Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

A Great Music History Book.......2007-06-25
This is one of the new breed of general music history texts to hit the market in the past decade. Correcting many of the errors made by the Grout and vastly more readable, this text is filled with unique side bars, charts, lists, photographs, time lines, etc. I keep one copy of this at home and one at the office along with Craig Wright and Bryan Simms' Music in Western Civilization (which is my all-time favorite music history text). If you only want to buy one book (and this is not required for a class), purchase the Wright/Simms. If you don't mind spending the extra money, I would purchase the Bonds and the Wright/Simms as a superb addition to any professional musician's library.
2006 version.......2005-10-09
As a general history intended for the academic market, Bonds's contribution ranks as a formidable contender with K Stolba's and Grout/Palisca's works. Visually appealing with many period paintings, illustrations and tables in color, the book also entertains with well-written text which illuminates the cultural context of developing genres.
Composer profiles and "Focus" features break up the text and provide essential insights. Particularly valuable are the "Primary Evidence" highlights which contain extensive quotes from primary resources. Five appendices include "A Guide to Selected Research Materials in Music History" and the set text for the ordinary of the mass with English translation.
Fourteen CDs and two score anthologies (available seperately) complete the perspective on occidental high art music. Nevertheless, the text stands well alone and would complement the library of anyone interested in western art music history.

There has long been a need for a scholarly, comprehensive, affordable english language text addressing Latin American music. "Music in Latin American Culture Regional Traditions" provides a schoarly look at the diverse musical cultures of Mexico, Central America, South America and the Caribbean. Each chapter is written by an expert in the field who has first hand experiences with the culture they are discussing. The text covers music rituals, instrument manufacturing, improvisation techniques and culural/social history of the topic under discussion. The bibliography/discography at the end of each chapter is extensive. This text is geared towards the undergraduate student and is similar in context to Jeff Todd Titon's "Worlds of Music: An Introduction to the Music of the World's Peoples" by the same publisher. My only criticism of the book that the Cuban and Puerto Rican contributions to Latin American Music are not covered as thoroughly as they deserve. I believe that although each is mentioned in the text that they, too, deserve an entired chapter in the text.....maybe in the next edition. With the exception of this perceived oversight, the "Music in Latin American Culture Regional Traditions" is an excellent book, filling a much needed gap in scholarly writing on Latin American Music and is a wonderful introduction for those seeking to study the musics of Latin America.

Nothing to Get Hung Up About .......2007-09-09
Any book about the Beatles will be enjoyable for me. I can't help but think of their music while I am reading, and that is a good thing. But I did think the philosophical insights, while often on point, were extremely forced. The writers were often forcing Beatles lyrics into their prose as if that would make their philosophical case.
To be honest, much of the philosophy went over my head. I think one would need to be, not just a Beatles junkie (like me) but have been formally trained in philosophy (not like me) to get much out of this book.
If you're looking to read about the Beatles, go to A Day in the Life: The Music and Artistry of the Beatlesby Mark Hertsgaard, which is an astonishing analysis of their work. It's also a far superior book to the recent Beatles biography.
Far more involving insights than the usual dry philosophy tome........2007-02-03
The Beatles made their musical impact partially because they quickly moved from teen love songs to reflecting the questioning and philosophy of their generation: thus The Beatles and Philosophy is an especially significant, important recommendation for both music history collections and high school to college-level philosophy libraries. It uses the insights of some twenty professional philosophers to analyze the ideas and implications of Beatles lyrics, connections these ideas to both traditional and modern forms of philosophical thought, and thus provides students with far more involving insights than the usual dry philosophy tome.

This wonderful book makes me think of the 1965 George Harrison classic, "Think For Yourself." It is a nice blending of Beatle music and the Beatles' career with philosophical concepts ranging from the basic to the esoteric.
Inveterate Beatle fans will undoubtedly enjoy it. It is an interesting look at the Beatles and how philosophy interplays with their impact on culture as well as their music.

Glimpses of Heaven Amidst the Chaos.......2007-03-01
I'd read every book out there about the Dead...or so I thought. Somehow this one passed me by, and I'm glad it did, because because maybe if I read it 8 years ago when it first came out I wouldn't have like it so much. I still listen to the Dead almost daily and sometimes I wonder why, what it is about what they did that I find so profound. Sure, it's about the music; but not totally. The Dead's music operates at so many more levels than simple sound than a collection of instruments and poetry. It emerged from a certain concoction of musical history, personality, drugs, group dynamics, and social context. Brightman looks at and analyzes that context and those forces better than anyone else. To me reading her book gave me a wider perspective, and even greater appreciation, for why I'm so moved when I listen to the Dead. It gave
Definitely a book worth reading, whether you like the Dead's music or not, if you are interested in understanding how people explore the world we live in and somehow find ways to achieve moments of transcendence amidst all the chaos and suffering.
A Pleasant Surprise.......2005-04-06
I got this book as a Christmas gift, and I approached it with kneejerk Deadhead prejudices (fueled by some of the reviews here, I must admit.) I was pleasantly surprised.
One criticism I share: I don't think that Ms. Brightman's activist past and her insights about it are interesting enough to stand alone in the market.
I was intrigued by what she has to say about the spiritual aspects of the Dead experience. It seems to me that she understands and respects certain facets of the experience that most outsiders don't. It is equally clear that she doesn't really "get it."
A Unique Angle on an American Phenomenon.......2003-10-08
Carol Brightman, sister of GD lighting designer Candace Brightman and veteran activist, has an interesting take on the Grateful Dead. Her book is an outsider's look in, particularly from the point of view of a antiwar activist who cut sugarcane for Castro and travelled to Vietnamese hamlets. Now she asks: how come this freakin' band is the only thing left from the 1960s?
Dennis McNally's biography of the Dead is still the first book anybody interested should read (well, after Wolfe, Kerouac, Kesey, and David Gans' Conversations with the Dead), but Brightman has an interesting angle. Her take on the reasons for the Dead's staying power is evenhanded and convincing, and her criticism of the Dead has haven for people disillusioned with politics is only fair. It almost doesn't matter that she could have used some help with structure--the organization is a mess, jumping from the 60s to the 90s, from Berkeley to Europe 72, from history lessons in the Weatherman to sharp-eyed analysis of Hunter lyrics. You never know what you'll find when you turn the page.
Or maybe with a book called Sweet Chaos, that's intentional.

