Golden Classics on 256 pages! A Zeppelin must-have!.......2006-07-26
I only wish this book contained ALL the songs! The tablature is outstanding and truly what any major Zeppelin guitarist fan is looking for. The solos are included, and unlike "Led Zeppelin Complete," this is a reliable, well-put-together arrangement of GREAT Zeppelin songs. The only bad thing about it is that the fabulous maker of the book did not transcribe MORE songs! At $15.72, this is the best deal for classic Zeppelin tabs, BELIEVE ME! "Dazed and Confused" is soooo intricate, giving me MORE than I asked for! And when I flipped to "What is and What Should Never Be," I realized just how much sense this book really makes. Definitely for experienced guitar players with ears "experienced" in the sound of LED ZEPPELIN. This book will help you to better understand the music behind the madness of this quartet. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED--grab this gold before it is gone!!
Zeppelin.......2006-04-15
All I have say is "Wow" this book is incredible. I've been playing guitar for about 3 months now, and I'm a HUGE Zeppelin fan so I decided to get this book. I think I might have bit off a little more than I can chew. I can play the riffs from a few songs, but that's about it. But, as they always say "Practice makes perfect." If you're experienced with a guitar, I would HIGHLY recommend this.
Truly authentic tab.......2005-11-04
This book is for real, unlike the "Complete?" book which is tabbed incorrectly. I've been playing now for 17 years and this book will give you all the intricacies of the songs chosen. With one technical exception: and this is for true authentic players, the tab to "bron-y'aur stomp" is presented as a capoed song in open F. On the Led Zep DVD however, Page plays this uncapoed in open G.
All others seem to be right on. Well worth the money.
I highly recommend this book. And it has the complete solos too.
Doug
A Good Collection.......2005-09-02
These tabs are terrific!! I just can't believe that "Over the Hills and Far Away" was not one of the offerings. Worth the money despite this flaw.
For Advanced Guitar Players.......2004-11-17
The book is beutifully designed with the most intricate notes possible. When looking at it, you feel as if an entire orchestra can be created from it. They did a brilliant job with making it as close to the real sound of Zeppelin as possible. However, it is certainly not for begginers. if you are a great musician already and want to play Led Zeppelin, this is the book for you.

90% band/10% promoter!.......2004-12-26
This book is a must for any Zeppelin fan,Peter Grant defined what the roll of a manager should be,Led Zep are a great band and left a huge larger than life legacy that wont be repeated again. They may have been overlooked or perhaps just done their thing.I believe without the guidance of Peter Grant and his headkickin ways I dont think Zeppelin would of been the rock gods they were.He made the band rich beyond their wildest dreams,he wheeled and dealed and got them gigs at sellout arenas.Peter Grant was the man,Led Zep were his boys.Do yourself a favour and buy this book if you want to know what rock n roll was about.
Much filler, still fries the bacon.......2004-02-12
I liked this well enough. It held me all the way through. But it really seemed as though it should have been an extended magazine article or part of another, more detailed book. I walked away feeling that I did not have a better understanding of G than when I came, and THAT'S a problem.
Another great book..........2003-06-16
...by Chris Welch, and this time on the heavy-hitting mananger behind Led Zeppelin: Peter Grant. Despite a few glaring factual errors, such as the story behind Swan Song's (Zeppelin's vanity 70's record label)logo, and a few typos this is another good Welch-penned Zeppelin effort. Being a big fan of the band I was very surprised on the chapters devoted to the group's film Song Remains The Same, and their devastating 1977 US tour. These chapters alone are worth your time and money. This book, S. Davis'Hammer Of The Gods, and Richard Cole's Stairway To Heaven, read back to back will tell you all you'll need to know about the best hard rock band the world has ever known: Led Zeppelin!
Answers a Whooooole Lotta Nagging Questions.......2003-02-20
Much insight on the band on and off stage. And Peter Grant, this brilliant and threataning manager is brought out from behind the shadows and emerges as a pivotal individual in rock history.
Simply a fascinating man, who was just as human as you or I. If he made any errors, the worst in his life were hiring John Bindon onto his security staff, and marrying a woman who was not a "single man woman.". I also now understand why he was referred to as the "fifth member of the Band".
The Book is very informative and thorough. The only problem I had with the book is that Welch even considered using Richard Cole as a source of information. That cost him one star. I also don't like the photographs of Peter giving us the finger. That almost cost him another star.
