Book Description

Brian Jones life was a David vs. Goliath. Young, petite, and naïve, his Goliath was the Rolling Stones money machine. Unlike the Bible, Brian lost his life. This book levels the battlefield by telling what happened to the band’s founder. Written from Brian’s POV, the Stones rise to stardom is chronicled, ending with British authorities lack to properly investigate the bi-sexual bandleader’s death at 27.

Brian recalls being an incest victim, homeless at age 16 and forced into prostitution. Regardless, with extreme talent, sexuality, and imagination he led the band he picked, taught and named to glory. His vision was to bring world music to the Stones catalog; the band declined—content to crank out mundane sounds as long as records sold.

After a fight over musical direction Brian left the band planning to start anew and take the Rolling Stones name with him. Three weeks later he drowned in his swimming pool. Brian’s tale of death threats and witness accounts recount what actually happened.

5 out of 5 stars BRIAN JONES...ANOTHER JFK?.......2007-09-20

I just read a grand review of this book that appears on Vintage Rock www.vintagerock.com.bjones_book.aspx in which the reviewer compares Brian's killing to the conspiracy behind JFK's assassination. What I find most interesting is the complete quiet we hear coming from the British Isles when so many are currently presenting clues and evidence surrounding Brian's death.

Even though Ms. Shepherd's book offers compelling facts relating to his death, she leaves out another suspicious death--that of Graham Bond who would've made a fantastic witness to talk about the threatening phone call Brian received at his "hideaway" only two days before his death. While the author does a dramatic job of re-enacting the events of Bond accepting the phone threat on Brian's behalf, she fails to mention that Bond "accidentally" fell under a train not long thereafter. Before he could personally testify about what he knew. Just as with witnesses who were willing to testify about JFK's assassination, many who were willing to testify about Brian's death also either suddenly disappeared or suddenly died! Coincidence? Think about it.

5 out of 5 stars Lonesome Dove.......2007-09-16

Since I learned this book is supposed to be written from Brian's POV I don't understand why some complain that the author only focuses on Brian's good qualities and doesn't put him down for all the horrible deeds and nasty pranks he was known to have committed against others. I got it right off. Since Brian is talking about himself here, he like any of us wouldn't be sitting down (or standing up LOL) talking badly about himself.

He probably couldn't see all his faults especially since those nasty pranks were mostly committed during his up's and down's mood swings, when he didn't have much control over what he was doing. None of us sees ourselves as others do, and Brian was hurting over losing the friendship and camaraderie of his band mates but he couldn't understand where he had turned them off. Also none of them believed his many ailments that caused him to miss performances and rehearsals. The other Stones thought he was just being a cry baby or lazy but he gave it his best shot. It just wasn't good enough for the healthy ones who couldn't sympathize with his predicament.

In reading this story I got to thinking of Brian Jones as a beautiful Lonesome Dove, bleeding from the inside and not knowing how to get the help and unquestioning love he so badly needed.

4 out of 5 stars WHAT A RIDE!.......2007-09-06

I'm part of a R&B band myself and got to meet Mick and the rest back in the day. So I try making time to read memoirs and such when I get the time. I've not written any reviews before but this story really caught me up. The book took so many twists and turns different than the rest out there that sometimes all stumble on each other with the same info.

I only wish this book would've gone into the story and testimony of Brian's murder earlier. That was the part that fascinated me. Not to say I want to believe it. But it for sure has more proof than anything I've seen before. All the facts come together and I hate to say that even though I don't want to believe what this story says happened, I can't find anything to prove it didn't happen.

I got to talking with others about this who say they heard similar storys for years but never saw it all laid out so totally. We'd like to see this turned into a film. Not like Stoned that is whitewash, but if this book is made into a movie as its written then we'd have something to watch for sure.

I only wonder why the Brits don't want to open the case. There's to much out there to ignore but hey that's on their heads.

