Book Description
Dove Award-winning gospel vocal trio Selah returns to the spotlight with a new group member. Their 2006 release offers moving duets with artist such as Nichole Nordeman and Jason Crabb, including the hit single "Bless the Broken Road," featuring guest vocalist Melodie Crittenden. Our songbook features original keys and PVG arrangements for all 12 songs.
Book Description
Having been a songwriter most of my life, condensing my ideas and emotions into short rhyming couplets and setting them to music, I had never really considered writing a book. But upon arriving at the reflective age of fifty, I found myself drawn, for the first time, to write long passages that were as stimulating and intriguing to me as any songwriting I had ever done.
And so
Broken Music began to take shape. It is a book about the early part of my life, from childhood through adolescence, right up to the eve of my success with the Police. It is a story very few people know.
I had no interest in writing a traditional autobiographical recitation of everything that’s ever happened to me. Instead I found myself drawn to exploring specific moments, certain people and relationships, and particular events which still resonate powerfully for me as I try to understand the child I was, and the man I became.

The Bee's Knees.......2007-09-22
Insightful, unsparingly candid, magically descriptive, and often hysterically funny, this is a real gem of a book, a delightful surprise to those who may yet underestimate Sting's prodigious talents.
In vivid, brutally honest, and sometimes positively lyrical passages, it introduces us to the young Gordon Sumner, a humble Newcastle milkman's son, as he travels on his long, arduous, misadventure-plagued physical and spiritual path to the "Sting" we thought we knew, and his "overnight success" with The Police.
For anyone who has - perhaps inadvertently - developed a liking for Sting's music, and who now somehow seeks greater understanding of the fascinating, profoundly unexpected origins of the "legend", this is a must-have. For others who just plain enjoy a good read, with the extra bonus of funny, genuinely touching, thought-provoking, even inspirational story-telling, this is an unequivocal treasure.
Great book, but watch the language, Sting!.......2007-08-08
I and my family have listened to Sting and Police songs for a long time and so this seemsd like a great chance to get in a little bonding time and read this memoir.
I do like the book. It is well written and very interesting, a look into real-life and all of its positives and negatives. Some of the chapters were a bit lenghty.
I would have liked it more had I not felt the need to change some of the text as I read to my son. Yes, it is real-life, and there are actual conversations by actual people involved in Rock music and all that goes along with it. This was the only drawback as far as I was concerned.
I recommend this book with a caveat for those who are not used to or comfortable with using profanity in front of their children. Sting, I know it would have not been so "real", but your own vocabulary and that of some of your comrades is obviously much better than some of what I read in your book.
Will read again...and then maybe again...........2007-07-23
I so enjoyed this book. To any Sting or The Police fan I would highly recommend the read. I learned so much about the start of the musician and the group, that I did not know before. I feel that I have been a fan of their music most of my life, but honestly through osmosis. You know, their music is everywhere, playing in the back of your mind, then you make a conscious decision that, yes, in fact, you really do enjoy the music of Sting and The Police. Seeing how I was three when The Police first formed, I didn't really have the oppurtunity the first time to devote myself to full fanship. Well, now that I find myself deep in the throes of such, I truly, truly, truly enjoyed reading this book, learning how Sting honed his skills, developed his showmanship, first encountered Stewart, how the band acquired Andy, thus going from four to three, in addition to the personal recountings of many involved. So, YES, a resounding yes, if you love Sting and the music of The Police a fraction as much as I do, do not waste any more time!! Buy this book...NOW!!!
Fantastic for music fans, but could be seen as boring for others.......2007-06-11
Sting puts meticulous effort in his descriptions. Whether it is the setting he is currently in, or a new character to the story, he can be called upon to give a description that gives the reader a clear image to work with. Each character has a separate personality, and that is easily portrayed in Sting's writing. He is tends to say "so there we are" quite often, going into a lengthy and often humorous description of his current situation. In a book that, due to its length, could have turned out as an autobiography, Sting embellishes quite enough to provide clear imagery and keep it interesting.
He also effectively utilizes plot structure, beginning with the current time and putting the whole story in a drug-induced flashback. He goes into detail about his childhood to set up the story and actions of his adult life, and simultaneously tells the various story arcs (school, his jazz band, Last Exit, Frances and the baby, Last Exit, the Police) as they go on, effectively giving clarity to the hectic nature of his life while also preventing the story from being too confusing for the reader. Finally the story comes full circle, and we learn about what caused him to go to Rio de Janeiro in the first place experience the epiphany that spawned his memoir.
Most importantly, however, is the ongoing theme of self-inquiry going on in Stings head. He constantly questioned what is best for him (both mentally and financially), how to be a good father for his baby, as good friend to his peers, and a good husband for Frances. With each major plot-changing choice, he deliberates an extensive length of time, questioning his own values, self-worth, and overall intelligence. The reader feels immense sympathy for his situation, and continues to cheer him on, whether his choice was successful or not.
