5 out of 5 stars Excellent Background to Understanding Haiti.......2007-09-15

"Written in Blood" by Col & Mrs Heinl is a "must have" for anyone interested in Haiti. The Heinl's trace the long and bloody history of the island and it's peoples and link these events together with their clear writing style. In this updated version, their son seamlessly carries on with the tale.
When Haiti once again "resurfaces" as the crisis of the day (as it will), leaders and policy makers would do well to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Written in the West by Wim Wenders.......2007-01-11

As soon as my photography professor shared with me his copy of this book I knew I had to have it.

4 out of 5 stars Great book - a must have companion to "Once".......2003-07-10

If I had to choose only one Wim Wenders photography book, it would be "Once". That said, "Written in the West" is an awesome companion to "Once". It has a great interview in the front of the book but the 60+ photos are featured without further commentary other than titles and locations.

"Once" has more commentary on each photo or series of photos and has more photos altogether. This is why I prefer that book. However "Once" is a smaller book whereas "Written in the West" is more of a coffe table sized book.

The presentation is great and the color photos offer a unique perspective on the American west. Wenders even tells us what camera and lens he used and why.

5 out of 5 stars Up front America.......2003-03-12

I suppose it was only to be expected that filmmaker Wim Wenders would have an eye for composing a good photo. This book of sixty-two, originally published in 1987, is thankfully still in print. They were taken in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas while Wenders was looking for locations for his movie 'Paris, Texas'. Predictably they show a European notion of America so most of them capture what could be considered a rather negative image, abandoned gas stations in the desert, deserted movie theatres and shops, neon signs, everyday commercial activity and more. But they are taken with a sympathetic eye and great feeling.

There are six really great images of street corners, this kind of shot always works, shop-fronts and parked cars stretch into the distance while the immediate foreground provides close-up detail. As with all Wenders photos the color is very controlled and he takes advantage of the very strong dark shadows created by the sunlight in this part of the country. There are four interior photos which I don't think are too successful, very dark and rather lacking in composition.

I don't think this will be a photo book to everybody's taste, because of the subject matter but if you like the grittiness of the American street scene it is well worth owning. A book that captures the same area in great color photos is 'Southwest USA' (ISBN 0500541213) by another German, Gerd Kittel. More broader in scope than 'Written in the West', it includes many interior and landscape photos as well as the small town street scenes.

5 out of 5 stars Ajax1158.......2004-10-03

I first read this book over 20 years ago when I was a student at the University of Wisconsin. I found it excellently written and full of details and intersting facts concerning the Hatian people. Thinking back, a lot of the material is now dated[until'71] obviously a lot has happened since the books pubblication [i.e Baby Doc's and General Cedris's departure and the US Invasion and Aristede's return to and fall from power, for example] I really enjoyed reading this engrossing and tragic history of Haiti. I would recommend this work to anyone looking for a good abiet outdated chronology of this destitute but proud country. All in all a good read.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome book of tragic Haitian history.......2002-08-24

This book is awesome. It is a wonderful piece of work. My perspective is as someone who spent 9 months working in Haiti, however, I am not sure how appreciated it would be by someone who is less familiar with the country. It terrificly explains the tragic history of Haiti and ties in somewhat current events. I enjoyed reading it with the familiarity of knowing the places the author descibes. The only negative to this book may be that recent history isn't included due to it's publication date. As those familiar with Haiti well know, the political situation can quickly change in such a fragile country.

5 out of 5 stars Written In Blood.......2002-04-26

This is an excellent book. I have yet to read a more unbiassed detailed book on the history of Haiti, wheter in the French or English language.

The book details with precision the lives of the many players that have affected Haiti's political landscape in one way or another.

I recommend this book to all Haitians, or to anyone who's interested in knowing the reasons behind the current horrific political and social situation of Haiti.

You'll be suprised to learn who the true heroes of Haiti are.

5 out of 5 stars Ranks with Churchill, Gibbon and Maculay as Timeless Classic.......2001-02-28

Very fair, with great detailed understanding of the convolutions of Haiti's tragic history. Glossary provides definitions of French and Creole terms. Photos and maps, along with a very helpful chronology .

I've read Churchill, Gibbon and Maculay's histories and say this book belongs in their company. The compassion for the suffering peoples and the trenchant and bitting comments about the selfish and deluded men and women who usually gain power, is very easy to read and hard to put down.

Living in Miami, having Haitian friends, I now understand why thse people are immagrants, and most of the Cubans who live here are "exiles"; eternal foreigners dreaming about a land with no Fidel. I also reccommend "Continental Drift", a novel about Haiti and the US, as well. Also a very good read. "Written In Blood" is a giant and great book that will leave you with one sure thing: congratulating yourself for reading it and your feeling anger at the poor leaders of Haiti, and compassion for the ordinary people who flee and those who remain.

