Book Description

Art therapy has grown so fast in the last few decades that it has barely been able to keep up with itself. Most books in the field have represented the author's interpretations of practicing art therapy. As art therapy continues to grow - not only in psychology but in other relevant fields - an overview of the field is needed. This introduction to art therapy. Art Therapy: An Introduction broadly outlines the history and current state of the field, the mechanics and techniques used and the ethics and responsibilities of this therapeutic strategy.

This survey of the field of art therapy is the first of its kind. Students, teachers, counselors, social workers, practitioners and others will benefit from the information presented in this book. In addition, the author provides pictures showing examples of artwork from children and adults as well as pictures of art therapists in action.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A very basic introduction to art therapy.......2007-06-14

I bought this book for a class on the history of art therapy. Although the book does provide some interesting insights, I found Rubin's writing style frustrating. Her approach is based on her perception of what is important, rather than presenting the information in a reader-friendly format. Additionally, she does not follow the APA style, which I also found frustrating. However, she did pull together some interesting facts about the field, as well as some illuminating historical references and case studies. Rubin does believe strongly in the power of this type of treatment, and her passion is evident in her writing. Although this book may not be the best to just pick up and read, it does provide a general overview of the field that some may find useful.

2 out of 5 stars too much history, not enough substance.......2004-01-02

I was misled by the title of this book. By some stretch of the word, it could be an introduction. But it is more like a rambling exploration of the history of the field of art therapy that jumps from person to person, often with only one sentence about each person. The chapters promise information on many ideas but none is covered in any meaningful way. And I certainly did not get a positive impression of art therapy from this book. In fact, it seems like a field that does not have a clear definition or the author could not come up with one. As a clinical social worker I was hoping for some more practical and less reference-oriented. This book reads like a dictionary, so if you are looking for something like that, it is the book you want.

2 out of 5 stars a lot of info but not well-organized.......2002-07-31

I guess I disagree with the previous reviewer on this book. I found it very confusing and disorganized in its content. It was not a very clear introduction to art therapy and the examples presented were not very helpful regarding what art therapists really do. The beginning is very historical and that was not really of interest to someone like me who wants to know what art therapy is. Maybe art therapy is a lot of history and it is hard to describe to others. I believe the author was sincere, but there is actually too much information presented in this book. If the author were a little more selective, the average reader might find this book more helpful.

I agree that this book is well-referenced, but for a lay reader it is over referenced. Almost every other sentence is a reference and many of the references are to material that is not published. I am wondering if art therapy is an unpublished field because the author uses a lot of these types of references. I found that very distracting and it did not help the clarity of this book.

This book would probably be best for art therapists who understand the various dimensions of their field. But for those who want to know in a readable manner what art therapy is and what art therapists do, this is not that book.

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY, THE BOOK WE NEED AND WANT.......2002-07-09

Being an old-timer in the field, I need no "introduction". But this book I find I both NEED and WANT.

I NEED it because it explains art therapy to the general public and students in the field better than any other book I know. I wish it had been around for the last 30 years when I was teaching graduate students in a dozen schools around the country. It brings the field to life!

I know of no other book that documents so much information about art therapy. Nobody I know has such a command of the source material in the field.

I WANT it for an assortment of reasons.

For one thing, it is never dry or ponderous - as its vast scholarship might suggest. She writes conversationally, making even the most complex ideas easily accessible to the lay person, the prospective or beginning student...charming and delighting old-timers like me.

Her format of small subject headings and bold type to emphasize essentials makes it easy to skim and shortcut. This beomes, then, a useful SOURCE BOOK for those trying to get a quick overview of the field.

She attributes ideas and writings widely, to everyone in the field who has made contributions. This is a GENEROUS book.

She is modest, witty and very proactical too. Fo those considering entering the field, here is an HONEST PICTURE of what problems as well as rewards are in store.

Who should read it? First off, people who want to know more about the field as well as students. And for people like me, or practitioners already working as art therapists, this is the book we need to have in our libraries.

Also I think it should be in counselors' offices in every art school, high school and especially college in the country. People don't know a great deal about this field, and school counselors will find no better SOURCE BOOK to help their students.

Interested practitioners in other fields will find useful chapters on Assessment, various Approaches, and the work going on with a variety of people in many different places: medical fields, crisis work, community institutions, and so on. It also discusses multimodality approaches (e.g. music, dance, drama & art).

Here are vivid stories and photos showing us how art therapy ACTUALLY WORKS.