Good book.......2002-10-26
I really appreciated this book. Chris Welsh has been one of the greatest insiders of Led Zeppelin and provides numberless details about Peter and his relation with the band. I liked very much the info that came from interviews with people related, like Mickie Most, Allan Callan, Ed Bricknell and Warren Grant, among others.
The book also has the merit of being original on a very worn out subject. Indeed a very good buy for both Zep die-hards and neophites.

Book Description
Jimmy Page - Magus, Musician, Man is a meticulously researched life story of Led Zeppelin's legendary guitarist and producer. From his childhood in war-torn Britain and his pivotal role in the recording studios that launched the British Invasion of the '60s to his milestone achievements, his dark, nefarious excesses with Led Zeppelin, and his emergence as a revered cultural icon and honored philanthropist, this biography - the first ever written about Jimmy Page - portrays all his spiritual, artistic, and personal dimensions. Swinging London, the Sunset Strip, Bron-yr-Aur, Kashmir, and Clarksdale: Magus, Musician, Man traverses through all of Page's hallowed stomping grounds and tells, at last, the complete story of one of rock 'n' roll's most enigmatic and influential talents.
Customer Reviews:
Received the book so promptly that it made my head spin. .......2007-07-19
I was in shock with the swiftness I received my book and the book was in perfect order too. Thank you.
Decent but not earth shattering.......2007-07-16
Case is a Led Zeppelin fan, that much is evident but he belabors the point losing all objectivity about his subject. The only thing new Case has to offer is his own, at times mind numbing analysis, as his book completely relies on secondary sources, much to this reader's disappointment. A good editor would have corrected the many grammatical errors not to mention some of the, albeit minor, factual errors in the work. He sums up entire tours and albums mostly to a few paragraphs focusing more on his own analysis (actually referring to Page's riffs on Trampled Underfoot as "Bootylicious.") Case offers little glimpse into the real life of Jimmy Page and his post Led Zeppelin accomplishments (although he did try to contact Page for his input). Despite the numerous flaws, this book was a fun read for a serious fan, particularly as a refresher. Still, Page fans will have to wait for something truly worthwhile. Hats off to Case for trying.
The cover art is nice.......2007-07-10
I have been a Page fan more than half my life. I started playing guitar because of Page. I was interested when I saw this book on the shelf and bought it immediately. It sat on my floor for weeks because I just felt it would be a let down, but finally curiosity got me to pick it up.
It was a let down. There is not a single point in this book that is original in any way. Most of the stories told have been told over and over and over again. It seems silly to try to write a biography about a guy who doesn't want to have a biography written about him.
I once asked the boxer, Marvin Hagler, if he would be interested in having a biography written about him. He said no. So, I did not write it. Not exactly a complex decision.
Jimmy Page rocks. This book does not.
An adequate bio of an extraordinary man.......2007-07-07
The packaging for this book is geared to sell. A beautiful black cover page, excellent photos, and an intriguing reference to Page as a Magus. Knowing all about Jimmy's excursion into the occult and his fascination with Aliester Crowley I still decided to purchase this book. I wasn't exactly disappointed that I had done so, however, the content definitely doesn't live up to the packaging. This is little here revealed about Page that a Zeppelin aficionado wouldn't know, and while it is noteworthy that the author shuns the outrageous media-hyped tour stories, it is at the same time unduly sparse about the facts of Zeppelins road career. The author also seems to lack insight on Plant's backgroud. For example, he completely misses the obvious allusions to JRR Tolkien's classic trilogoy "The Lord of the Rings" in songs such as "Ramble On", "The Battle of Evermore", and indeed "Stairway to Heaven". He can be somewhat forgiven for missing the reference in Plant's dog's name Strider.
The books strong points are when he discusses Page's career as a studio musician, and his involvement with Jemina Page his current wife and their philanthropic endeavors. Unfortunately this doesn't rescue the book from it's otherwise mediocre content. The Lord of the Rings (50th Anniversary Edition)
sadly underwhelmed, but at least some of the pictures are great.......2007-06-13
I had perhaps unfairly high hopes for this book, and to be honest read it cover to cover in about 24 hours. So I guess it either has something going for it or I am so starved for new biographical material on Jimmy Page that even a marginal rehashing of well-worn interview materials is still strongly compelling to me. As pointed out in other reviews anyone who has researched Page's career with any reasonable amount of due dilligence is not going to find much, if anything, new in Case's tome. In addition to the dearth of fresh material, I also at times found the narrative structure (ie -- combining pieces of disparate, sometimes strangely isolated, source interview snippets together to illustrate a point) to be a bit presumptuous. My main beef, however, comes when the author gets cute with his prose and mixes Led Zeppelin song titles in with his editorializing -- a truly amateurish literary device. Things get embarrassing every time he pullls this stunt.