5 out of 5 stars CONNECT THE DOTS............2007-09-05

I usually enjoy a good old fashioned murder mystery and decided upon this story for my next unsolved whodunit. I wasn't interested in the history of the Rolling Stones or their music per se but found the idea, that one of their own had been possibly murdered at the behest of some of their own, intriguing to say the least.
Any reader interested in true crime will find the lady author's last 3 chapters plus 3 part epilogue very enlightening; somewhat reminiscent of Agatha Christie. As I read her results, I began to do research myself into each aspect of the crime that was brought up. Amazingly I found there is much evidence out there if one takes the time to actually look for it in press releases, actual testimony plus word-of-mouth tales swapped as to what actually happened to Mr. Jones at the time of his death and shortly thereafter.
It is mind-boggling that British authorities did not and still have not seriously investigated what was flagrantly a murder for hire. I located old magazine articles (and some fairly new) that corroborate a majority of what Ms. Shepherd attests to in her book. I found interesting also the fact that fans of Brian Jones have so viciously attacked her regarding claims of his not-so-well hidden sexual preference and drug use. All that pales in comparison to the fact he was obviously murdered in a most heinous manner by those laughingly hired to protect him!
I cannot understand why more focus isn't placed on what the meat `n potatoes of this book actually is: proof positive that Brian was purposely done away with and afterwards his prized possessions either callously burned in a bonfire (which again British authorities apparently turned a blind eye into investigating) or hauled off by both his band mates and his killers. That's where the reader needs to focus and not on who kissed whom, male or female, or whether Brian was still heavily imbibing drugs and alcohol at the time of his drowning.
I highly recommend this book to all who enjoy connecting the dots and seeing for themselves that the murder of Brian Jones remains mainly a major unrecognized and overlooked cold case crime. For anyone who likes to see justice served we should ban together and demand a complete, honest investigation into this killing.

5 out of 5 stars STEWED & KEEFED.......2007-08-31

The honeymoon between Sir Mick and Keith apparently is at its end. Fragile nerves and high tensions have reached their peak and Keef is lashing out indiscriminately. His latest target is once again Brian Jones-the 63 year old Stone finds the band's former leader easy prey since the dead are hardly ever known to fight back. He believes he'll have a better chance of winning the battle of words against a ghost rather than take Mick on full force.

Oddly the open wound growing between Mick and Keith comes at a time when the author of Straight from the Heart is ready to announce the release of Brian's audiotapes. Word is she's finally received permission from the "keeper of the flame" for all these many years-who's mainly led a reclusive lifestyle since Brian's murder.

As part of the British rock scene during the late Sixties to early Seventies, I'd heard rumors flying that Brian had a hidden stash of tapes he'd recorded. We all figured they were only of music he'd put together during his stay at Cotchford. Now it appears that not only music was being composed while he lived the life of a solitary man, but that he had recorded his memoirs. Quite a feat for someone whom the Stones insisted was too incapacitated due to drugs and drinking to play guitar.

In my humble opinion I believe the author did a gargantuan job in re-enacting Brian's life in such an authentic and often tongue-in-cheek manner.

5 out of 5 stars Fred Jones is the guru of classroom management.......2007-08-18

When I started teaching last year I read Harry Wong's First Days of School which gave a brief overview of what to expect, but left a lot lacking. This year I decided to be more proactive and read Fred Jones's Tools for Teaching, and I must admit that I can't wait until school starts to implement everything. Jones's model makes sense in the same way that Wong's book does, but most importantly, you end up with a plan for what to implement and how to do it. This book is a must read for any new teacher! Read bot this book and Wong's and you'll be set.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS..........2007-07-29

....the single GREATEST handbook a teacher (espescially a new one) can ever get! I am highly indebted to Mr. Jones! This book is easy to read, it is 100% practical, and easy to implement. He really wants to help the teacher teach, not just give them a whole new list of stuff to do that they don't have time for! I really don't know what else to say, but buy it!!

This would also probably be good for first time parents or those who don't know much about discipline and the importance of saying "no" (and how to properly say it!). Obviously, the parts about desk alignment won't matter to them much, though the rest couldn't hurt!!

Great dor a new teacher or one who is changing grade levels. Common snese approach for today's classroom. Tips are useful and practical.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent tool often given to teachers for the wrong reasons.......2007-07-21

Everyone is likely to get some useful idea from this book whether or not one intends to use every prevention or remedy that Jones offers. The silly thing is that the author's attitude is: [paraphrasing here] 'If you're not applying the whole program of my book or the related videos, then don't blame me for any part of it not working.' That is, of course, a big dodge of responsibility on the part of the author. Since there are likely very few people who intend to use every single bit of advice offered in the book, this really allows Jones to boast that his combination of tips is guaranteed to work--just so long as you use every item of advice. The truth is that if you spend the first month of the school year attending to every behavior needing to be kept in check, you will likely be allowing your better students to lag behind in the material. Whatever time is used up during the class period or whole day is never recovered. Teaching is usually a zero-sum game in that way; you focus on one thing at the cost of taking the focus away from something else important.

