drywall is the only "how to" instruction and reference book that will be needed.

Good on building, lacking on electric........2006-08-25
While the sections on planning and construction are quite helpful, I was disappointed in the section on electricity. A barn is considered an outbuilding, and local electrical codes may be different for residences and outbuildings. Barns are often used to house livestock or poultry, but the book does not address the different requirements for farm wiring.
Residential wiring usually requires NM (non-metallic) cable, but in a building may be subjected to high moisture like that in a livestock barn, NMC or UF (Underground Feed) wiring is required. In addition, the boxes for outlets and fixtures must usually be sealed against moisture and dust.
Author John Wagner does say that it is important to work with the local electrical inspector and know the local code requirments as they vary greatly.
building ,audio,studio from, scraching.......2001-10-26
References to buil an audio studio in the simplest fom me by home archetitural process.
practical barn building.......2001-08-08
A useful book on the various practical aspects of building a simple (or not so simple) barn. Useful to a do-it-yourselfer, or as a reference to someone using contractors. Recommended.
The perfect builders' guide.......2000-04-26
Builder John Wagner shows the versatility that's possible with one good barn. Using a 24' by 30' plan and simple framing, Wagner alters the interior layout to create a tractor garage and garden shed, a studio, a workshop and office, and a stable. His ideas should be considered by anyone looking for practical uses for old barns. Besides being a design guide, this book covers all the basics of light frame construction with easy-to-read text, photos and great illustrations.
WOW! Fab book.......2000-03-18
Boy, I couldn't believe it when I got this book. It covers everything from ground prep, foundation, framing, configuring the building to fit it's use.....on and on and on! It blocks everything out, so if you are not comfy with doing that one piece yourself, you can contract that piece out and pick up from there. I can't wait to get my hands dirty! Read the whole thing first.

Handbook of Biosurveillance: Helpful Book for Public Health, ICPs.......2006-09-07
A valuable book, published earlier this year, provides a practical, comprehensive examination of biosurveillance--the systematic process of data collection and analysis for the purposes of detecting and characterizing outbreaks of disease in humans and animals in a timely manner.
The Handbook of Biosurveillance, by Michael Wagner, Andrew Moore, and Ron Aryel (Elsevier Inc., 2006), can greatly benefit its target audience of epidemiologists, health directors and authorities, infection control practitioners, researchers and IT professionals at organizations that conduct biosurveillance. Wagner and Moore are well known in the biosurveillance and academic communities; they led the team of software developers at the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University who, with funding from the Department of Homeland Security, created the Real-Time Outbreak and Disease Surveillance (RODS) system, now successfully used in 12 of the U.S. states, Canada and Taiwan.
The Handbook of Biosurveillance defines and describes the state-of-the-art in biosurveillance practice and research and is unique in the depth of its coverage of all facets of this emerging discipline. The book offers practical advice for first responders and public health officials as well as an in-depth discussion of the theoretical underpinnings of biosurveillance for researchers. It includes and offers expert advice on how to construct and evaluate biosurveillance systems, assemble and analyze data, and build relationships across organizations. It also includes a section devoted to supporting and improving the decision-making ability of public health authorities and other decision-makers. The book provides a basis for determining when available biosurveillance data supports issuing an alert or not.
For those who have already decided to embrace biosurveillance by constructing surveillance systems, the book can serve as a training manual. It offers the expertise of leading authorities in the standards required by biosurveillance, the micro- and macro-aspects of constructing a system from top to bottom, how to achieve inter-organizational integration, and the legal and ethical requirements of biosurveillance practitioners.
A chapter of the book on project management features a review of collaboration between the RODS Lab and the Tarrant County (Texas) Advanced Practice Center (APC). That effort led to the successful development of a regional surveillance network in North Central Texas. In two years, the network grew from merely an idea to a national model of successful biosurveillance. Today, the network collects and analyzes emergency department chief complaint data from 34 hospitals and three urgent care centers and serves more than 30 public health professionals responsible for ensuring the health of more than 6 million residents in Dallas, Fort Worth and the surrounding communities. The book's project management chapter accurately covers the ways the APC and the RODS Lab worked together in planning, executing, monitoring and controlling the work necessary to bring hospitals onto the network in a logical, effective manner.
The book is worth its $99.95 cost if you might need an insightful collection of practical, how-to information on biosurveillance. The APC wishes the book had been available when it first began research into biosurveillance in 2004. Its contents would have been a gold mine to the APC then - just as it can be today to those seeking either to launch new biosurveillance programs or expand their existing initiatives.

