Best trip in the world!.......2005-08-18
This book is a must have if you are planning a trip to the library or a bookstore with a child. It will definitely get your children excited about books and all the wonderful adventures that they contain.
On route to a special destination with Grandpa, Jack is asked to guess where they are going. Grandpa's clues as to their ultimate destination have Jack guessing that their destination will be a zoo, the jungle, a park, an aquarium, a museum, a movie or a bakery. When they finally reach their destination, however, it turns out that they can visit all these places with a trip to the library.
The illustrations are colorful & cute, and the narrative will certainly keep your child guessing about where Jack and his Grandpa are headed. I love that the books portrayed in the end are classic children's titles that can be found on the shelves of the library.

Book Description
You've graduated from college. Now what?
It's a question that everyone in your position has to answer. But as soon as you ask it, that one question can lead to countless others: Who am I? Where am I going? What are my passions in life? Am I making the right decisions? Why is it so difficult to meet people? Will I ever find a job that I love? Will I ever truly be happy? And once you think you've found the answers, you still have to dosomething.
Your academic education has prepared you for practical tasks like finding a job or a place to live, but many of the challenges you'll face after college require a different set of skills that are psychological in nature. This book can help you develop these skills by putting the most cutting-edge psychological research at your fingertips to help you overcome the obstacles you'll face throughout this trying and exciting time in your life.
The Turbulent Twenties Survival Guide is your roadmap to: · Developing the independence and self-reliance to accomplish your goals · Coping with uncertainty, doubt, and postcollege depression · Managing today's overwhelming number of choices · Cultivating the emotional intelligence to make it in today's economy · Exploring ways to build a supportive community of friends and loved ones
Book Description
Being happy doesn't have to be hard, says prominent personal coach Laura Berman Fortgang. We each possess an internal compass that expresses our individual wisdom and points to the things that would most fulfill us. Personal and professional satisfaction, Fortgang believes, comes from tapping into this wisdom.
In Living Your Best Life, she offers ten tried-and-true strategies that help us to access our own inner knowledge to achieve what she calls a "best life"-a life that awaits all of us, in which gains come more easily because we've learned to honor our true desires and work with our individual talents rather than exhausting our energy on a traditional model of achievement. Her techniques focus on asking ourselves what we really want instead of frenetically trying to "have it all." We learn to ask questions that move us forward, not backward, to discover our own unique "lucrative purpose," and to design a "magnet" life plan that draws to us the more rewarding existence we deserve.