I risk sounding cynical when I make my next complaint, which pertains to how much principals love this book. Any time a principal loves a book about classroom management, a teacher must be wary. The book is nearly guaranteed to leave out the supportive role the administration must play in disciplining students. Jones does find a tactful way to say that teachers are usually on their own when it comes to handling bad behavior. I couldn't agree more. Assistant principals and other people working for the administration want to be more involved in being a partner with the teacher in correcting the misbehavior, but principals delegate to them too many other responsibilities to allow them the time to help a teacher. Too often in today's schools, everyone (even the teacher) is expected to be the principal's helper rather than an effective mentor to students. The security guard or officer of the law that works in the school building is really put in the school as a visual cue to set parents at ease and keep already-compliant kids out of trouble. They often have very little real power to do anything without special authorization. Of course, none of these things are Jones' fault, but he's largely successful only because school administrators are too tired of doing the work necessary to keep kids disciplined.

4 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-07-19

This is a fantastic resource for teachers. There are so many common sense ideas and tips in this book, especially for middle grades. This will help save teachers from working harder, not smarter. I wish I had read this before my first year of teaching.

4 out of 5 stars More specialized than Volume 1.......2007-07-08

This is a very good book. These remarks are for Linux users on the way up. If you are already an über-üser, well, you will probably like this book anyway.

If you don't have the first volume, you might want to start with it. It has some simple but very useful things that apply to just about anyone with their own Linux box and a command line.

This volume is much more advanced, and most of the tricks and techniques deal with much more specialized problem domains, ie. things you might not have run into yet. One advantage of this book over the first is that it is very up to date in its recommendations of existing software to use.

5 out of 5 stars This book totally rocks!.......2006-11-18

I can't say enough about the work done in Linux Server Hacks vII by the two Bs. Bill and Brian have hit the ball out of the ballpark with this one.

Just the section on LVM (Logical Volume Management) have saved my bacon!

Every single "hack" (read tip) is extremely practical, applicable and relevant to managing and administering Linux systems whether "servers" or not!

The absolute best part of this book is that you get really useful, insightful views into the experiences of seasoned veterans of Unix systems. If you sit in a NOC or if you're the 24x7 guy/gal on a server farm, this book is an occupational requirement! Everyone else will appreciate it if they're running Linux. In my modest network of perhaps 30 Linux systems, I can tell you that I saved hours of effort with just two of the hacks included in this volume. Considering the time savings, buying this book saved my company more than 300% on the cover price.

5 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!.......2006-09-12

Are you a system administrator? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Bill Von Hagen and Brian K Jones, have done an outstanding job of writing volume two of a book that focuses on cool hacks they developed or used in their server and system administration careers.

Von Hagen and Jones, begin by exploring the authentication options that are available to you in heterogeneous networked computing environments and simplify administering user accounts and passwords. Then, the authors explore ways of connecting to remote systems. Next, the authors explain how to set up central servers that do things like synchronize the time on all the systems in your environment, deliver IP addresses to newly connected hosts, and integrate these services with existing ones. The authors then present a variety of cool sysadmin tips and techniques that they've accumulated over the years, including how to keep processes running without writing a daemon or staying logged in, how to use PXE to netboot Linux, how to share information with fellow sysadmins in a centralized fashion, how to get the most out of classic but incredibly useful terminal-oriented applications, and so on. They continue to explore some cool ways of making it easier for you to manage storage, deploy new systems, do backups of today's huge disks, and even reduce the need for some of the restore requests that occasionally clog every sysadmin's inbox. Then, the authors provide some tips and tricks for managing distributed storage and making sure the administrative environments on your servers are synchronized. They then discuss a wide range of security tools and techniques that can help you sleep at night and protect your systems at the same time. Next, they provide techniques for optimizing system performance, whether by figuring out who's hogging the entire CPU and shooting down that user's network sessions or by using cool knobs in the /proc filesystem to tweak system performance or using journaling filesystems to minimize system restart time. Then, they include hacks that enable you to centralize log information in a variety of ways, be warned when problems arise, and get the most out of system status information, whether it's log information, internal disk controller status data, or remote hardware status information that you can collect via SNMP. Finally, the authors show you how to boot crippled systems so that you can diagnose problems, repair munged filesystems, and even recover deleted files of data that was stored on disks that have gone belly up.

This most excellent book has presented hacks that are techniques that the authors have used at various times. More importantly, they view these techniques as time- and hassle-savers that are usually downright fun and cool.

Book Description

In 1995 Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy Book was released to an unsuspecting public. Called "an unstoppable phenomenon" by its publisher, it became an immediate international best-seller. Now 2005 can be named the Year of Lady Cottington with the 10th anniversary of the publication that first exposed the world to the science of fairy exploration.