That said, there's nothing really terrible about the project. The man knows his subject and is clearly a fan first and historian second. The book would have been stronger had Case stayed with his strength as a researcher and rounded things out more fully. Too me Magus, Musician, Man feels like a People Magazine caliber collage as opposed to a complete biography, unauthorized or otherwise. Maybe in light of the fact that Page isn't talking that's the best we can expect. Even so, with what is out there, and what the author tapped into for source material, a more complete picture was in his grasp. Case clearly could have used a good editor to clean up the multiple glaring typos and reign him in when he got too clever for his own good. The latter issues fall square on the shoulders of the publishers.

Book Description
Led Zeppelin may have disbanded in 1980, but their legacy lives on. Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham always insisted that the music they made, onstage or in the studio, was the important thing. This meticulous book turns away from Zeppelin's well-chronicled antics on the road to explore what made them the biggest rock band of their day and an enduring influence on generations of musicians. With many rare and seldom-seen photographs, this is the definitive vindication of Led Zeppelin's place at the pinnacle of 20th century musical achievement.
Customer Reviews:
A Top Zep Book.......2007-07-03
One of the best Led Zeppelin books, ever. Over 300 large pages with small print and filled with photos l'd never seen. Deals mainly with the music, its creation and presentation and, doesn't get bogged in drama or supposition. Mr. Shadwick is sometimes opinionated, but it only reveals his deep respect and knowledge of the band. The only disappointment is that the story always ends with Bonham's death. Why can't someone just lie and report that he's living a peaceful existence in the Alps or something?
Well detailed, yet very prejudice..........2007-06-27
Keith Shadwick without a doubt has compiled the most detailed account of the bands career, interviews, and quotes; yet his "musical snob elitist" attitude gets in the way of enjoying this book to its full extent. Keith finds a problem with literally every single song the band had ever recorded, even down to the tinest detail, and constantly quips how great other lesser known, or more under appriciated older musicians are when comparing every song to older ones. It is to no Zeppelin fan's suprise that the band had borrowed ideas from other artists, from pop to folk music, but at that time in the music industry it was normal to cover other bands music and it was a time when bands wrote singles and did not worry about full albums like zeppelin did. His personal opinions make you wonder at times if he is even a fan of the band or not, by trying to make the best effort to disguise his disliking of the band in favor of more "pure" musicians who put out more "inspired" music, as he puts it over and over. His information about the tours, attitudes and visions of the band, and facts are wonderful and that is what kept me reading the book, but his obvious musical snobbery (many times simply just his WELL OVERTHOUGHT opinion about things) kept this book from being what it could have been. Rock n' Roll is not about sheer perfection, or always being musically correct, thats where the passion and originality comes from, but to Keith it seems as if he finds a flaw in anything and everything that Zeppelin ever recorded from track listing, to favoring obviously lesser quality b-sides (to make him look intelligent for liking "poor tom" more than "bron-yur-a-stomp"), to saying how out of pitch Robert is, or Page's "uninspired guitar solo", to Jones "overplaying" keyboard and bass lines, to Bonham obviously taking this drum pattern from the following songs. The fact is, the band wrote what they wrote and took in all their influences. You can't name a rock band that has not taken an idea from another group and gone with it, or showing obviuous influence...that is not a fault of musicians by any means.
The book is a fine read for the information, but the author's personal opnions really ruined alot of it.
THE Led Zeppelin book to read.......2007-05-31
WOW WOW WOW. This book is THE biography of Led Zeppelin to read.
It covers everything factual you would like to know about the band. All the other reviews are good. You won't be disappointed buying this!!! Awesome!
this is the best historical account yet.......2007-04-13
This is the best historical account I have read - and I have read most of the books on Zeppelin that have been published. What makes this book different and in my opinion better, is that it is much less about the partying and much more about the process that they used to create the music. There is great historical info on the Yardbirds and good accounts of concerts.
Most if not all of the photos have been published but that is understandable since there is limited supply of photos. It's unfortunate that Zeppelin didn't seem to have a staff photographer along for the ride. Same is true for the limited video shot of the band.