2 out of 5 stars Book didn't sell me on art therapy.......2000-01-22

The author may be a good writer, but this book did not sell me on the idea of art therapy. I read it and still wondered, what is art therapy? I agree with the first reviewer who said it is a great reference listing. But I enjoyed The Art Therapy Sourcebook more and would recommend that book if you want to know more about art therapy. It gave me a better idea of what art therapy is and how it is done.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Must have Book as a Film Composer.......2007-08-23

If you're looking for great ideas in the Film & Music Industrie to start as a Film Composer this book will open your eyes.
You will definetly learn how to survive and exist as a Composer.
The most important is to put those ideas in the praxis!

5 out of 5 stars A very practical and helpful book.......2007-07-25

I was very fortunate to be able to study film scoring with Richard Bellis at USC back in the early 1990's, and he was a wonderful teacher. I learned a great deal from him in those classes. So I was thrilled to discover that he had taken his vast knowledge of the film scoring industry and had written a book about it.

I've just finished the book, and I have to say it's been one of the most practical and helpful books of its kind that I've ever read -- and I've read MANY such books over the years. I'm having a major recording session for a film score in just a month, and reading this book was enormously helpful to me in preparing for the session.

While most books on film music focus either on interviews with famous film composers, OR, focus on the very technical side of writing music for film, Richard's book is unique in that it gives you all the practical, nuts-and-bolts things you need to know about being a film composer -- something that all of the other film music books seem to lack. The information in this book is presented in an honest, practical, and well organized way, and every page of it is helpful in some way -- so be prepared to highlight a lot of the text! :)

I highly recommend this book to anyone involved in film scoring. No matter what level of experience you may already have in this field, I guarantee that you will gain a number of valuable insights by reading this book.

Thanks, Richard, for having written such a practical and helpful book!

5 out of 5 stars THANK YOU RICHARD BELLIS!.......2007-04-04

The music business is a tough one to break into, even for those that know what they are doing. Narrowing that down to film composition is even more difficult. I read this book cover to cover in one day because I found it absolutely fascinating. Anyone who is even thinking about a career in this industry should get a copy immediately.

Not only does Richard Bellis tell us the REAL DEAL of what goes on in the industry but even helps with time management, contracts and what is REALLY expected by the pros and does so in a light-hearted and enjoyable way. There is nothing left uncovered on the business side of the business.

By all means, learn all you can about composition, creativity, sound and recording. It is essential. But without this knowledge and insight, you'll have a tough time getting in the door!

5 out of 5 stars A must have resource for aspiring film composers........2007-03-25

Excellent book for the composer trying to break into the industry. Richard Bellis tells it like it is, and his advice is applicable today, in 2007. A must read for any film music composer, or anyone curious about the business.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Informative....in that order.......2007-02-27

I was laughing loudly at times. Raising my eyebrow and making a mental note at times. I was familiar with most of this information already, but a fresh view and voice was fantastic. I would recommend this book to anyone who is gaining confidence that they have the chops to write good music and want a great cross-section view of what the film scoring industry is like.

      Book Description

This far-ranging book shows how human memory influences the organization of music. The book is divided into two parts. The first part presents basic ideas about memory and perception from cognitive psychology and, to some extent, cognitive linguistics. Topics include auditory processing, perception, and recognition. The second part describes in detail how the concepts from the first part are exemplified in music. The presentation is based on three levels of musical experience: event fusion (the formation of single musical events from acoustical vibrations in the air, on a time scale too small to exhibit rhythm), melody and rhythm, and form. The focus in the latter is on the psychological conditions necessary for making large-scale--that is, formal--boundaries clear in music rather than on traditional musical forms. The book also discusses the idea that much of the language used to describe musical structures and processes is metaphorical. It encourages readers to consider the possibility that the process of musical composition can be "a metaphorical transformation of their own experience into sound."

The book also touches on unresolved debates about psychological musical universals, information theory, and the operation of neurons. It requires no formal musical training and contains a glossary and an appendix of listening examples.

1 out of 5 stars Too much scientific jargon for the average person.......2007-04-02

This book explores hearing and memory from a highly technological view point. It is difficult for the average person even with a college degree to follow and renders one bored after only a few pages of trying to follow the tiny details in the book.

      5 out of 5 stars impressive.......2006-11-16

not much to add to Sean Bennett's review, which is very cogent, but just wanted to second the high ranking--this is a book that deserves to be acknowledged and read.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding introduction to issues in music and memory........2001-06-28

Written textbook style, Snyder's Music and Memory surveys what was previously the largely disparate literature linking cognitive psychology, linguistics, music, neuroscience, and memory. Accessible to the beginner in this interdisciplinary field, Snyder takes effort to introduce musical concepts and terminology before moving to higher level analyses. However, the expert in this field will still find many interesting bits of information regarding current papers on music and memory in these introductory chapters. As the book progresses, the scale of the ideas becomes more grandiose, but Snyder manages to support his tenets about the brain and music well. The chapters are sometimes divided by topic (like rhythm, or syntactic hierarchy in music). This enormous undertaking succeeds admirably -- and even if you are not a cognitive musicologist, you will find many interesting bits of information about this book about why you remember that certain song you've heard on the radio or TV. A+++.