Very insightful book!.......2007-05-14
Although I have been a Sting fan for a long time, I had been a little disenchanted with his recent venture into folk music. Upon reading this book, I gained a great appreciation for the obvious maturation process Sting has gone through. The younger years (pre-fame) were interesting and I could relate to the inner conflict he weathered. His lyrics are much more "real" now that I've read about his experiences. I want to listen to each of his ablums in chronologcal order so I can match the songs with the trials he was experiencing at the time of the writings. The upcoming Police concert will be appreciated in sight and sound with a keen appreciation for the history of Sting's growing years.

Book Description
In Grace Schulman’s luminous new collection, music inspires meditations on joy, faith, death, and the heart. The title refers to Itzhak Perlman’s resolution to perform despite a missing string, and so the book celebrates life in its fullness and in its limitations. Here Thelonius Monk evokes Creation when he snaps his fingers “to shape pain into order.” At a street intersection where churches and a synagogue stand together, the poet recalls that “music soared in quarrels, / moans, blues, calls-and-answers, hymns that rose up / together from stone.” Hailed by Harold Bloom as “a vital and permanent poet,” Grace Schulman praises the day even in moments of deepest sorrow.
Book Description
In 1993, three young boys were murdered in West Memphis, Arkansas. In what was widely considered a witch hunt, three older boys were convicted of the killings. Ten years later, Henry Rollins used his considerable cultural chops to raise money for their defense fund and for DNA testing, which could help clear them. His vehicle? The acclaimed CD “Rise Above” and a world tour. Broken Summers details the rehearsing of Black Flag songs he hadn’t played in years, dealing with an arrogant manager or two, a diverse group of musicians, recording the CD, and the arduous trek from Tucson to Tokyo that included grilling by heartland shock jocks unsympathetic to his cause. The book covers 14 months of desperate lows and dramatic highs, all rendered in Rollins’s trademark combative style. Included are black-and-white photos of the rehearsals, recording sessions, and tour.
Customer Reviews:
Fans of Henry # 1, Look Here!.......2007-03-29
The title of this review refers to a review I wrote of Rollins' "Unwelcomed Songs". This book, "Broken Summers", showcases Henry #1: funny, articulate and insightful. The man truly gives readers a window not only into his life, but into his mind. Books like this are why journaling is often called an art form.
The only thing that doesn't work here? The added-on Thomas Wolfe tribute chapter, "Nights Below the Treeline". It comes at the end of the book; it's all right for what it is---evidence of Rollins' continued growth as a writer---but it doesn't really fit with the rest of manuscript. But that's a minor concern.
This is a fine work by a talented author. If this is the first Henry Rollins book you've ever read, you're in for quite a treat.
The grit dirt and feel of the road.......2005-05-10
Henry Rollins is not your drugged out space case of a musician. Join him as he writes in breathtaking painful clarity about his neurosis, his thoughts and life on the road. Amped only by an abundance of caffiene, it's an intense ride of focused agression, anger and anguish.
If you're a fan if it's a must read. If not - it might open your eyes to someone old school that manages to be brave and new.
Another Interesting Book By Henry Rollins.......2004-05-05
This book is by far Rollins' most mature writing. Like other books by Rollins Broken Summers has a journal format which creates a sort of intimacy with the reader. It is interesting to read the ideas, rants and daily goings on of a person as well known as Henry Rollins.
Make sure to pick up Rise Above - Album To Benefit the West Memphis Three as well. That is after all the whole reason this book came to be at all.
Not the average Rollins.......2004-05-01
This book is great companion piece to both the Rise Above CD and Henry's current speaking tour. Although the book is slow going at times with workout schedules and menu plans it gives a great insight to touring, band realtions and the politics of making a benefit CD.
You feel for Henry throughout the book that his good intentions are disrupted by other people's agendas and politics and you find yourself hoping he sells 10 million copies of the CD, despite how you may feel about the West Memphis Three.
Don't bother with this book if you're easily offended by truth. Henry frequently challenges the actions of the US government but it's rather him thinking aloud then going on a full on rant. Give it a try. It'll make you think.
henry can do no wrong.......2004-04-16
Henry Rollins can not write a bad book, i've read every single book he has written and they are all good. He writes how he feels and sometimes it makes you feel better. His situations are outragious and lately his books have had alittle Rollins humor he's the man and you should buy this book, and every other book that was writen by Henry Rollins.

We All Need Forgiveness; We All Need His Grace.......2007-06-23
Thank you, Sandi for writing this book! At times after my own divorce I took on far too much responsibility for it --- and felt like a failure. This book is a wonderful reminder that God loves us --- before, during, and after our mistakes --- or other people's misunderstandings. This is an excellent book that will remind the reader of God's mercy and care.