This volume records in authentic facsimile the latest incarnation of this notorious book along with eight additional pages and enhanced artwork throughout, virtually overflowing with freshly flattened fairies. Former Monty Python member Terry Jones and artist Brian Froud provide a new introduction to place the book in its proper perspective, offering insight into the book's often maligned historic relevance. As a bonus, included is an incriminating DVD showing rare film footage of the elderly Lady Cottington in her garden demonstrating her fairy-squashing technique, as well as a photo gallery, desktop wallpaper, and screensavers.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Disgusting and Mildly Pornographic.......2007-09-05

I bought this book for my 10yo daughter who loves everything fairy. It is absolutely NOT for children, with text references to a sex-starved bishop ("shoved his tongue in my mouth") and incredibly ugly drawings of fairies. I ended up throwing it away, I was so disgusted with it. Fairy stuff should be beautiful, not hideous.

2 out of 5 stars Dissapointing Fake.......2007-08-11

I had bought 'Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy Letters' and I enjoyed it, although I took it with a pinch of salt. I then heard about the book, so when I saw it I got it with anticipation.

Unfortunately, for a real Faery believer like me, this book is a total farce. I am not at all bothered by the 'nude' drawings, I can honestly say that we have all seen much worse. But I do totally agree that this is not a book for children.

What I mainly object to is the fact that these books are introduced as real tales of a real person, "verified" by Mr Froud, certifying the authenticity of the manuscript, her house, archives, etc, etc. So for someone finding these books for the 1st time, and due to Mr Fraud's notoriety in the world of Faery as a firm believer and someone who respects Faeries, it is very disappointing to realize that this is a complete and vulgar 'creation' and lack of respect towards the Faeries.

It is just another publication for Mr Faud's art -see his FaeryOracle Card No 26, O! That Gnome, on the entry for 17/05/1907- at least he should've bothered to create new images! Furthermore, in general it is a mockery of Faery. Even as fiction it is stupid, just see the sudden change of handwriting, especially the "d" between 1902 and 1903, over the page.

But the worst joke is the DVD. Not only is the young girl's famous photograph on the book a waste of space -who on earth can see the faeries in it?!- but the film on the dvd where she casually turns around and there's a plastic leg sticking out of her book... boy, they could've had more imagination!! Now, the horrendous man dressed as a woman playing Lady Cottington is the nail on the coffin, he didn't even bother to sound like a woman. If they meant it as a joke, it totally failed. Instead, it completed the vulgarity of the whole exercise.

The worst thing is that we are so used to see Mr Fraud's name mentioned as a tool of credibility for countless publications. Well, this one has plummeted his reputation into the abyss of fakes.

5 out of 5 stars Book was so unique and different.......2007-07-05

The book arrived in two days. It was a gift to my niece, who loves fairies.
This book was unique and different than other fairy books, and had beautiful details on the pages.

2 out of 5 stars "Unsuspecting" is right........2007-04-09

I bought this book because I thought the premise was delightful. It sounded fun, wacky, creative, whimsical, and clever. That's why I'm giving it 2 stars.

What the book description fails to tell you is this is NOT a book for children. Nor for anyone who likes to keep their minds out of the gutter.

The drawings illustrate promiscuous nudity and sexual activity, including active body parts better left private. The text covers, at the very least, sexual advances and activities of clergy on victims, as well as obvious psychological problems of the characters in the book. That paragraph was as far as I read before I threw the book in the trash can.

I bought this book for my son's 11th birthday. You can imagine my surprise when my daughter found the pages wrapped in sealed, plain brown paper in the back. I'm just really glad I looked through it before giving it to him.

If there is a place on this page giving information as to the promiscuous content of the book, it is not noticeable enough for parents to see it, and I recommend a change in the advertising of the book and, I can only guess, the entire series.

Book Description

In 1986, the magical fantasy movie Labyrinth introduced the world to a set of unforgettable goblins from the minds of Jim Henson and Brian Froud. Not only has the film become a classic with a huge cult following, but Brian Froud's long out- of-print book about the malevolent and cantankerous goblins—packed with his brilliant drawings and paintings—has achieved similar cult status.

Now Abrams is proudly reissuing The Goblins of Labyrinth in a brand-new 20th Anniversary Edition. With even more artwork than the original and a new afterword from Brian Froud, this mesmerizing work, like Froud's The World of The Dark Crystal, is a must-have for collectors and Brian Froud fans everywhere.

I remember when Labyrinth first came out I watched it over and over. I thought this book would delve into the world of Labyrinth in detail. No such luck. It's nice and I love Brian Froud's drawings but not as great as I hoped.