3 out of 5 stars Shoddy editing and production........2000-08-02

This updated edition of Written in Blood is a thorough treatment of Haitian history. The topic is exhaustively and one hopes accurately covered. I hope that it is accurately covered because the editing and production process evident in the copy that I bought is abominable. The book is rife with every conceivable editorial and production error known to Man. And the index is an abomination! If the quality of the research and writing that went into it is equivalent to the quality of its editing and production, this book is problematic. Because of my experience on Hispaniola, however, I suspect that such is not the case. I would recommend Written in Blood to anyone (particularly those limited to English) interested in Haiti. But I would admonish prospective readers to bear this caveat in mind,

Product Description

A chapter in the chronicle of the Cuban Revolution, as told by those on the front lines of that ongoing epic. Armando Choy, Gustavo Chui, and Moisés Sío Wongthree young rebels of Chinese-Cuban ancestrythrew themselves into the great proletarian battle that defined their generation. They became combatants in the clandestine struggle and 195658 revolutionary war that brought down a U.S.-backed dictatorship and opened the door to the socialist revolution in the Americas. Each became a general in Cubas Revolutionary Armed Forces. Here they talk about the historic place of Chinese immigration to Cuba, as well as more than five decades of revolutionary action and internationalism, from Cuba to Angola, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. Through their stories the social and political forces that gave birth to the Cuban nation and still shape our epoch unfold. We see how millions of ordinary men and women like them changed the course of history, becoming different human beings in the process.

5 out of 5 stars an important book.......2006-11-14

This is a great book for university students in the field of history or Latin American politics. Usually we are accustomed to reading only the interviews of Dr. Fidel Castro but rarely do we get a glimpse of others who did battle as well during the Cuban Revolution--1956-58--and these are the three Cuban-Chinese generals. This is a great oral history book on Cuban history as well as Cuban-Chinese relations. It is fascinating to read what these--highly intelligent--generals have to say about their Cuban Government and its role on international relations. A must have for any University student studying Latin American history and/or politics.

5 out of 5 stars A highly personalized yet nonetheless valuable look at the evolution of modern Cuban history and politics.......2006-03-06

The collaborative work of Armando Choy, Gustavo Chui and Moises Sio Wong, Our History Is Still Being Written: The Story Of Three Chinese-Cuban Generals In The Cuban Revolution is the personal testimony of three individuals of Chinese-Cuban ancestry who became involved in the 1956-58 revolutionary war that ended the America-backed dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista, with lasting repercussions for socialist revolution in Latin America. Their stories cover not only the excitement of fifty years ago, but also the years since up to the modern day from problems with food shortages to postmodern wars of ideas. An appendix includes two essays by Fidel Castro and one by Nelson Mandela. Most Of Our History Is Still Being Written is told in interview/narrative format, directly from the mouths of the authors; black-and-white photographs offer glimpses of key turning points in Cuban history. A highly personalized yet nonetheless valuable look at the evolution of modern Cuban history and politics.

5 out of 5 stars If you are at all curious about Cuba, START WITH THIS BOOK.......2006-03-03

If you are at all serious about fundamental social change in this century, READ THIS BOOK:

Although this book takes the form of interviews with three Cuban generals of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Chinese origins-- yes there are Chinese in Cuba, propotionately the immigration there was many times greater than to the U.S.; three are yes, generals in the armed forces and leaders of the revolution;no, not everyone of Chinese origins fled the Revolution-- the best part is that you get a wide ranging, broad-scope picture of the Cuban Revolution from the war against the Batista dictatorship through the "Bay of Pigs"/Playa Giron imperial invasion ( attempted, anyway) ; the October 1962 "missile" crisis; Cuba's role in defending Angola fron then-racist-apartheid South Africa, speeding the democratic revolution throughout southern Africa; the economic crisis of the early to mid 1990s; all the way to Cuba's solidarity aid to Venezuela in the teeth of the Empire's threats to both countries, and the current revolution-within-the-revolution known in Cuba as the Battle of Ideas. All this recounted by fighters who PARTICIPATED in these events ! The Cuban Revolution is not "holding out" or merely "surviving"; it is marching foward even if the future is one of struggle amid difficulties...the Cuban people, governemt and Revolution are WINNING. They are beating The Empire every day. Find out why-- read this book !