If there is a downside to this book it is the editing. It is written by a british author and it shows. It was not edited/translated for American readers so you will need to read some of the passages twice to get past what seems like bad structure. British readers may not agree but it does have a few rough spots for American readers. This is no reason not to consider this book.
If you are a Zeppelin fan or are just interested in the history of the music scene at that time, then you should add this book to your collection. It is the best Zeppelin book yet. It's not "Hammer of the Gods" which is a disputed accounting of the band's history. This book is full of foot notes identifying sources - It is much more honest in describing the bands history.
No gossip, no occult, no sharks..........2006-09-18
What sets this new group biography apart from all the rest (including the wonderful Stephen Davis "Hammer of the Gods") is that the author seeks to inform only about the music. No gossip, no rumors, just music. Shadwick sheds light on both studio and live performances and encourages the listener to appreciate Led Zeppelin with new ears.
There are many volumes available about LZ, but I think with this new book by Keith Shadwick we now have the definitive biography.

Book Description
This book is a 648 page expose about Led Zeppelin and a Magick/Satanic cult in England called the Argenteum Astrum, which means "Silver Star." The founder of this cult is Aleister Crowley, whose books are for sale on Amazon.com.
The major doctrines of this cult are presented in the most famous songs in the Led Zeppelin catalog. The cult's agenda is the destruction of the Christian faith. Very controversial and intellectually stimulating.
Customer Reviews:
not even worth a laugh.......2006-10-29
I will make it easy for you:
At one point the author quotes "The Rover", in particular the line "I used to rock it sometimes I'd roll it..." and does his best to determine the evil significance of the words "rock it" and yes, "roll it".
Not even amusing in a sarcastic light but a complete waste of time and money.
In recent years Jimmy Page has become a patron of ABC Trust (Action for Brazil's Children Trust) donating his time, energy and money to help Brazilian street children so i encourage you to spend your cash wisely.
Or you can buy "Fallen Angel" and allow a self-admitted drug casualty to explain his true meaning of "rock it" and "roll it."
It's up to you of course.
Backward Masking?.......2006-07-15
Look, folks, I have to point out that this is one of those "backward masking" theories. Regardless of whatever other research Friend has done, and he does seem sincere, the bit about backward messages recorded into rock music slipping into our unconscious ruins the rest of the book. There's just no psychological evidence that this would work, even if bands like Led Zeppelin were trying it. If you're expecting, as I was, a real examination of Jimmy Page's admiration of Crowley and how it affected his music, be warned.
Don't Buy This Book!.......2006-07-12
Usually I would not write a review for any book, but, I felt compelled after wasting my precious time reading this crap. This so called book is the worst collection of words I have ever had the misfortune of reading in my life! The author sounds like he has been stuck under a "religous" rock all his life and has to put his "brand" on everything about the greatest rock band ever. Grasping at straws in the dark, Mr. Friend tries to explain the reasons behind all the lyrics in Led Zeppelin's cataloge, but , instead, he makes a complete idiot of himself by taking a "holy-roller" high road in explaining the reasons of his beliefs. No doubt, he has done his research on Alister Crowley, but, some of the ideas he presents are completely assanine. For example: all of Zeppelin"s lyrics were written not by members of the band, but, by Satan himself. Or that the band wants to convert all their fans to Satanism, please. You would be better off by taking the money your going to spend on this book and flush it down the toilet. Thomas Friend should stop writing books and write a written apology to the band, or better yet, go crawl back under the rock from which he came. My opnion is based on the 102 pages out of 632 that I have read of this so-called book. Please be warned, avoid this piece of trash like the plague. Any serious fan of Led Zeppelin will feel the exact same way about this abomination. Pure blasphemy.

Book Description
In this wickedly entertaining and thoroughly informed homage to one of rock music's towering pinnacles, Erik Davis investigates the magicblack or otherwisethat surrounds this album. Carefully peeling the layers from each song, Davis reveals their dark and often mystical rootsand leaves the reader to decide whether [FOUR SYMBOLS] is some form of occult induction or just an inspired, brilliantly played rock album.
Customer Reviews:
Does it all have to do with the occult? .......2007-09-13
Well, whether it does or not, Erik Davis takes a heavy duty occult perspective into this book about Zeppelin's fourth disc. And it works because no matter some of the odd observations, no matter how he twists them to fit into his occult mindset, no matter whether it all gels with me, he's smart enough to get heavy-handed, and then pull back and let the reader know that, well, that's one take, you make your own. Either way, this book is entertaining and involving and one of the best of this series.