Looking for a history of the Dead? Go elsewhere! As other reviewers have commented, this book is self-indulgent, and spends too much time on the politics of the Sixties (as if that was the only decade during which the Dead were performing and recording!), despite tha author's repeated statements that the band was apolitical.
Aside from the above, this book is also a poor choice because it leaves out so much. There is no mention on the deaths of Pigpen and other deceased members of the group. TC gets very little coverage, as did the albums on which he played. "Europe 72" is ignored, as are many of the post-Sixties albums. I could go on and on...
Save your money, friends.

This book has gotten hammered because it has a lot of autobiography and a lot of political and sociological content.
Listen to most people talk about the Dead, and it's autobiographical, it's about the experience and less about the music. I'm not faulting Brightman for writing about it in that context.
Also, if you are a boomer deadhead, then marches on Washington or the draft as political happenings during the time you began listening, or the Dead's playing on your college campus and your conscious effort to adopt hedonism instead of politics may be describing your trip. This book touches on your life and how the Dead fit into it.
It's NOT a biography of dead members, either.
It's for deadheads, for sure. Ones who had or have other interests outside the minutiae of each song in each performance.
But if your only interest is classifying that really awesome bass line from Philly, or what the best Scarlet Begonias was in 1977, then look elsewhere, the Compediums or Wybenga's book. (I like the latter as well, for different reasons.) If you really want to know all the gory details behind the trip, then Scully or McNally are your guys.

Stupid and boring, sidney, boring.......2006-12-31
The dust jacket of this book would have you believing it's a retrospective of all the great bands of the punk rebellion, but so many greats are overlooked or just not mentioned, even if one were content to look at the UK only, PLUS the massive pics make it look more like an ode to the Pistols PR machine than anything else. Great as a coffee table book, but low on substance and accuracy. Don't leave it out when your mom comes to visit, however, as the big black and white dildo photo might just send her over the edge...precisely the kind of sensationalist schlock that made punk so misunderstood in the first place. Are we certain Malcom McLaren didn't write this trite? Really, you could spend your money on a lot better, and you'd probably have a better chance at staying awake, too!

Mostly photos and quotations, many of the quotations apparently from interviews the authors conducted with insiders. Seems okay being such a large book given that the alternative would have been several volumes and with smaller photos.
A Sex-Pistols-centric, British view of Punk, but with a good opening on Warhol, the Velvet Undergound, the New York Dolls, Ramones and other U.S. influences. By stopping with 1979, however, such American bands as the Plasmatics, the Circle Jerks and Black Flag aren't covered.
Finding out what happened to Sid Vicious's remains may be the best value from this book for me.
What ever happened to rock n' roll, punk or otherwise? One of the best things about this book is that it can bring you to that time. It's sad that Coldplay passes as good music nowadays. However remarkable the fashion and the events, 70's Punk was basically lots of great music. Who knew what a vacuum would follow it?

If youre looking for punk history, well, you know punk was born in different parts of the world at the same time, so its not very accurate,in how it really emerged. Anyhow, you get lots of history telling from the most important punk era 1976 - 1979, and some background in the bands that influenced punk bands (1960's The velvet underground - the stooges and MC5 )such as the Ramones, Sex Pistols and more. A great collection of interviews actually, and the pictures, oh the pictures are great!. This book its huge! its so big you wont be able to hold it in your hands and try to read it. The photos are worth the price alone, i recommend this one.

There were some good things here. Great pictures and some interesting historical information I wasn't previously aware of. However, the amount of attention given to the Ramones/Sex Pistols is way over the top. I was expecting a comprehensive review of the life and times of Punk in the mid-late 70's. In the end what I got was a biography of 2 bands and Malcom McLaren with fairly brief (comparitavely) impersonal descriptions of other icons of the time. Additionally the collaborators of this book leave the reader the impression that there were only 2 places in the world (New York and London) that were producing anything worth writing about.
Worth the buy? Yes I would purchase it again. Disappointing? Again Yes. It could have been so much more.
Punk's Dead - Live With It!.......2004-05-28
Most of us whose salvation and saving grace in the late 1970's came in the form of punk rock never thought it would come to this: a coffee table-style book on the genre so large it almost requires a truss to pick up and read. Exploding with stark black-and-white photos, the authors rightfully trace punk's origins back to the Stooges/MC5/Velvet Underground unholy triumvirate and primarily use quotes from musicians, hangers-on, and the fans to tell the story of the music so many thought would change if not the world, then at least the industry. Although an integral part of the whole sordid saga, it would have been nice if the authors had sacrificed some of the space devoted to The Sex Pistols and the Sodom and Gomorrah of punk (New York and London) and examined the scenes in Australia and elsewhere. Nonetheless, despite the small quibble, this is a glorious addition to the library of any music lover, punk or otherwise, and another testimonial to why music in the 70's casts such a huge shadow over everything that's come along since.