5 out of 5 stars Inside view of Cuba's mission in the world.......2006-02-23

The three Cuban generals interviewed for this book are all of Chinese descent and shed interesting light on the Chinese-Cuban community (proportionately the largest in the Americas). But the heart of this book is the tremendous opportunity the Cuban Revolution has given these men to advance the cause of human solidarity. They have a down-to-earth approach and their reflections include striking examples as well as razor-sharp observations. Although all three are past retirement age, they all play leading roles in the revolution today, which they discuss in these interviews. This is ongoing history, which they are still living. In this book you get an inside look at the tremendous role Cuba played in Angola as well as a picture of the type of critical humanitarian solidarity Cuba is able to extend to Venezuela today. They show why a society based on international solidarity can successfully challenge the fangs-bared, dog-eat-dog example of the U.S. These interviews cover a variety of topics, such as racism, underdevelopment, the environment, agriculture, military strategy, and the role of youth. The photographs in this beautiful book are an education in themselves. While amazon may list this book as not available from time to time, it is always available from the Pathfinder z store listed under "new and used" at the top of this page.

5 out of 5 stars A smorgasbord of insights on Cuba today.......2006-02-19

Full of unexpected and detailed stories about Cuba in the world today...Yugoslavia could have withstood NATO bombings in the 1990s if army officers had used underground tunnels and the system of reserves put in place during World War II to allow the population to sustain itself, one of the Chinese-Cuban generals interviewed in this book says. He explains that Cuba's defense relies on such a system of reserves (not only food but also pencils and paper to keep schools open!): to give the rest of the world time to come to Cuba's aid and organize solidarity in the event of a military attack. So he spearheaded a wildly successful program in Cuba to develop urban agriculture and increase domestic food production. A part of this effort: convincing Cubans to eat veggies...the generals went to Angola to help fight the South African invasion in the 80s, one lost a leg there; one went to Venezuela on the recommendation of the UN to help them develop a food production program like the Cubans'...they all talk about what it was like growing up Chinese under the Batista dictatorship...Who would have guessed that the number of Chinese who moved to Cuba in the mid1800s was roughly the same as the number who moved to the US? An easy read, and you just never know what the next chapter will talk about.

    Book Description

Popular media depict miners as a rough-and-tumble lot who diligently worked the placers along scenic rushing rivers while living in roaring mining camps in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Trafzer and Hyer destroy this mythic image by offering a collection of original newspaper articles that describe in detail the murder, rape, and enslavement perpetrated by those who participated in the infamous gold rush. "It is a mercy to the Red Devils," wrote an editor of the Chico Courier, "to exterminate them." Newspaper accounts of the era depict both the barbarity and the nobility in human nature, but while some protested the inhumane treatment of Native Americans, they were not able to end the violence. Native Americans fought back, resisting the invasion, but they could not stop the tide of white miners and settlers. They became "strangers in a stolen land."

My sister and I used Keener's "Written in Stone: Tombstone Readings of Preston County, West Virginia" and Sisler's "In Remembrance, Tombstone Readings of Preston County, West Virginia" as Cemetery Guide Books on a recent trip to Preston County. I recommend the books of both Keener and Sisler for folks who are researching their Preston County ancestors.

    Book Description

These two slave narratives expand our knowledge of the differing ways males and females coped with enslavement and later ordeals in flight. This popularly-priced anthology contains the often taught Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs and the recently discovered A True Tale of Slavery by John S. Jacobs, her younger brother, now reprinted for the first time. After Harriet 's owner, a physician, repeatedly abused her, she escaped his sexual advances for a time by entering into a relationship with a local attorney. Her owner continued to harass her, and she sought refuge in a crawlspace where she lived in hiding. After her escape to the North, she published her narrative.John S. Jacobs "walked away " as he put it, from his owner, a congressman. He sailed on a whaling ship and educated himself. He then became a paid agent of the Anti-Slavery Society, made a lecturing trip with Frederick Douglass, and finally settled in London, where he remained until it was safe for a fugitive to return to the North. He wrote his story for a London Sunday school journal where it was published in 1861.

2 out of 5 stars fact or fiction.......2007-07-05

Some say this isnt true, after reading it seems that some is fiction. Especially extensive quotes years after the events from someone who coulnt read or write at the time the events occured and would have no way of recording them for future use. Somewhat drawn out. Keep looking there may be something better out there on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, and very moving........2007-04-01

This book is one of those books that have quite an affect on you. By the time I was done I had a bit more of knowledege of how slavery really was. Clearly I had no idea until I read it. I really wanted to cry so many times during the book.

    Everyone should read this book.