33 1/3 Led Zeppelin 4.......2007-01-21
I love everthing about this book.I love the mystery behind the music , the myth's associated with the band and the way the writer presented each item and infused them together.A treat for all Zeppelin fans.Would buy it again just to have 2 copies.1 for the bedroom and 1 for the office.
Pretty solid.......2006-10-02
While not my favorite book that I've read in the 33 1/3 series, Davis's book on IV does a nice job of exploring some of Zeppelin's influences and does what this series is so great at--it brings the album back to life. Sure the book may be a bit flawed--of course it's far better for most of what passes for music criticism these days (33 1/3 is, by the way, consistently better than most, especially in terms of exploring historical and social contexts)--but it made me bust out a record that I thought I'd listened to death and fall in love with it all over again with brand new ears. I could write similar reviews for every book in this series that I've read, but I just happened to check out the page here and thought I'd weigh in with my opinion.
The Red Pill Of Rock.......2005-08-06
Neither a tome, nor a grimoire --not quite a cultural critique-- nor a mere record review. Perhaps it's an elfen rune, or recipe book for the imaginal mediascapes of nostalgia. Maybe it's a long bong-hit's rant in a Linklater film. In fact, it's almost the inverse of Jorge Luis Borges' longwinded tales of hypothetical texts, because it's about an alien implant embedded deep within our psyches: Led Zep's fourth record.
It's got no gossip. It's just a wildly entertaining and jawdroppingly smart ride through every level of the subject: as an object, as a spell, as a pop phenomenon, as a myth, as sound, as legend, as a money making music machine. It's more about the mythology of the music makers than it is about the band as real people. The idea of the artist folds into the artist as magician, and Led Zepplin is the perfect vehicle.
Erik Davis takes the entire idea of a record review and rather than going gonzo like Lester Bangs, he goes meta. And the way you walk through the matrix may never be the same afterwards.
More Mystical BS Than Music.......2005-08-02
Mr. Davis is clearly a fan of rock music and Led Zeppelin in particular. But I feel the editors of this series have again let readers down by choosing him to write this book. I've found the most interesting books in this series to be written by music journalists or rock musicians -- the one's written by academics, musical or otherwise tend to leave something to be desired.
Mr. Davis has a detailed knowledge of the occult (his area of expertise) and even a casual Zep fan will know that Jimmy Page has a strong affinity for Alistair Crowley and the occult.
But framing this album, almost completely in the terms of a mystical journey is too give in too much to the fabricated aura of mystery surrounding the band and to ignore the powerful music and revolutionary production.
Plus, there is almost no new material here -- it comes off as a social science student writing an essay for a musicology elective term paper. Well written enough, but ultimately brining little new info to the table.
Finally, I wish writers in this series would spend more time on the album at hand and less time giving us an intro of the importance of the LP and the evolution of recorded music -- that's a different book you didn't sign up to write.

Not the best..........2006-07-25
I have been playing guitar for a couple of years, but would not consider myself an expert. What I would consider myself highly advanced on, though, is Led Zeppelin. I am beyond a fan and listen to them everyday, and if anything, I do know their music. This book does not know very much.
There are a small, select number of songs I find helpful and accurate, and there are only two or three ("Celebration Day" and maybe "The Rain Song") that I consider COMPLETE. It does indeed contain every song from Led Zeppelin I-V, transcribed with chords and vocals, but is often incorrect. The tuning for "That's the Way" is wrong. The tablature for "Over the Hills and Far Away" is entirely wrong, and does not provide rhythm chords or a solo for that particular song. "When the Levee breaks" is the MOST ATROCIOUS of them all, giving you only 4 or so chords, that, supposedly, the song contains. "Gallows Pole" is poor in the same way... and "Since I've been Loving You" has only 3 or so chords...VERY BAD...and NO SOLO...isn't that the quintessence of the song anyway?? EACH and every song is INCOMPLETE.
In addition, it seems that songs that are not so "complex" such as "Tangerine" and "Celebration Day" are the only songs with a complete solo. "Stairway to Heaven" does not have a solo transcribed, nor does any other song for that matter (except those two).
Over all, the book is fair, but if you really want to learn the song inside and out, you will be disappointed. If you have been playing guitar for a while, you can figure out anything that is already in this book. For beginners, it's all right for the basics of each song, but it quickly becomes obsolete when you become a better player. I would not recommend this product.