THIS WOMAN IS DOING A GREAT JOB!!!!!.......2007-01-13
I read this book at a time when I didn't know if I was coming or going! Although it didn't get me the ideal job, help me lose 30 pounds in 3 weeks or buy real estate no-money-down, it did help get me in touch with an old friend : my own inner voice!!!
Not particularly realistic or helpful.......2006-02-10
According to the author everyone has a built-in "blueprint for life." Her job and the reader's job is to discover what that is. But the discovery process is decidedly non analytical; trying to understand the past - the why's of this world - is non constructive, if not negative, in this venture. The reader, patient, or client ( the author runs a life coaching business ) must be future oriented, focusing on "wants" and not "shoulds." One should rely upon intuition and feelings far more so than "information." Furthermore, all areas of life are equally open to this approach: career, relationships, etc. Details on a micro level are irrelevant or get in the way.
Like virtually every so-called "self-help" book, the author maintains that the person in need of help is the primary obstacle to success. It is up to him or her to make the life-changing transformation, with of course the possible help of a life coach. The author gives the example of deciding on the day on which she was to be admitted to a mental facility, after five years of depression and therapy, to suddenly change her life. Apparently, multi-year depression is some sort of superficial malady that can be cast aside in a heartbeat, if only properly motivated. Also in keeping with the genre, the author admits to no social or economic structures or conditions that can and do present very real obstacles in attaining success in life. Issues like class, vastly unequal resources, or power dynamics apparently do not exist in the author's world. Being down-sized from a thirty year career is just another "opportunity" in life-coach speak, not a devastating blow that can be extremely difficult to overcome for many realistic reasons.
Granted it is possible to think one's situation to death. Analysis can be paralysis. But is success in life merely identifying wants, adopting the right attitudes, and getting out of the way to let it all happen? At one point, the author suggests that the "best life cannot help but find you." For many, life is just a bit more complicated despite efforts made that are least equal to any detailed in her book.
The target audience is not particularly clear. In one example, the author describes a supervisor becoming more effective by asking an employee "what" questions as opposed to "why" questions. That sounds like Mgt 101, not life transformation. In another case, a manager has "negative" guilt over firing an employee. When he realizes that he is helping the firm, apparently that constitutes "living your best life." And then there is the other extreme of the author going from admittance to a hospital to life coach and successful author in a matter of a few years.
The book is just overly simplistic. It makes both unreal, exaggerated claims and does not realistically examine life's complexities and the difficulties in assessing and solving problems. In that regard, it may actually perform a disservice. The book offers mostly life cheerleading, which may be exactly what some are looking for.
Wise questions help you arrive at your own wise answers.......2005-10-15
This book is a different kettle of fish from many other self-help books, and it deserves a read.
A lot of books shame you about current life choices (you're dependent; lazy; immature; in denial; codependent; not actualized, etc.) and lecture you about how you must change in order to FULFILL your DESTINY*! "...You're right," you might say, sighing. "So if I should do something else instead, why don't I just DO it?"
Fortgang says you need reinforcement and continuity to bridge the change. Her strongest suite is helping you recognize how your life purpose is already being enacted, to understand how your essential nature already infuses your life, and build from there. For example: My nature is that of an observer and analyst (duh). My purpose is not To Be A [drum roll] """WRITER""", but to communicate information effectively through my strongest means--which happens to be writing.
The cool thing about Fortgang is that she doesn't lecture you; she leads you to teach yourself and create the kind of continuity that works for you.
*Anyone else notice irony in that message?
Living your life is a discovery.......2005-03-20
Laura Berman Fortgang derives both wise women brilliance through intellect blended with intution to uncover your true life. Fortgang's extensive excercises combines and connect head with heart to emerge from our own cocoon.
Worked for me!!!!!!!!.......2004-10-29
This book walked me through the process of completely transforming my life. It is full of useful exercises that really really work. If you're unhappy with your life, don't run blindly to the next thing. Take the time, do the work, and figure out what it is your really desire, in order to find true happiness. I went from a point in my life where I was unhappy with my career, relationship, home, location, and general quality of life. Over the process of a year and a half, I now have my dream job in an incredibly beautiful location along with wonderful home, relationship, and lifestyle. If you believe you can do it and that you deserve nothing but the best, you CAN make it happen. So do it!

(RAW Rating: 4.5) - Making the Most of Life.......2007-05-02
LIVING THE MAXIMIZED LIFE is a book meant to inspire and it accomplishes this goal by outlining very human issues about life. Dr. Hilliard begins by sharing his belief that God wants each of us to live happy, prosperous lives. He speaks on the tendency Christians often have to sit around waiting for God to perform a transformation in their lives without taking steps to make changes themselves, then highlights how God wants us to take an active role in our successes. From the basics, like the importance of being organized, using to do lists, researching, and planning, to more difficult issues like the power of our thoughts, maximizing our failures, and pushing ahead despite criticism from others, Dr. Hilliard presents a virtual toolbox that will assist readers in their journey to live life to the fullest.
Dr. Hilliard has put together a well-organized book full of ideas and tools that can make life easier and more pleasant. He provides scriptural support for most of the main ideas and carefully laces the life experiences of others, including himself, throughout. The life examples not only help illustrate his points, but they also inspire. The conversational tone of Dr. Hilliard's writing makes LIVING THE MAXIMIZED LIFE enjoyable and truly a pleasure to read.