As an owner of the original 1986 print I was very pleased with this reprint. The paper is strong and the printing looks very good.
At the end there are a few new extra pages with some interesting never before seen concepts by Mr. Froud.
I wish there will be a Making of photo book someday, but as for now this is the must own book for LABYRINTH fans.
Oh, and forget the RETURN TO THE LABYRINTH Manga...please! ;-)

Book Description

This handsome and unusual book is the diary kept by Lady Cottington. Instead of pressing flowers in it, she pressed fairies (with a resulting look remarkably similar to watercolors). Handwritten and handsomely bound, this book is as surprising as it is pleasing. The publisher (at the request of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Fairies) notes that no fairies were injured or killed in the manufacturing process...

5 out of 5 stars Flights of Fancy with Lady Cottington's Fairies.......2007-01-29

Like collectors of pressed flowers, this book presents itself as a collection of "pressed fairies". Very creative, completed in watercolours, this book is wonderful to view and certainly worth owning. The art is fantastic, a must of lovers of art and lovers of fairies, not to mention those prone to flights of fancy.
The book is wonderfully presented, with a large soft padded cover it is both beautiful inside and out. Makes a great gift too!

5 out of 5 stars Lady Cottington's presses fairy book, a amazingly talented artiist with a humorous twist.......2006-12-03

"Pressed Fairy Book? What the...?" This was my initial reaction when I first laid eyes on this crazy book when I worked at B. Dalton a few years back. The title itself is enough to immediately draw your attention, "Pressed Fairy Book." It sparks your curiosity doesn't it?
This book is filled from cover to cover of beautifully drawn illustrations of smashed fairies, sounds a bit morbid but I assure you there were no fairies intentionally harmed, I'd rather say the fairies were all voluntarily smashed. This book starts out like a journal of a little girl written in that sloppy writing we all had at seven years old. The little girl explains how as she was sitting in her garden writing in her journal she has these bugs (which she later found out were fairies) flying all around her head and she used her book to smash one and oops! It was a fairy, but oddly the fairy was making faces as it was smashed in her book, almost like it though it to be fun or a game. Through out the years the little girl collects any fairy she runs across in her book; catch many different varieties of fairies.
This book has throughout the years been my favorite book, and I often give it as a Christmas gift because it is most decorative and amusing for everyone who lays their eyes on it. This book is exceptionally rare and becoming increasingly hard to

Find at many book stores, which is an even better reason to give this as a gift to the art or fairy lover in your family. It serves as a great coffee table book and will entertain even the grumpiest of in-laws visiting your home. I give this book a rating of Five Stars in illustrations, four stars in story line, and Three stars in availability. I recommend this book for all ages, and highly recommend this book as a gift. You can find this book at WWW.AMAZON.COM . This book price ranges from $[...] - $[...], there are also many alternatives to the book its self there is a calendar, pocket book and a new version of this book called "Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy Letters" which gives you additional hilarious illustrations of smashed fairies. This author and illustrator really know how to put a smile on anyone's face.

A "must have" for children and for those young at heart...very creative, thoughtfull, funny and charming...sure to make anyone smile!

2 out of 5 stars A Kind of Gross Fairy Book.......2006-06-12

I don't know, I usually love books about fairies, as a matter of fact I collect them, but this is definatley not my favorite book about fairies. I think the plot is kind of sick, but I must say the illustrations are amazing. I enjoyed when the narrator was young, but once she got older the book turned form cute and gross to just plain gross.

4 out of 5 stars Cute and funny!.......2006-03-10

My mom suprised me with this book a couple of years ago. I guess she knew I'd like it, since I've always had an interest in all things magical.
The book is a journal kept by Lady Cottington throughout her life, starting when she's a little girl. When fairies start to land on her book, she snaps it shut and catches a psychic impression of them (very few fairies were actually harmed from this process, so don't worry...it seems many of them were actually trying to get caught). The pictures are mostly funny, some are slightly perverse.
The journal entries are also quite humorous and realistic. The first entries are in childish handwriting and language. There are even cute spelling errors. The handwriting and grammar progressively improve with Lady Cottington's age.
This book is not for very young children and I recommend previewing it (pictures and text) before giving it to any children. Some of the fairies are completely naked and there a couple of entries in the journal where men make sexual advances on Lady C.

Book Description

It would be a perfect world if everyone could quit their jobs and devote themselves fully to the causes they believed in. Instead, The Better World Handbook shows caring, but busy people how to live out their progressive values and have a life! The principle behind this engaging guide is to incorporate everyday activism into even the most mundane areas of our lives-like grocery shopping, banking, eating, reading the newspaper, and working.