Remember, the three major things missing are:
1)rhythm chords (that should be there)
2)bridges and such
3)AND SOLOS!
This book is perhaps reliable for lyrics to the songs, but the spoken lyrics in "How Many More Times" are missing. I give it three stars because it is good for beginners.
Your money is better spent burned!!.......2005-01-21
Is this author serious!? I think someone accidently printed the rough draft. Either that or the transcriber needs to sober up and try again. Buy this book only if you've never heard a single Led Zeppelin song.
Led Zeppelin 95% Incomplete.......2003-10-08
Don't buy this book. It's a ripoff and shouldn't be in print. The guitar tablature consists of the very basic rythm of the songs with nothing else. In most songs, the rythm is even incomplete. There's no lead at all. Pay the extra 38 bucks and get the I-V box set. You'll be glad you did. The saying "Don't judge a book by it's cover" definitely applies to this one.
Piano/Vocal edition (white cover) is good...for what it is.......2003-08-22
There are several different editions of "Led Zeppelin Complete". I own the one with the white cover and blue clouds, which is basically a "piano/vocal" edition, so that's the version that I'm reviewing here. I bought it back in '89 when there seemed to be no other Led Zeppelin music books in the stores. The book covers all the songs from the first 5 albums, minus the cover tunes (Lemon Song, You Shook Me, Bring It On Home, I Can't Quit You Baby). Hardly "complete", but a lot.
All piano/vocal books of rock bands are essentially what are known as "fake books": they show the vocal melody, the chord progressions, and most of the music transcribed for piano, with the bass staff usually following what the bass guitar is doing, and the treble staff usually following what the guitar is doing. Little fills and solos are invariably left out. So for what it is -- a general transcription book -- the book does its job.
I would NOT recommend this book if you're a guitarist or bass player looking for transcribed parts. Again, this is essentally a fake book for piano. I'm sure there are other Led Zeppelin books better suited to your needs. Not to say that the book is _useless_ to guitarists. Under the chord names of each song are those handy guitar chord diagrams (the ones that look like a little grid, with dots for the figer positions). And on songs where Jimmy Page used alternate tunings, these exact tunings are described, with the chord diagrams redrawn appropriately.
The book has other information, but it's laid out for only certain tracks and in strange ways. There are some notes from band members on how they play certain parts. But this is only for a song or two. The entire lead guitar part to "Since I've Been Loving You" is transcribed, but in a strange version of tablature (written as a series of fractions, where the top number is the fret and the bottom number indicates which string -- very weird!) The Houses of the Holy album is mistitled "Led Zeppelin V". The songs are grouped by album, but the order within each group doesn't match the order as heard on the album nor even alphabetical order. Fortunately there's the table of contents.
I'm a bass player, and the book has been somewhat helpful to me for reference over the years. I also first learned how to play barre chords on a 6-string guitar by looking at the diagrams in this book. Besides currently playing bass in a band that does some Zep covers, I also sing back-up vocals and additionally picked up the mandolin. So I dug up this book from my shelves, and just seeing layout of the chord changes and their transcriptions, along with the lyrics, was exactly what I needed.
Dumbed Down........2003-07-15
Yeah, don't buy this book unless you can't play the guitar. If you have any sort of skill with the instrument you will be bored with the holes they leave in trascribing the songs. There's not a single solo (who wants Led Zeppelin without the guitar solos). In fact, instead of 3 stars I'm giving it 1, because you could find better tabs online for free.

Book Description
No one knew Led Zeppelin like Richard Cole. The band's tour manager for more than a decade, Cole was there when they burst onto the music scene, achieved cult status, cut platinum records, and transformed popular music. Second only to the Beatles in sales for years, Led Zeppelin was rock's premier group. But unlike the boys from Liverpool, the excitement of this band"s music was matched by the fever pitch of their antics on and off the stage....
In hotel rooms and stadiums, in a customized private Boeing 707 jet and country estates, Richard Cole saw it all -- and here he tells it all in this close-up, down-and-dirty, no-holds-barred account that records the highs, the lows, and the occasional in-betweens. This revised edition brings fans up to date on the band members' lives and careers, which may be a little quieter now, but their songs remain the same.