A Lucky Man.......2006-01-14
Columbus was a lucky man (blessed, he would say). He had to be. Who else could have so much go so wrong and still become famous for the one big thing he did by mistake: discover America...if he did that. Anyway, he had a lot of adventure (or misadventure), and Jean Fritz tells about it and him--not in the traditionally reverent way, but with a humorous and matter-of-fact approach.
"Where Are You Going, Heinrich Himmler?".......2003-09-26
It's hard to imagine something lower or more morally contemptible than books of this kind. Columbus was guilty of the genocide of eight million Native people. Imagine "Where Are You Going Heinrich Himmler?" or "Where Are You Going Adolf Eichmann?" for comparison. His vaunted "discovery" was no such thing. Native people were already there. Polynesians, Inuit, Phoenicians, and Africans had already made the same voyage, and unlike old Chris did not slaughter millions once they got here.
For very young children, I would simply mention that Columbus was a very cruel man and leave it at that. It is simply impossible to tell them the truth at such a young age without giving them nightmares. But for heaven's sake, DONT whitewash or glorify a butcher like Columbus. Once they are in their teens, tell you children the TRUTH with such wonderful books as Loewen's Lies My Teacher Told Me or Takaki's A Different Mirror. Our kids deserve truth, not lies, in order for them to better deal with the legacy of genocide.
A Fun Book to Stimulate Interest in History.......2002-01-31
This is a fun book that should help your youngster develop an interest in American History. It is easy to read an has great illustratiions. You will not be disappointed with this purchase. Look for others by the same author.
Very informative with interesting illustrations.......1998-01-24
Nicely done. Jean Fritz relates to children of "all ages". A necessary compliment alongside the more encyclopedic versions.
Book Description

Armed with this manual, compiled over the last 2,000 years, you'll be able to navigate the Why's, How's, and Who's of your new life as Pontifex Maximus. What is your official job title? Why do you need to choose a papal name? Who does your laundry? While the church has long maintained an aura of complete secrecy to outsiders, the facts, figures, and historical anecdotes found here give the crucial information you'll need to fulfill your papal duties. Detailed diagrams reveal significant locations within the Vatican where to buy gas, where to mail a letter, St. Martha's House while helpful illustrations demonstrate how to perform the papal wave, the uniform of the Swiss Guards, and how to tell the difference between a mitre and a stole. All this plus a Latin primer, tips on greeting world leaders, and a list of job benefits makes for an indispensable guide to performing the role of Successor to the Prince of the Apostles.

A humorous approach to informing the reader of everything to do with being the Pope.......2006-04-07
How To Be Pope: What To Do And Where To Go Once You're In The Vatican by Piers Marchant is a humorous approach to informing the reader of everything to do with being the Pope, and knowing the Vatican City. As a highly informative and instructional reference for the holy city and positioning, How To Be Pope is well written to cover every imaginable detail of being elected Pope, including the answers to questions like: who does my laundry?; can I keep a pet?; how do I make phone calls?; which hat do I wear when?; do I have a special wave? and many more interesting and fun facts. How To Be Pope is very highly recommended to all visitors of the Vatican City, as well as to those expecting to become elected as the next Pope.
This was a great conversation piece with my Catholic friends. We laughed and laughed........2006-02-25
Great fun, especially if you are Catholic. I enjoyed it.
A fun, quick read.......2006-02-16
Being a Catholic who is highly sensitive to material that is offensive, this book passed with flying colors. Actually, anyone would enjoy reading it. It has such a great premise, and totally delivers. I particularly got a kick out of reading that the Vatican City ATM machines are the only ones in the world whose primary language is Latin.
Respectful but Very Fun.......2006-02-13
What a fun little book this is! I came across it by accident, read it from cover to cover in less than an hour, and couldn't have had a more enjoyable time.
The conceit of the book is that the reader has just been elected pope. What are the essentials that a new pope with no background would have to know about being pope and living in Vatican City? Mr. Marchant has gathered together the basics (clothes, buildings of the Vatican, staff, rituals, duties, travel, recreation and much more) and outlined them in a pleasant, easy-to-read fashion.
As a Catholic, I was particular pleased that the book is completely factual and unoffensive. Unless you are bothered by the idea of imaging yourself as pope, there is nothing here but history, geography and a light touch. Nothing to get angry about. So read it and enjoy!
Absolutely Bloody Brilliant!.......2005-11-09
Right. Well, yes, I'm biased, but I found it a bloody good read -- many facts and details about Popes -- as well as perfectly sound advice for incoming popes, all written in pithy little nuggets of information. Learn about the VC and all of its peculiar charms, become acquainted with the daily duties and responsibilities of the office, find out (extremely) hard-to-find details about the Pope's day-to-day living. Who does his laundry? What does he eat for breakfast? Who makes the Popemobile? And what's the deal with exorcisms, anyway? I don't need to tell you this would make a perfect gift this holiday season do I? I do? Well, then, there you are. Enjoy!