I found this book gives great insight to the way children think and react. So many books leave the reader wondering what was really meant at the end of the book, but this book gives great ideas into what children percieve about their famalies, etc. and how this relates into what they draw. I found this book very readable and informative. I really loved this book!!!

      Book Description

How hearing works and how the brain processes sounds entering the ear to provide the listener with useful information are of great interest to psychologists, cognitive scientists, and musicians. However, while a number of books have concentrated on individual aspects of this field, known as psychoacoustics, there has been no comprehensive introductory coverage of the multiple topics encompassed under the term. Music, Cognition, and Computerized Sound is the first book to provide that coverage.

The book begins with introductory chapters on the basic physiology and functions of the ear and auditory sections of the brain, then proceeds to discuss numerous topics associated with the study of psychoacoustics, including cognitive psychology and the physics of sound. The book has a particular emphasis on music and computerized sound. An accompanying CD-ROM includes many sound examples to help explicate the text.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great intro to the subjective human perception of sound.......2006-12-09

Developed from a series of lectures at the Stanford Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA), this book offers a coherent panorama of the field of psychoacoustics as it pertains to music and computerized sound. The authors-among them Max Mathews, Roger Shepard, John Chowning, and John Pierce-are recognized authorities in the field of computer synthesized sound and the nature of acoustical and musical perception. The CD-ROM contains audio samples for each chapter, plus source code for all the samples.

Although it is specifically intended as a course book for psychoacoustics, with a closing chapter on the effective design of experiments and an appendix of exercises, this book should prove valuable to a wide audience. Computers provide what seems the ultimate level of control over sound synthesis, but it is often hard to know where to begin. Anyone who has ever confronted the problem of determining which parameters of a synthesized sound are acoustically perceptible or meaningful will appreciate the clarity with which the introductory chapters distinguish the physical parameters of sound from the perception of sound. Building on established research into the fundamentals of acoustic perception, the book proceeds to more complex issues of voice articulation and synthesis, perceptual streaming, musical memory, and the haptics of sound production. Computer musicians will find material to suggest diverse directions for experimentation. Multimedia artists working with sound will discover new methods for generating sounds, with the potential for weaning themselves from straight playback of sampled sound and working with real time synthesis. Some of the perceptual effects documented in the text and audible on the CD are remarkable in themselves, such as Shepard and Risset tones, or the complex effects of perceptual streaming. The level of detail of many of the chapters is sufficient, particularly when supplemented by the source code, to get you started in a variety of sound synthesis techniques. The brief list of bibliographic references at the end of each chapter will lead you onwards.

While this book is most valuable as a guide to the uses of state-of-the-art technology for acoustic research, it also sheds light on how human cognitive abilities shape musical structures. Choices of rhythm, melodic variation, chord structure, timbre, orchestration, and even the evolution of musical styles over time have some of their reasons in the nature of the human auditory system. A welcome result of reading this book may be that the reader learns to hear natural and musical sounds with a new appreciation of the complex dynamics of sound production, sound perception, and the inner logic of music.

If you are interested in the signal processing end of psychoacoustics, I recommend you read "Signals, Sound, and Sensation" by Hartmann after you finish this book.

5 out of 5 stars keep it clear, simple and efficient!.......2006-03-16

If you are interested in the filed of psychoacoustic, this book provides great informations and is written in a easy comprehensible manner. We used that book in my psychoacoustic class at university and even if I was not familiar with this subject, I learned a lot and enjoyed reading it. The book comes with a cd of audio exemples that follows the book.

      5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2005-02-25

Very enjoyable, very entertaining and an interesting reading. The opening chapter by Max Mathews is a lovely opener puts he reader at ease immeadiately. My first book on physco-acoustics and to be honest I am glad. I have read other books on the subject since then but this is still my favourite. Well worth the money.

      5 out of 5 stars Self-Study in Psychoacoustics.......2004-10-11

This book is great for self-study in psychoacoustics or for reviewing the basics of related fields. One of the best parts is the list of recommended experiments in the back of the book. These really help to keep the information in the respective sections from the realm of abstract pendanticism. This is the book that is assigned to the Psychoacoustics course at CCRMA (Stanford) and is laid out in an easy-to-follow, instructive way. One of the best entry-level texts on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars A great place to start........2000-03-14

Simply a great book to "start" your research. Excellent bibliography, and very very important contributors (those who have made the history of CM). I have bought another couple of books on this subject, however this is the most balanced one. Make sure you read the book by Bregman and Fastl & Zwicker (if your a tech head) once you're finished with this one.