Customer Reviews:
Are you dizzy when you're stoned? Cole is!.......2007-07-13
I understand Richard Cole is supposed to be a first-hand account of Led Zepp's outrageous events, but c'mon. Can he really remember what happened with his girlfriend while he and Jimmy were snorting coke- all those years ago? I can't remember what I ate for breakfast a week ago. Richard Cole tries to entertain us but it's a weak attempt at best, especially the bits where he shares his women with the band. Try the other way around, squire. I gave Stairway a 3 star only because, like it or not, Cole was the inside man to the mania and probably witnessed most of what he wrote about. Give credit where it's due. The rest was probably made up while he was on the loo.
Led Zeppelin Uncensored.......2007-06-08
Excellently written book. After reading this book I understand much more about the reasons behind most of the old Led Zeppelin catalog. I would reccommend this book to anyone that has an interest in this band or rock music in general.
Enjoyable but flawed.......2006-12-13
I've had this book for several years but hasn't grabbed me by the balls as most other music-related books I own. I'm not saying it's awful but certainly no masterpiece. Reading it one wonders if the rowdy Cole kept a diary or something, quite odd since he was normally high a lot of the time, like most of those around him. I can see why his former bosses fell out with him after this book was put out.
There are some big mistakes in the book, one of the most obvious saying that Jimmy was the man behind the glossy In Through The Outdoor, when in fact it was Jonesy and Percy. Other errors include quotting Jimmy as the lyricist for tunes like Kashmir, when in fact the last Zep track whose lyric he wrote was Tangerine, and this was only because the song was a leftover from his Yardbirds' days.
However, the book gives a closer insight in the way most of the band members behave, be it exaggerated or not. The ones who come across as the meanest are Jimmy and Bonzo - not that it's surprising, especially in the latter's case. Robert Plant is portrayed as quite prepotent, and while it may be true to a certain extent, there's hardly any doubt that Richard Cole not getting along with him may have also influenced the way Percy is described on the book. The quite one (John Paul Jones) doesn't get a lot of attention, probably cause he avoided most of the band's limelight and reckless behaviour. Pagey comes across as distant and kinky, which is hardly surprising.
The many atrocities the band did, especially in their early tours, get plenty of ink and I certainly could have done without it. Not that it outrages me though. One thing that struck me is the events leading to Cole's arrest in Italy, apparently due to the police having mistook him for a guy responsible of a terrorist attack down there. Was this true or not?
In any music-related book is always interesting to see photos of the group it's written about, and this one is no exception. The pics are really great though all are in b/w and the quality of some hasn't aged too well, you know.
All in all, an enjoyable reading nonetheless, despite its many flaws.
3/5.
I had a hard time finishing it due to Richard Cole's arrogance.......2006-12-13
Led Zeppelin Uncensored falls far short of any expectations I had. Instead of getting a clear depiction of one of the greatest rock bands to ever walk the earth, I have to muddle through the insanely overly self important arrogance of their freaking ROADIE. I thought this book was supposed to be about Led Zeppelin??? It certainly appears so from the title.
At one point in the middle of the book Richard actually expresses contempt that he was never offered royalties from their record sales. I almost threw the book out the window! I myself have played in what would be considered a very successful band for the last 12 years. Not the likes of Zeppelin but I've made a very comfortable living this way. If our tour manager EVER came at us for royalties we would have kicked him and all of his bags off the bus quicker than you can say "drug induced delusion".
I'd be lying if I said there weren't a couple interesting stories. It's just too bad he's the one telling them.
This book is about Richard Cole and his ego. It's painful to read. It does not come across as a true biography. Maybe I was spoiled by Motley Crue's "The Dirt".
Buy it if you like, heck, I'll even PAY you to take my copy
Another side of the coin........2006-11-17
I think people who do not rate this book very highly may be missing the point. To me it is an incredible story of how someone who was very deeply involved with the most notorious rock band ever, managed to loose his soul and almost his life, only to regain it by getting into recovery and rebuilding his life. Once the Zep broke up, the members still had there celebrity intact, but the author of this book only had what he had left for himself... very little which is sad.
But one can see how easy it would have been to be caught up in the madness and the excess if you were prone to such things. And Richard most obviously was an addict to begin with.I found it touching to read about how he got to the end of his rope, only to bounce back and find his humility again, instead of becoming another rock and roll tragedy. And would you really expect the road manager of Led Zep to be a choir boy? That kind of life would have a massive effect on anyone.I found Coles insights on the band, and there rise and fall to be straight to the point, pulling no punches. He must have had a hell of alot to contend with looking after those guys and ther massive egos. I found this book to be alot more real than Hammer of the Gods. Its a wonder he lived long enough to write it but im gald he did.

