Finding Creative Colleges/Conservatories.......2007-07-05
This reference book helps in choosing creative type colleges or conservatories by providing the facts we need to know before we choose the school, such as how many apply/audition and how many are chosen each year. It lists the department activities, degree concentrations, number of full time faculty, prices, enrollment, scholarships, entry requirements, and prominent alumni.
While certain colleges have been chosen to have in-depth profiles as described above, most creative schools have been listed by state under their specialty(acting, artist, dancing, music, writing) without in- depth profile for you to further investigate on your own. The biggest down fall of the book is that not enough colleges have been chosen for in-depth profiles on their creative departments.
This book also provides examples of creativer resumes and audition / portfolio requirements.
So the book is a starting ground for creative school investigation but must be used in conjunction with other information sources and books that outline creative schools. Use this in conjuction with Peterson's College Guide for Performing Arts Majors.
I could have used this.......2006-01-22
I only wish this book was around when I was researching colleges in NY! It's very comprehensive, simple to understand for any high school senior, and all of the information is up to date. Most other books hardly touch on the creative student- this book specializes in it. I recommended it to all the high schools in my area, and I'm pleased to say that they all love this book!
Excellent Book.......2005-11-05
"Creative Colleges is very informative and it would have been so helpful to my daughter as a high school senior (she is now in college). It is much better to know about the things that are in this book well in advance. It is very helpful for parents and students starting the research. Also, there is very little information out there like this."
a great resource for creative students.......2005-10-23
As if being a student in the college search and application process is not challenging enough, student actors, artists, dancers, and musicians are presented with additional and different sets of options and challenges. Creative Colleges: A Guide for Student Actors, Artists, Dancers, Musicians and Writers by Elaina Loveland is a great resource for creative students, the parents of creative students, and the counselors who work with creative students.
The information in Creative Colleges is clear, practical, well researched, and well presented. Students will get help with decision-making and advice on applications, auditions, portfolios, essays, resumes, and other aspects of the process. They will also get a feel of what different colleges are like.
Much of the tips and advice is quoted directly from admissions professionals, professors at creative colleges, and from creative students who went through the college search and admission process.
The author is a former editor of the Journal of College Admission. In Creative Colleges, she combines that experience with her background as a writing student and writer and her experiences as a dance student and dancer. The author's experience and empathy for and understanding of the creative student are evident throughout the book.
Creative Colleges is a book that can be a great help every to every high school junior and senior who wants to pursue acting, art, dance, music, and writing at the college level.

Book Description
This unique, respected book brings together the diverse modeling efforts of two decades of research in the Smithsonian Marine Systems Laboratory.
Dynamic Aquaria, Second Edition integrates the fields of ecology and aquarium science to give readers a better understanding of simulated ecosystem function and ecological food webs. In a new larger format, the Second Edition presents the limitations imposed upon these webs by their compression into micro- and mesocosms. The book demonstrates mainstream ecological research alongside practical issues of aquaria construction, and successfully presents essential aspects of ecological systems in an accessible fashion. It describes the introduction and testing of numerous new techniques for simulating the functional and biodiversity of ecosystems in relatively small dimension. The Second Edition includes new advancements in the field and two new chapters on suspended particulates (inorganic and organic) and biomineralization. Approximately one-third of the photographs are entirely new.
Key Features
* Incorporates new information regarding simulated ecosystem function

* Provides a guide to the culture and display of organisms in their rightful milieu, the ecosystem
Customer Reviews:
Aquarium Ecosystems.......1999-05-20
While best known for describing the use of turf algae as a natural absorber of aquarium pollutants, the book 'Dynamic Aquaria' shines as a plea for the re-evaluation of how we appreciate aquarium systems and their micro-ecologies. Rather than the display of just a few select specimens, it proposes more emphasis on (and therefore replication of) the fascinating interactions between species and environment. It does a splendid job of discussing the difficulties in scaling down nature's beauty to fit an aquarium's limited volume.
excellent groundbreaking work on natural aquariums.......1998-03-29
This book explores aquarium systems as models of natural eco systems. Adey and Loveland's technique relies on algae scrubbers to reduce nitrate levels in the tank. By removing new growth of algae, one can avoid frequent water changes. The book includes extensive discussion of important aspects of marine eco systems, such as wave motion, light, and food chains, to name just a few.
The book is more about the science of building marine microcosms than a cookbook for building home marine aquariums.

Making Beautiful Music .......2007-03-23
Jai Uttal has done it again. What an amazing and beautiful blend of peaceful sounds and harmonies. Definitely more on the tranquil side, but one of my absolute favorites. I could listen to the first song on the CD all day. Great chill music or end of active yoga class.
State of Bliss!.......2006-08-17
Searching for other Jai Uttal music I stumbled upon this CD and after sampling just two of the tracks I quickly purchased it. I can say after recieving it I was not disappointed! The layers of harmony, space, and sound combine to leave the listener searching within and in a state of reconnected peace. All music should be this good. Track #5 bija mantras, if listened to while watching the rising sun in the morning will give you a feeling of understanding, awe, and peace. All the tracks leave me speechless and are great for meditation, yoga, relaxation, massage and reconnecting the soul to the divine. A true must have CD.
Loveland is the place to be.......2006-07-16
I am admittedly a huge fan of Jai Uttal and Ben Leinbach - I have quite a few of their cd's and enjoy using them in yoga classes or when I want to chill out. So, of course, I was excited with this new offering.
It did not disappoint - this inviting collection of songs is soothing to the spirit and uplifting for the soul. Gentle, lilting chants coupled with lush, ambient slow-trance grooves provides a welcome escape from everyday life. "Gopala Lullaby" and "Bija Mantras" were my two favorites on the cd - the first song showcases Uttal's beautiful voice and the second song is almost hypnotic - making it one of my new favorites for meditation. I have enjoyed using this CD in my yoga classes and am sure it will be one of the classic favorites for myself and many other fans of this duo's work. Simply divine!