A Discouraging Book That Encourages You.......2006-12-24
Sandi Patti redefined what Christian music was in the 1980s. No longer was it a four-piece band singing three chord melodies that everybody could sing along with. Whether that is good or bad, of course, is the personal judgment of each individual. But in the pantheon of change, it was Sandi Patti, Amy Grant, and Michael W. Smith who changed the face of CCM in the 1980s. (Another change was facilitated by Steven Curtis Chapman in the 1990s).
Until this book came out, the only thing we knew about Sandi Patti was the gossip, both good and bad (mostly bad). But let's give the girl credit - she got right to the point and confessed to the adultery in the introduction. She also told many a story that did not present her in the most flattering of spotlights.
"Broken On The Back Row" is not a therapeutic book in the sense that it will be used as a clinical manual for Christian shrinks. What it is, quite frankly, is the public confession and memoirs of the most talented singer of her era. And what Sandi Patti taught us is that everything has a price. Her price for fame and fortune? The loss of her husband and family, the loss of public trust, and her loss of an effective ministry for Jesus Christ. This book does restore some of the ministry while it leaves the trust in a vacuum.
Many of the stories are heartbreaking, like her leaving her brother in a hospital possibly dying (he recovered) to go do a Christian concert. In most cases but admittedly not all, Sandi puts the blame on herself for what happened.
If Sandi Patti found the God she so deeply sang about and was restored to Him, then that says more than any of her own words can.
So why only four stars?
Well, while I do recommend this book to people, for example, who have endured or inflicted upon another an extramarital affair, it is not for the young hero worshipper (i.e. teenagers) or 'judgmental church person.' Many will never be satisfied with Sandi's confession no matter what she did.
And personally, I'm more than a little hesitant at confessional tell all books because what is the profit motive behind it? I can understand cynics who would say, "Her music career is on the skids so she wrote her life story for money."
While that may be true, let's not forget: she could have whitewashed everything if she wanted. And Sandi comes out looking pretty bad in this book.
Enjoy it.
SHE MARRIED THE MAN SHE HAD THE AFFAIR WITH!.......2006-03-25
I'm sorry, I don't mean to sound judgmental but Sandy Patty admits to making poor choices (very admirable)and after seeking restoration and finding peace from God, she married the man she had the affair with and lives happily ever after! Am I missing something here, because I just don't get it?? One thing I do get though, is that her career never recovered. But I do give her credit for one thing, though. She has never compromised in her music.
A real eye opener.......2006-02-01
This book brings you back to basics. The basics of life and a walk with God. Sandi is not only honest in this book, but she is humble as well. I recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with life and daily walk with Christ. Thanks Sandi for bringing me back to basics.
God's mercy IS new every morning!.......2005-12-23
Even before I bought and read this book, I couldn't believe some of the harsh, bitter, judgemental and un-forgiving reviews that are posted about it. I presume that these reviewers are Christians like myself, so that makes it even more appalling. This is the story of a beautiful and very talented singer( who happens to be a Christian) and the good, bad and ugly of her life. Sandi gives us enough info about her choices and mistakes but avoids being a "tell-all" book full of lurid details. She takes full responsibility for her actions as well as the consequences she and her family must now live with. It is clear that she has dealt with these issues in the proper Biblical way, but she has also moved on with her life. Through God's mercy and grace, she now has a blessed marriage, beautiful children, as successful a career as ever, and a wonderfully happy life! We should be rejoicing with her and praising God for His favor, not condemning her!! The Bible says that Jesus will leave the other sheep in the fold and go after the one that strayed away, and that's exactly what this whole book is about. It should give any Christian hope beyond description! If Jesus can see fit to forgive and restore us, who are we to not do the same with each other? I am so sorry to see the intolerance and criticism rampant in the Christian community. It's just not right. So praise God for His mercy and enjoy a good read!

Stunning pictures.......2006-02-26
What a beautiful book! This book has great illustrations to go along with the song "Morning has Broken" My little one likes to find the bird in every picture. Sometimes I'll just read the words and sometimes I'll sing the song. Either way, she enjoys hearing it and taking in the vivid pictures. I actually picked up this book before I had children because I fell in love with the pictures. While your child may not understand the depth of the words, the illustations will delight them.
Music to Live By.......1998-12-05
This book is an inspiration for children and adults alike. The deep Christian message of this beautifully illustrated book will stir the innermost spirit of those willing to consider it's message. My two year old daughter loves to sing along with the ancient yet familiar gaelic melody popularized by Cat Stevens in the 1970's. Revisit a familiar melody and reconsider the profound meaning of the text while you delight you children with this wonderful book. A real keepsake for those fortunate enough to have found it!

Heavier than Heaven: A Biography of Kurt Cobain
-
Nirvana - Live! Tonight! Sold Out!