"My wink is binding," Bernie Brillstein writes in the middle part of his memoir of a career in showbiz. At this point the movie-star manager has already admitted that he wanted power and prestige as soon as he started in the William Morris agency mailroom. And that he chased after a Don Corleone-ish kind of respect afterward. But even when he became a clout-carrying manager and near-mogul he kept his people-first credo. You suspect he loves it too for the way it echoes the Borscht Belt, since that's the kind of verbal energy he draws on throughout this anecdote-crammed autobiography. He calls himself "show," but in four decades he had to be "business" too, tough enough to tell clients, as he says he did, when to start their career over from scratch. The book begins with a graphically honest memory of his visit to the proctologist with his family when he was 24--something he guffaws off, but it's probably not far from the sort of reality check he regularly gave clients like Jim Henson, Norm Crosby, Lorne Michaels, John Belushi, and Brad Pitt. He cops to a gambling addiction, a love of "high class call girls," and to the way he stole from Laugh-Into invent Hee Haw. But he also brokered Lorne Michael's big break with SNL, produced Dangerous Liaisons, and eventually got News Radio and The Sopranos on the air. He candidly assesses professional pains too, including Michael Ovitz's pathology, Garry Shandling's riddling neuroses, and the loss of Belushi and Henson. "I care," he writes finally, "because that's who I am." It's easy to smile at that, but by the end of the book it's also easy to believe he means it. --Lyall Bush

Customer Reviews:
REALLY JUST A SALESMAN, AFTER ALL THE FUSS!!.......2001-03-28
Because we're so star-struck in America, we tend to be overly impressed with ShowBiz and the people who inhabit that world. But as charming, determined and persistent a personality Mr. Brillstein may be, he's essentially just a salesman - NOT the creator, but a "dealmaker" of the ShowBiz Old School - and after almost 400 pages, I found he'd worn thin his welcome! However dramatic it may have been FOR HIM to accompany John Belushi's body back East, or "duke it out" with the Big Boys in corporate takeovers while at Lorimar, the emotions are thinly drawn and shallow in this book. Brillstein made me less than intrigued with his machinations, unimpressed by his self-aggrandizing spin on events and ultimately unsympathetic to his life challenges. (His obvious misogyny doesn't help, either - he has no use for women outside of the sack, it appears.) Here's another absurdly fortunate, rich powerful older man feeling sorry for himself because time changes everything? I'd have hoped he'd have learned to adjust better to the slings and arrows of life by the time he got to his 60s and 70s!
This book was distressing to me because I REALLY WANTED to LIKE the guy - but I found I couldn't. He's kinda ordinary, and once you remove the "famous" names and large amounts of money, his anecdotes are kinda ordinary! He's not terribly brilliant, sage or extraordinary in any other way than being sublimely LUCKY! I gave the book 3 stars, because it's certainly not dreck, but for inspiration or insight, I'd advise looking elsewhere!
Brillstein is as a big a star as those he represents.......2001-03-07
I'm not sure what drove me to buy the Brillstein book. I had heard of him of years, but wasn't sure that a managers tale was all that interesting. Oh, but is! This book is filled with humor, honesty, and and ego. Bernie seems like a terrific guy and he tells fantastic stories. Some are filled with love: Belushi, Radner, etc. Others venom (and these are the most fun, he pulls no punches): Ovitz, Shandling (more would have better on this), etc. You learn about the inside story of Hee Haw, The Muppets, SNL, and Lorimar. My favorite stuff was about Jim Henson, rarely have I seen so much great stuff written about one of my heroes.
While this may not be a roast, I raise my glass to Big Bernie and the wonderful life he has led. Thanks for sharing.
Unexpectedly Touching.......2000-12-04
I found myself unexpectedly touched by this autobiography. Having read it, I consider Bernie Brillstein a friend. With no self-praise, Brillstein shows himself to be a man of decency, of compassion, of empathy. He began in his profession as an agent at William Morris, dreaming of representing mid-Century comics such as Jackie Gleason and Jackie Gale. When he left William Morris, he became a personal manager, starting the careers of dozens of entertainers who have become household names. The stories Bernie has to tell! He survived--there's no other word--until the end of the century, representing Jim Henson, Lorne Michaels, Gilda Radner, John Belushi, Dan Ackroyd and, as the saying goes, a cast of thousands along the way. He created HEE HAW and greenlighted THE SOPRANOS, headed a movie studio for a short time, got fired, picked himself up and started again. His very life has been the personification of the entertainment business; there are few who exceeded his success. And he is the one having the last laugh: He's still here! But along with the chronological report of his professional experience, what he was thinking, how he pulled it off, there is this man, this basically sweet and decent man, and that's what shines through his book. I enjoyed reading about Bernie's fascinating life.
Passably interesting but..........2000-10-29
A passably interesting look into life of an "old school" agent/manager with some real insights into his client's lives and the behind-the-scenes machinations of Hollywood. WARNING: You'll have to wade through a considerable amount of self-aggrandizment that I found tremendously off-putting toward the end. It's a rare occasion when I don't finish a book but I found myself skipping through the last third and ultimately bailed out with just a few chapters to go.
Readable, but not essential reading........2000-09-07
There's really no good insider showbiz tips or amazing gossip here. I found the book to be readable -- meaning I kept on reading once I picked it up but at any time I could have stopped and not felt like I was going to be missing a golden nugget.
It's a show biz biography of a manager. Did we really expect it to be an essential read?