    5 out of 5 stars Awe-Inspiring!.......2007-02-25

Once I completed reading this book from front-back cover, I wanted to re-read it. I was incredibly inspired and humbled by Ms. Jacob. Her hardships, and brutal struggles were unthinkable, let alone, unspeakable. How she gathered the mental strength to put her story to paper is yet another testament of her tenacity and raw power of strength, love, belief, and courage against her most ungodly circumstances. She helped me to confirm my vow to strengthen myself in the name of all my powerful brothers and sisters....past and present. I will never complain about my life. But I will vehemently complain about the continued injustice placed on Blacks, both young and old. We, as a people, are moving forward, full-trottle. We can not and will not be stopped, ever. Let no man put us asunder! History has showed us most horribly what can happen. My life is a gift and a testament of the struggles of my ancestors. Harriet Jacob's story has given me newfound strength to persevere in my career and to live life fully. My ancestors's angst, fears, physical and mental tortures will not go unnoticed, forgotten, nor minimized. I owe my ancestors a good, if not great life! African-Americans are strong, proud and resilient.
"Say It Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud"! Rise Up My People!
Everyone should read books of slavery. Learn not only the torture of Blacks, but the warped psyche of American slaveholders and the mental legacy they have passed on that is prevalent today.

5 out of 5 stars "Reader, be assured this narrative is no fiction.".......2007-01-25

And with that sentence begins perhaps the most powerful personal account on the brutality of slavery. Written under the name of Linda Brent, the reader is led on a journey into this world of hate by a white power structure in the south & north through the experiences of Harriet Jacobs.

"I have not exaggerated the wrongs inflicted by slavery...." Jacobs writes. "Only by experience can anyone realize how deep, and dark, and foul is that pit of abominations."

And as I read this outstanding book, I reflected on how this country has never truly confronted the sordid past of slavery, the failure of Reconstruction and essentially a victory through defeat on the battlefield for those who were advocates of, shills for or operated businesses with slave labor.

This nation was built on the tears, blood, sweat and toil of millions, and Jacobs is one voice of truth, imploring those with open minds & hearts to hear the reality of human bondage.

The book should be required reading in every high-school American History class. The ramifications of rewriting history by running from the past must stop if this country wishes to step onto the path of true equal rights and justice for all.

Jacobs presents the facts. It is sad that it continually gets pushed aside for the fiction that is U.S. history.

5 out of 5 stars Harriet Jacobs, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl.......2007-01-05

This book was excellent, and I couldn't put it down. It was an easy read and would be appropriate for anyone over age 12.

Absent Voices: The Story Of Writing Systems In The West by writing systems historian, script designer Rochelle Altman (who also holds a doctorate in Medieval English Literature), is a scholarly survey of the history of the art of writing. Inspecting writing systems in the context of the dictionarny meaning of the "word" - a set or assemblage of things connected or associated so as to form a complex unity - Absent Voices traces the evolution of writing customs, from ancient times to the modern day. Extensively researched, with some black-and-white photographs of ancient script and a wealth of archaelogical research supporting its narrative and suppositions, Absent Voices is a fascinating tour through the ages and human perception.

      Book Description

A fascinating, factoid-full, annotated guide to the first-ever Writers Guild's list of best-written screenplays, from Oscar® winners to Hollywood classics to influential indies, from the 1930s through the present—a must for all who are interested in film and writing.

The results are in. In a joint venture between the WGA, West, and WGA, East, ballots were sent, for the first time ever, to their professional membership in order to compile the finest accomplishments in screenwriting. Up to ten screenplays could be cited. Any produced film, past or present, English-language or otherwise, was eligible. The final list was announced in April 2006 and is like a travelogue of the greatest films of all time, with all decades represented from the 1930s onward.

The Writers Guild's list features playwrights, novelists, film critics, writer-directors, writer-actors, three blacklisted writers, and four sets of brothers. Among those named are Woody Allen, William Goldman, Billy Wilder, Nora Ephron, Mel Brooks, Charlie Kaufman, Ernest Lehman, Steve Zaillian, Budd Schulberg, and Frances Goodrich.

With features about the writing of the films, bios, review extracts, and stills, 101 Greatest Screenplays not only celebrates the greatest achievements in screenwriting, but brings well-deserved recognition to the men and women who wrote the greatest films of all time. 50 b/w photos.

Some "factoids" about the 101 greatest screenplays featured in the book:
      • Woody Allen, Francis Ford Coppola, and Billy Wilder tie for most films on the list—4 each; William Goldman, John Huston, and Charlie Kaufman have 3 each
      • 29 writers directed their own scripts
      • 34 of the screenplays are based on novels
      • 5 writers are well-known novelists: Peter Benchley, James M. Cain, Raymond Chandler, Graham Greene, and Mario Puzo
      • 6 are foreign films; 6 are westerns; 14 are showbiz-related; 17 deal with political/social issues of the time; 18 are about crime
      • 6 films are notable for their unusual story structure (Citizen Kane, Annie Hall, Groundhog Day, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Being John Malkovich, Memento)