ASIN: 0971920656 |
Book Description
One part memoir, one part political platform, the bass player of Nirvana-the most heralded and influential rock band of the past 20 years-tells the story of his own musical and political coming-of-age. From his relationship to Kurt Cobain to his evolution as a political activist, Novoselic's passion, intelligence and integrity come shining through in this moving and inspirational book.
Though Krist Novoselic will undoubtedly be forever best known as a member of Nirvana, his accomplishments go far beyond that remarkable achievement. Nirvana was a band with a conscience, and as a major label act they regularly played benefits-the first Rock For Choice show, a major concert in support of gay rights, and a legendary gig that raised money for the Balkan Women's Aid Fund.
In 1995, Novoselic founded JAMPAC (Joint Artists and Music Promotions Political Action Committee), a proactive organization that advocated on behalf of Washington state's music community. Novoselic's work with JAMPAC helped Seattle club owners find ways to host all-ages shows and was instrumental in helping to overturn the infamous Teen Dance Ordinance. And sometimes making music and making a statement go hand in hand, as when Novoselic, Soundgarden's Kim Thayil and drummer Gina Mainwal backed Jello Biafra as the "No W.T.O. Combo" at a show performed during the World Trade Organization conference held in Seattle in 1999.
There have been other musical endeavors since Nirvana, as well as new causes (Novoselic is a strong -supporter of electoral reform, an issue he writes about extensively on his website www.fixour.us). The one constant is Novoselic's desire to continue making progressive contributions to the community-and to keep on making good music.
Krist Novoselic currently lives in Seattle, Washington.
Customer Reviews:
Popular Music, Popular Government.......2006-12-18
Most of the world knows Novoselic as the bassist from the grunge band Nirvana. I know him as a neighbor and participant in local affairs. He is calm, well-spoken, careful with his words. And this is more than apparent in his book. There is no hysteria here; the book suffers from no hype. He merely -- and quite elegantly -- moves from the discussion of his participation in one of the great rock bands of all time to his participation in politics. And he offers a well thought-out discussion of the political reform he considers most important: Instant Runoff Voting.
We need, he argues, to make democracy relevant to more voters. And voters today realize quite well how rigged the current system is. It is rigged to
decrease the breadth of ideas, the breadth of interests represented.
He believes that allowing voters with alternative views -- views alternative to the straitjacket of Left and Right, Democratic and Republican -- to vote for their views and yet not be penalized by our first-past-the-post plurality vote electoral system.
It's an interesting case. I'm sympathetic, though I am more interested in Condorcet voting than IRV. Still, Novoselic makes a clear, even compelling case for his favored reform. He wishes to bring government under greater citizen control by giving citizens the tools actually to do this. Very good. The book is highly recommended, even to those who don't give a fig about grunge rock. The engineering of democracy should be of interest to everybody, no?
amazing , it kept me reading.......2006-02-18
i started reading this and i couldn't put it down. it was so interesting and it really opened up my eyes. krist is and amazing musician and this proves he is also an amazing writer. he deserves a lot of credit, for picking up the pieces after kurt died and for still succeeding in everything he does. you all should read this, its an awsome book.
A great gift for music fans and potential punk rock activists.......2005-11-18
I saw Krist read from this book at a music festival this summer. I was impressed by his passion and commitment but also by his detailed knowledge of the issues surrounding democratic reform. Perhaps he's not the most elegant writer, his prose is engaging and straightforward. It's a fun, quick, and inspiring read. I give copies out to teenage aspiring rockers who populate my town's all-ages shows as a way of teaching them about the history of underground music and also as a way of helping them figure out why it's important to be politically engaged.
Tellin' it like it is.........2005-09-14
I think Krist Novoselic is a) A very kind human being b) a very smart human being c)an excellent musician d) more knowledgable about politics and government thatn I could ever be. This book is a testement to Novoselic's lust to learn about his country and how it works, and coming from a rock and roll party guy to someone who realized there was more to life than that. This book, Of grunge and government, is not aimed at stuck up intellectual snobs, and is not fit for their tongue wagging. This book is aimed at regular people, like myself, who know little about government and politics (for plain ignorance or lack of interest) and make it understandable and interesting, all while giving some new ideas toward improving things. I bought this mainly cause of the grunge aspect, but I found it to be thought provoking and worthwhile. Conservative jerks might lambast it (as here in this review forum), but Novoselic is no simpleton, ranter, or idealogue. He is what Dr. Phil wishes he was but could never be: the real deal.
What a complete load of bullsh*t, mmkay!!!.......2005-06-20
I tried to read this book mmkay, but it had more contradictory statements in it than Cartman's paper about eating food and tryin' to be skinny, mmmkay? I think he writes like Cartman, mmkay, because he writes so crappy mmmkay.
Let's try to leave the Nirvana bullhonkey aside because it is so overrated and craptacular, mmkay?