The book begins with a concise summary of our society's most pressing problems that lead directly to seven foundations necessary for building a better world: economic fairness, comprehensive peace, ecological sustainability, deep democracy, social justice, a culture of simplicity, and revitalized community. Subsequent chapters are organized around intuitive topics such as Food, Money, Transportation, Work, and Media, focusing on activities that support the seven foundations for a better world. A purchase can allow a locally owned business to thrive; money invested in the right bank can create opportunities for poor communities; a vacation can contribute to preserving wilderness areas; tuning-in to public and alternative media can put readers back in control of their thoughts, feelings and values that mainstream media marginalize.

Practical and extremely well researched by four university instructors who have synthesized knowledge from a wide variety of sources, The Better World Handbook provides readers with the essential information they need to take effective actions that will make a difference across the entire spectrum of the world's problems.

I am a sponsor for an environmental club at my school and we use this book as our basic resource for information, for ideas to promote environmental awareness within the school, and as an easy buying guide for environmenally friendly products. It is an easy tool to use and I like all the useful information in one readable location.

5 out of 5 stars Change your world with just 300 pages.......2006-05-07

This book has been such a great tool in getting college students motivated. I took Sociology from Ross Haenfler this semester and it was AMAZING. We used this book as one of our textbooks and this past week everyone in the class agreed that THIS is the one book that won't be returning to the book mart. It has such valuable advice to get out in the community, city, world and make a difference. If you want to make a major change or even just learn how to recycle properly .. this is the book you need to read. BUY THIS BOOK!

5 out of 5 stars Practice What You Preach.......2005-02-03

I LOVED this book. It gives all kinds of good practical advice on how every day actions really CAN make a difference. It cites a lot of other great books too that you can read in further detail about the things that are mentioned in the book which i really appreciate.
When I first read this book I was a student activist who thought that i always needed to do BIG things to change the world. Some of the little things that i would do made me feel different from the rest of my friends and make me feel like i was not doing enough. This book affirmed some of my decisions and made me feel serious about doing more.
This book is a good guide to actually living to make the world a better place! There are a lot of issues in the book that can and MUST be further researched but I think that the authors do a wonderful job at encouraging you to actually do so by suggesting books and websites to get you started. Its good for what it is: a guide to how to live. And it can point you in great directions for further more academic exploration of the issues that are presented.
I will say that I have used this book as MY BIBLE to living. I would suggest this in addition to Sojourners magazine to those who want to look at these same issues from a Christian perspective

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable resource.......2004-11-19

Want to make a difference but don't know where to begin? Try reading "The Better World Handbook" by Ellis Jones, Ross Haenfler, Brett Johnson, and Brian Klocke. They offer a variety of actions on issues like poverty, environmental damage, and free trade that you can incorporate into your life. What's great about this book is that you can pick and choose what works for you at the moment - there are suggested actions that may not seem doable now but you can probably do later. You don't have agree with each issue the authors describe and suggest actions for, and the authors make a good attempt at avoiding a self-righteous tone. I have notes and have highlighted what actions I can manage, and will keep referring to this list (probably on the new year's eves to come).

The authors first explain our culture of cynicism and define the 7 most common traps that prevent people from taking action on issues they care about. I found this especially revealing as I have often caught myself in one or more of those traps. They then describe the seven foundations of a better world (economic fairness, comprehensive peace, ecological sustainability, deep democracy, social justice, culture of simplicity, and revitalized community) and have a list of references on each foundation. What follows are numerous actions regarding money (e.g. banking), shopping, food, personal living and relationships, community, home, work, media, politics, transportation, and travel. Some of the website links they include are not up-to-date, so I strongly recommend doing a search on the organizations mentioned and trying to find similar links and organizations.

This book is a starting point and can inspire other actions that are not included in the book. Reading "The Better World Handbook" is an invaluable first step to realizing that one person can really make a difference.

1 out of 5 stars Tedious Secular Liberal Drivel.......2004-07-24

Want to Change the World (tm)? Then stick with your old Utne Readers. There's nothing in this book you won't find there, and dozens of other places. Do you really need another book to tell you to recycle and watch less TV?

The authors, although they decry the holier-than-thou attitude of some of their activist peers, fall prey to the same illness. In the first few pages, they dismiss the majority of Americans - that is, Christians - by announcing that if you believe that human nature is the cause of our troubles, you're part of the problem. (Ever hear of original sin?) They assume that their readers have unlimited money to drop on organic bok choi and shoes with hemp content, but they miss obvious healthy and frugal options like breastfeeding. They'll tell you how to be an activist in the public schools, but not about homeschooling. The shopping guide - which is available on their Web site for free, by the way - ranks corporations so that you can make the most politically correct choices. Of course, there's little to tell you what criteria were used for these judgment calls, you don't really need to think for yourself, do you? Just march in lock-step with your progressive peers and the world will be a better place.