For those who like this kind of book..........2006-05-03
If you think you'd find a lot of unrelated platitudes interesting, then you'll enjoy this book.
Covey is the best!.......2004-09-23
Covey stands tall above the rest in a world rife with self-improvement seminars. His practical wisdom can be applied to the workplace, marriage and parenting and truly enhance your life! Covey's strong Christian faith and commitment to family are evident in his philosophies and can only enrich every aspect of the whole person - which is what his 7 Habits are all about. This book touches on his "Begin with the end in mind" and shows you how. Highly recommend!
Profound and Powerful - This program deserves ten stars!.......2004-09-08
If you have ever said to yourself:
I have too much to do and not enough time to do it
OR
I can't find the balance between my personal life and work. When I take time from one to the other, it just makes matters worse.
OR
There's simply too little of me to go around
OR
I don't feel in control of my life
OR
Way down inside I have this empty feeling. It's like the song, "Is that all there is?"
First Things First is not just another time management program. Rather, this is a program that connects the investment of time to our deeper priorities in life. The concepts espoused by Dr. Covey are profound, powerful and pragmatic.
Rather than offering you another clock, First Things First provides you with a compass. While other programs teach you harder, faster, and smarter First Things First teaches you direction and priorities because where you are heading is more important than how fast you are going.
Keeping with Dr. Covey's tradition, this program is about effectiveness not just efficiency. But not just effectiveness in your business life, but in your personal life as well.
Great program and highly recommended.
Loved the book and enjoy the audio program.......2004-09-08
Stephen Covey unveils a powerful time management systems here that really works. I bought the book and went ahead and bought the cd-audio program as well. I am now getting more done in half the time. Thank you Dr. Covey!
Three authors, 1 CD - Good Highlights.......2004-03-04
Some people on the reviews complained about the book not just being Covey talking...but if you notice the book is written by three people (yeah, Amazon only shows 2, but I have the book in front of me) The CD is a good highlight to explaining the basics to the First Things First principles. The cd says to get the book for using the meat and potatoes of the book...BUT there is also a 3 Disc set out there which is Unabriged and tells it all (for some reason I can't find it on Amazon...but have found it in searching around the net) So if you want the basics to remind yourself of what you are doing (Review regularly to make it a part of your life is a common self improvement strategy) is quicker than re-reading the book over and over... especially when given the gift of traffic to slow down and enjoy the CD.