A Practitioner's Guide to Software Test Design
ASIN: 1584503467 |
Book Description
Reliability and continuous availability have become crucial for computer software in the information economy. Well-publicized failures from both industry and government have underscored the need for mission-critical software to be thoroughly tested before being released into the marketplace. When it comes to industrial-strength reliability, no computer system is more renowned than the mainframe. But for years the actual approaches used to test mainframe software have been kept under wraps. What techniques are used? How do the teams in mainframe development labs test their systems to ensure they will deliver such extreme levels of robustness? How can these lessons be applied to other software projects? Software Testing Techniques: Finding the Defects that Matter answers these questions and provides practical testing techniques for achieving robust reliability with any large-scale software project. Written in a friendly, accessible style, the book highlights areas such as devising attacks to validate data integrity, wreaking havoc to ensure recoverability, exploiting virtualized environments to improve test efficiency, the tug of war between finding defects and meeting schedules, and approaches for emulating customer environments to find the most critical defects. Focusing on real-life techniques illustrated through examples and case studies gleaned from the authors' experiences with large server testing and operation, software engineers will discover tried and true techniques that are used for testing multimillion-dollar commercial software products.
Customer Reviews:
Every software tester should read this book!.......2005-09-08
This book is a very comprehensive guide to software testing on the mainframe. It would be beneficial for both experienced testers and those new to the testing profession. The authors have done a great job of describing the tasks facing software testers, and the unique (and important) role that the test process plays in delivering world-class software. The book is very readable--it covers a lot of important information in a straightforward manner. You can't test quality into a software product, and you can never find EVERY bug. This book helps place the focus on what's really important--finding the defects that matter!
"Software Testing Techniques" could very well be the modern day companion to Kaner, Falk, and Ngyuen's "Testing Computer Softwar.......2005-08-02

Keywords: Software Development
StickyMinds.com Review: by Martin FensomeBack to Top
The title of this volume is definitely apt. This book's focus is on the major areas and challenges one faces when finding the defects that matter most to the company and especially to the users of the software.
The authors begin with a review of the issues surrounding testing and testers. Then the focus shifts into discussions on the software and its environments, as well as how this exponentially increases the number of variables to be considered when planning and executing tests. After discussing the differences between development and testing and how to build good relationships with our "coding cousins," the book presents ideas and suggestions for test preparation. Some very specific ideas are given on how to learn the utmost about the software and how teams of testers can work together to deal more effectively and speedily with the complexities presented by software and environments of the 21st Century.
The early parts just whet your appetite for more, and the book delivers. Later sections cover such topics as test planning, recoverability testing, test preparation, automation, data corruption testing, tools, test execution, test management, and beta tests. The authors' knowledge of testing is extensive, albeit from a mainframe environment, which shows clearly in the examples they detail.
The book has something for almost everyone. Testers, test managers, and leads--as well as developers--can gain from reading this book. The writing style is very down to earth, never preachy or repetitive. I feel that the content is well covered. Though at over three hundred pages, it's not a "quick read," it is a rewarding and worthwhile one. Unlike some books on testing that focus more on process, this book really targets the testers in the trenches.
Reading the table of contents, you may be tempted to think this book is filled with rehashed information. It's not. Having read many articles and books on testing, I believe this is one of the best.
"Software Testing Techniques" could very well be the modern day companion to Kaner, Falk, and Ngyuen's "Testing Computer Software." The Kaner classic shows its age, but still focuses on the basic nuts and bolts of finding and reporting issues. The author discusses some of the modern complexities and how to overcome them through planning, organization, logic, and hardware/software. I highly recommend "Software Testing Techniques" to anyone interested in finding the defects that matter when testing software.
A Must Read.......2004-11-18
This Book is a must read! Loveland, Shannon, Miller and Prewitt know what they're talking about. This book would make a great stocking stuffer for all of your software engineer friends!

Good account of the evangelical faith in antebellum South.......2005-03-23
Loveland delivers a fairly complete picture of evangelical's effect on southern society. Drawing from the journals and sermons of southern evangelical ministers, Loveland explores firsthand how regenrated preachers felt about politics, society and the cause of Christ throughout the South.
She recounts how the evangelical sermon was a crossroads of politics, society and religion, as ministers often addressed the burning questions of the day from the pulpit. She describes the missionary activity so characteristic of northern evangelists undertaken by their southern counterparts. She shows how southern preachers were involved in a host of benevolent projects, from reforming sailors to caring for the poor. She relates how many southern evangelicals believed in instructing and converting slaves to Christianity but that they differed from their northern contemporaries in that they also upheld and defened slavery.
Overall, one of the best books on the complex and fascinating topic of antebellum southern evangelicalism.