Book Description
John Henry "Bonzo" Bonham was the godfather of hard rock drumming - and he remains an idol to legions of Led Zeppelin and heavy metal fans worldwide. Although Bonham had to be courted away from more lucrative offers, he joined the newly formed band in 1968, helping guitarist Jimmy Page and vocalist Robert Plant create such famous songs as "Stairway to Heaven" and "Kashmir" until his sudden death in 1980 at the age of 32. His unmistakable drum patterns are among the most emulated and sampled by today's rock drummers. This book is the first biography focusing on Bonham, providing a detailed track-by-track analysis of his greatest recordings, 45 color photos, and the most detailed and accurate inventory ever of Bonham's drum kits and percussion equipment.

A must for drummers!.......2007-02-01
My 16 year old son is a drummer and this is his favorite book.
LED ZEPPELIN or LUDWIG Fan's you'll love this.......2006-07-29
I've bought this book along with the "John Bonham" book by Mick Bonham (See my review there as well).
I mainly bought these books because i was always impressed by John's inovating and unorthodox style. And i was strongly reminded after hearing the CD "How the West was Won" and seeing the double-DVD simply called "Led Zeppelin", what a great drummer he's been.
This is the story of the Powerhouse behind Zep, The Ludwig endorser, The hammer on the Nail, The Man and the Machine. Here it is everything you always wanted to know about his idea's, his examples (if any), his technique, his drumkits from the green sparkle to the stainles steel and of course the Amber Vistalite, All the albums reviewed by proffesionals from '69 to '79. Descriptions of all his famous tracks or should i say tricks with sticks, his triplets, paradiddles etc. But also a story of how this magical quartet got together and how they made history. Robert Plant's quote says it all:
"Bonzo was the main part of the band. He was the man whatever Page and I wrote basically work, by what he held back, by what he didn't do to tempos. I don't think there's anyone in the world who could replace him".
A Must for Rock (drummer) fans
John Bonham.......2005-12-15
Anyone who is into John Bonham ( and what drummer isn't)should have a copy. Well written account of the man.
Reso Head.......2005-06-24
It's always interesting to find out what makes other drummers tick. This book offers plenty of insight into the legendary Zeppelin drummer, John Bonham; kit configurations, heads, tuning, etc., but not a great deal more than what you could generally surmise if you're a drummer who was influenced early on by Bonham's playing.
He used the Buddy Rich, Big Beat era kit and tuning, with coated Emperor heads, with the reso side tuned a third higher, so when the batter side is struck, the drum produces a nice, fat, resonant big bottom sound. Bonham was one of the first recognizable rock drummers to utilize a smaller kit comprised of very large diameter shells; 14" tom tom, 16" & 18" floors toms, and the trademark oversized 26" bass drum. Later, the "ching ring" on the hats would also become a Bonham signature.
As a youngster, I got my first kit in the early 80s, an orange sparkle Ludwig trap kit, and immediately set about mimicking the sound and feel of drummers who were in late 60s, early 70s bands: Ginger Baker, of Cream, Carmine Appice, of Vanilla Fudge, Paul Whaley, of the notorious LSD-guzzling Blue Cheer, and of course, Bill Ward, of Black Sabbath.
But if you're inspired by those sounds, what drummer wouldn't be influenced by Bonham's "Dazed & Confused" fills, or the bass-heavy stomp of "When The Levee Breaks," or the double and triplet bass notes in "Good Times Bad Times?"
Maybe he wasn't the most versatile drummer(like many good rock drummers, he was self taught), but his style, the sheer heaviness of the wallop he brought to heavy metal, and particularly to his "Moby Dick" solo's, more than made up for it. He's influenced more garage band bashers than anyone could count. His playing reflected a spirituality, and one which he took seriously, comparing misusing and neglecting drums to being just one step below child abuse.
I still play now more than ever, and have a couple of Bonham-sized Ludwig kits, one of which is done in green sparkle, as something of an homage to Bonham, who used that particular kit to record most of the Zeppelin records. "A Thunder of Drums" is a good book for fans or drummers in general. Let the free form flow...
A great book of his life.......2004-10-29
This book is very good. Eventhough it doesnt talk about all the members in led zeppelin it tells about the life of the great john bonham. I started to play drums because of him. The first time i heard kashmir and when the levee breaks i fell in love with the drums riffs. if you get this book you are getting your money worths