Customer Reviews:
A very fine overview of most important aspects of Wagner........1998-04-20
This book provides an excellent one-volume treatment of most of the major aspects of Wagner's work, and the influence he had and continues to have. The essays are by recognized authorities, and provide a generally balanced view. Particularly good is the essay on his complicated attitude towards Judaism, and the several essays which deal with his influence outside of the strictly musical sphere. The only thing missing is a biographical overview. For one who is interested in having more information about Wagner than what is available in Grove or Grout, this book, along with Gutman's biography, will provide a very fine introduction to Wagner.

The Great Outdoors .......2007-09-09
I was very satisfied with the condition of the book. So was my son Joe, to whom I gave it.The Essential Wilderness Navigator: How to Find Your Way in the Great Outdoors, Second Edition
Book Description
The Dramatic rise in Popularity of Mission Furniture has made it increasingly difficult to find. And more often than not, those pieces that are available also have enormous prices attached to them. Making your own Mission-style furniture provides not only a relatively economical way to have Mission furniture in your home, but also the satisfaction of building an authentic replica of a valuable period piece. Throughout the book, explicit photographs and abundant line drawings accompany clear and carefully explained instructions. The opening chapters lay the groundwork for selecting the right wood, assembling the required tools, and understanding the necessary skills for building each of the ten projects that follow. The woodworker with intermediate skills should be able to tackle any of the pieces with confidence and successful results. And the beginning woodworker, by starting with less demanding pieces, can develop valuable skills.
Customer Reviews:
Not the best book of mission furniture.......2003-01-14
After reading Blair Howard's "Arts and Crafts Furniture", I was expecting a lot from this book and it didn't deliver. I agree with all of Donald Thomson's complaints above. The joinery seemed questionable and he took short cuts I would not have made. Additionally, I felt his pieces lacked the elegance that the better mission designs have, both by Stickley and by others. However, the book is very detailed and easy to follow, so it should be easy for a beginning woodworker to follow. Joining boards and cutting mortices appeared to be the most advanced things he ever did, and he avoided cutting mortice and tenon joints whenever possible.
Great book for beginners.......2001-10-04
Wagner has done a great job explaining wood working techniques for the beginner. This is a great book for beginning woodworkers to use when building this Mission furntiure. I built the table. Had great results. (A nice historical introduction makes the best reading in the book!)
Recommended with Reservations.......1999-12-12
This book included chapters on Gustav Stickley, joinery and woodworking techniques, wood finishing and upholstery. The heart of the book is ten projects, complete with large color photos. They range from a hall mirror to a Morris chair. Some designs may be original, one is from Popular Mechanics' Mission Furniture, How to Make It, and the rest seem to be based upon articles from Stickley's The Craftsman magazine.
Not surprisingly, since most of the general designs are based on Stickley, they are on the whole quite attractive. They are simplified versions of production designs, and were originally meant for the home woodworker. Unlike the reproduction book Making Authentic Craftsman Furniture, there is a wealth of detail and all of the pieces have a place in the modern home. The author has included two pieces that I call Neo-Craftsman: a coffee table and a hall or foyer magazine table.
The engineering of the pieces, beneath the facade, may cause some problems. In particular, Mr. Wagner seems to be unaware of the problems that seasonal wood movement can cause when large panels are tightly secured. For instance, his coffee table top is doweled in place. I should be mentioned that the author is very fond of using dowels EVERYWHERE in the furniture. He even uses them to assemble drawers.
I recommend this book, with reservations. Like most similar books, you must have a shop full of power tools, and be familiar with their use, so it really is not for the complete novice. Knowledge of doweling and making mortises and tenons is a must, and it seems that one would have to have a jointer and a planer (or be accomplished with the hand tool equivalents) for the majority of the projects. There are a wealth of exploded drawings of the parts, but they are poorly drawn. I suspect that the illustrator Ms. Barbara Smullen is not a draftsman or a woodworker. Some of the perspectives are drawn wrong, and one would think that some tenons are haunched when they are not. However, all of the measurements seem to be correct, so one can go by them.
Note For The Advanced Woodworker:
It is useful to see completed pieces from the Stickley book. I don't like some of Wagner's joinery techniques, but you can use proper tabletop fasteners and can properly dovetail the drawers, etc. Another thing he has done is skip tenon shoulders for some spindles - I guess to make construction easier. Of course, then the edges of the mortises have to be perfect. One odd thing that I noticed in the photos is that he doesn't seem to use quartersawn oak anywhere. I wonder whether this book was a project assigned by a publisher...
Excellent.......1999-10-17
When I became interested in building "Mission Style" furniture I purchased this book. The designs are wonderfully illustrated and easily followed. I particularly appreciated the comments provided by the author as to the skill level required to complete a specific project. The beginning of the book provides a brief but informative history of Gustav Stickley and some important techniques that are required in building the projects.
I would highly recommend this book to any beginning interested in building "Mission Style" furniture. This book has inspired me to read more about Gustav Stickley and to build more challenge pieces of furniture. Absolutely Excellent!