If you really want to change the world without changing the root of our problems - the human heart - save your money and donate it to a reputable charity instead. But if you want to score a date with that vegan, World Bank-protesting hottie, this book will teach you the right noises to make.

Book Description

Brian Jones was initially the Stones' creative driving force, but by the late '60s, he was drinking too much and strung out on drugs. He left the band in 1969 and three weeks later was found dead in his swimming pool. Acclaimed author Terry Rawlings draws on new interviews to document Brian's ill-fated final days and hours and names his murderer.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Engaging and captures a true sense of Jones' early life...packed with rare photos.......2007-01-10

Great read if you're a fan of Brian Jones and his work. Compared it with Bill Wyman's book, STONE ALONE, and details of his early struggles as a musician are pretty similar. As with any biography, what's true and what is not is always very questionable. However, this book gives the reader an insight of what kind of life Jones probably led and the path to his demise. I would rate STONE ALONE ahead of this book for reliable information because it's from the Stones' bassist himself. The Anna Wohlin book reads like a romantic novel, and the material is very questionable. This book is more for diehard fans of Brian Jones.

4 out of 5 stars Who Killed Christopher Robin.......2006-09-25

I have this book and felt it did not show the real Brian Jones. Brian was a very intelligent, great musician,
and basically a good and decent man. When people use drugs/alcohol their personality changes dramatically.
When Brian was at Cotchford Farm he was attempting to get his life back on track. In writing about Brian
one has to remember this was the Sixties and the culture, attitudes and social beliefs were entirely different
than in the following decades. Brian was a drug addict and probably an alcoholic. He was trying to cope with
his problems with the other band members, his life in general. Since there was no rehab or counseling like
there is today he felt this was the only way to handle it. I truly believe Brian Jones was definitely murdered.
Probably by Frank Thorogood with some help. Brian was more than the demonized versions I have seen in
several books. It is only fair to this musician to portray him in all aspects and not just when he was messed
up, and depressed. He was often compassionate, kind and cared deeply about his loyal friends. Let us remember this please

5 out of 5 stars Of all the Brian Jones books, the best IMHO.......2006-08-02

Brian Jones was the founder of the Rolling Stones, and this book unflinchingly lays everything out about his life for the reader. Based on years of research and interviews with people that knew him, it is probably the most factual of the books I have read. It also lays the ground for some serious discussion about the possibility that Brian's swimming pool death was not accidental. This is not a "new" revelation - murky details about the death have been scrutinized pretty much since the day after it happened in July 1969. The author clearly demonstrates that it is within the realm of extreme possibility that Brian's death was no accident. Oh, and someone allegedly confessed, as well.

Apparently Keith Richards has spent some effort over the years trying to get to the bottom of just what happened the night Brian died. This is the book that Keith said, "...the cat [the author] probably got it about right". This statement says to me that Keith feels this is probably the closest we'll ever get to any truth.

4 out of 5 stars The Strange Death Of An Evil Genius.......2006-03-24

Rolling Stones biographies are plentiful, yet the release of this book in 1994 increased the speculation that Rolling Stones founder Brian Jones was murdered soon after he was dumped from the band in 1969. Padded out with early details of Brian's teenage fatherhood to three bastard offspring by separate girls, his self-absorbed behaviour and violence towards his girlfriends, this update makes you wonder how the unlikeable character made it as far as he did. After revealing little of note in the first half, the book gets juicy when recreating Brian's final days spent in the company of celebrities including Maurice Gibb, Steve Winwood and John Mayall at his country home. Theories about the guitarist's pool drowning remain a little haphazard, but Who Killed Christopher Robin? offers some sympathy for the little devil.

4 out of 5 stars Who killed BrianJones.......2006-03-01

Interesting book and theory on who killed the Stones founding member. After reading this book I was convinced there was more to Jones' death than an accidental swimming accident. The book flows nicely and leaves one quite sad to see the effect greed, fame and fortune can have on some people.

4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Here you get the brief super-powered backstory, and what happened to Jewel, and why she gave up the whole hero thing.

Luke Cage and the very nasty depradations of the Purple Man appear as major parts. It is all quite sordid. What do you expect an egotistical super villain with mind control will get up to?

5 out of 5 stars The best........2005-02-27

What is there to say here that hasn't already been said about volumes one, two and three? Bendis' characterization, dialogue and storytelling are amazing, Michael Gaydos' pencils and inks are perfect, and the colors are great, as well.

But there is something else, because this is the bes volume of the series. This volume contains some great (heartrending, maybe, but great) flashbacks, and some of the best dialogue yet. It's impossible not to fall in love with Jessica Jones, despite her demeanor and her self-loathing.

Bendis, in an unusual move, introduced an all-new character to the Marvel Universe, fitting her into much of Marvel's history--this, before Marvel started on popping out a new character every month, as they are now; this was during the decade during which Marvel continually rehashed the same characters--and it worked so well.

This volume has the best story, the best characterizaton, the best dialogue, yet. The artwork is beautiful, as always, and the subtle (as well as the obvious) changes in artwork and style used to differ between different times are a nice touch, as well.

5 out of 5 stars a great anti-heroine.......2004-09-29

I started reading this book because Matt Hollingsworth gave it to me, and it has since become one of my favorites. I love reading it in public, just so I can tell people about it and say, no, it is not the TV series!

Despite having some impressive powers, Jessica Jones has never been your typical heroine. She's a trash-talking, normal-looking chick who has trouble making sense of life. In this final book, though, we get to make sense of hers. We finally learn how she became a hero, and the awful reason why she stopped being one.

Bendis is not big on action. He is not big on fantasy. What makes him one of the great writers today is that he is big on dialogue, and character. Jessica is a beautiful creation. Her insecurites make her stronger.

Bendis is also great at pulling obscure MU mythology out of the woodwork and making it interesting. Carol Danvers, the uber-heroine best known for being the lady Rogue stole her powers from, is the perfectly perfect foil for the troubled Jessica. The Purple Man, meanwhile, is pulled out from the archives to tear her down. Jean Grey, Luke Cage, Scarlet Witch, Nick Fury and the Ant Man also fill the pages. Great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars The end.......2004-09-12

The fourth and final storyarc of Brian Michael Bendis' brilliant Alias reveals the origin of ex-Avenger turned burned out private investigator Jessica Jones and her connection to Killgrave AKA the Purple Man. Even though it only lasted for 28 issues, Alias was truly something special. Bendis' look at the underbelly of the Marvel universe made for compulsive reading, and the characterization of Jessica was the flawed human that readers could actually relate to. The relationship between Jessica and Luke Cage also gets tied up, and it sets the stage for Bendis' new series the Pulse; which has become a cult hit for Marvel. The art by Michael Gaydos still gives the book the same grittiness it's had since it's first issue saw the light of day, and the series comes to a satisfying end thanks to Bendis' brilliant (as usual) storytelling. His transformation of the Purple Man from third rate Marvel villain to mass murdering maniac must be seen to be believed. All in all, it's sad that Alias is over, and if you missed out on the series than you should definitely pick up all four volumes.

4 out of 5 stars Too Bad It's Over.......2004-04-22

This is the 4th and final Alias TPB. It reveals a good deal about Jessica's past which ties in with the Purple Man story line. This series has been great all the way through, though I'd say the first and third TPB's were the best of the four. I hate to see it go but at least her character will continue on in The Pulse. I highly recommend any of the Alias books to someone wanting an entertaining and different look on the Marvel Universe.

Chapters cover topics from marriage and divorce to real estate, with titles such “Because a Hearse Doesn’t Come with a Luggage Rack” (estate planning) and “Retirement Planning: Two Six-Month Vacations Every Year.” Using amusing but pointed stories and anecdotes from his own and friends’ experiences, the author explains the importance of prudent financial planning and management in the early years.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2006-10-11

As a young professional with a new business and a new wife, I found Getting Started to be extremely helpful at getting me to understand the basics of financial planning for someone younger. I especially love the fact that this book was written by someone MY AGE who does not lecture you, but rather presents information with personal stories and humor. This is a must read for anyone in Generations X and Y looking to get ahead!

5 out of 5 stars A tremendous help for recent college graduates!.......2006-09-22

After graduating from school, I shuttered to think about the world that awaited me. No, not the world of work - I was actually looking forward to that. I was petrified of handling my own finances. Getting Started is a great resource for other people my age, looking to find their way through the mess of bills, loans, and payments. Unlike other finance books, this book is written to our (20 and 30 year olds) generation - without being corny or lame. The book is well written, it's easy and actually quite funny. I highly recommend it to any recent college graduates or anyone who is looking for a bit of easy-to-understand advice in handling their finances.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Read!!!.......2006-09-12

Brian Jones really hit the nail on the head with this one. As a 25 year old, just getting started in my career, I really found this book helpful. It gives real-life ways to save and make your money work for you and helped me realize I didn't need to be a millonare to start saving and securing my financial future. And as a bonus in addition to the great information the book is written in an interesting and easy to relate to mannor. I would recomend this book to anyone my age looking to plan a little for their future.
